How do you go about picking a new name for yourself? I've never really felt one way or another about my given name.... I just don't feel connected to it much is all. I don't hate it though, either. Like the rest of me it's just kinda There.
I'm thinking short, still. And definitely more gender neutral? Just don't know what.
I don't plan on changing my name -- not officially. I'm just getting ready to apply for graduate school in Sept and was contemplating adding a 'preferred' name to my applications. All the schools are out of state so I'd be getting a completely fresh start. What better way to test out a new name?

I have a 16 almost 17 year old who wants to start dressing goth/punk, and I'm all for it, I just don't...know...how...to help? I'm not a fashion person, my fashion is funny tee shirts and jeans, and I want to help but I don't know HOW. Do you have sort of a ...starter list of shops or types of clothes or anything? TL;dr -- tee shirt Mom needs help pls
Firstly, you are an AWESOME mom.
Ask your kid what style of goth they're interested in; ask them for images, links, anything. Goth/punk fashion is a vast umbrella for all sorts of different things. No matter what they show you, remember that goth/punk fashion doesn't have to be from "subculture" stores - avoid places like Killstar, Dolls Kill (ESPECIALLY AVOID THEM), Shein, etc. A lot of the basics are things you can find at any big-box mainstream store (or Amazon); for speciality items, shops like Foxblood, Lively Ghosts, and Die With Your Boots On are great. And don't forget resale sites! eBay, Poshmark, Depop, etc. However, some recommendations for goth/punk basics:
Oversized black shirts - tshirts, button ups, tunics, whatever. All of these can be customized by cutting off collars, sleeves, adding slashes, adding safety pins, adding lace or ribbons ... you get the idea.
Black leggings.
A black duster. Lace, satin, velvet, cotton, rayon, whatever. You can find some amazing ones by searching for "black beach cover up" on Amazon.
Fishnet tights - cut off the feet, cut out the crotch, and boom! Instant fishnet shirt to wear under other things.
Belts. No matter the gender presentation, wearing an interesting belt will make the outfit more striking. There are all sorts of faux corset belts out there (which are my personal preference), but layering a bunch of different belts is also a great look.
Boots! While there are a LOT of specialty gothy boots out there, black boots in a style like the original Dr. Marten's boots are a classic for a reason.
With those things as a foundation, your teen can start enhancing and customizing their look with accessories - necklaces, bracelets, pins, (this is where thrift stores and mainstream mall stores can be helpful - layer on all the necklaces you can find from Ross or TJ Maxx!), or shawls, scarves, plain blazers they customize, etc. Antimony and Lace has great project tutorials. Pretty on Purpose
HOW TO MAINTAIN A PRETTY AURA ON A BUDGET
beauty maintenance tips:
at home mani-pedi: having your nails done at a salon constantly can sometimes be hard to keep up with when you don’t have the budget for a 70-150$ set every 2 weeks, so pick up a at home acrylic set to do for yourself along with some cute nail polish for your toes💅🏽 I usually stick to a super cute but classic french manicure. KISS Salon Acrylic Nude set is so pretty + fits every skin tone! It retails for about 7 dollars + lasts for over a week! with great care they can stretched for two weeks.
kitchen face masks: im not crazy about DIY skincare because i do believe proper skin care products are specifically made to absorb into the skin, not just sit on top BUT i do understand running out of my favorite LUSH mask of magnaminty while i’m trying to save a coin or two can cause more stress pimples than my pretty face can afford. SO, a simple yet effective mask (+ only kitchen masks i’ll ever whip up) is my go-to. Try a mix of manuka honey (or any unfiltered RAW honey) and turmeric. That’s all, mix a small amount + apply to your skin for even tone and glowy skin. Also you can’t go wrong with a Aztec Healing Clay Mask, that’ll run you about 12 bucks.
style your natural hair: hair tends to be my BIGGEST beauty bill, so during times when i need save + my hair isn’t already in a style, i focus on styling my curls. Slick back buns + ponytails are my go-to. It’s simple, sleek, + super cute! If managing your natural hair is too much, braiding hair is about 5-8 $ per pack, this’ll be a great time to sit in front a mirror, prop up that laptop + find a good tutorial on easy braid styles. Learn how to do knotless braids on yourself or those super adorable North West chunky braids, building skill during this time could not only save you money but with practice, save you the hassle we all experience dealing with hairstylist.
body mist + perfume minis: idk about y’all but when i look + SMELL good, i feel good. Running out your favorite fragrances during a time when you don’t have the extra cash to re-up can be like losing an old and familiar friend, look up the notes in that fragrance + make your way to a department store like Marshall’s, Ross, TJ Maxx, Burlington, Walmart or Target + get a body mist or perfume dupe! Marshall’s + TJ Maxx usually carry a travel size of many lux perfumes. If you’re obsessed with Juicy Couture fragrances like me, they’re always at these places for super low prices too. Body mists with similar notes can give you a more affordable fragrance option too. To keep body mists scent lingering a little longer try to pick up a similar scented body oil. These options shouldn’t cost you more than 20$, unless your aiming for the perfume dupes or smaller sizes of your favorites, most of them are going for 20-40$ which is a lot more affordable than the 120+ dollars we spend on full size perfumes.
shop your own closet + make a wishlist: shopping sprees are my favorite past time, but saving money can put a quick halt to that hobby. So instead I tend to focus on what i already have, pick out my favorites + literally style them in as many ways as i can- this is also a great time to develop your styling skill, experiment with different pairings + what not. If you just enjoy being out shopping like myself, there is nothing wrong with window shopping for yourself, i call it ‘wishlist hunting’. Go out, get yourself a nice lil lunch, grab ice coffee or chai latte and hit up your favorite stores. There is no law against browsing! (lol but avoid luxury stores or boutique due to them most times having a policy against browsing) Anyways, browse your favorite stores + make note of your next pick ups once you’re able to. It’s like manifesting lol. It also gives you something to look forward to once you’re able to splurge so you won’t be frivolously spending once you get extra coin.
mental health maintenance:
to be transparent, being in tight spot financially can sometimes cause me to worry + feel stressed, even if i’m able to manage all my bills + food. Not having extra money to do the things i want, the way i want can be depressing. My mental + emotional well-being is more important to me than just looking pretty, i want to feel that way too. Being pretty also means my thoughts aren’t against me, especially about things out of my control. Being pretty means that i’m in high energy, not only to be kind to others but kind to myself. Ive been dealing with chronic depression + anxiety since i was 14, so maintaining the things that bring me joy + comfort me is prioritized during times of worry or stress. Being pretty isn’t just about my nails + hair staying done, being pretty is knowing i’m in a safe space with myself so i wont act out in ugly ways. A lot of people don’t acknowledge how managing finances can add to stress + sadness, why should i allow myself to be angry and anxious? that’s ugly to me. Therapy isn’t always accessible or affordable, so journaling is my go-to until i’m able to access professional mental health services. A super cute girls and thems night in is great for the heart, vent it out with your closest friends. Volunteering is free! it’s a great way to give back during a time when you may not have the funds to and gets you out of your mind about things out of your control. Donate or sell some old clothes to help other itgrls on a budget be pretty on purpose. Something about seeing other people appreciate things you don’t show enough love to anymore is good for the conscious.
remember, there is no one in this universe who can be you better than yourself and who you are should not depend on how much or how little you have at any given moment.
xoxo, itgrl Pier

“If she was smart, she'd understand that about herself, target the TJ Maxx / Ross / Home Goods / Marshalls group, corner the market there, then scale up once she has a loyal community who can do the marketing for her by talking about the products on social media.” Drew Barrymore did this with her home decor line with Walmart. I was surprised by it at first but it makes sense. If you’re known for one thing (acting) and want to dip your toe in a new venture (home decor) then starting with a partnership with a country-wide box store like Walmart is smart. Several other celebrities have similar partnerships. Carrie Underwood’s Calia line at Dick’s Sporting Goods and Johanna Gaines’ Magnolia Home at Target. I understand her desire to be seen as part of the super elite and want them as customers but she just isn’t there. If she didn’t fit in with the BRF/aristos, she’s not going to fit in with the super wealthy in the U.S.. You’re right that she needs to have a more realistic view of herself but I don’t think her ego will allow it.
Nope. Her ego won't take anything less than the 90s/00s dream she had while at Northwestern.
And something Meghan is probably too ignorant to realize is that the super wealthy shops at supermarkets, department stores, and discount retailers just like the rest of us. The only difference is that we go there ourselves. The super wealthy will send an assistant or use Instacart/Uber Eats.
At the end of the day, if it's a good, well-made, value-added product and popular and "it" enough on social media that the kids of the Ladies Who Lunch at Bergdorf's are talking about it, the super wealthy will buy it. It's the ultimate meaning of "if you build it, they will come."
Whereas Meghan's ego seems to be telling her "When they come, I will build it." Which kinda makes sense, in the way that she won't plunk down the money for product until it's been guaranteed that the people she wants to have it will buy it. But she can't get the audience she wants because she doesn't have the product in the first place.
It's a fascinating study. It's either a "if you give a mouse a cookie" case study or a "you were given everything, how could you fuck it up this badly" case study.

chérie do you own any jewelry ? i'm thinking of buying some but i don't know where, mostly people recommend to buy from shein and amazon but do you know any other options ?
Girl do NAWT buy jewelry from shein omg 😭 ethics aside that shit won't last a week and I'm speaking from experience. It all depends on what you want tbh. I personally prefer jewelry that won't turn so I'm very particular about where I buy things from. I assume you want affordable jewelry so if you're in the US I recommend Marshall's, Ross and TJ Maxx or similar places. Walmart also isn't bad. If you're not in the US, Amazon isn't bad either but just be thorough with looking through the reviews. I also thrift for good jewelry too. I can personally attest for DH Gate. Every bangle I've gotten from there I shower in and they don't turn nor scuff but depending on what shop you got it from, it may take you a WHILE to get it. I'm literally still waiting on a bracelet I bought back in DECEMBER
If you prefer to save money for jewelry that's a bit pricier, then piercing pagoda all the way

No cuz why do rich people have the worst taste in fashion?! LIKE YOU GOT ALL THAT MONEY AND YOU'RE SPENDING IT ON SHIT THAT LOOKS LIKE IT WAS MADE BLINDLY??? HAND YO MONEY OVER!
RIGHT?! AND THEY COME UP WITH GOOFY CLOTHING COMBINATIONS AND YOU'RE JUST LIKE "THAT'S FASHION?!"
If I become rich, I'd still be shopping at Ross, Marshalls and TJ Maxx.

Dollar Tree wins
From yesterday. So no, they didn't have what I was looking for besides gift bags, but I looked around. The economy is nuts, might as well look, right? The gift bags I found were pretty look! A mandalorion and a spiderman gift bag fit the bill for last night's birthday party for the nephew... got a couple extra for my gift closet.
Ok, so I now know that the tuna packs and mustard is cheaper at walmart. And they did have too much else for skinny fridge, but I think I got some kind of roasted bell pepper.
No True North 4 packs this time :-(
But I got some pickles. I did see some energy drinks I haven't tried yet. $1.25 for a Monster is a good deal, compared to what I get the Sam's Club packs for. And the flavor, pineapple, is decent. I would go back for more on those. Haven't tried the others, I try not to do more than 1 energy drink a day.
But! OMG SF butterscotch? I was going to buy on Amazon or Walmart until I saw the prices- $11-20 because it is "bulk" at least a pound. I hope these are good. I love a coffee flavor called Highlander Grog but it always makes me want more butterscotch flavor.
And I found these "crunchy" rice rolls. Which looks similar to some 70 cal "skinny" bars I got from like tj maxx/Ross. Just not individually wrapped but cheaper- so trade off.
I am started to be way more careful on buying sweets & munchies. Focusing on individually wrapped items & lower calorie treats. So it is possible there will be a time when these will add bulk/carbs to something.
And trident gum in fruit flavors. Those were my new stand outs this trip. I like the icebreakers but I chew them and after a minute want to start another. I need to get out of that habit. Why did I think it was ok to pay $5 for a thing of gum? Yikes.
I did splurge for a pack of tuna and a fridge pack of hot pickles for a quickie fast food "lunch".... but lost the tuna in the bags and the wind was insane, so I subbed in a stick of chicken jerky instead. Ugg.
I did peruse the frozen section... I found a "seasoning" blend that looked like it was worth a try, okra, & stir fry pepper blend. I deemed those worthy.

I realized since all I wear is black I could just,,, go as the traveller while carrying the Ik puppet. I went to get the last of Ik’s materials and tried to find a brown hat. Seems simple enough right. Literally the only defining feature of the traveller. How hard can it be to find. One hat. Brown
Didn’t realize the Super Bowl was tomorrow and I’m right in the middle of chiefs territory!!! I have never seen a Walmart so crowded. Each store I went to was packed to the brim. I went to Walmart, tj maxx, Marshall’s, Ross, five below and party city, just to eventually find the darn thing in a target
Tumblr media
I don’t like wearing hats because of my curls but it looked nice sitting on the back of my head and tilted up a little. I’ll put some black (tulle I think it’s called?) around the bottom and have it hang like a veil. If there’s still room for participants I’ll try and go to the cosplay contest with Ik
I would also like to clarify for anyone who isn’t aware (the blueprint was kinda vague), the Ik puppet is at least FIVE FEET TALL. I’ve been sewing clothes n shit for a grown ass man (without legs)
Tumblr media
This is from this morning. I HAVE BEEN SEWING THIS ALL BY HAND. Zero experience making clothes. I am running on pure unfiltered autism to bring him to life.

Where do you do most of your shopping? I really like your style 😊
Thrift stores!!!!!!!
Most of my favorite clothes I wear are thrifted. I adore thrift stores. The red dress I just posted was thrifted, as was the black dress from the other day! Thrift stores also carry overstock from halloween stores around october, so you can get a ton of fishnets with different patterns around that time for super cheap. Tiktok has a lot of resources on fun ways to diy thrifted clothing, I heard. I still use the hairband for t-shirts trick with nearly every shirt I wear.
I don't go on depop often because I like The Hunt of thrift stores and actual stores are cheaper, but if you can't find a specific article in stores, they probably have it on depop (I've also heard good things about thred up). My one and only vintage Nirvana tee I got on depop a few years ago!
Mall destinations: Hot topic is great for band tees and accessories! They also sell some subculture-inspired clothes like dresses and stuff, but the material quality isn't very good, so I don't buy them. It'd be nice for photos, though! Spencer's has fun belts, too.
Killstar makes some gorgeous, gorgeous gothic clothes. Their bags are insane. I got their time warp purse for christmas and bought a dress, gloves, and shirt from there a while back. The quality was incredible.
Lamoda shoes are soooo pretty. I only have one pair, though, so I can't vouch!
Devil Inspired sells J-Fashion and has gorgeous alt clothes, HOWEVER it's like Russian roullete with the sizing and their return policy is dogwater (you have to pay a ton for it). Catch them on a free shipping sale day if you don't want to cry.
I also have some stuff from Dollskill, but if you buy from there, it's best to buy secondhand because they're not the most ethical company.
Demonias are pricey, but their shoes are fucking insane. I only have one pair (the bunny ones) but I will be daydreaming of winning the lottery and buying their whole stock.
Don't be afraid to check ross, tj maxx, and marshall's for basics. Most of it is like lulu lemon kind of clothing, but you'd be surprised at the amount of affordable basics they have that you can layer (eg: a simple black turtleneck that you accessorize with jewelry, mesh tops to go under dresses, simple silver chain jewelry, etc).
But overall, my main shopping destination is thrift stores! Love love love love thrift stores.

Bathroom Sink Drain Cleaning
Bathroom sink drain cleaning Dania Beach is a relatively simple process that can be done in less than an hour. The first thing to do is to shut off the water supply to the sink. You do not want any water flowing through your pipes when you are working on them, or else you risk causing serious damage. Once you have turned off the water supply, remove the stopper from the drain and remove any hair from the trap in order to make sure that it is clear of debris. Next, use a plunger in order to try and clear whatever is clogging your drain. If this does not work, you can try using chemical drain cleaners or other home remedies that promise to clear up clogged drains.
If all else fails, then you will need to call a professional plumber in order to get help with your problem

Tiktok regularly irritates me in new flavors but lately there has been a trend that's like "omg run, don't walk, to your local Marshalls/Tj Maxx/Ross/Whatever" and then they show you the most soulless, bad quality, generic goth/alt bullshit like a bag that looks like a Spellbook or a tea tray ouija board or whatever and after about the fifteenth one it is so tiring bc
1) it's Halloween. Every store is selling Halloween shit. Run don't walk? Walk as slowly as you want, Walmart isn't gonna run out of sweatshop made pleather bags any time soon
2) all that shit looks the same and it's ugly and I know it's gonna break in like 3 weeks
But by then it will be not Halloween so you and your 8000 tiktok clones can throw your ugly $25 bags in the trash just to repeat next year. Gag. At least go on Etsy and buy from a real artist or SOMETHING.

clothing stores you can purchase things that are like ACTUALLY COOL AND USUALLY INEXPENSIVE
1. Kohls- you can buy Juicy couture, Uggs (like the tall black ones with bows), and so much more there and kohls cash 2. TJ Maxx- like the same as kohls y’all have been sleeping on TJ Maxx TGEY have hello kitty stools 3. Marshals- especially around Halloween their bed sheets and sets are just perfect 4. Ross- they go rlly hard especially their knockoff affliction hoodies and Sanrio tanks Yes yes these are all forms of fast fashion so spend cautiously but all those middle aged mom stores do sell emo / scene / mcbling things if you look and they are relatively cheap so don’t bash on ppl who need actual stores to find their sizes or to be able to afford cool stuff Thrift stores are fun but now more than ever it is hard to find stuff and a lot of them aren’t even all that cheap anymore #stay cool
