something was definitely different about dan heng's entire demeanor ever since he revealed his vidyadhara form. yes, he had always been quiet and distant, but as time passed, he gradually warmed up to you. now, after what happened on the xianzhou luofu, it was as if you were back at square one.

he wasn't shutting you out completely; he still let you be around him and let you do your thing. it was just that he went silent, looking somber and deep in thought. he never was one to open up about his inner struggles, but this time around, it wasn't entirely hard to figure out what was going on behind his pretty eyes.

but you didn't confront him about it. you never did.

instead, you sat curled up against him, your fingertips absentmindedly caressing the scales of his tail. though dan heng had agreed to return to the astral express, he barely left the archive room and didn't participate in anything – not even coming out to eat breakfast together with the crew. you were the only one he let in, hence you spent most of your time in said room alongside him. you were worried about him, yes, but you figured he just needed time to process all that went down. after all, the secret he so long carried upon his heart finally came to the surface, and his true form had showed; imbibitor lunae. now that was quite something.

dan heng didn't return your affection. instead, he stared ahead of him with his hands resting in his lap. you pretended not to mind, but secretly it saddened you a little. yet, you didn't show, and relished in his warmth as you leaned against him, now tiredly wrapping your arms around his tail.

you were slowly dozing off, given how it was already quite late at night. it wouldn't be the first time you'd fall asleep cuddling his tail, and you knew he didn't really mind. it wasn't long before the everlasting silence and the cadence of dan heng's breathing lulled you into a slumber.

now, dan heng finally seemed to wake up from his tense and statue-like state. his solemn gaze fell upon you, earnest grey eyes softening as he took in your sleeping form. he was well aware of how much he distanced himself after revealing his vidyadhara form, as he was scared what the others – and especially you – would think. but you didn't seem to mind, and your behavior around him hadn't changed one bit.

you still smiled at him as brightly as ever, you never looked at him weirdly nor was there any fear present in your eyes as you regarded him. if any, you liked to touch his horns and cuddle his tail and tell him how amazing he looked (before stuttering that he already looked good before the whole imbibitor lunae ordeal). no, you still treated him with the same attention and kindness, and his new form didn't stop you from visiting him in his room and cuddling up against him. something clicked inside his mind; you really didn't regard him any different, did you?

while the others were clearly in awe, treating him with some awkward form of respect, you never changed your act around him. he remembered the words you spoke to him after the hectic events that took place on the xianzhou luofu; "you might look different, but you're still dan heng."

it was okay. it was a big change, but it clearly wasn't that big of a deal for you. the person who was the most important to him accepted imbibitor lunae without a doubt. you were fine with it, and nothing else mattered.

dan heng felt at peace for the first time since. slowly, moving carefully not to wake you, he wrapped an arm around you, using his fingers to delicately move some strands of hair away from your face. he felt so grateful towards you, and he promised himself to show you. he was done distancing himself from you, as it was pointless. you accepted him, no matter what. he was safe with you.

Took Enyo to work with me because he's got a vet appointment later today and I have to say that even though he's very sneezy and I feel bad for him, having him with me in my office is sooooo good. I love when I'm answering emails or phone calls and he beeps and I just automatically answer him "yep" even though this makes me seem insane.

Nurses and Caretakers of the Gods. Part II: Ares and Hephaistos.

(As always, if you know any more sourced versions, I'd love it if you let me know!!!) Part I here.

Ares:

A quick overview of versions of his birth: he is almost universally the son of Zeus and Hera both (e.g. Hom. Il. 5.893, Hes. Th. 922–923; Apollod. 1.3.1), though he is also attested as solely born of Hera (in response to the birth of Athena after touching a prodigious flower from Olenos: Ovid. Fast. 5. 255), solely born of Zeus (after drinking the "male begetting" waters of the Nile: Schol. Aesch. Suppliant Women 855–856) or born of Enyo (Schol. Il. 5.156, Cornutus. Greek Theology. 21, see bellow, Enyo is curiously also attested as an epithet of Hera in Tzetzes ad Lycophron 493 and 519, perhaps in an attempt to reconcile both accounts). He is frequently said to have been born and/or raised in Thrace (e.g. Statius Thebaid 4.786). A fragment from a lost play by Aeschylus seems to give us a description of his childhood:

DIKE: (...) Hera has reared a violent son whom she has borne to Zeus, a god irascible, hard to govern, an one whose mind knows no respect for others. He shot wayfarers with deadly arrows, and ruthlessly hacked ... with hooked spears ... he rejoiced and laughed ... evil ... scent of blood ... [Two lines unintelligible] ... is therefore justly called ..." – Aeschylus, Fragment 282 (the passage likely etymologises the name Ares from ἀρή [bane, ruin, curse]) vicious little psycho

1. Nursed by Thero (Beastly): "Of all the objects along this road the oldest is a sanctuary of Ares. This is on the left of the road, and the image is said to have been brought from Colchis by the Dioscuri. They surname him Theritas after Thero, who is said to have been the nurse of Ares. Perhaps it was from the Colchians that they heard the name Theritas, since the Greeks know of no Thero, nurse of Ares." (Paus. 3.19.7-8)

2. Nursed (among other things) by Enyo: "Accounts of Enyo differ; for some she is the mother of Ares, some his daughter, some his nurse" (Cornutus Compendium of Greek Theology, 21). Elsewhere she is also his sister (Quintus. Fall of Troy 424) or his lover, begetting Enyalios (Eustathius on Homer p.944) she is his everything, literally.

3. Raised and taught the arts of dance and war by Priapos (incredibly enough), a deity originally worshipped in the city of Lampsakos (in the northern Troad), who after spreading throughout the classical world was primarily known as a rustic god with massive genitals:

"According to a Bithynian legend, which agrees well with this Italian institution, Priapos, a war-like divinity (probably one of the Titans, or of the Idaean Dactyls, whose profession it was to teach the use of arms), was entrusted by Hera with the care of her son Ares, who even in childhood was remarkable for his courage and ferocity. Priapos would not put weapons into his hands till he had turned him out a perfect dancer; and he was rewarded by Hera with a tenth part of all Ares’s spoils." – Lucian, De saltatione 21

Hephaistos:

Versions of his birth are more or less split evenly between him being the son of both Zeus and Hera (e.g. Hom. Il. 1.578, 14.338, 18.396. Od. 8.312.) or solely of Hera (Hes. Theog. 929, Apollod. 1.3.5, Hygin. Fab. Praef.), likely in response to the birth of Athena, or else preceeding it due of an unexplained quarrel (Hes. Fragment 343 MW). Regarding detalis of his parthenogenic conception: "Hera, without any man, being lifted up by the wind gave birth to Hephaistos" (Lucian. De sacrificiis 6), and regarding details on the the birth, it's sometimes said to have been from her thigh (Serv. Aen. 8.454). A quaint tale that tries to reconcile both traditions (Schol.bT. Il. 14.296) claims that Zeus and Hera secretly slept together on the island of Samos before they were married. After being oficially given in marriage to Zeus (by Okeanos and Tethys), Hera bore Hephaistos, and to conceal their premarital dalliance she pretended that she'd birthed him without need of a father. Finally, odd genealogies abound (which I almost didn't include, e.g. Paus. 8.53.5 or Cicero. de Nat. Deor. 3.22).

1. In most accounts he's raised for nine years by Thetis and Eurynome, after being thrown off Olympos at birth by Hera for being lame (main source is Hom. Il. 18.394-405):

"She [Thetis] saved me when I suffered much at the time of my great fall through the will of my own brazen-faced mother, who wanted to hide me for being lame. Then my soul would have taken much suffering had not Eurynome and Thetis caught me and held me, Eurynome, daughter of Okeanos, whose stream bends back in a circle. With them I worked nine years as a smith, and wrought many intricate things; pins that bend back, curved clasps, cups, necklaces, working there in the hollow of the cave, and the stream of Okeanos around us went on forever with its foam and its murmur. No other among the gods or among mortal men knew about us except Eurynome and Thetis. They knew since they saved me." (Trans. Lattimore)

I ship them. Many later accounts confuse both versions of his fall (see below), and so sometimes Thetis and Eurynome recieve him after he's hurled off Olympus by Zeus, presumably as an adult (e.g. Apollod. 1.3.5). Also a variation is found where Hephaestus is raised by Thetis and the rest of the Nereids:

"But my son Hephaestus whom I bare was weakly among all the blessed gods and shrivelled of foot, a shame and disgrace to me in heaven, whom I myself took in my hands and cast out so that he fell in the great sea. But silver-shod Thetis the daughter of Nereus took and cared for him with her sisters: would that she had done other service to the blessed gods!" (Homeric Hymn 3. 311-330)

2. According to the other main variant of his fall, Hephaistos is hurled off Olympos by Zeus after he tries to intervene on his mother's behalf during one of their quarrels (Homer, Iliad 1. 568), presumably to save her from a beating (Plato, Republic 378d), or specifically to free her after she'd been chained and hung from heaven (eg. Apollod. 1.3.5). In this version he falls on the island of Lemnos, and is nursed back to health by the tribe of Sintians (V. Fl. Argonautica. 2.8.5, Hom. Il. 1.590 is quoted below):

"There was a time once before now I was minded to help you [Hera], and he [Zeus] caught me by the foot and threw me from the magic threshold, and all day long I dropped helpless, and about sunset I landed in Lemnos, and there was not much life left in me. After that fall it was the Sintian men who took care of me." (Trans. Lattimore)

As mentioned before both versions were frequently mixed up, being basically doubles of eachother (either Hephaistos is born lame and is therefore cast out, or he's cast out and therefore is lamed), so sometimes he is raised as a child by the Sintians (e.g. Serv. ad. Eclog. 4.62, where he is cast out by Jupiter because Juno rejects him at birth, and so comes to fall on Lemnos).

3. Finally, there is a version where he is entrusted by Hera to the obscure Kedalion, a daimon who had his workshop on the island of Naxos. Hephaistos apprenticed and learnt to work bronze under his tutelage (Eustathius ad Homer, Il. 14.296a). Elsewhere Kedalion is an assistant in Hephaistos' workshop, who is given as a guide to the blind giant Orion so that, standing on his shoulders, he may lead him to the Sun and be healed (Serv. Aen. 10.763, Ps. Eratosthenes. Catast. fr. 32, Orion = Hes. Ast. fr 4, Hyg. Ast. 2.34.3, Sophocles also told this tale in a lost satyr play that bore Kedalion's name).

(An Attempted) Granblue Fantasy Timeline

Yeah.

~3,000,000,000 years ago: The Phoenix is born from the sun.

~2,900,000,000 years ago: The Phoenix becomes Laplace’s demon.

~??? years ago: The world is formed, and mortal civilization begins.

~70,000 years ago: A prosperous ancient civilization runs a deficit on soul matter. Abominations created by Wardant attack the world. Megumi becomes Robomi and gets stuck in a hole. Kenji develops mommy issues and becomes a computer.

~???? years ago: Otherworldly miasmas/beasts ruin the world, with a select few mortals able to escape to the moon.

~20,000 years ago: The dawn of lunarian civilization. First lunarian artifacts and ruins appear on the world. It is unconfirmed if these are from before the moon escape, or if they are from lunarian colonists returning to the surface.

~7,000 years ago: The Omnipotent comes to the world from another dimension (via lunarian interference?). The Omnipotent takes the remaining uncorrupted land and lifts it into the sky, and seals the surface under a barrier, forming the Crimson Horizon and the Skyrealm. The laws of physics change, with Wardant excluded from the Skyrealm. Shalem and Shahar are created. The ancient people officially become Otherworlders. The moon begins its war against an unspecified threat (the Crimson Horizon?). True dragons probably start existing.

~6,000 years ago: The Phoenix and the Omnipotent fight. Shalem gets put into a box, and Sahar goes into a coma for a few centuries. Farhara dies, to be reincarnated in 6000 years. Fenie goes zoom. After thirty years, Abramelin splits the omnipotent in two, creating the sky god and the Astral god. Islands split up, creating a fractured world. The Astral realm, along with all Astrals, is created.

~2,000 years ago: The War begins, with Astrals invading the Skyrealm. The first primal beasts are created, including Lucifer, the angels, and the origin beasts. Primals are assigned to islands to control/experiment on the mortal races. Cosmos was created in the Astral realm. Lucilius incites the fallen angel war, causing Sandalphon and the fallen angels to be put into a box, and causing Lucifer to kill Lucilius. Astaroth attempts a coup, gets killed by Lucifier, and Magus gets put into a box. Cagliostro invents alchemy, and gets put into a different box. Noa introduces airships to the world.

~??? years ago: The Astral god creates the girl in blue and the sky god creates the red dragon as a snackbox swap service.

~??? years ago: The Jorha are founded, and proceed to commit unethical science. The Revenant weapons are forged.

~??? years ago: Mikaboshi builds a big rock. Her and her daughter get put into a box.

~1,000 years ago: Ninetails is created, eats a bunch of foxes, and gets put into a box. The Cardinal Saints begin their mission to pacify the cardinal beasts.

~500 years ago: The last primal beasts are created. The Astrals decide to make high-power, high-independence angel-like primal beasts to fight in The War. Said primal beasts, including Enyo, predictably rebel against the Astrals. The War ends with almost every astral leaving the sky. Abramelin and the Diviners first meet. Baldr talks to Satyr and takes a nap. Erste regrets politically allying with the Astrals.

~??? years ago: The Inchoate World begins to form the Arcanum.

~??? years ago: Cosmos and Lucifer start having coffee brunches. Cosmos creates Geo and Zooey.

~300 years ago: The Diviners put Abramelin into a hole. Feendrache puts Malegant and the Valiant in a cold hole.

~100 years ago: Estarriola and Temperance explode a kingdom.

Between 100 and 0 years ago: The majority of mortal characters are born, and experience variably tragic backstories.

24 years ago: Farhara reincarnates as Sabrina.

~30ish years ago: Rein's sister is born, and gets kidnapped by the True King. Granjeet’s dad goes on an adventure with Rein, Rosetta, Walfrid, and Vyrn. Lyria is found by them, and hidden in Phantagrande.

~15 years ago: Granjeet is born, their mom Rein "vanishes", and their dad ditches them for Estalucia. Xing gets adopted by Granjeet’s dad after mass manslaughter.

~10 years ago: Granjeet gets a letter from dad.

~??? years ago: Lyria is found by Erste, and used as a test subject.

0 years ago: Katalina busts Lyria out of her box. All the events of gbf, gbf:versus, gbf: versus rising, and gbf:relink occur.

+400 years in the future: Yatima joins Omega-3.

+600 years in the future: Omega-3 becomes combat-ready.

+20,000 years in the future: Lunarian society rebuilds Diaspora and invades the Skyrealm.

+25,000 years in the future: Abramelin and Farhana reunite.

Unknown Placement (between 20,000 and 0 years ago): Yatima and Raybury meet, Yatmia founds the Society.

Hello! Here's the react!

ROs React to Someone Asking MC Out (Crushing and Selationship Stage)

Alceste

Crushing - Alceste is going to march right over and insert himself into the conversation. He's gonna be a lil annoying and pushy about it, but it'll get the person asking MC out away from MC, so he doesn't really care.

Relationship - He's go over to MC the same way and wrap his arm around their waist and just kiss them to leave them breathless. He'll then look up at the person, if they're still there, and raise an eyebrow questioningly!

Larisilla

Crushing - If looks could kill... She's glaring daggers at the person but won't interfere unless MC looks like they're in trouble. If she's in a really bad mood, she's butt into the conversation and challenge the person to a duel.

Relationship - She'll slide up to you and slip her arm around MC's waist/shoulders and just look at the person. If they still have balls to ask MC out, she's just gonna go "they're taken" and drag you away.

Dionys

Crushing - Dionys will seethe in silence. He might look calm and pleasant on the outside, but he's already pictured 30 ways to dispose of the person. He won't move from his spot unless MC looks like they need help.

Relationship - Dionys is a bit jealous, but is confident in MC. He might slip himself into the conversation to judge the person and then drop some pretty truthful but hurtful things about the person on them, if they don't leave.

Somnia

Crushing - She's in the corner with Dionys, but she's not really plotting the person's demise, but more worried about if MC likes the person. She'll watch them carefully before deciding whether or not to go over there.

Relationship - Her coming over is 50/50 and it depends on her mood. If she had a good day, she'll stay where she is. She trusts MC. If she had a bad day though, she'd go right on over and nicely, but bluntly, tell the person that MC's taken and to "get lost".

Enyo

Crushing - Enyo deadass probably doesn't even notice. Parties are so exciting for them, they're busy doing anything and everything else than watching MC. That said, if they do see it, they're going to interrogate MC later and be all nosy about it, but deny being interested in it!

Relationship - If Enyo sees, they're going over to MC and quite literally just drag them away from the person. If the person follows, Enyo might get a little testy and decide now is a good time for knife throwing practice, which MC will have to quick stop!

jing yuan

honestly, i can see him being amused at first.

you never really struggle with anything in the game – even the hardest boss battles won't get you and your team down.

so seeing you struggle like that with the new swarm disaster event, that's a rare sight and he just can't help but find your little fit of frustration kind of cute.

but when it gets out of hand, his amusement is quick to fade away. tears form in your eyes when you fail the challenge again and now the general gets worried.

"are you okay, y/n?" he asks as you exit the simulated universe. there is no playfulness in his voice, only worry.

you shake your head. "i don't know what i'm doing wrong."

jing yuan helps you through this tough event to the best of his abilities. he tries a little harder in battle, going past his own limits to get the job done. he gives strategic advice and coordinates the rest of your team alongside you, like a true general.

to him, it doesn't matter whether you win or lose, he's proud of you for not giving up immediately. he's there to catch you after another defeat and celebrates with you when you finally clear a new difficulty level!

blade

he definitely shares your frustration.

not a part of him is entertained by your struggles. if any, he's just as upset as you are. when the two of you work together, nothing ever goes wrong. then why can't you get past the swarm boss?

but even now, his soft spot for you resurfaces when you tear up in sheer frustration. another defeat. another failure. you just want to give up. to shut down your device and punch a wall. although blade is more than ready to commit a sin as well, he tries to keep his cool for you.

"let's try again," he growls, tightly gripping his blade. "i'll bring those bugs their demise."

every time you want to quit, he convinces you to go on, and blade keeps pushing his boundaries just to get you through another level.

defeat only fuels his fire, and he won't rest (and won't let you rest) until you clear another difficulty.

because he does everything for you.

dan heng (+ imbibitor lunae)

as a nameless in his human form he already tries his hardest for you. he knows you are frustrated and so is he, limited by the aforementioned human form.

he doesn't really show it, he doesn't complain. he just stays quiet and does his very best, urging you to move through the various panes with a silent nod.

dan heng hates seeing you struggle, especially since he knows you got through the game's previous content without issues. he's also quite confused, why is this so difficult?

okay, at some point you start noticing his frustration too, as he grows a little reckless during fights. there's anger in his usually solemn gaze as he goes on.

yet, regardless of his own frustration, he still consoles you after every defeat, pretending to be confident in winning at some point even though he isn't confident at all.

so when he gains access to his vidyadhara form, unlocking a newfound strength, he goes all in again, just for you – with newfound hope.

it actually goes better now, but as you reach the swarm it proves to be quite difficult still. but he convinces you to not give up, no matter how many attempts it takes.

when you finally clear a new difficulty level, you might even catch a faint smile. "you did well, y/n."

gepard landau

the captain of the silvermane guards always gets you through whatever the game throws at you. with his strong defensive abilities, he keeps your team shielded and alive in the hardest circumstances.

so he's slightly caught off-guard when your team keeps dying in the new event.

while he writes it off as an unfortunate coincidence after the first few defeats, he seriously starts doubting his capabilities when your team dies again. he doesn't show it but he's secretly afraid that you're disappointed in him for not keeping the team alive.

but his will never falters and every time you try again, he too tries harder and harder. even when you get so frustrated that you're about to tear up, he motivates you to go at it regardless because he wants to make it up to you.

"we got this, y/n," he speaks resolutely.

'giving up' isn't in his vocabulary, so he too pushes his own limits. but it pays off, because you make it past the swarm boss at some point and clear the difficulty level you had deemed impossible.

gepard is so relieved that he prove his worth again; he got you and your team through a difficult challenge, successfully fulfilling his duty.

I added lip paint and a hint of blush to my 1991 PC Samantha. Now she kinda looks yassified but I think it works for her!

While I normally think Pleasant Company items are better quality, it’s a bit of a pet peeve of mine that the dolls seem to lack color compared to Mattel dolls. I’m not sure if it’s because the paint has faded overtime, but I used my acrylic paints and an acrylic sealer. It ended up a bit bolder than expected like makeup but Sam looks pretty!
