Horror movie hot takes // Matt + Chris

Again, I’m sorry that this is not my proper writing, but don’t worry! My breeding kink oneshot is on its way, I gotchu guys ;) I’m hopefully going to be dropping it some time in the middle of the week, so this is just some light and fun reading to do until then whilst you wait - if you want of course… pls humour my stupid ideas lol.

Thank you to whoever suggested this because I’ve been dying to give u guys my breakdown. Horror is one of my FAV genres, idk why, I just love scaring myself. Also, I don’t have just one to share with u guys, but three different options each because it’s such an expansive genre with so many probable things to pick from. You guys can probably tell that I have way too much fun with these things… (Plus they’d look good in multiple different genres and I rlly wish I could add more but I don’t want these to get too long bc they’re meant to be hot takes).

Obviously, a couple of the pictures I’ve used for the visuals may be potentially triggering as they contain blood and other disturbing bits of paraphernalia, so please if you’re squeamish, proceed with caution!!

But anyways…

Matt:

First up Matt’s most likely to star in some type of rural corn maze horror. I’m thinking proper Southern gothic style, low quality, out in the sticks and with only a small population in the farming town where he resides.

I could so see the storyline following the main character who moves to this place, but very quickly gets that sinking feeling in her stomach that there’s something not right about the town, from the way the locals look at her to the way Matt speaks when she first arrives. There’s got to be that cliché plot line where something suspicious is afoot, something that she wants to unearth.

Matt’s character gives off creepy neighbour vibes, like the kind that watches the main character from behind his curtains as she unloads the moving truck. This Matt is properly country too, from the cowboy boots on his feet to his red flannel shirt and his shotgun that he randomly carries around because he’s a sheep farmer (do I envision him using his country accent, yes, yes I do).

Long story short, the rural town isn’t just a town, it’s actually a cult, and the reason the farmers rear cattle and mind sheep is so that they can conduct ritualistic sacrifices with them.

(I lowkey wish this was a movie I’d eat this kind of twisted shit up)

For his second movie I’m absolutely obsessed with the idea of putting him in a domestic psychological thriller- so proper stalking vibes. I’m thinking something like ‘You’ but almost making him a more extreme version of Joe Goldberg.

Possibly he’s maybe the main character’s co-worker, who takes the secret affection he has for her a little too far? Or even just an absolutely psychotic ex that refuses to let her go… In short this is the kind of movie that doesn’t quite give you that exhilarating rush of jump-scares, but instead tries to make you as physically uncomfortable as possible with an absolutely horrific instrumental soundtrack playing underneath it.

I’m not sure why I chose this branch of horror, but something about the way Matt looks just really did it for me, it’s so difficult to explain but his physical appearance fits the overall image of someone with an obsessive attitude towards a loved one.

Three words. Found footage horror. These kind of horror movies scare me the most because of that idea of it being ‘found footage’. Equally, ‘based on true story’ horrors also mildly unsettle me just because of that idea that it’s been reimagined from a real life event.

Matt’s found footage is giving ‘The Blair Witch Project’, I can defintely see him out in the wilderness with a bunch of his really close friends, all with camcorders in their hands as they document their time camping in the woods. Until everything goes terribly wrong. And they get lost. And are picked off one by one until Matt is the only one standing.

There is no soundtrack this time, just heavy breathing, crunching leaves underneath running footsteps, the sound of the wind in the trees and the occasional blood curdling shriek of whatever is hunting them down.

(I should seriously become a director lmaoo)

Chris:

Now onto Chris… most people often think Chris would thrive in a classic 90’s slasher flick- like ‘Scream’ or ‘Friday the 13th’ which I’m not going to argue against because he really would look great in one. It fits his overall vibe of being the jock boyfriend that is one of the first ones to die after him and his girlfriend stupidly break off from the group to ‘fool around’.

HOWEVER, I personally think that a game show gore horror is more his speed, it fits his skill set better. I feel like Chris would be really versatile in this kind of high-pressure environment and I’d honestly love to see him in a franchise like the ‘Saw’ movies (I want to hear him whimpering in pain) -WHAT…? Who said that??

This Chris is just an ordinary guy who works an ordinary but depressingly mundane job that does not come with the best pay… so what happens when he gets an ad mailed through his letter box promising money to whoever volunteers to try out this new and exciting game for a reality tv show? Well it’s simple, Chris would do anything for a dollar, so he signs up- not taking into account at all about how advertisements like this aren’t normally personally mailed to a person and that quite possibly this letter had actually been specifically targeted to people who were known to be in desperate need of some spare change.

The result? A wicked sadist trapping these poor people into machines and torturing them for his own personal gain.

(Fuck I love this idea)

This next one is a bit of a curve ball but roll with me here… a deep sea horror. Fun fact about me, I have horrible thalassophobia, and a severe fear of sharks (I know, stupid) but I can’t help it lol, they terrify me. However, still rolling with the overall cocky/jock/playboy characterisation of Chris, I could definitely picture him being some form of deep sea diving protege that’s a cave diving expert.

He’s a side character in the thriller that is called in when they need help with locating whatever monster lurks beneath the waves. Due to his speciality in the field, he’s one of the best, and co-leads a team of divers through a cave to see if they can sus out its location.

This Chris likes to wear a lot of blue things, and he’s constantly either smugly chewing on gum or is biting a toothpick within his teeth with an air of superiority about him. The soundtrack helps with the overall gritting suspense of the movie and keeps you on the edge of your seat constantly with jump-scares around every corner.

And finally, who the fuck would I be if I didn’t rope Chris into a zombie/pandemic apocalypse horror? Because this kind of movie has Chris written all over it, real TWD style. For some reason, within the whole horror genre in its entirety Chris fits the branch of gore horror the best, blood, guts and big spectacles of action packed violence. You name it, Chris looks like he could be apart of it.

In an apocalypse kind of situation, Chris would definitely be either a side character who you meet maybe about half way through the series - possibly from some other rival gang that threatens to steal your weapons - or one of the original main characters that have survived thus far. His weapon of choice is definitely either a trusty crowbar, or a classic metal baseball bat, something that he can really swing and satisfy his frenzied killing needs with.

Aesthetics wise, he wear a black bandana to keep the hair out of his face, a white tank top and army green cargo shorts. Pair them with some heavy duty black boots and you’ve got yourself a mighty attractive apocalypse survivor to spend the rest of your shortened life span with.

Author’s notes: someone needs to take my phone AND my imagination away from me immediately at this point, it’s too powerful when they’re put together. I get wayyyy too carried away with this shit lol. I have such a vivid imagination it’s insane to me, I be writing whole ass screen plays for these Jesus Christ. But anyways, I wanna see those two in a horror movie so fucking bad (if you couldn’t tell hehe). Or maybe just watch a horror movie with them… like- dw baby boy I’ll hold your hand at the scary bits hahahaha.

So when people are more... sly about their intentions, like wording and such, he prolly won't notice

But the second he gets wind of what they are tryna pull

MY FAVOURITE PLACEMENTS FOR EACH SIGN (with explanation of course 😚😚)

remember, don’t take this too seriously cause this whole thing is fully based on my own personal opinion so im sorry if I didn’t mention your placement(s). don’t be offended okay?! MUAH I love all of yall 💋

Aries: I’d probably say 50% venus 25% moon 15% sun — honestly this is kinda hard for me cause my best best friend is an Aries moon and I get along very well with Aries moons however… this one girl that I broke off all contacts with cause she was obsessive ( she still hasn’t stop💔💔 even though we stopped talking for 2 years, super creepy) 50% venus because omg literally almost every single lovely person I know has that placement it’s mad. maybe it’s bc my venus conjuncts theirs (I’m also an aries venus) they express love in a way I adore so 💕💕 for aries sun, 25% because I’m only close with one aries sun but she’s literally so fly I love. but she says some weird stuff occasionally though she’s too unfiltered HAHAHA love that.

Scorpio: scorpio venus — I really love scorpio venus individuals omg. they’re always there for you and always ready to attend all your big moments without fail. I had this one friend who has a scorpio venus and she take time out of her own busy schedule to train me for my interview and we stayed at the place until like the sunset it was so wholesome. not only did she do that but she was with me when I got my interview results like I was so shocked I thought she stayed cause she also had something to do afterwards but turns out she had nothing to do and she planned to wait for me and leave right after omg i literally melted. I treasure her so much and because of that I’ve always had a good impression of her. super sweet individuals. little cinnamon buns, warm and sweet. they also really are big on physical touch cliché I know but it’s real HAHA. everyone should have a scorpio venus friend or significant other 😭😭💋💋

Sagittarius: sagittarius moons — out of all my close friends in my click, half are sagittarius moons, it’s literally mad. they’re such unique individuals all of them have different personalities even though they have the same moon. but one thing they all have in common is that they find the weirdest stupidest unfunniest jokes funny. it’s mad. I can pull out a photo of a cat on the ground holding a fish and they’d be cracking up like mad. they all really enjoy being around positive and responsible people, people who are like them. they always burst out laughing idk y they try to hold their laugh but they never laugh normally. I love them though it’s always so comfortable around them MUAHHH💋💋

MAKES ITS EVEN FUNNIER LOL. y’all tend to text a lot and are quite talkative actually. love you guys cause you guys never hesitate to make the conversation about the other party rather than yourself LOL JOKING ( but FR though you guys make me feel like the main character whenever I’m talking to u ) 🫂🫂

Aquarius: mmm i haven’t really befriended many who have aquarius placements so this may not be relatable😭😭 sorry!! but I’ll have to go with aquarius moons. — I tend to get attracted to aquarius moons cause they seem really fun. idk why but they all seem like a ball of sun to me. they remind me of fluffy cows HAHAH. they’re really cool individuals and they’re really kind. super sweet people who are always willing to help you and take initiative LOVE THEM💕💕. wish I get to know more aquarius moons, they’re just so loveable and reliable. 🫶🫶😚

Pisces: pisces moons 50% + pisces risings 25% + pisces mercury 25%💕💕💕 — OMG pisces moons BRUU literally my babes. I love them so much. they’re always there to help. they’re really responsible people even though they like to have fun. best people to have for group projects. they’re also really good at putting themselves in other peoples shoes hence making them very good at comforting others. very good friends that would do anything for you. they tend to radiate the same energy you give them so always give your best to them for you to receive the best💪💪 for pisces risings, I just really like they’re features. they all give like a reserved energy and many people would think that they’re really high achievers and admirable people with a cute face HEHE. they’re really sweet and awkward at first but once you get to know them omg it’s a huge difference they’re little devils LOLOLOL (in a good way🤫🤫) I tend to have many pisces rising friends maybe cause their rising is in my seventh house but 😚😚 whatever. they’re little choco pies, random ik but it just fits their whole persona . pisces mercuries are really chill people who like to talk. I love them so much cause like tend to relate to one another a lot and i just love to talk to them because they’re so easy to talk to. just pull out a random topic and they would prob be able to talk about it, very versatile speakers. also, they don’t really share their opinions at times. like sometimes i want to eat something with them but their whole face writes “no that looks disgusting” so I ask them if they’re sure that they’re fine with the restaurant and they say that they’re fine but they’re not really fine LOLOLOL they’re so cute HAHAH love them. they always put others before themselves.

Gushing About Zhu Hanbin and Jing Yanqiao in The City of Musicals S2

The City of Musicals (S2, at least) is kinda like The Voice. 24 musical actors, 3 troupes, covering musical numbers, elimination every episode. Season 2 focuses on young/fresh talents.

I was on a Zhu Hanbin(LG musical actor) binge and got really into this show once I found out his frequent CXS counterpart, Jing Yanqiao, is there as well. Now seems like the right time to make this post since JYQ's birthday is soon (April 13th!) and everyone barely knows him so, to begin here's a cute interaction they had on weibo after what I can only assume is a Link Click rehearsal.

You can access the full episodes here. But I'm going to discuss and link each performances under the cut.

Oh yeah, before I start. I have notes of the context of some performances (not including them bcs I only researched some and not all), so if you like any of them and would like to dive deeper or just wants the context in general just ask and I'll share what I have. (That said, the 10th is Ied so I might be busy and took a while to answer)

Scouting stage (Ep.1-2)

They are sorted into groups of three and perform together as the same character.

For Forever from Dear Evan Hansen

Performed by Sun Tiecheng, Zhu Hanbin, and Wang Haoran. I love ZHB's expression in this performance, it's very innocent and hopeful but also with a hint of hurt? It fits the vibe of the song. It's a really nice, soft and hopeful performance. ZHB's expression really paid off since he got scouted into 2 troupes. Funfact, ZHB and Wang Haoran are classmates lol, they didn't know the other auditioned on this show before they got sorted together. Their third teammate felt very awkward lol.

Dans Le Noir Je Vois Rouge from Le Rouge et Le Noir

Roughly translated to "In the dark, I see red" performed by Alladin, Jing Yangqiao and Tian Ye. It's very good, dark and angry vibes. It's from a French rock musical so yea I really like it. I know I wanted to highlight JYQ but the original rap that Tian Ye (right) arranged is definitely the best part of this performance. The three of them worked really well together. Also, Jing Yanqiao was asked if he felt pressured performing with his seniors (he's still in school) and he answered yes, but most importantly he was intimidated by their heights. so cute lmao. Don't worry JYQ, you're still taller than ZHB. This is also 1 of the only 2 groups where all three performers get scouted.

Sidenote: I found the original song and I've been translating it to practice my French lol. In fact, I found a recording of the whole original musical.

Round 1 (Ep.3-4)

Each troupe prepares 2 Duo performance and 1 solo performance.

No Longer Human from No Longer Human

Performed by Sun Sankai and Zhu Hanbin. Yes, as in the Osamu Dazai novel. ZHB played Yezang (Oba Yozo) the protagonist of the novel and Sun Sankai played Osamu Dazai the author. So this is an existential conversation between author and his character. That's probably why this set design is creepy, but in a good way! An amazing duet, very powerful vocals from both of them, a very nice listen. But damn those hands are wobbly and every time I watch them climb up it, I worry if its gonna fall. Also, camerawork feels like something out of a 2nd Gen K-pop music show lol. And ZHB is barefoot for some reason... If I caught it properly it's bcs he's scared of falling off the hand? I need to double check but understandable.

Therapy from Tick, Tick..., Boom!

Performed by Jing Yangqiao and Feng Difei I couldn't find the cut version of this performance so you would have to do with the timestamped link of the full episode. This is such an adorable and fun performance. I love the cutee original phoneline choreography they have and how their voices work together. Also, JYQ and Feng Difei playing couples and going on a date bcs the coach tells them it would help their chemistry. Why are they lowkey kinda cute though. The post-performance interview of this reads like a blind date interview istg. The interview keep asking questions like what JYQ got her for her BDay and if they have made each other mad like the characters in the musical, etc.

Round 2 (Ep.5-6)

There are 2 troupe duo performances, and 2 cross-troupe trio performances.

The Other Side from The Greatest Showman

Performed by Sun Sankai and Zhu Hanbin. This one is so good, soooo good. I already liked the song before but their voices fit this song really well. Then you get to see, ZHB can dance y'all. I like how energetic this performance is, they really ran around the stage and walk across the table. Special mention to Sun Sankai who practiced that hat kicking trick to perfection, he got to a streak of 100 successes during practice. And to the bartender too, I love his expressions.

In A Crowd of Thousands from Anastasia

(In fact, they're paired in a new musical "Love Myth" airing next month) Truly giving off a romantic, magical, and almost fairy tale-like feels. I love how sweet it is. The mini-them also did a good job with their performance. Fun fact about this one, JYQ played in Anastasia musical before this show and is still currently playing in Anastasia, both as Dmitri, just like he did in this performance.

It's Not Me It's You from uhh pretty sure it's an original rap based on disney villains. So it's from Disney, I guess.

That said, the rap is really good, I like the flow, I like the beat, it's great. I jusst, those outfits lmao. Even JYQ posted on his weibo how the outfit simply wasn't it. I can add the photo he took in the rb but pls just watch the performance.

Disappear from Dear Evan Hansen

Performed by Jing Yanqiao and Zhu Hanbin. Yes, they both performed together in this one! I couldn't find the cut version again, sorry. IDK why, maybe it's copyright? For now, timestamped link. I can't explain why, I really like this performance and I really like their dynamic. Their voices also goes nice together but I know that already from watching them together in the LC musical. So yea, this is good. Though, ZHB being projected as JYQ/Evan's hallucination of Connor is kinda goofy looking. Also, so far ZHB has been kind of type-casted as the innocent boy or bright-eyed young man in need of guidance type so to see him playing a more aggressive/leading character (though not by much) is nice.

(JYQ doesn't have that problem, literally he was scouted by the troupe bcs they feel 'he's young and thus can be molded into anything'. ZHB did have to help him perfect the anxious boy act for this performance.)

Quarterfinals (Ep.9)

A trio performance from each troupe, along with a single cross-troupe performance.

Believe in Miracles from Ultraman (yes, the superhero show)

Performed by Sun Sankai, Zhu Hanbin, and Jing Yangqiao. Original skit. Both JYQ and ZHB act as students to Sun Sankai's teacher. The song sounds vaguely familiar to me, maybe that's why I like it so much. It's very fun, rock vibes. JYQ intentional voice crack in the beginning cracks me up. It's a very energetic song too, makes me want to pick up a guitar and jam along. (No, IDK how to play the guitar beyond the basics lol). It honestly looks like they were an idol group or something. (LC Idol AU anyone?)

Goodbye Cassini from Cassini

Performed by Zhao Qianlong, Zhu Hanbin, and Tian. I'll be honest, not a big fan of the skit, it is better enjoyed as just a goodbye song to a beloved space probe, but I am a huge fan of the song (Original ver. here with subbed lyrics, it a got more opera? vibe to it. both ver. are very good though.). I've been randomly humming 'Goodbye, my Cassini~' for days. I am so tempted to make a fic based on this song. Tian (the girl) really carried this performance with her angelic vocals, it's so great and heartbreaking. Her heartbreak at having to leave her friends behind and knowing full well they're never going to meet again. If you're watching this one, I highly recommend you wear your headphones. Trust me, it will cleanse your ears. And if you want to skip straight to the song? 5 minute mark.

Semifinals and Finals (Ep.10)

The semifinals are duo performances of an original musical number. The finals are a solo performance from the top 2. They are available on spotify and youtube music.

The Greatest Show from The Greatest Showman

Performed by the top 4 contestants: Zhu Hanbin, Miao Mengqing, Jing Yanqiao, and Zhou Mohan. I don't have a lot to say about this one. Really nice performance, a bonus to a great episode. Yeaay, both of our LC boys got into the top 4!

Assassin

Performed by Jing Yanqiao and Miao Mengqing To be honest, not the biggest fan but maybe that's just me not being a fan of historical drama in any form. JYQ used a fake facial hair, so that's something too I guess. That said, it's pretty nice to listen to and the dance/sword fight choreography is really cool. (Though as someone who used to do choreographed fights, I feel kinda dissapointed it's more sworddance rather than swordfight.) Miao Mengqing's voice is really powerful, just listen to her. Unfortunately JYQ was eliminated here, but he reached the top 4! I'm proud of him. He also learned the choreo and to play the uhhh (it's 1am, lookup instrument nme later) in only a week. So that's cool.

Don't Believe him

Performed by Zhu Hanbin and Zhou Mohan. This one I highly recommend. This song is an emotional banger and I've been listening to this on loop for days. The choreo and staging is good too, although there's one part that I think is a bit goofy (thankfully it's not too distracting). The fight/struggle choreo they did here have more power than Assassin so I really like it. Really cool, makes you wanna punch a bully, I love it. ZHB played a bullied kid and Zhou Mohan plays ZHB's 'perfect' dream self who wants to keep him in this dream world and away from the hurtful reality. This song (as well as Assassin) is available on spotify and yt music, but the live version is 10x better because it captures the emotion better. You can hear ZHB's desperation and sadness as well as Zhou Mohan's anger and frustration, it's great.

Lonely Mountaintop from The Devotion of Suspect X

Performed by Zhu Hanbin. It's good, I enjoy it. Though as a final song I do kinda wish he picked a song with more power? IDK. It's still good though, it's emotional, I love the build up, the set design is pretty, and the song fit his voice really well. ZHB won 2nd place with this song. Congrats on your hard work!

Miao Mengqing won first place and honestly? She deserved it, she's so good. But this post is focusing on our LC actors ZHB and JYQ so uhh. Please watch her final performance singing "I Have Nothing" here, it's so great, she's great, I love her voice so much.

Fun fact, JYQ did not vote for ZHB in the finals lol, he did it right in front of ZHB too and I'm pretty sure at that point they were already announced as cast in the LC musical. (Sorry ZHB, but I too would vote for Miao Mengqing there)

Last bonus (which I'm not gonna link) before we end this post. In the 3rd episode, around 20minutes in Zhu Hanbin and Jing Yanqiao did an advertisement for their water sponsor together and they're very awkward, it's funny to me.

8. That Time I Got Drunk & Saved A Demon by Kimberly Lemming--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

First five-star read of 2024 🙏🏽

My friends have read this book and LOVED it, so I don't know why I'm lowkey surprised by how much I enjoyed this. I thought it would be a cheesy and slightly boring read (I didn't read the synopsis, okay? Sue me.) But what I got was SO far from that. Full of adventure, heart, sexual tension, and hilarious sass, I found myself laughing and paying rapt attention.

I loved the MC and her responses and commentary. I can see myself re-reading this just to highlight all of her sass. She's one of those contemporary characters set in a fantastical world that helps keep these kinds of stories light and fun. There's a scene where the demon just stares at her like "Okay, so we are definitely getting married" and I don't even blame him. This woman is a BADASS.

I loved their exploration of their world and how quick it was. Some readers might want more setting development, but honestly? I'm happy with how light and straightforward it was. I also really liked the side characters and how the demon just takes out anyone he wants, especially if they threaten the MC.

This was fun and everything I wish that other cozy fantasy book had given me. The new editions of the other two books have already been preordered 😌.

9. The Thing About Jellyfish by Ali Benjamin--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

THE THING ABOUT JELLYFISH perfectly encompasses the tortures of middle school, the changing of the people we once called friends, and the effects of grief and how a child's mind may twist in ways that might help them comprehend the reality of death.

Ali Benjamin does a fantastic job of drawing out the history of her MC and her friend. The way they both changed and how the MC came to choosing to stay silent verbally for the majority of the book. Watching her trying to find reasons for why her friend has died was heartbreaking. I can't imagine being a parent in that situation, where you know you can't help your child comprehend the change in their reality.

Also, middle school is a cruel place for a lot of kids (hi, I was one of its victims) and the levels of evil some of these kids get up to is truly astounding. It broke me a little watching this friendship fall apart and this poor, young MC having to remember the last moment she saw her friend alive.

Sometimes things just happen and this whole book is, ultimately, a great source for children grieving. Life can be messy, confusing, and sometimes heartbreaking. Benjamin's novel is beautiful and this is another one of those middle grade books that I think adults AND kids should be reading.

10. The Skull by Jon Klassen--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If no one has read any other Jon Klassen books, then they're in for a surprise. If they have, then they'll recognize the eeriness of his writing.

You can't tell me that the hat books aren't creepy (there's a couple of pages where the big fish CLEARLY eats the little fish in the long grass). This guy is morbid and props to kids' authors who can write a book both for kids and adults.

The artwork was beautiful as always and the story was a very, very quick read. Perfect for those 5-7 year olds who want to try something themselves but don't mind a talking skeleton or skull.

This also got reeeeeeal dark at one point and I was just thinking of how some of the Gen Alpha kids are.

Highly recommend--especially for those littles who love a little spooky with their bedtime stories.

11. The Fiancée Farce by Alexandria Bellefleur--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Romantic, at times funny, spicy, and full of characters I wanted to punch in the dick, THE FIANCÉE FARCE was entertaining from beginning to end.

Much like many of my reading experiences, I jumped into this without knowing what I was getting myself into and imagine my joy and surprise when the trope of "marriage of convenience" popped up. I loved watching these characters fall in love with each other, and I loved seeing the thwart the horrible people in their lives. I also loved that one of the MCs has a massive love for reading (shown through her family's bookstore).

Was this the best romance I've ever read? Not really--it had some pretty obvious climactic points and some very over the top villains--but it held my attention and I fell for the couple. I loved that one helped the other find her confidence that had been stripped from her at a younger age.

One of the things that keeps me from giving this a five star rating is how...in a bubble this story feels? Like, we meet other characters as they serve their purpose (as is the usual) but if they're not in the scene, it's like they don't exist. There's one scene where one particular character doesn't speak and it's a pretty pivotal moment for the reader to pay extra attention because this is a huge hint about this character, but Bellefleur doesn't even hint at it? It's like that character is deleted from the scene. This is like taking the adage of "when you're with me, I only see you" and using it to the max.

Other than that, this was an entertaining and sexy story of proving assholes wrong and falling in love despite you believing that you're not deserving of love. Highly recommend for enough looking for a cute romance full of family drama and fake relationships!

12. Ana On the Edge by A.J. Sass--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Such a powerful story!

One of my favourite messages that ANA ON THE EDGE could potentially give young readers that it is OKAY to be in the process of trying to figure out who you are, but also that it's okay to not have all of the answers at once.

We see the MC struggle with their identity and their relationships throughout the whole book, especially because their world has always seemingly had such clear cut gender norms (Ice skating is a huge part of her world). I can't even imagine trying to find who you are when everyone around you is imposing who they think you are on you.

I also enjoyed that we got to see some of the more pivotal relationships in the MCs life and that messy in-between with friendships when big changes happen--like sudden schedule changes, or new friendships blossom. While this book tackled pretty big topics, I liked that its core it was still truly an MGLit book that explored the importance of friendships and keeping the good ones alive (even when life gets a bit hectic.)

Finally, I adored the relationship between the MC and their mom. I loved that they were a team and even though it took a little bit of time, they had some good communication between the two of them. There were some heartwarming moments and I loved seeing them understand each other better as the story progressed.

I think this is another great LGBTQ+ book to have in my back pocket for when I need to recommend great Queer books to readers!

13. Mindy Kim & the Birthday Puppy by Lyla Lee and Dung Ho Hanh (Illustrations)--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It's been a while since I picked up the last MINDY KIM book but this was just as cute as I remember the last two books being. There were some moments that made me tear up a little, but I'm just an emotional mess sometimes.

I loved seeing Mindy come into her own with her brand new puppy. A couple of my best friends have a puppy and as I read Mindy's adventures (or misadventures), I thought of how difficult it was for my friends to parent a brand new puppy. This is a kid's book, so I'm not surprised Mindy was able to be so successful so quickly, but in reality, puppies are a lot more work than what was shown here. BUT this didn't take away from the story at all! I love that this could be a really great resource for littles who want a puppy, but need a further understanding of the responsibilities behind it.

And much like the last two books, there were some important topics explored here: how families might look, grief, multicultural traditions, and responsibilities one might take on.

Another great addition to the series and I'll hopefully be reading the next one soon!

14. Suddenly by Isabelle Autissier--⭐️⭐️.5

I had a lot of expectations for SUDDENLY by Isabelle Autissier, but we all know expectations are sometimes the death knell of a story. The cover enticed me, the synopsis further pulled me in, but the clunky translation full of thesaurus-level words and the random time-jump totally took me out of the story.

Normally, I DNF books that aren't working for me because hi, I have a massive TBR to get through before I die. But I will give Autissier this: she wrote a very intriguing beginning to her book. I wanted to see these characters survive and thrive in their new environment. A morbid sense of intrigue had me continuing the story as they mercilessly killed creatures I never thought someone could kill so coldly, and as they had massive introspection about their super privileged lives (and their first world ignorance about their importance in the grand scheme of things.)

These two characters were severely unlikable, but I couldn't help but get attached. I felt such a mixed bag of emotions towards the FMC and when the time jump happened, I felt further disconnected from not just her, but the story as a whole.

I'll be blunt: the second part of the book (or more like 3/4 way through the book) ruined this for me. I understand the importance of seeing the story of the "after" but I hated it. I think it went from being an interesting exploration of survival and humanity to the superficial experience of society marking you as a hero for surviving. I get that this is also the point: the further examination of how society is in (the character's) reality vs. the truths they realized about the societies they had grown in and how wholly unprepared they were for the battlefield of survival. I get that, but I still disliked it. From there, I felt like the story dragged and my attention wavered even more.

And don't get me started on the ending--the page I thought was going to be the last page was a better last page than the actual last page.

Overall, I liked the first half of the book. Despite the dark aspects, the gut churning choices, and the heartbreaking conclusion, I enjoyed that part. The second part of the book brought the whole story down for me.

15. Fake Dates & Mooncakes by Sher Lee--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

FAKE DATES AND MOONCAKES was a pretty straightforward and easy read, but listen, it was FUN. This felt like I was experiencing a K-Drama or C-Drama. It was such a good time--the dramatic twists, the threats against the middle class guy dating the rich guy, and the CRAZY RICH ASIANS-like trip and event? Freaking amazing. LOL the love interest literally waits for the MC outside of his school standing by his Ferrari. This is juicy Asian-drama level stuff and I ate. it. up.

The romance was adorable and sweet and I won't lie, I sometimes forgot these were teenagers--not because of anything gross, but because these two were so mature in their actions and how they interacted with each other.

The familial relationships were so sweet and I loved how they clearly had each others' best interests in mind whenever something pivotal happened. They were adorable and I loved them.

Reading this was like experiencing some of my favourite Asian dramas again, with a dash of CRAZY RICH ASIANS. It wasn't an earth-shattering read, but five stars for solely being entertaining and making me smile with giddiness. If you want a cute gay story with some truly cute moments, then you might like this--especially as a read for when the warmer weather finally returns!

🔆 The name Iliana (ill-lain-a.) means ray of light; from Illium or Troy. Iliana is a feminine name of Greek origin. This name likely finds its roots in the Greek word “hēlios”, which means “ray of light” or “sun” and may even be a form of the name Helen, best known in Greek mythology as the most beautiful woman in the world. So her full name roughly translates to "a light in the darkness".

🔆 Pretty chill and well-adjusted kid given the circumstances! Though she has a tendency to come off as a little "creepy". To people given her looks and sharp teeth. (Her happy sweet smile can be unnerving to people just like Idia's)

🔆Traditional gender roles means little to Yume and Idia but for Iliana it almost doesn't exist. She calls Yume mom or dad based purely on how they are feeling that day, and if she's not sure just calls Yume "Dimi" short for the Greek word δημιουργός (dimiourgós), meaning 'creator'.

🔆(I have a running 'joke' that she was accidentally created in a lab when Idia accidentally mixed his and Yume's DNA together bc he was lowkey researching a way to break the Shroud curse.) So sometimes she'll call Idia 'mom' too bc the Greek word for mother (Μητέρα ) literally means "one who gives birth" and in this scenario...that was technically Idia LOL.

🔆Idia 100% has her chipped but its in the form of a pretty necklace that also monitors her vitals/health. All of them have similar matching ones so they can know they are safe, except for Ortho's which checks on his system and functions.

🔆Idia 100% carried her ass around in a baby carrier while doing S.T.Y.X. duty, never letting her out of his or Yume's sight. Even when Yume says they can take care of her while he works, he doesn't wanna miss time with her.

🔆Yume has their own job in the future which makes them have to travel a lot! (Luckily its magic so they can usually come back home to Idia the same day.) But sometimes they have to be gone from work for months. Sometimes they take Iliana with them and other times she stays with Idia and Ortho. Idia gets really sulking during these times, but doesn't ultimately doesn't want his kid cooped up and trapped like he was as a child.

It's a delicate balance but they all still talk every day via voice or video chat wherever they are. For a good half of the year they can all be together, which is the best!

🔆Idia and Yume argue about whether or not she should be homeschooled (Iida pro and Yume anti) eventually Yume wins and on her first day of school Iliana is cool as a cucumber while Idia is on the verge of tears dont @ me. She has to comfort him.

🔆Grim still lives with Yume in the future and as such in his free time is a babysitter. He acts like its a big deal and beneath his amazing skills but he loves her just as much and would 100% kill for her. When she was younger he let her ride on his back. (This made Tiana very jealous bc Grim would not let her do it, bc cats hate each other lol)

🔆 She likes cats but really wants to get a dog in the future and is always trying to convince her parents!

🔆She "Hacked" in Yume's phone to get Uncle Leona's phone number just to ask him to play chess online with her.

🔆Leona doesn't mind spending time with her cuz she's a chill kid and doesn't bug him for much. (This makes Tiana super mad too! lol) 🔆She really loves her cousin Tiana and considers her to be her best friend.

Summary: The first night at The Hard Deck Bob finds a friendly face, someone who he instantly feels comfortable around. Although Bob maybe hopes to get to be more than friends with the sweet Fanboy. (And maybe Fanboy already has a girlfriend but maybe that's not a problem to them at all... This is me setting up the scene for a possible throuple later on bc I'm self-indulgent like that)

Part 2 | MASTERLIST

Bob was early. He liked to be early.

Or maybe he was just always so anxious – anxious about meeting new people or being late or just most new situations – that he panicked and left home way too early.

But that was okay. It gave him time to take in The Hard Deck, its people, and the overall vibes of the early evening. He got himself a water and some snacks from the friendly bartender, Penny, and chatted a few moments with her until she had to go serve other customers.

Bob picked up his water and his cup of peanuts and went to sit at the high bar stools next to the pool table. It would be an excellent place to people-watch, which he liked to do. It was fun to observe people and how they behaved, what faces they made and how they moved, trying to guess what they were doing or feeling at any moment. It was interesting to him, something he had always liked to do. His mom was the same way. Quieter and liking to observe, always very aware of her surroundings.

However, it wasn’t until two guys dressed in Navy khakis – like he was – walked up to the pool table that things got truly interesting for personal reasons too.

Bob spotted their patches sporting their callsigns as well as the ribbons on their chests. Pilots, and extremely successful pilots at that. Even before Bob heard them talk about a mysterious upcoming mission, he knew they were all there for the same reason.

He could have crossed the short distance to the two pilots and introduced himself, but looking at the two men who both honestly looked like they had stepped off a fashion magazine page, and knew it, Bob knew they wouldn’t give him the time of day anyway. Unless maybe he fell onto his knees to worship the successful, handsome pilots, but he wasn’t really feeling like doing that. Bob quietly snorted to himself and continued to watch the two friends play a game of pool full of funny banter and trash talk.

The second truly interesting thing wasn’t even something he spotted at first. It was the blond pilot, Hangman, who called out, “What do we have here?”, as a dark-haired woman (Phoenix, Hangman called her) with two guys in tow stopped in front of Hangman and the other, Coyote.

Bob watched with increasing amusement as the woman introduced Hangman as Bagman to her two companions, and the duo behind her proceeded to help her roast him. Payback and Fanboy seemed like a well-oiled machine already based on this interaction, and Bob was willing to bet they were a team used to flying together.

Maybe he paid special attention to Fanboy. Maybe Bob’s gaze lingered on the other man’s gorgeous, warm eyes. And maybe he found the hard set of Fanboy’s jawline almost irresistible.

Bob realized he was staring and quickly looked down before anyone noticed.

“When did you get here?”

He lifted his head, suddenly finding all their eyes fixed on him.

“Oh, I-I’ve been here the whole time,” he smiled and nodded awkwardly. Drat, maybe they thought he was a creepy weirdo for just sitting there and watching without saying anything.

“The man’s a stealth pilot,” Hangman commented.

“Literally,” added Coyote.

As if sitting there awkwardly with peanut crumbs in his lap wasn’t enough, Bob further embarrassed himself by taking Hangman’s joke about him being a stealth pilot literally. This always happened, he didn’t realize someone was making a joke and he had to correct them and–

“And with no sense of humor.”

Hangman dismissed him, just like that.

“What do they call you?” the woman asked. She was the one who had noticed him there in the first place.

“Bob.”

“No, your callsign,” the tall one, Payback, asked with a small grin.

“Uh…” He swallowed nervously, “B-Bob.”

This was not going super well for him. People usually chuckled a little learning his callsign, but he didn’t care enough to start always explaining that it wasn’t because his name was Robert. People didn’t explain their callsigns. Of course, if you were someone cool like Coyote, you probably never had to anyway.

It turned out he was Phoenix’s new backseater, and he felt relieved that her first instinct wasn’t to dismiss him too. She did, however, give him an appraising look with her sharp eyes, but apparently, he passed the test, because she then handed him a pool cue and told him to play.

The WSO felt relief wash over him, and he even smiled as he got up and approached the table. At least it seemed he would get along well with his pilot, which was already a win.

He relaxed more as the game went on, chatting with Phoenix, and even Payback and Fanboy had joined in. Bob liked the duo right away. They were really funny and overall a good time, and they were both very kind despite their tendency to joke around and rib people.

Bob stuck close to Fanboy for the most part, immediately hitting it off with the other WSO. They found common interests even outside of their shared job, and Bob quickly learned (without asking) that Fanboy’s callsign most likely stemmed from the guy being able to rattle off all sorts of facts about the things he loved. Bob found it endearing, and even better, it allowed him to mostly listen to the shorter man talk without needing to contribute as much himself.

Bob was also like 75% sure Fanboy threw a few lightly flirty lines at him, which made his stomach flutter pleasantly, but Bob was never good at trusting those instincts (what if he read it totally wrong?!). He kept blushing a little, but Fanboy didn’t seem to mind.

It was easier to interact with the rest of the people now, too. Bob always felt like he needed one safe person, one anchor, and then he could feel a lot more comfortable. Now he had at least two anchors, in the form of his pilot and the other WSO.

Even Coyote was friendlier now. When Hangman snatched the pool cue right out of Bob’s hand (Hangman clearly had his focus only on Rooster tonight), Coyote offered Bob a beer, perhaps as an apology on behalf of his friend. But what Bob really appreciated was the pilot not questioning him at all when he declined the offered beer and stuck to his water instead. It was amazing how many people took it as a personal offense that he didn’t drink. It simply wasn’t his thing, and it was really weird having to defend that choice to grown adults. But Coyote just nodded and moved on.

Rooster was someone who Bob had met before, and he went to say a quick hello. He liked the pilot. Rooster was always friendly and took everyone into account, a trait which Bob appreciated in people, and apparently, Phoenix knew him well, which seemed like a good sign too.

And when Rooster moved to sit behind the piano and Phoenix motioned for them to follow, Fanboy actually grabbed his hand and pulled Bob with him, as if making sure they still didn’t have to be separated even for a little bit.

Bob blushed again but followed the excited aviators to see what was up.

Great balls of fire was what was up.

It was the most fun Bob had had in a good while. He was already starting to feel like he belonged, like he was making friends, and he had such a good time he forgot to feel super self-conscious and instead found himself relaxing for once.

And he let himself enjoy the feel of Fanboy’s hand brushing his. Several times. For the rest of the night.

He tried not to overthink it.

Come next morning, Bob wasn’t quite sure he was successful at that last part.

Stepping out to the cool(er) night air outside The Hard Deck, Fanboy immediately shot his girlfriend a text:

Babe, I met someone tonight I think I want you to meet. I think you’d like Bob.

Now, about this new blorbo *cracks knuckles* Like I was saying on that other post, I recently rewatched the 10th Kingdom, a kinda obscure 5 parts mini series that I'd watched once as a kid when it aired on tv, and asolutely adored. I then spent the next two decades desperately searching for a piece of media that would make me feel the exact same way that this show had at the time. Also could not for the life of me remember the title, and I had half convinced myself that this whole series was a fever dream and that it didn't actually exist. Skip to a couple of weeks ago, where I saw a random tumblr post mentioning this series, awakening all my memories of it, then I found that all 5 parts of it were available for free on youtube. Thus began my obsession with the 10th Kingdom again, and more specifically with Wolf. My best friend. My pal. My homeboy. My rotten soldier. My sweet cheese. My good time boy. Wolf is the love interest of our main girl. He's also a werewolf. Half-wolf. I don't know. He's got a tail. He sometimes grows fangs. His eyes can change colors. He howls when he's sad, he growls when he's angry/horny, he scratches his head, he tries to cook grandmothers, he says "huff puff". He's basically the big bad wolf from fairy tales but played by a normal looking guy. Yeah cause I haven't mentioned it yet, but the 10th Kingdom is just a seven hours long love letter/parody of fairy tales. Think similar to Shrek. Or Once Upon a Time. With over the top acting, terrible special effects, and a plot that's either very dumb and silly, or rips your heart out, there is no inbetween. Also it's very horny. Again especially with Wolf. I cannot overstate how not subtle the show is with this, from the acting to the dialogue. When I watched it as a kid, these parts completely flew over my head though, so I still consider it a family friendly show. Anyway, this show also has prolematic elements (my main beef with it is that the only POC actors we see in it play trolls. The trolls are very cool though), and just in general, it's very much a product of its time. However, I still love it, and I think it's worth giving it a try, especially since it's all on youtube for free. Sorry, this ended up being more of a propaganda post for the 10th Kingdom in general 😅 But yeah, Scott Cohen as Wolf really did a great job making him a compelling and likeable character. He manages to be creepy and funny and touching, and you can tell he was having a lot of fun in this role. I lowkey wish I could draw a hookdust 10th Kingdom au but the vibes are so different, I don't think it would work. I guess Wolf and James are both tormented guys with a dark and destructive side to them. But James is a manipulative prick, whereas Wolf is completely unable to pretend.

ok hi! pinned post time, since I'm finally using this blog a bit!

I'm Jack (or JT, or Jackalope) and I've been writing for most of my life but I really haven't shared much yet. hoping to change that soon, though! hence this blog. :]

I have WAY too many ideas and WIPs to list 'em all, but here are a few of the writing projects I am currently focusing on...

A Tale Of Two Spies (And Some Other People) (Many Of Whom Are Also Spies)

...or ATOTS(ASOP)(MOWAAS) for short, lmao. It's the first fanfic I ever started writing; I was lowkey too intimidated to try writing fanfic for a long time, but this idea sank its teeth into me and I had to give it a shot. It's an alternate version of the Tin Can Brothers' epic musical Spies Are Forever. I've been working on it for a good while now and it has ballooned into quite a massive undertaking because I am... deranged. <3

Part one, The World's Greatest Spies, is a prequel. It will cover the span of time & our favorite agents' changing relationship from their first meeting to the beginning of the musical. I have MOST of it outlined, and I'm really having a lot of fun with it!!!

111 Waylon

Another fanfic, but this one is for Starkid's Hatchetfield universe! It's heavily inspired by I The Mighty's song "111 Winchester."

111 Waylon is just about fully outlined with 12 chapters, and it will be much shorter and quicker to write than ATOTS, lol. I'm actually going to start writing the first draft very soon! (like... tomorrow. 👁)

This story is about the night some of the popular teens from Hatchetfield High decided to hang out at an old creepy house that definitely isn't haunted and definitely isn't dangerous. Everything is gonna be fine, no need to worry. <3

The Necromancer & The Musician

This is an original work! It also doesn't have a real title yet, even though I've been working on it for almost a year lmao. help. I've done SO MUCH worldbuilding, including designing an entire glyph alphabet for my sneaky secretive necromancers to write all their sneaky secrets in, and I've been having an absolute blast with it all.

The characters in this story mean the world to me, especially the two leads: Zadock Severine (the antisocial necromancer who is Perfectly Content with their life as it is, thankyouverymuch) and Everett Flair (the overly friendly musician who likes to wander and is always on the look for his next fun experience). The two are brought together through the meddling of the nosy god Death (who gave Zadock their magic and is a little too invested in their social life) and become unlikely traveling companions. Oh, and they're both trans and aromantic. 😎

Legend of the Dragon S1 Ep 14-26 Watch and Rewrite

Remember how I wrote that by the midway of the show, it was really picking up steam with more tension and intrigue between the siblings and the guardian world in general? It delivers by making Ling more human and less psychotic, Ang is less naieve, and there are far less slo-mo. Actually, in some episodes there is none and when they do use it, it's for appropriate dramatic purposes instead of filler.

Now, it's not without its flaws. The animation is still wonky at times, and it haas its generic melodramatic moments like there was four consecutive episodes in a row where Ang shouts at Ling when she leaves again. And I know it's supposed to be angsty but I just keep thinking of

Without the romantic conotations of course, but the melodrama yep.

Luckily it dies down. The humor (especially the sibling teasing) is top notch, creepy final boss villain, has some unique guardian powers and expands lore. The second half is a vast improvement and nicely sets up urgent business for season 2.

Now to the episodes, beware spoilers unless you want to watch it on youtube.

Sister, Sister has Ling split into four when she steals the rabbit armband and you can imagine the headache everyone has in having to deal with an angry Ling, a depressed, apathetic Ling (that is Valley Girl for some reason), hungry Ling and peacemaker Ling. Zodiac Master has the biggest migraine of all when he gets overthrown by the Lings (literally, he's literally thrown off his own ship) and goes to the gang for help.

While he relaxes in jail (confirming that regular Hong Kong police think he's a nutcase), the group goes to the Rabbit temple where the rabbit guardian, Hye has Ang all aflutter with a crush and Bengail with jealousy.

While this is mostly an amusing episode, I found the attempted character romance to fall flat on Bengail's side. While Ang is clearly experiencing his first crush (that's not going anywhere) and appreciates Hye's sympathetic ear in regards to his complicated feelings on his sister, Bengail's jealousy felt petty as she wouldn't even admit to her feelings. I just appreciate Hye for her maturity in playing along with Ang's crush and assuring Bengail that she has a role at Ang's side and can't be replaced. But tbh, I found her VA's high, soft voice to be lowkey annoying.

I would rewrite this to have Bengail's jealousy over Ang's crush lead to a real fight over Ang feeling unsupported. He knows he shouldn't trust Ling and he mostly doesn't but he's tired of everyone dismissing his hope that she'll change. Everyone expects him to forget that she's his sister and they had seventeen years of history, good history. She wasn't always an evil psychopath and he feels like he's the only one who remembers that and he's tired of being called naive and a fool when she's the only family he has left.

Then Bengail can go into her own feelings since Ling had been her friend too and why she's much harsher on her.

Otherwise, this was a fun episode with plenty of funny moments too and wit as Ang tricks the Lings into turning on each other as they figure out who is the real leader and whose the clone. Also apparently the only thing the clones agree on is shopping which is so random but funny. It does highlight a flaw that while the Lings go shopping, there are no background people. Maybe the clones scared them off but it’s more likely the animators didn’t have the budget to populate Hong Kong which makes it feel very empty.

Associating with Vermin: Another good episode where Ling tricks Ang into believing the rat guardian, is actually her in disguise pitting them against each other before she ambushes them and takes the rat band.

By the way, the rat guardian is a feisty twelve year old girl, Ming (I think she's around the age) whose armband allows her to shapeshift into different animals (mainly rats and snakes) and wolverine claws. Literal wolverine claws! So cool! Seriously, why do they make the guardian powers so much cooler than the protagonists?

And while the rest of the episode is predictable in how they team up to take her down using 's knowledge of her temple, it's full of funny lines. Like when Ling does the villain monologuing explaining her deception and complains no one recognizes her brilliance.

And -- just roasts Ang the entire time like when she says that the only protection she needs is protection from someone stupid enough to be tricked by their own sibling and he's supposed to be the golden dragon, not an oversized twit.

Also Xuan Chi getting to be the voice of reason is always fun switch of personalities.

Shell Game brings the return of the monkey band when Azng finds that a museum curator has it and in his attempt to not tip off the Zodiac Master goons that are spying on him, he accidentally lets the curator place the armband on a suit of samurai armor.

No problem right, they just go back and steal it back. Yeah, Zodiac Master gets it first and brings the armor to life so he can use it like a jacked up samurai monster with monkey powers.

Unfortunately since he cast a spell of evil it bites him and Ling in the butt when the samurai turns against them with another enemy of my enemy team up that ends up blasting the samurai to pieces and the monkey armband is lost to the wind again.

If I had to change the episode I would just remove the trite fight between Ang and Xuan Chi on the morals of stealing and give Xuan Chi a bigger moment to shine as retrieving the monkey band is so important to his arc. There had been a moment when Xuan Chi decides to fight the samurai armor on his own because it's his armband and duty, it is played for laughs as he quickly runs at the armor's might. If it was played straight, it would have added more bathos to this fillery episode.

Thief of Power: A big time thief breaks into the dojo, seeking revenge on Master Chin. But before he does, Master Chin goes to Vietnam and the gang goes to get answers from Shoong and Chin. Yes, it's backstory time!!!!

Apparently, Tommy the thief was actually the Pig Guardian whose greed led him to abuse his powers for thievery so Master Chin put him in jail. The big surprise is that Master Chin and Shoong were the ones that secretly broke him out because they needed him to complete a sacred ceremony to recharge the pig armband for the next 12 years. An interesting addition to the lore here is that one retains the power even in disgrace which explains Tommy's awesome moves and tank-like build.

So it's up to Ang, Bengail and Xuan Chi to keep Tommy from getting the pig band while keeping him within the temple for the ceremony to work. It was cool interplay and this might be me getting used to the show but I feel like there was less slow mo in the fights so that was a plus.

Horse Play had almost no slo mo! We’re getting places and by that I mean, Xuan, Master Chin are heading to the horse temple which Chin warms that things aren’t as they seem.

That’s certainly true as Ang has to trust his instincts rather than his eyes to find the temple under the lake. I just find the setting choices for each temple cool especially as the horse is supposed to represent

From there, Ang fights the Eternal Maiden who initially disguised herself as Manaho, the horse guardian but was so touchy feels and seductive that you know she’s bad news.

At the same time, Chin and Xuan Chi find the real Manaho who warns they have to get the armband back before the volcano explodes.

It all ends as predictably as expected but I thought it was a solid plot with good fight scenes. I would just give Manaho more of a personality, tying it back to the horse zodiac, specifically fire horse by showing her high spirited enthusiasm and well, fire. Something to make her more distinct as a character.

Darkest before Xuan was a fun episode giving the pathos to Xuan that was missing in Shell Game. After being easily bested in a fight by Zodiac Master and Ling, Xuan feels more down about his skills as a sole combatant. His self esteem takes a further plunge when the former monkey guardian comes and rips him a new one.

To be fair, he’s a grumpy old man the others don’t like as he considers them just kids and Bengali is more pretty than a warrior. And he’s bitter that Master Chin made him retire for Xuan to take his place.

So Xuan goes to the dark side and gets a shadow band. Why he thought he’d be able to use it without getting corrupted, I have no idea but he gets corrupted.

There’s fights and eventually Ang and Bengali save the day and remain Xuan of his worth but evil!Xuan is super entertaining. I just generally like Xuan’s arc of insecurity, confidence, slide backs and so on.

Venom has a ticking clock plot when the Zodiac Master sics his cobra on the snake guardian, Cobra (I'm guessing that's a psyudenom or else her parents knew the future) poisoning her. And without her snake armband, she’ll need an alternative antidote or the snake armband, whatever comes first.

Oh and their doctor from the mainland is an actual shapeshifting snake.

Pretty decent episode and has cool moments like Ang getting to use his dragon armband and Bengail’s Tiger armband in tandem. Like that’s the kind of creative action I want to see (tho I still they could have gotten a lot cooler than what they did do). Plus Zodiac Master backstory, apparently he had been the Snake Guardian before he turned evil. That explains why he attacked the snake temple in the pilot. I just wish they included it earlier and maybe showed a bit more of Cobra instead of her being unconscious for most of it. She was all British and badass in the pilot, she should be conscious more.

Empower the Darkest Ling brings back the spirit of the Emperor of Yin who possesses Ling into a dragon snake hybrid to with the power of shadow tiger/dragon/snake. He is on the hunt for one more armband since he needs four armbands to come back to life.

Know who else is on the hunt for the shadow armbands? Ang and the gang because while the shadow armbands keep the world in balance, they're still corruptive.

It ends in battle, it’s not Ang vs Ling but Shoong and Ming come to help for a big guardian showdown.

And while Ling won't admit to being thankful for their help in un-possessing her, she says she's not ready to go back. Being possessed by the emperor gave her in even more power than what she would have with just the shadow dragon band or the golden dragon band. She wants more.

But in big twist, she comes back to the dojo with the shadow tiger and shadow snake bands, warning them that the Zodiac Master cannot know but she is worried what would happen if the Emperor was resurrected. It cannot happen.

It shows that there's still good in there. She doesn't want the world to end and it gives Master Chin hope for the first time that she can change.

I know it all sounds like the plot for the second to last episode or part 1 of a finale. It's only the midpoint but I'd argue it would make a better finale.

That’s why the only change I would make is to rearrange the episodes. Zodiac Master trying to resurrect the Emperor should be a bigger deal and should build to the finale instead of popping up midway and having a bunch of episodes in between.

So I would switch The Last Dragon to episode 11 since that’s when Ling starts showing a hint of good again and is more willing to truce and help her brother.

I would put the scene of Ling giving the shadow armbands to Ang in the end of Emperor of Darkest Yin since that would be after the emperor tries to suck her into the tomb, thus sparking her fear that she's in over her head.

Spy Hard then would be ep 24 where Ling fights against the Zodiac Master for trying to corrupt the dragon temple. It’s then she realizes how far she has come from her original goal to get the dragon band and double cross Zodiac Master before he does real harm. Because again, she wants to win with honor.

Then it can segue to Empower the Darkest Ling as episode 25 where Zodiac Master seeing that he is losing control on his second in command, has the Emperor possess them both in an attempt to seize more power and irreparably corrupt Ling which it does by sparking her thirst for more power and goes into the finale of Double Dragon as episode 26. Yes, much more angsty, dangerous and in keeping with the episode title.

Hair of the Dog has a mad scientist turning into a man-wolf, one powerful enough to overthrow Chow Chow (the dog guardian remember) for man animal supremacy.

Luckily, Chow Chow’s pug heads to the dojo for help, preventing another Golden v. Shadow Dragon showdown. It’s a classic writer’s trick when you want to make someone sympathetic, make them like or rescue an animal. And even though I know what they’re doing, it does work to see how much Ling cares for the pug dubbed Cruiser.

The episode also improves her in another way. After they all save the day together, Ang once again offers Ling a chance to stay, even get all the pets she wants. And Ling shows that she has gotten over her petty jealousy of her brother. She no longer cares about being Golden Dragon, but she cannot return because she doesn’t want to give up her shadow dragon.

The only thing I would change in this episode is the pug. Yes, he’s adorable but it would be more culturally significant to have a pekingese or a shih tzu since they were bred in ancient China to guard their temples just as the guardians guard their temples.

X Games Guardians: In the early 00s, there was an interest in the skating craze. X Men Evolution did it, Scooby-Doo did it and now Legend of the Dragon is trying to show how hip they are with the kids by having some young skaters unintentionally steal the ram armband from Zodiac Master.

From there it’s a game of “keep away” with different skaters trying out the ram power as the gang tries to get it back before the Zodiac Master blasts them all in fury.

It would be pretty forgettable but it’s saved that they have Ling on the side of good again and bonding with the original thief/street urchin, Jungi, who she sympathizes with trying to be let in the inner sanctum of the big kids (or in Ling's case, becoming a guardian) and pushed aside (though Ling kinda deserved it).

A way to fix this episode would just get rid of the slang and x games references. Keep the interest in skating since that will always be popular but try to not to date it. Also, make the teens more competent so they aren’t outmaneuvered by a bunch of preteen skater street urchins, I mean that was just embarrassing.

Lost and Found has more revelations for the twins about their supposed dead family members. After fighting with the ram guardian, he accidentally let it slips that she seems so similar to her mother. He supposedly dead mother.

So Ling goes to Ang so he could ask for answers from Master Chin. And yep, she’s alive but amnesiac and the former ram guardian!

Another solid episode that expands the backstory, improves the twins relationship with some good banter and doesn’t end too sappily with their mom automatically regaining her memory. Rather she’ll try as she reacquaints herself with her old yet oddly familiar home.

Monkey See Monkey Do: For Xuan Chi's birthday, we go on yet another search for the monkey armband that leads to a walk on the evil side for Xuan. Well actually, a walk on the wild side since the evil mask Xuan Chi puts on to make up for his lack of power turns him into King Kong. I am only a little disappointed that they didn't take advantage of the scenario to do a classic king Kong holding Zodiac Master on top of the temple scene.

Anyway, Xuan Chi learns his lesson not to use evil to his advantage, it will only corrupt you. While I like that they have the monkey armband be an ongoing arc, this one felt repetitive in the lesson of the day and in the scenario.

The only intriguing parts were Ling's willingness to tip off the good guys to prevent Zodiac Master from getting all the armbands to resurrect the emperor, and Ang talking King Kong Xuan with the classic 'Fight it, I know you're in there" speech.

Others may find it a cheesy cliche, I still enjoy the trope. I feel like it could have been stronger by having Ang recount Xuan's growth throughout the season and their friendship. You know, really pull the heartstrings.

Double Dragon: I have no rewrites here. This was a good finale that has almost all the guardians returning, and Bengail and Xuan get their own spotlight moment in the final battle. The Emperor has a cool design. And it has Ling facing the ultimate temptation when the resurrected Emperor of Darkest Yin goads her to getting the golden dragon armband so she can have the power of yin and yang in ultimate balance.

I just wish Ang had just a big chance to reflect on his growth and how he's progressed from slacker, naive, and undisciplined to the wise, competent Golden Dragon he is today. Also Cobra didn't return and no one turned into a dragon, still waiting for a cooler power upgrade there, but maybe that will be revealed in season 2.

And for the first time, I realized just how dark skinned, Ang and Ling are when in Golden/Shadow dragon form. I must have been oblivious but it does feel weird. Both as a race thing and the artists couldn't keep a proper color palette thing.

Also cliffhanger, it has a very intriguing cliffhanger that will make fighting Ling and Zodiac Master small potatoes.

hello merms! i've recently been on an animal crossing binge, just for some relaxing and time away from everything else, because its just a very fun and easy game <3 (also combatting the cold and dark days by playing a game where i can see the sun) i am currently designing my island (trying to get to 5*'s!! i just unlocked terraforming and such) and went to yours because i wanted some ideas (i've been to your island once, in 2021 for your birthday! it's changed so much — everything changes when things go on for long enough) but i am here to say that i loved your island tremendously !!! your house is so cute and its full of personality, and tbh exactly what i imagined your house (irl or otherwise) would look like!! i loved all the music you had playing and ur lil bkg poster <3 i saw you in the dream and all you said to me was 'don't talk about it' LMAO kinda creepy, kinda on brand? i'm also very jealous that you have shino!! she's next on my list for villagers (i am lucky enough to have sasha [my favorite], and raymond, along with a few others i enjoy)

The animal crossing party in 2021! That was held on Cat’s island—Gratitude. 🌻 Fun fact, I drew Gratitude’s flag. 😌✨ But i’m so excited you came to Hettisland!!! 🥺 Good luck on the five stars!!! I believe in you!!! I hit three stars and then just accepted I’d never hit five, LOL (i have too many trees! Isabelle tells you the islanders are complaining about getting lost among them, if you over do it!). Cat gave me some of the Lily-of-the-Valley that grows on Gratitude, so I use them to dot around Hettisland instead of worrying about growing my own. 🥺🌷

But lmaooo, I’m glad you liked my resident home. 🥹 The current version has taken a lot of fussing and random midnight trades through AC groups—dream home woes. 😩 And of course, on top of that, we had to represent our boy. 😌💥✨ His code actually replaced a space filler i had before, so for ages after downloading it, i was finding random Bakugous dotted all around my island lmaooo.

when you mentioned Henrietta (my island rep) was saying creepy shit i was like, ????? but then i remembered i’d entered it as my passport comment. 😭 humiliating, LOL. i got on and changed it today, though, so it’s less… ominous (“I’m gonna catch bugs!” which might be still ominous but is hopefully better suited to the vibes of Hettisland lmaooo). 🥹 speaking of horror islands though, have you ever visited Purgatory? Evil Imp makes like, little movies with New Horizons and their island is like a haunted film set, LOL, it’s so intricate! Creepy too, although sometimes that’s dispelled when you’re walking past some whistling islander, LOL. But apparently Evil had poured like, 1600+ hours into the island by the time the dream address was available to people. 🥺 It’s really fun to explore!! Every house tells a story!!!

Shino!!! Yeah, she’s a cutie—she was a camper, and at the time I had a rooster I really hated (he was a snobby, and I already had one—plus he was lowkey kinda mean LMAO i couldn’t tolerate it), so I asked her to stay. Mostly though I just take what I’m given, in terms of who shows up on the island—i think the variety is fun (unless it’s that hateful rooster!!!)

Welcome Home: Halloween Update

well hey would you look at that !! the website got updated for Halloween!! very very excited for what new stuff we've got this time

(also yes i know this update came out a while ago i just didnt have the time to check it out until now ok !?!?!? its been weighing on my mind since i found out about the update)

somehow Barnaby manages to annoy almost everybody pretty easily (and by everybody i mean Frank, Julie and Sally) its very entertaining

also i agree that Terror n' Treats is a banger name i think that the very long name is the name of the party and not the holiday but either way both names are very fitting for Halloween

the ba-dum-tss when Barnaby makes a pun is sooo funny

i think Sally is like the embodiment of that one tumblr post where its like 'we should normalize nicholasnames. extending names instead of shortening them' or smth its very funny

[He paused.]

…Oh! I almost forgot. I also saw a bug, sitting on a leaf. It reminded me of Frank. After that, I turned around and went home.

SALLY: …And what part of that story was supposed to be scary?

WALLY: Oh. I don’t know if it was scary. I had a nice day.

FRANK: Well, I liked the part in your story about the bug, Wally.

this is so cute?? Wally's just the most a silly little guy the music while he was talking im laughing

SALLY: [Sally begins, her tone serious and grave.] Have you ever wondered… Why it is that we stay indoors every night?

and now the audio's glitched out on 'what it is searching for' and it scared the crap outta me glitched out audio is scary as hell

oh wait what ?? the audio came back and it is very clear huh... i wonder why the restoration team couldnt hear it because its not in the transcript and they mention that the audio cuts out at 16:56 and comes back 18:51 and right now there is audio at around 17:16

ok Sally's story about the supposed creature that comes up at night scared the shit out of me and what makes it scarier is how clear the audio is like it doesnt have any static-y noise like the rest of the audio, its very clear

then when she stops talking i was waiting for a jumpscare but it was just Poppy walking in with some treats

'don't forget to wave up high' !! it makes the inversion of it on the News page stand out more because its not just a Halloween thing, right??? this official Welcome Home merch storybook audio says it the way its always been said before, so why is the News update different???

ok so this seems to be a continuation of what happens after the storybook audio, or like at the very least connected to the party its all the neighbors chatting with each other which is very cute

the video started with the usual static that the other bug videos had, and the transcript says 'The camera (?)' so its safe to assume that this is from Wally's perspective

ok uh the video and audio started distorting um.

OH I JUST NOTICED THAT THE CARAMEL APPLE STARTED MOVING

zooms in randomly on the caramel apples in the shape of the characters

i think thats a Wally one behind the Howdy(??) one

a bite was taken out of the apple and no one was shown to have grabbed or bitten it so. i think this is canonical confirmation of Wally's weird thing where he stares at a food, blinks, and then theres a bite taken outta it cuz thats how he eats i guess??

hmm the transcript is a little interesting too, but i might just be reading too much into it

wait ok so i went back to the distorted part and i thought it was weird that if the perspective WAS Wally, then why is the camera not looking at the apple?

and then i remembered that the video briefly zooms in on a caramel apple with Wally's face

and it might just be the video distortion but it looks like it blinks and after that the apple has a bite taken out of it

but thats obviously not Wally so maybe its more of a hint of whats really happened for anybody who doesnt know Wally bites with his eyes

Been thinking about the boys and holidays, obviously Halloween is a fun day for them but how about the others?? Like Christmas, new years, Easter valentines.. I see them loving 4th of July since they could blow things up.

hi hello!! soo dagger lowkey really loves christmas (childlike wonder). he never really got to fully celebrate it when he was with the bakkers (they did what they could) but does have fond memories locked away from his childhood (some of the ONLY fond memories from his childhood). dum dum never really thought much about it at all, never had anyone to celebrate it with growing up, and it generally made him lonely. but now they get to have it together and i can't say it's traditional exactly, but dagger puts up the weirdest niche creepy ass cursed decorations he can find and they have a raggedy looking charlie brown-esque tree adorned with bones and halloween lights that's definitely a fire hazard and leave gifts for each other (but most are for cockroach).

dagger can get a little intense for valentines day, he is a very passionate person of course and he *will* bring gifts of fresh cut hearts and entrails, usually in some kind of weird artistic macabre configuration (like a cat bringing a dead mouse to your door). dum dum doesn't always understand this exactly, but he does know it's a high form of romance coming from dagger so he always appreciates it. he also gets dd in the habit of making things for dagger, modifying knives or just soldering together old weapons and shit to make something new. usually they'll end on a casual dinner at some humble diner (probably after holding people at gunpoint and/or torching half the restaurant) and then catch a show at the closest bar and start a fist fight in the moshpit before fucking in the bathroom. you know, romance.

the other holidays are usually just an excuse to blow things up and/or get wasted except easter which dagger occasionally goes to church for. it reminds him of his mom and its something that makes him feel close to her. he doesn't always do this, only sometimes, when his mind is right (rarely). he doesn't tell anyone, not even dum dum, he doesn't even make a plan to go he just. shows up there for a little while and then leaves probably to commit murder (he contains multitudes).

#x: perfect drug #before dagger gets to NC and meets dd he usually spends most holidays completely wasted alone and talking to himself or murdering #so there is some mental health improvements if u can believe it #dagger convinces dd to go out to the badlands to catch the nomad firework shows underneath the open sky. then they start mixing explosives #to try and make a better show UwU #dd handing dagger a knife with like 10 blades attached to it and his face immediately lights up like this was probably a bad idea #but look how happy he is!!#dagger also secretly loves really cheesy christmas movies but dont tell anyone

oh god the reader-insert-ness of sooha in the webnovel is sO BAD MAGS. i physically cringed a few times. have a Lot of thoughts abt the sooha i wish we had because yes !!! a sooha with walls built because she has trouble trusting people !! because her whole life she's been judged and been an outcast !! a sooha who fights for her life first and asks questions later because she's just so afraid !!!! and a process of opening up and learning to be vulnerable and loved !!!!!! i also very much see a moment for her when she realizes that if the vampire boys with all their dumbassery/weirdness (and borderline creepiness when you think of the night-prowling) can manage to be the most popular students at decelis, hell, maybe she can too. sooha is a character with a Long way to go in terms of self-love too and i wish her arc could be dedicated to accepting herself in all her uniqueness and growing to be stronger with friends like her by her side. you know, instead of getting a boyfriend. i will not lie to you though, i do still enjoy canon sooha's positivity and bubbly energy. its fun to picture the dark moon boys and sooha like the "sunshine/sunshine protector" meme too, if you know the meme. just sooha w her seven besties that would kill a man for her

OKAY HEAR ME OUT. SHION AND JAKAH ON THEIR LITTLE CRYPTID WALK AND THEY DECIDE TO RACE EXCEPT SHION ON THE CEILING AND JAKAH ON THE FLOOR BC SHION SWEARS ANTIGRAV CEILING TRAVEL IS FASTER THAN NORMAL RUNNING AND JAKAH IS OBVIOUSLY LIKE "i am literally superpowered in terms of speed" AND SHION INSISTING ON RACING ANYWAY (jakah wins ofc and shion ends up kind of dizzy and motion-sick after)

SO MUCH. id have so many plans for an actually good dark moon novel bro im not kidding like id probably make sooha way more traumatized than she is in canon because i like writing traumatized characters but..... there would be SO MUCH . and hell id probably come up with an entirely different backstory for sooha and the boys and how they were connected Before because the whole princess + knights thing lowkey makes me cringe HDJHFFJGF

BUT ANYWays. SOOHA. YES. the sooha we could have had........ *wipes away single tear* shes so beautiful bro :') EVERYTHING YOU JUST SAID IM HAVING SO MANY FEELINGS . sooha with walls a mile thick !! sooha who fights first and asks questions later !! yes !!!!! a sooha who's just. so constantly afraid all the time of being cast out or shunned or even KILLED for something she's not even sure she IS, and covers that fear with the biggest show of bravery she knows how to put on because the fear only lets them know she's vulnerable. don't let them know. never let them know

like you said though i do like the (webtoon) canon dynamic of her being sunshine and all the boys being her seven sunshine protectors (that dynamic is my absolute shit shjfbfjfb its SO sweet) but even then id like it even better if the dynamic was less focused on sooha and heli's romance plot and more focused on... sooha..... like just imagine. a sooha that's aggressively sweet and kind and cheery, a sooha that's unwaveringly positive, precisely BECAUSE she's been through so much shit in her life and she doesn't want to be the "evil, murdering vampire" that everyone sees her as, so she covers all her bad parts up with a sunny attitude and a bright smile, hoping that people won't hate her that way. she's friendly and personable, but after chris she always kept people at arm's length so that no one could find out the truth. this sooha still needs to learn how to love herself, and be vulnerable; how to accept that who she is isn't something to be ashamed of. hell, she might even be on par with salty defensive brash sooha in my head :')

[HELP i didnt mean to go and make sunshine sooha angsty as well but. really all my headcanons for her boil down to her being ostracized and attacked all her life and building up walls to protect herself, just in different ways. now that i think about it my ideas for a lot of characters (whether they're headcanons for other characters or ideas for my original characters) involve them putting up masks to hide their true selves/feelings so that they can't be hurt, whats up with that actually--]

OKAY NOW ON A MORE POSITIVE NOTE. i just got the very funny image of the "sunshine and seven sunshine protecters" image with sooha and the brothers but,,, she is ALSO very capable of killing a man. so like some dude comes up to her and tries to pull some shit and all the vamps are like "grrr hands off our bestie >:(" in the background but she fucking annihilates the guy before any of them get the chance to do anything. (sunshine protectors who WOULD kill a man for her but usuallu dont need to because she's completely capable of disposing of them herself)

a race with jakah on the ground and shion on the ceiling.... thats such a funny image bro im in love with it. and then at the end when jakah's waiting at the meeting point they agreed upon and shion finally, FINALLY reaches it (like a full thirty seconds to a minute after jakah lmao), he drops down from the ceiling spiderman-style, wrapping himself around jakah and knocking him to the ground while hissing "you fucking cheater" in his ear. and jakah (dying from the full weight of shion on top of him) is like "ITS LITERALLY MY POWER WHAT DID YOU EXPECT--"
