she never asked for any recognition, because she wasn’t doing it to be recognized.
she did it because it filled her up.
she just carefully planted those seeds.
she just kept picking up those pieces.
she just kept visiting those old ones.
she just kept speaking her language and visiting her mother.
she just kept on lighting that seventh fire every time it went out.
she just kept making things a little bit better, until they were.

Here’s the most recent chapter of my novel!
The Uktena - 20. Whispers in the Forest (Ro) (on Wattpad)
Camping out in the woods so that your sister and her roommate can finish a photography assignment is supposed to be fun, right? That is, until a giant snake decides that you're his next meal. Yeah, that kinda puts the original plans on the back burner. The Uktena is a giant horned serpent with a diamond third eye from Cherokee legends. But why is he going after 4 college students who are just wandering through the forest behind their home? Does anyone who goes through that part of the forest pique his attention, or is there something unique about them?

I have been #reading the #trickstertrilogy over the last week. I can’t tell you what it was about these books that pulled me in and kept me reading long into the night, downloading the next one the minute I finished the last one until the last page was turned on the entire series, but it was one hell of an emotional roller coaster. Jared’s character is so f#@ked up and I just wanted him to make it out of the crazy so bad. This series really hits on how insane family can be especially when there is addiction rearing it’s ugly head right at the heart, but throw in creatures from #indigenousfolklore plus magic, ancient grudges and greed and you have a story I couldn’t put down. #readthisseries #bookstagram #sonofatrickster #edenrobinson #bookgeek #tricksterdrift #bookworm #returnofthetrickster #booknerd #booklove #bookish #indigenousauthor #indigenousbooks #bibliophile #bookaddict #bookaholic #bibliotherapy #booksicouldntputdown #books #read #readme https://www.instagram.com/p/CWomSxhgEl4/?utm_medium=tumblr

"It seems so obvious when you're the one with blood on your hands right? Like everyone's watching you. Like everybody's waiting". Night of the Mannequins by Stephen Graham Jones was one wild ride. It had my heart racing from the very beginning and it felt like my mind was literally playing tricks on me. It had all the campy, slasher vibes that gave me all the nostalgic feels and had me fighting with myself late at night wondering if I should continue reading and risk the nightmare or just wait it out until the next day. I still don't think I know if the monster was real or just a figment of Sawyer Grimes', the protagonist's imagination or a reflection of his innermost psyche. Sawyer was the perfect psycho and I loved how the author tells the story through Sawyer's thoughts. This POV really made the story come to life and you got to experience all the creepy and horrific action in real time. You don't know if you want to look away or keep watching. The fact that it is all taking place while a slasher film plays in the background gives it that extra dose of mystery and irony. The author does a great job of laying out each scene but tricking you at the same time. Even though this was a horror novella, I could not help but almost feel sorry for our teen killer. He thinks he is killing his friends to prevent others from dying. But I can't help but see how his character was a metaphor for teen angst. It wasn't until the very last two pages that I got the full picture of what he was going through inside his own mind. He felt out of place in his own friend group, pined away for his female best friend, longed for the feeling of family within his peer group, coveted their family lives and wore a mask so people couldn't see who he actually was. He tried to be the superhero. It was very reminiscent of some of my favorite slasher films. This short gem embodied everything I love about slasher films. I am a SGJ fan for life. I cannot wait to read through his entire body of work now. My bookdragon rating is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 #NightoftheMannequins #HorrorBook #StephenGrahamJones #ownvoices #IndigenousAuthor #Bookstagram #bookphotos #bibliophile #IndigenousBooks #diversereads (at Bushwick) https://www.instagram.com/p/CKnFvcYgGvs/?igshid=ydcr79qkpxq2

If you’re longing for a book to immerse yourself in, that will give you something positive and beautiful to fill your brain and perhaps evolve your understanding of the natural world, look no further. I’ve been loving Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer, which I’m late to the party on but which has been like a breath of fresh air in the dead of winter. The subtitle describes what this book has to offer - Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants. Kimmerer is excellent at fusing her indigenous knowledge and scientific acumen to explain how plants function in concert with the rest of the natural world, and how their relationship of reciprocity illustrates the goal all people should be striving for in their relationships with the natural world and one another. Her evocative prose reframes biological processes into beautiful lessons guiding our own evolution and understanding. If you haven’t read this book yet, get it in your queue. It’s the perfect book to be reading as spring comes. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Note: I bought that braid of sweetgrass years ago before I understood its place as a sacred plant that you should get only from indigenous vendors. I love to smell it - it really is one of the most comforting scents, like a field of hay with just a hint of cinnamon or vanilla essence. And now that I’ve been reading this book I hear the lovely Anishinaabe word for sweetgrass - wiingaashk - in my head whenever I smell it. #books #bookstagram #indigenouswriters #indigenousauthors #braidingsweetgrass #plants #botany #nature #instabook #instabooks #bookrecommendations #booklover #currentlyreading #naturalscience #indigenousknowledge #reciprocity #sweetgrass #ecology #reading #diversifyyourbookshelf #readersofinstagram #readmorebooks https://www.instagram.com/p/CZMj0-QO3lR/?utm_medium=tumblr

I finally got around to reading Speaking Our Truth: A Journey of Reconciliation by Monique Gray Smith, and it's an incredible book. It offers a great deal of historical information about residential schools as well as detailing the steps that are being made towards understanding that history and towards reconciliation. It takes a difficult subject and makes it easier to understand. It holds your hand through the intense and painful journey. It's an ideal starting place for those first learning about residential schools, whether they be children or older readers, and it suggests extra resources as well. Highly recommended! #reading #bookrecommendations #bookreview #books #booksofinstagram #booksofinsta #bookstagram #canadian #canadianhistory #indianresidentialschool #indigenousauthors #reconciliation https://www.instagram.com/thefeministbibliothecary/p/CZC5KkyP_Vc/?utm_medium=tumblr

This Is How Reading Multiple Book Blogs Can Enrich Your Reading Life
⚜Welcome back to Lamon Reviews.⚜ Everyday, at some point, I quietly peruse my emails. Depending on how many post the blogs I follow have scheduled, I read about 10 quick blog post, reviews and tips. #monthlyroundup 13 books in June included a few #PrideMonth reads including Boyfriend Material, The Book of Pride and The House in the Cerulean Sea. This month I actually read a lot of short quick reads 2 horror novellas by Stephen Graham Jones, 2 Gaiman graphic novels and a couple of inspirational fluff books. My favorites this month were Inspired and House in the Cerulean Sea along with my reread/listen of Battle Ground. The real disappointment was Likely Stories which ended up being kind of gross in a dirty old man way and not the beautiful twisted fantasy that I love from Gaiman. #PrideReads #JuneTBR #MRDRC21 #bookriotreadharderchallenge2021 #graphicnovel #LGTBQStories #middlegradebooks #IndigenousAuthors #RelgiousBooks #nonfiction #nerdymama #nerdybooks #booknerd #bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CQzLMmwroee/?utm_medium=tumblr
