May 5 is the Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People. (Also known as Red Dress Day.)
Show your support and pass on your strength by wearing red on May 5, and raising awareness. And if you have never read the Reclaiming Power and Place report, you can do so here.
Additionally, while the day is typically centred in Turtle Island, let us also not forget our international cousins, especially in Palestine and Sudan.

Nex Benedict's death wasn't just for being transgender, it was for being native too. 2 Spirits are revered in many native cultures and it is a native-specific identity. This wasn't just a hate crime against trans & NB individuals, this was also a hate crime against Natives of Turtle Island.
You cannot separate Nex's trans identity from their native identity - this is a case of MMIWG2S (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2 Spirits).
Native children being killed at school is nothing new, so it's equally important to talk about Nex's native identity and being intersectional, this is a devastating tragedy for indigenous people, the queer community & especially those of us who are both indigenous and queer.
May Nex rest in peace 🪶

why is no one talking about the fact that nex benedict is indigenous?
they are choctaw.
native women and two-spirits are at the highest risk of sexual assault and domestic violence of any group. natives as a whole are at the highest risk for suicide. natives are also tied with Black americans for risk of being killed, both by police and by others.
it's critical to note that more than 90% of violence done against natives is committed by non-natives. this is a colonial issue, it's a genocide issue, it's an anti-indigenous issue.
when it comes to indians, our intersectional identities are often erased in favor of more visible or mainstream marginalizations like sex and gender.
this same thing happened when ezra miller kidnapped an indigenous teen. it happened when a nurse assaulted a native coma patient and she became pregnant and gave birth in her hospital bed. our indigenous identity is barely mentioned, despite this being a multinational crisis.

I know I don’t have a large following. I know this post will get lost in the sea of other posts. I know I don’t come on here often, and when I do I try to keep my page free from death and other serious topics. Yet, I think this is imperative to say, especially since I myself am of indigenous descent. I ask all of you to join me in solidarity.
Cole Brings Plenty, actor, model, and most importantly activist was found dead. He was assaulted in a club in Lawrence, Kansas. He was killed and his braids; a symbol of his heritage, of his Lakota decent, and a sacred symbol across many an indigenous nation, were forcibly cut.
I beg of thee and I plead with thee, spread the word. Do your part, however big or little, to bring light to this situation. Whether it be by reblogging this post or others alike, or by going out and making a stand. Do it.
Shed light on the situation. This goes beyond the death of one man. It is about the abuse and the destruction of natives and their communities. Of the killing of many an innocent soul. Of the brutalization of many First Nations.
We have seen time and time again, many indigenous people die by similar means. We need to bring light on the deaths of any and all indigenous individuals dead, missing or at risk. It is an epidemic, an assault, and a silent cleansing of many a nation.
Whether it be the estimated 6,000 dead at the hands of Canadian residential schools, the murdered and missing indigenous women and children, or the killing of an actor and activist, you cannot deny the sheer abhorrence of this problem. The problem of many Native American people dying, going missing and being abused, at an alarming rate. At a level unprecedented and unparalleled, at a level of which should not be kept silent.
Cole Brings Plenty, actor, model, activist.
Look at him and spread awareness for him and for many others befallen by the same fate.
Remember him. Remember all of the others. Let nobody else befall the same fate again.

MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women) is a human rights crisis of violence against Indigenous women in Canada and the United States
Quick facts:
4 of 5 Native women will experience violence
1/3 of Native women will experience sexual violence (and over 2/3 of that is committed by non-natives)
Murder is our 3rd leading cause of death
On some reservations MMIWG2S are murdered at 10x the national average rate
In general native women and girls are raped at twice the average national rate
According to a report by USA today, native women also go missing at the twice average national rate
Nearly all rapes are perpetuated by off reservations settlers who also face no legal repercussions (legal loopholes state you must be on tribal ground to be persecuted by tribal police and most don't stick sround)
Less than 1% of MMIW cases are logged
It's been awhile since I've since Ive posted about this, but it's a very important topic and one that's especially important to me right now.
Some of you following me have all the context clues but I'll say it plainly here on this post. My cousin is one of the many MMIW that have died awful deaths. I myself am one of the natives who've experiences violence and sexual violence. The article is right. I don't know a native who hasn't. And that shouldn't have to be our reality.
But it doesn't change without more support and we don't get support by keeping people in the dark. Unfortunately resources are directly tied to public interest in an issue. The actual MMIW site for example says it's on hiatus when you go to the resource section.
So please share this so that someone else can learn and become an ally to the cause. The way people treat native women, girls, and two spirits is awful and deserves more attention than it's getting.
May 5th is MMIW awareness day; please wear red, share our posts, schedule a vigil, make your own graphics/posts in support, etc. Make some time to show you care that day.
Just don't use the red hand over your mouth, this is representative of the violent silence MMIW are forced to keep in their graves and how those of us alive must speak for them. Its a heavy symbol that carries responsibility so it's best left alone if you aren't indigenous.

Protesters blocking the Brady Road landfill in south Winnipeg say their resolve is even stronger after a man shovelled a truckload of soil and debris onto an MMIWG mural near the blockade Sunday.
The blockade went up last week after the province refused to fund a search of Prairie Green landfill north of Winnipeg for the remains of two Indigenous women. The city ordered those blocking the roadway to vacate by noon Monday.
"Screw it. Who cares what they have to say? Who cares what they want? I'm not going to take no for an answer anymore," said Cambria Harris, whose mother's remains are believed to be at another landfill outside the city.
She said Camp Morgan — which has been at the Brady Road landfill since December— originally erected the blockade to "send a message," not to entirely block the landfill, which has two entrances.
But after the man's act on Sunday, she and others issued a call on social media for more "warriors" to join those on site, who said they're ready to keep rallying for change.
Harris said she wasn't at the blockade Sunday when the man in a black pickup truck dumped soil on the mural, but she saw the video of it happen, which she posted on social media.
In the video, the man is seen shovelling soil and debris from the back of his truck onto the mural, while telling protesters to "Take care of your own people." After someone responds [“we are, you fucking dumbass”], he asks, "Then why are they dead?"
Harris questions how he got past the security on site.
"Why are you so angry to feel like you have to take that extreme of a measure of a hate crime?" she asked.
"You don't realize that you're talking to an entire group of people who have been pulverized their entire life through systemic oppression."
"I'm outraged. I'm enraged. I'm infuriated," said supporter Melissa Morrisseau, who said she was at the landfill Sunday to help give a voice to missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls and their families.
"I'm here till the very end," she said.
Florance Smith was also there to take a stand with the families.
"They need to dig for our women," Smith said. "They just think that we belong in the garbage."
Harris said she believes the province's decision to not support a landfill search shows that the government doesn't care, and she now feels she's been disrespected by all three levels of government. She said it shouldn't have come to measures like the letter sent by the city, telling protesters to shut down the blockade.
"I've never ever understood it, why this kind of trauma is our fault," Harris said.
The mural, a red dress with the words "for our sisters" written on the skirt, was painted on the entrance road to the landfill, Ethan Boyer Way.

But after they realized the soil the man dumped contained cedar wood chippings, supporters decided to put them to use by sweeping the woodchips in a circle around the mural, she said.
"Cedar's our protection medicine, and we decided that we were going to include it into our art piece and circle her in protection," Bousquet said.
"We turned an ugly into a beautiful here. That's what our people are known for doing."
For Bousquet, it shows how resilient her community is.
"No matter what you throw on us … we're always going to create something beautiful," she said.

The daughter of a woman whose remains police believe are buried at a Winnipeg-area landfill has filed two human-rights complaints, including one against Manitoba's Progressive Conservative Party over ads opposing a landfill search that she says amount to discrimination.
"[To] see your mom being used for a political game to score points and votes was distressing," Cambria Harris, whose mother Morgan Harris's remains are believed to be at Prairie Green landfill north of the city, told CBC on Monday.
"It's distressing to know that someone would be so open and brazen about making those kinds of discriminatory comments to the point where they're willing to spend funds on those billboards and not put resources towards the vulnerable people their system is actively failing."

Hey, fun fact! See this young man? He was found dead in a forest. They chopped his hair off while he was intoxicated and tossed him in a forest. He was murdered. The media says there was "no foul play" surrounding his death, too. His name was Cole Brings Plenty, and he was murdered at age 27. Murdered. Stop covering it up. Stop lying to protect the people involved. They killed him.
