Spring time gets me thinking a lot about the mysterious character known as the green man. These odd little foliate heads are found hiding in medieval churches and nobody knows for sure what they are exactly. Here is my artistic rendition of a clan of Celtic warriors on the march to battle! I leave it open to interpretation what tribe of Celts these guys are. They could be Gauls or Britons on the march to kick some Roman butt. They could be Picts on the march to battle with invading Saxons. They could be Gaels looking to put down a rival clan. Regardless of how you see it, the ogham inscription at the center sews a common thread among all interpretations. “Cuchulainn stirred, Stared on the horses of the sea, and heard The cars of battle and his own name cried; And fought with the invulnerable tide.” - William Butler Yeats - This is my portrait of legendary Irish hero CuChulainn. I refer to him as “the Irish Berserker” because CuChulainn was famous for going into a berserker rage in battle called the “warp spasm.” I left his face in shadow to give him a mysterious, ominous presence. The knotwork surrounding him represents other bits of his mythology. - CuChulainn, mortally wounded in battle, tied himself to a rock standing upright. This was so, even in death, he could face his enemies on his feet. Epic stuff.
