#i’m literally a hopeless romantic but the thought of romance lately truly just makes me feel gross

truly my last relationship taught me so much. it also instilled in me some things i’m still unlearning. like, how most people won’t get mad if you accidentally fall asleep without saying goodnight (and not replying to messages, because i’m literally asleep), or freak out if you stop replying for like five minutes. like, i couldn’t do anything i enjoyed bc she’d be like ‘um, what fuck are you doing? why aren’t you answering me?!!!’ like relax, i’m literally just showering. it was truly a case of sitting still unless i wanted to upset her. and then i STILL somehow upset her and i never really knew why. but, hey, that relationship ended a long time ago, i should be fine now, right? 😐
#it’s literally been like five years and i still wake up sometimes like ‘oh god i didn’t say goodnight! oh god i didn’t reply back to that#person’s message!’ when said person doesn’t care one bit#it’s just cause that relationship was so crazy that it made ME crazy and i’m beginning to realise that yeah i still carry some shit from it#literally that relationship is the entire reason i’ve been single all this time and why i’m trying to be emotionally mature etc#bc that relationship ending gave me a smack around the head that said something needs to change’#bc the way i was before is the reason i was in that relationship and in that situation in the first place#and that relationship ending and trauma and shit separate from that made me get really romance repulsed for a while#still am sometimes tbh#pretty much permanently in a state of ‘yeah i need look after myself’ for the last five years#and idk when that would open up to me being in a new relationship#idk i really just need to not rush anything with anyone and just take things slow and see where they go#have fun in the meantime#bc my past few relationships have been really intense#especially the last one as i said#and i fully don’t have the time or energy for anything hardcore currently#so if there’s anyone at some point they must be prepared to wait for em and court me like we’re victorian lovers#you must wait three years untill we kiss for the first time bc i truly don’t know the timeframe for when i’d wanna do anything i’ll be#honest imaooooo#but yeah romance is a complicated subject for me#i’m literally a hopeless romantic but the thought of romance lately truly just makes me feel gross#like in theory yeah i wanna kiss someone but in actual practice i’m like get away from me!#idk i’m on the road to bulilding healthy relationships#romantic especially bc i really can’t go back to how i used to be#sorry to disappoint anyone imaoooo#but nah anyways people who want to get close to me and be my friend has to be cool with my boundaries i set up#and sometimes forget about even tho they’re my own boundaries bc i’m silly like that#could do casual stuff but i really don’t think i’m the type for that imao#and even that sets off the same alarms in my head so idk 🤷🏻‍♀️#gwen rambles#gwenposting

Yunho's POV
My genius plan was that I would become more powerful than Jongho himself. So powerful that he wouldn't even be capable of taking my soul. So powerful that he wouldn’t even dare to try. Little did I know that as I shared my idea with Seonghwa, a certain someone was conveniently listening. Little did I know how this giant mess I'd created will play out...
Once Seonghwa was reassured that I would be perfectly safe despite the deal I had made with Jongho, he left me to my own devices. No sooner had I teleported myself back to my lighthouse than Jongho appeared out of nowhere, visibly angry. But there was something else in his expression. Something I couldn't quite define. Not yet, at least.
"How much of it did you hear?" I asked, already prepared for the worst.
"All of it," Jongho scoffed.
"Regardless," I spoke confidently. "Even if you do know what I'm planning, you can't stop me. You already know how much potential I have. Or else, you wouldn't have agreed to this deal. I'm right, no?"
Jongho shook his head.
"Your silly little plan won't work, wizard."
"Really?" I smiled, because I knew my own abilities better than he did. I was absolutely certain I could beat him. "And why is that?" I inquired, out of curiosity. He didn't scare me. Just...intrigued me.
"Because I never intended to take your soul, you fool."
Now, that was something I didn't expect to hear.
Jongho had somehow managed to catch me unprepared.
"W-what do you mean?"
"You know why I'm stealing so many souls?" I was about to open my mouth but Jongho wasn't having it. "Ah-ah, just let me finish. I know what you think. I know what everyone thinks. But it's an act. Apparently, I was too good an actor and completely fooled everyone, didn't I? The reason I've been collecting souls is not because I want to be more powerful than the devil. It's because I don't have one myself."
"H-huh?" I whispered in confusion. "Jongho, I don't understand..."
He placed a finger on my lips and I felt compelled to just...listen. Hear him out.
"But ever since I met you, I've felt...different. Like I could be more than just a demon making deals. Like I could matter."
I was too shocked to say anything so I just stared at him, utterly dumbfounded. And then he continued:
"What good would taking your soul do when you're the very reason I might be growing a soul in the first place?"
"Are you saying what I think you're saying?" I had to make sure.
"I know it's fucking insane and you’re supposed to be my sworn enemy or whatever but—"
This time, I couldn't let him finish his sentence and interrupted him with my lips on his. To my absolute dismay, he was kissing me back with as much vigour as I was. As much vigour as he put into challenging me and getting on my nerves and frustrating the living hell out of me. As much vigour as I knew only he was capable of.
"I thought this was impossible," I mumbled against his lips once I broke away from the kiss.
"So did I. But do you want me to tell you how I know it's real?"
I nodded, not trusting myself to say anything else.
"Because when you look at me, I no longer feel the urge to torture you for eternity."
"I should feel flattered, I suppose," I joked.
"It's up to you how you feel, wizard," Jongho replied. "And up to me to continue making you feel this way."
"The terrifying Jongho — a hopeless romantic. Who would have thought?" I teased him relentlessly.
"It's not too late for me to change my mind and snatch your soul."
"You greedy little thing. My heart isn't good enough for you?"
"Your heart?" Jongho chuckled and wrapped his arms around my neck. "It's mine now."
☠️☠️☠️
Yeosang's POV
The more time I spent around Mingi, the more I could see how much he'd changed for the better. And how much he was about to continue changing. Despite everything that had gone down in the past, I was feeling incomprehensibly drawn to him. And I wanted to be there for him. I knew that it would take some time for the rest of the crew to get used to Mingi being out of his cell. But I was determined to give him a chance. And convince the rest of them, it was a chance worth taking. Especially my dear Soojin...
"Sangie, he literally kidnapped us and left us without water for a week!" she reasoned.
"I know. I'm not making any excuses for—"
"And he cut off your hand! Your hand, Yeosang!" she reminded me needlessly. As if I could forget.
"Like I said, I'm not going to justify Mingi's actions. All I'm asking is that you give him another chance. He's been showing remorse. And I truly believe that if the circumstances had been different, he wouldn't have behaved the way that he did."
Soojin sighed, unsure of what to say.
"People aren't born evil," I insisted. "Everyone makes choices. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. What matters is what we do to fix the bad ones."
"Yeosang...I really want to do as you say, but it just sounds so difficult, okay?"
"I'm literally a pirate, sweetheart," I rolled my eyes. "If you don't hold it against me, I don't see a problem. Mingi's not exactly the villain he's painted himself to be."
Soojin nodded thoughtfully.
"Alright. You have a point. I'll give him a chance. One chance and that's it. If he fucks up again, I'm taking him to the depths of the sea myself."
"I suppose that's fair," I shrugged. "You heard that, Mingi?"
"Loud and clear," he grinned, a couple of metres away from us.
"He was right there the whole time?!" Soojin hiss-whispered in disbelief. "This is so embarrassing."
"Oh, come on. Don't tell me you've chickened out and those were just empty threats," Mingi winked at her.
She physically shuddered and I couldn't help but laugh. So cute.
"Relax, Soojin. Mingi's our friend now. Aren't you?" I asked.
"If you want me to be," he scratched the back of his head a bit awkwardly.
"Come here, let's play cards," I suggested casually. "Loser gets to swim with the sharks."
"There are no sharks in this sea," Soojin pointed out confidently.
"Yeosang wasn't talking about actual sharks," Mingi correctly guessed. "He meant that I would have to go talk to Hongjoong and Seonghwa. Because, obviously, I'm terrible at cards and I would definitely lose the game. And these two are scarier than bloody sharks."
Soojin rolled her eyes.
"Pirates and their stupid way of talking."
"You get used to it," I playfully nudged her arm.
"There's no escape now."
"Let's skip the game," Mingi suggested. "I'll just go talk to the sharks right now and beg for mercy or whatever."
"We'll come with. Right, Soojin?" I offered.
"Like I have a choice," she groaned but I could tell that she was gradually warming up to the idea of letting Mingi stick around.
"Thanks, guys. I appreciate the moral support," Mingi blushed.
"I guess you could say...I'll be your right hand," I stared at the hook replacing my missing hand and snickered sarcastically. Mingi and Soojin were beyond mortified by my dark sense of humour. "Too soon?"
☠️☠️☠️
Hongjoong's POV
"I mean...we already had dealings with a demon and a wizard so I don't see how Mingi could pose a threat," I reasoned. "No offense, Mingi."
"None taken," he smiled.
"So, you're going to let him stay? Unguarded?" Seonghwa wanted to know.
"Let him stay — yes. Unguarded — no. If you're so insistent he's changed, you'll have to take full responsibility. You think you can handle that, Yeosang?" I posed the serious question.
"I've got this, Cap," Yeosang promised.
"I'll be around, too," Soojin vowed. "You don't have to worry, Cap."
I nodded in agreement. Seonghwa seemed to be on board with the idea. Honestly, after all the shit we'd been through with that demon, Mingi was the least of my concerns. But of course, I couldn't say that directly. So I had to play the "responsible leader worried for his crew" card. And apparently, I played it well.
"Wow, this went better than expected," I could hear Mingi whispering to Yeosang, as they were walking away. Seonghwa and I exchanged an amused look.
"Shh, we just caught him in a good mood," Yeosang explained carefully. "Be nice and he might let you stay for good."
"Guys, be quiet!" Soojin warned them. Clever mermaid, I told myself and grinned. Speaking of mermaids...
"Not so fast!" Y/N ordered them to stop. And so they did. Rightaway. Made me wonder who was the real Captain of this ship. Not that I minded her taking away some of my responsibilities. I even liked it.
"Yes?" Yeosang seemed kinda nervous.
"Make sure you treat my sister well. Both of you!" Y/N commanded them easily. "Or else...I'll have no problem letting the siren out to deal with you. And she's not someone you want to mess with. Ask Hongjoong."
The shock on my face was not at all exaggerated as I nodded to confirm her words.
"She'll be safe with us, Y/N," Yeosang made a pledge. "Right, Mingi?"
"Um, yeah, what he said."
"You don't sound very convincing," Y/N eyed him suspiciously.
Damn, I had to admit I was proud of her and how much she'd grown.
"Oh, let him go this time, will you?" I pulled her aside gently and she couldn't find it in herself to argue. Once Yeosang, Soojin and Mingi had taken their leave, she removed her "intimidating siren" mask and was back to her usual, gentle self I knew and loved.
"You guys think we made the right call?"
"It'll be fine," I was fairly certain. "If push comes to shove, Yunho will just help us out again, right?"
"As if he doesn't have enough problems with that demon," Y/N argued. "We can't continue using him for our needs."
"Yeah...about that," Seonghwa started.
☠️☠️☠️
Seonghwa's POV
As I was telling them about Yunho and Jongho's change in dynamics, Hongjoong and Y/N were too taken aback to react with anything else but by opening their mouths. Which was, to say the least, quite adorable of them.
"So...these two...?" Y/N asked as if to confirm what I'd just finished recounting.
"Mhm," I grinned.
"Wow," Hongjoong managed.
"I know."
"This is good news, yes? It means both Hongjoong and Yunho get to keep their souls," Y/N wanted to make sure it was indeed real.
"I mean, demons can be pretty unpredictable but judging from Yunho's happy expression when I last talked to him, I'm willing to be hopeful for once," I explained. "We've had enough trouble as it is, don't you think? We deserve something good to happen to us."
"Couldn't agree more," Hongjoong grabbed my hand and Y/N's. "But I get what she means. After all the dangers we've experienced, it just seems so unbelievable that we're finally safe."
"Too good to be true, eh?" Y/N sighed. "Let's enjoy this while we can."
"I think this one will last a bit longer," I smiled knowingly.
"Hey, don't jinx it," Hongjoong squeezed my hand softly.
"Just trust me, alright?" I looked at them both.
"I do."
"As do I."
"And I'm gonna catch you when you fall or when you're sinking," I murmured.
"I think I speak from experience when I say I'm the one more likely to save a pirate from drowning," Y/N poked fun at us.
"I was just trying to sound poetic," I pouted.
"And we appreciate the effort," Hongjoong reassured me. "But she's right."
"You two turning against me? Oh, how the tables have turned!" I announced dramatically.
"Don't pretend you don't like it," Y/N ran a hand through my hair and tilted her head towards Hongjoong. "He likes it, doesn't he, Cap?"
"I bet he does."
"Hey, Y/N. My eyes are up here," I reminded her.
"Oh, I know," she blinked, feigning innocence.
"Too bad I can't even be mad at you," I chuckled.
"Why be mad when you can be rad?" Hongjoong interjected.
"That was so terrible," I groaned. "You're lucky I love you."
"Both of us?" Y/N asked hopefully.
"Unfortunately," I admitted.
"Guess we'll have to work harder to turn that into a fortunately," Y/N teased. "Wait, my bad. I forgot you two already have a wholeass fortune in the form of a bunch of treasure chests."
"Is that why you like us?" Hongjoong teased. "Who knew mermaids could be golddiggers?"
"I'll show you a golddigger!" Y/N threatened and started chasing Hongjoong around the ship. They were so childish sometimes...
🧜‍♀️🧜‍♀️🧜‍♀️
Reader's POV
You could tell that you had a couple of more minutes left until your siren-like side rose to the surface so you decided to enjoy them. As you were watching the sun setting, you couldn't help but recall your very first memories of Seonghwa and Hongjoong. What started as a simple joke, Hongjoong throwing Seonghwa overboard, followed by you saving Seonghwa from a whirlpool, had turned into so much more. It was funny how life often surprised you in the most unexpected ways. How a few months ago, if anyone asked you about pirates (and humans, in general), you would have scoffed distastefully. If anyone asked Seonghwa about mermaids, he would have still been haunted by the loss of Ariel. If anyone asked Hongjoong, he would have said mermaids spelled nothing but danger. And now...Now, the three of you had become so different. And in a way, so similar. Forgetting all these labels that once used to define you and just finding happiness in each other. In the adventures you'd had together. In the shared feeling of being trusted, feeling known. And loved. It was even funnier how you didn't find it strange at all. On the contrary, it felt perfectly natural that you were here. Made perfect sense that you had a home with Seonghwa and Hongjoong. A former prince, a pirate king and a lost but now found mermaid. You wouldn't have it any other way.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" you said out loud, sensing Seonghwa's presence beside you.
"Yes, it is," Seonghwa replied, looking at you.
"I have to go soon."
"But you'll be back in the morning. As usual."
You simply smiled. It went without saying.
"I wish I could stay the night," you whispered longingly. "Fall asleep in your arms."
"You could. I know you'll be able to control your powers. I'm sure Hongjoong will agree with me."
"I probably could control them. But I don't mind going back to my home in the night. Even though...this is also my home. Does it make sense?"
"I believe it does," Seonghwa rubbed calming circles on your palm. "Just like how you have a human and mermaid self, you also have two homes."
You nodded.
"Exactly."
"In a way, I feel the same. Both you and Hongjoong are my homes."
You rested your forehead against his.
"And we will always be your homes, Hwa."
"Don't go," he murmured against your skin. "I don't want to be alone anymore. Every night."
"You're not alone anymore. You have Hongjoong. And me. And I will be back with the first light of day."
"Promise?"
"I promise you, Seonghwa. Even if the whole world ends, I will always find my way back to you."
The end

an absolutely massive Haikyuu!! fic rec pt. 1
I went through my entire ao3 history because I’m insane, AND here’s my favorites. (There’s not a lot of aus because I’m not a huge fan of them, and there’s no sad endings. I’m a hopeless romantic leave me alone. There is angst though! Lots)
Beginning with SakuAtsu (I’m a hoe for Atsumu):
Hide and seek, by badreputation (10k. E. canonverse)
It sure is a good thing Atsumu doesn't have a latex allergy
It’s just a fleeting infatuation. As long as he pushes through it he’ll manage. So what if nowadays there isn’t a night where he doesn’t dream of Sakusa pinning him down on his own bed, in the shower or make Atsumu go down on his knees in the hallway? Those are just pesky details.
Some Memories, We May Keep, by mika60 (31k. T. canonverse)
This is canon, fight me on it.
The missing panels, the missing games, the missing moments.
The them we never saw.
*Now complete! :)*
every action has an equal and opposite reaction, by akanemnida (10k. T. canonverse)
Miya Atsumu gets a modeling contract with Calvin Klein, which sets Kiyoomi's heart in motion.
(Or: Sakusa Kiyoomi realizes that the rules governing the universe are absolute rubbish at explaining matters of the heart.)
Ass-fingering as a prelude to relations of the emotional kind: a case study, by neverwere (2k. E. canonverse)
Fucking hilarious, the imagery is absolutely hilarious.
"Marry me, he thinks, as he comes around Sakusa's fingers and all over himself.
This. This is exactly why you don't let strangers or very attractive teammates finger you out of the blue.
Everyone knows that the ass is the shortest way to the heart."
Or
When it comes to sex, Atsumu has rules. Guidelines! SOPs! He swears they work, they've always worked.
Until they don't.
parallax error: angle of inclination, by min_mintobe (10k. T. canonverse)
But now there's the one person Atsumu'd promised himself never to touch. His eyes leave Atsumu breathless with guilt at seventeen, and he spends the next six years safe in the satisfaction of making things right.
Feelings, of the physical kind, and one kiss.
ft. competitive spirit, childishness, and late night conversations.
Atsumu POV.
autumn ends, but we remain, by wolfsbvne (5k. T. canonverse)
Author says in their ending notes that they're not an ‘author’, but methinks they should write more and pursue that career path because this was wonderful.
atsumu stares at his ceiling at 2am. he stares until he can make out designs in his popcorn ceiling. a cat there, an onigiri here, and then something that suspiciously looks like a mop of hair, triangle eyebrows, and oh those two bumps are moles right above what atsumu just mapped out as an eye.
(or, atsumu is in kind of in love. sakusa is maybe in like.)
I left a taste in your mouth, by emso (26k. E. bodyguard au)
Because obviously
Sakusa fixes him with a vague expression of something like distaste. There's a scathing edge to his tone when he speaks. "Contrary to what you seem to believe, not everyone who meets you is instantly dying to get into your pants, Miya."
"Lucky I don't really care right now what 'everyone' wants to do, then." Atsumu swivels his mug around on the tabletop a few times, and then brings it to his mouth to drain the last few dregs of his latte. Over the rim of his mug, he adds casually, "Just you."
Whoa hey Bodyguard Omi, I think Spoiled Rich Kid Tsumu might possibly have a teensy crush on you.
How do you know you're in love?, by spiritscript (12k. T. canonverse)
Pure art
“So, how did you know you were in love? How did it feel?” Atsumu felt nervous asking this, a slight wiggling in the pit of his stomach, unable to look at the man beside him who rolled his shoulders in an attempt to reset his posture. “I mean, you didn’t resonate with what I said, so, what is love to you Omi-kun?”
Atsumu thinks he must be in love with Hinata Shouyou and so asks the best person he knows to help him understand his feelings
 san'yo expressway, 6:17 pm, by yamabota (13k. T. canonverse)
Of violent forethoughts, and handheld car vacuums.
Atsumu tilts his head to watch a slice of orange light bend over the impassive planes of Sakusa’s face. He is absolutely, ruthlessly beautiful. It makes Atsumu want to punch something—put his foot through the windshield—scream, maybe.
Kiss him again, maybe.
They have 344 kilometers to figure this one out.
Different Kinds of Dysfunctional, by DeathBelle (Series, 5 works. T-E. Canonverse)
Honestly, I think this one is kind of famous amongst Sakuatsu readers but I can’t not include it. If I recall correctly, this is the fic that got me into Sakuastu, so thanks, DeathBelle. The characters are portrayed really well (i.e. Sakusa is disgusted and confused, and Atsumu is a little shit). You’ve got a good balance between conversations and descriptive thoughts and all-in-all it’s just a really good read.
Atsumu said into the heavy silence, “You can’t say you’ve never thought about it.”
"Thought about what?" said Sakusa.
Atsumu smiled to himself, smug. "You know."
"No, I don't."
"You know. Of course you’ve thought about it. There’s no reason to be ashamed, Omi-kun. I’m a real catch.”
Sakusa was appalled. "You're disgusting."
"You flatter me. I'm not judging you. I can't lie and say I haven't thought about it, too."
Sakusa shifted, slowly, to peer over his shoulder. He wasn’t scowling, but his expression was unreadable. “Please tell me you’re joking.”
Atsumu wasn't joking, and he was about to get more than he bargained for.
i'll do anything you say (if you say it with your hands), by liliapocalypse (7k words. T. canonverse):
Oh, god. This one was so cute. Super fluffy. Loved the metaphors and symbolism. Sometimes you just can’t say things out loud.
When a bad injury shocks the whole V. League, Sakusa finds himself paired with Atsumu for more rigorous assisted stretches before every training. Atsumu then finds himself writing random letters on Sakusa’s skin to soothe the spiker, forcing Sakusa to reevaluate how his touch aversion became an irresistible yearning for more, and how the boy with the annoying hair somehow brought that hunger to life.
Or, the fic where Atsumu mindlessly writes a confession on Sakusa’s back when he thought Sakusa wasn't paying attention. Sakusa always did.
mortality is found is the flesh of your sins, by novrik (10k. M. canonverse)
This is literally my favorite fic of all time. Not just of Sakuatsu, not even of the Haikyuu fandom. Ever. Favorite fic ever. Listen, I’m an atheist, but this fic took me on a religious experience that I haven't come down from yet. The symbolism had me actually shivering, and I had to put my phone down quite a few times. Just, oh wow, just read it. I’d like to share my favorite line; ‘And if Sakusa is Eve, if he takes a bite, what then? Perhaps, he is a little afraid of the knowledge he will gain’. My god, author, if you ever see this, this is not only a plea for you to continue writing, but also an offer of marriage. Your hand, author?
dickhead one, sakusa kiyoomi. dickhead two, miya atsumu. neither understand how to communicate.
Pray tell, why are you drawn to him?
Are you drawn to him in the way he looks beautiful even when crying?
When his eyes are red, shiny tears streaking down, lips quivering, is he beautiful?
sakuatsu domesticity simulator, by pseudoanalytics (75 words. T. canonverse)
75 words because it's actually a digital art simulator. An interactive fic! How frickin’ cool is that? The art is so beautiful and I love the plotline and ugh, just everything. Please read, or watch, or click around, yes. Good.
Update: artist created another interactive fic and of course it is wonderful. SunaOsa this time! https://newttxt.itch.io/cheesecake honestly just check out @newttxt their work is amazing and I love everything they do.
a vaguely interactive mixture of fic, art, and html, where you too can experience the inherent romance of a big fat jerk and a too-blunt jerk attempting intimacy
***
(this is the result of letting the sakuatsu brainworms really get to you...)
Pas De Deux, by hatsuna (19k words. T. Ballet/college au)
There's just something about prim, proper ballet Sakusa and human-benign-tumor Atsumu that makes my heart burst. Seriously gorgeous writing style, loved every second. By the same author who wrote ‘liminal spaces’ (which is also just perfect) so that should give you a good idea of the style.
The mystery athlete gives Kiyoomi a once over in the mirror. “Yer pretty tall,” he observes. The twang of an accent rasps low in his throat. His brazen eyes drift to Kiyoomi’s legs, and something like exhilaration glints gold in his gaze. “Good quads, too. Ya ever played volleyball?”
 Ah. So it’s volleyball.
“I’m a dancer. Ballet and contemporary, mostly.”
the affective presence of our black and white reruns, by kozumess (19k. E. canonverse)
Beautiful, classic misunderstandings, my heart actually physically ached at that one scene (you’ll know the scene when you come to it). Kiyoomi is so refreshingly relaxed(? Is that the right word to use? We all know Omi never truly relaxes).
but the want, it's always there, constant like the static playing on every television channel, present even when the station disconnects.
cut the conversation, just open your mouth, by meeksoo (E. 16k. canonverse)
Absolutely filthy...BUT WITH FEELINGS! Completely nails the Sakuatsu dynamic, and protective ‘Tsumu? Love it.
Sakusa opens the door. He always does.
They’re teammates first, barely even friends. But they hook up on the regular and it works. It’s simple, easy. But then a fan gets too close, Sakusa reacts, and Atsumu is swept up in how quickly things can get complicated.
__
As Atsumu palms himself over his briefs, still feeling off, he realizes it’s because he still wants it. Him. Sakusa. Even after already having him earlier.
He should probably feel self-conscious, mildly ashamed even, that he’s panting ‘Omi Omi’ into the dark beneath the steady thrum of the AC unit when Sakusa’s right down the hall, probably good for it if Atsumu ended up back at his door. Instead, he lays there, writhing and sweaty, alone in his hotel room bed thinking about Sakusa and touching himself.
Afterward, as cum begins to cool on his chest, Atsumu really can’t help but face the fact that things may be getting complicated.
the hands that beckon me to come, by Ellieb3an (4k. E. canonverse)
So hot, what the fuck!
The toss, the run, the spike-serve at the end of it all—Sakusa sees it happen in perfect clarity as if time has slowed and his vision narrows to the center where just Miya exists, all powerful muscle and extraordinary skill and that air of confidence.
Sakusa isn’t one of the best receivers in the league for no reason, so his body moves on muscle memory, forearms absorbing the sting of the hit. It’s not enough. But his eyes are still on Miya—on the way his shorts ride up his muscular thighs as he lands, on the bead of sweat dripping down his forehead, on the clench of his fist thrust into the air—when the ball ricochets out of bounds.

Atsumu stays late at practices to work on his new third serve, even when his frustration with it starts throwing off the rest of his game. Sakusa notices and starts hanging back to secretly watch him from the gym doors. He’s fascinated with Atsumu's determination... and more than a little turned on by it, too.

“I do actually.”
“What was that, dear?”

Ah, yes. A Pavloved sex life. A Pavloved LOVE life??
It's stupid. Atsumu isn't a romantic, no matter how many times he's imagined laying Sakusa out and finally really touching him.
So there's no explanation for why Atsumu is constantly stuck thinking about brushing his fingertips against the meat of Sakusa's palms or the prominent tendons in his freaky wrists.
There's no explanation for why doing dishes sets off a warm burn in his ribcage, or why when he smells disinfectant he inhales like he's walking past a bakery.
Yer doin' this to me, he thinks furiously, as Sakusa derails his thoughts with kisses that come more and more frequently now. Yer conditionin' me, and I can't stop it.

Works 1-3, I think follow a linear story, whereas the last two don't.
All sakuatsu works are just the angstiest, most miscommunication filled pieces of absolute gold and this one is no exception. Wow. These men are assholes and they bring out the worst in each other, but I’ll be damned if they’re not soulmates.

Novelesque (SakuAtsu)
Atsumu had always been a hopeless romantic. He always viewed love as beautiful and exciting despite having the worst luck in love. That's why he spends a lot of his time reading romantic novels. Sometimes, he'd imagine himself being the main character and pretend that he's the one receiving that type of love.
"Aren't you getting tired of reading romance novels?" Kiyoomi asks and takes a sip of his drink while staring at Atsumu.
Atsumu shakes his head and raises it to look at Kiyoomi with those love-struck eyes. Kiyoomi couldn't understand how Atsumu could look so in love while reading something fictional.
"It makes me feel loved, Omi. Why don't you try reading one? It looks like you need some love in your life," Atsumu says and dreamily looks at the passing people passing by the cafe.
"I don't need it," Kiyoomi says and rolls his eyes. He doesn't need to read a novel to feel love because he's sure that he's already in love.
Atsumu turns to him with a look of disbelief, "I honestly think you're one of the people who need it. You look like you don't have any romantic bone in your body,"
Maybe. Kiyoomi thinks because if he did, wouldn't Atsumu notice that he likes him?
"I don't need a book to make me feel like I'm in love," Kiyoomi starts and stares at his tea as he continues, "because I already am,"
Atsumu's jaw drops while staring at Kiyoomi, "Oh my, Kiyoomi! Why didn't you tell me?"
Kiyoomi gives him a quick glance, "you don't need to know,"
"You were just like Osamu when I asked him about who he likes," Atsumu says and leans on his chair with his arms crossed, "he told me I didn't have to know, but he came to me when he didn't know what to give Rin when he was going to ask him out,"
"Just be glad you got to help," Kiyoomi says and looks at Atsumu. He had this adorable pout on his lips, and Kiyoomi had to take a sip of his tea to keep himself from smiling.
"Yeah, but you know, sometimes when I see them, I can't help but feel jealous," Atsumu admits before leaning forward to take a fork of his cake.
"Why is that?" Kiyoomi asks, truly interested in Atsumu's feelings.
"Well, they're like the ones I read on novels minus the drama," Atsumu says with a chuckle, "they're sweet, understanding, and so in love. When I look at them, I can instantly tell that they're so in love with each other,"
Kiyoomi doesn't say anything.
"I want something just like that," Atsumu says with a soft look expression on his face. He looked like it was something he's been yearning for so long but just couldn't have.
"Why? Haven't you experienced it? You've dated so many people throughout the years. You could at least have experienced the love you want at least once," Kiyoomi says, hoping it didn't want to inquisitive.
Atsumu scoffs, "I don't have much luck in love, you know,"
Kiyoomi stares at Atsumu and notes how his expression seemed so sad.
"I've dated so many people, but I never felt the love that I want. I feel like I'm asking for too much," Atsumu says, "but I've been putting my everything in my previous relationships. I think I deserve to feel loved too. To feel wanted. I don't know. I just want to feel something genuine,"
"You'll find it soon,"
That night, Kiyoomi sits on his bed with copies of Atsumu's favorite novels. He wanted to make Atsumu feel everything he wanted to feel, even if Atsumu doesn't reciprocate his feelings at the end of all these, all that matters to him is for Atsumu to experience the novelesque love he's been craving for so long.
It took Kiyoomi a month to finish everything, but it was fine. At the end of it, he got everything he needs anyway.
Kiyoomi took a deep breath and walked inside the gym. He didn't bring anything that would be noticeable, just a few snacks and energy drinks in his bag, but just thinking about the attitude change is enough to make Kiyoomi feel anxious.
"God, please don't let him notice," Kiyoomi whispers under his breath as he walks inside. He was scanning the place to look for Atsumu, and when he spots him, he briskly walks towards him while calming himself.
"Act normal, Kiyoomi," He whispers, but none of this is normal.
"Good afternoon, Omi-kun," Atsumu greets upon Kiyoomi's arrival.
"Morning," Kiyoomi simply answers and places his bag beside Atsumu's water bottle.
"Aren't you going to keep that in the locker room?" Atsumu asks, pertaining to the bag sitting on the floor.
Kiyoomi shakes his head, "Nah,"
Atsumu shrugs, and they proceed with stretching. Kiyoomi offers to help Atsumu, and the latter accepts it with a wide smile.
Kiyoomi can feel his heart racing as he helps Atsumu. It's not the first time Atsumu he's helping Atsumu, but this is the first time he's helping him after planning on making moves.
Atsumu looks so beautiful while Kiyoomi was helping him stretch. He couldn't keep his eyes off Atsumu's face, and he hopes he isn't too obvious.
Training ends, and Atsumu sits on the bend, both parched and famished.
"You want some?" Kiyoomi asks and offers Atsumu a protein bar and a bottle of energy drink.
Atsumu furrows his brows but takes them, "since when did you start bringing these to training? You don't even eat protein bars, nor do you drink these," he says and raises the energy drink.
Kiyoomi eyes him, "stop asking questions and just take them," he says and leaves because he doesn't know if he could handle it if Atsumu asks another question.
Kiyoomi made it a habit to always give Atsumu something to eat or drink after training. It's been a month since he started it, and Atsumu stopped asking him questions.
Kiyoomi takes a look at his notes and nods when he reads the next one.
"Ride with me," Kiyoomi says as they walk out of the gym. It was already dark, the stars have glittered the sky, and the air was cold.
"Isn't my apartment far from yours?" Atsumu asks. Kiyoomi presses his lips together as he thinks of a lie, "I have something to pick up around your area, so I thought of driving you home,"
Atsumu nods, and they walk to his car in silence. Once they're on the way, Kiyoomi sparks a conversation, "why aren't you bringing your car to training?"
Atsumu laughs, "I'm scared of driving,"
Kiyoomi furrows his brow, "you used to enjoy driving,"
"Yeah, but one time when we went to Hyogo, and I was the one driving us to visit Inarizaki. 'Samu and I were on the way when I accidentally back up on our dog. I didn't know he followed us," Atsumu says and scrunched his nose, "I thought he'd survive if we brought him to the vet, but it was too late,"
"Condolence," Kiyoomi says because he didn't expect it.
"It's fine. It's been years," Atsumu says with a soft smile on his lips.
"But you're still scared," Kiyoomi says and throws him a side-eye.
"Yeah, but it's fine. I can survive without driving unless needed," Atsumu says.
Kiyoomi takes this as a chance to make an offer, "why don't I pick you up and drop you off?"
Atsumu chuckles, "it's fine. Commuting isn't as bad as you think it is,"
Kiyoomi scoffs, "don't lie,"
"I'm honest. Besides, it's out of the way,"
Kiyoomi shakes his head, "I'm picking you and dropping you off. Training starts around rush hour and ends after dark. What if something happens to you?"
"I can handle myself, Kiyoomi. I'm literally an athlete," Atsumu says and flexes his muscles, making Kiyoomi roll his eyes, but he couldn't hide that smile on his lips.
"A volleyball player, not a mixed martial arts player," Kiyoomi says. It's Atsumu's turn to roll his eyes at Kiyoomi, "then let me pay for dinner,"
Kiyoomi accidentally steps on the break making throwing them both forward, "God, Kiyoomi, if that's how you're going to drive, then the deal is off,"
"No, no," Kiyoomi says immediately, "I was just surprised by what you said,"
"With what? Me paying for dinner? Kiyoomi, it's the least I can do if you're going to go out of your way to pick me up and drop me off," Atsumu says.
Kiyoomi quietly nods and slowly starts driving once again, "okay,"
Kiyoomi didn't expect to reach the third one so fast. He's been staring at it for so long. He doesn't ask anyone, not even Motoya, to accompany him when he's going outside, so he doesn't know how to entertain someone when they're outside of the gym.
But Kiyoomi still reaches for his phone to ask Atsumu to accompany him to Akihabara. Kiyoomi can hear the excitement Atsumu was trying to conceal upon hearing the location, and Kiyoomi couldn't help but smile.
Asking Osamu was worth it.
Kiyoomi waited at the train station and saw Atsumu wave at him after texting him that he's already there.
"Have you been waiting long?" Atsumu asks, Kiyoomi shakes his head, and Atsumu just smiles, "thank goodness, I thought I was making you wait,"
"It's fine," Kiyoomi says and smiles, "you look handsome today," he says before quickly walking ahead to hide his blush.
They arrived at Akihabara and first visited Brioche Dorée to buys some Muffinoiserie because Kiyoomi didn't want Atsumu to roam around with an empty stomach.
They then visited the Kanda Myojin Shrine to pay their respects to the God of Fortune before going to Ahikabara Electric Town to play some games. Kiyoomi was bad at them, but he was happy to see Atsumu enjoying himself.
"I can't believe you lost every game, Omi," Atsumu says and laughs. Kiyoomi just rolls his eyes but was surprised when Atsumu pulls him into a purikura.
"I've always wanted to try one of these," Atsumu says before they started taking pictures. Kiyoomi doesn't know what he looks like while the photos were taken, but he's certain of one thing, and it's Atsumu's genuine smiles.
Kiyoomi takes a look at their photos and lets Atsumu roam around. He sees a photo with him staring at Atsumu, and it makes his breathing hitch. He was about to tear it when Atsumu came and took the photos.
"We look so good!" He beams, not noticing how Kiyoomi was staring at him in the last photo.
"We do," Kiyoomi says and smiles.
"Here," Atsumu says and gives him one of the strips while Atsumu keeps his, "I'll take care of these,"
Kiyoomi just smiles and lets Atsumu pull him away. They did so many things that day that Atsumu fell asleep on Kiyoomi's shoulder on the train ride home.
Kiyoomi walks Atsumu home, and once he's about to go inside, Atsumu says, "I had so much fun. Thank you, Kiyoomi. I'll see you at training tomorrow,"
"See you," Kiyoomi says and watches Atsumu go inside with his heart full.
Kiyoomi arrives at the fourth step, and it's the Ferris wheel. Kiyoomi had always thought of it as something cheesy, but now that Atsumu wants it, it doesn't seem to be so cheesy at all.
Kiyoomi had been asking Atsumu to casually go out with him in the past few weeks, so when he asked Atsumu to accompany him at the fair, Atsumu didn't mind.
They went there when the sun was already down and decided to play some games before walking to the Ferris wheel.
"Do you want something to eat?" Kiyoomi asks as they line up for it.
Atsumu shakes his head, "we can get that after the ride,"
Kiyoomi hates himself for thinking that Ferris wheel rides are cheesy. He used to wonder what was so wonderful about those and why couples always want to ride one. But now he knows it's because of the certain intimacy that only both of you could feel in the enclosed space.
And Kiyoomi prays to all the gods that Atsumu feels the same thing he's feeling in that exact moment.
"You know, I've always thought of riding the Ferris wheel with someone I like," Atsumu says all of a sudden. He wasn't looking at Kiyoomi, but he was looking outside where the city lights shine so brightly, "I've always thought that I'd come here with someone I was dating. But I'm happy that my first ride is with you. I'm glad it's you, Kiyoomi."
Atsumu turns to look at Kiyoomi as he utters the last sentence.
"I love you," Kiyoomi says. This isn't how the plan was supposed to go. Kiyoomi was supposed to propose after this Ferris wheel ride. He was supposed to propose after the perfect date, but the smile on Atsumu's face and the tears in his eyes, and the way Atsumu looked at him like he loves him was too much.
It was too much that Kiyoomi couldn't stop himself from uttering those three words he's been keeping all to himself for years, "I love you, Atsumu," he repeats.
Atsumu's tears finally fell after Kiyoomi's confession, "I thought you'd never say it," he whispers with his hands, "I was so scared that I just imagined your feelings for me,"
Kiyoomi bites his bottom lip, "You didn't imagine it. I was doing all these for you, Atsumu. I wanted you to feel the love you've always wanted, so I took it slow,"
"But you gave me more than what I want," Atsumu says and wipes his tears away, "you're too much, Kiyoomi."
Kiyoomi smiles, "You deserved all of it, Atsumu. You deserve to have all these for the love you've given to everyone else,"
"You won't ask me to give it to you this time,"
"I would be lying if I said I didn't," Kiyoomi says.
"I love you, Kiyoomi. Let me pour out all the love I have for you," Atsumu says and Kiyoomi nods, "Then let me give you the love you've always longed for," he says as he takes Atsumu's hand to kiss it.

“-and if you’ll just sign here, I can finalize that upgrade for you.”
The woman smiled at Remy as she accepted the pen he offered her. She looked tired, her entire appearance screaming ‘overworked mom’ even without the literally screaming (playfully, but still screaming) kids behind her. She definitely needed the vacation.
“I can’t thank you enough for this,” she said gratefully, quickly signing the paper Remy offered her.
“It’s no problem, ma’am,” Remy said, smiling politely as he took the paper and pen back, hitting a few keys on his computer as he did. “Just happy to make your stay as magical as possible. Here’s your keycard.”
The stressed mother accepted the keycard from Remy with another smile. “Thank you.” She reiterated the sentiment before convincing her children to give her their hands and heading off for the elevators, her wife following with the luggage. Remy smiled after them, briefly letting the last of the room change form sit unfinished on his screen.
“You’re going to get yourself fired for that eventually, you know.”
Remy’s smile only grew at the sound of the all-too-familiar voice. He turned back to his work then, enough of Roman in his peripheral for Remy to tell he was strutting his stuff as a friend of Flynn’s. “Ah, you know they love me too much for that.”
“More like they don’t look hard enough to catch all your illegal ‘on-the-mouse room upgrades.’” Roman corrected, leaning against the back of the receptionist desk. “Though if they ever do? You’re screwed.”
“Shush, I’mma be gay and doing crime til Disney falls.” Remy responded cheekily. “And speaking of people who are going to get themselves fired, shouldn’t you be over in the good ol’ Disneyland already?”
Roman shrugged. “Shift doesn’t start for another half an hour. I’ve got time.”
    “Time for what, exactly?”
Roman grinned at that. “Gossip, of course!”
Remy grinned now, too. “Well, if you’re looking for tales, a little birdy’s been keeping me updated on a blossoming relationship between one of the friends of Rapunzel and one of the friends of Snow White-”
“Oh, not that kind of gossip.” Roman interrupted, waving his hand dismissively. “I’m talking the good gossip- preferably about you and your boos.”
Remy scoffed, shaking his head as he hit the enter key and finished out the form. “Hard to gossip about those which I do not have, hun.”
Roman groaned, slumping against the desk and throwing his head back. “Oh, please, Remy, don’t tell me you’re still in denial.”
“Denial about what?” Remy asked, finally turning his full attention to Roman. “The fact that I’m single?”
“The fact that you have not one but TWO partners!” Roman answered, dramatically holding up two fingers. “Not only are you being a proper partner HOG you are refusing to admit as such.”
“Well if you’re just looking for someone to be the soul to your mate, handsome, I think I can hook you up.” Remy said teasingly, briefly lowering his sunglasses to wink at Roman.
Roman met the wink with a deadpan stare. “You’re a taken man.”
“Only if you make it so.”
“You can’t keep pretending your partners don’t exist.”
“I can if I don’t have any partners.” Remy told him, finally pushing his shades back over his eyes and giving up at his mock attempts to seduce Roman. “Now, of course, I have two very close friends with whom I do many things with, but given I’m not dating either of them, calling them my ‘partners’ seems a little much, don’t you?”
“I get it, I get it, I have good friends too.” Roman said, as if he were going along with what Remy was saying until he quickly added, “Except I’m not obviously DATING them!”
“You’re hopeless, princey, truly hopeless.” Remy said in response, smirking as he patted Roman’s cheek. “Ya gotta stop finding romance where it simply ain’t.”
“The only thing I am finding is the truth behind all the bullsh-”
    “Remy!”
Both Roman and Remy turned from each other, gazes moving to the entrance, where the voice had originated from. The owner of the voice was hurrying over to them, their blond curls pulled back into a loose ponytail, keeping their hair out of their face and allowing them to smile brightly at both Roman and Remy. They stopped in front of the receptionist's desk, taking a moment to catch their breath and straighten their relatively small red tie.
“Heya sunshine.” Remy greeted easily, smiling at Patton in a way that was a little too soft to be a proper smirk “May I ask what brings you here in the middle of your shift? You’re gonna get yourself fired.”
“‘Worth it for a chance to see you.” Patton told him sweetly, giggling just a bit and ignoring Roman’s expression of self-confirmation. “Buuuuuuuut I'm on lunch break. Just came over to ask what you wanted for dinner. I know the plan for tonight was take-out, but I just realized that we have all the ingredients to make lasagna- aside from the noodles, which we can pick up on our way home- so I thought it might be fun to make that tonight instead!”
“Sounds wonderful to me.” Remy answered. “We’re going to keep it a secret from Dee though, right?”
“Of course!” Patton agreed. He leaned over to stage whisper to Roman, “It’s his favorite.”
“Oh, you guys know each other’s favorite dinners, do you?” Roman asked, smiling in a knowing way and wiggling his eyebrows at Patton. Patton tilted their head to the side, clearly confused, while Remy answered casually,
“Of course! You can only live with someone for so long without picking up on what they like to eat. Dee’s favorite is lasagna. Patton’s favorite dinner- which is coincidentally their favorite breakfast, lunch, and dessert as well- is waffles. And mine, of course, is a nice big cup of espresso-”
“Don’t lie!” Patton cut him off, smiling as they leaned on the counter and ended up within an inch of Remy. “Your favorite dinner is chicken soup!”
“Remy hates soup.” Roman said, raising a suspicious eyebrow.
“Not chicken soup.” Patton confirmed, not looking away from Remy. “That’s his favorite, no matter what he says.”
“Mmm, nice try, Pat, but that’s not it.” Remy denied. Patton pouted at him then, and almost immediately Remy relented with, “My favorite dinner is your chicken soup. You’re the only one who knows how to make it right, hun.”
Patton giggled. “I make it just like anyone else would!” they insisted, though their smile brightened even as they spoke.
Remy’s smile grew as well as he leaned forwards just a bit, pressing his forehead against Patton’s. “Nah, honeypie, you got somethin’ all the other recipes don’t.”
    “And what’s that?” Patton asked.
“Loooooooove.” Remy answered, grinning broadly, seemingly happy to ignore how cheesy his answer was.
Patton didn’t mind the cheesiness. “You’re too much,” they said, too playfully to be chastising.
    “Better than being too little.”
Patton just grinned at that. “I have to go.”
“Alright, sweetheart.” Remy said, expression seemingly not changing, though a close observer (aka Roman) might have noticed his smile dip just the slightest. “See you at six?”
“Mhmm!” Patton confirmed with a hum. They pulled away from Remy, pressing a quick kiss to his forehead before they ran off, waving one last goodbye as they reached the doors before disappearing outside. Remy lazily waved his fingers after Patton, watching the doors a moment after Patton was through them before turning back to his computer and his work.
“Ready to admit you’re definitely dating at least one of your partners?”
“Nope,” Remy replied without missing a beat. “Though if you really want me to have a partner, you’re single… I’m single…” Remy waggled his eyebrows at Roman.
Roman ignored his advances. “The chemistry between you and Patton is so strong I’m surprised nothing’s exploded yet.”
    “That was weak.”
“Shush.” Roman waved his hand dismissively. “I mean, for the love of Apollo, they kissed you goodbye!”
Remy half-shrugged. “They do that with all their friends.”
“They didn’t give me a kiss.”
“They were in a rush.” Remy explained away. “But if you really want a kiss-”
“-I will get it from my darling friend of Rapunzel,” Roman finished for him, having leaned over to check the time on the bottom of Remy’s screen. “I got so distracted trying to get you to tell me the truth I lost track of time.”
“What truth?” Remy asked, tone light. “The one about us making a perfect couple?”
Roman smiled sweetly at him, as though Remy was naive. “Maybe in a universe where you didn’t literally live with your soulmates,” he said, patting Remy’s shoulder before he turned and headed towards the door. He raised his hand over his shoulder without turning back, half-waving at Remy as he added, “Call me when you’re done being in denial!”
Remy just let out a light huff of amusement, shaking his head and turning back to his work. Roman could say whatever he wanted, but the fact remained: Remy was (un)happily single and most certainly not dating his roommates.
Yeah, sure, maybe he could’ve mentioned that his ‘best friends’ were also his crushes, but, hey, it wasn’t like that was that important, right?
    ~~
Patton was staring intently at the floor. Well, more technically, they were staring intently at the mess on the floor and trying to convince themself they were supposed to be cleaning up said mess and not doing anything else with it.
The bell near the front of the store rang as the door swung open, but Patton ignored it. Plenty of people filtered in and out of the store. They did, however, pay attention when the sound of approaching footsteps got closer than the signs should have allowed.
“I’m sorry, this aisle is currently closed, if you don’t mind-” Patton started immediately, tone polite as they looked up, fully expecting to find an angry customer who refused to go over one extra aisle for whatever sweet treat they were looking for. They stopped when they saw who it was, polite-but-fake smile being replaced by a genuine one. “Oh, Virgil, hello there!”
Virgil smiled back, half-waving before he turned his focus to the floor, careful to step around the mix of glass shards and chocolate-covered balls of something as he came up next to Patton. “Busy day?”
Patton shrugged. “It was fine until someone didn’t put the jar fully back on the shelf. I’m just glad no one got hurt.”
Virgil nodded. “That’s good,” he agreed. “Waste of some perfectly good candy though.”
“It is,” Patton bemoaned, looking sadly at the mess. Virgil side-eyed them.
“Pat, you haven’t been considering eating the fallen candy, have you?”
“Maybe?” Patton tried, looking at Virgil only to find his expression completely disbelieving. They sighed. “Yes. It just looks so yummy! Even mixed in with all the glass! Because the glass sparkles and makes it kinda magical looking and it couldn’t hurt to have just one-”
Virgil put a hand on Patton’s shoulder, stopping them from bending down and grabbing one of the candies before they could move an inch. “All the candy here’s magical. Eat some of the candies that aren’t also glassy.”
“Mhmm,” Patton hummed in sad annoyance. “But it’s such a waste… I can stop it from being waste…”
“You could, but should you?” Virgil asked.
Patton groaned. “I shouldn’t,” they said. “But I want to…” They sighed, turning their gaze from the tempting mess to Virgil. “Distract me. Why are you here?”
“Other than to stop you from making poor dietary choices?” Virgil asked rhetorically before going on, “I’m avoiding Roman.”
“Avoiding him?” Patton repeated. “I thought you two were getting along. Don’t tell me he started another prank war-”
“No, he’s just being annoying,” Virgil answered. “He wouldn’t stop bothering me while I worked, because Remy apparently hadn’t been in the mood to entertain his gossip, thereby making me the person stuck listening to it. Guess Kev’ decided letting me walk it off for half an hour was better than me tearing a costume in frustration.”
Patton nodded as they moved to once more hold their broom, beginning to sweep up the mess as they said, “What was the gossip?”
Virgil leaned back on the shelf behind him, waving his hand pointlessly. “Oh, same old same old. Just talking about you and your partners, mostly how oblivious Remy is- which, I get it, Remy can be obtuse, but that doesn’t mean I want to hear about it all morning-”
“What?!” Patton cut him off, voice a higher pitch than they had intended, stopping halfway through a sweep to look at Virgil in disbelief and confusion. “My- what partners?!”
“...Remy and Drew. Duh,” Virgil said slowly, blinking at Patton as if they were missing something incredibly obvious. “You know. The people you live with. And are clearly dating. Those partners.”
Patton laughed, a weird hybrid sound of amusement and awkwardness. “I think you’re a little confused there, kiddo. I’m not dating Remy or Dee- they’re just my friends!”
“Yeah. Friends you’re dating,” Virgil said, raising an eyebrow at Patton. “Don’t tell me you thought I wouldn’t notice. It’s fairly obvious.”
“I don’t know how it can be obvious if it isn’t true.” Patton responded, going back to sweeping as they looked away from Virgil. “We’re just friends. At least I am, anyways.”
    “What does that mean?”
Patton briefly looked up from their work to look at Virgil instead. “Aw, shucks, Virge, you’ve seen how Remy and Dee look at each other. If anyone’s dating, it’s them.”
“And you?” Virgil pressed, prompting Patton to look down again at their work. “I’ve seen how Remy and Drew look at each other, but I’ve also seen how you look at them. They’re pretty similar looks, my dude.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Patton answered, even as their cheeks flushed a light shade of pink. They risked a glance at Virgil, only to find him looking at them disbelieving. “Okay, maybe I love them a little more than just as friends.” Continued disbelief. “A lot more! But that doesn’t mean we’re dating.”
“And why does them looking sweet at each other make them dating, but you doing the same just makes you just friends?”
“Because I think I’d know if I was dating them, silly.” Patton responded simply.
Before Patton could continue, or Virgil could speak up, they were interrupted by the sound of quickly approaching footsteps and the slight crunch of glass as the newcomer misstepped and stepped on the mess. “Well this looks… delightful.”
“Dee!” Patton said, dropping their broom against the shelf as they carefully (but still hurriedly) stepped around the mess to approach their roommate. He was dressed as a friend of Aladdin’s, wearing baggy pants and a raggedy shirt-vest combo, his small red hat carefully hiding his bun, presenting the illusion of him having short hair. Slight touches of make-up highlighted the scar running from beneath his left eye to the bottom of his jaw, Drew always happy to tell the very dramatic tale of how he got it in a sword fight (when the truth of the matter involved a very long story having to do with toast, ferrets, and the reason why he wasn’t allowed to use the ice machine anymore). “What’re you doing here?”
“Why, unhappy to see me?” Drew asked sarcastically, though he was smiling at Patton.
“Never!” Patton responded resolutely. They wobbled a bit as they got closer to Drew, almost stepping on a particularly ugly shard of glass, but Drew reached out and grabbed one of their hands before they could fall, stabilizing them and helping to lead them right up in front of him. Patton giggled at his help, not releasing his hand even once they were done moving. “Just curious. Shouldn’t you be at the wishing well?”
“Oh, I was,” Drew told them, free hand rising up to tuck a stray curl behind Patton’s ear. “But then I wished to see the loveliest face in the world and found myself here with you.”
Patton giggled again. “The wishing well must be broken if it didn’t just provide you with a mirror.”
A touch of pink coloured Drew’s cheeks at Patton’s words, and in the background Virgil turned from watching the two of them to stare blankly at the shelf across from him, as though it was a camera and he was in The Office.
“Trust me, angel, it made no error,” he said, despite his minor blush. “But to better answer your question, have you noticed how bright it is outside?”
“Of course I have,” Patton answered. “It must be warm out there.”
“It is warm,” Drew confirmed, sounding as if there was more he wasn’t saying but wanted Patton to pick up on anyways. “Some might even say it’s hot.”
“Just like you?”
Drew’s blush grew. “I think you’re missing the point.”
Patton’s smile turned a shade mischievous. “I’m not. I’m just waiting for you to admit to it.”
“Cruel, sweetpea, cruel.”
“Just admit it already!”
Drew sighed dramatically. “Alright! I fold! I admit that hydration in the face of the harsh sun is important.”
“Andddddd?”
Another sigh. “I admit that I forgot my water bottle, which I likely wouldn’t have done if I had simply used one of your sticky notes.”
“I even doodled a snake on your reminder!” Patton said, lightly hitting Drew’s chest. “It was cute AND helpful.”
“Just like you,” Drew commented, moving his hand from Patton’s hair to cup their cheek as they flushed. “And I’m sorry, dear, I really didn’t think I’d need it.”
“And yet, you’re here,” Patton teased lightly before turning towards Virgil, extending a hand. “Virgil, there should be a water bottle behind you- think you can hand it to me?”
Virgil did as he was asked, glancing behind him and finding that, yes, perched on the shelf was a metal water bottle covered in snake stickers. He grabbed it and turned back towards Patton, passing them the bottle. Patton took it and turned back to Drew, offering it to him.
“Oh, must I take it?” Drew asked, looking reproachfully at the bottle. “You’re so much nicer to hold.”
“Mmm, you need to get back to work before they catch you slacking,” Patton told him. “I’ll still be around to hold later.”
“Is that a promise?” Drew asked, even as he let his hand fall from Patton’s cheek to take his water bottle.
“Even better,” Patton answered, letting go of Drew’s hand so that they could loop their pinkies together instead. They raised their now joined hands so that they were in easy sight of Drew. “It’s a pinky promise.”
Drew smiled. “Good,” he said, bending his pinky a bit to squeeze Patton’s. “I’m holding you to it,” he punned before reluctantly stepping away, letting his and Patton’s pinkies remain linked until he was forced by distance to let go.
“So,” Virgil spoke up, slightly startling Patton, who had been waving at Drew until he walked out of sight. “You’re not dating them, you lied?”
“I didn’t lie!” Patton defended, moving back towards the broom as they spoke, once more careful to avoid the glass as they stepped. “I’m not dating him! Or Remy!”
“Oh, yeah, because calling each other petnames and trading compliments til you’re both blushing and not wanting to let go of each other and looking at each other like you’re the other’s world is really just ‘best friend’ behaviour,” Virgil said, voice thick with sarcasm.
“We’ve lived in the same apartment for months, Virgil, we’re close!” Patton said as they went back to sweeping. “That doesn’t make us partners.”
Virgil let out a breath. “I know, Pat, but you really should see the way you two were looking at each other. It sure as hell wasn’t plain-ol’ friendly.”
“Language.”
“Stop dodging the point.”
Patton stopped their work, turning to look at Virgil as they rested their chin on the broom handle. “I don’t know what point you think I’m dodging, kiddo. Dee- and Remy- are my friends. They’re dating each other, but I’m not dating them. It’s not that hard to understand.”
Virgil didn’t respond to that at first, instead just blinking slowly at Patton a few times. “I’m starting to understand why Roman was in such a mood,” he finally said as he pushed himself away from the shelves. “If Remy’s half as oblivious as you are, I’d be complaining too.”
“Oblivious about what?” Patton asked, confused. “They know who they’re dating and who they’re not.”
Virgil didn’t answer, instead just chuckling and shaking his head. “I should get back before Kevin decides to be less lenient about my wandering time. See you later, pine-on.”
“Bye, Virge!” Patton said cheerily. “And good pun!”
Virgil responded with a half salute behind his head as he wandered off. Patton watched him off as they resumed their sweeping, focusing on their work and not any of the interactions that had just occurred. Say what he would, Virgil was wrong- Patton’s relationship with Drew and Remy was strictly platonic, and they had no plans to mess with what the three of them did have (an amazing friendship) anytime soon.
~~
Drew dropped his bag before he collapsed against the wall, sliding down it halfway as he let out a huff. Though the day had been no longer than any other, the sun had been much more annoying than usual, and he was ready to be home and surrounded by not only air conditioning but also people he could stand. Absentmindedly he rubbed at the remains of make-up on his face, the only part of his costume he was still in since having changed out at the end of his shift.
“Are you suffering from heatstroke, or just bored?”
Drew looked up, finding Emile in front of him, smiling in amusement.
“A bit of both,” Drew answered truthfully. “Forgot my water bottle at home, though Pat had grabbed it for me at least. But neither their shift nor Remy’s is over for at least another fifteen minutes, so…”
“So I’m just someone to distract you until one of your partners can take over?” Emile asked, teasing.
“My partners in crimes, you mean?” Drew said. “Because I’ve told you before, Em, I really shouldn’t be talking about them here- you’re going to ruin our plan to invade ‘Beauty’s palace and get the treasure.”
“And what treasures are you going to find in there?”
“Hopefully, the key to a full hundred years of rest,” Drew told them before adding, “And gold. Mostly going for the gold.”
“Mhmm.” Emile hummed. “Happy to hear you’ve got your future set. Your criminal enterprises sound like they’re going to go over very smoothly. Now, as to your actual partners…”
“Do you think I’m cheating on my current criminal partners?” Drew asked, sounding offended. “With whom, another team? Emile, I thought you knew me better than that.”
“I think we both know I’m referring to your romantic partners.”
“Ah, yes.” Drew crossed his arms and leaned further back against the wall. “You’re referring to my roommates, who somewhere along the line you got confused as also being my romantic partners. They’re not very good at crime, you know.”
Emile grinned. “Not even good at stealing your heart?”
Drew just waved his hand dismissively. “Patton steals the heart of everyone they meet. Remy is not subtle at all when they go for the steal. Neither of them would make it a day in the world of crime.”
“But you admit that they’ve stolen your heart.”
“I admit they steal everybody’s heart.”
“But not like they’ve stolen yourssssss.”
Drew sighed, pulling his water bottle out of his bag and taking a sip of the water while he waited for Emile to stop. “Don’t be like Virgil and Roman, Emile. You’ve been given the precious gift of actually having a brain cell. Don’t waste it.”
“You can say whatever you want, Drew, but that doesn’t change the truth, even if you’d like to pretend it would,” Emile replied calmly, sounding smug. “We’ve all seen the way you three look at each other. You can’t lie your way out of love truer than that of Tiana, Naveen, and Charlotte’s.”
“Don’t have to lie to tell the truth,” Drew responded, returning his water bottle to its place in his bag. Before Emile could rebuke his words, the door that led outside of the first aid station opened, and two people walked in.
“Excuse me,” Emile said politely to Drew before they headed towards the people. After a brief moment of conversation, Emile walked further into the building with one of them while the other came over towards Drew.
Drew smiled when the newcomer was close enough for him to identify. “Hello, darling.”
Remy returned his smile, leaning against the wall and facing Drew. Remy was clearly off-shift, both costume and nametag removed, and was now sporting a sea-green bracelet. “Good evening, charming. Miss me?”
“Constantly,” Drew answered effortlessly. “I assume the same to be true of you?”
“I miss you every second you’re not in my presence more than the moon misses the sun,” Remy answered, maintaining veir composure for a moment before veir expression broke and ve laughed. “Like that one? I heard someone in the lobby tell it to their husband.”
“It is unbearably cheesy,” Drew told ver. “Though I’m sure also very sweet, if you mean it.”
“Good thing I mean it then,” Remy said jokingly. “People suck. I got yelled at twice today. I missed you and your not-yellingness.”
“Is that all you missed about me?” Drew asked, smile turning sly. “Because I know I miss you for more than just your sometimes-not-annoyingness…”
“Oh really?” Remy asked, shifting so that ve was facing Drew even more. “Well, I miss you for your not-yellingness, and for your looks- scar most certainly included, hun, it makes you look roguish- and for your mind, and your charisma, and, of course, your snark.”
    “You flatter me.”
“Look in a mirror, sugar, you make it easy,” Remy told him. “Now I’m dying to know why you missed me.”
“Oh, how could I not?” Drew asked rhetorically. “There’s your charm, as sarcastic as it may be, your humor, your refusal to stand down against idiots, and your sense of fashion- though I must confess, I consider it a sin to hide such dazzling eyes.”
“Compliment my charm when you’re the real charmer ‘round here- I see how it is,” Remy said playfully, smiling.
Drew returned the smile. “I’m just telling the truth.”
“Mhmm,” Remy hummed non-committedly, though veir smile didn’t drop. Ve reached forward, brushing some of Drew’s hair behind his ear before moving to run veir fingers through it. Drew leaned his head closer, allowing ver easier access to his hair as ve pulled it over just one of his shoulders. “Your hair’s a mess.”
“It’s been in a bun all day.” Drew explained, closing his eyes and focusing on the soft and calming feel of Remy brushing through his hair, occasionally scratching at his scalp. “It got tangled.”
“Too lazy to fix that problem yourself, sweetheart?”
“I like it better when you do,” Drew admitted.
Remy chuckled as ve continued, veir attention turning more towards gentle touches against Drew’s skin as ve worked. “I should braid your hair tonight. Might not tangle as quickly that way.”
“If we do that, we’ll need to stop at the store on the way home,” Drew said. “Our beloved sunbeam will want to put flowers in my hair, and I do not believe we have any at home.”
“We already needed to stop for some dinner fixin’s anyways,” Remy told him. “We’ll just add ‘flowers prettier than your face’ to the list, though I’m afraid if we go looking for those we’ll never find them.”
Before Drew could return the compliment, the sound of approaching steps stopped him. He opened his eyes just enough to see that they belonged to Emile, who was smiling broadly and just a touch satisfiedly at them, before he closed his eyes once more.
“Hey there, babe,” Remy greeted. “How you?”
“I’m peachy keen!” Emile answered enthusiastically. “Yourself?”
Drew didn’t need to see Remy’s face to know that ve was smirking. “I’ve got the prettiest man in the world melting into my touch, so I’d say I’m doing pretty swell.”
“Bold words from the most gorgeous being to ever grace this planet’s surface,” Drew countered, opening his eyes so he could return Remy’s smirk. “And I’m not ‘melting into your touch,’ I’m giving you easier access to the hair you so wish to tame.”
“Whatever you say, sugar.” Remy responded casually, right before ve ran veir hand through his hair again, stopping halfway through to press veir fingers against the base of his neck, rubbing just the slightest of circles into his skin, which was cheating, because ve knew perfectly well that was one of his weak points. The motion alone had Drew leaning closer towards Remy, letting out a small sigh that morphed into a huff halfway through.
“That’s cheating,” Drew said, trying to sound accusing but only succeeding in sounding tired and slightly whiny.
Remy laughed. “Don’t care, darling, not even a little.”
Drew hissed at ver, only earning himself another laugh.
“Well you two certainly seem happy,” Emile pointed out, the slightest hint of trickery in their tone.
“I’d like to think we are, yes,” Remy said.
“Not that it’s surprising,” Emile continued, failing to sound very innocent. “I’m sure anyone’d be happy spending time with one of their partners.”
“I’m sure they would,” Remy said neutrally. “Not sure what that has to do with anything right now-”
“They’re talking about my partners in crime.” Drew interrupted. “I told them earlier about my plan to raid Sleeping Beauty’s class and steal her secrets to a hundred years of sleep.”
“I see. Well I do hope you plan on sharing those secrets because goodness knows I could do with a good century of napping.”
“Goodness and me,” Drew agreed, reaching forward and pushing Remy’s sunglasses up a bit, frowning at how dark the bags under veir eyes were. “Why else would I steal the secrets if not for you?”
“Awwww, you care,” Remy cooed, tone a mix of goodheartedly mocking and sincere. “And what do you mean, ‘goodness and me’? Hun, you are goodness.”
“You’re sweet, but we both know that’s Pat.”
“I don’t see why it can’t be both of you.”
    “This is getting ridiculous!”
Drew and Remy turned towards Emile at their outburst, Remy tilting veir head to the side in confusion while Drew asked,
    “What is?”
Emile waved their hands at the roommates. “You two! You three! This!”
Remy and Drew glanced at each other before looking back at Emile. “This?” Remy asked.
“You’re so oblivious it puts the Scooby Gang’s obliviousness to Shaggy’s godhood to shame!” Emile said, thoroughly exasperated.
    “I’m sorry what was that-”
“I mean, look at you two!” Emile said, gesturing at where Remy’s hand was still running through Drew’s hair. “All you do is compliment each other and worry over each other and know exactly what to do to make the other melt into your touch!”
Drew shrugged. “So? We’re friends.”
“And we’ve lived together for months,” Remy added. “Kinda hard to not pick up stuff about each other.”
“This moved past friendship weeks ago,” Emile told them, crossing their arms. “You can pretend to be sly, but you aren’t.”
“We’re not pretending anything,” Drew replied, raising an eyebrow. “Are you alright, Em? No offense, you seem a little... agitated over this.”
Emile squinted at them. “You’d be agitated if you were me.”
“Huh. Vaguely ominous,” Remy commented idly, unperturbed by the conversation. “You should really talk to Roman though. He’s been having the same misconceptions about me and my roommates’ relationship. I’m sure you two lovelies can find the truth if you talk it out.”
“We’ve already found the truth,” Emile said confidently.
“If you say so,” Remy responded, reaching into veir pocket as ve spoke, pulling out veir phone and checking the time. “Patton’s shift should be over in a couple of minutes. Wanna go greet them?”
“The only sunshine I always want to see,” Drew answered. “Don’t tell them we’re going to braid my hair just yet, though, alright? I’d prefer to surprise them.”
Remy grinned. “Of course, hun.”
Drew returned the grin before shifting over so that he could pick his bag up, ignoring Remy’s protest at his hair moving out of playing-with range. “You do know that going to Patton requires moving, right?”
“I do, but that doesn’t mean I have to be happy about it.”
Drew chuckled as he straightened up, slinging his bag over his shoulder. “You can play more with my hair when we get home, starlight, don’t worry. Come on, let’s go get Pat.”
Remy pouted, but ve still lifted veir arm and allowed Drew to slot himself in against veir side as if it was the most normal thing in the world. Remy’s arm wrapped around the top of Drew’s shoulders, holding him close as they headed towards the doors.
“Have a goodnight, Em,” Drew called over his shoulder right before they left, door lightly thudding as it fell shut behind them.
Emile let out a little huff. “Night-night lovebirds,” they said, even though they knew the couple in question couldn’t hear them. They waited a moment after they left before pulling out their phone, flicking to the group chat they, Roman, and Virgil had lovingly nicknamed ‘operation Get These Gays Together’ (originally known as ‘operation if they don’t get together I’m going to shoot them and then myself’ when Virgil named it) and sending a quick but vital text.
Usually, Emile preferred the passive route. They preferred to push people towards the solution, help them subtly, let them figure it out for themselves with only a bit of their help.
But that method was driving Emile (and Roman and Virgil) insane. They had tried the easy, passive way.
It was time to be aggressive.
~~
The first thing Remy registered upon waking up was that they’d really rather not. The little bit of sun that made its way through their half-open eyelids was already too much and they were almost a hundred percent certain they still needed another five hours of sleep to be anything close to well-rested.
Therefore, immediately after opening their eyes, they shut them once more, rolling over and pushing their face into the surface beneath them to try and drown out all possible light. While this did solve the immediate problem of ‘too much light,’ it presented a new one for them to deal with- the fact that something close to him was warm and moving.
The discrepancy between where they remembered falling asleep last night- on the couch, alone- and where they must be now- somewhere big enough for more than one person to be sleeping, and apparently not alone anymore- was enough to convince Remy to open their eyes again. It was easier if only for the fact that the sun was now behind them, illuminating the sight in front of Remy instead of blinding them.
Remy was unsurprised to find the warm moving ‘thing’ was, in fact, their roommates- Drew curled up against Patton’s back, arms wrapped around their chest, one of Patton’s hands resting on top of Drew’s and their other sprawled out across the bed, almost touching Remy.
The sight made Remy smile. They reached out to lay one of their hands over Patton’s outstretched one, gently rubbing circles and nonsense patterns into their palm while they waited for them to wake up. While they would like to figure out how they ended up in bed instead of on the couch, and while they knew all three of them would eventually have to get up for work, they didn’t see the point in rushing anything. If they were already late for work, hurrying now wouldn’t change that, and Remy had decided long ago that there were few things in the world that mattered to them more than seeing both Drew and Patton rested, relaxed, and happy.
Slowly but surely, Patton began to wake up, shifting around in Drew’s grasp for a moment before their eyes fluttered open and they saw Remy. Upon seeing them, Patton smiled a sleepy but fond smile.
“Good morning, sweetie,” Patton greeted them, yawning partway through their sentence. They twisted their hand a bit so that they could hold Remy’s, beginning to rub circles into the back of Remy’s hand. “You look nice.”
Remy found it doubtful that they, in all their sweatpants, ratty t-shirt, and disheveled hair glory, were looking like anything more than a mess, but they were loath to reject any compliment that came from Patton.
“You look just as cute as always,” they returned, smile growing at Patton’s small giggle at their response. “I am, however, a little curious as to why I’m seeing your beauty right now.”
Patton’s brow furrowed in confusion for a moment before smoothing out as they realized what Remy was asking. “You fell asleep on the couch last night, right?”
“Last I recall, yes, and I’m sorry to say I don’t remember coming to… wherever this is.”
“It’s my room,” Patton answered. “I was cold, and I had pinky-promised Dee we could cuddle. We were goin’ to ask you to join, but you fell asleep while we were putting away the lasagna and we decided we didn’t want to risk waking you to move you. You’re such a light sleeper… and Dee said you hadn’t been sleeping as much recently.”
As Patton finished speaking, they reached out to brush a thumb underneath one of Remy’s eyes, as if they could erase the bags that were there.
Remy reached up with their free hand to catch Patton’s, gently pulling it away from their face and intertwining their fingers instead. “Don’t worry about me, sunshine, I’m fine. Just a few more sleepless nights than usual.”
Patton hummed, clearly not satisfied, but they didn’t say anymore on the topic. “I know I didn’t bring you in here,” they said instead, looking forlornly at the space roughly a foot long between them and Remy. “I wouldn’t have brought you in here for cuddles and then not cuddled you,” Patton explained, sounding melancholy.
In an attempt to at least partially console them, Remy scooted closer to Patton, narrowing the gap to only a few inches. They kept themself from moving all the way against them only because they knew exactly what would happen, knew Patton’s arms would wrap around them and hold them close, trapping them in the cuddle pile they’d have no will nor want to escape, and, as nice as it sounded to let reality drift away as they sank back into sleep so close to their two favorite people in the world, Remy knew they couldn’t, knew they had to be at least a little bit responsible and wake up and go to work and do more than just waste the day away holding each other.
Though damn if that wasn’t a tempting thought.
“So does that mean Dee moved me?” Remy asked.
“He must’ve,” Patton answered before frowning. “Though I don’t ever remember him getting up… here, I’ll just ask him.”
Patton turned over slightly, letting go of one of Remy’s hands so that they could gently shake Drew’s shoulder. “Dee? Dee, honey, do you think you could wake up for me? Please?”
In response, Drew half-groaned, half-yawned, and shifted so that his head was pressed into the crook of Patton’s neck, effectively hiding him from both his roommates and the sun. Patton giggled quietly at his action before they titled their head around and pressed a slightly awkward kiss to the top of Drew’s head. “I know you don’t want to, love, but you’ve gotta get up.”
Drew didn’t respond for a moment, but eventually he sighed, lazily lifting his head away from Patton’s shoulder. He returned Patton’s kiss atop their head before shifting his attention to Remy, blinking blearily as he focused on the third person in the bed.
“Mornin’ darling dearest Dee,” Remy greeted. “Sleep well?”
“Mhmm,” Drew hummed noncommittally, but from the way his arms tightened around Patton, holding them closer, Remy could guess he had slept very well curled up with Patton. “What’re you doin’ here?” he slurred, awake enough to realize Remy should still be out on the couch if not awake enough to speak properly.
“We were kinda hoping you could answer that one, hun,” Remy said. “Because I don’t remember coming in here, and Patton doesn’t remember moving me.”
Drew frowned. “I didn’t move you. Wanted you to sleep.”
“So I’ve heard,” Remy commented, now frowning themself. “So. If none of us put me in the bed, and none of us have any sleep walking and/or possession problems we haven’t told the others about…”
“How did you end up here?” Patton finished for them, completing the trifecta of frowns.
The unanswered question finally convinced Remy to sit up, squinting as they looked around the room for some explanation. It did appear to be Patton’s room, from the animal posters hung on every wall to the rainbow they had painted onto the light switch cover with nail polish, so it was unlikely they had all been kidnapped, which Remy was going to consider a good thing. Something did stand out to Remy, however.
“Hey, Pat, you haven’t put any random notes on your door recently, have you?”
Patton shook their head in confusion. “No. Why do you ask?”
Remy didn’t answer them immediately, instead sliding out of the bed and heading towards the door. Tapped to it was a folded note, ‘to the oblivious gays’ scrawled on the front of it. Remy pulled it off the door, unfolding it and quickly scanning the message inside. When they finished, they groaned.
“I’m disowning all of our friends.” Remy said, tossing the note to the side in annoyance as they grabbed the door handle, trying (and failing) to turn it. They groaned again. “Fuck.”
“Language.” Patton said automatically as Drew pushed their glasses onto their face for them, Patton blinking a few times as they stopped needing to squint at everything. “What is it?”
Remy ran a hand through their hair as they moved to the only window in the room, attempting to open it for a moment before deeming it a lost cause. They sighed and turned back towards the bed. “We’ve been locked in.”
This got both Patton and Drew to sit up, both looking more awake as they frowned at them. “What do you mean, we’ve been locked in?”
“Exactly what I said,” Remy replied, leaning back against the wall behind them. “Our most lovely friends have locked us all in a room together and apparently won’t let us out until we ‘confess’ or some bullsh- bullcrap, because this is 2012 and we’re a story on fanfic-dot-net.”
“Confess?” Patton repeated before realization dawned on their face. “Oh. I- Virgil was talking about that yesterday, but I didn’t think he actually- well I didn’t think he really meant anything by it.”
“Same with Emile,” Drew said. “They talk about it so often I just figured it was some sort of joke for them.”
“Roman was talking about it too,” Remy added unhappily. “He pointedly ignored all my advances as well, which was rude. I like to think my distractions are at least worth one returned flirt.”
A moment of silence stretched out between them before Drew sighed and said, “So they did this, huh.”
“That’s why I’m disowning them, yeah,” Remy informed him. “Also on the list of disownments is my cousin, because apparently he’s the one who gave them the key they used to break in here and set this whole mess up.”
“Logan’s not usually the type to go for this sort of thing,” Drew pointed out.
“He isn’t, but I think he’s still annoyed about that one time I stole all his Crofter’s.” Remy said. “Though now he’s indirectly keeping me from my coffee, so who’s the real monster here?”
“At least you’ve got us,” Drew offered.
Remy smiled at that, annoyed expression softening. “Yeah, that I do,” they agreed, pushing off of the wall and padding back over to the bed, joining the semi-circle and leaning against Patton’s side. Drew wrapped an arm around both Patton’s and Remy’s backs as soon as they were settled, holding the three of them together.
“So now what?” Patton asked after a moment of comfortable silence. “Should we call in to work sick?”
“The note said they’d cover it,” Remy answered with a scoff. “No clue how they plan to do that, but they’ve made it into a them-problem.”
“And when are they going to let us out?” Drew followed up. “Because we’re going to have to eat soon.”
“I have a bag of emergency cookies in the closet, if worse comes to worst,” Patton added.
“Of course you do,” Drew said, though he sounded only fond.
“They said they’ll swing by around lunch to free us and, I quote, ‘congratulate us on the proposals,’” Remy laughed. “Roman’s words, if you couldn’t guess.”
Drew chuckled. “And if we try to break out of our makeshift prison?”
“They’ve stolen our phones and tapped them to the door, so if we break it down, we risk breaking our phones.” Remy explained. “Logan also reminded us that glass is sharp and dangerous when broken so we shouldn’t even think about shattering the window.”
“So no breaking out,” Drew summed up. “Guess we really are stuck here ‘til they return.”
“Yep,” Remy agreed. They turned their head so that they could plant a kiss against the side of Patton’s head. “At least I’m stuck with y’all. Better be trapped with angels than free with demons.” Remy smiled when Patton blushed a shade of red that Remy thought just made them look even prettier.
“Well someone’s getting awfully poetic,” Drew quipped, though he was also blushing.
“It’s what happens when I don’t have my coffee,” Remy said offhandedly. “Deal with it.”
“Only if you accept that you yourself are also an angel.”
“Oh, rude, babe, real rude to ‘u-too’ my own compliment back at me.”
“If you want to make this easier on yourself, just accept it, my dear,” Drew advised. “I can wax just as poetic as you can, and will if I think I must.”
Remy sighed, holding out the sound for a moment before they folded. “Fiiiine, I’m an angel.” They leaned around Patton, getting close enough that they could press a kiss to Drew’s forehead. “But you’re still the prettier one.”
Drew gasped dramatically at that, but before he could respond, Patton sighed, sounding fond and vaguely melancholy. Remy pulled back from Drew just enough to look at Patton.
“Aw, our sunshine feeling left out?” Remy asked teasingly, kissing Patton’s forehead as well and wrapping their arms around Patton’s waist. “Don’t worry sweetheart, you’re just as pretty as Dee.”
“Oh, no, its not that, I promise!” Patton reassured them with a laugh. “You two are just so cute together, that’s all.”
“We’re all cute together,” Remy said, pressing a quick peck of a kiss to Patton’s chin. “Helps that we’re all cute.”
Patton laughed again. “No, I mean- together-together, you know? You’re a good couple.”
Remy and Drew reacted to that, both glancing at each other in confusion and uncertainty. “Couple as in two people, or…?” Drew asked.
Patton raised an eyebrow, now looking confused themself. “I mean, I guess that too, but I mean- well, I mean romantically.”
Another uncertain glance between the supposed ‘couple.’ Remy laughed awkwardly. “Hate to break it to ya, hun, but I think I’d know if I was dating such a cutie.”
“Same here,” Dee echoed.
“Oh. Oh!” Patton said, blushing red now in embarrassment. “I’m so sorry, you just- the way you act together, I- you’re so comfortable together-”
“We’re all comfortable together,” Drew pointed out, albeit quieter than he had been speaking a moment ago.
“I know, you just- I- oh, I’m so sorry!” Patton repeated, hiding their face in Drew’s shoulder. “I feel so silly,” they added, their voice now muffled.
Remy chuckled, reaching forward to card their fingers through Patton’s hair. They scooted a little closer to them as they scratched at their scalp as well. “Don’t worry about it, honey-love. Everybody makes mistakes.”
“No, it’s not that, I just…” Patton cut themself off before actually getting to their point, shaking their head a bit before they pressed their face even further into Drew’s shoulder.
“Oh, come now, beloved,” Drew coaxed, rolling his shoulders and trying to convince Patton to lift their head. “You don’t have to hide anything from us, much less your beautiful face or heavenly voice.”
“It’s silly,” Patton whined, just loud enough to be understood. Remy laughed gently, brushing their hair to the side so they could kiss the back of their neck.
“That’s okay. We’re not going to make fun of you or anything,” Remy assured them.
Drew leaned over and kissed the top of Patton’s head, pulling back only a little. “What’d you say, love? Can I see those pretty, pretty eyes?”
It took another moment of Remy playing with their hair and Drew sweet talking Patton before they were convinced, slowly lifting their head up just enough so that Drew could see their eyes. Drew smiled at them. “There you go. Isn’t this nicer?”
A little smile slipped onto Patton’s face. “Your eyes are much, much more gorgeous than the fabric of your shirt, yes.”
“I should hope so,” Drew replied, leaning his forehead against Patton’s. “Now, I’m sure both me and our lovely moonbeam are very curious as to what’s got you trying to hide from us.”
“Yeah, sugar, you’re not usually like this,” Remy added, though they didn’t sound worried, just sweet. “What’s got you feeling so silly and shy?”
Patton rested their cheek on Drew’s shoulder, looking between their roommates. “Promise you won’t hate me?”
“We could never,” Drew and Remy said at the same time.
Patton nodded, took a breath, squirmed a little in place, and finally said, “Y’know how I’ve never really said that you guys are together, even if I had no reason not to say it?”
“Uh… yes?” Remy answered, sounding slightly baffled by the question.
“Yeah, well… there was a reason for that.”
“...Okay?” Drew said, tone matching Remy’s.
“It’s because I didn’t really want to accept the fact that you two were together.”
Twin silence from Drew and Remy. Patton let out a little sigh, sounding more amused than annoyed.
“I didn’t like acknowledging the fact that you were both taken,” A pause to give their roommates a chance to finish for them; when neither of them spoke, Patton continued, “because I didn’t want to acknowledge the fact that you were both taken but neither of you were taken with me.”
Another pause, another stretch of silence as Drew and Remy each processed Patton’s words, the confessor themself once more hiding against Drew’s shoulder. Then- dawning understanding.
“Oh,” Remy said first, looking at Drew with wide eyes. “Oh. Patton, I-”
“It’s really okay if neither of you feel the same, really, I don’t even expect you too, we’re friends, and that’s what we’ve always said we were and always been, and that doesn’t need to change I just-” Patton laughed, slightly breathless as they tried to fit everything they wanted to say in only the space of a few seconds, “I just feel silly that I never even bothered to tell you guys because I thought you were dating, that’s all.”
It was quiet as Drew and Remy processed that, Drew looking at the bed as he thought while Remy looked off at the wall, clearly lost in their thoughts. It only took a moment for them to sort them, however.
“Hey, Patton?” Remy said, getting Patton to lift their head once more from Drew’s shoulder and look at them, Patton’s expression a mix of pained and hopeful. Remy reached forwards, cupping one of Patton’s cheeks with one of their hands, smiling a little stupidly as they did so. “Wanna hear a silly little secret of my own?”
Patton's eyes widened, suggesting that they knew exactly what the secret was, but they still said, in a quiet, almost awed voice, “What?”
Remy giggled, just a little, reaching out with their other hand as well and holding Patton’s face in both their hands as they answered, “I have a crush on both my roommates too,” they said in a mock-whisper, as if they were at a sleepover and they were all twelve. “I never told them because I thought they weren’t interested in me like that, but recently I’m starting to think I might be wro-”
Remy’s confession was cut off by Patton letting out a little squeal of excitement, pushing themself forward so that they could wrap their arms around Remy’s midsection, knocking them over and ending up with them both sprawled across the bed. Remy had just barely recovered from the action when Patton started peppering kisses across their face, going over their forehead and both their cheeks before they ended with a kiss on their lips, one that was brief but still sweet and loving and warm and undeniably Patton.
“You jerk.” Patton said, though there wasn’t a hint of heat in their tone as they laughed. “Why didn’t you tell me this three months ago?!”
“I had this whole friendship thing going on that I didn’t want to ruin!” Remy defended with a laugh of their own. “Though, if I had known that’d be your reaction, I’d have gone off and ruined our friendship long ago, sweetness.”
Patton’s smile broke into a grin and they kissed the tip of Remy’s nose, eliciting a quick but joyful giggle from them. “You’re forgiven for your slowness in telling me for how utterly perfect you are.”
“Why thank you, angel,” Remy said, pushing themself up just enough to give Patton a fast nose kiss as well. “But don’t you think we’re missing something- or, better put, someone- from this ‘perfect’?”
Patton’s eyes widened at the reminder. “Oh my gosh, you’re right!” they said before turning around to look at Drew. He was still sitting in the same spot he had been. It was clear he had been watching Patton and Remy, but upon them turning their attention to him, he seemed to suddenly find the entire rest of the room much more interesting to look at.
“Dee?” Patton said, forcing the aforementioned to turn his attention back to them or risk being rude to one of the people he was currently locked in a room with.
“Yes?” Drew asked, trying to sound aloof and neutral. He failed horribly, however, his voice coming out as something closer to mock-formal.
“Me and Remy have both made our confessions… do you have one of your own?” Patton asked, once more sounding hesitant.
When Drew didn’t respond instantly, Remy rushed to add, “It’s completely alright if you don’t, of course. No pressure whatsoever, we can still be friends, it’s just- well, not to sound like the people who locked us up in here in the first place, but I kinda feel like that’s not really what we should be.”
“I-” Drew started before cutting himself off, looking down as he fiddled with the hem of his shirt. “I do love you guys, really; I mean, who couldn’t after living with you for so long, you’re too incredible not to love, but… I don’t know how I love you.”
“...Care to elaborate?” Remy pushed after a minute stretched in silence.
Drew shifted in place. “I guess… we’ve spent our entire friendship doing everything a couple might do- spending time together, learning each other’s favorite things, getting stupidly domestic, literally sleeping together, cuddling, sharing little kisses, and I just… don’t know if I love you romantically or not.”
“Alright,” Patton said slowly, nodding their head before frowning. “I’m… not sure how to figure that out.”
“Me neither,” Remy admitted. “There must be something romantic we haven’t done with you, right?
Drew shrugged. “I don’t know. We’ve covered all of the bases, as far as I can tell. No wonder everyone thought we were dating…”
“Not all of them,” Patton said, pulling Drew out of his barely started musings. They smiled at him, softly and sweetly and just a bit shyly. “Dee?”
“...Yes?”
“Do you want to kiss us?”
“Kiss you- I already have kissed you, what do you…” Drew cut himself off as he realized what Patton meant, his cheeks quickly turning a crimson red.
Remy chuckled as they sat up, Patton shifting a bit to their side so that they could properly sit up. “Hate to put words in your mouth, sweetheart, but I’mma guess that means yes?”
“I… yeah, yeah it does,” Drew conceded, chuckling a little awkwardly. “That sounded awfully charming.”
“Everything you say is charming when you’re a charmer,” Patton responded, and Drew’s cheeks turned a shade darker as the awkwardness in his expression relaxed into something more akin to soft adoration.
Patton patted the bed directly in front of them and Remy. “Come over here, lovely.”
Drew did so willingly, pulling himself over so that he was once more part of the group. Patton smiled tenderly at him as he settled himself before reaching out and gently taking his face in their hands.
“Stop me if you need to, okay?” Patton said. Drew half-laughed, half-scoffed.
“I doubt I’ll want you to stop, much less need you to,” he told them, and Patton smiled wider at him before leaning in, their careful and loving hold on Drew’s face holding him still until their lips were connected.
The kiss was longer than Patton and Remy’s had been, more planned, but it was still just as welcoming and comfortable, as if this wasn’t their first kiss but instead their hundredth; somehow both oddly familiar and excitingly new.
Without even realizing it, Drew found himself leaning it, placing his hands on Patton’s waist to hold steady as he did so, more than happy to drown in the kiss as much as he could.
Patton pulled away when he was reaching the edge of breathlessness, smiling brightly at Drew even as they moved back, still holding his face. “How was that?”
“I love you,” Drew said as an answer, letting out a laugh in the form of a huff as he went on, “Oh, god be damned, Patton, I love you.”
“Language,” Patton chided lightly, though they both knew it meant nothing.
“Hey now,” Remy spoke up, drawing Drew and Patton’s attention. They were pouting, though amusement flashed in their eyes. “I’m feeling a little forgotten over here.”
“Forget you?” Drew asked, normally suave tone now simply breathless and incredulous. “I could never.”
“Then prove it,” Remy demanded, reaching out and making grabby hands at Drew despite the fact that he was barely two feet from them. Drew didn’t mind it, however, simply laughing at the display of affection. He gently took Patton’s hands off his cheeks, kissing the back of both of them (to the delight of Patton) before releasing them and closing the small gap between him and Remy.
“There you are,” Remy said, as if Drew had been hiding somewhere far off and not simply kissing their partner (their partner, not just his partner but Remy’s too) instead of Remy. “Do I get kisses now?”
Drew laughed. “Yes,” he said, not bothering to drag the moment out as he reached forwards, cupping one of Remy’s cheeks in his hand and pulling them closer. “You get kisses now.”
He kept to his promise as he kissed Remy, not holding it out for one long kiss like he and Patton had done but instead kissing them over and over and over again, quick little kisses that lasted seconds but still meant worlds to the both of them, that were still caring and inviting and loving even if they were brief. It worked better that way, Drew decided, especially when Remy evidently grew bored of just kissing his lips and moved on to covering the rest of his face with kisses instead.
“I’m starting to think I really am a jerk for not confessing anything sooner,” Remy said when they had, apparently, deemed Drew’s face properly kissed, now pulled back so that they could look Drew in the eyes as they grinned lopsidedly. “I’ve been severely neglecting giving you- and Patton- all the kisses you two deserve.”
“Not that that ever stopped you when we were friends,” Patton pointed out, leaning against Remy’s side and reaching out to hold one of Drew’s hands as well.
“That’s because even then I knew I was making a mistake,” Remy said, happily taking advantage of the fact that Patton was once more close to them to kiss their forehead.
“I just can’t believe the people who locked us up had it right,” Drew said, squeezing Patton’s hand as the hand he had been using to cup Remy’s cheek moved to hold one of Remy’s hands. “We really have been horribly oblivious, huh?”
Remy laughed. “I’d say that’s pretty accurate, yeah,” they agreed before smiling mischievously. “We’re not going to let them know that though, right?”
“Oh, goodness, of course not,” Drew responded. “Otherwise they might start thinking locking people up will always work, or, even worse, they might get an ego boost.”
“I think Roman will explode if that happens- his ego’s already big enough as is,” Patton added. Drew’s and Remy’s attention immediately turned to them, both looking shocked, to which Patton defended, “What? I can be petty towards our friends too!”
Drew chuckled as he quickly kissed Patton’s cheek. “That you can, dearheart, that you can.”
“It’s not like you’re wrong either,” Remy pointed out. “Really, letting Roman know this planned work might kill him. We’re just going to have to pretend it didn’t, for his sake.”
Patton and Drew both nodded as solemnly as they could given the circumstances. “I vote that we tell them this experience has really brought us closer together in our friendship instead,” Drew offered. “That way we can still be horribly obnoxious-” Drew paused to peck quick kisses to each of his partners’ noses to prove his point before continuing “-and also keep Roman and his ego safe.”
“A perfect plan,” Patton agreed. “Though… what do we do if they catch us calling each other partners?”
“We tell them how we decided we really felt like ‘friends’ no longer properly described how close our friendship was, so we decided to start using partners,” Remy answered immediately with a grin. “Really, we can turn anything into just another extent of our ‘friendship’ is we try hard enough. The real question is for how long do we do that? When do we give them their satisfaction?”
Drew hummed in thought for a moment before he said, a wicked smile racing his face as he spoke, “I’d say we’ll have to wait them out at least until we get married. We can tell them it’s for tax benefits.”
“We’re going to get married?!” Patton exclaimed, eyes shining at the thought.
“Well, I mean-” Drew floundered for a moment, clearly having gotten so caught up in how to best taunt their friends that he hadn’t even considered the implications of what he had said “-we’ve only just got together, but- if this lasts and we don’t regret anything, well-”
“We’re going to get married!” Patton repeated, this time with no question in their tone, tugging Drew closer to themself and pulling Remy closer as well so that they were all squished against each other. “We’re going to get married and we’re going to move out and find a better apartment with one huge bed- oh, or we could get a house with one big bed, and we’re going to adopt a dog- no, two dogs- no, ten dogs!- and-”
Drew gently stopped Patton’s rant by kissing them until they were breathless, resting his forehead against theirs when he finished. “And we’ll drive our friends absolutely insane with what a lovely life we’ll be living,” he added softly.
Remy moved to press their forehead against both of their partners’. “And we’ll be in love forever,” they added, which was an extraordinarily cheesy thing to say, but in the moment, it also felt like the right thing to say.
In fact, pressed against the two most important people in the world to them, still feeling giddy at everything that had happened in the span of barely fifteen minutes, Remy felt as if, for the first time in a long time, absolutely everything was just as it should be.
They were looking forward to getting used to that feeling.

Tom was dying. But everyone is, really. The thing is nobody really thinks about it, because we see it too far away, we see it as something that we will have to deal with later. It’s inevitable, simply inevitable. But what happens when you realize that it’s a problem you might have to face tomorrow morning?
She had seen him taking all of the pills the morning before, all the medicine. She wondered how many of those he had taken. She thought of the colours. Blue, grey, white. As if life was playing a trick on them.
And y/n was now thinking about it. Tom was alive, right now, but was he? Was he truly alive?
His life, she realized, had become a routine in a way that he was used to seeing people realizing it. How people seem to change from the fact they know that sure, he’s not going to live forever, but to when they really acknowledge it, when it hits them. To the point where they think that sure, they might not see him the very next day. She knew he was only waiting for that moment, honestly. If he were to arrive at the lighthouse, he wouldn’t even be mad. He had known about it, it was just a matter of time. Because he had seen it with everyone, with his mother, his father, his brothers, with Haz, with Lex, heck, even Jared had shown it. Everyone hits that low point sooner or later.
She had her arms crossed as she watched the sun going down, ignoring her phone ringing in her car.
Y/N needed this time by herself which truly, everyone does, at some point. But was she too crazy? Was she really that crazy for wanting so much more than summer?
She was. Undeniably crazy and selfish.
But there was some sort of comfort of it all. She was at the beach, she was away from her life, already. And maybe she could change it, she could transform it into that. Maybe her dreams weren’t just as big as she thought they would be.
Being in love was already part of her dream.
But she needed to mourn it.
Because just the days before she had seen it, she pictured herself moving to the cabin near the beach where she could paint the sunset, letting her skin be kissed by both the sunlight and Tom’s lips. And that dream didn’t sound too far away, but it was certainly impossible. How wicked of her to even dare to think about a future when she should be instead of enjoying the present?
The waves were coming for her, and the stars were illuminating her. She took a deep breath as she took in the view, what a beautiful night she was ignoring. The stars, the moon, the water. She picked up a stick and made her way to the waves.
With tears in her eyes, she drew him on the sand.
She then thought about it,  she wasn’t giving up, not yet. Even if there was not much to give, even if there was nothing to give up on yet.
The ocean washed him away from it. And that just didn’t help. But the ocean gave her an idea. She realized that the ocean would be there for her because it reminded her of him. There was something in the future because it eventually would come back. The ocean would drag her back to it, and maybe she didn’t have the power to heal him, but she had the power to keep him. She had the power to not cry, she had the power to look at the beautiful night.
And running away from him wouldn’t make any sense, she didn’t have to fall back without looking at what she really needed. And it was him. After everything, it was him.
Yes, Tom was dying. But so would her hope if she didn’t live with him. She had made that mistake before, looking forward so much that eventually, she fell backwards.
Start again. She had a second chance, but only if she took it. She had to hold on to it and forget it. Because maybe there was no medicine that could heal him, but he was the exact medicine that could bring her back to her life.
Because she knew it, he still was the same person that she met without knowing about it. He was still that guy with the beautiful smile, with the white t-shirt and with the amazing sense of humour. He was still a surfer. Tom was still a guy.
Blue, grey, white.
And he could fade away, like when her colours had faded away, or he could be erased by the water just like when she drew him. And she loved him, even after all the medicine. And she knew that if she didn’t say it now there would be no time to say it anymore. There was no point in crying. There truly was no point.
And sure, she had to wait for it. It was just a matter of time. But there was no point in crying now, the tears wouldn’t make him live longer. But she had the power to make him feel alive. Because they had no time.
She ran back to her blue jeep, her phone rang again. It was from Tom.
“Y/N hey- everything okay? Why weren’t you answering?”
“I love you,” she said unpromptly. She didn’t have time to explain it. She didn't even need him to answer back. Because, they had said they were in love, but they’d never said they loved each other. Maybe she had mentioned it, but never really blurted it out. She thought about the pills, blue, grey, white.
He stayed quiet but she knew he was probably blushing. “Wha-what?”
“I love you.”
He remained quiet again. “Where are you?” He pushed. She didn’t care if he wasn’t answering. “Are you okay?”
“Better than ever,” she said as she wiped a tear-off.
He took a deep breath.
“Where are you?”
“Somewhere.”
“Y/N--”
“The lighthouse.” She clicked her tongue.
“The… The lighthouse?” He asked.
“I know you wanted to bring me here,” she was embarrassed. “I’m sorry, I ruined the surprise.”
“Didn’t expect any less. I’ll---see you in a bit.”
She sighed.
He hung up. She wondered if she had done it wrong. But she didn’t care, she needed to say it. She had said before but it wasn’t the same. She didn't know whether to leave and look for him or stay.
She decided to stay, she’d wait for him, he said he was going to see her. Because whatever that was about to happen, she still had time to look back. How it had been full of laughs, how she had been trying to deny it since day one. How she had said that she only liked him. That no, she wasn’t in love with him. But that she couldn’t deny that she liked him. That she wanted to walk along the beach with him, holding his hand and looking up for crabs and shells.  That she wanted to go biking with him, racing to the abandoned house so then they could swing together. That she wanted to lay down in the sand and count the stars together.
And how it had all come to it. To how her dreams had come true, they walked along the beach, they had gone biking, and they had laid down on the sand to count the stars. And that she couldn’t deny it anymore, she loved him.
How simple her dreaming had been. How it had all started with ice cream that led to a guy with a bag of seashells, to a guy swinging her, to a guy with a very lame attempt to make her fall in love, with a boombox, with a dance and with him serenading her.
It was all a first kiss, the first feeling, it was just a guy who was meant to fall in love with a girl. It was, after all, a great summer romance that happened all too quickly. She recalled every single moment, from the terrible singing to the late nights watching him surf. How the water would fall from his hair and into his face. She remembered how gently he would trace the notes on the guitar. Everything. A smile was drawn back on her face.
Eventually, she heard a knock on her window, and then she was reminded of the day that she had realized that there was something about him. He was wearing a white t-shirt and a pair of old blue jeans. Like that day her Jeep had stopped working. How unpleasant it had been to see him, yet now it was all she wanted to see.
He had a smirk on his face, a tired one.
Y/n just rolled down the window. “Yes?”
“You’re kidding, right?”
She smiled. “What?”
“Get out,” he chuckled, as he stepped back watching her as she got down. “Okay, what’s all this about?” Tom sighed, closing the door. “Why have you been crying?”
“How did you-?”
Tom raised his eyebrow. “I’ve met you enough this summer. Why have you been crying?”
She looked down. “Stuff.”
Tom approached her, making her stumble until she was leaning against the car. “Y/N?”
“It’s nothing, really,” she said. “But you can kiss me until I’m not sad anymore.”
He chuckled, as he approached her even more. “Okay, so,” Tom placed his hands on her waist. “Have I told you you’re the most unexpected person I’ve ever met?”
“You’ve mentioned it, yeah,” she admitted as she was looking into his eyes. He cupped her face with a hand as he kept looking down at her.
He pecked her lips softly. “You’re such a hopeless romantic,” he continued, as he placed kisses all over her face and neck. “You probably know  every single romantic movie that’s ever been released.”
“And books, too,” she blushed, closing her eyes at his touch. He kept pecking her all over her neck but ended up on her lips again.
“You literally asked me to do something,” he looked up at her, as he pushed his hair back. “What did you call it?”
“Extraordinary?” She chuckled.
“Extraordinary,” he licked his lips, “only to get you to think  about going out with me.”
She chuckled as she tried to lean over again to his addicting lips, but he pulled away. “I’m sorry.”
“I’ve been trying to catch up with you, you know?” he admitted. “I danced with you under the moonlight,” he started, “I even did the whole prelude to a kiss, how horrible that is,” he continued with a sigh. “I looked for a boombox, I danced in the middle of the street to ‘Can’t take my eyes off of you’.”
She grinned, blushing.
“You’ve made a fool out of me,” He kissed her again.
She stared at him. This was how they were supposed to be, all summer. Not worrying about anything else, not crying. This. Just making out.
“You were one before meeting me, Tom.” She couldn’t stop blushing.
He rolled his eyes and clenched his jaw. “And I thought, oh, I should take her to the lighthouse, you know? It’s a romantic place, it might live up to her fantasy romantic life,” he continued. “She’ll like it there, maybe I’ll plan a picnic.”
She cupped his face and kissed him. “I’m sorry.”
He grinned. “And yet, you’re here, all alone, ruining the surprise to yourself, because why not, right?”
She kissed his cheek, and got out of his grip, laughing. “I’m sorry! I--”
“Oh, I’m not done, love,” he took her by the hand and pulled her back to his grip.
“What?” She looked at him.
“Not only did you ruin your surprise, but,” he had to take a deep breath and look up. “But I come here and find you crying.”
She looked down. “Yeah, uh-”
“And I think I know why.” He lifted her chin and she melted. The way he was staring into her eyes. The way that he was just incredible. His eyes, which for the first time didn’t look tired, were only there for her as if the actual masterpiece that the ocean with the stars were putting up for them wasn’t just as good as she was, as if it wasn’t even half as beautiful. He looked happy, and he looked soft. Sure, maybe his skin looked pale, and his lips were still dry, but he was just him, with the curls falling on his forehead and his freckles popping out, and with the wrinkles by his eyes just stretching each time he smiled. She didn’t want to ruin this moment, she didn’t want to get back to crying. Not bring up the elephant in the room. She wanted him to feel normal, she wanted to be normal. She wanted to enjoy this moment for what it truly was, not for what she had been suffering just minutes ago. Because she needed to make something beautiful out of it.
“Let’s not-” She tried to shut him up but he had that idea first, his lips were back on hers as his hands were trying to choose between her waist, her face or her whole body, he just had to pull her closer and closer, as his lips were just trying to figure out her taste, trying to memorize it. Needless to say, y/n had given in, he had transported her into another world. He pushed her again to the car, as she couldn’t get enough of him. She wasn’t sure what had gotten into him. But whatever was going on, she was loving it.
She cleared her throat, unsure of why she was feeling so embarrassed as soon as they pulled away, their hair messy and their lips were swollen.
“So, you’re so romantic, right?” he insisted and talked as if nothing had happened.
“Right,” she frowned.
Tom rolled his eyes. “Yet-” He had to stop and he finally let her go, she missed his touch. He threw his arms in the air, as he burst out with laughter.
“What?” she was feeling slightly confused.
He rubbed his face. “You’re the girl who’s been reading romance novels all summer.”
“Yes.”
“Your favourite movie moments,” He chuckled as he shook his head. “I can’t believe you.”
“What?”
“Your favourite movie moments are too epic, okay?” He pinched the bridge of his nose. “You have these-- dances, and risks, and just out of the box moments, a boombox, a guy just singing on a stadium, and a guy just--risking his life for this girl.”
Y/n blushed looking away. “Yes, alright, roast me! I’m a hopeless romantic!”
“Yet-” He chuckled. “I can’t believe you, y/n.” He started to walk in circles. “You see where I’m going with this, right?”
She shook her head. “I actually..don’t?”
“You ruined a perfect surprise,” he closed his eyes, laughing again.
“I already said I’m sorry!”
“And--” He lifted his finger. “I can’t believe this.”
Y/N bit her lip.
He walked over to her and cupped her face. “Y/N I need you to understand me.”
Y/N frowned. “This isn’t funny anymore.”
“Y/N, you, the most cliché girl I’ve ever met,” he grinned. “You, out of everyone I know, I never expected you to do this.”
Y/N crossed her arms. “What?”
“Y/N, you said ‘I love you’ for the first time over the phone.” And the biggest smile appeared on his face, so pleased to hear what he was saying.
“It’s not--” She gulped. “Not the first time.”
“You’ve used the word, but you’ve never-” It was Tom’s turn to blush now. He seemed so happy. “I just, I just think it’s fantastic.”
She blushed and joined him in his laughter, closing her eyes and rubbing her face. It did sound so out of character for her. Y/N realized it. She remembered something else, how Tom turns everything into gold. And that’s what he was doing right now. The Tom from the beginning of the summer was back.
“Well,” she covered her face. “I just… I just felt like saying  them, alright?” She bit her lip. Blue, grey, white. She didn’t have to explain the entire thinking process she had gone through. He didn’t need to know that she had been so sad before. She didn’t need to explain that she had barely any time to say it, because she didn’t want him to get sad. Because of the light, he was showing so much light right now, it was just surprisingly incredible. He was just like the waves he liked to surf, big and deep, and beautiful.
He grinned. “I won’t--Ah, oh, y/n.”
She chuckled. “I’m sorry,.”
“Don’t--don’t apologize, but I just—okay, wow. ”
There was something she had noticed. He didn’t say it back. Of course, she didn’t expect him to, but it was just something that kept coming to her mind.
She cleared her throat. Maybe it had been stupid.
“I didn’t mean to say that, sorry, I was being emotional,” she lied. “I don’t actually feel-uh. I was-I didn’t mean saying it.”
“You didn’t—“ Tom frowned.
“No, it’s too soon, right?” She coughed. “So,” she tried to get herself back on whatever track she was trying to get on. “So, uh, let’s go to the party.”
Tom frowned. “No, not yet.”
She frowned. “What?”
“I’ll… race you to the Carnival, alright?”
“The carnival.”
“Yeah, they won’t miss us at the party, we’ll catch up later, we still have time,” he assured her. She just quietly watched him.
“The carnival,” she repeated.
Tom grinned. “Yeah.”
She had literally told him she loved him and the surfer wanted to go to the carnival. He had to be kidding her.
But she didn’t complain, because then again, there were a lot of surprises Tom would pull. She didn't have time to even argue.
“I’ll see you there,” she said as she hopped back into her jeep.
He leaned from the window to kiss her, again.
“See you there.”
Blue, grey, white. She was not understanding just one bit of what was happening. But she followed him all the way to the Carnival just letting the confusion grow wider.
She didn't even put music on. She needed to concentrate? Because how in this world could she explain to herself the variety of emotions she had gone through the day. But she was sure of something, he just made everything better. She tried to convince herself that she didn’t care that he didn’t love her back. That was alright, sure it was too soon. Had it been too soon for her, as well?
But it couldn’t because love doesn’t mean the amount of time spent with someone, love means how everything is timeless with that someone. And in this case, love meant how little time they had left.
She didn’t want to think about that. So she started to think about his lips, the passion which he had kissed her with. Had it been a way to apologize that he didn’t feel it yet? Maybe all the medicine had taken away all of his ability to love.
Blue, grey, white. That had been the order.
But she didn’t want to think about that now.
She arrived at the carnival and parked beside him. He greeted her yet with another kiss, his lips so hungry for her.
Something was definitely up. Figuring out what was the problem.
“We’re here,” she said condescendingly after he pulled away.
He chuckled. “You don’t seem excited.”
She sighed and gave him a cheeky fake smile. “Sorry, it’s just kinda loud.”
Tom shrugged. “I guess.”
It hadn’t changed from the beginning of the summer, there were still a lot of stands, people selling clothes, food, girls taking pictures, guys drinking, and a lot of children yelling. It was still a mess, and y/n, was still not a fan of it. But it brought her back some new memories, like the day she met Tom.
“Let’s go for ice cream,” Tom suggested, taking her by the hand. She smiled. He was definitely trying to make it up to her for not saying it back. It was alright, y/n guessed.
While ordering it, Tom joked about smearing it all over her clothes again. She smashed some ice cream into his mouth.
“That was not necessary,” he snickered as he closed his eyes, “now you’ll have to take it away yourself I guess.”
And she did, she kissed away all the ice cream just before kissing him again. He laughed.
“Let’s go to the Ferris Wheel,” he suggested.
She didn’t complain.
“Like our first date,” she remembered.
“Did that one count?” He frowned. “We weren’t really...I mean.”
Y/N raised her eyebrows and nodded in agreement. “I didn’t like you.”
“I did like you,” Tom dug his hands into his pockets. “Wish we could have an anti-date again, so we can behave however we want again.”
“I am behaving the way I want,” she wrinkled her nose, “how in this world do you want to behave?”
Tom shrugged laughing. “Dunno.”
It was their turn to get to the Ferris Wheel, y/n climbed in first and made room for Tom, who, instead of climbing in, closed the cart door.
“What are you doing?” She asked but she was already mid-air. “Thomas!”
He laughed and waved goodbye to her. She furiously yelled something at him but then crossed her arms as she decided to forget about it, she was already on it anyway. She might as well enjoy it.
Except, she couldn’t, she stared down at him but didn’t see him anyway.  She leaned back, tapping her foot anxiously. Maybe that was his way of telling her that it had been too soon, by leaving her alone in that damned Ferris Wheel.
Blue, grey, white.
The Ferris Wheel stopped, and y/n blinked looking around, someone probably was getting in. She looked around at the beautiful scenery she was faced with, too bad she was enjoying it alone.  Then, the screams began. Little did she expect to see what she was seeing. She saw Tom, climbing up the Ferris Wheel trying to reach for her. He was bloody climbing the bloody Ferris Wheel. He was climbing it from the outside, being careful enough to reach her almost at the top.
She joined the screaming.
“Thomas! What are you doing?” She yelled at him.
“Get back down, dude!” The guy controlling the Ferris wheel said.
“I already paid you, no worries!” Tom assured him.
“You’re not freaking Spiderman” Someone from the crowd yelled.
“Tom!” Y/N yelled again, covering her eyes.
He reached her. “Hi,” he said casually as he was swinging right in front of her. The Ferris Wheel wasn’t that big but it sure as hell wasn’t any safe at all to do that.
She covered her eyes, again. “Tom what—get in—“ she screamed again. “What the hell are you doing?”
Some people started booing, too.
“Y/N, look me in the eyes, my hands are getting sweaty,” he said. She opened them up.
“What in this world do you think you’re doing?” She asked him, fearing for him. “This is not the notebook or some shit-”
“Do you love me?” He asked her.
“Tom, get in here!”
“Do you love me?”
“Get back down here! I’m calling the police!” The guy controlling it threatened.
“Answer fast, y/n, this is getting ugly,” Tom continued. “Do you love me?”
“Answer him! Man, what are you doing? Are you mental?” Someone in another cart yelled at them.
“I am!” Tom laughed. “I’m crazy about this woman.”
“You’re an asshole that’s what you are,” the guy yelled.
Tom grinned. “Do you love me?”
“What? What?” Y/N shook her head following her eyes.
“Y/N I love you!” He sang.
“You’re mental, Thomas get in here!” She ordered, between her screaming.
“Do you love me?” He insisted.
“I do! Now what the fuck is all of this? Get bloody in here!”
“You do what?” He insisted.
“I—what?” She was so flustered. “I love you! Okay? What the fuck—Tom!”
“I can’t hear you, love!”
I love you!” She yelled. “I LOVE YOU!”
“You love me?” He asked again, now letting a hand loose.
“Thomas!” She yelled at him.
The people started screaming, some other people were filming him.
“You love me?” He pushed, chuckling.
“Yes! I already told you, Tom! What the hell? I love you! I love you! I love you!”
He chuckled as he finally swung into her cart. She was shaking and he was bursting out in laughter.
“You’re an idiot!” She yelled as she pushed him away. She covered her face again as the Ferris Wheel started moving again.
“You love me,” he chuckled, pulling her close. “Sh, sh, sh, it’s okay, it’s okay, I’m fine.”
She looked at him and pushed him away again. “What the hell is wrong with you?”
He grinned as he cupped her cheek. “Probably everything.”
“You could’ve died!”
“But that’s more like you, you know?” He said leaning over to her, she was pushing out of his way, slapping away his hands. “Y/N, hey, hey, hey, look at me,” he was still laughing, taking her hands in his as he tried to calm her down with a grin.
“I hate you,” she stated looking into his eyes.
“No, you love me,” he smirked. “And hell, so do I because I wouldn’t have done that very stupid thing if I didn’t love you as much as I do.”
She pouted as she felt her heart beating even faster. She was shaking too much, but now she didn’t know if the reason was that she witnessed her stupid boyfriend risking her life or if it was the fact that her same stupid boyfriend had told her he loved her, too.
“What was that?” She asked him.
He chuckled. “I realized that I tried two out of three of your favourite scenes,” he explained. “And okay, I’m sorry but knowing you I was kind of disappointed that you said ‘I love you’ over the phone, after all the amazing stuff we’ve been through? You chose the most vanilla and unexciting way to say it.”
She was so offended. “Oh, I’m sorry that I just blurted out my feelings that way without risking my fucking life.”
“Well, so you did mean it,” he smirked.
“Yes, I didn’t have to climb a bloody Ferris wheel to say it!” She frowned.
Tom grinned as he wrapped an arm around her. “Well, I did, I had to be that extra only to say I love you.”
“You love me?” She whispered.
Tom laughed. “You really think I would’ve climbed a bloody Ferris Wheel if I didn’t love you?”
“Well, you’re dumb,” she stated.
“I am whatever you want me to be.”
He pulled her closer and smashed his lips against hers, his hands running through her hair. He couldn’t stop smiling as they both tried to take control of the situation, Tom being soft and Y/N angrily kissing him because she couldn’t stand him at that moment, but god did they boy make her feel everything.
They suddenly forgot they were at the Ferris Wheel, as she had climbed to his lap to get comfortable while kissing him. They didn’t even notice they had stopped and that people were watching them.  They were back on the ground now.
The guy cleared his throat and he was accompanied by a security guy.
The steamy couple had to pull away, and uncomfortably look at them.
“Hi officer,” Tom greeted them, as y/n got off his lap.
“Care to explain your little manoeuvre over there?” He asked him.
Tom chuckled. “Uh, you see that’s-that’s a funny story,” he said, standing up.  He motioned for y/n to stand up.
“Really? I want to hear it,” the officer said.
Tom gulped. “Well, uh--you see,” he chuckled, taking y/n’s by the hand. She knew what he was about to do. “We are dating.”
“That doesn’t explain anything.”
“It does because we were uh,” Tom gulped. He looked at her and she nodded. “About to leave, bye!”
And they sprinted the hell out of the place, laughing and screaming as both men were trying to follow them, but the adrenaline that was pushing the couple made them go way faster.
“Come back here!” The officer ordered.
Y/N and Tom ran through the stands, through the rides and through all the people, and eventually, they ran to the parking lot, losing them through the clouds. They had to stop there so they could both catch their breath.
Tom coughed as he closed his eyes as they hid behind y/n’s blue jeep.
“Wow--okay, that was--fun,” she grinned but then as Tom kept coughing. She scowled as she patted his back. “You’re-you’re okay?”
He looked up at her as he took another deep breath. “Yeah, yeah.”
She bit her lip, unsure of what they were supposed to do. He gave her a reassuring smile as his fingers pushed away the hair from her face.
“I’m okay,” he kissed her temple, gently.
“You’re an idiot,” she grinned. “I love you, but you’re an idiot.”
He connected his lips with hers, hungry for her, as his lips traced around her lips and her neck, and as his hands were colouring her again.
“I love you,” he’d repeat over and over as his lips were still glued to her, placing wet kisses on her and as his hands were going from her back to her legs, resting on her ass.
“Tom,” she gently moaned his name, as he kissed her hungrily, slowly biting her neck. “We have a party to get to,” but he didn’t stop, he just continued to press his body against her.
“This is a public space,” she reminded him. “People could see us.”
He stopped as he smirked. “I want you.”
And there was a look in his eyes that she had never seen before, so gentle but so rough at the same time. And she agreed with him, she wanted him too. But it was too risky, and she guessed that’s what made it even more interesting.
He kissed her roughly again as he slammed her into the blue jeep again, he took him by her thighs as she wrapped herself around him The friction from their moving was making her all flustered, but he kept making his path, from her lips to her neck to her sweet spot on her collarbone.
“Tom, this is not-” She couldn’t keep talking. But suddenly an idea popped into her mind. “Wait, wait, wait,” she was panting already.
“What?” He had to stop to look up at her. She dug into her purse and took out her car keys. The party could wait.

WELL it was an easy read and I finished the book already. I gotta do a classic Dani Vents About a Story post that will include significant spoilers, so be careful if you are reading/want to read The Mercies by Kiran Millwood Hargraves. I’m about to bitch about it a lot, but overall it was an interesting book that I’d still (mostly) recommend if you have an interest in historical fiction surrounding the Norwegian witch trials.
Most of it was really good, although a few theme threads and character arcs completely fell apart in the final act. I knew it was going to be dark-- again, 17th century witch trial shit-- but the actual “murder my favorite characters” bit thankfully didn’t begin until pretty late in the story, which lets the focus remain more on the lives of the women vs their horrific deaths. The author does a (mostly) great job at creating interesting characters you fall in love with, and succeeded immensely at bringing the landscape and village of Vardo to life.
BUT
IN THE LAST LITERAL FOUR PAGES, THE NARRATIVE TOOK ALL THE MEANING THAT THE PROTAGANISTS HAD CREATED OUT OF THEIR HARDSHIPS AND THREW IT OVER A CLIFF (LITERALLY! & EACH USE OF THIS WORD HERE HAS BEEN THE PROPER USE. although i guess a fictional event cannot be truly ‘literal’ BUT WHATEVER I AM NOT GETTING LOST IN THE WEEDS WITH PEDANTICS). I am so fucking mad, and it serves as a reminder to why I typically don’t read/watch many period pieces these days, unless it is a period setting in a fantasy/sci fi world. So many people think that in order to bE rEaLiStIc when writing about periods in history, you simply MUST be as grimdark as possible, especially with conclusions, but I find that perspective boring and uncreative as hell. Bitch it’s already fiction! it’s already lies! you are god in the universe you write, have some courage and don’t concede to established tropes that center on garish suffering to define the experiences of historically (& contemporaneously) marginalized people! At least in a medieval-set fantasy story, you get the vibes of the historical setting, but also your friends can swoop by on a dragon and rescue the innocent pants-wearing fisherwoman who is about to be burned alive by the racist woman-hating church.
Now don’t get me wrong, I love a story with a messy & unhappy ending. I even love an occasional grimdark story! But as I get older, I see & feel more the evils which inspired these historical events and how they still burden our world today, and I do not enjoy spending my free time reading/watching movies that are centered on suffering for suffering’s sake-- if I want a story about senseless violence & the underdogs who never win, I will just turn on the fucking news. SO, for me, the dark stories I do enjoy cannot just be traumaporn in a difference shell, the darkness has. to. make. sense. You can’t spend 300 pages on a woman overcoming her grief of losing her brother/father/fiancé/half her village & learning how to be a #StrongIndependantWoman, then have her just kill herself on the last page. It just isn’t narratively good, it just isn’t! And to be clear, the author could have gone WAYYYYYYYY darker in many places throughout the book & did not even come close to going full grimdark. I think overall she greatly succeeded at balancing hope & hopelessness. It was done so well in fact that I was lulled into a false sense of security that maybe just maybe there might be a way out for our ladies, a conclusion that didn’t end with the kind of complete misery that historic fiction tends to skew towards. But there is this overwhelming sense in the final few pages that, probably due to the aforementioned loyalty to perceived “historical accuracy”, she hadn’t included enough suffering (even though there is PLENTY of tragedy to go around by that point) & she didn’t know how to finish the story. So when in doubt, kill 👏 those 👏 gays 👏 (although we don’t know the fate of the other woman, who has entire chapters given from her perspective, but Meren just says bye & we never hear about Ursa again 😤)
Which brings us to, yeah, it did have gay shit like I thought, and up until the garbage of the last four pages, it was a very touching romance. But it too concluded in a way that is only satisfying if you squint, and adds to the inconsistencies that I mentioned above. I’ve never in my life said this before, and it makes me ill to even type this, but, *sob* it probably would have been a better story if the two women had remained platonic friends and no touch-a the booba. I know a lot of people think I’m One of Those cringe queers who will read/watch absolute garbage just if there is a queer person (which tbf I definitely also do sometimes, & it’s actually very valid of me, thank u very much), but if that were true I would have finished that awful Warming Trend book that I blogged about like 2 years go, or read any of the hundreds of stupid “subtext” trash that folks like to recommend, or ship Supercorp (no offense to anyone who ships them, I get it, Katie McGrath is hot, but come on, there is a perfectly good lesbian already on the show), or watched Glee. No, I do actually have some standards--  Are they super high, as a love-starved reader/viewer who uses romantic fiction as a primary means of escapism/coping with my shitty life? No, lmao. But as a writer, and as a queermo, nothing grinds my gears more than a badly executed lgbtq+ storyline.
Anyway, I just finished the book an hour ago so my crankiness & disappointment is raw and thus I am all over the place with this rant. I hope I’m not coming off as being too hard on the author, because despite it’s flaws, I am very glad to have serendipitously found The Mercies, and I look forward to checking out KMH’s other works. It’s been a long time since I’ve dug into a book and read it in just a few sittings like I did this, repeating “just one more chapter” for hours until it’s suddenly 3 am, and despite the fuckery to my sleep schedule it contributes to, the feeling is good-- it brings me back to simpler times when I actually was able to experience an ease from the constant uneasiness I always carry in my chest. Idk, moral of the story is that reading is fun, & when I get stuck in my Bad Turns & don’t read for months, it becomes easy to forget how much solace can come from a mid-quality but seductive (not in a horny way. but sometimes also in a horny way, lol) novel. Like, most of my reading these days is miserable 20th century theory or other academic/non-fiction writing related to our depressing capitalist hellscape & impending climate disaster, and The Mercies helped me remember that my roots lie in fiction. It also has me inspired to revisit a couple of historical fictions projects I have laying around, aND MAKE A WOMAN-EMPOWERMENT, ANTI-RACIST, QUEER AS HELL PERIOD FICTION PEICE THAT DOES NOT END IN COMPLETE GARBAGE! And in the meantime, I shall be revisiting the works of Sarah Waters, the only bad bitch I know of who writes queer historical fiction without relinquishing her characters solely to the suffering they experience ✌
If anyone has read this far and has any books/authors to recommend (wlw focused preferably, historical fiction or any genre as long as the story itself doesn’t rely on the tropes I touched on, recently published also preferably bc I have a long list of older books/authors but i don’t keep up with new releases like I should, & a lot of the ones I know are white & cis so PLEASE send reccs for more diverse stories/authors if you have them)

Thoughts on the Heroes of Olympus series (Part 3)
(The ending is somewhat spoiled in this one, so if that bugs you, read with caution.)                      Apparently, yesterday was Percy Jackson's birthday. So he's a Leo. Makes sense, I thought, and set to integrating this piece of trivia with my mental image of Percy, but then I realized that I already knew it from the following exchange in The Blood of Olympus: "Like the zodiac sign?" Percy asked. "I'm a Leo." "No, stupid," Leo said, "I'm a Leo. You're a Percy." The bad puns in this series are so real, guys. Anyway, given that it was Percy's birthday, it would've been neat if I could've posted this review yesterday, but alas, I just didn't have the energy after work. But hey, my lateness won't stop me from tagging this post with #happybirthdaypercy in a shameless attempt to increase my readership. Happy Birthday, Percy! I know you won't mind my using your birthday as a marketing tool.   The Blood of Olympus  Reyna and Nico are by far my favorite parts of this book, both separately and as a pair, but especially as a pair. Both are characters with deeply traumatic pasts who feel a respect and kinship for one another that eventually evolve into familial affection. Hazel may be Nico’s sister in name, but Reyna seems closer to filling Bianca’s role as big sister to Nico: whereas, historically, Nico has had to protect and guide Hazel, Reyna is someone who will not only do the same for him, but who will also worry for him. She has the magical ability to literally empathize with his need, as a boy who has lost a mother and an older sister, to feel cared for and considered, and is therefore uniquely qualified to respond to it. Nico’s bonds with both Reyna and Hazel, though, are beautiful.  As for Reyna herself, as much as I love all of the female characters in both this series and the original, in my estimation, she's the best, simply by virtue of being the most complex. Riordan's skill with developing characters through their internal struggles shines in Reyna's chapters. Let's not kid ourselves like the other characters do: she killed her father, even if it was in self-defense and even if he'd degenerated into a mania, giving her what is certainly the darkest backstory of any character in this series and probably of any character in any middle-grade series ever. I'm surprised that the publisher didn't insist on cutting the murder, though Riordan does gloss over its moral ambiguity somewhat. Nico's pretty terrifying in that one scene, too, and in his case, Reyna and Coach Hedge fully acknowledge the immorality of his actions. You all know the scene I'm referring to, or will if and when you read this book. Can I get some Dark!PercyxDark!Nico fanfics in addition to the Dark!Percy ones I already tried to commission in my previous blog post? (Oh, and if you're wondering about my thoughts on Reyna's sexuality, as I know many have imagined her as gay or bisexual, I personally ship her with herself regardless of her sexual preferences. To be clear, I have nothing against either interpretation of her character, but I got a little disenchanted with every character being or wanting to be in a serious romantic relationship as the series progressed. There are single teenagers, you know. I was one of them.) Before I conclude my discussion of Nico and Reyna, though, I have to mention the scene where Nico finally confesses to Percy that he once had a crush on him. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one cheering for him and wishing that I could be that cool while simultaneously laughing at Percy’s confusion and Annabeth’s amusement. And oh man, that high five between Annabeth and Nico. Perfect.  But it's time that I commented on Leo’s happy ending, in which he fulfills his role in the prophecy by dying (but not really) and keeping his oath to Calypso to free her from Ogygia.  Their whole relationship is comprised of moments of subtle tenderness, but the line in the last chapter that struck me most was:  “Leo Valdez,” she said. Nothing else - just his name, as if it were something magical.  I fangirled when I read that line, and the entire last chapter, for two reasons. The first is that, no matter how I try to deny the tendency in myself, I’m a hopeless romantic (yes, I’m a hopeless romantic who doesn’t read straight romance and who wants to see more single characters in middle-grade and YA novels. Everyone has their contradictions) who was invested in this couple from the start. However, the second reason pertains to Leo’s character. He’s the “seventh” wheel of the group, who’s spent the whole series doubting his own merits and developing crushes on girls who either take no interest in him or take no interest in him and seem interested in one of his friends instead. To be fair, one of these girls is a villain anyway, but her rejection still validates Leo’s insecurities. Even Calypso herself has a history with another of the Seven (Percy) and initially reacts to Leo's arrival on Ogygia as though it were a cruel joke of the gods'. The fact that the other characters largely disregard Leo - even I've ignored him until now, ironically, despite how hilarious I found his dialogue and narration - is what makes Riordan’s positioning him as the hero of the series so emotionally and narratively satisfying. He forms a plan to defeat Gaea without even consulting the others (might it be said that his inherited tendency to work independently and in isolation, which he and dad Hephaestus both perceive as a flaw, is what enables him to save the world?); he breaks Calypso's curse without leaning on the gods or on Percy's bargain with them. He goes from being the most overlooked of the Seven to someone whose very name inspires awe (and you can't tell me that Calypso's awe results solely from romantic feeling - I'm sure that, when she utters that line, she's also thinking of how Leo is the first and only person to manage to free her, to even remember her after leaving Ogygia). His is an underdog story done right. Overall As I hope you've gathered from my individual comments on each book, there's a lot to appreciate in this series: it's by turns light and funny and dark and morally ambiguous; it's smart and subtly overturns stereotypes and prejudices; and, perhaps most importantly, it's full of likable, relatable characters who feel distinct and real. It's self-aware too: as in the original series, Riordan raises the question - here, most notably in Arachne's version of her myth - of whether the gods are truly good or merely better than the alternatives of Gaea and the Titans; whether theirs is the side the demi-gods would willingly choose or merely the one they happen to be on because of their parentage. It's not often in children's adventure stories that the heroes consider that the villains may have a valid moral point, and beyond that, one that invalidates theirs. Even the last two Harry Potter books don't go as far with humanizing and demonizing Voldemort and Dumbledore, respectively. Unfortunately, the narrative does not adequately answer this question or many of the others that it raises. Take, as another example, Percy's "fatal flaw," loyalty, which I noted in Part 1 of my review never seems to result in negative consequences for either the Seven or the quest, despite being talked up by both gods and monsters throughout the series. Were the repeated warnings about it supposed to be foreshadowing Percy's decision to fall into Tartatus with Annabeth? If so, that makes no sense, as at least one demi-god was needed on each side of the Doors of Death, anyway, and Percy and Annabeth were obviously more successful as a team than either would've been alone. Or, as is more likely, was Percy's "fatal flaw" part of a larger plot thread that was dropped due to time and space constraints? But if that's the case, then why couldn't the first two books in the series have been condensed into one, or the series extended to include six or seven books? Surprisingly, considering how tightly plotted the original series was, the plot in this series fizzles to near nonexistence by the end of The Blood of Olympus, the tension building inconsistently as the climax approaches. Compared to the final battle in The Last Olympian, which engrossed me even more than the Battle of Hogwarts did (fellow Harry Potter fans, you don't have to call me a traitor; I assure you, I already feel like one), the stakes in the battle against Gaea and her army seemed the equivalent height of those in a fight involving elementary school children wielding sticks. Riordan's failure to deliver in this respect was especially glaring considering that he'd promised readers not one major battle in The Blood of Olympus, but two. Instead we get a one-on-one fight between Reyna and Orion that feels more internally than externally resonant and forestalls Major Battle #1, the Roman attack on the Greeks, before it even begins; a fight with the earthborn during which no one but Jason is really needed, as he's shown to be tremendously overpowered; and a fight between Leo and Gaea, which should've been Major Battle #2 but which is over within a page or two. The characters reiterate throughout the series how powerful Gaea is and how much more substantial of a threat she is than the Titans, but even the lowest monster in Tartarus was scarier and took longer to defeat. Hell, the Minotaur in The Lightning Thief would've been a worthier opponent for our heroes. The only explanation I can think of for the disappointing finish to this series is, again, that Riordan must have run out of time or space to give readers a proper final battle (though he hinted at two, I would've settled for one). Or possibly steam.   Still, although the series as a whole has a rushed and sloppy quality to it, I would still highly recommend it, both for the reasons listed above and for its resemblance to fanfiction. Yes, sadly, only in fanfiction would I expect to read a continuation of Percy Jackson's story with as many minority as white demi-god protagonists, whose cultures, used respectfully by Riordan, inform rather than define their identities; a gay character who is revealed to be in love with the protagonist of the first series; and an emphasis on female empowerment and the glorification of the feminine. There’s even a character -  arguably the most physically attractive of the Seven, might I add - who discovers that he needs glasses! I was shocked, albeit pleasantly so, to find a published series containing all of these elements, and I'm not even gay or a minority. If you pick up these books for the representation alone, you won't regret it.     But that won’t be necessary: there are a multitude of other fun reasons.

Truthwitch by Susan Dennard
Rating: 4.5/5 Reading level: Young adult
Synopsis: “On a continent ruled by three empires, everyone is born with a ‘witchery,' a magical skill that sets them apart from others. Now, as the Twenty Year Truce in a centuries long war is about to end, the balance of power-and the failing health of all magic-will fall on the shoulders of a mythical pair called the Cahr Awen. The biggest thing on Safi and Iseult's minds is saving money for their planned future in the Hundred Isles. Iseult, a Threadwitch, can see the emotional Threads binding the world. Safi, on the other hand, is a Truthwitch-she always knows when a person is telling a lie. A powerful magic like that is something people would kill to have on their side-or to keep off their enemy's side-and so Safi cannot even admit what she truly is. With the help of the cunning Prince Merik (a Windwitch and a ship's captain) and the hindrance of a Bloodwitch bent on revenge, the friends must rise above their doubts and fight to learn who they are and what they are made of, if they are going to stay alive and preserve the balance of their world.” — Amazon synopsis
Personal review: I picked up and read this book because my favorite author, Sarah J. Maas, rated it very highly on Goodreads. Additionally, the plot line intrigued me and I was in the mood for a book that had a little more substance than the summer throwaway romances I’ve been reading lately, which are good for what they are, but not something I want to write home about, or review for that matter. So, armed with a favorable review and a hunger for something new, I picked up Susan Dennard’s Truthwitch and was not disappointed.       The story starts fast and stays that way for the most part. Activity after activity, battle after battle, race after race besieges the main characters, namely Iseult and Safiya. Whether it’s a driven bloodwitch, sea foxes or a mysterious puppeteer, it’s an action-packed novel to be sure. While this pacing drives the story forward, I think to some degree it’s to the detriment of the characters and their development. Really all of the main characters had room for a lot more development that they just didn’t get the chance for. Furthermore, when the development opportunities came, they were abrupt and almost always formatted as an epiphany. One epiphany per book is believable. Several across multiple characters is dubious.       As a final critique (I promise I really did like the book), I really think this book would have benefited from a glossary of sorts in addition to a map. Readers should pay close attention and I wish luck to anyone who chooses to read it as an audiobook (I initially tried, but found I couldn’t keep up as easily as I normally can). A simple, cheat sheet type of system as to who the different gods, the different instruments, etc. would have made the book much easier to follow.       Now then, I realize that seems like a lot of criticism for a book I rated a 4.5/5, but with the exception of those complaints, I really thought the book was phenomenal.       First and foremost, the world Dennard created is truly unique and special. It has religion; it has many languages; it has wars; it has prejudices; it has legends. It is so tricky to create such a comprehensive and immersive universe, on the scope that Dennard has, but she does it so eloquently. Her imagery is fantastic and her writing really puts the reader in the world. Hell, she even created symbolic dances her characters performed during the novel. That level of detail which Dennard utilizes really paints a colorful for readers to jump into.       I also loved the way the friendship between Safiya and Iseult is written. They trust each other, they believe in each other and they support each other. It’s been a while (if ever) since I’ve read a novel which put such an emphasis on the importance of friendship and platonic relationships over romantic relationships. The main male characters, Merik and Kullen, share a similar bond, and male friendship is even rarer, especially in young adult novels where the male character is often either superficial or isolated in some way, afraid to show emotion or fondness toward another male character.      And anyone who knows me knows I’m a hopeless romantic, so I’d be remiss if I didn’t talk about the romance in Truthwitch. It’s very understated and certainly not the main plot line of this book, making it a good book for everyone, even those who don’t care much for romance. But those who love a good romance won’t be disappointed, either. The romance that’s there, while passionate and instant, is still believable and follows that ever popular “enemies to lovers” trope that, at least for me, is always a joy to read.       I’ve already snagged a copy of the second book, Windwitch and am looking forward to starting that and hopefully picking up where I left off. Readers who enjoyed Sarah J. Maas’ Throne of Glass series or Morgan Rhodes’ Falling Kingdoms will similarly enjoy this book.
Recommended?: Definitely!
Reviewer’s note: SO sorry for the inactivity. It’s literally been a year since my last review. I may go back and review some of the books I’ve read since then, but I’m not sure. I won’t make any excuses, but for those who still read this, thanks for your support! --Sam

Text
There's a new mantra in my head. And I think I'll have to utter it so many times to remind myself not to get too lost in how my fantasies and dreams work.
No, I'm not ready for a relationship. No, I'm not ready to commit. No, I can't. Not now, not anytime soon.
I know for a fact that I'm a hopeless romantic person and for the past years, I've buried that fact deep down. Never wanting it to be true anymore. Romance wouldn't get you somewhere even if a lot of films prove that to be true. UP taught me that. And I have seen that, pressed deeply in my face. And yet, lately, I found myself obsessing over the fact that I have to find this The One, there is this hole hoping to meet him sooner or later.
But thanks to the people around me...I am always reminded that marriage is never easy. It's a 24/7 life filled with compromise, patience, and endurance. Love alone can't keep a relationship going. Love can't be the only reason to do something because sometimes love can make us do things irrationally, ways that could hurt people, actions that could make or break us. And I'm not ready for that. I don't think I ever will.
So whenever I thought or felt that longing in my chest to intertwine my fingers with somebody else's, I remind myself to be ready first. I ask myself if I am ready to forgive, to be hurt in a thousand times and manage to still be functioning and remain as me. And most importantly, feel the love over this person above everything else despite his past, his mistakes, his flaws and imperfections, every shortcomings, and every hurtful words/actions he may do to me. I hope I get to choose to love him and endure not the forever we have (because come on, there's literally no forever; there is an ending to anything) but the time we are given to find home in each other's arms.
So to whoever you are that's destined to be with me, I hope you're not ready too but looking forward to that day that you may be ready. Until then, we have to prepare ourselves. I hope by now, you have come to realize that you should stop playing games and have started to take life seriously. I hope you get to heal your scars and fill the gaps in your heart with love from God and yourself. I won't be there yet to physically show my support. But I know that all my life, I've been rooting for you. And from this day on, I will pray for you too continuously, not just when the thought of you comes up in my head. Take care of yourself (for me LOL). I miss you even when I haven't met you yet. (This is getting too cheesy now and the mantra repeats now as I am writing this. Why, oh why am I such a hopeless romantic??)
P.S. I hope you like love Star Wars 😉 and even if you don't, I hope I get to still love you deeply, madly, and truly without any reservations. =))))
P.P.S. Please, please love Star Wars as much as I do!!! 😉
