I felt it was only right to wrap up Smaugust with an actual dragon...but since I’m in a place of fairy folk exploration I thought why not meld the two and give you the "Fairy Eater”.
A medium size drake, this dragon populates temperate forests, disguised as a harmless butterfly. The Fairy Eater is highly dimorphic and mirrors dozens of various butterfly species across the globe. While not exclusively a fairy eating dragon, fairies do make up a large portion of their diet.

Today is IMBOLC! Imbolc is the feast day of Brigid, a goddess of pre-Christian Ireland. She appears in Irish mythology as a member of the Tuatha Dé Danann, the daughter of the Dagda and wife of Bres, with whom she had a son named Ruadán. She is associated with wisdom, poetry, healing, protection, smithing and domesticated animals. Brigid's cross is a small variant of the cross often woven from straw or rushes. My artwork depicts Brigid's cross with some added Celtic flare to it. All of the variations of my Brigid's Cross artwork in this post are available on prints and apparel at celtichammerclub.threadless.com ➖ #celtichammerclub #brigid #brigit #brid #irishgoddess #goddess #irish #ireland #irishmythology #imbolc #feastofbrigid #brigidfeastday #candlemas #irishart #celt #celtic #celticart #celticknot #cross #brigidcross #brgidscross #art #originalart #spring #springforward #springiscoming #saintbrigid #irishsaint #saintsofireland #ancientireland https://www.instagram.com/p/CoISSV_L6mA/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Artist Research | Ceramics Elective

ABOUT
' My work stems from a visceral need to create with my hands using natural materials and a love of the sculptural vessel form.
The vessel being one of the oldest objects ever made and one of the most commonly found in archeological sites the world over, to me it’s an embodiment of the timelessness, endurance and the universality of the human experience. ' - Kotan
She explores the form of the vessel and vases as a result of her exploration of the feminine form. This type of exploration appeals to me as it steeped in historical and archaeological significance. This is an area of exploration I may find myself in as the years progress.
The second artist I was introduced to by Tutor Mary Conroy is Zuzana jezikova an Irish based ceramics artist. As part of her work she has developed it around Irish mythology which she has captured very evocatively in both her paintings and then transferring it to her ceramic work giving it a contemporary mood but still keeping something that is quite archaic similar to cave drawings.

I love the colours she captures in her paintings and sculptures and I find her style inspiring to my own ideas of how I would like to create.

The children of Lir…. I decided to start my own challenge for June, I’m going to be illustrating a picture from Irish folklore. #TeaserTuesday this is one of my favorite scenes, cause not only do we see #Nemain one of the three #Irish fates but we also have #Odin and his daughter in on the #FamilialBanter and yes, Odin does talk in 3rd person quite a lot. Yes, I know it’s odd but he’s an odd giant of a being who likes to irk people. Also, Tory will have her own book in the #BornAngelNovels. Just not yet. Yes, I do include #norsemythology, #irishmythology, #celticmythology, and even some others (including Greek and Egyptian) into my saga #TheBornAngelUniverse this is because I’ve loved #mythology since I was a kid and the idea that sprang to my mind for this #AlternateUniverse is that all pantheons exist and are actually Angels and their descendants who were set up to look after different areas of the world and their people. Yep, that’s a thing you now know. But PLEASE remember this is #Fiction and so not all the #facts are there or correct. Thank you for reading!! #PreorderisLive #PreorderToday! #UrbanFantasy #CrimeThriller #createdangelchronicles #Angels #Demons #Gods #Goddesses #Mythos #legends #excited https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpfxh52rdKY/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Gnomes are a small, ground dwelling, fairy found across most temperate forests, grasslands and in rare occasions mountain dwellings. They are one of the few fairies to be commonly found alongside human dwellings, having an affinity for their gardens. While most fairy beings can be seen as pests, the Gnome has managed to sway favor as they speak to a relatively good sign for agricultural communities. Having a Gnome is a good sign your crop is healthy and being tended too.
While most fairy species live relatively peacefully alongside one another, the Gnome is one of the few fairy species who do engage in warfare. This animosity is particularly found with Pixies.
Their “red cap” has become the moniker of the species. However this “cap” is not a piece of fashion, but a highly sensitive sensory organ used to help travel in their deep underground dens. They also act as a silent way to communicate with one another in dense brush or long grass. Only males of the species possess one. Female’s caps are small and dome-like, which they commonly adorn with flower crowns. The male’s cap doesn’t always remain active, they can actively render their cap flaccid, allowing them to burrow and squeeze into tight spaces. A male’s cap will grow throughout the course of his life, some reaching lengths double their body length.

Just hanging out with my new friend Manannán mac Lir, the Irish Neptune! 😺 Legend says this sea god has a self-navigating boat named Sguaba Tuinne, a horse Aonbharr which can course over water as well as land, and a deadly strength-sapping sword named Fragarach. In local tradition, votive offerings were made to such deities. It was cool seeing this statue on the hilltop, but it felt super eerie being the only one here and he has a very intense stare, probably controlling the sea or something powerful. Time to book it down the mountain! Does anyone else get eerie feelings in certain places? Like my body wanted to leave soon after reading the information plaque about Manannán mac Lir and knowing his power #chasingcrystal #irishmythology #northernirelandtourism #solofemaletraveler #mototraveler #mototrip #mototour #winterride (at Gortmore Viewpoint) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpVh6mnPfK0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

!NEW ARTWORK! The Badb Catha (Battle Crow) is one of three iterations of war goddess collectively known as the Morrigna. The Morrigna are mentioned throughout Irish mythology and are said to foreshadow death and influence fate and the outcome of battles. The Battle Crow in particular is associated with striking fear and confusion in soldiers engaging in battle. The Morrigna are a prominent and terrifying motif in ancient Celtic mythology. Ravens and crows are prevalent throughout many ancient mythologies and are often associated with war, death, and premonition. This common theme across cultures is most likely because of Crows’ propensity for feasting on the dead flesh of fallen soldiers. However, another interesting theory indicates that these birds are so intelligent that they learned to recognize when a battle was about to begin from the formation of troops, etc, and then gather above/near the battlefield seemingly predicting the coming fighting and death. This is what gave them their seemingly prophetic abilities. 🐓BOOK REVIEW : Mother of the River (Protectors, Book 1)
Emily McPherson  Eyebright Books (ARC, Out March 7th 2023)
Tumblr media
For a long time, Ianthe has mourned her mother who vanished suddenly when she was six years old. At her place, a statue mysteriously appeared in the middle of the river ; a statue that is the exact depiction of her mother. For a long time, Ianthe thought her mother died, and the sculpture, a memorial created by her father. But when an old acquaintance returns to town and suggests the statue isn't just a statue, Ianthe sets off on the trail of a mythical creature.
Emily McPherson created a beautiful and intriguing story populated with folktales and legendary celtic creatures. It is a fantastic adventure where a young woman goes on a journey to save her mother, trapped in stone for decades by the Screch Sidhe. I really enjoyed this novel. The world building is incredible. I really had the feeling to walk the Irish paths with the heroine and her friend. The beauty and magic of Ireland are at the heart of the story, as Ianthe unlocks her family secrets.
