These aren't in any particular order tbh

Dragon Age: Origins

Genuinely this game has some of the best writing in the series and really wants players invested in their characters as character origins intersect with the main plot. Inquisition was my first DA game but Origins rewired my brain chemistry.

2. Pokemon Soul Silver

Not my first Pokemon game nor my most recent but it was the one that came at a pivotal moment in my life. Many weeks of coming home from middle school and ignoring my homework to run around in the game.

3. Stardew Valley

Absolute classic and one I consistently go back to. Sometimes I need to turn off my brain and yearn for the mines.

4. Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

I was never a Zelda person growing up, but I picked up BotW this year in time to play TotK. Oh my god, this game made me cry multiple times with it's lovingly-crafted story. I love the act of exploration in this game and it's encouragement to find multiple solutions to the same problem. Truly one of the best games of the last decade.

5. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

This game is such a mess and I love her dearly for it. It's character creation and leveling system is one of my favorite in any game and I'm very glad traces of it exist in Starfield (I'm not playing but my brother is and there's a lot of Oblivion love in it).

6. Cult of the Lamb

A very fun gameplay loop and roguelike combat make this super fun to replay. I don't come here for in-depth story (I've compared it to Happy Tree Friends in that regard), but I love the cult creation and maintenance.

7. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

Underrated game of all time. It shows it age and there's elements of the story that don't work great but dear god I love it and I'm forever sad no one plays it. Lots of Irish folk inspiration, which I think would draw more people if they knew that was there.

8. Baldur's Gate 3

For context, I haven't actually been able to play but I've been consuming a lot of content for it so I know its up my alley. (My PC would explode bc I don't have the specs and it's not coming to Xbox for a bit 😭) But I love the characters and the DnD aspect so much.

9. Mass Effect

I'm not huge on shooters but the first Mass Effect really drew me in with its story. Not a perfect game by any stretch. However, it still feels fresh and new even now.

10. Tetris

Finally, original Tetris. Love me some shapes. First game I ever played because my mom had an old school Gameboy from before I was born that she handed down to me as a kid. Sadly can't play it on the original hardware (I still have it and it still runs!) because the screen is dogshit and I can't see, but luckily there's more places to play it now.

favorite episode: i’m gonna just go with favorite scene, and mine is link and zelda’s last stand against the guardians 100 years ago........ gorgeous cinema

favorite cast member: elizabeth maxwell!!!!!!! i adore her so much in every role she plays

favorite ship: zelink...... i know i’m basic but i simp for soulmates and the knight/charge dynamic

character i’d die defending: idk if this means defending from accusations or defending from like. physical harm?? for the first, yunobo is a sweetheart who has done nothing wrong ever. for the second, everyone. i shield every character in botw from harm. nothing bad happens in this game. everyone from 100 years ago is alive. everything is fine-

ive made a few of these bingo sheets and theyre fun so i decided to make one not just for e3 but also JUST for splatoon 3 (not just for e3 but for like the whole lifetime of the game). also heres my updated list of characters id like to see in smash, ordered generally by which id like more and/or think are the most realistic

since min min got in i took out helix, and since i couldnt decide whether to add in waluigi or madeline i added another row (realistically i dont think any indies are getting in but i threw some in anyway). also i was like “oh yeah maybe theyd put in a gen viii pokemon” so i threw in hatterene since thats one of my favorites.

also as for waluigi (and shovel knight for that matter) i think it would be nice to see an assist trophy get in just to break that rule. also i remember being super surprised he wasnt in brawl (back then i thought he and wario were equally important) and even though that was based on a wrong impression ive still felt like he should be in there ever since

really is about time for those n64 games, especially now that mario is dead so theyre free to release sm64 on it. game boy games would be nice sometime too

would also make sense to include banjo-kazooie in that, nintendos had a good relationship with microsoft lately and the total absence of anything banjo-kazooie on the switch is odd since it’s a dlc character (every other one has a game on switch they can use for cross-marketing, even if joker’s took a while) and i think the best explanation for that would be that theyre holding off for the nso n64 app (this is easiest from a technical standpoint because all they have to do is make a deal to use the roms)

when are they putting octolings in mk8d

xenoblade chronicles x is one of the only wii u games left that they could port (aside from ones that wouldnt make much sense like splatoon and ssb4) so i guess that might as well happen sometime. also monolith soft might be doing something else besides helping with splatoon 3

im not ready for metroid prime 4 (im over halfway through mp2 and therefore the trilogy as a whole) but it’s been a while, they might show it and it could even come out this year

hal apparently recently hinted at a new kirby game or something

the upgraded switch is obviously going to be called the Nintendo Switch ͥ since they already did the ds lite so theyre clearly naming everything in the family after the ds family, theres absolutely no flaw in this logic. idk if theyre showing it, but unlike 2019 they didnt say they werent showing new hardware (just that they were showing software, which could be taken as denying rumors, but they sometimes specify when certain things arent being shown)

metroid prime trilogy also might come this year. would make sense to release it before mp4 since not everyone is going to buy a wii u to get it (and at this point that doesnt get nintendo any money since they stopped making them)

where is detective pikachu 2. i hope it has the blue pikachu from that first tease they gave us in like 2014 (2013? that was a loooong time ago idk)

i held off on watching a playthrough for ndrv3 on the off chance it came to switch and i could play a dangan ronpa game for real for once but it’s now been 4 years and we just passed the 10th anniversary of the series (albeit during a pandemic when i wouldnt expect them to have done anything) so it would be cool to see the series come to switch. i think if it still doesnt after this though i’ll just watch the playthrough, 4 years is long enough. amazed ive avoided spoilers this long, i still know next to nothing about the game

remove splatfest tee annoyances: you should have a prompt at the end of a splatfest to pay to scrub your tee (to make sure you get the chunks) also it should be on a neutral brand so you dont end up with an overabundance of ink resistance up (or whatever else)

better online and cloud saves would certainly justify having a second splatoon game on the same console, as much as im loving that it exists

Hello, can you explain your Calamity AU and Decoy AU? I recently started following so I'm not too familiar with them, esp the Decoy AU.

Ps love your ancient era trio!

*cracks knuckles* glad u asked! I’m going to be very concise and brief but if u would like for me to give longer and more detailed summaries, please ask!

Decoy au is the first (garbage and self indulgent) au that i came up with. It started with a scribble post where I made botw link and zelda swap their ‘royal’ outfits cuz i find it funny how similar they can look to someone who is unfamiliar with them. So i thought to myself would it not be great if link sort of acted as a decoy for zelda to avoid kidnappings and assassinations. I recently remade that very first post and u can find it here (i rec looking thru the decoy au tag if u wanna go back to the very beginning). And that developed into the hideously self indulgent botw ganlink fic (canon divergence where the calamity never happened) where i just wanted to play out the scenario of oh no the princess has been kidnapped by the villain! But oh wait, its actually her knight! And then the villain and the knight proceed to make out and go at it like maniacs! U can find that first fic here. This fic was meant to be nothing more than me writing vague plot for a pwp but then i accidentally wrote plot into it in part 2 which I’m currently writing. Ive kind of ended up exploring why the calamity never happened in the botw era and trying to resolve some... maybe romantic feelings between link and ganon? Yeah its a pwp that grew legs

Now... the calamity au is a bit weirder and more difficult to explain cuz there is much much more plot. I highly recommend going onto the calamity au tag and going to the very first text post. The focus of this au is actually ganon from my version of the ancient era who was used as a vessel by the calamity (which is a completely separate entity to him). The actual story begins when he finally manages to separate myself from the calamity 10,000 years later with the help of zelda (so this is right at the end of the botw events) and the plot follows him about 5 years later as he tries to find the weakened spirit of the calamity and finally seal it for good. Who ends up bumping into ganon and helping him is link from the canon botw era who is trying to also find out what happened to the calamity cuz he never ended up having that final battle cuz when the calamity separated from ganon it seemed to just vanish. Why this au is called the calamity au is cuz down the line of events the calamity tries to find a new vessel to re-emerge in hyrule and it ends up latching onto link turning him into the dark beast/calamity and he is the Big Bad which needs to be confronted by zelda and this time ganon

I need to clarify that ancient link and zelda wont actually make an appearance in the fic besides very short recollections that are mostly told thru ganon. They accidentally appeared and I’m bumping designs and ideas from y’all. They weren’t even meant to have solid backgrounds, they just appeared

And Sea of Thieves is like SUPER fun if you know what to expect, it's basically pirate and you do everything on the ship from moving the sails, raising them lowering them, turning them, steering the ship/shooting the cannons and stuff as well as gathering materials in case other players try to mess with you but you essentially just pirate for the aesthetic since that's all there really is in the game lol there's no like upgrades or anything just different cosmetics and titles 😅 I recently hit pirate legend on SoT so I've been playing nonstop cause I gotta flex on the other pirates lmao

story time bc i got a little emotional getting to this point

ive loved zelda for as long as i can remember, from watching my brother play OoT when i was just 2yo. breath of the wild (then known as zelda u) was first showcased in the e3 of 2014 aka a couple of weeks after i graduated high school, and even with prom turning out so much better than i thought, it was the highlight of my summer. this short 2 minutes of link galloping a non-epona horse through a gorgeous field while fleeing a guardian became my lifeforce. back then the game was planned for 2015 and i was hyped beyond imagining for it.

i digress. the point is, i was looking forward to it. then it was delayed two years. when it came out, i couldnt buy it.

i’ll spare the details of my situation back then; long story short, the previous january, i spent hundreds i didnt have to fly out and visit someone very important to me, who then broke my heart a few days after i got back home and had to face reality. basically, it was Bad, financially but also mentally and emotionally. not getting to play this game when it finally came out because i’d splurged on visiting someone who betrayed my trust as soon as i was gone was a lot of salt in the wound.

i wasn’t completely unlucky, though. i had two incredible friends who cared a lot about me. a lot more than i deserved, admittedly, considering how i’d been treating them in recent months. though i tried my best not to burden them with my problems, they could tell i was not doing well, and in an attempt to cheer me up, and despite neither of them being very financially comfortable, they pitched in to buy me the game on wii u between the two of them. this gesture, along with the game itself, probably saved my life at the time.

i’ll always remember the first couple of days i had it in hand. my parents were gone on a vacation and my brother to his girlfriend’s for the weekend, so i got to shamelessly stay up playing it until 7am, only stopping to get a couple hours of sleep, get my short weekly shift over with and being back at it without restraint. i got to do so while chatting with our small discord friend group, two of us being in the midst of playing for the first time while three other had experienced it since launch.

i made a beeline for sidon, i wont lie. the zora have been my favorite since majoras mask and it was so rare that wed get a main zora character that wasnt a princess crushing on link. me and my friend group were already talking about botw rp/AUs, and i knew sidon would be my muse and i wanted to get to know him asap.

thet only thing that distracted me from that goal was this little guy. this pony i spotted all the way from the plateau, right outside the magnesis shrine. im an equestrian so the horses were obviously a part of the game i was also really looking forward to, but this pony really appealed to me in a way i never managed to explain to my friends. i didnt pay attention to anything the king said because i knew what i was gonna do the second i was gonna get off the plateau.

i spent all of the few stamina food i’d managed to cook with those measly plateau stamella shrooms getting this guy. i could tell he was upset with me trying to tame him so i’d keep trying to get off, grab apples and feed him, except he’d always start walking off immediately as i got off and i’d panic and get back on.

the sun set, the keese swarms spawned. i was completely lost as to where i should go, whether stables or story-wise. anxious beyond belief because not only did it feel like my pony was gonna buck me off any second but also because i confused the night riding music for guardian spots you music.

i begged my friends to give me directions as to where i could find a place to register this guy. just follow the road, they said, one will show up. the road seems to be leading to the castle, i said. follow the road the other way, they said. after a major heartrate spike from spotting a stalker over the hill near riverside stables, i managed to get him there. with not a rupee to my name. with my friend’s recommendation to look for beedle, i left him in one of the pens shoring the river, hoping i could sell some things before he made his grand escape.

finally i managed to register him. i called him trickster, for all the trouble he put me through. he’s the one i fought dark beast ganon with. he’s never stopped being my favorite horse i ever caught, and, in a way, the token of my finally embarking on the grand adventure that is this game once and for all.

with me saving up to afford the switch a few months later, i hadn’t gotten to see trickster in a very long time until today. but after struggling with setting up all my new hardware, i was able to dump my wii u save file on an emulator, which means now i can see trickster right here on my computer whenever i want. and he looks great !

Hi Wendy! I recently picked up breath of the wild, partially bc you'd recommended it in the past and Ive been loving it!! Its so fantastic, thank you for being part of the reason i played it! I have 2 questions, do you have a favorite Champion? (I thought Urbosa had the same vibes as you!) and, do you have any recommendations for what part of the series i should look into next, botw was my first zelda game and i wanna know more but i dont know where to start!

i genuinely love all of them so much but Urbosa probably is my favourite x3 mostly because she takes good care of Zelda and I love anyone who loves Zelda.

the one thing you do need to know if you don’t already is that most other zelda games are not at all like BOTW, gameplay wise! the closest zelda to BOTW in terms of gameplay is zelda one, wherein you are a small green square. but a small green square who can go ANYWHERE.

other zeldas are very linear, with a clear set path for you to follow the story and a minimal overworld. BOTW was a HUGE departure with much more of a focus on exploration, and i only say all this because I don’t want you to be disappointed going back x3 previous zelda titles are still sprawling and beautiful and full of amazing places to explore, but it’s impossible to not be dwarfed entirely next to BOTW’s take on hyrule and the freedom it grants you to truly go anywhere.

the second preface is that you can play any of the games in any order you want! there is a timeline but it’s largely irrelevant, just additional lore if you want to know it haha. all that being said...

if you tell me what you like in games, i can more easily tell you what zeldas you might enjoy! what kind of art styles are you into in media? what about tone? do you like things to be more lighthearted, or dark and somber? what do you like most about BOTW in particular, what aspects of it really pop out to you? Is it about the story for you, the characters, the gameplay, or all of the above? Any of these questions can point me in a direction to recc you your next Zelda. the more info you have for me on what you like, the more accurately I can tell you what games will likely suck you in.

i’ve played almost every zelda because what gets me personally is the cycle of reincarnation and seeing Link and Zelda Know Each Other in a hundred different ways haha. soulmates au :P

Uhh speaking of terrible terrible nuzlockes have you ever heard of a version of Pokémon Crystal with The Most Broken English called Pokémon Vietnamese Crystal? Well my most recent terrible terrible Nuzlocke is of that and it's fully randomized so I'm having to teach myself to understand the broken ass English in it to try and keep my team from dying. That's a skill, right?

Alright, that's fair. Uh... oh actually this could count for 20 too actually but I finally got off my ass and learned to RNG manip for Cute Charm shinies in Gen IV, that's totally a skill. Yes all of my skills are just me playing video games I peaked in fifth grade okay-

22. What’s a hobby you’d like to start learning?

Okay this is awful because I've had the materials sitting downstairs for like a year and a half but I swear if I ever get any time off with this whole covid thing I'm gonna finally start making dice :0 It's just that I don't have the molds made yet and that's not too much of an issue for getting started but the resin I have takes two days to cure since it's epoxy and not UV, so since I only ever get one day off in a row most of the time I haven't gotten around to it yet. Someday...

Pretty good! A lil burpy cuz I just ate, a little cold and salty because the wind and rain broke my Master Sword umbrella earlier (biggest f) and now it's snowing goddammit guys it's April I know I live in Maine but for fucks sake if I have to shovel any more I swear to god- but other than that I'm good!

Hello! So ive recently followed your blog for ac but i noticed you love loz too! Link and Zelda are one of my fave otps and I've been wondering if i should buy botw? It'll be my first loz game ever and im hoping it wont be too difficult?

omg hi !!! you should you should !!!!! it’s probably my favourite game ever :,)

you might feel a little overwhelmed at first because there is SO. MUCH. YOU. CAN. DO. but just take it at your own pace !! follow the main quest guides and do any side quests as you bump into them. you can set yourself goals like finding all the shrines or completeing all the side quests, cause there isn’t any time limit ! unless u feel guilty abt zelda being trapped in the castle like i did ://

the cool thing is that when you finish the game you can go back to JUST before you fight ganon and continue playing! that’s what i’ve done, so anything you think you’ve missed you can always go back and do again!

and of course if you get stuck there are guides out there to help you ! i sure as hell used a few to get myself going and they’re very helpful !!!

you will love it i promise !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ABSOLUTELY thank u for enabling me to go off about designs i love this shit this may get a bit long so its going under a readmore (sorry if ur on mobile i hope it works)

gonna start this off with im no expert Nor have i taken any sort of official art class this is me just analyzing characters from what i found that makes them memorable to ppl (most of these examples are going to be from games sorry i got them on my mind)

ok so basically making a memorable revolves around personality and appearance now theres different ways to go about showing these things and i think from consuming media you like will help narrow down how you wanna go about it, basically thinking about your character inside and out!

SO shapes and hyperstylization is a good way to get a fun appearance across in a cartoon esp media and is often what a lot of artists stress on an example of using shapes and a good silhouette to make a memorable character is sonic!(specifically comic sonic)

(had to google idw sonic for a non...u know image)

but not only do they use lots of triangles for this hedgehog they also made him blue! you’d be more likely to remember a blue headgehog over a realistically colored one!(also almost all of the sonic characters have a combination of fun shape + unusual color to help you remember them! the designs werent afraid to use color to make a bold statement)(he’s also segas mascot so of course they put a lot of work in his design)

now sonics appearance is not the only reason why people like him or remember him so much he’s also got personality! he’s cocky, fast, always getting into trouble, “you’re too slow!”, accompanied by shitty butt rock and a cool guy persona ie he’s got personality! and they weren’t afraid to give him some weird interests(see the butt rock) and he’s not perfect( see arrogance) if youve ever played a sonic game you have almost always remembered the crush 40 theme that went with it

all in all to go with his unusual appearance he’s got some unusual traits! it helps make him believable! admittedly he’s not the most embarrassing of the sonic crew (see knuckles or shadow) but he’s definitely rounded and not boring from an objective standpoint(you can not like sonic or his games i dont care)

(another example of something that requires good shapes is pokemon altho they arent really like very depthy since there are 600+ and some only have like a pokedex entry worth of info but still they have good and memorable designs)

NOW something that doesnt have the most “good shapes” design off the top of my head is link

now in the most recent zelda game his most memoriable physical attribute is that he’s on the androgynous side w his longer hair and smaller build but in his older designs he looked something like this

not really that much of a striking silhouette, but what do we look at and kinda leaves an impression on us? his hair and hat! its very silly to see someone in such a big green hat with that big of bangs/mullet, the hat at least became so ridiculous of a look that in botw nintendo didnt include his hat in links main outfit bc it was too hard to make look good, its silly! thats good! its fine to have a normal human looking characters because sometimes stories are about humans, but if you want us to remember them include something that will strike us as strange for them

also probably a good thing to note is the noises link makes when he swings his sword, jumps, pushes something, ie any action they have always been something that has stuck with me

(another example similar to this is in mgs solid snake in mgs is this cool super spy but is rocking a full on mullet which is considered a joke hairstyle. this leaves an impression on us. a spy with a mullet! how ridiculous! another example is raiden who was specifically made bc a woman wrote that she didnt want to play as an “old man” so the protagonist of the super spy game is a longer haired pretty boy (with a huge ass))

now ive explained a little on a character with good shapes and personality and a character with a more “boring” shape design that makes up for it with almost quirky design choices but i feel like theres another series thats what originally got me thinking about how even a memorable silhouette doesnt need hyperstylization

ace attorney! (which is out on switch now if u havent played it i would def recommend it)

if you dont know the protagonist is the guy in the blue suit(phoenix), which well he looks like just a guy...with ridiculously spikey hair enough so that in his silhouette you can recognize him but also his posture (the pointing) makes for a sticking recognizable image bc if you’ve played the games you can practically hear objection just from looking at phoenix’s silhouette

which is another thing id like to talk about! not only are a good shape a way to have a good silhouette but posture is also important! how the character holds themselves can say alot about them just from a glance! such as meekness, arrogance, confidence, sadness, anger, happiness its a very important too especially when you arent relying on stylization

now onto the characters of ace attorney ive gone over phoenix's design a bit but theres a few others id like to look at with some Weird style choices that make us remember them(just going to glance over them since this post is so long)

now, this woman, franziska von karma, she dresses kind of strange for a prosecutor but her outfit is not too out there and her silhouette is not striking

but you see that whip? remember how i said she was a prosecutor? yeah she will strike people in court for getting off topic and will even hit phoenix when he starts breaking down her witnesses testimonies, which what literally strikes up about her

another prosecutor, godot, now his hair could provide a somewhat memorable shape but what we first notice is the strange mask on his face which is weird, but not the Same weird as franziska bringing a whip to court thus having both of these prosecutors being Weirdly memorable for different things (another note is his liking of coffee that he does not give up even in court ha ha)

now onto the other protag for the aa games

apollo! who also has weirdly spikey hair, but even if you put a silhouette of him next to phoenix you could tell there some was a difference between the two! its showing a pattern with the protags while also keeping them distinct enough to be able to tell who is who! although you cant say the pointy haired guy from ace attorney and not get just One answer unlike saying the prosecutor who has a whip but still they are distinct to people who have little experience with the series

sorry i dont have any sort of conclusion on this this was just sort of me rambling on about character design, but my main point is if you are discouraged bc all your characters dont have wildly different silhouettes thats ok! there are other ways to establish a good memorable character! dont be afraid to make them a little weird! give your character pink hair in a medieval setting, have them be ridiculously in love with tigers they have a striped shirt and pants, let them love childrens tv shows and have them never miss an episode, give them wacky hair or an extreme love of gum, show us some personality!! but dont forget about how they act and their values and dont forget that posture can go a long way for establishing a first impression

there are also many other methods to making a good character! like colors and dress!

silly is the way to go! have fun with it!!

there isnt just one way to make a good character!! theres plenty of more series that have good character design that i didnt mention pay attention to why you like the characters you like! also watch this video bc its really good
