Skyphos number two! Inspired by the very talented @hellenhighwater ‘s Minotaur sculpture, a painting by Flandrin, a sculpture by Paul Cabet, and a very handsome charolais bull from Google images.
When I first saw this I thought Athena was putting on lipstick and holding a pocket mirror but it’s actually Athena writing on a tablet with a stylus lmao
Did two quick black and red figure pottery inspired designs b/c I was bored.
The first one is an odyssey inspired design I’m using for a ceramic plaque (I’ve been making Greek pottery for an independent study project).
The second one is this owl design I discovered while looking up Athena pottery examples. I found like three or four pictures of skyphoi with this owl design and I just thought it was really cute 🤧 I have an aryballos with this pattern as well as a mini plaque just for fun.
✨ silly little owls painted on Attic cups from some Picene necropolis in Numana (AN), now held at the Marche National Archaeological Museum in Ancona, Italy ✨
There’s a show coming up, and I think I’m going to be able to eke this thing out in time to enter it!
You can probably see some lighter spots of the red; that is from where I scratched some away in order to neaten up some lines. They should even out once fired.
It’s actually really odd how Poseidon took no issue with Perseus killing Medusa and Cetus, like I’m 70% sure there was probably a myth out there about him taking revenge but it didn’t survive to the modern day bc of this pottery art:
It shows Poseidon rushing toward Medusa’s corpse with one of her sisters running towards him like “some invisible guy killed her go stop him!” And it looks like Athena is urging Perseus to run faster (hence why there is two of Perseus) and it got me thinking, is this why Perseus has the Invisibility helmet? It seems odd for him to have it considering that he killed Medusa while she slept, was it to avoid Poseidon’s wrath? Since Poseidon only started attacking Odysseus when his son Polyphemus told him his name?
So if all it takes to avoid Poseidon is to keep your identity secret, then how come he didn’t catch on when this random kid showed up out of nowhere, rescued Andromeda and killed Cetus with Medusa’s head? Idk maybe there’s something I’m missing.
They found this in Pompeii completely unscathed, but it freaked them out when they realized that this pot was capable of moving when nobody was looking at it.
I am making 365 new versions of Mickey Mouse for the public domain and releasing them under public domain all year long.

The quarrel over Achilles' arms (hydria, circa 520 BCE)
Black-figure depiction of Ajax and Odysseus fighting over which of them should be awarded (the now deceased) Achilles' weapons. Both are held back by fellow warriors as Agamemnon steps between them.
