Fishing Platforms and Cascade Locks
Once again we’re on the Columbia River, about forty miles east of Portland, Oregon. These wooden structures, from which indigenous folks harvest salmon, are traditional, with the sites being handed down through families (source). The two platforms pictured here are attached to the Cascade Lock, which date to 1896. The Bridge of the Gods can be seen in the distance, second picture.

Mixtec indigenous people take part in the Day of the Dead celebrations in Guerrero, Mexico. Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos), a religious holiday combining the death veneration rituals of Pre-Hispanic cultures with the Catholic practice, is widely celebrated throughout all of Mexico. Based on the belief that the souls of the departed may come back to this world on that day, people gather together while either praying or joyfully eating, drinking, and playing music, to remember friends or family members who have died and to support their souls on the spiritual journey. - Copyright © 2022 Jan Sochor Photography

Some of the world’s biggest mining companies have withdrawn requests to research and extract minerals on Indigenous land in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest, and have repudiated Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s efforts to legalize mining activity in the areas. The Brazilian Mining Association (Ibram), which represents around 130 companies, conducted an internal survey of its members earlier this year, according to Raul Jungmann, its president. For the first time in decades, none of the companies have current research or mining applications for gold, tin, nickel, iron and other ores in Indigenous areas, he said. The collective retreat comes as Bolsonaro insists Indigenous territories contain mineral resources vital to bringing prosperity to both the nation and native peoples. Brazil’s Constitution states that mining can only take place on Indigenous lands after getting informed consent and under laws that regulate the activity. More than three decades later, such legislation still hasn’t been approved. Biawacheeitchish, the legendary "Woman Chief" was a warrior & leader who had several wives.
Woman Chief was kind of a big deal, ranking third on the Crow's Council of Chiefs. She lead for possibly 20 years before being assassinated around 1858.
She also had stories written about her by Europeans, but these are mostly-to-wholly sensational fictions and don't reflect her actual life.

*100Days100Women information is taken from sources on the internet and in my personal library. Though I research each drawing, some artistic liberties are taken with dress and props. History is something I love, but I am not an historian, but an artist attempting to bring forgotten history to the fore, and to pique your curiosity for more info! I encourage everyone to find out more about these amazing women!

The Taino people, an indigenous group of the Caribbean, held a rich and vibrant culture long before the arrival of European settlers. With roots in the Greater Antilles and the Bahamas, the Taino are known for their skilled craftsmanship, intricate art, and a deep connection to the natural world. Unfortunately, their history is marked by the impact of colonization, but their legacy persists through archaeological discoveries and the cultural influences they left on the Caribbean region. The Taino are a testament to the diverse and resilient cultures that have shaped the history of the Americas.

International Day of the World’s Indigenous People
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Every year on August 9th, the International Day of the World's Indigenous People is marked to promote awareness of and protect the rights of the indigenous peoples around the world. This celebration also honours indigenous people's accomplishments and contributions to global issues like environmental preservation. The United Nations General Assembly declared it for the first time in December 1994, on the anniversary of the first gathering of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in 1982.
Every year, it is organised around a particular theme, and this year's theme is "The Role of Indigenous Women in the Preservation and Transmission of Traditional Knowledge."
The world's indigenous communities are honoured on August 9 as part of the International Day of the World's Indigenous People. It is well known that these communities each have their own distinctive set of languages, customs, cultures, and institutional systems. The unique connection and bond many indigenous peoples have with nature has also contributed to the protection of the environment as a whole.
On the other hand, numerous indigenous groups experience challenges as a result of a central government's hidden and overt attempts to regulate their lives. Instead of ensuring their peaceful and harmonious lives, this has led to the violation of indigenous people's rights.
Let's celebrate this day, spread the word about it, and do our part to protect the world's indigenous people.
