Love, that elusive and mysterious emotion, has captivated you since you first heard about it. The concept of love is a feeling of warmth, passion, and a connection that's deeper than anything else, impossible to ignore. It's terrifying and exhilarating, often filled with moments of joy, uncertainty, and vulnerability.

But falling in love? That's a whole different story. It's like the world suddenly shifts into a whole new perspective. Colors are brighter, sounds are louder, and everything you didn't care about before suddenly becomes beautiful and captivating.

Your thoughts, your mind, your body - everything is consumed by the object of your affection. No amount of daydreaming or silly little creepy crawlers in your tummy could ever prepare you for finally being seen by them, for being loved by them.

It's tragic that not everyone has the luxury of falling in love for themselves. In many clans, people come together for the benefits of both parties. Love becomes an afterthought when situations arise, and it breaks your heart. It's almost like love becomes foreign to them, despite having found it on their own.

But to be forced into a relationship of convenience, not truly knowing the other person, is frightening and challenging. They're a stranger, and it feels so wrong to love them. It's like they weren't made for you, like Eywa didn't create them for you. And it hurts. It's a deep, stabbing pain in your chest that never truly goes away.

Why is it that anyone but you is allowed to love who they want?

The thought reverberates in your mind, a constant reminder of the burden you bear. Love, the very essence of Na’vi emotion, was supposed to be a choice, a right, not a privilege granted by duty. But there you are, trapped in a loveless relationship, forced into a union that you never wanted.

"It's your duty," they told you, as if that was supposed to make it easier. As if it was supposed to alleviate the guilt and the pain. "You will learn to love Neteyam, the chief of the Omaticaya Clan." It was always for the greater good, always about the needs of the clan. "This alliance will strengthen the Na'vi, it is the will of your father."

But what about your will? What about your heart? You didn't want to learn to love someone; it wasn't realistic, it was forced. The very idea of it was distressing, and it made you sick just thinking about it.

You knew, deep down, that it wasn't about how you felt, though.

It was clear as you saw your future mate leave your shared hut hurriedly, feeling the weight of the unspoken understanding between you. He was just as much a victim of this situation as you were, and it was obvious that love was an afterthought to him, just as it was to your people. You were just a means to an end, a pawn in a game that you never asked to play.

But you had to play along, no matter how unbearable it got. You sought him out against your better judgement, watching him like always from the distance at first. It was justified, your future mate was intimidating in both height and build. If he wanted to, he could break you easily, ridding you of existence due to your constant annoyance over the past few months.

When you finally work up the nerve, the training session have ended and you use that time approach him, fiddling with the small basket of Yovo fruits, “Ma Neteyam,” you called out to him, grabbing his attention immediately.

He tenses up, his face hardening as he motions with his head for the last young warrior to leave before giving his attention back to you, “Ma [Name], what are you doing here?” He asked, eyes flickering to the basket. His hands twitched by his side but remained there.

“I knew you would be training hard, Neteyam, so I thought I'd bring you a treat," you said, smiling up at him. You cringed inwardly at how needy you must look, reminding yourself why you had to get along with him.

Neteyam's lips formed a tight line, and his forehead creased as if he were pondering something difficult. Finally, he bowed his head to you. "That's kind of you," he said, his eyes drifting off to the side. "But I don't want any. Perhaps the trainees would?"

You could tell he was playing the nice card, as he always did. What he really meant was, "I don't want anything from you." Your ears flattened against your head in disappointment, and you lowered the basket.

"Of course," you said, trying to hide your disappointment. "What a great idea. Do you mind giving it to them then?" You raised the basket, suddenly feeling the weight of it more heavily than before, and offered it to him.

As Neteyam took the basket from you, you couldn't help but feel a small spark of hope. Maybe this time would be different. But as his fingers brushed yours, you felt him pull away as if your touch was toxic. His reaction stung, but you tried to hide it as he turned away from you.

"Of course," he muttered, barely looking at you.

You couldn't stand how he was treating you. It seemed like no matter how hard you tried, he was always shutting you out. You couldn't help but wonder if he was even trying to make this work.

You were caught between a rock and a hard place. On the one hand, you couldn't force him to love you, but on the other hand, you couldn't bear the thought of being alone if he doesn’t come around. The fact that this was all just for the benefit of your clans didn't make it any easier.

You tried to salvage the conversation, “Will I see you for dinner?” You tried again to make the effort, only to be shot down immediately, no hesitation whatsoever.

“I have patrols. Don’t wait up.” He left soon after, leaving you frustrated and hopeless. Nothing you ever do is reaching him, was he made out of actual rock?

It's annoying how one-sided everything feels.

You always initiate contact, never the other way around. You bring him gifts, participate in his customs and traditions, and cook for him, only to be met with silence or absence. And yet, you continue to do it all with a forced smile, hoping that one day he'll see your effort and reciprocate.

But the reality is, you don't know how much longer you can keep up this charade of a marriage. From the outside, it's a picture-perfect union, respected by all. But inside, you barely speak to each other and can't stand being in the same room together for more than a few minutes. It's like there's too much space, yet you feel suffocated at the same time.

You expressed how you felt later that day with Kiri, as you always do. She, along with her youngest brother, Lo’ak understood what it was like to feel different from her people—soon to be your people. So it felt right confiding in her, knowing she gets you when your future mate doesn’t make the effort to try.

Kiri sat next to you, intently fixing a necklace for one of the clanmates who had messed up. As she worked, she spoke softly, "That's unlike my brother, I don't understand why he's acting like this towards you." She gave you a sympathetic look before continuing, "I know it's frustrating, but give it some more time."

You couldn't help but let out a frustrated huff, crossing your arms tightly over your chest. "That's all I've been giving. When is enough time enough?" you asked, your voice tinged with annoyance. You knew you weren't exaggerating or imagining things.

Kiri paused her work, considering your words for a moment before offering a suggestion. "Perhaps you need to approach it differently. Focus on yourself, as he focuses on the village. Maybe then he'll realize that he should have been focused on you too."

You looked at her with surprise, not expecting such wise advice from her. As she placed the finished necklace on the low table, you smiled genuinely for once, feeling a glimmer of hope. This was the best advice she had ever given you, and you knew it was time to stop waiting for him to come to you and start putting your own feelings first.

After thanking Kiri and complimenting her handiwork, you left her hut feeling a sense of relief wash over you. The air felt fresher and lighter, as if the weight of your worries had been lifted off your shoulders.

From that moment on, you threw yourself back into your tsakarem training, determined to become a skilled and respected member of the Omaticaya clan. By immersing yourself in their culture and customs, you began to feel a deeper connection to both the people and the land.

This newfound sense of belonging also opened up new opportunities for you to assist with the day-to-day tasks of the tribe, and in return, they offered their guidance and support to help you adjust to your new way of life.

The perfect example would be currently, where you were in your hut crushing herbs that Tuk had brought you after hearing you asking about them. You were actually happy knowing Neteyam’s family were warming up to you. But Neteyam was still distant.

As you crushed the herb, you couldn't help but feel a pang of frustration and hurt. You had heard countless stories about the Omaticaya chief, Neteyam, and his unwavering loyalty and attentiveness to his people. Yet, when it came to you, his soon-to-be mate, he seemed to give you the cold shoulder.

You had tried to make him a priority in your life, but it seemed like he didn't feel the same way. Why did he get to act like he didn't want you while you had to pine after him? It didn't make sense to you, especially since you were in an arranged marriage for the sake of your clans' alliance.

As you were lost in thought, you were startled by the sound of your hut's entrance swooshing open. You looked up to see Aeknim, one of your close friends from your old home, smiling at you. "[Name], I was hoping you were here!" he exclaimed, taking a seat across the low table from you.

“Aeknim, what are you doing here?” You asked, curious about the goofy grin on his face. You haven’t seen him since you left, to come out of the blue must be important.

He chuckled, raising his head high, “I have found a worthy mate.” He proudly said, patting his chest with his right hand for a job well done.

You put down the pestle you were holding and clasped his hands in yours, "That's amazing news, my friend! Tell me all about her." As he shared the details of his new love, you couldn't help but feel happy for him.

Aeknim spent the afternoon telling you all about his new mate while you caught up on old times. You even forgot about your tsakarem training for the day, knowing that there were other healers in the village who could cover for you. One day wouldn’t hurt.

As night fell and it was time for Aeknim to depart, you walked him to the edge of the village to say goodbye. You ignored the curious glances from your fellow villagers as you hugged your friend tightly and bid him farewell, wishing him well on his journey and sending him off with some healing ointment in case he needed it.

When you approached your hut coming back, you noticed Neteyam standing in front of it, his expression inscrutable as he watched you approach with a predatory gaze. You tilted your head up to meet his eyes, wondering what had brought him here.

Without preamble, he demanded, "Who was that?"

Confused, you asked, "Who was who?"

Neteyam inhaled sharply through his nose, his jaw tensing as he closed his eyes briefly. When he opened them again, they blazed with an intensity that made you take a step back. "The man you were walking around the village with," he said, his voice deeper than usual as he stepped closer to you. He bent his head, allowing a few braids to fall into his face. "That's who I'm talking about."

You recoiled at the sudden change in Neteyam's demeanor. The tension emanating from him was uncomfortable and you couldn't maintain eye contact with him any longer. As you tried to process his words, you looked away.

Aeknim was the man he was referring to, but you couldn't fathom why Neteyam was so bothered by you walking with him. You decided to meet his intense gaze again, but his eyes, usually a bright yellow, were darker and it made you shudder.

"Yes, Aeknim came to visit me," you confirmed, hoping to dispel any misunderstandings.

"He came to see you?" he repeated, furrowing his brow in confusion. He leaned back slightly and asked, "Why did he come to see you?"

You paused for a moment, caught off guard by his sudden interest in your life. You couldn't recall a time when Neteyam cared about what you did or who you spent time with, and it annoyed you that he was being so attentive now.

"Why does that matter to you?" you asked, your tone defensive as you tried to keep the frustration out of your voice. You noticed his tail swishing behind him aggressively, and it only served to make you more uneasy.

Neteyam didn’t like what he was hearing. No, he didn’t like what he was seeing. His mate was defending another male, it made him sick inside and angry… the only male you should be protecting is him.

"You are my mate--" he began, but you cut him off, your ears flattening against your head at his words. You could feel your own anger rising, a fierce determination filling you.

"Yet, I am not your mate yet," you corrected him, standing your ground. You had done nothing wrong, so where was this interrogation coming from? It was almost as if he had lost his mind.

Eywa help him.

Neteyam shook his head, his braids swaying with the movement. "Now and then, you are my mate!" he spat, his face scrunched up in disgust. "Who visits my mate late into the night is my concern. You are my concern."

“You have an interesting way of showing concern for your mate, especially over the last few months,” you retorted, holding back a scoff as you watched confusion flash across Neteyam's face.

“Did you forget? Because I certainly haven't,” you continued, your expression softening slightly as you finally allowed your exhaustion to show.

It had been a constant struggle trying to reach him, and now is the time you choose to feel vulnerable, “You've been distant while I've been trying to connect with you. Not cold, necessarily, but you might as well have been with your absence.”

Neteyam's face softened as realization dawned on him as you continued, “I had to learn how to live here from people other than you. Your family has been around more than you have.” You finished, waiting for a response, but he simply stood there, eyes lowered towards the ground.

This time your scoff freely at him, honestly disappointed. You thought this conversation was getting somewhere, somehow to a point where you can come to some sort of agreement but there he goes again avoiding you.

Having enough of him, you brush pass him to enter the hut, “Of course, you have nothing to say.” You expected him to leave after that, like he does every morning to get away from you but he enters behind you, his expression morphed into determination.

“I have nothing to say,” he started, standing in the doorway, despite his expression, his body betrayed him as he’s slightly hunched over and his ears a deep purple, “because I don’t know how else to act with the one who I’ve already fallen in love with, but haven’t fallen for me yet.”

His words catch you off guard, and you turn to face him fully, shoulders losing its tenseness, “What?” You can’t believe he just said that. He loves you?

“I’ve noticed you more than you noticed me. I know that your actions mean nothing to you, while if I returned them, it would mean everything to me.” He started walking towards you, “I know your feelings you display towards me are not genuine. I know you don’t want to mate with me. I know and still can’t help but fall.” He stops a feet away from you, eyes trailing over your face.

“How can I do those things knowing what it means to me, that you don’t see me like I see you.” He finished, looking you in the eyes. There they were, bright yellow, nothing like the other harsh color. He looked as you expectedly, gentle, yearning and vulnerable.

Your throat tightened with emotion as you gazed up at him. His confession was a shock, but a welcome one. It was as though a veil had been lifted, and you saw him in a new light. Perhaps you had been blind to his feelings, too caught up in your own concerns. Perhaps you had been the one in the wrong all along, insensitive to his emotions, and acting selfishly.

Looking at Neteyam now, you saw a man baring his soul to you. He was hoping for your acceptance and understanding, acknowledging his mistakes and making an effort to set them right. You saw him in a new light: gentle, kind, compassionate, and fierce - just as all the stories said.

How could you have missed this before?

"I had no idea," you said, your voice quivering with emotion as tears welled up in your eyes. "I was so focused on my own desires that I neglected to ask about your true feelings."

Neteyam shook his head, "It was my fault for not showing you how I truly felt. If I had, we wouldn't be in this position now."

You chuckled softly, tilting your head down as you brushed a stray hair behind your ear. "You're right about that," you said, reaching out to take his hand in yours. Bringing it to your chest, you looked up at him with a shy smile. "But it doesn't matter. I see you, Neteyam. All of you."

Neteyam's eyes lit up, a goofy grin spreading across his face. He looked so handsome and carefree, and you couldn't help but think that this was what had been holding him back all this time.

"I see you too, [Name]. I always have," he said, pulling you close to him. Leaning down, he pressed his lips to yours in a long-awaited kiss.

Maybe you can learn to love him, wholeheartedly and authentically.

How did he even end up like this really.

Ezreal sits quietly in his dressing room. Leg shaking, fingers tapping the table, he’s jittery, anxious, so unlike him. So unlike the proud glimmering star that he knew he was. Like, he knows he looks great, his hair is styled now, he has all his makeup on making his already stunning features all the more enchanting. He’s properly styled in new branded clothes, all pinned to fit him perfectly, his waist and abs on show in the tight fitting top. He knew he looked fucking amazing but for some reason he just couldn’t help but to doubt himself. You were out there waiting after all. You were the one waiting for him to act all cute and charming. You were the one who knew how to make him look the best he ever has in almost every single photo. This was really so unlike him! Ezreal laughs at his insecurities, about to run his hands through his hair before realizing that the hairdresser was glaring at him. He holds back.

Instead, Ezreal sighs. Leaning back into the plush chair. The stylists fussing over him and holding up all these sponsored outfits for him, asking which he wants to wear next for the new magazine spread. Yet…all he can think about is how he would look in front of you. What would you like? Did you even like his type of cute and charming? What if you were more into people like Yone or Kayn. Ezreal pouts just thinking about it. It was unfair that you got to photograph them all, he just wishes he could keep you as his own personal photographer. So unfair that you got to look at all the other guys the same way you looked at him. But honestly, ask anyone of your friends and co-workers and they’ll tell Ezreal how special he was. How his fears were unfounded for he somehow was the perfect model for you. The way all of your best works and award winning shots were of Ezreal? How you stayed up editing multiple photos of his photoshoot photos, wanting him to look as stunning as possible. Everyone could tell you were a big fan, everyone except Ezreal himself.

So as he steps out and the studio lights hit him, the sparkle of his shimmery makeup making him look as ethereal as possible you can’t help but feel a flutter in your chest. Truly stunning, there was no other way to describe this idol other than that he was absolutely stunning.

“ Hey there. Uh yeah, let’s do this.”

Well that was awkward, he gives you a practiced wave and walks over to the set. Sitting with his legs crossed on the decorative throne. Head resting on his hands as he poses himself for you. You snap away, Ezreal fishing for praises from you, a bright smile on his face. Both of you doing your best to ignore the obvious blush on his face, it was just makeup right? Definitely just makeup.

The rest of the shoot went by smoothly. Honestly, being the one to get such up close and personal shots of Ezreal was…nice. After the makeup artist and stylists touch up his makeup, his eyes slowly make their way to you. He watches you fiddle with the camera while the other employees fuss over his hair and face. Taking in the sight of your serious expression as you pick the best shots. The way the corners of your lips curve up into a smile when you find good shots. Laughing softly to himself as he watches your nose crinkle when you scroll past a bad photo. Suddenly you look up and wave at him.

“ Hey Ez, which would be better? I’m not sure if the blue or yellow lights are the way to go for this one so I’m leaving it up to you.”

You call out to him during the break between set changes to take a look. Hand out to beckon him over.

“ Hmm? Can I See?”

Ezreal thanks the stylists working on him before he blinks over behind you. Carefully, he leans over your shoulder, hands reaching over to cover yours as he tilts the camera and the screen up towards him. A slight look of wonder on his face as he flips through the photos, amazed at how good you somehow make him look. Unedited photos and he already looks so good? Damn how did you give him such sex appeal while making him still look so cute. Gods bless you for being good at your job. Clicking left and right over and over before he finally decides on the one he wants.

“ Honestly the blue looks super good on my skin-”

As Ezreal turns to look at you with a smile on his face he pauses suddenly. Alarmingly aware of how his hands are on yours, how your face is a mere breath away, how your back was pressed against his chest, how your gorgeous sparkling eyes widen as you stare back, also suddenly shockingly aware of how close he is to you.

Ezreal swallows hard.

An awkward laugh leaving his lips as he blinks at you. If the two of you weren’t so caught up in the moment, you’d see the other staff members turning to look away, trying to give you two a semblance of privacy during this tender moment.

“ Sorry I didn’t-”

“ No don’t worry I don’t mind!”

After another moment of awkward silence, staring at each other, the two of your burst out laughing. Ezreal giving you a quick hug after he lets go of your hands. Friendly! Nothing too weird or out of character for him! Just Ezreal being Ezreal!

Only the pink dusting on both your cheeks hint at anything more between you two. But he was an idol and you were but his work colleague, a photographer. There can’t be anything between you two. You wave off the thought and thank him for his input as you pull the expensive camera close to your chest again.

“ I’ll uh, work on these and get them back to your manager tomorrow.”

“ Mmm, and thank you for your hard work as always. I look forward to the photos.”

Ezreal’s expression changes to a soft smile as he lovingly looks at you before he pauses and pulls out his phone. Doing his best to change the subject to relieve the awkward tension that now hung in the air around the studio.

“ Oh Yeah! I used our last shoot photo as my wallpaper! It was that good! I forgot to give you feedback on how much I liked it. Or maybe I did…hmm…”

He laughs, holding up his phone screen with a the solo shoot photos from a few weeks back. Trust this proud idol to use his own photos as his lock screen and home screen.

“ I am honored you like it that much then but yes, you blew up my messages with thanks when I sent it to you. Don’t worry, I know you love it.”

As you laugh in return, giving him a similarly warm smile from such close proximity, Ezreal feels his chest tighten. The furious beating of his heart was sure to give him a heart attack. A stupid love struck look on his face now.

“ I’ll go um, change for the next set. See you later.”

Before you can reply he blinks away back into his dressing room. The cycle of anxiety to repeat yet again. This was going to be a long shoot day…

Ghost!Johnny "Soap" MacTavish x fem!reader - Prologue

A little prologue, I guess? I do want to make this into a proper fic, just a bit busy now so I'm not sure how often I'll be able to write.

English isn't my first language and this is my first fic, so please bare with me!

Inspired by @ghouljams's ghost!Ghost fics!

(Yes I did write something for this previously on a different account but ended up deleting it for reasons)

Content warning: MW3 (2023) major spoilers, major character death right at the beginning, not edited because it's 1am and I'm feeling lazy but really want to post this, please let me know if I need to add more, I'm still new to this!

Soap x reader, this one is from Johnny's POV but the next part will be reader's POV.

It’s odd, really, how quick it all happened. From defusing a bomb to saving his captain to getting shot. He hadn’t even realized he was dead at first, although it should have been obvious in hindsight. No one could survive being shot in the head from point-blank range like that, not even an elite soldier.

Truly understanding what had happened took a while. Sure, he could see his own limp body on the ground as his teammates stood around him, when it was delicately put in a body bag and carried away, but it didn’t hit him until way later. It was more confusing than anything when he tried to tell them he was alright, that he was right there, and nobody would listen. Nobody would even look at him.

He watched as people came in and out of the tunnel for the next few days, doing their investigations and cleaning up the corpses and the blood, until everything went back to normal. Trains ran by as scheduled, workers hustling about.

Johnny was deep in denial for a long, long time. He can’t be dead, absolutely not. Look, he’s right here! Just- just look at him. Please look at him, say something to him. Why the fuck is everyone ignoring him?

No, actually, it’s just a bad dream. That’s what it is. He’s having a very vivid nightmare, one that feels like it just won’t end. But it will. Definitely. He’s going to wake up at base, or maybe back at his apartment in the city, and he’ll go to work and tell everyone about the weirdly realistic nightmare he just had, and they’ll all have a laugh about it.

But days turn into weeks, and he’s still there. It catches up slowly that this is no dream. He’s not going to simply wake up, not this time. He keeps going between absolute hopelessness and uncontainable rage. How could this happen? Sure he knew the risks of his job, that his life could end with little to no warning at any moment. Still, it’s almost impossible to actually comprehend once it has happened. What will his family think when they get the news? How will his poor mother handle it, if at all?

What about his team? They’re trained soldiers, best of the best. They’ve all lost friends, loved ones, teammates. They’ve seen it all before, surely this is no different. Just another Tuesday. No, they’re a family. At least in Johnny’s eyes. They must miss him, grief in their own ways.

And then there’s Makarov. Johnny can’t help but wonder where he is, what he’s doing. The 141 must still be on his tail, if they haven’t caught him already.

Johnny hopes they give him hell. For everything he’s done, and selfishly, Johnny hopes they make sure to avenge him while they’re at it.

Acceptance of this new reality comes agonizingly slow. Johnny tries to force it, tries to convince himself that it’s okay, it was bound to happen eventually. It just happened sooner than he had dared to hope. But that’s how it goes, people die, the world moves on.

He does eventually move around the underground tunnels. He could leave. At least he’s pretty sure he could if he tried, but he doesn’t want to. Maybe someday, but what good would it do now? Watching his loved ones grieve his passing, wondering how the hell they can go on. Johnny knows he was loved. He is loved. And he is full of love, even if he didn’t always show it in a traditional way. But the people around him definitely knew it, Johnny always made sure of it.

And now he’s alone.

He wanders the underground tunnels, watching the trains rush by. Makes sure to step aside when they do, still afraid of being hit. Refuses to even test it if he’d just pass right through them or other solid objects and surfaces (or maybe he does pass his hand or entire arm through some worker in a bright vest, just to see if he can. It’s not like the man will ever know anyway, despite the cold shiver that seems to go up his spine.)

Finding himself at a platform with people passing by at almost all hours of the day feels like a relief. Nobody will still acknowledge him, but the hustle and bustle fills his days with something, and that’s definitely better than nothing. It’s boring and mundane but feels less lonely. He watches as people rush to work, complain about the weather and how the train is late again, teenagers loitering around and kids playing at their parents’ feet as they wait. Occasionally he’ll see some dramatic show of goodbyes and breakups and arguments and heartbreaks of all kinds. He’ll see reunions, online friends meeting for the first time. Even watched some poor bloke propose to his girlfriend. She had awkwardly declined and quickly hopped on the next train, leaving her boyfriend on the platform. Johnny would have felt bad for the young man, if the couple hadn’t looked like they were on their first date.

He makes stories about people, especially ones who take this route often. Wondering where they’re coming from, where they’re going and why. What the lives of these seemingly regular civilians must be like. The single mom who gets on the train almost every day with two screaming toddlers in tow. The young man always smoking, ignoring the glares and the security telling him off. The old woman who comes by alone, often not even getting on a train and opting to sit near the stairs for a couple hours, a few days a week, just people watching. Just like Johnny, he supposes.

That’s how the first months go by. Johnny isn’t sure how long, there’s no point in keeping count of the days, weeks, months. He’s dead, what’s he going to do with that information? Well, he does keep some track of the days, reading headlines of newspapers and articles over people’s shoulders as they wait, just to keep some track of what’s going on in the world outside the tube network.

Yeah, it’s still boring as hell. Faces passing by, day by day.

Johnny is tempted to leave, or at least see if he can. There’s only so many things to see at a train station until it starts to numb his mind. He could probably see the world. Other than war zones and safehouses and such, that is. Do ghosts go on vacations? Can they go on vacations? Johnny doesn’t know much about what ghosts – at least he thinks he’s a ghost, or a spirit of some kind – like him are capable of. Too many movies and stories about the subject, all so similar but oh so different from one another. Guess there’s no better time than the present to find out, huh?

Those plans of leaving for good are quickly forgotten when something – someone – catches his eye one day. Not even sure why, he feels drawn to her, like a magnet. And after just a few days of seeing her almost daily as she gets on a train in the morning and returns later in the evening, it just doesn’t feel enough for poor lil’ Johnny. Whatever this is, he can't just let her be. Especially when, for a brief moment, he believes she looked at him. Actually looked straight at him.

Well, maybe he will try and leave this tunnel, after all.

Bar/Pub Owners!141, Los Vaqueros, König, and Kate Laswell Head Canon’s

Word Count: 943

Warnings: talk of drunk people, liquor, harassment is mentioned, blood is mentioned one time. I think that’s it, if not please let me know!

Notes:So I’m watching Drink Master’s on Netflix right now and all I can thing about bar/pub owners!141 with los vaqueros, Kate and König. I also keep imagining it to be like a high end type of bar (so expensive af) and they even have a kitchen but it’s limited menu.

More Notes: This is so random and I literally sat and wrote this down in a spur of the moment. Also haven’t posted anything in a bit and kinda feel bad about it but I promise I’m working on a request and the next part to Open Wounds (both the fluff part and the angst one). This is slightly edited but not really.

Gaz and Soap would 100% be bartending. They get the people relaxed and everyone feeling comfortable. Definitely a lot of laughter coming from the bar! They also have a wide range on non-alcoholic drinks to and are very adamant about no one feeling pressured to drink. Also, for the people that don’t know or just don’t have a lot of knowledge on drinks, they keep cute little menu’s that have descriptions of the drinks sat out in little baskets that anyone can grab form incase you are to nervous to ask about drinks! (This was totally König’s idea and no one can convince me otherwise. Oh! And Soap is the one that drew out the designs for them!)

Rudy and Alejandro do all the cooking (y’know they make some bomb ass food- don’t even try to lie) They go all out with presentation and flavors are always top notch. Difference between their food and other high end bars is they don’t serve plates of food that only the center of the plate has food on it, no their food covers the whole plate. So if you’re paying 40 dollars for one plate, it’s definitely worth it all the way.

Ghost and König are kinda like security but instead of making it obvious that they are security they try to just blend in with the crowd by sitting at a table with a drink or ordering from the bar. They do this because people tend to be more stupid when they think that there is no one watching them so it makes it easier for them to pin point who the idiots are pretty early. Definitely have kicked plenty of people out that get to handsy with people that don’t want that type of attention! They’ve had to call plenty of Ubers for people that were a little to drunk. So their job is really just to keep an eye on everyone to make sure everyone is okay!

Kate likes to go around and mingle with everyone so I feel like she would totally plan some themed events from time to time! Definitely makes friends (or just gets to know) with the regulars, probably does background checks on the people that linger around or people that give weird vibes. She is also all about safety for everyone so she does the best she can to take those steps like having the drink covers available at the bar where only open part of the cover is where the straw comes through, they definitely do the key word things like an angel shot or words that have different meaning on them, is very adamant about people not leaving alone or driving drunk so they are totally open to covering peoples Ubers as long as they are going home.

Price in my opinion would kinda be like the main guy over things (Kate would totally be half owner too btw) so generally he’ll be up in his office or making rounds talking to everyone to make sure everything is running smoothly. He would also try to get to know the regulars. Also, he’s definitely “went out for a cigar” and came back in with bloody knuckles after knocking some sense into a guy that was harassing a group of women (no one talk about it Soap just hands him some bandages from underneath the bar and Rudy gets him a random frozen bag of something from the freezer). If there is ever a group of women harassing a group of guys he gets Kate to deal with it if the women won’t listen to him.

Could also see Ghost filling in for either Gaz or Soap if they ever need to take a sick day or anything. He honestly makes amazing drinks just doesn’t prefer being center of attention like that and prefers being able to just observe everyone.

Any food that is left over from the night either gets distributed to everyone, given out for free, or it’ll get packed into to-go containers to be given out to the homeless… (I can totally see Rudy doing this. Man is such a sweetheart)

König has walked many people to their cars. Don’t ask I just know he does. Oh, he also had a girl ask him to do the thing where he pretends to be their boyfriend, man was so flustered but was so concerned about their safety that he pushed it aside and got the kicked out after. (They definitely did not go on a date after that 🤭)

For my GhostSoap people- Johnny 100% winks at Simon through the night and when everything’s closed down and their the last two there for the night Johnny and Simon will slow dance to whatever song is playing through the speakers.

Alejandro definitely gets distracted when taking people their food sometimes (bro is to busy flirting sometimes and taking compliments about the food) and Rudy will come out all exasperated giving him a pissed off look and will start to cuss him out in Spanish as their walking back into the kitchen 💀

Soap and Gaz will do competitions sometimes on who can make the most tips or who can make the better drink. Emphasis on the drink competitions- things will be slow as shit and they’ll randomly pull either a small group or a couple that is there and will offer them the drinks for free if they’ll just humor them. (Price gets so pissed about this sometimes because they’ll give out hundreds of dollars worth of drinks and liquor is not cheap… he’s not really mad though, he’s just happy everyone is having a good time.)

Makoto, Yang, and Yun with a himbo boyfriend!

Makoto

Makoto is already bold and straightforward, so it takes her a while to figure out that her boyfriend has a critical case of himbo. The only time she starts catching on to your condition is when she’s trying to flirt, but even then, she most likely blames herself, believing she’s not being more clear about her intentions (Which I guess in a sense is kinda true …).

Makoto doesn’t think you’re dumb at all. Anyone that thinks that better keep their mouth shut! If she hears even one ill word, she takes care of it herself! More times than not, Makoto has the offender by the ear, forcing them to apologize while her boyfriend stands clueless. You appreciate it though.

She admires your power greatly! And is super happy to have a sparring partner! Though she will notice if you lessen your blows with her! Come on. She can handle a punch or two! Give it your best shot - oh you don’t fight? … Would you like to? Makoto really wants you to learn how to fight if you don’t already know, at least let her teach you the basics! She just doesn’t want your strength to go to waste, that's all!

Yang

Yang knew you were a himbo almost immediately, his older brother being one himself. Not that he minds, his experience just means he is better suited to endure you. Though that’s not to say he is merciful, he’s a teasing machine once the situation is right.

He understands that you’re an adult and not fully gullible 100% of the time, so he has a very hands-off approach, not budging in with your affairs too often. He finds it amusing when you don’t catch on to someone's jokes right away, finding your realization. However, it's an entirely different story if someone tried to bad mouth you. If they assumed they’ll get away with it, they got another thing coming at them real quick.

Yang is a bit quiet with his affections, but I believe that his touches do show his appreciation towards your muscles and overall strength. When you two spar together some people (and perhaps even you!) will notice him being a bit touchy around your shoulders and back. When you two are relaxing Yang takes his place by your side, leaning against your shoulder as the two of you watch movies.

Yun

Yun is also a himbo (and y'all can fight me on this) and is in the same boat as you. More often than not did you do something that’s so obvious that you like him and yet, it flies past Yun like a bullet train. Yang finds amusement in this for a short while till it just gets sad and annoying. Yang sooner or later will just force you too to hang out till one of you breaks and admits you like each other.

Yun is a bit better at catching on when people are trying to be rude to him and/or his friend. He’s pissed when they talk about him but it's a whole other situation if they talk poorly about you. Once he catches the offender being a douche, toward his boyfriend?!? It’s game over buddy! It literally takes you and possibly Yang to get him off the poor dude.

Every day, without fail Yun asked his boyfriend to spar with him. It doesn’t even matter if you know how to fight or not, he still asks (and perhaps even offers to teach you a little bit). He just doesn’t see the point in not at least sparring if you're so strong! And no matter who wins, it will end with Yun gushing about you in some way. [Sorry I’m deviating here but I really like the idea of Yun hiding in his hat as his boyfriend picks him up ahbajkasw sorry carry on!]

Sorry if Yang and Yun are ooc! For some reason I struggled real hard figuring out how to write them

What ask in my inbox, I have no idea what you're talking about !! Aha !! Ahahahaa !! (i swear i'm getting to answering it i'm sorry for the wait) The last two on the list is Green Anime Baby (/ref) and Schrodinger's Sexuality, both of which you have already talked about before but this can serve as an opportunity to say whatever else is on your mind regarding them

The end of an era, really. The final two people.

Take your time on my ask! It's pretty hard to get so many thoughts on these characters in words, because there's a lot to them, so.

CW: Internalized homophobia, suicide and murder, cults and indoctrination, child abuse, heavy Amane apologism.

EDIT: On second read, I may have come off a bit strong with the Amane apologism. Keep in mind most of it’s hyperbole. I recognize her actions are morally grey, that’s the fun of it, but this isn’t a serious analysis. This is a collection of brainrot, and so I’m letting myself indulge in mindless Amane apologism, hope it’s not too much of a bother.

Let's start with Kazui. The (allegedly) gay (possibly) aromantic old man. Yeah, the aro/gay reading has grown on me since I made that Cat post. Though I'm biased towards the aro thing for obvious reasons.

Anyways, I like him! For the final time there is the issue of sexual attraction being a decently big part of someone's character, and me not really being able to relate to that, but at least this one has the whole thing about lying and societal expectations which makes it a bit more interesting for me. I personally have never had any big issues with my sexuality after I figured it out, but I can sympathize with his struggles to an extent. More than I can sympathize with Mahiru anyways.

I am always inclined to like characters who lie a lot, because it makes them more interesting to analyze. I tend to prefer when they aren't constantly telling everyone they're a liar, but Kazui isn't as annoying about it as some other characters (if I can like Kokichi I'll survive Kazui's thing). Kazui is cool because there's always the tiny doubt in my mind that maybe we're making a horrible horrible mistake by voting him inno this trial, but the more logical part of me knows that really isn't the case probably.

Shame his songs aren't really my kinda thing. I like Cat well enough, and I think half is good too, they're just not what I usually listen to.

I think it's funny his first instinct in his first VD was to try and apprehend Es, very funny guy. In particular, I think one of the most hilarious things that I've seen from Milgram so far is when someone before the release of Cat shipped him with the bartender just so Milgram could have a "Gay or European" parody, which is great, watch it if you haven't, and then it became canon (in theory).

As you know, I'm currently voting him Innocent, not just because of the whole "defending the others" thing, but because he clearly regrets what he did, he didn't mean to kill Hinako in the first place, so while what he did was pretty shitty, I don't think it's completely unforgivable.

I'm honestly coming up a bit blank on what to say about him other than the stuff I've sorta already talked about. I'll talk about the interrogations later, because right now I'm sorta distracted... by her.

I love her a lot a lot. To make it clear to you, I like her about as much, if not even more, than Min. Yeah, that's the critical levels of brainrot we're dealing with here.

She's just so fantastic honestly. Her entire story and personality and capital S Silliness is just fascinating, I could think and talk about her forever. It's hard for me to put into words, because I think about her and I start vibrating. Hands are shaking because Amane too awesome.

Amane is the reason why I even got into Milgram in the first place, you know? Like, I was seeing it pop up around my dash every now and then, but I was content to kinda ignore it... until I started seeing fanart of this weird little girl standing in an army of clones, and she looked a little... a little silly you know? I wanted to see what the deal was, and so I started obssessing over Milgram, so.

And what a time to join. Purge March may not be my favorite song musically (it's probably fifth after Backdraft, MeMe, Harrow and Bring it On. Magic is a bit below that but I also like that one), but it's probably overall my favorite MV of the series. Amane's an incredibly interesting character, the visuals are awesome, and lyrically it's amazing. Literally my only complaint is that it isn't longer, like please under three minutes? The shortest fucking MV in the series?! Evil /lh

One of my favorite Milgram lines in general is:

After you cry, repent, and kneel, it’s now your turn to say that hopeless “I’m sorry” You’re sorry? I don’t care! Please, go ahead and die already!

Just the almost jarring shift from "like our religion ordains, everything will be back to normal if you just apologize and repent :)" to "I don't care what you do, I hate you and I want you dead" is fuckaingadjk yes Amane go go go kill 'em! I don't care if you try to excuse your actions by twisting your cult's teachings so much you actually contradict them! That just makes it even better!

Yeah my sense of morality cannot properly process Amane's crimes as actually evil. Honestly she could kill the entire cast and I'd forgive her. Sounds like a skill issue on their part not gonna lie. Just let her stab Shidou, come on! Let her brainwash Fuuta! If she has DID, then let one of the alters not afflicted by Milgram rules stab Es! I think that'd be very funny.

Amane's just really awesome. I can't properly make a character analysis here because I will simply explode and I'd like to survive to see her third trial MV. I think I'll love it no matter what it is, but I do have some things I would particularly adore. Bassically I just want her to go feral, just- just go insane. My inner Veronika in full swing, I wanna see a play by play of her murder and just her covered in blood and screaming like yeah girl beat 'em up! I've seen some people suggest she should just turn into a monster in her MV and that would be so awesome. I am so immensely normal about her holy fuck do you understand.

Obviously I think she should be voted Innocent this trial. Because I'm pretty sure there's just no coming back from a second Guilty, so we're essentially dooming her and irreversably breaking her psyche. Shidou will probably survive any physical wounds she could possibly inflict, but I'm not entirely sure Amane would be able to recover after a Guilty. I also have a full draft talking about all the ways voting her Guilty just to protect Shidou could go wrong (Fuuta could attack in her place/there's a chance it wouldn't even stop Amane/Amane could sabotage medical equipment even while Guilty/Amane might still have the "first stage of physical restraints" from Trial 1 making a second Guilty redundant/DID could let her skip over the rules/etc). So overall I think Innocent is by far the better option, and I hope the way she's bleeding Inno percentage is some sort of statistical quirk and not her actually losing ground on absolute terms...

... But.

Listen, an inno is absolutely the best option in my mind. But if she gets voted Guilty, after I cry for a few months straight...

I am going to be so excited to see what she does in Trial 3. My inner Veronika coming out again, I wanna see how bad she gets. The more terrible and feral she becomes, I'll only love her more. I want to see all the horrible things she's willing to do and say without justification (/ref). God Kami-sama I need therapy.

Ehem. Anyways, I like Amane a lot.

And there's the dynamics, the dynamics! I've already brainrotted about her and Fuuta a bit on his post, but holy shit I love them so much. I want them to get out of Milgram and be silly together. They really are the siblings ever. Fuuta would introduce Amane to all sort of online and self-indulgent stuff she probably wouldn't have had access to before, helping her reconnect with her own desires and happiness, and Amane would try to get him to touch some grass and fail miserably. They are probably my favorite prisoner duo overall; they're both already silly on their own, and their silliness is multiplied exponentially when they are together.

Like, you gotta understand. It's not just that they are objectively hilarious together and they should hang out all the time always. There's also the parallels. Have you ever noticed how they both present themselves as heroes in their own ways (knight and magical girl)?

That they both want nothing more than to impress the very people who are pushing them to do bad things?

Listen, there's so much to talk about with these two. I've already said I'm a sucker for protag foils, and Amane may be the most direct foil Es has alongside Fuuta and possibly Kotoko. Not to even mention their sibling dynamic, too, only matched in awesomeness by 0308!

Actual sibling behavior what the hell. I think they should stick together if they get outta the hell prison.

Honestly it's ridiculous how awesome this girl is. I could talk about her and her parallels with all prisoners for days straight. I am not normal about her.

It's not even the prisoners either! Like, have you heard of the Sacred Texts, the godforsaken fucking cat parallels?! I'm going crazy just thinking about them. The only reason I haven't posted 15000 different posts about it is because Amane PhD haver Dr purgemarchlockdown has already talked about it so much. But they are so incredible. Animal cover goes hard, too. I have to listen to all of those at some point.

I will be so upset if she doesn't end up Innocent this trial (not as in mad, as in extremely depressed and a bit mad). I've even tried to cope by thinking of how it's mathematically possible she's actually been getting more Inno votes than Guilty but her percentage is dropping anyways due to statistical quirks and please tell me once the percentage stabilizes it will hover around like 53% give me some graphs I want to try to make some predictions please augh-

One day I'll start making posts about the prisoner pairs and this will come up in 0708 but I am currently unable to think more about Amane without imploding so.

K: Well, a decent amount. I'm sure you wouldn't know them because they're all old songs.

K: Because I don't have a job now, I'm letting myself act freely. I sleep whenever I get sleepy, and get up before noon.

I've always wondered about this one. Retirement for police officers in Japan is around 60 years usually, so there's gotta be some other reason my guy's unemployed. That's assuming he was a police officer, since I've seen some dispute the claim, but I think it makes sense. Did he quit after Hinako's death? Something happen before it? It's really peculiar, especially because we don't really get any reference to this in either half or Cat from what I can see.

A: My father. My father has been on a journey for a while, but that is something very honorable.

I've always wondered how the father thing plays into her story, there hasn't been too much reference to him yet. There is the second voice reveal trailer thing, but honestly I'm not too sure what to make of it honestly.

(T1) Q3: If you were allowed to do anything, what would you want to do?

A: Nothing really. I am not lacking anything.

This is honestly just a really funny answer. I get why she's saying it (common ethics and her own emotions are not as important as her cult's teachings in her eyes), but there's always a bit of hilarity that ensues when you say "ethics are trivial." Amane should honestly be allowed to violate Geneva conventions, I think the world would be better if she did.

(T1) Q9: Tell me what your family consists of.

A: It was my father, my mother, and I.

Was, huh. Wonder what happened there (murder happened there (allegedly)).

(T1) Q10: Is there any prisoner you're close with?

A: If I were to say, I guess it would be Yuno and Mahiru.

The part of me that loves body horror sorta wants Amane to be shown eating her victim in Trial 3 to really drive home how 'this is not what the cult wants her to do'. Is that not a normal thing to say? It makes me sound completely fucking unhinged? Oops. Anyways.

(T1) Q12: What is the meaning of life?

A: I think it is something you learn for the first time when you look behind yourself when it ends. I do not want to have regrets then, so I live on with all my might.

Sometimes (a lot of the time) I think about Amane when she grows up and hopefully is out of her cult's control, and how she'll feel about the first 12 years of her life. I hope she and Shidou make up.

(T1) Q14: Do you listen to music?

A: Not really, to songs that are highly entertaining.

I headcanon that if the prisoner's listened to each other's songs, Backdraft would be Amane's favorite because it's exciting and she likes Fuuta.

(T1) Q15: When do you wake up/go to bed?

A: I go to sleep at 9PM, and wake up at 6AM.

She sleeps for nine hours a night? This is the healthiest sleep schedule I've ever seen in my entire life the fuck is this. I get this is because of the cult thing, so I think my girl should get to do a sleep-over with some of the other prisoners eventually, but still.

How do you think Amane would react to Mikoto's tarot thing? I can't think of anything funny to say so I'm just not gonna address the question.

Translation begins: I’ve been feeling really awful since last night. I am writing this because I was just going to ignore it at first but felt I had to clear the misunderstanding. Please watch the video clip that is causing the problem.

Some people are saying that at the 4 minute mark Seungyeon is saying let’s got out, how unlucky, and how annoying and such. (In Korea, to say they are unlucky and how annoying in front of the senior is reallllly rude. Although, to say unlucky is the same [same words] in Korean, it’s the connotation and situation that matters and to say it in front of them in this situation would be like a total rudeness, including ‘how annoying’.) I’ve listened to it over and over but I don’t hear it. I don’t hear her saying ‘unlucky’ but I hear let’s go out and clean your face. And I can’t understand where you are hearing ‘how annoying’. I agree that KARA may have made a mistake on RS but the way people are accusing them as if Kara committed a murder or something is totally out of line. It is absolutely unbecoming. And they even issued an apology but you guys keep at it. They are sorry but I think the Elves with no right mind are much worse. I was not going to say this, but I’ve decided to write this after a much thought. I have an acquaintance who works as a staff on the show Radio Star. When I was talking to the staff, subject of Kara incident came up. Per the staff, this is not Kyuhyun’s fault and much of this incident’s fault lies with the show staffs. The staff stated, DSP refused many times when we were trying to get them on the show RS because they knew that the obvious dating issue of Hara would be brought up. However, RS promised that they would not bring up the dating rumors, and DSP said that they will have KARA on the show but you must promise not to bring up the dating issue. And during the pre-taping interviews, the Kara member insisted many times NOT to talk about the dating rumors. The staffs indicated that they understood but during the actual taping, they talked about the dating story/rumor for almost 40 minutes. The members just acted cool about it when it first came up, but the members became much more flustered and panicked when the dating rumor talks got more intense and pointed, and it lasted and lasted. Therefore, the emotions of all came at once and they started crying. And, Hara did not throw the water bottle but it was rolled. What Seungyeon said about ‘we hear the stories as well’ is NOT what that they hear stories of SuJu dating rumors at all, but that Kara members also hear the mean comments and dating rumor related stories about Hara. Furthermore, about Jiyoung, Jiyoung cried due to many other reasons. After sudden breakdown of Hara, it was an extremely awkward moment considering the atmosphere when they asked her to do Aegyo. Plus Jiyoung got flustered when they all of sudden asked her to do aegyo when they were talking Hara’s rumors. And, it seems to be edited out but Kim, Gura pressured Jiyoung with scary and harsher speech. Jiyoung got upset and emotional because she got flustered at the moment. It was first for her to see him act angry way (somewhat). But, most important thing is that after that incident, she apologize on the show and even after the show she apologized again to all the MC’s. I don’t understand why people are all after Jiyoung when she even apologized on the show. Furthermore, I was told by my staff friend that after the taping and once the show was broadcasted, one of the staffs of RS and Kyuhyun were exchanging some texts. That is, my friend’s colleague was sending texts to Kyuhyun and while exchanging some words, the issue of Kara’s attitude on the show.

Kyuhyun said that he watched the broadcast as well. He also felt that the viewers may have felt somewhat disappointed and annoyed; however, from his point of view, Kara is one of the most respecting and polite idols out there. And he also accepted the incident as a joke and all but he is feeling quite frustrated and concerned that the hoobaes that he cares about are getting this kind of hate for just one incident. He said that he felt multiple instances to write about (on SNS) how KARA girls are the most polite and nice girls but felt that that might cause more problems for the girls. So, he decided not to write it. The girls are so polite that they would bring drinks to their seniors in waiting rooms, concerned that they might be thirsty, so even all of SuJu members are flustered with this situation. Plus, on the day when this whole issue blew up, Sungyeon and Jiyoung called him again to apologize; however, when he sees this situation, he is quite worried that KARA might become afraid of variety shows in the future. *My acquaintance staff asked the other colleagues what did Seungyeon say when she was comforting Hara after she cried. They indicated Seungyoen said, “let’s go out, go clean up your face”. And she was going to turn around and ask the show staffs nearby to ask if it was okay to go to the restroom but one of the staffs brought some tissue papers. So, they didn’t go to the restroom. This is all I heard from the staff. I admit that KARA made some mistakes on the show. They will have to reflect on it. However, I think it is totally wrong to criticize the girls as if they committed a murder or something. People make mistakes. Idols are people so they also make mistakes. Didn’t Shindong even praise Jiyoung the last time? No, when you see how KARA treats their fans, they did not forget their early days. Why would an idol group that forgets their early days hand out a pack of Dunkin Donuts to each of several hundred people, buy ice cream, give lunch packs? It could be that their conditions were not the most optimal that day. But most of all, I don’t feel that they deserve to be getting so much hate like this when they all apologized toward the end of the show. As I stated above, Seungyeon apologized to Kyuhyun, and even Nicole and Gyuri took up responsibility and apologized as well. As a fan of Kara, I feel awful to be witnessing them this kind treatment as if they are impolite girls when they are the nicest ones. It is appreciative to point out someone’s mistake; however, if too much, it can become poison. If you all act so emotional wouldn’t the SuJu members feel worse when all of SuJu members think of Kara as very good hoobaes? Both Yoon, Jong-shin and Kim, Tae-hee PD said the taping was finished well. It is totally unnecessary to send this kind of overwhelming criticisms like this.

so like....we're all in agreement that Mayuri is a "just like what you're fighting" type character, right? Like I get loving him for being twisted and honestly open and obvious about it (unlike other villain characters and in particular some of the Quincy)... like on the one hand as a PERSON, I'm like "love to hate this character, kinda badass in a sick way". but yeah like. He's just as bad as the Quincy and I think it puts a lot of his actions in this arc into perspective in a really interesting way

Gigi singsonging while healing Bambi is really disturbing and I love this character archetype a lot so its nice to see it done well. Shes MEANT to disturb you

steady upward trend-ish

Dude’s symptoms improve by the day; he’s returned to work (remotely), though he is still in isolation on the porch.

I want to sit out there with him it’s the nicest part of the house. he was like “i know that’s why i was gonna stay in the living room, you should sit out here where it’s nice,” which, like, aw, that’s sweet, but bruh i fully do have to spend several hours a day in the kitchen doing all the cooking and washing-up, it’s not like I could sit out there that much anyway.

I have pulled up a chair outside so I keep going out there to sit and shoot the shit with him. That seems sensible. He’s still coughing a bit, so he figures he’ll wait another day or two, and then try taking a rapid test before he takes his mask off around me or like, goes to pick up takeout or anything.

I am working from home today and I’ve been at it for 5.5 hours so far and have transferred twelve ostensibly half-hour videos, and edited two of them. Yes! I realized I have Adobe Premier CS 5.5 on my old computer and guess what it can do, yes it can combine and trim and export .mp4 files, and that is all I need. So this old laptop may wind up with a new lease on life, actually. Not that I’m willing to donate it to work, hell no, but if it makes it so I can do all this work from home easily and not need to go in to work much at all, then I’m gonna do the shit out of that.

I have watched, by the way, two separate live births in these home movies, which like-- I super don’t get why people record that. But I hope this family is delighted to have that footage accessible to them again.

(The one was labeled that. “[Childname]’s Live Birth” as opposed to her egg-hatching? or being laid as an egg? IDK! This is a foreign culture to me.)

Hip is real bad lately so I’ve started riding my recumbent exercise bike. The batteries died in it so it lost the 500 miles I had on the odometer, so I’m starting fresh. I rode five miles on it the other day with no batteries in it, and those will forever not count, alas.... so, four miles down, 496 to go.... It seems to help; the muscles around the hip get painfully tight but 15 minutes on the bike loosens all that up and helps it sort of settle where it’s supposed to be. Yes I’m going to see a doctor soonish, but I know that the first thing they’ll say is “have you tried exercising” and the second will probably be “have you tried losing weight” and the third thing will be “let me know if it doesn’t get any better” after not giving me any more advice, this is my lifelong experience with doctors who won’t attempt to address a condition until the second time you complain about it, so I do want to turn up with 1) this is the problem, 2) these are the times it happens, 3) these are the solutions I have already tried. It’s worth a shot!

(For the record, the single worst thing I can do to my hip is sleep on either side, my front, or my back. The second-worst thing I can do is certain solo adult activities, which are now Illegal; who knew a hip joint could be a prude! Partnered is fine for some reason though, which is.... weird, but for obvious reasons that is currently Not Available to me. Alas.)

I’ve also been doing a bit of sewing. Now that I can edit videos it’s not quite the end of the world if I leave the room and come back and the half-hour tape ended at 21 minutes. I can just trim the deadspace off! (less than 5 minutes I won’t bother fixing but more than that, I figure a customer deserves not to have that to deal with.) So I set a timer and vanish to the basement for 15 minutes, and then I come back up and work on hand-sewing at the table for the last 10 minutes of the tape. I’ve cut out the pieces for one of those boyfriend pillows, and I’m assembling a dress i cut out ages ago. The fact that I can see and smell the outdoors and the weather has been lovely is making this also much more pleasant. And since I’m tied to the kitchen so much, I’ve been keeping up on dishes and cooking a lot. Which is awesome!

The downside is that it’s very easy and addictive to hyperfocus on the next video, the next video, the next video, so I worked 12 hours yesterday and will probably do the same today. It’s fine, I know my boss would be pissed to pay overtime, so I’m just going to take a bunch of this week’s hours and report them for next week, which is awesome. (Am I going to make it so I work 6 hours or less every day so they don’t deduct the half-hour lunch breaks they don’t pay me for that I never take? Maybe. Well I’m not taking the breaks, I’m chained to my watch and I’ve had multiple meals go cold because they were ready but I had to change out the tape.)

Anyway-- today I did take a break, actually, and I spent it sitting in the drive-thru pharmacy line at Rite Aid, to get a proper PCR test. I want negative results before chicken day on Tuesday, so I can be positive I won’t expose anyone. The rapid tests have all been negative but I have multiple friends who’ve tested negative on those but still been contagious, which is what I’m worried about-- I will trust a negative rapid test for Dude because he’s had one come out positive, but I feel like some people just for whatever reason don’t hold the virus in the right place for the rapid test, or just don’t-- vibe with it or whatever. IDK, I’m no scientist, I just know I wanted a Real Test for the chicken crew.

Yes yes I’ve also been writing but that has been sort of scattered. I should have a chapter update for tomorrow though.

mystery horror theater bre-thousand 1

because if i go on another movie binge without filling this out first i'll have defeated my own purpose

THE OTHER DAY i watched three filmmmsssssss if you can call it that -- Smile (2022), Day of the Reaper (1984), and Savage Weekend (1978). this is my first time doing this under a name and i guess i should give them number ratings but what i may rank very high might get me slaughtered on sight, you'll see what i mean

SMILE (2022) (TW: Suicide, self-harm, THE CAT DOES NOT MAKE IT)

At the behest of a friend, I jumped in to watch this movie -- I enjoy doing that, very little fucks me up and I like keeping an eye out for people horror-wise. Overall? It was incredibly good. It had the tense anxiety of Invisible Man (2020), where there's a lot of focus on the mental deterioration of a woman in a world that doesn't believe her, surrounded in a blanket of the first scene of Midsommar (2019) where it shows a pretty ugly side of certain traits of mental illnesses such as mania and psychosis. And it should, the main character works in a psychiatric emergency hospital, and does so to the point of detriment that I would call self-harm. I've been there, working so hard you wreck yourself, y'know?

By about halfway through it became obvious that was also a monster movie, and while I can see some people turning their nose at that, I think I really needed that aspect to follow through with the movie without feeling beaten down with misery and anxiety. The monster in question operates similarly to It Follows (2014) but instead of being passed on by sex it's passed on through sharing the trauma of witnessing a suicide. The monster itself reminded me a lot of BOB from Twin Peaks, there is a beautiful scene recreating BOB scaling the couch while smiling. It's then that I realized that the first person to die was named Laura. Yeah I see you...I see you...!!!

The theme in the movie is the chain of trauma passed from person to person and viscerally affecting those already with past traumas. I deeply enjoyed its execution and how this was a monster movie...I do wish, however, it ended a little bit differently. While the message that trauma never truly leaves you is there, I was hoping for a different, bittersweet ending instead of the bad end the movie provided. It felt tacked on or changed at the last minute. 4.5/5

DAY OF THE REAPER (1984)

buddy oh man oh MAN BUDDY IF YOU LOVE REALLY SHITTY INDIE HOME FILMS SHOT ON A SHODDY SUPER 8 CAMERA WITH THE WORST ADR DUBBING YOU'VE EVER HEARD IN YOUR LIFE, with every treat a bad movie has to offer, THIS IS YOUR FILM and you can watch it FOR FREE on YouTube RIGHT NOW and then come back and punch me in the face. I was HOWLING with laughter. I got a friend also enthusiastic about bad movies to watch it and HE loved it TOO. i have to gather more people to watch this gem, and if you stick with it and think it's boring keep going because the conclusion is so wildly out of this world and so strangely done that it'll hopefully bring glee and joy to you too. CLEAR AND AWAY 5/5

SAVAGE WEEKEND (1978)

I was running out of steam by this point because laughing at Day of the Reaper put my lungs in a state, but this is a slasher from the years in between Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th. I've seen many many slashers that follow the tropes of horny teens boning it in woods (but strangely a white girl usually dies first! I donno where the Black guy trope comes from--but then they're rarely in these films ANYWAY so whatever). But here, it's a bunch of really messy adults with crossed desires, separation/divorcees not knowing what they want out of love at this point, horny adult looking for any tail they can get, et cetera. It honestly was a refreshing break from all of the giggly teen stuff--I'd be far and away more interested to see more like this in the future.

The editing was cut really quick in a lot of areas and the film's pacing at times makes it feel like a rushed project, it needed a finer tooth comb on both fronts. The quality wasn't great but I was pleased to see a flamboyantly charming Christopher Allport give the nasty queer bitch role his all. The twist was pretty meh, I wish there was more fallout action between Mac and the divorcee (just get nasty with it! it's the 70's let's go!) I might be interested to see this again but probably not, it gets this score just for the novelty of horny adults with horny adult problems in a slasher film: 3/5

Crosshair started out with a ‘horn’ on his shoulder armor, Din gained a picture of one on his as the show progressed (opposite shoulders). The other shoulder (on both men) just has a central stripe

They both have a BIG ‘brother’. I mean, Paz is literally Wrecker, only in blue. He even does Wrecker’s signature pose when Bo’s Mandos come and meet the others and he faces Axe for the first time

We see Din napping while his ship is in flight, Crosshair did that too in the story reels (which were then removed from the final edit)

Both of them have worked with a crew consisting of the strong one, the girl who fawned all over him, the man she was prepared to do anything for, and the droid

They both chose not to kill a target when they could easily have done, and it would have made their life much simpler

They both got locked up in a jail cell even though they’d done nothing wrong

They’ve both risked their own safety to keep their respective droid friend safe and in one piece despite their individual solid reasons for not having any base trust in droids

They’ve both been programmed to behave in a certain way by the woman who holds power over them

They’ve both worked with a clone outsider to complete a mission

Crosshair didn’t get to go to Pabu, the peaceful and tranquil tropical island where everything appears to be natural and open, and the people all work together to create their idyllic life there. But Din did get to go to the high-tech, completely enclosed, Alice in Wonderland themed, complete and total opposite of Pabu

They’ve both done some seriously dodgy shit for money. They’ve been careful not to let us see how much of a problem Crosshair had with that because we only see his story just before they team are separated, but we’ve seen that Din has been willing to take any job, anywhere, any time.

That barely mentioned (so far) sub-plot about Nanodroids

They’ve both had their Darth Maul reference moment

Both of them have a dodgy friend with black market contacts

They both put a lot of effort into lugging a suit of armour back to where it came from, admittedly only one of those had a person in it at the time

They both lost their ship that was also their home and their only means of independent travel

Crosshair shot his asshole CO, where Din only watched while Mayfield shot his

Both children they’re directly connected to had to be rescued from the water either by or for them

Din has chosen to adopt the child placed in his care, Crosshair doesn’t want anything to do with the child his team picked up. Even though they share a running ball theme, even if one show is far less obvious about it

Crosshair knows as much about the Jedi as Din doesn’t

Din sustained a severe head injury which necessitated his helmet being removed by someone else in order to provide treatment, Crosshair’s helmet was removed by blast force allowing him to receive his severe head injury, in addition to other injuries

IG-11 sacrificed himself to protect his team, Din and Grogu. Tech sacrificed himself to protect his team even though that didn’t include Crosshair at the time

They both know one good Captain who’s prepared to stand up for what he believes in, to trust in him after seeing the sort of man he is through his choices and his actions

Fun fact i spent the last six months editing videos, some of them in 4k, for a video studio. I'm also a visual arts bachelor, w/ a technical specialization in theater sfx and illumination. Thinking about this, I have realized I can hate more efficiently. I'm being a bad hater by complaining vaguely.

So here's a lenghthy techinal infodump of why I hate how a lot of newer shows from the global north are shot & edited (sponsored by autism)

1. Never resting the camera

Why is the camera always moving? Well, in the age of 200 thousand types of information per second, they need to fight for your attention, right? By making the camera always move, esp in scenes like a dinner where the characters are mostly quiet, they trigger that part of our monkey brain that sees movement and pays attention to it. Sounds logical? If you're shooting a commercial, maybe.

The camera is a key part of visual storytelling, the camera is the POV- seems obvious, but that means that it needs to be coherent with the narrative. They're feeling, or actively being, watched? Camera from a distance, framing them through a hole, ruins, books, or whatever would be in front of a hiding spot for a creep, slight motion since the POV here could be a living thing and our necks arent 100% stiff; They're on a boat? The camera sways, like you're also at sea; Earthquake? The camera shakes considerably; Ship being hit/crash? The camera moves, shakes and/or tilts, taking in consideration the momentum of said crash. I could keep going.

So, what does it tell us when the camera is always doing that "drone over city" slooow panorama across the room, as a replacement for a still framing of the characters? It tells us that this is not a scene where people are "at rest". And it can be used like that in a good way- anime does this a lot, successfully.

When I say "at rest", I don't mean how the characters feel, I mean how the audience feels. If we are seeing a man in his own house, doing his usual routine, even if his mind is in a million places, we can't always be getting the panoramic view. We need him framed still, at least enough time of it so we know that this is a "rest" moment. Later, in contrast to this, "action" moments will hit better.

Something that goes "still camera > a swaying camera > a shaking camera > still cam > panoramic view > shaking cam > swaying cam > still cam"? That's a narrative. And I didnt yet add actors' performances to it, or even a story.

So yeah. Let us take a breath. It's not a fight against the attention span, the challenge is to convince people that it's better to watch a still frame of your character looking into the distance with little to no movement, than to do anything else. Move the camera when it needs to move, rest it when it needs to rest, and you're one step closer to that.

2. Relying too much on after-shooting corrections

This one is split into three categories so I can better flesh out why it's bad

2.1 CGI over props/makeup

Notorious complaint for sci-fi/fantasy/horror fans is how the CGI looks soulless, or just plain stupid. Visual fx makeup artists are unionized, the underpaid guy doing the CGI animations isn't. Also, it costs a lot less than physically making your props/sets. As long as you can keep quality and appeal for less money spent, there is nothing wrong with this. But they won't stop there. They do sacrifice quality to cut costs. And the end result is just what you would expect: it looks uncanny and artificial.

2.2 Luts

A lut is like a little pre-set of light edition you do when editing high-def videos. A lot of high definition cameras will record with less saturation and contrast in order to get small details that would be missed otherwise; the edition team will flesh out those colors, and save the scene's lut in order to re-apply it when necessary. This in and on itself is not a problem, the problem is when they reutilize luts without thinking if that color set really works for this shot, or even for the show's story and desired tone. This results in that washed out/sanitized look, or in a gritty, instagram filter from 2015 look - dark bits too dark or not dark enough, colorful bits inconsistent with the scene's emotional tone, too much or too little saturation, etc etc.

Part of the reason you can't see shit in dark scenes is that it was not properly edited, another part is because it was not shot thinking it should be visible at all before someone edits it.

2.3 Chroma keys (aka the infamous green screen)

Illumination suffers, suspension of disbelief suffers, the actors' performances suffer. Like everything here, this is a misused resource, not a demon to be burnt. But a chroma key needs to be veeeery carefully used, when all other options are either not possible phisically, or don't feel more adequate from a composition POV.

When chroma keying, you need to have in mind that the illumination of what you're relaying to it will not be the same as the set's, for a start. You also need to think of proportion, and of how you will blend the set lighting into it when editing. Adding one thousand filters/luts and making the whole thing seem artificial is one way to go about it. Disney m4rv3l is a big fan of this one.

3. "Tell, don't show", or neither.

When the dialogue is not nearly enough spaced out for the audience to process both the visuals, and what's being said, they need to chew it real tiny and spit it into your mouth. No time for nuance if you want your show to be binge-watched the night it was released. This doesnt mean everything will be literally verbalized, but scenes that could be subtle, i.e. a character picking up a hand gesture from another, will not be shown in a wider frame of the character, but directly focused on (with a shaky/swaying camera, more often than not....). Of course, these are choices. If it best fits to be real obvious about it as a pivotal point of narrative, do it. But is it, really?

Sometimes, it will also be literally said out loud, redundantly. A person who has just watched 10 hours straight of TV can't really be trusted to pick up on nuance, even if, when compared to a weekly release, they will have a fresher memory of what was said/done 8-9 hours ago.

So, gotta make sure everything is stated loud and clear. Or they think they gotta. I, personally, do not consider this to be a good creative choice.

Obviously, a lot of stuff is guilty of the opposite, sometimes at the same time: they don't care for consistency and will give you nothing substantial to tie in the story lines. No time for that, onto the next action-packed scene. Look at the sparks and lens flares and indistinguishable figures fighting in the dark as you squint. Here's a strong quote. Here's some more action. Here's some propaganda. We don't have to say anything about this because everyone gets the reference (nobody in the global south, or even another generation/demography, quickly gets or cares about the reference.)

4. Choosing to avoid bright colors, or always muting the pallette to look "mature".

There seems to be a huge fear of looking like your colors are too much, so they go for the "adults don't like colors" mindset. Cold, blue-ish tints on top of whites and greys and browns, or just that brown-ish filter most live actions from cartoons use to look "grown up". The problem is that this cold-ish, sanitized look, takes us to "this feels like a hospital, and with the amount of white walls and un-saturated costumes, it might as well be." - great for something like House MD, horrible for something like Star Trek, appalling for something like a coming-of-age, upbeat show. The brown-ish one is great for a lot of horror/psychological scenes, but never a good look for a whole thing.

Contrast is key- if everything feels the same all the time, it feels like nothing. If all scenes have a sad, anxious, "grown up zone no fun allowed" feel, your sad scenes don't hit like they should, and neither do the happy scenes. A show is a coming together of many takes and angles, and while having a signature look can be very good, having a generic, washed out look that everyone and their mothers are doing... is bad.

5. Light, shadow and color are too separated from the "shapes and lines" category when thinking of a composition.

I have talked about illumination a little up there, but now I'll talk about it a lot. Basically, when you do the lighting for a scene, "we can see them" is not the only end goal. The way we can see them matters, and what we can't see matters a lot too. How does the light hit this face? Which shapes does it create? Which mood? Where have I seen lights and shadows like this in real life? Do I go for the fantastical, dramatic etc, and leave realism aside for now, or is this a sober lighting moment? Why is it dark, where is it dark? Why is it light, where is it light?

It doesnt seem to matter. The goal seems to be "you can see this is a person" "you can see it's dark". It doesnt matter if the shadows on a character's face dont look appealing, or if they are unflattering to the actor, if it hits lipstick in a weird glossy way it shouldnt. Its a person doing something, you can get that? Good enough.

When thinking up a composition, you think of shapes and lines- where to put the actor so its balanced, which angle to frame from, where do the lines converge, where do they grow apart, what shapes does it make, what ratios does it make, which funitures to move around. But I can have a masterpiece of shapes and lines, if I shine bad lighting into it, I will have destroyed it- new shapes and lines are born from the edges, or the fades, where light meets dark. And the more I watch more recent shows, especially sci-fi/fantasy/thriller/superhero shows, the more I think at some point "shape/line" and "light/color/shadow" got divorced in this niche of US/US inspired TV, pairing up now only for the occasional exception. This is, also, another reason why you can't see shit in dark scenes- the shapes don't make sense, and to make it all worse, they are moving. Always moving.

a few days late because my job is kicking my ass lately, but i've got another batch of little reviews of stuff i've been checking out. take a look!

Doctor Who: The Fifth Doctor (Seasons 19-21)

it only took 20 years but this show is truly getting good i think. you can start to see where the DNA of the reboot comes from, especially how davison's performance would influence tennant's - and what a sendoff he got in the end, some really wild shit happening there. not much more to go now

Faraway Downs

a lot more digestible than the movie it was edited from, and makes me ponder if it shouldn't have just been this way from the start. the changed ending feels more in line with the rest of baz's ouvre, given his penchant for tragic deaths - but i'm not sure it's a better ending for this in particular. otherwise, everything from the movie applies, good and bad

Checkmate - Malorie Blackman

a strong conclusion to this first trilogy, about healing from the scars of your past and focusing on the ones who are here now. some elements feel all too real to this day, and it's heartbreaking. believe in something better

Puella Magi Oriko☆Magica: Extra Story - Magica Quartet, Mura Kuroe

Iron Man 3

james bond by way of marvel while grappling with tony's actual damage instead of just libertarian-ing all over the place. disappointing that they did "What If Iron Man But Evil" yet a fucking gain but once i get past my annoyance at that, they do make it kind of work, and tony getting down in the dirt and getting to know actual regular people was really fun. good start, phase 2. try and keep it up please

Ben 10 Versus the Universe: The Movie

this was distinctly pretty okay, definitely far more enjoyable than the nonsense that the live action movies are, and there was some poignancy to it all - gwen and max thinking ben might be dead, ben having similar worries on his end, azmuth's test pushing him to be better than he can be. it may be a bit rote hero's journey stuff, but ben 10 has always been extremely by the numbers - it's no different here. my main gripe is that for being a movie, they really don't push the animation much. this genuinely looks like it could've been split into a 5-6 parter to cap off the last season of the show and there would be no obvious difference, and for all i know it probably is aired this way when the show is in syndication.

The Wolverine

watched the extended edition. man i just zoned the fuck out of this one. some nicely shot action at least but i just didn't have the mental energy to follow the plot and the silver samurai stuff was dummmbbb. very unmemorable

The Mandalorian (Season 3)

the narrative arc must sacrifice all for The Lore. all subservient, all reverent of The Lore. mandalore is back. don't you feel proud? don't you feel serviced? don't you feel clever, for knowing all these things about our brand? we took the narrative arc of our main characters and shot it behind the shed so they could stand around while bo katan, our hidden true protagonist of this season, does all of the actually important stuff, but that's okay, right? you feel good, because you know who bo katan is, and why she's important, and why the darksaber is important, and why its so so sad that moff gideon destroyed this trinket from another series made 15 years ago. look, here's jack black, and lizzo, and christopher lloyd. isn't it fun that they're now part of the Star Wars brand? isn't it great? din and grogu have a house now, all to themselves. that works as an ending, right? this is what you want, right? this is what makes you happy. this is what you crave, fans. The Story is dead. long live The Lore.

honestly really not that bad if you take it for what it is rather than being mad that it's not alien force Like Some People. fun redesigns, some decent comedic writing and mixed additions to the rogue's gallery (extreme pass on breaker 1-9 and nanny nightmare, but xingo, the bugg brothers and tim buktu are fun). don't go in demanding deepness or tight canon or worldbuilding (factors ben 10 as a franchise has never actually been all that good at if we're really being honest) and you can have a fun time

Thor: The Dark World

it should be a crime to misuse christopher eccleston this badly

Mario Kart 7

this must have seemed like a shock to the devs of mkwii but it turns out when you don't entirely fucking explode the player for the crime of existing near first place, the game is actually fun and enjoyable, and i want to play more of it

Star Wars: Visions (Season 2)

not as good as the first season IMO, but still some fantastic and beautiful animation from around the world. the aardman short got me good. i saw you grand day out robot

Nichijou: Original Run (Vol. 1-10)

works just as good in manga format as the anime did, although it doesn't have quite as good an ending. keiichi arawi has an impeccable sense of timing that shines even in manga format, and their ability to take comedy to great extremes in their art is hilarious

Assassin's Creed: Odyssey - The Fate of Atlantis

well that was a load of nonsense. AC's take on greek mythology was admittedly pretty cool to see but it was just a lot of meandering in the end. a surface level tour with some juno teasing at the end which i'm pretty sick of tbh

AD:PIANO VIVACE 2 - Diverse System

pretty good but not stellar. little really stuck out to me as truly awesome, even BlackY's track was kind of a let down. still, nothing actively bad here.

best track: "Flows With Errors"

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

it feels wild that thus far captain america consistently outdoes every other MCU movie. i didn't think i'd be this on board with him when i decided to start catching up. a great spy thriller that managed to contain a ton of engaging plot threads without feeling overstuffed and overlong, and genuinely left me pretty excited for more

The Brawler (2019)

While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...

I have an idea. I’m going to tell you about 2019's The Brawler and you can tell me who you think it’s for. There is an audience for this movie but it's incredibly narrow, and not the one the filmmakers hoped for.

Based on the true story, Chuck Wepner (Zach McGowan) is a small-time boxer who gets the opportunity of a lifetime when Muhammad Ali (Jerrod Page) challenges him for the heavyweight championship title. His story makes him a celebrity among the locals and catches the eye of Sylvester Stallone (Anthony Mangano), who thinks it would make a great film. Unfortunately, his newfound stardom plunges Chuck into a downward spiral of substance abuse and poor decisions.

If you like the Rocky franchise and hope to get “a little more” by watching the story that inspired it, this film will disappoint you. At first, "The Brawler" follows the 1976 Oscar-winner nearly beat-for-beat with a few key differences. Firstly, Chuck is already married to Phyllis (Taryn Manning). Secondly, his rough-around-the-edges manager (Joe Pantoliano) isn’t all that lovable and has no memorable lines. Third and most importantly, our protagonist is 0% likeable. You have to admire the film for showing a “warts and all” portrait of the real-life boxer but if you’re going to show the man’s flaws and your objective isn’t to assassinate his character… try to show some good facets of his personality. Sloppy, dumb, unfaithful, apparently eager to abandon his three children (I think there were three, they get so little screen time I can’t be sure) and always insistent that none of what happens to him is his fault, you don’t cheer for Chuck. Ever.

The film is fundamentally flawed in that it keeps reminding you, over and over, of two movies you’d rather be watching: Rocky and Rocky II. In fact, Chuck receives a role in Rocky II from what is undoubtedly the worst Stallone lookalike you’ve ever seen. Director Ken Kushner does his best - for a while - by shooting Anthony Mangano (at least 30 pounds too heavy and way too old for the part) from a distance, in a hoodie, with sunglasses or with all three but eventually, the “real” Rocky and the movie Rocky come face-to-face and you’ll be embarrassed for everyone involved. Their Mohammad Ali wasn’t very good. James Diian Bonavia as André the Giant was worse but by comparison, they're mirror images.

So is the film for boxing fans who have never seen Rocky? Maybe, as long as they can tolerate poorly choreographed and poorly shot fight scenes. The camera twists and twirls so much it could make anyone look like a prized fighter. Even with these tricks, it’s obvious the punches are not connecting with any force.

For drama fans, then? ‘Fraid not. At 95 minutes, there’s too much material covered for anything to have any emotional resonance. There is no through line, no lesson for Chuck to learn and no character arcs. It’s simply a checklist of events until the film ends. The conclusion is supposed to leave you feeling good but there’s no way you will because it’s unearned. That’s how bad this film is; even if you separate yourself emotionally from the movies it reminds you of, you dislike Chuck so much you don’t want him to win in the end.

No one wants to see a movie about a screw-up that’s not self-aware. They certainly don’t want to see one that's badly shot & edited, with lousy performances and a sloppy story. So who is The Brawler for? People who like comparing good and bad movies. Here’s what you do. Week 1, you watch Rocky and the Here Comes the Boom. Now you see how a boxing underdog story can be done well, and not-so-well. Week 2, Rocky II and then The Brawler. Now you've seen how to follow up one of the greatest sports movies of all time with a solid sequel and how you REALLY shouldn’t tell a boxing story. (June 19, 2020)

(we are) the fault line by iguessyouregonnamissthepantyraid 👻 - Slow burn found family with Vlad regretting past decisions and getting more depth than just “mwahaha I’m going to turn you into the perfect son!!!!” Also Danny speaks in like, two chapters toward the end, and I think that’s quite a bold move to have the quip-dealer so quiet.

Shivers by JadeNoRyuu 👻 - There’s follow-ups, but the main story is really interesting. I also don’t know if the writer’s first language is English, but that makes it even more commendable.

Epiphany by TorScrawls 👻 - Maddie and Jack get character development, and that makes Danny panic lol. There are separate epilogues.

Broken Ectoplasm by ghostanimal 👻 - Very nice story, more Parental Angst, and Danny is incapable of speech for almost all of it. Jack realizes how much of an ass Vlad is without Vlad knowing.

Bitter by thatgirl_youknowtheone ❌ - Vlad fucking poisons Jack at the man’s own b-day party. Jack does not realize he is dead, angst ensues when Danny tells him.

Temper Tantrums by attu 👻 - Lore for my girl Dorathea! Also Danny gets to be a dragon!

Mortified by Marsalias 👻 - Honestly if you haven’t read some of this one yet, go. Read it. Worldbuilding out the ass in this one. Edit: Now complete! Chapter count is over 300 but they’re relatively short.

Icebound by Pandemi 👻 - Very neat Justice League fic, I love the premise of Flash fighting… well, just read it.

The Ghost of Heroes by Enigmaris 👻 - MCU crossover. This is in the same vein as Mortified for me. If you haven’t read it, GO READ IT.

Whirlwind, Reflections, and Mirrored by Lynse 👻👻👻 - All involve different parts of the Secret Trio (Danny Phantom, Jake Long, and Randy Cunningham), but Whirlwind throws Chat Noir in there for spice.
