bro just wanna say everybody loves raymond is a fucking god awful show i hate it with a burning passion i watched so much of it against my will it was PAINFULLY written by a man it's so misogynistic and Straight(TM) with boomer humor and i LOATHE it with every fibre of my being and i hope you loathe it too so we can loathe it together <3 also the only good character is Amy
oh it’s painfully obvious that the writers hate women 😭I gotta say that enough of it is entertaining to me to be somewhat enjoyable (it helps that the cast, especially Frank/Marie/Robbie, are strong comedic actors), but yeah I absolutely completely see your opinion 😅I couldn’t get more than a few episodes into Home Improvement for that same reason- it was WAY too much for me

Happy new year, everyone! Welcome to 2024, the year that will mark the 10th anniversary of Thanks Ken Penders. I'd like to go over my plans for the blog for this year.
First of all: in the very near future, I'll have a post with my thoughts on Sonic Dream Team, and I'm sure I'll write one last Sonic Prime review once the final episodes drop on the 11th. I've also been sitting on an unfinished piece about the Sonic LEGO sets. I wanted this to be longer and more detailed piece that not only reviewed the sets but also went into the weird disconnect between homogenized image of Sonic the Brand and the actual fiction it's based off of, but it'll probably end up getting cut down a lot just so I can put something out. Let's just say I did a fun little thing with one of the sets.
Second: yes, I would like to return to regular TKP updates this year. As I've said many times, I wanted to do this in 2023, but I've been suffering from creative burnout after finishing SLARPG and have generally been unable to focus on any of my creative goals this past year. I'm hoping that this year will be better and I'll be able to get back into the swing of covering Archie Sonic issues. Even doing one issue every week or so would be vastly preferable to continuing the hiatus. I'm still only halfway done!! But aside from burnout, my other main hurdle is that I need to reread my own archive to refresh myself on all these things after nearly three years away. This will take some time.
The thing is, though, this year I'll have an extra incentive to go back through my previous writing and brush up on all things Archie Sonic. Because you see...
I've decided that I want to make a video essay about Penders. The comics, the copyright battle, The Lara-Su Chronicles, everything.
The why
I've thought about doing this before, but I never committed to the idea. I was too busy with gamedev, or I thought it'd end up being too long, or I figured that there were already enough videos on the subject, or I just lacked confidence in my ability to put together a video essay. So I told myself it wasn't meant to be, and let the multiple YouTubers who have cited me as a source on their own Penders videos fill that void.
Recently, though, a few things have happened that have convinced me it might be time. For one, YouTube video essays/media retrospectives/etc. are just getting longer and longer. When Quinton Reviews is out here doing 21 hours of videos on Sam & Cat, a subpar Nick sitcom that only lasted one season, I don't feel so crazy for wanting to make a video about several hundred comic books and two lawsuits that'd be at least an hour or two long lmao. Admittedly, I've also been self-conscious about doing a long video essay like this as a trans woman who has yet to do any vocal training. But these days I feel like I see a lot more transfem YouTubers who have done little to no vocal training, and that's given me more confidence on that front.
But the big one was Hbomberguy's recent plagiarism video. As I sat there watching it, I kept thinking about the time I found a CBR article that was just a crude 800 word summary of my two previous articles on Penders, published by a CBR writer who's put out over 4000 articles since 2019. If I've already been plagiarized before, and my writing is so frequently passed around as a go-to source on Archie Sonic drama, then I wouldn't be shocked if there were YouTubers out there straight up just plagiarizing me. I don't watch other peoples' videos on Archie Sonic, so I'd never know! So if people are just gonna paraphrase me when covering these topics anyway, why not take matters into my own hands and make what I would consider to be the definitive video on the subject? If hacks like James Somerton and iilluminaughtii can churn out these shitty video essays and people will still watch them, surely it can't be that impossible to make my own, right? (And also, uh, Hbomb literally told me I should make the video lol. If you're reading this, thanks for the encouragement.)
The what, how, and when
So here's the plan.
Part of this video essay will be an adaptation of my Medium article on the recurring themes of Ken's Archie Sonic run, with its content touched up and expanded upon. There were a few things I skimmed over in the article because I didn't want it to get too long, but again, people are out here watching ten hour videos about bad Nickelodeon sitcoms now. I can get away with elaborating a little more. I can add a few paragraphs talking about the Chaos Knuckles arc, or throw in a little more historical context I've discovered in the years since.
After covering the comics, the back half(-ish?) of the video will be dedicated to the copyright battles and their ensuing controversies, trying to give an accurate picture of what actually went down, the sheer scale of how bad Archie fucked up, and what our takeaways should be. This will have some similarities to my New York Magazine article on the subject, but I'll be rewriting it from scratch. I REALLY had to keep things short for that article because I was already way over the expected word count, and my tone was a little more straight-laced than normal because I was trying to keep things Professional. I can riff more and insert more of my own opinions this time, like I normally would.
I'll inevitably have to touch on some of Ken's Bad Tweets when discussing things that have happened after the lawsuits, but I don't want the video to just devolve into a list of times people got mad at him on Twitter, so I'm gonna try to keep that to a minimum in favor of focusing on his actual work. Things like the Scourge the Speed Demon incident and his continued statements on certain characters' copyright statuses probably warrant mentioning, though. And finally, assuming that the book really does come out this summer, I would like the grand finale of the video to be about those first couple chapters of The Lara-Su Chronicles.
I don't currently know when this video will get done, but it'll probably be in the back half of the year, especially with me waiting for the book to either drop or get delayed yet again. But I've actually already started writing a bit of the script, and will keep chipping away at it for a while.
So, uh, yeah, look forward to that? Wish me luck?

you cameo'd in the new todd in the shadows video
Oop
Yeah. I very recently became a fan of Somerton's "work" (been a super longtime fan of Todd tho so that's kinda wild), literally only subscribed to him last month after casually watching him for about a year. I just watched the YOI video right after rewatching the series a couple weeks ago bc it popped up on my feed bc of algorithms.
What Somerton did makes my blood boil because in recent weeks I actually was really inspired by what I thought was his writing in starting my own media analysis essay (iykyk), only to find out that he stole all of it and the more iffy parts of his essays that I ignored started to connect into a pattern of him just Being a Huge Dick. So yeah, as a writer, an academic, a fan of media analysis, a queer person, and a former fan of his, I'm super fucking pissed.
I don't want to go back to the video to find the full comment bc I don't want to give that jackass more views, but it was me genuinely talking about how much YOI meant to me as a queer teen and I'm kinda upset that I put it under a video that really did not deserve it.
I haven't watched Todd's full video yet (I still have like an hour to go on the hbomb one) but from what I gathered around that timestamp I'm glad Todd used me as an example to prove that shitbag wrong lol. Get his ass Todd
Anyway if you want some recommendations actually good queer video essayists, my favorites are Alexander Avila (formerly AreTheyGay, currently has a similar breadtube style and very cinematic direction while discussing aspects of queer and online culture), Matt Baume (talks a lot about gay film/Hollywood/sitcom history in particular which I find fascinating), Lily Simpson (reviews "trans episodes" of various tv shows) and Kaz Rowe (my current favorite, has a really cool aesthetic and talks about everything from general history and myth debunking with queer/feminist focuses to victorian bullshit to golden age Hollywood history)!

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hellooo <3 I've been on Tumblr for a few years now, however, lately I have become a bit of a slacker in terms of my student and professional life and a lot of y'all have inspired me to get a studyblr + accountability blog to help keep myself in check, focused and driven
🌻 about me ♡
name: tofu
age: 23
pronouns: she/her
zodiac: ⊙ aries, ☽ scorpio, ↑ scorpio
languages I speak: english, hindi, japanese (beginner)
🌻 my favourite subjects ♡
- academic: chemistry, cybersecurity, creative writing, biology, personal finance, physics, discrete math, intro to programming (the easiest part about a cs degree yet daunting)
- non-academic: cosmetic science, psychology, literature, ancient/modern history, physics, astronomy, linguistics
I'm trying to once again pick up hobbies that I used to have as a child, such as reading, singing, gardening, cooking/baking, scrapbooking
In my free time, I love watching asian soap operas, Studio Ghibli, and sitcoms that I'd like to call my comfort shows and video essays related to all my non-academic subject interests
I'm an undergrad student currently enrolled in a computer science/fintech double major and I'm preparing either to enter the workforce or pursue a masters in either quantitative finance or bioinformatics engineering or data science (wow, the existential crisis that came with typing up that sentence). I could also talk more about my interests in the above-mentioned subject areas, or new ones as they come up. My goal is to create a routine for myself that I can actually stick to, and spend each day having learnt at least something, no matter how small. I feel like the only way to achieve that is by comparing myself to my peers (I know that is v toxic but hey it helps). Additionally I really want to learn how to drive this year, learn to crochet and keep up with new technologies, do some art journalling to take my mind off stress.
I'm so excited to meet new people on here and keep myself busy and productive! ❤️

I think that should suffice for my introduction, though it looks a bit long…I’m a blabber could you tell?
Anyways thank you for sticking around for the end! If you want to see any updates on my goals or read my blabber about my interests don’t hesitate to follow me! (Also follow me on Ao3 @/dino_mp3 if you’re an Azul lvr bc all my fanfics are about him) This tumblr is more of a casual stop for me to be more myself and work towards a better me :) But thank you again and I hope you have a good day/night! Hello! I'm the anon with the protector goddess OC from a while ago, I just realised I never actually responded to your response. Thank you for telling me that! I am cis myself, as you could probably tell haha, but there are a lot of trans women (writers or video essayists mostly) who I really look up to, and whose content helped me through a lot of dark times in my own mind.
To continue about my OC - she is pretty specifically only a protector of women, especially girls, not from general sexism but mostly violent misogyny, something that is very important to me because of some bad experiences. It is actually a plot point that she saved a girl, a possible future priestess, from death and assault by an invading force, but did not save the lives of her brother or father, something that drives the girl away from her religion - she would rather, in that moment, have died along with them. So, I do think that I unfortunately lack any of the nuance to write a trans man in the sect.
Anyway, there is a transfemale priestess! Her name is Luna, she is a poet and a pacifist, the daughter of a famous and wealthy liquor maker. Very mysterious, high-class woman.
Hey anon it's good to hear from you again!!! I remember your ask and your cool concept hehe
Getting more context of the nature of the goddesses inner circle makes that choice make sense though! If it's really a girl's only club I think I'd make the same call (that's just me tho). I'm sure it's something you've thought about a lot and I know you're coming about it from a really thoughtful angle either way. So I think it's a safe one. And I also completely get how writing stuff like this is a very deeply personal thing so I encourage you on that front and wish you a lot of luck!
But Luna sounds really cool! Mysterious high class woman.... She seems objectively awesome, and a really cool character to have on board, just in general, but also to make it clear this goddess is pro trans lol
You said you watch YouTube essays on this stuff right? Have you seen Lily Simpson's stuff? She does in depth reviews of different trans episodes in tv, usually sitcoms and such, and I think they're really interesting to watch from the perspective of seeing which stereotypes get reinforced through popular media and how they both reflect and encourage transphobic attitudes at the time. And that still pervade today. Recommended 👍
Anyway for real good luck with your ocs feel free to send me an ask about them anytime! Not just for stuff like this but just to generally ramble if you ever feel like it :) they seem very cool, and ik how it is to hold this stuff so personally so I'm really in your corner here! Good luck again anon!! 💖💖💖

all of the (video) essays I want to make eventually:
Tumblr media
some of these are self explanatory, but I'll explain a bit bc why not
I think 7 would just be really funny if I made like a 8 hour video meticulously going through the whole plot trying to fix everything
number 4 would be about corpanga, miggie (maddie and diggie from liv and maddie) and lutteo because I think there are some similarities and differences that would be fun to talk about
number 8 is basically catagorising all the disney channel brothers into nerd vs troublemaker, maybe a sub catagory of stupid
10-12 would essentially be the same style of videos as quinton reviews NCU series, like episode by episode recap while also looking into lore and stuff (currently there are 9 seasons I think, so it would be 3 seasons per video/essay)
number 13 is purely because SOMEONE needs to write or make a video about backstage it is such a good show and criminally underrated
number 9 in a similar way because not enough people are talking about the TRAVESTY that was the icarly reboot getting cancelled i just have to make something about that
5 has probably been done before but i have my own perspective bc i watched gmw before bmw and i really want to see more than just 'this show will never hold up to the original' I WANT TO GET INTO WHY AND WHAT WENT WRONG (cough cough why would you make an abc family sitcom into a disney highly censored kids show)

The Y-7 Psychopath - Cowardice or Humility
Don't know if anybody cares about some juvenile "media analysis" from me, but why not, especially on a idea I had in my mind, and finally think it is prudent to put it out there, to see how people feel about it.
So you know western cartoons? And Im not talking about "adult animated sitcoms" or the recent surge of "totally mature and bloody!!!" cartoons that in the end are the same juvenile superhero stuff lol just with exploding heads and awkward animated sex scenes lol.
Yeah, just the standard cartoons that people get really insecure about liking, and make video essays about how "actually it is a masterpiece of mature writting". But instead of me mocking this fact to try to hide my own anxiety over being somebody who makes a fanfic comic, lets go with this
So lets circle back to the title of this "essay" - and start with an example - Everybody loves Zuko from Avatar, I watched the show as a kid, you did, probably kids today do it when all their influencer idols force them too.
Perfect for exploring the point then: And that is the point, people claim how realistic and satisfieng Zuko's arc is, how the redemption is both earned and not without hurdles, not without fallbacks. So where is the issue?
Well I remember sometimes smugly thinking "Well what a coincidence that Zuko never actually on screen killed anyone so he never is really a bad guy...' And this I interpreted to be mostly the case of the rating - basically without the restriction the show would probably include Zuko killing what is at best combatants of the defending side or at worst even civilians. And this would probably kinda derail the arc or leave a bad taste in everybodys mouth...
But the question is left unanswered - is it at the end better, that Zuko gets redemeed in a way that is setup to leave out this elephant out of the room? Hell even I felt kinda weirded out about how nonchalant everyone was about the fact that Zuko hired an assassin, like it was kinda played off for laughs, but maybe that was to show "see we are redeeming him without writting out realistic evils like murder!" - still there is a difference between killing civilians and hiring some copyright free terminator.
So no answer? Well maybe lets look at the opposite case - anime, the cartoons that can kinda go away with showing unscreen murder and atrocities. And to bring it back, lets go with Soul Eater (and no manga spoiler this time cause Im generous and because this would open another can of worms, and I'll save that for the future)
Everybodys favorite charachter that gets reduced to one trait that ironically would be kinda problematic if one really was thinking about it in a certain way - Crona. Also know for killing people who were pointed out to be "not evil enough for it to be ok©®™"
So here we have this charachter, with a whole arc of being abused, having the famous trauma™, doing bad because of a parental figure and wanting to make that figure happy even if its in a twisted way, not getting what real love is...
Basically Im saying Zuko and Crona share a lot of simmilarities looked at this surface level. But only Crona has the problematic aspect of "mass murder". And even I kinda felt it being pushed under the rug no matter how I'll defend Crona from slander on the net while being sick both in body and soul lol.
But here is the thing - atleast I see Crona (atleast in the anime) as mostly some kind of child soldier - I dont think anybody thinks that some african boy that was forced at gunpoint to snort coke and kill his parents while being abused all his life, is "guilty" of the crimes in a way that an adult who does it for a less extreme reason.
Still, even if for me that is mostly justification enough (even if I kinda problematise the whole guilt thing in my comic), I still get it - even if explained it still leaves a bad aftertaste
Like even the most goodhearthed person would probably be weirded out if the person next to them would go "Thank God I was saved, cause till I was 14, I was forced to go from village to village and shoot everyone that moved!". One can say neither person is really at fault yet still it is a sticky topic.
And maybe thats where Im going with this - the problem isnt about depicting the redemption or whatever of killers, but if a story is mature and "deep" enough to handle it. So with my Avatar example I think that in a back handed way, it was good that Zuko wasnt a killer - becaue even if everybody loves the show (I mostly do to, shit was fun) - its kinda clear that in the end the writting and themes etc were on a level of a kid show - enough for kids, but not complex enough to actually deal with some things that other works could (and not even talking about something being grimdark or complex, cause nah everybody hates DBZ but that shit was so.good everybody felt Vegeta turning good and dont make essays about how bad that was, anyways that is why DBZ is too complicated for most western fans💅💅💅 ((but thats a topic for another day))
So to come back to the Crona question - was Soul Eater really prepared to deal with the topic of mass killing inocent people (mostly)? Especially when Ohkubo says himself that it was "a show where death isnt taken seriously"?
Cause I think, with Cronas struggle being mostly about abuse, doing bad things because of parental abandonment, fear etc, was it really necessary to add this baggage? Especially with a show that has that many visual metaphors?
And one example that I would use kinda proves my point and maybe implys that Ohkubo also kinda started backpedalling - the second time we see Crona, there are no wannabe gangsters, just souls of already killed people by another kishinegg which is just a wacky bad guy who isnt even really alive himself (and eve. comically survives)
Basically what I'm entertaining, is if wouldnt have been better to have Crona absorb souls that other Kishinseggs had collected, in this way preserving that they do something wrong (but reversible as later shown with the confiscation) yet never having to go to the extreme of "haha check out this wacky outfit our new friend Crona is wearing! Also twenty people were murdered in that church, shit was crazy"
But am I really basically saying 4kids Crona is the answer. Putting it this way lol, I dunno, I mean I like the pirate rap, but just sanitising everything seems off to me to. So yeah I dont even know.
And that is what leaves this whole question like the socratic dialogs, without any real answer with more confusion than before. But maybe it could "start a discussion" or whatever. But in case it was just a waste of time, without going anywhere:
Yeah... Sorry
Also quick manga spoilers as a bonus
This would aslo avoid making Cronas fate feel so cope-outish, cause that seemed to be the real reason - Ohkubo neither felt comfortable ignoring the whole message of overcoming fear and connecting no matter what, while also just saying that killing more people in Ukraine than in the last 2 years was just a big uppsie - hence the paradox of the non ending "I dont want to hurt. anybody, but actually I am evil.and care for Maka only or maybe Im just guiltu or maybe not and Im crazy xddd"

So i went on to youtube to look see if there were any video essays orretrospectives to scratch that urusei yatsura itch, and i sumbled into a spanish dub of a few episodes and the inaba ova and i cant tell you how much of a trip it is. Hearing the spanish voices and tthen hearing the background music, gave me the exact same feel as if i was watching regular spanish tv, it made me realize just how close the music is to a mexican sitcom named chavo del ocho. Its a trip that i just wanted to share.
Tumblr media
Hai there, Hope you're doing great!!
I don't speak Spanish so I can't say much on this one but I do like hearing about different dubs of shows I enjoy, regardless the language. It is interesting to hear how voice acting in different languages (plus music) can give off a different, yet enjoyable vibe to those watching. Oh, and the fact that some of the screams and yelling were kept from the original in the dub is actually very funny. Thanks for sharing!

lately my gender feels extremely related to late 2000s/2010s Nickelodeon sitcoms like iCarly and Victorious (Victorious has been my biggest special interest for years and there have been video essays from my one of my favorite creators that came out recently relating to that subject)
also I fully understand if you don't wanna do this one bc there's some questionable things in those sitcoms lol
anyways sorry for the rant but I would love a gender/flag for a gender relating to Victorious or nickelodeon sitcoms in general
feeling the need to add to my hoard teehee:3
Posted! I had to do research because I never watched these shows!

I am going to specifically ask that you do NOT watch Sam & Cat, or Henry Danger or any of that shit.
However, you should watch the many insanely long Quentin Reviews videos about Nickelodeon sitcoms. It will take days. It is, to some degree, worth it.
I will leave the yt video essay watching to my wife ultimately

Writing an Essay on Brooklyn 99 So Maybe I Can Stop Thinking About It Every Day:
i can't wait for like 20 years from now when we'll be able to have thoroughly researched academic articles about what the fuck happened with brooklyn 99 and its place in the culture bc even tho i haven't cared to rewatch a single episode since it ended i still think about the show at least once a day because of how fucking surreal that situation was. and ik we already have some (very good!) video essays about the copaganda aspect of it but i feel like we're not gonna be able to understand the full scope of what this sitcom means until decades from now
like it's just so bizarre when you think about it, bc while police and the broader "justice" system have always been viewed as inherently cruel and biased to target minorities and uphold the rich white cishet status quo by many people, this view wasn't quite as mainstream when the show started. the show being set at a police department likely carried none of this baggage to the people working on it when it was first pitched. the thought process was (likely) more like well, we already have sitcoms that take place at all these generic jobs, so "cop" is a natural continuation of that list, as well as well, police dramas have been huge for the past twenty years, so having a sitcom set at a police department allows us to spoof that and get some cool action sequences, and let's be real andy samberg needs something to do after snl. like not excusing the glorification of cops by any means, but imagine if you were the creator of "the office" and then around season 6 it became impossible to ignore that paper companies were inherently racist and killing people and there was a movement to defund them??? again, it's not a perfect analogy bc there are just inherent parts of being a cop that should have tipped people off that maybe this isn't the best for a goofy comedy, but i don't think this show was made with any malicious intent, it was just very bad luck
but the "goofy sitcom about cops comes out when cops are still seen (by the mainstream) as normal guys and stays on the air long enough to have an existential crisis in 2020" thing honestly isn't the only reason this show fascinates me. i think this aspect has been covered by other people a fair amount, and honestly it's not even unique to brooklyn 99 (there are still a TON of cop shows on the air rn, even cop comedies! none of them have reached the same heights as brooklyn 99 but yeah unfortunately the "defund the police" movement did not kill cop shows). the real reason brooklyn 99 has retained such a bizarre place in sitcom history, and why it even had this identity crisis to begin with, is in its tone.
if i had to guess the three things brooklyn 99 is most remembered for are:
being a copaganda sitcom that tried not to be and imploded on itself
the cold open bits that were such widespread memes that even if you've never watched the show you can probably quote at least two
the diversity of its characters
we're going to focus on number three. brooklyn 99 was a groundbreakingly diverse show from the very beginning. the number of people of color in its cast was beyond most sitcoms at the time, and captain holt being openly gay was a plot point from the pilot episode. however, i don't think the show really embraced its status as "the woke sitcom" until around season 2 or 3 (i don't remember exactly when the shift happened and i don't want to rewatch it to find out) in the earliest episodes, the tone is more focused on typical sitcom tropes combined with parodies of police drama tropes. this is also a very egregious era for people to look back on like "hm the behavior of these cops isn't entirely ethical even tho they're the supposed good guys," but again other people have covered this topic way better than i can
however, in seasons 3-5 brooklyn 99 started to take off in liberal circles because of its "progressive" politics. the show's female characters were badass and had actual personalities! the show had characters who were people of color and acknowledged racism existed! the show even started having episodes that acknowledged these issues, and its cast pushed for advocacy as well. as someone who was deep in the "brooklyn 99 is out unproblematic fave" culture of that era, i specifically remember rosa's coming out episode as a huge moment for queer representation, and i remember how much people applauded the episode where terry is racially profiled by another officer for shedding light on the issue. the characters on brooklyn 99 weren't just seen as "the good guys," they were seen as an ideal diverse friend group. the retort whenever someone pointed out the copaganda was to point out the depiction of other cops on the show being "the bad guys," and explain "brooklyn 99 isn't saying all cops are good, it's saying that our main characters are an example of what police should be like, and we can work together to make the system better!" i'll dissect this take more later, but for not this is just a snapshot of what the culture was like.
the main thing i remember from being on tumblr during the heyday of brooklyn 99 was this phrase being repeated over. and over. and over. again:
"this is proof that you can be funny without being offensive!"
sure, brooklyn 99 wasn't the only show to be given this tag line by its fan base, but i associate this take with brooklyn 99 more than any other show that was popular during that time. especially when it comes to the cold open bits, like "now number five", or "the full bullpen!" or "hot damn!" it would also be applied to bits about queerness like "bye rosa!" or "BONE???" which is understandable, since most sitcom audiences were used to queerness constantly being the butt of the joke and it was nice to just hear bisexuality used as a non-judgmental pun for once.
this was also during an era where "offensive comedy" was very heavily taken over by the right wing, especially trump supporters. in the minds of many, "offensive comedy" just meant a conservative saying slurs and getting butthurt when people stopped laughing. the right was offensive and grotesque, so the left would take the high road and be tolerant of everything. we don't want to offend people, but we still want comedy, so brooklyn 99 is a nice way to reassure ourselves that we can still laugh while being as inoffensive as possible. the ironic thing is i'm sure someone can find a reason to find any one of these brooklyn 99 cold opens offensive. i'm not going to make a callout post for every single potentially offensive thing in these bits bc that just feels like making up a guy to get mad at, but my point is "offensiveness" is subjective and not the deadly sin we thought it was.
(to detour slightly, this idea of "proof that you can be funny without being offensive" was so internalized in me that i ended up self-censoring my own works so much. it actually wasn't until i discovered scott thompson's comedy that i realized being "offensive" in the overt queerness of your work is actually so much more powerful than trying to look unproblematic. homophobes are gonna find you disgusting no matter what you do, so don't censor yourself to seem better than them because at best they won't care and at worst they'll see you as the death of comedy)
season five was the peak of brooklyn 99 imo. the show was diverse. the fandom was everywhere. the comedy was iconic. then it was cancelled. not the social-media-version of cancelled, that will come much later. fox, the network brooklyn 99 aired on, pulled the plug on the show after season five, leading to a massive uproar on twitter in defense of the show. major celebrities were tweeting about how they watched it every week, people were petitioning other networks to pick it up, and eventually someone did!! brooklyn 99 was brought back on nbc through season 8 and we all lived happily ever after
just kidding but can you imagine?
whenever brooklyn 99 pops into my brain these days, i keep coming back to the same theory, which is that the show would be remembered much more fondly if it was just cancelled after season five. i would've been sad, sure, but think about it. it's 2018. this show is still viewed as the pinnacle of positive representation by so many people. its fan base is vast and passionate, and it even ended on the classic wedding episode for the will-they/won't-they couple. yeah it's a shame to let all that momentum go to waste and not have a proper sendoff for everyone, but we move on and fans fill in the gaps themselves through their own creativity. a few years down the line, our nation finally experiences a reckoning with police brutality and the defund the police movement gains traction. this of course taints the legacy of our beloved cop sitcom, but we didn't know back then (even though we really should've), and since the show is done we can just enjoy it as escapism while also being firm in our beliefs irl. this system isn't perfect, but the question of how do we remember brooklyn 99? is a lot easier when brooklyn 99 is not currently airing
but brooklyn 99 was airing, and seasons 6-8 were a mess. even beyond the copaganda conversation, things just felt a bit off. the shorter seasons definitely didn't help, since they took away a fan favorite aspect of the show (the halloween heist episodes, which honestly are the only things i'm ever tempted to rewatch anymore) and gave us less and less time in the world of our characters. jake and amy had a kid, because that's what sitcom couples are supposed to do. we saw rosa's girlfriend. and rosa's girlfriend. and rosa's girlfriend. the show dealt with mass shootings, the #metoo movement, and other topical issues.
then the world shut down, and middle class white people finally had to reckon with the realities of police brutality since they couldn't look away. brooklyn 99 of course was swept up in this conversation, and since they were always known as the most progressive sitcom on television, they had to do something. but it was looking more and more like despite all their efforts "progressive cop show" was an oxymoron, and all they could do was try and minimize the damage while making a swift exit.
there have already been several essays on how brooklyn 99 handled its identity as a "cop show" in its final season, and this essay is already long enough so I won't get into the weeds even more here. some aspects were a good step towards important conversations (rosa quitting, jake's realization that everyone sees themselves as one of the good ones, etc.). some were... trying their best? but also vague enough that there was no substance beyond just saying "this is a thing" (amy's arc about submitting a proposal defunding some police programs? i don't even remember if that's what it was about since it was so vague). and others were just kind of baffling??? like. the show ends with jake quitting being a cop, which is good. and his decision is framed as entirely about wanting to spend more time with his son... but also the whole reason he got to spend more time with his son was because he got suspended for intimidating a suspect and being super unethical??? and that's never brought up again or cited as a reason for jake quitting. like, they already had rosa quit because she realized being a cop was just contributing to a corrupt system, and jake has just had the dark realization that no matter how golden-retriever-husband he is, he's still a corrupt cop??? but they fully ignore that and make the finale about family??? idk it just feels like they wrote the finale before everything went down and never bothered to rewrite it.
but the important thing is that brooklyn 99 finally ended, and rather than being met with the standing ovation of its almost-finale in season five, it was met with... still a moderate amount of applause, but mostly people looking away and awkwardly asking what to do with it now. in the years since, i have barely seen anything about brooklyn 99 on the internet. idk if it's just because of who i surround myself with, but to contrast, i still see things about the office, parks and rec, community, scrubs, 30 rock, etc. years after they ended. i didn't even like the office! and these shows certainly had problematic elements as well (even my favorites on this list, community and scrubs, have some jokes that really don't hold up), but even tho i couldn't scroll past 5 posts on tumblr in 2015 without seeing a fandom redraw of "and i know that if i run at terry he will catch me" "JAKE I'M HOLDING COFFEE!", brooklyn 99 has kind of... vanished?
the only times i'm forced to think about brooklyn 99 now (outside of this essay bouncing around my brain every 24 hours) are when i see a post where it is the butt of the joke or a piece of discourse that we all know the right side of. a netflix synopsis of the show prioritizes saying it's "full of memeable moments" but never uses the word "cop." that's obviously bad, but also, that's accurate to how we thought of the show back in 2015. the cop thing was easily ignorable by its fans. or, more potently, on a post about how cops shouldn't be allowed at pride, some clueless steven universe blog pipes up "what about captain holt?" and is treated to a barrage of "HE'S A FICTIONAL CHARACTER STOP BEING A BOOTLICKER." and maybe that's evidence of the more damning legacy of brooklyn 99, that for all its progressive storytelling, it's still a cop show. and even if you're a fan who knows most cops aren't like our main characters and they're just an example of how the system should be, that still makes you idolize the idea that there could be people like these characters who made you feel seen, and that they're working in the police force. that if you say "ACAB" you could make captain holt sad, because even though the show and fandom tried so hard to make the police identity secondary to their mission of diversity, the police identity has to come first in order for any real change to be made.
that's all i have for now. i'm sure i didn't explain things entirely perfectly and that there's major aspects to this conversation that i missed, but that's why i'm excited to read someone else's analysis in 20 years. i'm very curious to see what brooklyn 99's legacy will be like then.

Don’t you hate long video essays though? I thought I remembered you making it a point to always shit on Youtubers that made very long videos about stuff. I think it was Sarah Z or Saberspark or maybe some other Youtubers I’m not remembering right now. But I’m pretty sure that by now you have at multiple points stated that long video essays are a distinctly BAD thing for somebody to make, and you didn’t like watching them at all. What’s changed your mind over the past few years?
I’ve literally never said that? I’ve said Saberspark annoys me because he says the same thing on loop for 20 solid minutes but like that’s it?
Sitcom Anon, did you hit your head? How many fingers am I holding up? What year is it? How weak is your self esteem?

There’s four minutes left in the episode of 30 Rock when Holster’s hand, which had been resting on Ransom’s stomach, sneaks under the bottom of Ransom’s shirt, moving a little lower than it had been before. Ransom’s sitting between Holster’s legs, laptop in front of him. They're having a designated study break, because Ransom has a research paper due at midnight tomorrow, and he can’t afford to go fragile-intensive-obsessive-crashing the way he does if he lets himself work for twelve hours straight. So he takes breaks in the form of sitcom watching—“and cuddle time, bro”—every few hours. Now, he has to bite his lip when Holster’s hand starts messing with the waistband of his sweatpants. It’s been way too long—like four days—but he regretfully puts a hand over Holster’s to stop him.
“Bro,” Ransom says. “I can’t.”
“Because of the essay? C’mon, I’ll be quick.”
Ransom laughs. “Hot.”
“We were gonna watch another episode anyway,” Holster points out. “So we can like… instead.”
Ransom considers. His considerations are mostly: Holster’s hand, still on Ransom’s waistband, thumb stroking Ransom’s bare stomach; his warm, solid presence along Ransom’s back in the chilly air of the attic; the fact that Ransom hasn’t jerked off in two days; and Holster’s dick game, which is kind of incredible, fuck.
Then he thinks about the essay again. Fuck.
“‘Kay, how about this,” Holster says, pausing the episode. “Give me five minutes. If I can get you fully hard by then without touching your dick, then you, like, really need it, and we can fuck. If I can’t, no biggie, we’ll bang after you finish your paper.”
Then you, like, really need it, Ransom’s brain echoes in Holster’s voice. You really need it. You need it. He swallows.
Five minutes isn’t much time, he reasons. Holster can definitely turn him on in less than five minutes, but fully hard is a lot without actually touching him.
“And not,” Ransom says, voice a little raspy. He clears his throat. “Like, not some bullshit where you blow me but it doesn’t count because it’s not your hand. Or jerk me off through my sweats.”In the momentary silence, Ransom feels Holster grin.
But he promises, “No bullshit,” voice serious. He slips his hand under Ransom’s pants and pats his thigh, and Ransom says, “Wait, hold up.”
He fishes his phone out of his pocket and opens the timer app. His hand maybe shakes a little as he sets it to five minutes, but he manages to press ‘Start’ on his first attempt.
“Aand go,” he says, putting the phone on the floor next to the bed.
“‘Swawesome,” Holster says, kissing his neck lightly. Then he pulls his hand out of Ransom’s pants and grabs the laptop.
“Uh,” Ransom says, as Holster minimizes the video and opens a new tab. Even the way Holster is reaching around him, chin on Ransom’s shoulder to type enveloping him, is nice; could be kinda hot; but it’s not what Ransom was expecting. “Bro?”
Holster hums, then finishes typing the url.
Ohh. Okay.
“Unless you think this is cheating,” Holster says lightly, scrolling through the front page. He pauses over a video of a man blowing his partner in a club bathroom, then scrolls onwards.
“Nah,” Ransom manages. “That’s just making use of available resources.”
“Exactly what I was thinking.”
Ransom doesn’t watch a ton of porn. He’s never struggled to get laid, and when he’s going solo, he has a few choice memories to pick from that get him off without the risk of downloading a computer virus. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t see the appeal.
Holster chooses a video promising public sex, which isn’t what Ransom usually goes for, but he can feel himself starting to get hard anyway. It’s the combination of anticipation, pent-up stress about his microbio class, and being a twenty-one-year-old guy. He knows Holster is going to touch him, but isn’t exactly sure how; he takes a slow breath in through his nose and tries to think about anything except the way Holster is wrapped around him.
Except that now that Holster’s picked a video, his hands are free to roam. He sets the laptop down, then leans back, tugging on Ransom until they're pressed even closer together than before. Ransom can feel Holster’s dick against his ass, not even half-hard but definitely getting there, and pushes down the urge to squirm against it. On screen, the two main actors are sitting at a table; as Ransom watches, one of them drops to his knees underneath it and crawls to kneel in front of the other.
Holster kisses the spot just behind Ransom’s ear and whispers, almost a confession, “I’ve been thinking about this.”
“Having sex in the middle of a restaurant?”
It’s clear that it’s someone’s living room, but they’ve at least made the effort of dragging in a couple tables and moving the television.
Holster hums the way he does when he’s trying to figure out how to express something complicated. Meanwhile, he slips one large, warm hand under Ransom’s shirt to run it up and down his flank, while the other one idly grasps the inside of his thigh and pushes Ransom’s legs open a little wider.
“Remember the kegster last weekend?” Holster asks finally, tone conversational but mouth hot and very close to Ransom’s ear. Ransom tries to suppress a shiver.
“Uh, yeah. What—” Ransom’s voice stutters as Holster bites his earlobe. “What about it?”
“That girl who came onto you while we were dancing.” In the video, one actor’s dick glides in and out of the other’s mouth. Ransom’s throat is crazy dry. “She thought we were just friends.”
“Yeah,” Ransom manages, and then Holster takes both hands off of him. Ransom whines, which makes Holster laugh, low and raspy, right in Ransom’s ear, which makes Ransom whine again, until Holster’s hands settle at Ransom’s waist.
“Lift your hips, baby,” he says, and Ransom does. Holster pushes his sweats and briefs over his hips, and Ransom gets them off his legs.
“Shit, Rans,” Holster says, almost reverently, “your thighs.” He runs his hands up and down them. Very carefully moves a hand into Ransom’s pubic hair, careful not to touch his dick; starts to leave a trail of sloppy kisses behind his jaw, open-mouthed and messy. As Holster trails his fingers through Ransom’s pubic hair, tugging lightly, just enough to be a contrast against the pleasure of the moment, Ransom has to bite the inside of his cheek to keep from begging him to forget the game and just jerk him off. “What was I saying?”
“Girl.” Holster bites his neck, and Ransom ends up gasping out the word. “At the—kegster.”
“Right, yeah,” Holster says in his ‘horny but trying to focus’ voice. “Uh.” He adjusts himself, shifting a little closer where they’d drifted apart, and this time Ransom lets himself rub back against Holster’s dick. Holster groans, and Ransom does it more, until Holster grabs Ransom’s thighs firmly with each hand: immobilizing him, holding him close. “I wanted her to look at us and know. Wanted to drop to my knees and suck you off right there, so everyone would know.”
“Fuck,” Ransom groans.
“Would you let me?” It’s phrased like a question, but Holster goes on before Ransom even has time to nod vigorously. “‘Course you would. Way you were grinding against me, shoving your dick at me. So needy, right there for anyone to see. I bet you were thinking about it.” Ransom hadn’t been, but now he’s going to, at every party for the rest of his life.
On screen, a woman has shoved a hand between her legs, rubbing herself showily as she watches; the man next to her has pulled his dick out of his pants and is stroking fast, mouth open and drooling a little.
“Unless you’d rather have been blowing me,” Holster says. He pinches one of Ransom’s nipples, and Ransom squirms, making Holster’s hands tighten on his thighs, making him talk faster, relentlessly. “I know how much you love having my dick in your mouth. Maybe everyone else should know it too, see you on your knees for me, see how much it turns you on. You get so fucking focused, like it’s the most important thing in the world. And the sounds you make, ‘cause you’re getting off just as much as I am.”
“That’s so fucking hot,” Ransom manages, not sure what he’s referring to, and senses Holster’s responding smile, almost savage.
“Need them to see the way you want me,” he says, like he’s agreeing, then taps a finger against Ransom’s mouth. “Open up.” Ransom obliges automatically, and Holster slides two broad fingers inside, a solid weight Ransom fucking loves. “Suck, baby.”
Ransom does, and there’s such a relief to having something in him that he barely bothers with fancy tricks, swirling his tongue around only for a moment before getting to business, hollowing his cheeks out while Holster glides his fingers in and out. A line of spit traces down his chin, and he somehow feels Holster’s decision not to wipe it away, feels himself get harder at the thought of it happening in public, at a kegster, everyone seeing how messy he gets for Holster.
“Love your mouth,” Holster says, breaths coming quick. “Your fucking amazing mouth. Everyone can see how much you want it, how hot you are. How well you suck my dick.”
Ransom sucks a little harder, and Holster swears.
“But they don’t get to feel it, do they, baby. They all want to, but they just have to watch, because your mouth’s just for me, isn’t it. Because you’re mine.”
Ransom moans. Drool spills out of his mouth but he doesn’t care; the man in the video is coming all over his partner, and Ransom’s cock is so hard it hurts. Holster pulls his fingers out of Ransom’s mouth and shoves up his shirt to rub at Ransom’s nipple while his other hand drifts down to Ransom’s ass, spreading his cheeks, getting a finger against his hole, and he wants it so bad he might die.
“Holtzy, please,” he gasps, and Holster says, “Please what,” and then the timer on Ransom’s phone goes off. He throws his right arm over the side of the bed, scrabbling for it without looking—he doesn’t want to move out of Holster’s arms. It briefly slides a little farther under his bed, and he thinks for a moment he might cry from sheer frustration—Holster is still touching him—but he finally fishes it out and turns it off, saying, “Fuck.”
He twists around in Holster’s arms so that they're facing each other.
Holster grins at him, and Ransom grins back.
“So do you think you’re fully hard, or,” Holster says.
Ransom laughs, a sound that turns breathy when Holster finally—finally!—gets a hand around his cock.
“Please,” Ransom whispers again, and Holster’s face does the thing. He grabs the lube off the nightstand and starts jerking Ransom off, slow but solid, and Ransom’s eyes flutter from how good it feels.
“You don’t want me to fuck you?” he asks, and the question adds to the heat in Ransom’s gut but he shakes his head. He would, normally, but—
“I just wanna come.”
Holster lets out a weird, breathy half-chuckle. “Yeah, okay. Like this.” He falls back, propping himself up with his elbows, and Ransom follows him down, hovering just over him in a plank position. He lowers his head to lick Holster’s neck, which is salty from sweat, and smiles to himself when Holster lets out a little sigh. Then Holster takes them both in hand, and all of  Ransom’s concentration shifts to not coming immediately. He drops his head to Holster’s shoulder, then raises it again. Holster’s mouth is already there, because of course he knew what Ransom was thinking, that he wants to kiss now. They do; the little noise Holster makes when Ransom licks into his mouth makes Ransom’s toes curl, and he knows he’s not gonna last long at all.
“Fuck, Holts,” he pants, and Holster groans, “Yeah,” and pumps a little faster, and Ransom hears him say You’re mine again, and a moment later he comes all over both of them. Holster follows a second after.
They breathe through the aftermath together.
Ransom rolls onto his back, staring at the top bunk. “That was, like, really good,” he points out once he can speak again.
“Chyeah,” Holster says. “We’re kind of awesome at this.”
Ransom grins. “I love you, bro.”
“I love you too.” Holster’s smile is a little smirky. “And hey, that took less time than a 30 Rock episode. So you didn’t even lose essay time.”
Ransom groans. “Fuck, the essay.”
Holster drops a kiss on his shoulder and starts clambering out of bed, pausing the video that’s still playing on the laptop. “You can have first shower.”
“Thanks, babe,” Ransom says, and sighs. “Fuck that essay.”

Filler [Templates and Algorithms]
In my last post; I explored why AI might create random information to fill empty space. In this one; I'm going to ask the question: Why do we humans do it with such frequency that AI thought it was necessary?
Youtubeists and Video Essayists talk about their formulas and how the [Algorithm] prioritizes certain types of videos over others. YouTube used to give preference over longer videos {for unknown reasons} but now is pushing tiktik style shorts. (And hopefully going to get a big payday from the app ban.)
In essence; video Essayists all noted that videos of a certain length would get more ad revenue and created a format that other essayists could follow; that in turn created a [Meta-data Standard] as the [algorithm] saw that many viewers of popular YouTubers who were using this formula would also watch other YouTubers following that same formula.
That encouraged YouTube to suggest videos with similar metadata to viewers who watched videos with similar metadata. It makes sense if you think about how particular users use YouTube. Many use it as one would listen to podcasts; something that plays for a few hours in the background while exercising or doing productive things. Or in some cases; as a sleep aid [brown noise].
And so YouTubers adopted these rules enmasse because "That's what you do if you wanna be a professional and successful YouTuber." They had created what we would call a "Standard".
Now this isn't a new thing, humans have done what the [algorithm] has done manually; with things like magazine article length, paperback book length; professionally written letter length, educational material, even fliers have [professional] templates one would use if you want to give it that [Professional Tailored Suit] appeal.
Even essays written for High School and College have what's known as Word Count Minimums and Maximums.
The thing is; when You've run out of subject matter to talk about; how do you fill the space in order to meet those arbitrary minimums? What professionals call "Fluff". Entire articles, sitcom episodes, and even movies have been made with "Fluff Material".
And what this means is to fill the space with words that don't mean anything. This is part of the reason educational material sucks. There's a lot of fluff that ultimately wastes the readers time with absolutely no added value.
Fluff can take the form of several different variations; Repeating a sentence two or three different times or trying to add a joke that just isn't funny.
"The current president is topical, how about the poor unsmart job he sure is doing!?"
Or just putting a sentence that just doesn't have any reason for being in the middle of a paragraph.
I won't say that there isn't a reason for the existence of some fluff. Some fluff is good. But when every single piece is 89% fluff and 11% content... Well... AI is gonna mimic it.
If few word do trick, and convey the intended meaning; then why bother adding more just because you feel like it might be the better thing to do?
And you know what I mean when you've been listening to that same 10 minutes of a particular video over and over again trying to understand what it is they're talking about; only to discover in the next 2 minutes that the entire ten minutes was a pointless excercise.
Now I could go on and on about what different kinds of fluff look like in text. I could talk about pointless metaphors. Or over explaining a concept because you didn't think the target audience will understand, and ultimately confusing the audience further. Or I could just have written an entire fluff piece on fluff; and then ended the post with an entire paragraph of fluff to demonstrate.
