#i was looking at some of the dialogue between him and nora in chapter 4

I love all of the snippets you write about the characters! I was wondering how did Demetri react when Nora told him she was pregnant with MC? and Cali if it was similar or different? Seeing young Nora fall in love and knowing where the story begins is hard. My poor fictional mama :(
they'd been together for seven years at that point, married for four (nora proposed just btw), but they agreed very early on in their marriage to wait to have kids because she wasn't ready.
they werent trying when nora found out that she was pregnant with mc but she was happy and when she told demetri, he was over the moon, like seriously there are no words to describe how happy this man was. she was a little nervous about what kind of mother she would be but he would constantly reassure her that she would be great.
demetri absolutely adored mc; you never saw one without the other. most times, he would just take baby mc to work with him instead of daycare. he also did everything he could to make nora's life as easy as possible. and six years later when they had callie, he was no different.
i won't lie and say that he has the best reasons for disappearing or he should be forgiven, but he tried his best and he loved being their dad.

First Line Game
tagged by @shrinkthisviolet ! (thanks for the tag!)
Rules: List the first lines of the last ten (10) stories you published. Look to see any patterns you notice yourself, and see if anyone else notices any.
1. Break Glass In Case Of Emergency (Arcane, Post-S1, Jayce POV)  “It comes back to him in flashes.”
2. with echoes in my heart (tell them I’m lost) (The Flash, Soulmark AU, S1 AU) “When you steal somebody’s body, you also steal their thoughts, their memories... you steal their love.“
3. Between the Broken Bits (The Flash, S5 Fixit AUs) ““The guard tortured you.” Nora says. “I saw after he made me leave.””
4. which echoes belong (The Flash, Soulmark AU, S5 Fixit AU) “He almost doesn’t notice it.“
5. Meet in the Middle (Transformers MTMTE, canon divergence AU, Driftrod) ““No.”” (Ch1) “Rodimus falls.” (Ch19 - most recently published chapter)
6. Souls in Motion (Batman Beyond, Daemon AU) “Bruce Wayne’s daemon settles early.” 7. Nothing Of Roses (Revolutionary Girl Utena, Post-Canon, Anthy POV) “It turns out it doesn't matter how old she really is (she doesn't remember anymore) if you seem to be a fifteen year old girl, and the documentation you forged says you are a fifteen year old girl, people will think you are a fifteen year old girl.”
8. (Un)Concealed (The Flash, Soulmark AU, Season 2 AU, Harry&Cisco) “Harry stares down at the blue lines on his wrist.”
9. when I woke up without you for the first time (The Flash, Canon Divergence S1 AU - ‘Believe’ AU) ““... You know what would be useful?” Caitlin remarks. “Unmodified speedster DNA. Pre-dark matter. To really understand how this ‘Speed Force’ affects biology.””
10. So Wally Definitely Thinks Joe and Harry Are Dating, Right? (The Flash, S2, comedic misunderstandings) “So when some guy shows up on Joe’s - his dad’s - doorstep, and: -one, looks super surprised to find someone else there, and -two, immediately wants to get out of there when he realizes someone else is there - -  he can pretty much figure there’s been a scheduling mishap with date night, not a friend stopping by for an unexpected chat.”
Hmmm... patterns. Most of these open in medias res, and there are mostly short, limited context openers (e.g. ’It comes back to him in flashes.’ and ‘He almost doesn’t notice it.’ leaves you without context for what ‘it’ is to start) but a couple outliers that are packing a TON of information about the context of the story into one sentence XD Mostly internal monologue or description, only a couple of dialogue openers. These are really fun to look at together, thanks for the tag! If this looks fun to you too, give it a shot!

Hello lovely humans!
I’ve recently hit the 500 follower milestone and want to celebrate with another challenge! This time, dark fics are welcome!
I have a lot of prompts here and what doesn’t get used will probably be put aside for a future challenge. I like to make sure there is a wide array of prompts to be chosen from and tend to go overboard. Whoops.
The Rules:
1. Use the hashtag #JBBNN500
2. Dark fics are welcome - Just be sure to utilize trigger warnings and indicate that it is a dark fic.
3. Even if you aren’t writing a dark fic, use trigger warnings if the content warrants it. If you write something that has heavier themes, like those that delve into mental health topics, be sure to label it appropriately.
4. Selecting Prompts: Just let me know which one you want to do! 2 people per prompt! Tell me which subheading and the number of the prompt so I can mark it down! If it’s a lyric prompt, please give me the song and the number!
5. You don’t have to be following to participate!
6. Deadline: January 11, 2021
Yes, I’m giving about 3 months for this. January 11 also happens to be my birthday, so I figured that would be a good date to choose.
The subheadings are: dialogue prompts, sentence prompts, quotes from popular media, and song lyrics!
Find the prompts under the cut!
Dialogue Prompts
“Life is made up of maybes and regrets. I don’t want this to be one of them.”
“You can’t do this. It’s my choice to make, and mine alone. If you don’t agree with it, the door is there. Feel free to use it.”
“I used to be afraid of the dark, you know. Until I learned that the real monsters thrive in the light.”
“So, what you’re saying is if I gave you a nickel, you’d do it.”
“No, I don’t know how the cheese got there, and honestly, I don’t think I want to know.”
“You’re sounding more like a cult leader every time you open your mouth. Don’t think I’ll be accepting any Flavor Aid from you anytime soon.”
“How did you...you know what, I’m going to forget I saw a thing, and go read a book. Or bathe in Holy Water. Or both. Both is good.”
“If you say one more word I swear--” “One more word” “I hate you”
“You can’t come in here singing my favorite song and expect forgiveness, that’s not how this works!”
“No. You mean nothing to me. You never did. You never will.”
“But if it did, it would work and you can’t convince me otherwise.”
“You are simultaneously the smartest and least intelligent person I have ever meant. Truly, an amazing accomplishment.” @bonkywobble
“Next thing you’re going to say is that ghosts are real...please tell me that’s a joke”
“All I’m saying is, I could do that blindfolded.”
“But why was there pizza on the ceiling?”
“If you write me a four thousand word essay on why you think that’s a good idea, then sure.”
“I didn’t think you were serious. Do you know how illegal this is?!”
Sentence Prompts
Feel free to change the pronouns used to suit your needs, even if they aren’t bracketed! You can also change the tense if you need to!
The January rain fell, feeling like razors against [your/her/their] skin as [you/she/they] stared out over the horizon.
This was it, the moment where life as [you/she/they] knew it ended.
[His/her/their] gaze fell on [her/you], like a lion circling its prey.
You never thought that it would come to this, come to being the one to end it all.
You took a moment to calculate [his/her/their] next move, figuring out the perfect counter.
Hanging by your ankles from a tree was most definitely not how you planned on spending your Saturday.
Glancing around the room at the decor, one thing was obvious: it was [his/her/their] doing.
Hurt was the only thing you felt, the only thing you could cling to in this abyss.
Lies, it had all been lies and they were crumbling around you.
The screech of tires on the pavement sent a shiver down your spine.
He/She used to love this time of year, the beauty of it all.
It was like climbing Everest: ambitious, dangerous, and maybe a little insane.
Forgiveness was not something you were willing to offer so freely, not this time.
Chaos may as well have been the code name of this mission. @nekoannie-chan
Silence was your new best friend, one that never seemed to leave you alone.
That smile, that smile was something you could get used to waking up to every day.
Your face twisted in disgust as you realized what you had fallen into.
You were beginning to wish you had taken [him/her/them] up on that trip to Madrid.
Quotes from Popular Media:
With these prompts specifically, you can use the full thing, paraphrase, etc, since some of them are quite long, or just write something based off an idea it sparks.
“There are so many stories where some brave hero decides to give their life to save the day, and because of their sacrifice, the good guys win, the survivors all cheer, and everybody lives happily ever after. But the hero... never gets to see that ending. They'll never know if their sacrifice actually made a difference. They'll never know if the day was really saved. In the end, they just have to have faith. Ain't that a bitch.” -Epsilon, Season 13, Red vs Blue
“We're so arrogant, aren't we? So afraid of age, we do everything we can to prevent it. We don't realize what a privilege it is to grow old with someone. Someone who doesn't drive you to commit murder or doesn't humiliate you beyond repair.” - Daniel, P.S I Love You
“After centuries of men looking at my tits instead of my eyes and pinching my ass instead of shaking my hand, I now have the divine right to stare at a man's backside with vulgar, cheap appreciation if I want to!” - Denise, P.S. I Love You
“Life isn't just death. Don't ignore the living.” - Vada Sultenfuss, My Girl
“Life's full of barbaric customs. But I hope they all end with a kiss like that.” - Vada Sultenfuss, My Girl
"You're a little scary sometimes, you know that? Brilliant ... but scary." - Ron Weasley, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
"It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends." - Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
"I’ll be in my bedroom, making no noise and pretending I’m not there." - Harry Potter, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
“Sweetie, this is one of those times when I know what's right and everybody else is confused.” - Angela Montenegro, Bones, Season 3
“Oh, God. I'm in the middle of something, aren't I? Oh, look! Dead guy!” - Cam Saroyan, Bones, Season 5
“Don’t make it sound trivial when you know it isn’t. You keep talking about how we just need a little more time, but you’re not the one having to struggle.” -Nora, RWBY, Volume 7
“It's called survival. But I forgot, you two at best are functional morons.” - Crowley, Supernatural, Season 5, Episode 10
“I once had to judge a tighty-whitey contest for Lambda Kappa Pi. Trust me, I can handle anything.” - Elle Woods, Legally Blonde
“How were we supposed to know? It's not like we run background checks on all her boyfriends.” - Kathryn Kennish, Switched at Birth
“Don’t try to get on my good side. I no longer have a good one” - Ouiser, Steel Magnolias
“I would rather have thirty minutes of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special.” - Shelby, Steel Magnolias
“You have the handwriting of a serial killer” - Clairee, Steel Magnolias

I had books that I either loved or hated so idk maybe I need to do another unhaul to ensure I read books I'll actually enjoy.
1- OtherEarth (Otherworld #2) by Jason Segel
🌟🌟
So this was a big disappointment. It started out fine, but I had this bad feeling about what the twist of this book would be about 50% into it, and then the twist comes and it was just as bad as I feared. Honestly I don't even know if I wanna continue with the last book, I have it but honestly I can't say I am looking forward to it, it wasn't just the plot that fell down but the characters felt pretty inconsistent and yeah not a fan.
2.- Fireborne (The Aurelian Cycle #1) by Rosaria Munda
🌟🌟
The only thing I knew going into this was that it was inspired by Plato's Republic and that it was similar to Game of Thrones, so maybe that is why I found it pretty underwhelming. Like yeah I could see why it was based off the Republic with this system of education (tbh I still found it pretty basic and very much alike to other social systems I've read in other YA books) and there was some intresting tid-bits but not enough to keep me intrested. Now the characters, I liked both individually (unpopular opinion but I liked Annie more, I thought she had real potential but it was wasted because the moment she and Lee have this romance her character completely lost herself on thinking about him and what he did all the time) but I do not think they worked together romantically. There is some potential drama for book 2 but I am not intrested in reading it.
3.- The Mistress (The Original Sinners #4) by Tiffany Reisz
🌟🌟🌟🌟
This book was so good. Yeah it was super predictable, but the drama tho. I really loved Layla, she gave us an outsider's insight on Søren and Nora's relationship, and she is just the sweetest that I instantly knew she and Weasley were gonna get together. I cried at that last confrontation scene with Nora and Marie Laure and I am so happy that Nora is back together with Søren because they are truly a good couple despide everything.
4.-Gods of Jade and Shadow - Silvia Moreno Garcia
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I LOVED it. Ever since I saw the cover I was sold. This book I feel like it was meant for me. Like our protagonist Casiopea Tún is a dark skinned mexican girl of mayan descent in the 1920s who meets one of the lords of Xibalba and goes on a quest to help him retake his throne???? And on the way he falls in love with her so much he is about to forfeit his divinity to have a chance to be with her. I just, it was so beautiful, I felt my culture was really represented here, and it's so wierd to see the 1920's represented in Mexico I don't believe I had read something like this before and I will read anything Silvia Moreno Garcia writes from now on. Hopefully we will have a second book for this because that ending makes me wonder what adventures Casiopea will have.
5.-Little Gods by Meng Jin
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
This book blew my mind. The structure is perfect for the themes . Su Lan was a truly fascinating character though I felt very sad about her, always wanting to escape her past and thinking she was so undeserving for anything good in her life and still fighting to go on. The ending was so good, and all the cast of characters made an excellent conection between the past and the future.
6.- As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Yeah I am a pretentious ho. I was very intimidated by this book (and anything written by Faulkner really) and I was really having trouble understanding the book at first because the prose is so particular (there are sentences that read like Shakespeare, some are almost Biblical stuff and then most of the dialogue is this very coloquial english with very poor ortography) and as English is not my first lenguage I struggled. But then we get to Addie's death and all this odyssey the family goes through to bury her, and it was so beautiful and exciting. I especially loved everything about Addie's chapter, she was so much better than her husband and she deserved better than what she got. I really liked Dewey Dell and Darl. While I hated Anse Bundren with a passion so the end really made me angry like waaaaat this selfish asshole gets everything he wanted and then some??? But I got why it made sense for the book. So I definitely recommend this, but my advice is to let yourself glide through the book, do not try to understand or make sense of it as you start it because then you become frustrated like it happened to me at first but it's a really beautiful book so I am really considering reading more Faulkner.
7.-Chosen (Slayer #2) by Kiersten White
🌟🌟🌟🌟
I enjoyed this book so much. It's a very easy read and we get some growth on Nina and Artemis. I liked the idea of the Watcher's Castle being a refuge for inofenssive demons. And omgggg I fangirled SO hard when Oz, Harmony and Clem appeared (my fave characters, like literally I only need a Spike cameo in these books to be completely happy). I really wanna see Nina meet Buffy in real life and ahhh I am excited for whatever the next book will bring us.
8.-Out of Salem by Hal Schrieve
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
This is perharps my favorite book I read this month. It felt so relevant to things that are happening in the world, but escapist enough to bear it. For starters I love a good urban fantasy setting, and this was it. Z was a great non-binary protagonist (the fact the author is also non-binary also helps) like it was pretty original to make them a zombie when necromancy is viewed as wrong in their society and they get discriminated for it even though they knew nothing about how it happened to them. And their friendship with Aysel (lesbian muslim werewolf girl!!!) and Tommy (shapeshifter boy) was amazing. Like the way this book translates real life bigotry and social injustice to this magical creatures was truly amazing I recommend it to everyone of any age. Especially middle graders as this book is meant for that age group and I feel this is an amazing diverse read for that age group.
10.-Riot Baby by Tochi Onyebuchi
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
A book so relevant in our current times. So powerful and impactful even if the book is pretty short. We get to see how the systematic racisim at work. We get to get a glimpse of this awful reality through Kev and Ella, two gifted siblings that have lived this experiences in different ways and they cope with this in vastly different ways.It was such an intimate read I cannot begin to describe how angry and sad it made me, but also very glad I got to read it because we need to keep being aware that this is the reality for black people all around the world and they don't get to shy away from it so we shouldn't either we should see, learn and fight as hard as we can to change things for the better.
11.-Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I re-read this book to have it fresh in my mind before the new series airs on July. And I liked it better now than the 1st time. This world is so scary because I see so many realistic elements it shares with the present. I felt a lot for Lenina (for everyone who lives in this world really) because she wanted more than what the society had to offer yet was so deeply conditioned as to what was right that she could just supress her emotions with soma. This book is of course full of racist and sexist stuff (cuz woman and indigenous people can never win) but I feel it helps to get a feel about how fucked up society is as a whole. In the reservation woman are subjected to the usual slut shaming and gender roles we get in our society while in London we get a world in which woman are judged for not sleeping around and being happy and infantile. Like it seems controling woman and their relationship to intimacy and sex is always a bit theme is classic dystopic books which makes a lot of sense given it works like that in the real world too. Same thing with indigenous people being treated as savage to congratula te ourselves for being so much more "civilized" never stopping to think how deeply fractured and flawed this may be. We also get explotation and brain washing of working classes and all that fun stuff. Really and amazing book eerily accurate tho.
12.-Brick Lane by Monica Ali.
🌟🌟🌟🌟
This is the story of 2 very different Bangladeshi sisters with very different temperaments making their way through life. Nazneen is a very dutiful daughter that marries the man her father picked for her, moves to London, though her husband doesn't make her happy she tries very hard in this foreign country with so many desires of her own she wishes that she always supresses because of her upbringing. Then we have Hesina, she was always beautiful and runs away with a guy she was in love with, later he abandons her and she gets jobs and loses them because different man keep making her fall for them to abandon them later. Different as they are this 2 Sisters keep relying in each other through letters. I thought it was very moving, and I really liked the ending for Nazneen while Hasina left me feeling worried and unhappy.
13.- Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
🌟🌟
I was very hyped for this book and I am so sad I didn't like it. I just didn't feel the world building was cohesive (we have space travel but we don't have baths??? And rapiers as weapons??? Most of it felt like aesthetic decisions) the characters felt very one dimensional to me. And the plot was all over the place, just when I thought I knew what it was about it takes another turn and introduces so many generes but it did not feel natural at all so yeah I will not be reading the next one.
14.- Luces de Bohemia de Ramón Maria del Valle Inclan
🌟🌟🌟🌟
Me pareció una obra maravillosa. Definitivamente captura el espíritu creativo bohemio.
15 .- Don Juan Tenorio de José Zorrilla
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Chapter 82 Thoughts
Time to crack this egg!! Feels like it’s been so long, with last month’s chapter having released so early. But that’s alright! More time to think about it. I didn’t write this in one sitting, so I hope I didn’t miss anything. If I did, let me know!
The chapter starts out on a slightly confusing note, with Yukine talking to who I can only assume is Hiyori. He informs her that he wants to meet his family and friends, that it looks fun. She’s trying to discourage him from crossing a line where he shouldn’t go, by telling him that Yato was crying after he named him. She does her best to hint gently that his past might not be what he wants to see--that he’d be better off not knowing. He assures her that it’s fine, and directly after, jumps over the barrier.
The only thing I can guess is that this conversation didn’t actually happen. Maybe it was a thought process, or dream of Hiyori’s. Yukine’s dialogue here seems pretty innocent; almost childish. I suspect that it’s set up this way because of how Hiyori sees him. Because of his size, she initially thought him to be a quite a few years younger than herself. And I think that, even after learning that he was much closer to her in age than she thought, a part of her still believes Yukine to be young and in need of guidance.
This dream sequence is broken by her crashing into her door--she was most likely sleep walking. Her mother wakes Masaomi up to come help, who carries her back to bed. He checks her condition, and while doing so, inform her that he’s seeing the black ones coming closer. So much so, they are on the property. He suspects that their grandmother doesn’t have much time left.
There was some speculation that it could be for Hiyori, but I don’t think so. Hiyori’s grandmother was reading a rental catalog for home medical equipment, so I think her and Hiyori’s mother were discussing the need for one. It’s hinted then, that their grandmother’s health has deteriorated at least to a point where she’d need to go on bed rest.
Anyway, Hiyori then admits that even Yato said that there wasn’t much they could do about it.
Masaomi, confused, asks her who Yato is.
This of course, is a shocker to her. How could he forget, when he remembers everything else from the far shore, as she does? She gets worked up, but Masaomi has her lay back down. She has a fever, and has been sleeping all day. This is worrying, mostly because we know her cord is damaged, and her spiritual injuries are impacting her physical health. She tries to leave her body, but this proves to be unsuccessful.
It may seem worrying, but it actually looks like her injury is healing, at least. There’s less blood than there was originally, so perhaps she’ll be fine? At least, physically. I’m holding out hope. Although, I’m not sure if she’ll be able to leave her body again. I’m still wondering what Father meant when he said that he wanted Yato to experience unlivable despair. Like, why would it be if she’s going to live? Assuming that she eventually heals and is alright.
Hiyori recalls the face that she saw while fighting Father, and she comes to the conclusion that what she saw were his true features. No doubt, it was probably startling to her. I wonder if Father caused this to happen or not, for his true self to be revealed? It did give him the perfect opportunity to attack her while she was distracted.
But like Hiyori, once Masaomi is given details and reminders--by sneaking a peek through Hiyori’s diary in typical, insufferable sibling fashion--he recalls Yato. This leads me to hope that maybe Hiyori won’t actually ever forget Yato, completely. As long as she has something to remember him by, like documented events or people, she’ll be able to recall him. Masaomi acknowledges Hiyori’s prolonged interest in the guy, which leaves her absolutely mortified.
I want to make clear that I do think Hiyori will forget Yato and Yukine again, though. I don’t know how it will happen, but there are similarities in the textures Adachitoka has used to signify this occurrence. We saw it first in chapter 30, where Hiyori forgot them while spending time with ‘Fujisaki’ at Capypa Land:
Tumblr media
And now, in this chapter:
Tumblr media
In this situation, Hiyori is overwhelmed by everything she feels that she has to deal with. The longer she stays in her body, the further she gets from the far shore.
The scene shifts to Yato, with him wondering the specifics of how he’s going to defeat Father. He’s practicing his aim on an ayakashi, who looks none too pleased to be a part of it. It starts to chase him, and he seeks protection in the shrine where I suppose he left Kazuma when he went to visit Bishamon. Overhead, he sees Take flying by--and I think this gives him an idea!
We get a short, one-sided exchange between Kazuma and Bishamon, where we can see her shedding a tear as Kazuma leaves. I’m sure that she heard him some way or another--maybe she understands that he became a stray? In some cases, people who are comatose can still hear things around them. It’s not usually the case, but it does occur. She could also just be fading in and out of consciousness. Either way, Kazuma reports that she is healing well, so that gives me some hope that she’ll wake up soon.
Come on, Adachitoka! Give us some good news!
Yato informs him that they’ll be training on a person, instead of an ayakashi--and that person is none other than Take!
...Who is going around, warning the other deities of which regalia has fallen victim to the secret. He wants to get it dealt with, but he can’t find Yato anywhere. It doesn’t matter, though--it’s likely that all of heaven knows about Yukine, at this point. They’ll want to deal with him before it spreads. But Take doesn’t want to do it himself. As he’s complaining about this, he’s suddenly struck by an arrow.
Yato’s arrow, as we soon find out. Because we see Yato ‘cleverly’ disguised using a traffic cone with a face drawn on it. (The audience is not fooled.) While engaged in combat, we get to see that Kazuma actually has a decent array of skills--and they just seem to keep growing. He’s innovative, and works with what abilities he’s been assigned to make them even better. This is something that even Yukine hasn’t been seen doing, so Yato looks to have at least a fighting chance in defeating the sorcerer.
We are brought back to Yukine, who’s staring pensively at the gifts he received from Yato and Hiyori for his birthday. He’s pretty sure that he hit the nail on the head, because of how Nora reacted to his question. He resolves that if Yato is indeed going to target his Father, then he should wait for Yato to show up with him. But first, he’s still set on peeking in on his family. He thinks, as long as he has the charms that Yato and Hiyori made him, he won’t give in to the sorcerer.
Which, of course we know that it could go either way. It just depends on Yukine. However, seeing as his prime motivator is his past, I don’t think his resistance will be as strong as he thinks. Confidence is good, but it doesn’t guarantee a positive outcome. (See: The Heaven Arc)
Yukine heads to the park, where--by either mysterious or intentional purposes--he sees Father out jogging.
Now, as for what I think? Whether he went out to catch Father (perhaps Nora tipped him off where he could find him? Nora’s involvement is still a huge question mark at this point) or simply saw him out there by chance, I think he has an idea formulating. Father’s good at getting information.
So what do I speculate will happen? 1. Hiyori will forget Yato, soon. Or, at least to an extent. I think she’ll be okay, physically.
2. Yato will probably continue training with Kazuma a little more; I don’t see it being long now that he’ll confront Father.
3. Someone will arrive at Kofuku’s (Take?) to dispose of Yukine, but he will already be long gone. Possibly, Yato will be found and told, but even if he were, he still wouldn’t find him. Either way, I think Heaven will try to interfere.
4. There is a possibility that Father will tell Yukine that he would see all about his past, if he allows him to name him. That he’d be more than happy to tell him everything in exchange for giving him a name. Hey--he has to stick with him anyway to wait for Yato to show, right? So it works out. Father can be pretty persuasive, so I think we just might end up seeing Yukine agree to the terms and conditions. (Because who reads those, anyway?) And maybe, the name concealment business will come into play, as well.
I hope we get to see where Nora’s true feelings reside, in the near future. I’d like to think that, even if she is still following Father’s orders, she’s grown some fondness for Yukine, at the very least. I can’t wait to see if she has or not. I also hope that we get to learn more about Father, and what lead up to who he is now and what he believes in.
Also, I’m still praying that Bishamon makes a full recovery, soon.

RWBY Analysis: Who is the Main Antagonist of Volume 6?
Disclaimer: Contains intense RWBY theorising and speculation inspired by Volume 6 Chapter 9 that is subject to being made redundant should the rest of the Volume go along like nothing as follows in this post.
Tumblr media
RWBY has an interesting history when it comes its villains and antagonists. From Volumes 1 to 3 we saw a succession of rogues who fit the bill, each nastier than the last, from the likes of Roman Torchwick to Adam Taurus, Cinder Fall, and finally Salem. When it came to these four especially, and their criminal cohorts, the terms villain and antagonist went hand in hand. And with good reason, they were in active or indirect opposition to our protagonists’ actions, and their intentions and deeds ranged from petty theft to Machiavellian manipulation, terrorism and mass murder. Roman was a solid rival and foe to Ruby Rose, while Cinder served her role as main villain and antagonist well in Volumes 1 to 3, with Salem’s overarching series antagonist role revealed as a cliffhanger.
With Volumes 4 and 5, there were certainly plenty of villains but the role of main antagonist became somewhat complicated. As Team RWBY split up, most of them faced their own antagonist to overcome in various stages. In Vol 4 Weiss had her abusive father, Jacques Schnee; Blake had the White Fang operatives in Menagerie; Yang’s was at first psychological - the trauma of losing her arm and regaining her resolve to fight - and the second came in the form of her estranged survivalist mother Raven Branwen. Lastly is Ruby, who is sadly the most lacking in this department. Apart from her battles against the Grimm alongside Jaune, Nora and Ren, nothing came close to Roman or a potential enmity with Cinder, alas.
Now that RWBY is back together, things have changed. Cinder is now a month behind everyone else and unable to confront anyone. Salem is moving her minions into place in Atlas but doesn’t pose a direct threat to the heroes, though we will probably see Hazel, Tyrian and Watts out in the open at some point. Emerald is experiencing a crisis of allegiance, while Mercury seems to have chosen his side. Finally, Adam Taurus is as yet unaccounted for with no White Fang support to be found.
You could argue that we’ve had the threat of personal demons and some excellent opposing interplay within the group, such as Ruby dealing with Qrow’s alcoholism and despair, Weiss’s reluctance to return to Atlas, Blake and Yang keeping a lid on their issues, and everyone falling into despair and anger at learning of Salem’s immortality. As effective as these are, there hasn’t been a single villainous character directly or indirectly circumventing the heroes’ actions. Odd.
So, I ask again, who is the main antagonist of Volume 6?
My personal take might shock many if you.
Since the start of Volume 6, this character’s words, choices and unfortunate past mistakes has led to more problems for the heroes than anything caused by Adam, Cinder or Salem. He’s nominally on the side of good but has failed in upholding his mission and his stagnation and secrecy has become a source of fear, discord, disunity and despair, more so than any servant of Salem. I am referring to Professor Ozpin.
Tumblr media
Now let me be absolutely clear about this: Ozpin is NOT a villain.
Ozpin does not crave death, destruction, domination or the suffering of humanity. In the past, he was a kind and wise mentor to Ruby at Beacon, and a fair leader. He is ultimately someone who wants to put an end to Salem’s evil and somehow lift the curse, maybe once he believed he would be the one to finally do it. But now, he he’s a liability to Team RWBY, the remains of Team JNPR and of course his most recent incarnation, Oscar Pine.
If he had elected to tell the heroes that the Lamp attracts Grimm before boarding the Argus Express, and most vitally trust them, they might have avoided separation and being stranded. His constant omission of the truth, while claiming that it was for the greater good, is the same mentality that contributed to the Fall of Beacon. The more his pessimism, bitterness and double standard thinking emerged, the more the group’s distrust grew, culminating in Oscar briefly regaining control and revealing the Jinn in the Lamp. He was even prepared to use force to stop Ruby from asking Jinn what he was hiding. Overcome with despair and shame, he retreated deep into Oscar’s mind. They were left there to endure the Brunswick Farms horrors because of him.
I don’t blame him for retreating as he did, especially given the secrets regarding Salem. But when they finally reached Argus and the truth was revealed to Team JNR, he didn’t even re-emerge to come to Oscar’s defence from Jaune’s anger, and let him take the brunt of it. Again, there was no malice on Ozpin’s part, but in not intervening he allowed the rift between Oscar and the others to widen. In an older post, I said that if I were Oscar I would have taken my chances with the cold weather and Grimm rather than stay with people mad at me for another man’s mistakes. That came true in Dead End. So how is it he went from this...
Tumblr media
To this?
Tumblr media
The thing that struck me in the recent episode Lost was the reveal that Oscar had seemingly been waiting for the group at the Cotta-Arc house sporting new,  princely clothes and having cooked dinner for everyone. I do not think for a moment that that’s the real Oscar who welcomed the gang back. Absolutely nothing about what we saw in the previous episode, being threatened, isolated and emotionally dumped on naturally leads into him being relaxed, willing to reaffirm his mission to help RWBY, accepting his fate, easily forgiving Jaune and cooking dinner for everyone. Why would he do any of this?
Looking at his body language and choice of words, he seems too calm, confident and controlled to be Oscar. His new combat outfit lines up with the green motif shared in other past Ozma incarnations, even with the red flourishes and leather fittings. Also, take a read of this dialogue, and instead of Oscar pretend it’s Ozpin saying this to the group:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Many have said that this sounds an awful lot like someone with a terminal illness would say, and that this could be a sign of the Merge happeninng. But why is the story acting like Oscar is the one who will fade away, when Jinn showed the different approaches Ozma had to coexisting with his hosts?
Personally, I think it’s Ozpin imitating Oscar. He seemed surprised when he found out the group were looking for him, so how could Oscar not know why they were looking for him? For Ozpin, it’s a perfect cover since the group still doesn’t trust him but are are happy to see the boy safe. Asserting his desire to help extends a proverbial peace offering, while keeping the nature of the possession ambiguious. Also, isn’t cooking dinner for someone (or indeed twelve people) a pretty good way of making amends?
But hang on, how could Ozpin still be an antagonist if he’s promising to help the heroes and wants to bury the grudges between them? He’s not telling the truth and remaining entrenched in the same mindset that has weakened their efforts in the past. Also, if Oscar is being locked inside his own head and being used for deception this is certainly a moral breach.
I think Oscar would have succeeded in running away or done something much worse if Oz didn’t forcibly intervene. Such a move would be very in keeping with Ozpin’s pattern of actions; the idea of committing a little evil in the name of the greater good, i.e. to return Oscar safely  to the group he had to forcibly take over. Also, the omission of vital truths and maintaining an amiable facade in the belief that everyone is happier for not knowing the full story. There’s even escalating a dangerous solution whilst potentially alienating or endangering others and removing the option of choice, just like in Volume 3.
Tumblr media
It would be a cruel twist of irony if Jaune’s angry rant at Oscar in the house actually became a self fulfilling prophecy; “How do we know it’s really him?! What if we’ve been talking to that liar this whole time?!” By denying Oscar’s individuality when he was at his most vulnerable, he sowed the seeds for Oz to return and deceive the heroes into thinking Oscar returned of his own free will.
Now, imagine if all this crazy theory-crafting proved correct and the truth came out, Ozpin would have to contend with the wrath of RWBY and JNR, for duplicity, manipulation and subduing another’s will. And yet, unless something changes within him or his soul and Oscar’s battle for survival, there is nothing anyone can do. A once good mentor turned antagonist, with no villainous intent or goal, who cannot be challenged, driven away, imprisoned or killed without hurting his innocent host. Now that is a terrifying foe...
Aside Note: If it IS Oscar talking and this is something that he has decided himself, we didn’t see the process of making that decision for himself and go through classic character development or spiritual guidance to reach that point and signal his newfound commitment to the mission. This isn’t just a plot hole, this is an easy fix, and completely antithetical to good storytelling. After eight episodes where there were no easy fixes in the plot, why is this suddenly allowed? Maybe a character short could retcon character growth into place, but I have serious doubts.
Tumblr media
The one point I will give is the look shared between Ruby and Ozcar when she complimented his new attire. That seemed like a genuine Oscar moment and expression, and I could buy that he chose red to earn Ruby’s attention. But I’m still suspicious.
Thank you to all who’ve read this long analysis post. I’m sure the next episode has a very different idea from what I’m proposing, maybe a much less dark outcome, but this was a very interesting train of thought to indulge.

RWBY Animators Spotlight # 5: Asha Bishi & Kim Newman
Tumblr media
Previous Animators Spotlight Posts:
Joel Mann & Harley Dwortz
Ian Kedward & Millivette Gonzalez
Dillon Gu & Austin Hardwicke
Honorable Mentions
So far in previous Spotlight posts, quite a bit of time has been spent touching on certain animators that have been part of RWBY’s production since the first couple of volumes. And though I’ve referred to a handful of newer names in the web-series’s production, there are more who have become more involved that also deserve a mention. This post will be dedicated to two of those animators, one who joined the production in volume 3 and the other who joined in volume 4.
Asha Bishi
I said before that Volume 3′s production had arguably as big on an overhaul as volume 4. And while that’s true, let’s not dismiss what changes occurred in the latter. Whereas the third volume’s production underwent changes in terms of establishing and adjusting phases, teams, and positions, much of the changes during volume 4 were in terms of the animation process itself. Contrary to what some might think, Rooster Teeth had always used Autodesk Maya, albeit for just modeling characters at first. But volume 4 was when Maya replaced Poser Pro as the main tool for animation. As a result, various assets had to be rebuilt from scratch and new plug-ins and approaches to using the software were considered. This led to a challenge for the animation team, especially with the schedule cutting things close between RTX 2016 and the volume 4 premiere on October 22nd of the same year. But veteran animators and newcomers for volume 4 had tackled those challenges.  Asha Bishi, a newcomer during volume 4, would be among them.
Like any animator who starts small when involved in the show, Asha’s first scene in volume 4 was one of team RNJR’s various trekking scenes in chapter 2, where they talk about Shion village and Jaune’s trips with his family. This scene, as faint as it is, is where her way of animating in the show can be identified. Asha usually makes character animations feel snappy yet lively through facial expressions or body language while still maintaining who the character is, as seen in the way Jaune’s eyes embarrassingly shift around in her scene.
Eventually, her snappy way of animating dialogue-oriented scenes would prove to compliment the fight scenes she would be assigned with. One of her first bits of action-oriented animation were Ren and Nora’s successfully-cathartic attempt at pinning down and killing off the Nuckelavee. What sticks out in her shots the most is the way Ren indifferently yanks his father’s dagger off of the Grimm’s flank as he walks towards and defiantly deals with the Nuckelavee’s sudden attempt to intimidate him. We would then start to see Asha’s skills at animating fight scenes develop further within the volume 5 character shorts, namely Weiss’s. Some have referred to Weiss’s way of fighting in her character short as more of dancing than fighting. Whether or not that’s ultimately meant as a compliment or a criticism, some of those moments are simply due to Asha applying her forte; snappy character acting. The way Weiss swiftly unleashes fire dust, lunges at the beowulves and decapitates a couple of them with twirls and a sense of grace but cockiness are all intentional.
Now I bring up the matter of how Asha does character acting in both dialogue and action scenes, but there is one character who probably brings the most in her style, and that’s Blake Belladonna. But how exactly does a character as serious and emotionally withdrawn as Blake bring the most in Asha’s animations?
Tumblr media
The moment where Blake ditches her bow has been widely deemed as a positive note for Blake’s character within RWBY’s fandom. But believe it or not, it’s also been a great moment within the animation team, and it’s not hard to see why. With faunus characters, what could’ve been misinterpreted as certain characters having ears and tails as prop, can now be seen as genuinely-nuanced behavioral traits. Blake as a result has been able to communicate more openly with her ears and thus adds a range of emotion and secondary action animation. Believe it or not, much of how Blake and her mom, Kali’s ears move are generally reflective of how a real cat’s ears would shift depending on their mood.
Tumblr media
Now, none of this is to say that Asha is the only animator who does this, but you’ll definitely see a difference in some scenes in volumes 4 and 5 where Blake barely moves her ears at all and scenes where she moves them a lot. When Blake’s ears are expressed lively, there’s a good chance Asha did it. Besides Blake and Kali, this also extends to other characters, faunus or not, like Sun and his tail (these are the actual shots she did), Sienna’s ears and Weiss’s ponytail. Of course, she still animates well-emoted scenes for other characters in-between, such as Yang and Weiss’s reunion.
Tumblr media
There are two Japanese animators Asha Bishi can be compared to when it comes to the way she animates, Hirotoshi Takaya and Akira Hamaguchi. The former has utilized a swift way to express character movement in various anime projects since the 90s. Some of the works Takaya has animated for include the Magical girl anime Mysterious Thief Saint Tail (a TV series that fell into obscurity in anime compared to other shows of the same genre), the Shonen anime Kekkaishi, and the TV anime adaptation of the Japanese role-playing game, Tales of the Abyss. The latter animator I referred to, Akira Hamaguchi, often sprinkles a bit of frame modulation in his works, meaning he will go from animating on 1s to animating in 2s or 3s or vice-versa. Between that and his character animations having a sometimes swiftly and bouncy feel, Hamaguchi’s scenes have their own sense of liveliness to them.

Kim Newman
A couple of times before, I briefly teased mentioning about a certain animator gaining a lot of attention. And that animator I referred to was Kim Newman. Kim has developed a positive reputation within the fandom during the middle of volume 5′s run for very specific reasons, but more on that later. For now, let’s dive into when she got her start on production of the series.
As stated before, every animator who has worked on RWBY, regardless of how good they’ve gotten in the eyes of the fandom, had to get their start on smaller scenes somewhere and Kim Newman was no exception. During her first few weeks working at Rooster Teeth during the production of volume 3, she provided bits-and-pieces of both the Team JNPR vs Team BRNZ fight and the Team SSSN vs Team NDGO fight, with her very first animations being Nora showing off her semblance for the first time, Sage and Dew clashing, Gwen’s knives dropping on Scarlet and Sun’s drop-kick on Octavia. Judging by these shots alone, one probably wouldn’t easily tell this was Kim, given how back then most animators who had been working on the show up to that point were getting their sea legs with constructing full-fledged fights. but small signs of her approach to animating scenes can be seen, such as how the camera distorts a bit when Gwen’s knives fall toward Scarlet.
By the latter-half of volume 3, another side of Kim Newman’s animations would be seen through facial expressions. The first noteworthy example is Team RWBY in their dorm room in chapter 8, where not only do we see how she’s just as capable at character acting, but that she manages to sell Yang’s expressions through the first actual tears in the show. Not just comedic tears done in compositing or characters wiping their eyes with their hands to fake the gesture, but rather real tears. And this would be far from the last scene of that sort she’s done. Two other scenes she’s done that were even more emotional involved Ruby... witnessing both Penny and Pyrrha’s deaths. Yeah, these kinds of things she’s insisted on volunteering for, going as far as adding tears for Ruby’s reaction in the former scene when they weren’t even in the storyboards or animatic. Though what’s really worth noting is how she captures the expressions and gestures in both scenes at making Ruby feel helpless while making other characters like Pyrrha feel briefly content in her final moments before being struck. Also, fun fact: Kim had a replica of Pyrrha’s crown on her desk when animating the scene... okay, well, maybe not necessarily a fun fact. But this is all to point out how dedicated she was to mo-capping and animating her favorite character
The scenes Kim Newman animated throughout volume 3 would prove to be an signs of things to come in volumes 4 & 5 as her skills would not only improve, but she will also develop traits in her style that can be best described in one word: ‘intense’. From here on, the way she animated how fast and hard characters attacked and weapons and fists were swung would be more refined. She would also more often angle and/or distort the camera in a manner that winds up adding a sense of dynamism that would be seen among certain animators in anime. I said in part 3 of the this Spotlight series how Dillon Gu used the camera to apply a sense of speed for the character. For comparison-sake, if Dillon used the camera to help show how fast the character was going, then Kim used the camera to apply the sense of distance, to display how far one character was from the other they faced depending on the setting. This is made most evident in shots like Blake being flung to the sky  above the Water Dragon Grimm, Ruby dodging the reach of the Nuckelavee Grimm, Yang standing ground against the Ursa, and Weiss summoning her knight against the lancer.
Tumblr media
Kim still just as much strengthened the use of the camera in her scenes as she has character acting, where strong emotions are applied both during and outside of fight scenes. Though not as gut-wrenching as the stuff she’s done in volume 3, she still couldn’t help but find herself still working on scenes where characters are emotionally crying such as with Ruby and Yang’s reunion and Yang and Raven’s verbal confrontation, the latter of which she mo-capped and animated alongside another animator, Melanie Stern. And in the case of fight scenes themselves, she makes sure to communicate to the viewer moments where a character is feeling shocked, alarmed, angry, focused or in Tyrian’s case, playful. One of the best examples of this is in chapter 10 of volume 5. When fans think of that chapter and Kim Newman in terms of fights, they think specifically of the fact Sun is using his “gun-chucks” mode for the first time in a while. And while that moment was great to watch in it’s own right, it’s her part in Blake and Ilia’s fight that arguably better captures use of intensity described earlier. Not only does it fit the setting of the inside of Blake’s being set on fire as a visual metaphor for the heat of battle, but it even effectively compliments the fueled, angered voice acting done by Cherami Leigh as Ilia, a character that served as the biggest departure of all the roles she’s voiced in anime and video games.
I mentioned earlier that Kim gained a reputation within the fandom for certain reasons during volume 5 and when I say that, I’m referring to her position. Since volume 3, Joel Mann and Dustin Matthews have most consistently been credited as the lead of the animation team. By chapter 10 of volume 5, Kim Newman was officially promoted to Assistant Lead Animator. Though she wasn’t the first to be credited for this position (that honor goes to Paula Decanini during volume 4 who is now the director of RWBY Chibi season 3), it’s this role where Kim managed to help lead the team of animators who were brought on board during volume 5. Animators like Erika Soosaar, Jason Dickol and John Yang (or “NWBY” as she aptly put it) have in response expressed enjoying their experience working with her.
So with all of this mentioning about her skills and position in the web-series, what Japanese animators could her style even be compared to. Some may by default compare her to Yutaka Nakamura or Norio Matsumoto since they have done some of the most popular fight scenes in very widely-known anime. But the comparison can be considered unfair as both animators have had 30 years of animation industry experience under their belts whereas Kim has only had a few. Plus the comparisons can be seen as too obvious and broad. One could argue that since she’s gone on record that her passion for animation was inspired by the Shonen boxing anime, Hajime no Ippo, then she could be compared to say, animator Yoshiyuki Ito, who did certain scenes in the series and has done character designs for various Studio Bones titles like the 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist series, Soul Eater, Star Driver, Space Dandy, Concrete Revolutio, and the spring 2018 anime, Dragon Pilot: Hisone & Masotan.
Though a more appropriate choice, the two animators that Kim Newman can be best compared to in my eyes are that of Aito Ohashi and Takahiro Shikama. With the former, Ohashi has been fairly new to the anime industry, having made a presence in the more recent Pokemon XY and Sun & Moon series and Gundam Build Fighters with angled cameras and swift animation to give a feel of how fast and how far characters are moving about in a given setting. So that’s the comparison to Ohashi. But what about Shikama? Having animated scenes for anime like Kurokami, Star Driver, Sacred Seven, & most recently, Darling in the Franxx, Shikama has a way of timing punches and kicks to either be thrown or hit hard and fast. Every hit and sword strike capture great force, combined with fierce facial expressions.

Characters??? What are those????
I was tagged by @mortallyclassypizza to write, in no order, ten of my favorite characters from ten different fandoms. HERE WE GO! 1. Nora Valkyrie (RWBY). Literal thunder thighs, genki girl, obsessed with destroying things but still knows when to be serious? Easily the best girl from RWBY. "We'll break his legs!" 2. Tsuyu Asui (My Hero Academia) Yes, she's a frog girl. That's first and foremost why I love her. But she's also like.... Everything I want to be? She's strong, knows her weaknesses, but improves on them. Shes also extremely blunt, and honestly I wish I could have that kind of confidence. "You can call me Tsu!" 3. Starscream I gotta admit, Starscream's a piece of shit. But he's a lovable piece of shit. If nothing else, his (almost) constant attempts to overthrow Megatron are at least admirable. The only series I haven't liked Starscream in so far has been Energon, but I didn't like a lot of characters in Energon. "You may be fast, but lasers travel at the speed of light!" 4. Sentry the Defiant (Amory Wars) While I've gone on record saying that the song that features this man is "my song", I genuinely admire him. As a private in the army, he stood for what was right when he learned they would be killing innocent civilians as well as the enemy. Unfortunately this caused his untimely demise... But he's just such a good soul, all he had to do was let go of the past. "Don't close the coffin yet, I'm alive!" 5. Dimitri (Sly Cooper series) This is purely for comedic value, but god dammit I love the way this guy talks. It's like a mixture of Christopher Walken and every French stereotype in existence that never left the 70's. I'm incredibly glad that they let him become a recurring character but his dialogue is increasingly good as the series progresses. "This no small time favor, like "Can you water my fish or feed my plants?", This is big mafia, blood brother favor!" 6. Fafnir (Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid) Edgy dragon? Check. Edgy human form? Check. A desire to murder all humans? Eh, kinda check. His way of thinking about humans, that some are worth putting time into, is very misanthropic. So of course I relate. He's also a giant nerd, and the fact that no one bought his manga is sad, but probably for the better. "Just so you know... You're worth putting time into." 7. N (Pokemon) THIS POOR KID. He was born in the wild, had no real parents, and Ghetsis surrounded him with hurt Pokemon intentionally to warp his mind into thinking all Pokemon hate their trainers. It's the same thing as putting a young child around a group of people who all hate another group- this is getting political. N is actually one of the most well written characters in the Pokemon series, and I love his role in both Black and White and Black 2 and White 2. Overall he's just a great character and I want to hug him. "Tell me... Do you have a dream you want to attain?" 8. Jack Atlas (Yugioh 5D's) I'm a big fan of the king motif (if Starscream didn't tip you off), and that's Jack's whole career in a nutshell. On top of having the coolest looking Synchro monsters (TELL ME Scarlight Red Dragon Archfiend isn't badass and I'll fight you), his manga main deck monsters are all also based around this King idea, and it's just really cool to watch him play. Plus, when he gets character development it's done really well, as evidenced in the first half when he forms a relationship with Best Girl, Carly Nagisa. He starts off cynical and just wants it all to be over with so he can be on top again, but learns to value what Carly has done for him. It's a very tender moment.... That gets thrown out in the rest of the series.... "I synchro summon Red Dragon Archfiend!" 9. Miles Edgeworth (Ace Attorney) While originally just a foil to Phoenix Wright, as of the last chapter of the first game, Edgeworth is a surprisingly deep character. He originally wanted to be a defense attorney, but after the death of his father when he was a child, he trained under Manfred Von Karma and became known the world over as one of the most vicious prosecuting attorneys out there. But of course, he's not all bad at all. He absolutely adores the color maroon, as evidenced by his room, and regularly has a good quip. He's one of my favorite characters in general, and his charisma and attitude are just the best kind of egotistical. "Would you like some cheese to go with that genuine whine..." 10. Magilou (Tales of Berseria) ALRIGHT YOU ALL SAW THIS COMING DON'T LIE. I just wanted to save her for last cause.... Well, she is the best. Between being an amusing nuisance to becoming a genuinely powerful party member, her role in the story is one thing. Her depressing backstory is another thing. Magilou's had her heart broken so many times, when it happens again it almost doesn't faze her.... Almost. While she plays the role of an upbeat, no care in the world witch, she's hiding years of pain and hatred. I want to hug her because I 100% understand. She's just the character I love the most and I want to see her as a cameo fight one game. "You're late... Because of you I had to have a really boring conversation!" "No... That old man just really loved flowers." "Be brave, Breyve." "Ugh, don't you know how this works! Now that you've told us not to, now we HAVE to!!" I'm tagging @yugiohnineinthesky, @thehellspawnhero, @sailordelphox, @chibiwhitemage, @laughing-cr0w, @spookygoo, @kyoniichan and @korfury to do this. It doesn't have to be as long as mine. I'm just really long winded. T

Andy’s 2017 Television Report
I love watching good TV. I still feel there’s a stigma associated with watching as much as I do, but I’m trying to own it. I love TV. I would much rather watch an old West Wing ep than go on a hike or do basically anything outdoorsy. So there that is. And here is an exhaustive list of everything I watched this year.
Not Enough Time and/or Motivation to Watch/Finish Ranked by Level of Intention to Watch/Finish
10. The Vietnam War 9. Godless 8. The Young Pope S1 7. The Handmaid’s Tale S1 6. Search Party S2 5. Rick & Morty S3 4. Halt and Catch Fire S4 3. You’re the Worst S4 2. Better Things S2 1. Broad City S4
Disappointing/Bad The Americans S5 Starts strong, has some nice character development, but the main story was inconsequential and frustrating, as were several side stories.
Preacher S2 Has cool moments and I still love the three leads, but the main plot left me cold. Not even close to as good as the debut season.
Sherlock S4 Stupid and infuriating.
Seasons I Liked, Ranked by Favoritism 32 Curb Your Enthusiasm S8 Same old show, wearing a little thin but still enjoyable.
31 I Love Dick Obtuse, intentionally discomfiting, wonderfully acted; Kathryn Hahn is a goddess.
30 Stranger Things S2 A fun time and not much more, which is fine.
29 Veep S6 Somehow exactly the same cruel, cynical show despite a somewhat significant premise shift.
28 Silicon Valley S4 More of the same. Not sure how much longer this show can sustain the whole “awkward tech bros overcoming impossible odds” premise. Hoping for some risks next season.
27 Vice Principals S2 A hilarious, surprisingly emotional comedy that will always be stuck in the shadow of its predecessor.
26 Love S2 Rock solid cast, writing with a nice balance of comedy, drama, and romance.
25 Bojack Horseman S4 I like this show less than everyone else who likes it, feels like. Still, no other televised depiction of depression rings truer, and remains funny without making light of serious mental illness.
24 Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp Manic, inspired inanity.
23 Brooklyn Nine Nine S4/S5 Comfort food. Love everyone on the show. Every episode is the same and always will be and who cares.
22 Legion S1 In a year that hadn’t also included Twin Peaks: the Return, this would have ranked much higher for its crazy formalist experimentation, dazzling visual style, and sustained weirdness. Wish it had been more character-focused, and I hated the coda. Almost dreading season two.
21 Easy S2 Warm, human, real. Love the whole notion of a serialized anthology.
20 GLOW S1 Spending time with these characters just feels great, even when they’re behaving awfully. It’s the kind of show the predictability of which is a positive.
19 Big Little Lies S1 Reese Witherspoon projectile vomits pure green goop in this show. It rules.
18 Crashing S1 You love Pete or you don’t. I love him, have for years. The show is just more Pete.
17 The Good Place S1/S2 Quite possibly the most imaginative, innovate half-hour sitcom of all time; inspires equal investment in the characters and the ever-expanding mythology and mysteries, which is quite a feat.
16 Top of the Lake: China Girl Full review.
15 Fargo S3 By far the weakest season of the show, yet still one of the year’s best. Willfully disgusting and perhaps a bit too writerly, the last few episodes redeem some early rambling and formlessness. Ewan McGregor was not great in his role(s), and Carrie Coon’s performance was done a disservice by her appearing here and in The Leftovers simultaneously. But Mary Elizabeth Winstead and David Thewlis kill.
14 Ozark S1 Every 2-3 episodes contain enough plot for a full season of most other shows. It is wild. Characters at once inhabit archetypes and subvert them. I love how the main means of circumventing trouble is simply telling the truth.
13 One Mississippi S2 The best pure romance story on TV this year.
12 Future Man S1 Starts rough, slowly gets great. Consummately derivative sci-fi comedy. Couldn’t love it more.
11 Mindhunter S1 Spent most of the season deciding whether Jonathan Groff is terrible or magnificent here. Landed on magnificent, for the way he oscillates between ego states in response to story turns, negotiating his perceptions of both the concept of deviance and his sense of his own masculinity.
10 Dear White People S1 The number of characters this show balances is a miracle, and how it engenders empathy for all parties while maintaining its slick, ultracool visual style and exploring sensitive themes with the utmost nuance.
9 Mr. Robot S3 A vast improvement after the letdown of season two. Takes some weird risks that attempt retrofit current events into the show’s 2015 setting, and while not all of them work, the ones that do pay off massively. Plot mechanics are secondary to atmosphere, character, and theme. The cast is great as ever, and this year Bobby Cannavale joins the fray, which is never a bad idea.
8 Insecure S2 Continues to use top-notch production values and writing to explore lifestyles and perspectives previously ghettoized on TV, relegated to peripheral channels and the lowest of low budgets. Issa Rae’s performance is reliably loveable despite her character’s constant questionable decisions, but Yvonne Orji truly makes the show. Somebody cast her and Tiffany Haddish in something together asap.
7 Better Call Saul S3 Slow, methodical, pulpy, consistent. Another solid season of intricate, character-driven puzzle-piece storytelling.
6 American Vandal S1 The funniest entertainment of any type I consumed all year, and surprisingly thematically resonant as it progresses toward its conclusion.
5 Master of None S2 As funny, romantic, and charming as its creator. Tackles some surprisingly heavy subjects, has gained significant poignancy after cultural shifts that came later in the year.
4 The Deuce S1 An even seedier iteration of David Simon’s expansive storytelling style than The Wire, the period details of this show are casually perfect; unshowy and lived in. The Deuce convinced me that James Franco is one of our greatest living actors, on the level of someone like De Niro in his prime. Franco plays twins, and though they look and sound exactly alike, his slightly varied physicality always makes it clear who each is.
3 The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel S1 Such fun. A romantically stylized 1950s New York period piece starring a woman who should be, and might yet become, our biggest movie star. Nicely balances light comedy and light drama. Watching feels like cuddling up in a warm blanket.
2 Twin Peaks: the Return Mystifying, hilarious, infuriating, horrifying, wonderful.
1 The Leftovers S3 Not just the best season of television this year, but one of the greatest of all time. I have never been more satisfied by a finale. I refuse to write more lest I spoil anything. If you have not watched this show, watch it. The first season is flawed and difficult. The second is perfect, and so is the third. If this show’s premise even remotely appeals to you, watch it.
Favorite Episodes 12 “Amber Waves” The Americans S5E1 Bold start to an ultimately weak season. Features a ten-minute sequence during which a group of characters silently and methodically dig a hole, and somehow it is almost impossibly dramatic and exciting to watch. Here’s hoping the show picks up again for its final season next year.
11 “Chicanery” Better Call Saul S3E5 A courtroom episode rife with familial drama and series history exploited to maximum effect.
10 “Prodigal Daughter” Easy S2E6 A small, deeply humanist story of a high school girl discovering what she values, and how she wants to manifest those values. Lovely.
9 “Chapter V” Dear White People S1E5 Builds tension to a fever pitch using dialogue, editing, and camera techniques  downright orchestral. Directed by Barry Jenkins, of Moonlight fame.
8 “Part 8” Twin Peaks: the Return Several professional writers called this David’s Lynch’s Tree of Life, and I can’t describe it more succinctly than that. Lynch traces the origin of evil in his universe in a way no person who ever lived would except him.
7 “Who Rules the Land of Denial?” Fargo S3E8 For the bowling alley scene alone.
6 “eps3.4_runtime-err0r.r00” Mr. Robot S3E5 A bravura, (faked) single-take episode that brilliantly uses transit time to build tension.
5 “eps3.7_dont-delete-me.ko” Mr. Robot S3E8 The opposite of bravura; Elliot walks around with a young boy for most of the episode, and it is even more kinetic and exciting than the one with the single take.
4 “Amarsi Un Po'”/“Buona Notte” Master of None S2E9/E10 Heartbreaking. Aziz Ansari’s tribute to the Before Trilogy, and, let’s be honest, the Elevator arc from Louie, is brutal in its exposure of emotional truth. The chemistry between the leads makes the whole thing work.
3 “Part 18” Twin Peaks: the Return The finale. Mystifying, infuriating, horrifying, wonderful. Decidedly not hilarious.
2 “Thanksgiving” Master of None S2E8 A deeply-moving short film exposing a type of hardship so specific that I’d never seen it depicted before. The ways Ansari marks the passage of time throughout this story… just astounding.
1 “The Book of Nora” The Leftovers S3E8 Perfect. There is a monologue here with more story and gravitas than entire seasons of other shows, great ones. Watch The Leftovers.

Hi guys! “There’s no time to change your mind – the time has come – you’ve been left behind”. The final chapter of our beloved The Leftovers has come and I couldn’t be more sad about the end of these three amazing years.
Let’s start from the end. The ending scene is indeed crucial to understand the rest of the episode. The last dialogue between Kevin and Nora reminded me a lot of Grace’s monologue in front of Kevin Garvey Senior: they’re both older than before – some people is sure that 13 years passed since they last met in the hotel in Melbourne (Season 3 Episode 4) – and they have just found each other again after all that time. Kevin pretends he had only met Nora once, at the Christmas dance (Season 1 Episode 4), and that they never were together, and of course never fallen apart.  He stops pretending after a while, when he realizes that his plan of erasing all the pain they had experienced together wasn’t working at all, and he finally confesses: he had been looking for her for years, he had spent every two weeks holiday in Australia for the last 13 years without never giving up, showing a picture of Nora to every single person he had met. And now that he has finally found her, he’s not willing to give her up again. He apologizes for shouting at her the last time they talked, and for telling her she should be departed with her kids.
And that’s when Nora starts to tell her incredible story of how she travelled to another dimension, where the 98% of the world population departed, a world populated by the 140 million people who had departed from “their dimension”. She tells him she had found herself in the Australia of the other dimension, travelled by boat to New York – because in that world they don’t have enough pilots to make planes fly – and finally found her house in Mapleton. There, she waited for hours outside of her old house, waiting for someone to come outside and then someone did: her husband, with a new girlfriend, and her kids, older than she remembered, and happy. She then decided to go back to her world because in that dimension she was nothing but a ghost, and her children already had each other and didn’t need her anymore, so she looked for the inventor of the device that helped her cross through one dimension to the other and asked him to build another machine, so she could go back to the world where she belonged.
This was absolutely sad and heartbreaking and I felt so sorry for Nora. But I also felt that something didn’t feel right. I thought about it for a while, and then I started seeing everything differently: what if Nora didn’t necessarily tell the truth? At the beginning of the episode she said “I don’t lie”, but in fact she did.
I don’t think that Nora actually went through the machine. Let’s think about it for a moment… What happened when they invented the machine “in their dimension”? A LOT of people went through, 190 people used the device to be with their departed family members. So, if what she says were real, all the people of “our world” that went through the machine would now be in that other dimension, happily reunited with their family, and they would have started talking about this miraculous machine that can send you wherever your family went on October 14th. In a world where as much as the 98% of the world population is gone, people would have gone CRAZY. We saw what happened in the real world – where “only” the 2% of the world population had departed: people started to lose their minds, they started to join cults, to stone people to death, to worship a magic chicken, to bomb an island on the south pacific to kill a seven headed monster capable of ending the world, they bought mannequins looking like their departed loved ones, they put cities on fire, they started shooting dogs and worshipping a lion in a cage.
And there are more reasons why I think Nora didn’t go through the device:
1 – If another dimension populated by just 14 millions of people really existed, I’m pretty sure people would have reacted just like they did in the real world, or worst. And if there really was a chance to travel to the other world and join the other 98%, so many of them would have done it right away.
2 – Unlike Nora, people on the other dimension would have been sure that the machine really worked – because 190 people had already used it to reach them – and of course they would have come back en masse to their former world . But no. Nobody of the departed ever came back, not a single person. We would have known it if they did.  If that had really happened, the news would spread fast. But there’s no record of a departed coming back from the other side. Nora is the only person alive claiming she visited this parallel world, but there is absolutely no proof that it actually exists.
3 – It’s highly unlikely that Doctor Van Eeghen built such a device in a world where they weren’t even able to make planes fly. And he would have built another device just for Nora, with nobody else willing to use it…  And given that what she’s saying is true, how did she find Doctor Van Eeghen?
4 – Also, she was clearly yelling “STOP!” at the beginning of the episode, before the liquid inside could reach her face…
She didn’t go through. She just ran away, just like she was going to do the first time, right before finding Lily… I think she never believed that the device would have worked. When she decided to go through it, she just wanted to die, having a 1% chance of reuniting with her kids. But then she got scared and decided to stop. What she told is just the story she wants to believe in: the story of two kids who lost their mom but still have their dad and a happy life. She wants to believe in a world that is struggling to go on, but makes it anyway. She wants to believe that her children are alive and happy, and that they were able to start their life over, and succeed where she failed.
These are some other things that strengthen my conviction that Nora is lying:
1 – This interview to Damon Lindelof on the official website:
HBO: Why did you have her explain — rather than show — her journey to the other side?
Damon Lindelof: Because the show has always been about the stories we tell to make ourselves feel better.
2 – Nora being called a liar by Doctor Becker and Doctor Eden at the beginning of the episode
3 – Nora being called a liar again by the nun
4 – The nun saying “It’s just a nicer story” might also be a reference to Nora’s journey in the world of the departed.
After changing her mind and refusing to go through the machine, Nora gave up on life, changed her name and ran away. It almost feels like there was still a little sparkle of hope inside of her: she stayed in Australia, right where she had last seen Kevin, a very big country indeed, and full of people, where it’s really difficult to find someone but still not impossibile.
I think this is it, Kevin and Nora have found each other again and this time they’re not gonna let their relationship fail. Kevin proved to love her in every possibile way, and now she knows she has something to live for.
Honestly, seeing them together now that they’re old is a little unsettling. I wasn’t sure whether I was enjoying this final episode or not in the beginning. This wasn’t what I was expecting to see, I was hoping to see Jill and Tom again and I thought Laurie was dead, so this episode all focused on Nora and Kevin has really caught me by surprise. But it’s fine. I’m happy about them being together and I’m happy about how things turned out. Kevin and Nora deserve to be happy and together. It took them a long time to realize how important they were to each other, but this show taught us that it’s never too late to start loving again, to start feeling again and to move on. These amazing characters have lived in a world with no certainties,  a world that let everybody down in the most terrible way – by making loved people disappear, by making love a dangerous path to take, by making the creation of a new family an hazard – and now they’ve made it through and they’re all ready to move on. Some of them already did, others are just starting to put their lives together for the first time after ages. The real apocalypse was inside this people hearts, and – just like the world didn’t end – their lives didn’t either.
It breaks my heart to say goodbye to this show. It’s been a wonderful  three years journey, and I wish it would have lasted forever. Just like the characters of The Leftovers we’re now ready to face our lives after this little big Departure. But let’s pretend there is no end.
Same time next week?
  INTERESTING FACTS:
– The opening scene with Nora and Matt is one of the saddest and sweetest moments of the show: Matt is broken, he has lost his faith and he’s scared of dying. He’s ready to come back to Mary and Noah but he doesn’t know how to face his illness and how to guide people through this difficult times because he feels like he has no answers anymore. In this scene he’s trying to make Nora’s last moments funny, like he did when they were little. He’s not trying to stop her anymore, he just wants her to get what she wants. Matt’s story breaks my heart, because it really looks like everything he always believed him brought him to be alone, to lose his wife, his son, his sister and eventually his faith. He has nothing to live for anymore and he’s sick. At the end of the episode we will find out that Matt is dead and that he had a beautiful funeral, with over 400 people attending. It also looks like he got back together with Mary.
– Why are Doctor Bekker and Doctor Eden promoting their device? Maybe they are genuinely  convinced that it works. Or maybe they’re not sure, and they only allow people who has no more reason to live.
– Nora is wearing white right before entering the event chamber.
– AAAnd for the last time, we hear about Cairo.
– Nora into the event chamber looks exactly like the French naked man on the submarine (Season 3 Episode 5)
– Nora put hers money in a jar, just like K.G. Senior did when he left 20.000 dollars for Matt.
– Laurie and Nora on the phone look like two teenage friends, gossiping about a boy. ❤
– In this episode Nora and Kevin are dancing to a Otis Redding song. In Season 1 Episode 4, they met at the Christmas Ball, with another Otis Redding song in the background.
– Kevin tells Nora he has a heart condition and that he has a scar right under his heart due to the insertion of a pace-maker – just like Kevin Harvey had a scar in the same spot, due to the removal of the “key” that allowed to destroy the world on the other side.
– Nora frees the goat from the bead necklaces which represent all the sins in the world, she puts them around her own neck, taking her place. This scene reminded me of Season 2 Episode 5, when Matt frees the man in the stocks and takes his place, claiming it was his turn.
– Nora changes the paper towel roll, just like she did right after Wayne hugged her pain away. Changing the paper towel roll was the last thing she did before her kids disappeared, and she left it there for three years after the Departure. This time, she puts the pearls on it. This might be a metaphor: Nora is finally accepting all her sins and she’s ready to move on.
– Nora’s house in Australia looks exactly like the houses of Season 3 opening scene, with the Millerite woman.
  – Laurie is still alive and she’s holding Jill’s daughter in her arms. ❤ This is a big surprise, we were all so sure that she committed suicide in Certified and no one was expecting to see her again. We also found out that she’s still living with John and that Michael is running the church. Maybe Jill and Tom’s phone call really changed her mind and save her. She was also able to keep her promise to Nora – same time, next week –
– In the very last scene of the show Nora’s birds come back with the love messages. She says they are trained to come back home – so is Kevin?
The Leftovers – REVIEW 03×08 “The Book of Nora” Hi guys! "There's no time to change your mind - the time has come - you've been left behind"
