many meetings (or, the problem of interpretation)
the biggest issue when reading the Silmarillion and the Histories is, to borrow Reddit parlance, that many conflicts and many situations are firmly in the Everyone Sucks Here category. what side you find more sympathetic, and what you think the canon is saying when it relays particular facts, is going to depend upon you, the reader, and what you think those facts mean. this is a problem when it comes to productive conversation about the flaws in the text, or even about character traits that can be read in multiple lights.
consider Thingol.
(this is a long post and I apologize to anyone on mobile who doesn’t see the cut.)
I read him as a ruthlessly imperialist, conniving, politically ambitious king who uses his keen awareness of the threats to his people to advance his own goals and prioritize his own safety. by my read, he perpetuates Sindarin-centric linguistic imperialism, holds himself and his followers above the Avari by refusing to count himself among the Moriquendi, and acts with canonical racism toward Beren and Túrin and his Mannish relatives (offering shelter and clothing and food to someone does not mean you’re incapable of being racist toward them. Túrin grows up in a court where he’s constantly exposed to anti-Mannish microaggressions, and Thingol does not do anything to stop those things from happening, and Túrin believes that nothing he could say to Thingol will convince the king to take his side. Thingol also tells Túrin that the highest he could hope to rise is as a servant to an elf-king. that is, to me, blatantly racist and demeaning. you can tolerate sharing a space with someone you’re prejudiced against and still be prejudicial).
he also might have manipulated Beren into causing intra-Noldorin political strife in Nargothrond and might have purposefully held off on sending help to the Laiquendi until it was too late and their king Denethor was slain. he only opened his borders to refugees from places where his blood relatives lived, and he mistreated the dwarves who ultimately and justifiably killed him. I also think that the fact that Oropher left his court and immediately set himself up as a colonizer-king of the Greenwood, and the fact that Amdir drove the Silvan elves out of Lothlórien and established a Sindarin settlement there, means that there is a strong supremacist strain of thought in Doriathrin culture. Thingol, as king, does not do anything to contradict that indication.
(note: upon rereading Unfinished Tales I have to acknowledge that I fell victim to the very biases I’m discussing - there is no direct indication that Amdir or Amroth had a purposeful, significant role in the decrease in Silvan population in Lórinand/Lothlórien. that’s certainly my read of the situation based upon the evidence in-text, but there are any number of ways to interpret the facts that are laid out in the Appendices of Unfinished Tales.)
everything I have said can be backed up by textual citation. there is substantial proof for my argument. I could take it further, even, and say that by my read there’s no evidence that Thingol’s guilt and grief over Lúthien caused substantial personal change in him beyond tolerating humans at the bare minimum level.
that, however, is only my read of the text. it’s a very important read to me. I find it difficult to be friendly with Thingol’s fans, because I think my read has canonical backing and makes the story make the most sense and is based on what’s really there on the page and not my desire to make someone else the good guy. but, I cannot argue that it is the only way anyone could ever interpret Thingol.
someone else might say that Thingol tried very hard to get to Denethor in time and failed, or that the reason he objected to being called Moriquendi was because he and his people rejected the idea of the Moriquendi-Calaquendi labeling system, or that he didn’t know about the abuse Túrin suffered because Saeros and the others were bullies and bullies are good at lying. they might say that his ban on Quenya was because he was genuinely afraid that the Noldor would insist on cultural homogeneity and would disregard the needs of his people. they might say he made mistakes but he wasn’t purposefully prejudiced.
that read is also canonically valid with plenty of the same points I would cite in my argument now being used to argue a different interpretation.
now, I would respond that this read is based less on the reality of what’s written in the text and more on the desire of those espousing it to dislike the Noldor, but that is again my perspective, and they would doubtless respond that I want to like the Noldor and want to paint them in a better light than they are actually portrayed. this is incorrect when it comes to me, as I eschew all fanon in my analysis, but others would certainly be in that position.
why am I talking about this? because from one side, Thingol is an ambitious, power-hungry king who holds himself above everyone else and who doesn’t hesitate to let his political opponents die for his own aims, and from the other, Thingol is a careful, defensive, flawed but well-meaning king who is justifiably concerned about the presence of Kinslayers near his people.
it’s not about what the facts of the story say so much as it is about how we, the readers, approach those facts.
this becomes relevant when we’re talking about racism and colonialism in Tolkien, particularly in situations where the narration is biased or the characters express bigoted views, or when it comes to things that happen in the text because the author was himself racist. different people are going to come to different conclusions about if something is racist, why it’s racist, what’s racist about it, and what the fandom could or should do to counter it. if one group thinks Thingol should be portrayed as a colonizer and the other thinks that the Noldor are the colonizers, both sides can be equally canonically grounded. neither one is necessarily correct (although I will, of course, have my biases and my counterpoints). there are a relatively small amount of cases where something in the text must morally elicit one specific reaction.
the situation becomes even more complicated when you consider that many things in Tolkien’s universe are perfectly reasonable in-universe, and make sense, and are not racist or problematic, but they exist in the text because of the author’s prejudices. an example would be Galadriel and Celeborn being asked to lead Lothlórien because of Celeborn’s kinship to Amroth, the last king. (this is the version of events recorded in the Appendices of The Lord of the Rings and is therefore the most canonical account.)
Lothlórien was colonized by the Sindar (nonviolently, true, but that doesn’t erase the colonialism) and Sindarin culture and ethnically Sindarin elves come to be the sole occupiers of that space. the only lasting sign of the Silvan elves is the language spoken by those who live in the Golden Wood.
there are many ways to read this turn of events. a brief list would include:
Galadriel is an imperialist and a colonialist who wants to rule her own kingdom, and she takes this leadership position and is presented as a good and heroic figure by the text, which means the text condones colonialism and imperialism.
Galadriel is an imperialist and a colonialist who wants to rule her own kingdom, but she is and has always been a morally ambiguous figure who grows over the course of her character arc into someone who rejects power and rejects this kind of venerated leadership. this means the text is critical of her actions and we are not meant to interpret her as a good person.
Galadriel is an imperialist and a colonialist and this means the Noldor are colonizers.
Galadriel is an imperialist and a colonialist but is only part-Noldor, and assimilates into Sindarin society to the degree of marrying a Sindarin prince and taking a Sindarin name to be her name. this means that the Sindar are colonizers.
every marginalized person who comes to the text is going to form a different opinion. we all like to talk about these opinions and debate them and argue about who is or isn’t more correct, and many fans will assume their reading of the text reflects the objectively true interpretation. that is untrue. no reading is invalid, but no reading is the only lens through which to read a troubling text.
the only certainty in Tolkien, really, when it comes to racism and colonialism, is that he was a racist who wrote about everyone in problematic ways and he has a history of ambiguity when it comes to colonialism. nothing else can be counted on, and nothing else should be taken as fundamental truth. this is the Silmarillion. no one here is a truly good person, except for Beren and Lúthien and Rían, and trying to argue that the truth is that one side or the other is more virtuous will accomplish nothing in the end.

“hey google? whats social interaction?”
two fics in one day hell yeah. this time it’s for an AU i don’t think i’ve talked about here, called the Shy!Wukong AU, in which 500 years of isolation had the consequence of absolutely destroying Wukong’s social skills and confidence.

When MK arrived on Flower Fruit Mountain that afternoon, it was quiet. He walked around for a few minutes, enjoying the silence, a big difference from the constant sound of the city, before sighing.
He walked over and leaned against a tree, barely hearing the soft intake of breath from behind it.
"I know you're there, Monkey King." He sighed again, taking the staff out and twirling it. "I could see your tail y'know."
Wukong slowly emerged from behind him, walking around the tree to stand just outside of MK's reach. MK purposefully didn't look at him, but out of the corner of his eye he could see that his mentor was avoiding eye contact.
"Ah, uh, yeah uh, hey bud." Wukong said, "I uh, didn't know you were here-"
"You were meant to come hang out with me and my friends today." MK said, and Wukong slumped. "I understand having some days were you're just not up for interacting, but this is the third time. ...Why won't you interact with my friends?"
He asked this as gently as he could, but still Wukong shrunk back a little.
"They....they can sense weakness..." Wukong muttered, and now MK did look at him, with confusion.
"Wh- no they don't- well, Mei might, but still." He pushed off the tree, turning to face Wukong fully. "You seriously need to get some more social interaction- it'll help you be more confident again!"
Wukong opened his mouth as though to speak-
"Fighting Macaque that one time doesn't count as social interaction." MK deadpanned, watching unimpressed as Wukong nervously scratched the side of his face. "....Tell you what, if you come with me and Mei shopping tomorrow, I'll get off your case for a week. Does that sound okay?"
"...Yeah..." Wukong quietly gave his assent, and MK beamed.
"Great! Now, are we going to do training?"
"I didn't plan anything out though...."
"That's okay, we can just spar!"
-
Wukong was 20 minutes late.
MK glanced at his watch again just to make sure that he was reading the time right, before looking back over to Mei. She was playing some game or other on her phone, looking bored.
"Y'know, I'm starting to think Mr. Monkey King might be scared of me." Mei said after another minute went by with still no sign of Wukong.
"Honestly, you might not be too far off from the truth there." MK admitted, "I was half expecting him to at least send a clone, but he must know that I catch on to that immediately now."
"Do you think he's alright?" Mei put her phone back in her pocket, now glancing at the sky with concern. "Like, he didn't freak too much over it and hole himself up in his room or something again, did he?"
"No, he's already met you once, so I don't think it'd be that bad again." MK pulled the staff out of his pocket, contemplating for a moment. "...Hey Mei, how would you like a trip to Flower Fruit Mountain?"
"I would love to." Mei smirked, before turning around and entering the mall, grabbing hold of the back of MK's hoodie to drag him in along with her. "But first, we're gonna need some supplies!"
-
When MK and Mei arrived on Flower Fruit Mountain, it was once again quiet.
"Okay." MK shifted the bag he was carrying on his arm, adjusting his grip. "He's probably up in his little house behind the waterfall. He probably knows we're here by now, so..."
"So all we have to do is find him." Mei finished, "Don't worry MK, I remember the plan."
"Right. Okay." They passed through the water fall, walking through the cave. Standing in front of Wukong's door, MK set his bag on the ground in order to lift his arm and knock.
One of the younger monkeys opened the door.
"Hey there!" MK said, "Is Monkey King here?"
The tiny monkey chitters out a response MK interprets as yes, moving aside to let Mei and MK through. Mei easily finds her way into the kitchen, and MK can hear the clattering of some pots and pans as she shuffles things around (they'd bought some hot chocolate, and apparently Mei refused to wait any longer before making it). MK, meanwhile, sets his bag down by the door and starts looking for Wukong.
It ends up not being very hard really, as he finds his mentor laying on the couch, a blanket pulled over top of his head, his tail poking out and resting on the floor, stiff.
...Too stiff.
"Monkey King?" MK asks, and he sees the fur on Wukong's tail bristle, but yet the monkey himself doesn't move. "I know you're awake."
Wukong says something entirely incoherent.
"Me and Mei are here to have a sleepover, if you're wondering." MK says, "Since you didn't come shopping with us."
There's no response.
Suddenly Mei curses, and there's a loud clatter in the kitchen. MK turns, suitably distracted.
"Y'alright?" He yells.
"Fine! Monkey King just has horrible sorting skills is all!" Is the response he gets, and MK quietly chuckles because, well, she's not wrong.
When he turns back around, Wukong is out from under the blanket, standing up, his usual nervous smile plastered on his face.
...But something's off. His back is too straight, for one, the Monkey King that MK knows is normally slightly slouched. The look in his eyes doesn't show shyness either, rather an attempt at faking being shy.
MK makes his deduction in less than a second.
"You're a clone aren't you."
"Oh thank heavens." The Wukong clone, relaxes just slightly, the nervous smile slipping off in favor of a more relaxed, natural one. (One that, notably, MK has only seen on Wukong's clones. Well, he thinks he saw his mentors real smile once, but Wukong had left rather fast after that, so MK had never been actually sure.) "I wasn't sure how long I could pretend to be nervous for."
"He's trying to bail again, huh." MK said, not even surprised, having mostly known this would happen. 500 years by himself had really taken it's toll on the Monkey King, MK still wasn't sure how exactly Wukong had lost his confidence, but the consequences of whatever it was were fairly obvious. It had taken forever for MK to actually get his mentor to just have normal conversations with him instead of just leaving him sticky notes with instructions on them. During that time, Wukong had run away from MK *multiple* times.
Well, not tonight. MK personally respected Wukong's lack of knowledge on how to be social, and knew first hand the experience of not feeling up to interacting with people. But if Wukong didn't at least try to step over his comfort zone, then he'd never become confident again.
Wukong's clone seemed to have the same idea, as he turned, walking off down a hallway. MK heard a door open- followed by a yelp of betrayal, and then the clone was back, carrying a flustered Monkey King over his shoulder, dumping him onto the couch before vanishing, just as Mei entered the living room with a tray covered in candies, as well as three mugs of hot chocolate.
"Did I miss anything?" She asks, setting the tray down on the coffee table, before sitting on the couch to the left of Wukong. The Monkey King actually squeaked, shifting to move to the other side, only to be stopped by MK sitting on his right. Almost as though they'd planned it, they both leaned up against Wukong simultaneously, feeling how he stiffened at the sudden contact.
"Did you get the remote?" Mei asked, sipping at her hot chocolate.
"Yep." MK held the remote up with one hand, easily accessing Wukong's Netflix account. (He'd accidentally stumbled upon the password one of the times the monkeys had shoved him into the house in an attempt to help him interact with Wukong.) "What do you want to watch?"
"Hm, dunno. What do you think, Mr. Monkey King?"
Wukong didn't respond. He still hadn't relaxed either. His eyes looked slightly unfocused, and MK could practically hear the computer crashing noises.
Jeez. Wukong was a lot more touch-starved than he had thought.
And then Wukong moved, sliding down a little, covering his face with his hands. Mei and MK shared a look of concern.
Maybe this much contact was a bit too much to start?
MK leaned away from Wukong, putting just the slightest bit of distance between them, Mei following his lead soon after.
They were both quiet for a moment, silently considering what to do next as Wukong continued to not look at them.
...And then Mei grabbed the pillow behind her, slowly raising it over her head.
MK barely had the time to register what she was doing before the pillow smacked him in the face.
Mei burst out laughing at MK's surprised look, jumping up off the couch, pulling more pillows out of...somewhere. MK hadn't seen her grab them, but they were certainly there now.
He ducked down, sliding off the couch as a pillow soared over his head, flopping against the couch cushions, having not met it's target. He barely managed to shift out of the way of a second pillow, catching a third before it could hit him in the chest.
"Oh it is on!" He cheered, spinning around before throwing the pillow at Mei as hard as he could.
Soon enough the pillow fight increased to all out warfare, more pillows seemingly appearing out of nowhere. MK laughed, nearly forgetting about Wukong-
And then a pillow hit him in the back of the head.
Both he and Mei paused, knowing for a fact that Mei hadn't thrown it, she was in front of him, getting him from behind was impossible.
MK turned around just in time to see Wukong create another pillow out of one of his hairs and throw it.
When MK pulled the pillow off of his face, he was greeted with Wukong's nervous smile, and a bit of anxious laughter.
MK glanced at Mei.
Well. This wasn't exactly the way they had planned to help Wukong come out of his shell a bit, but it could work.
-
Sleepovers became more frequent after that. Typically they ended up with just a pillow fight, but still, it was some progress, however small.
MK and his friends were more than content to take things slow, let Wukong relearn how to socially interact and overcome his shyness the normal way.
And then New Years happened.
Wukong was still definitely not comfortable interacting with anyone other than Mei, MK, and Sandy, but he did start showing up a bit more frequently. (MK had noticed that Wukong tried his hardest to be more confident around Pigsy. He wasn't sure as to why Wukong did so, but he did. Pigsy himself seemed concerned about it as well, but for the most part let it slide). MK sometimes couldn't help but feel that his mentor seemed a bit...worried about something. But whenever he asked, Wukong would just clam up, sometimes even going so far as to distract MK before teleporting away.
But whatever. It was fine, they were making progress. Wukong was actually somewhat talking to people now, albeit he was still quiet, and easily flustered at the smallest of things. (Tang had briefly mentioned how impressive Wukong's feats were in an offhand sentence, and the Monkey King had practically shut down for an entire half an hour.)
...Unlike MK and the others however, Demon Bull King was more than slightly concerned.
The New Years Incident had been his first time seeing the Monkey King since 500 years ago, and needless to say, he was not what he expected.
He remembered Wukong being boastful, confident, easily coming up with snarky quips left and right.
So it was definitely a shock when, instead of annoyingly chatting or created stupid jokes while captured by Spider Queen, Wukong had simply sat there, quiet, a light blush dusting his face as he sulked, embarrassed over having gotten caught.
Demon Bull King could only wonder what in the world could've happened that would've rendered the Monkey King so shy.
He'd shared his concerns with his family, of course, in a roundabout, thinly veiled way. (He had been fairly certain that the monkey of the conversation had actually been spying on them at the time). Princess Iron Fan had commented about seeing Red Son in a slightly similar state, considering how he never could seem to hold an actual conversation with MK or Mei, instead always challenging them to a battle. (She was concerned, for her son. She'd known that staying in his lab, working on inventions day in and day out would definitely be bad for his social skills, but Red Son had been so stubborn at the time that there'd been nothing she could do.)
Red Son, of course, entirely missed hearing the conversation about himself.
He did however, hear the one about Wukong.
Which, of course, led to-
"Wake up, simian!"
Wukong startled, rolling out of bed, falling to the floor, his blankets falling on top of him and obscuring his vision. He scrambled for a minute, trying to get his bearings as he struggled with the blankets, trying to clear his vision.
A light laugh made him freeze, suddenly glad for the blankets covering him as he felt his face flush as he realized he wasn't alone.
"Seriously? This is the great, powerful Monkey King everyone is afraid of?"
It took a moment for him to place the voice, slowly lifting the blankets up, keeping his head hung low as he checked to make sure.
Bright red jacket. The faint smell of smoke.
Red Son.
Wukong looked away, trying to pull up every inch of confidence he'd regained.
"....How'd you get into my house?" Is what he ended up saying, and he mentally patted himself on the back for not having his voice break mid sentence.
"Please, it's not like it's that difficult."
"There's a whole entire waterfall sealing the place."
"Which is very easy to by pass if you know how."
Wukong couldn't come up with a response for that, instead forcing himself to stand up, trying to put a normal smile on his face, but knowing it would probably only end up being his usual nervous one.
"Uh, um. Why are you here?" He finally asked.
"Well, uh, my father is worried about you so I'm here to help you or....whatever.... something like that..." Red Son said, getting a bit quieter and trailing off towards the end of his sentence.
"I-" Suddenly, irritation overcame Wukong's shyness and anxiety. "You- you're just as bad as I am!"
(Demon Bull King had been right. Wukong had been spying on them during that conversation. He'd originally planned on going over to talk to them, but then, well, as usual he'd panicked, and ended up listening in the rafters while waiting for an opportunity to leave unnoticed.
...That had been a long day.)
Red Son spluttered for a moment, before pulling himself together.
"I am not." He hissed, the edges of his hair sparking.
"You socialize with my successor by fighting him because you don't know how to ask him and Mei to hang out outside of battling." Wukong deadpanned, "And no, battles do not count as social interaction, according to MK."
There was a pause, where they both went silent, staring at each other, waiting for the next move.
An hour later, and they were both sitting on the floor of Wukong's bedroom, both of them looking slightly frazzled.
"I mean, just." Red Son said, "How do you talk to people?!"
"I literally have no idea." Wukong sounded just as stressed and dismayed as Red Son. "I mean, MK and his friends have been trying, and like, I guess it's been working, because they haven't complained about me yet, but still, just, what is social interaction??"
"I don't know!" Red Son groaned, holding his head in his hands. "If- if only we had someone who was really good at social interaction, someone we could copy-"
"Like MK?" Wukong asked, before immediately dismissing the idea in his next sentence. "No, no, he'd pick up on what we're doing and either make us stop or call us out on it way too fast...."
"Agreed, we definitely cannot use the Noodle Boy or his friends as an example." Red Son muttered, "But....to be honest with you, I don't know many other people."
"...Me either." Wukong flopped backwards to lay on the floor, both of them sighing in defeat.
And then Wukong, tensed sitting back up, a thoughtful but also very reluctant look on his face.
"...Actually, there is one person we might be able to go to..."
-
"...What's being social?"
Wukong and Red Son both looked at their last hope of a savior in dismay.
Macaque stared back with an equivalent amount of confusion.
The three of them sat in the middle of a small park, partially hidden from passerby by a line of bushes. Macaque wasn't even entirely sure how he'd gotten there, and wasn't even close to having a clue as to what was going on.
"What do you mean you don't know- you socialize literally every day!" Wukong threw his hands up into the air, in a mixture of anger and defeat.
"You alone are literally responsible for over half of the city's parties." Red Son added, "How can you not know how to be social when you're the perfect example of a social butterfly?"
"I don't know." Macaque shrugged. If anything, this reaction seemed to cause Red Son and Wukong more distress.
"So you're saying you.... don't actually know how to socially interact?"
"Uh, no?" Macaque leaned back, crossing his arms. "I kinda just go along with whatever happens so- wait why are you crying."
Red Son looked to his left to see that, oh, uh, Wukong was crying. He didn't seem like he wanted to be, if the way he was hiding his face behind his hands and trying to muffle his sobs was any indication, but he definitely was.
"You were our last hope of understanding social interaction." Wukong muttered, voice muffled by his hands. Red Son awkwardly hovered his hand over Wukong's shoulder, knowing that the other still wasn't entirely used to touch.
"...Aren't the both of you interacting with me ri-" Macaque was abruptly cut off as something grabbed him by the back of his scarf, pulling him back into the bush. Red Son was too focused on Wukong, and Wukong was too busy trying to stop crying, to notice the sudden disappearance.
Macaque landed on his back, spitting out a stray leaf as he looked up at MK. (He'd known Wukong's successor was spying on them, he'd heard him hide behind the bush. Still though, randomly grabbing him was a little bit annoying).
"You can't tell them that they're socially interacting." MK hissed, quiet enough that the other two couldn't hear him. Macaque raised an eyebrow in confusion.
"Any particular reason as to why?"
"If you tell them they're actually interacting it's like- it's like Cinderella when the clock hits midnight, they both go back to being easily flustered recluses." MK said, "You've got to keep them going without realizing what they're doing for as long as possible."
"...Okay???" Honestly, this didn't clear things up for Macaque at all, but he wasn't going to try and argue with MK now.
MK let go off his scarf, and Macaque returned to his position in front of Wukong and Red Son, adding an extra glamour over top of himself so that his little trip through the bush would be entirely unnoticeable. Funnily enough, neither of them seemed to have noticed his temporary disappearance.
"So uh....wanna keep not-socializing with me at that cafe over there?" Macaque pointed over his shoulder at a nearby place he liked to visit. If he was going to do this, he was going to need another dose of caffeine. "I can maybe try and figure out some tips for you?"
"Yes please." Wukong and Red Son said in sync, already standing up and moving towards the cafe. Macaque stood up shortly after them.
Quietly, watching them walk in front of him, he thought; 'They're idiots.'
-
"Wukong, why are you hiding your face, Red Son's the one that just face planted while walking through a door!"
The Monkey King's response was completely incoherent, afflicted with second-hand embarrassment. Both he and Red Son refused to look Macaque in the eye.
The shadow monkey sighed, almost tempted to teleport away to find somewhere nice to scream.
MK better find a good way of paying him back for this.

Meta: Echo’s Big Fight in 3x09
Let's talk about the Big Echo fight. Because wandering around in the fandom this past week, I’ve seen a lot of very specific conclusions as far as what they were or weren't arguing about, and I’m not sure my take on that scene really aligns with other folks. So let me try to break it down a bit and give y’all an alternative perspective on it.
To start with, the scene opens with Max on edge because they're breaking and entering. Liz is singularly focused on the mission, and he's kinda freaking out. Instead of responding to his concerns, Liz gets straight to business.
"Ooh, ooh, this is interesting. Heath left Genoryx two days after I did. Must have realized he didn't need to be working underneath their corporate thumb."
Liz is kinda projecting here. Heath never once displayed any discomfort with Genoryx as a company the way that she did. He wanted her to stay. He wanted the resources there. We know these things as an audience, and Liz would too if she was thinking through the big picture at this point in time.
Max, on the other hand, doesn't know any of that. Here's what Max hears from Liz: he hears surprise. He hears Liz acknowledge that this is unexpected news. And right as he’s processing this unexpected reveal...Max sees Heath's Wild Pony t-shirt.
Weird coincidence #1 from Max's POV was Heath (the guy who is currently so pissed at Liz that he won't take her calls) supposedly rescuing Liz's science out of the good of his heart so that Genoryx doesn’t get their hands on it? This doesn't add up.
Weird coincidence #2 was Heath quitting Genoryx - a decision Heath made that Liz wasn't expecting.
The Wild Pony t-shirt is now the 3rd thing that doesn't add up. And if the t-shirt clue isn't adding up for you, see my post about it here:
The T-shirt is strike 3 for Max. He can't really pretend that he's not suspicious of Heath anymore. So he broaches the subject with her.
"How much do you know about this guy, Heath? How close were you?"
Max is feeling uncomfortable and looking for more information. He's trying to make the clue make sense. Why would Heath have the T-shirt? Does he have a connection to Roswell that Liz doesn't know about? And Liz doesn’t listen.
"This isn't the time to be jealous about a boy I met."
For all that Liz is clinical and on mission, she jumps very quickly to assuming that Max is NOT on mission. Yes, Max is inherently more emotional than she is. But throughout the episode he's been asking questions about Heath and NOT JUMPING TO CONCLUSIONS. That's one of the keys to me here. Max really is trying to give her the benefit of the doubt about him.
At Liz's house, he asked about "the boyfriend" but he wasn't doing it in a jealous or judgy way. If anything it could almost be interpreted as concern. He started with "were you happy" and only when Liz kind of metaphorically admitted that any happiness was a façade...that's when he brought Heath into it. And yeah, Liz says that he impacted her life and helped her grow, but she didn't exactly express romantic feelings that would make Max jealous. So when she basically jumped straight to the jealousy assumption instead of actually discussing this with him, he starts getting worked up. Because she is not hearing him. She is not acknowledging that the facts they have found during this investigation are not adding up. So he is honest and blunt about what he's thinking.
"I'm just saying it's possible that he took your one-of-a-kind alien spores and quit, so that, just like you, he could use the research himself, free of Genoryx."
Max is the one who brings the science into this conversation. Not Liz. And he's not criticizing or questioning HER application of the science. He's questioning the trustworthiness of Heath. Because the lies are starting to jump out at him like a friggin’ neon light.
BUT — now that he's specifically brought up the science, he has her attention. Because Max questioning her science is HER sore spot. So what does she say back to him? Something kinda judgy.
"That grand trust speech certainly had a short shelf life."
Side note: I really don't think there actually was a "grand trust speech" in this episode. I can think of a few scenes where there might have been an opportunity for one. In particular during the milkshake scene when he admits to saving her tapes. But they actually don't talk about trust in that scene. They talk about having hard conversations. They talk about moving forward instead of looking backwards. But they don't talk about trust. My guess is that there might have been content cut for time at some point in this episode, that may have included some grand declaration from Max, but that's really just speculation on my part.
Regardless…Liz's response to Max bringing up the science is to basically accuse him of not trusting her. Which is not what he was saying. He was not questioning her use of the science. He was questioning her trust in Heath through the context of her science. So he elaborates on what he IS saying, and as he does, he's getting more and more worked up...because this does relate directly to his personal fears, and, frankly, his buried trauma that he's never properly addressed.
"I trust you. Okay? But I don't trust some guy I have barely met with a secret that could endanger me, could endanger my family and break the frickin' Internet if it came out."
Max doesn't know Heath, and he doesn't trust Heath with a secret that could endanger Michael and Isobel. His emotions are escalating, because now he's thinking about the science that scares him in the hands of a guy that all signs points to being potentially untrustworthy, and he's triggered.
BUT he doesn't back up his argument. He doesn't point out the very specific evidence he's identified that Heath is probably lying to Liz.
And Liz is inherently reactive and sometimes overly defensive (see 1x09 list of Liz's flaws). So even though he's focused on Heath, she immediately reacts defensively and takes it as a criticism of HER.
"You think I would let myself be conned?"
"No, I think you came out here looking for a partner, and it could blind you."
*deep breath* and this is where it starts to get personal. And rough. Max isn't entirely wrong here. But he also kind of is. Liz didn't choose Genoryx for partnership. She was looking for resources, freedom to do the science she wanted to do, and to save her father from deportation.
But partnership? Yeah, Liz wanted that. But she wanted that from MAX. She was looking for partnership in life, not in science.
And now that Max has thrown that direct criticism out there, Liz is going to throw a bomb right back at him.
"Just because you sabotaged me when I thought you were mine does not mean that Heath would take the same path."
Ouch. This is the hardest line in this whole scene for me to work with. Because it is combative. And purposefully hurtful.
BUT…she is NOT TALKING ABOUT HER SCIENCE. She has not said a single word about her science in this argument. She moved past that. She had the epiphany that she was wrong and she apologized (3x03). That is in the past for her.
This argument, for Liz, is about betrayal. This is about her believing that they were going to be partners and move their lives forward together (2x12), and right when she believed in that future, Max made another massive decision that directly impacted her life (just like he did in 1x13) instead of working with her to make big decisions together.
"And just because you changed the wallpaper doesn't mean you've mended your blind spots."
I really hate this "change the wallpaper" line. It feels like they're mixing metaphors. Liz called her life a commercial. Max is saying that she's changed her decor. Like...pick one and stick with it.
That aside… I think this barb is about her arrogance. Earlier in the scene, she seemed baffled at the idea that Max believes she could have been conned by Heath, because Liz is used to always being the smartest person in the room. She thought she was smarter than Diego and he figured her out. She believed her lab was secure, but Diego (possibly) got in. Sometimes, like most scientists, Liz is so bogged down in the complicated, brilliant details she’s thinking through, that she misses simple things that contribute to the big picture. And I think that's what Max is getting at here. In her arrogance, she believes that she can control the Heath situation. But she's not acknowledging the human factor here - that Heath is a person who may have his own unspoken ulterior motives driving him. Just like Diego did. She's just not seeing what Max is seeing.
BUT - again I'll say. Max is also not communicating the scope of the evidence he is collecting. They're both wrong here.
"I have learned my lessons, but you... oh, my God, you sound an awful lot like the guy who blew up my lab. So forgive me, but you're making it perfectly clear why I felt like I had to go and change the wallpaper."
This is the only line where Liz even comes close to talking about her science, but again, she's talking about his betrayal. She's talking about him undermining their partnership. She's talking about her need for a change of scenery from HIM.
And that’s when Max blows out the safe and they put the fight on hold to finish their investigation.
But, to sum it up…the fight was all about trust and betrayal. It was necessary for them to work through it, though frankly? I wish they could have finished the discussion. Because instead of them coming to some sort of peace with their trust in each other, the truth came out about Heath, Liz realized that she was wrong, she apologized, and they moved forward together, on mission.
I can’t help pointing out though…after the fight and Liz's epiphany about Heath, Max and Liz spent at least 15 hours in a car together. And I'm sorry, I refuse to believe that they didn't talk about anything important for 15 hours. Fic writers assemble? 😆
Many thanks to @ober-affen-geil for doing a quick review and checking me on opinions vs facts. Very important.
And for my next trick… road trips, life choices, and Robert Frost! Coming soon to a Tumblr near you…

we’re not engaged T.H.
wc: 1.5k
ariana grande!reader tells the world tom and her aren’t engaged
(fluff)
She couldn't have been happier. She was practically glowing, only she wasn't pregnant. Just married.
Y/N and Tom had dated for two and a half years before Tom proposed. Announcing it on their social medias months later had erupted in millions of 'congrats!' and 'very happy for you two!"'s. The couple had announced their big step a few months after Tom popped the question, so the wedding was well on its way already.
It wasn't a stereotypical wedding. On the contrary, it was quite small; only their closest friends & family members attended the private wedding venue. Paparazzi hadn't suspected a thing, and neither had the fans.
It had been three months since the wedding, and Y/N was attending her first interview since before it. She was releasing an album in about a month, so there was much to catch up on.
Tom and her agreed that if they were asked about marriage, then they would be honest, but they hoped to not go purposefully raise attention.
"Y/N, welcome back! It's been what- a year?" Zach, the host, said.
There was a group of fans sitting on the floor in bean bags and big cushions, right in front of the couch that Y/N and Zach were seated on, microphones propped up in front of them.
"Uh-" she laughed. "Yeah, yeah I think so." She was sitting cross-legged, her hands in her lap and underneath the blanket that was covering her. She wasn't really hiding the ring sitting on her left hand, but she wore an over-sized hoodie (which was really just Tom's) so she would have sweater-paws in case.
Y/N went on to answer each question, her answers three times as long as what was asked. The fans had respectable comments and questions as well -- joining in only when it was appropriate.
"What was the hardest song to write?"
"I think.." Y/N's right pointer finger was pointed out as she leaned on her hand in thought. "I think "ghostin.'"
"Why's that?" Zach asked.
Instead of answering, Y/N used both her hands to gesture a pushing motion, her palms facing towards the audience as she made a soft facial expression. Zach laughed slightly in understanding, changing the topic to something a little less sensitive.
"Did Tom help you write any of it?" he asked.
Y/N smiled at the mention of Tom, her heart rate increasing. She knew Tom was watching (and listening), live with the rest of the world, so she tried not to give him anything to tease her about.
"For sure," she laughed.
"What's so funny?" Zach asked, laughing along.
"Nothing-!" Y/N blushed. "If I tell you the song, listening to it will- oh god," she put her face in her hands in pure embarrassment.
"What's the song about?" Zach laughed.
"We're.. open to interpretation?" Y/N stated, though it came out as more of a question.
"What's the song?" Someone from the audience asked.
"Track.. seven," Y/N laughed. "Track titles out in a week," she grinned slyly. Everyone grunted playfully in result, knowing they'd have to wait to find out.
"So he helped you write it?' Zach continued. "Or did he like-"
"Well he was the inspiration," she answered, "and when I started writing it he came in and helped me write it like- halfway through, maybe three-fourths of the way through."
a / n : the song is called 'make up' and its about really filthy make up sex, so there's that
"So," Zach smiled and eyed her knowingly. "You and Tom. You're still engaged?"
At this, everyone's ears perked up, their mouths shutting as they waited for her response. Y/N's mouth was open and about to say something, but nothing came out for the first few seconds.
"Uhm," she glanced around the room, eyes moving but face stilled in it's position. "No- no we're not engaged anymore."
At this, she heard quiet gasps and small murmurs erupt throughout the room, and the phone that had questions from fans who were live-tweeting started blowing up.
Tom, who was actually watching from the studio building, was also wide eyed, mouth open slightly. Harrison punched his arm lightly, removing Tom from his trance as both of them continued watching Y/N.
"What-" Zach followed-up immediately. "What happened? Did you call it off or di-"
"Well," Y/N was trying to suppress a smile. "When people get engaged, they have to get married at some point," she said, showing off her ring.
Zach had put a hand over his chest in relief, the audience breathing out sighs of relief as the room exploded with joy and congratulatory messages.
"The wedding," Zach started after things quieted down. "It never surfaced online from the paps or anything."
"Yeah," Y/N said. "Tom and I are so fucking thankful for that. It was a private venue -- only family and close friends attended."
"Where was the honeymoon?" Someone sitting in front of her asked.
"Uhm- Venice. Venice, Italy," Y/N blushed at the thought of it.
"Where's Tom now?" The fans went on. "Is he filming? Or taking a break for the beginning of the marriage? Or-"
Y/N's laugh interrupted him, her smile finally showing. "He's, uh- he's in the building," she admitted.
At this, noise grew wildly in excitement, multiple requests to get Tom in the interview being proposed. Y/N turned to Zach, silently asking him if he would allow it.
"As long as it's okay with the two of you," Zach smiled. "We have more than enough microphones."
Y/N laughed, pulling her phone out of her pocket and ringing up Tom.
"Hey, sweets," he said. The phone was on speaker, and the audience awed at the pet name.
"Hi," Y/N replied timidly. "I'm not sure if you saw, but the-"
"I'm on my way. Harrison's giving me directions, so he'll probably be coming too," Tom said into the phone.
Everyone was watching (listening to) the couple intently,  awing again at them.
"Okay," Y/N smiled. "I'll see you inna bit."
"Mhmm," Tom hummed, Harrison's voice lightly speaking in the background. "See you in five, angel. Love you."
"Love you too, Tommy," Y/N said, hanging up the phone and looking at it, a little lost in thought and forgetting about the current interview she was in.
"You two seem so happy," Zach interrupted her daydream.
"Oh, for sure," Y/N said. "It's like a never-ending honeymoon phase, yanno?" She smiled again. Zach nodded along, the rest of the audience doing the same, and then a producer from behind the camera informed them that both Tom and Harrison had arrived. Two microphones, both with wires coming out from the bottom of them, were placed on the open space on the couch, between the host and Y/N. And then, both boys were sitting down, smiles adorning their faces.
Tom had kissed her cheek, a simple gesture that had Y/N blushing wildly.
"Hello, boys," Zach greeted them.
Both replied with a simple 'hi,' and the interview went on, only this time, the questions were more open for each person to answer.
"What is it liked being in a relationship with someone who's schedule is all over the place?" Zach asked, glancing between Tom and Y/N. "Actors and artists have it pretty rough. I- I can imagine it being.. pretty difficult to fully commit to a relationship and not see each other for months at a time."
"Of course," Tom replied first, his accent thick as his chocolate curls fell on part of his face. "There's always rough patches, but for me, the peak of my career had really just, 'ended' you could say, and being with Y/N was like the first step to settling down. It was like I could fully support her from the front row, instead of on the sidelines like I always have." Tom blindly grabbed her hand and held it in his lap, linking their fingers together as he smiled softly. Both boys turned to her to see if she would respond.
"Uhm," she laughed quietly. "Not that his career his totally over, because his schedule gets more flexible the older he gets as an actor, but it's pretty much that. It's hard to support somebody else and do your job one hundred percent. When Tom was at his 'peak,' my music was kind of.. on hold for awhile," Y/N smiled. "It was a bit rough at times, but I think it's better to give your all to one thing, rather than trying to satisfy everybody at once. I was with Tom during filming, attending premieres and press tours too, and now I think the roles have just reversed."
"You guys really have your shit together," Zach commented. The couple laughed, looking at each other because they knew he was right. "Well, I hope you two are really happy together, and I wish you both long & wonderful lives."
"Oh, thank you Zach. God, don't make me cry," Y/N said, jokingly wiping her eyes with a smile on her face.
Tom laughed at her too before replying. "Really, though. Thank you, mate," Tom smiled.
"I think all the fans can agree that we need more [ your ship name ] content!" Zach exclaimed.
"We're playing 'Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts' on the Late Late Show tomorrow, so keep an eye out for that," Tom said nonchalantly.
"What?" Y/N said, bewildered. "I never signed up for that!" She laughed.
Tom smirked, "Surprise?"

Why Klaus IS Christmas Kino
Tumblr media
Klaus isn’t flawless, let’s get this out the way. My love for this film won’t deny that it bears a couple nits that can distract the experience. Jesper and Alva’s relationship felt like an eye-rolling inevitability, notable cliches here & there, a notable song felt both fitting and out of place, and while enjoyable, I’m not as big a fan of the climax as I thought. But in spite of it all, I love this film and it is one of the best modern animated Christmas films, period? Follow me here. I could go on about its wonderful animation cuz yeah, it’s unlike any other film. But a philosophy of mine is that the best animation enhances the writing and I can say Klaus is that surprisingly well written and has become an all time Christmas fave
Tumblr media
*deep breath in* So let’s do this...
I mention that Klaus has its cliches, but you gotta know that it’s smarter than expected. Believe me when I say if the writers didn’t care, this could’ve actually been so much worse. Jesper could’ve been more manipulative towards everyone for his goals, Klaus would’ve given up entirely after knowing the truth about Jesper, we could’ve had an argument between Jesper and his dad about upholding business, the townsfolk could’ve reverted back to their old ways, plenty writing moments where this could’ve been Emoji Movie levels of insulting to your intellect. BUT, they don’t. The film never really turns back on itself, it keeps moving where, as the notable quote goes, an act of good will sparks another as it starts with Jesper’s father.
Tumblr media
Even if nepotism was responsible for Jesper getting the job in the first place, he clearly sees his son be more spoiled than he’s worth so is like, “Ma boi, I will send you to the ends of the earth or leave you to the streets if you don’t do something with yourself.” He never cared about his son representing the postal company, or ruining his top class image, he was only tired of Jesper taking advantage of his fortune while not having any ambition of his own. Can’t help but say Jesper’s dad is a very respectable character because the sole reason the whole plot happened in the first place was because he just wanted his son to do better. It’s that act of genuine consideration that pushes Jesper to his wake up call as he reaches Smeerensburg.
Tumblr media
People have compared this movie to Emperor’s New Groove through Jesper’s character and I say yes, but this film takes that next step and put Jesper in the pit of pits way early. Reminds me more of Ratatouille’s beginning where Remy’s lowest point is around the same time as Jesper’s. The harsh atmosphere of the island is treated very blunt in how this is our mailman’s nightmare come true. With his situation, our guy is truly at his lowest. Gives up now, he’ll be cut off his inheritance and probably will have worse. Everyone hates him and each other, his post office itself is in shambles, symbolic of how communication is practically thin outside conflict, and the teacher turned fish seller Alva is that path Jesper could notably be if he didn’t try. Everything is literally grey for this guy, but like Ratatouille, when you’re at your lowest there’s no where else to go but up. That’s where Klaus comes in...
Tumblr media
This is genuinely the most clever interpretation of Santa I know, hands down. A well established woodsman, a crafter both of living, for him and the birds that reside in his woods, and recreation with the toys he made himself not just for kids, but specifically the kids he and his wife wanted but couldn’t have. Klaus feels like a real person, not just another take on the mythical man. You’re with him and Jesper as he, after familiar winds provide him a letter, a small spark to do something good, soon opens up and gets reminded of what’s kept him going all these years. It is no wonder he sees his wife in Jesper, it’s thanks to him that he could refurbish his dashed dream into a new one. He didn’t just want to do it for the children of the island, but for himself. That is another thing about this film: communication. I mention before how it’s practically thin at first due to a long going feud that isn’t even aware of why it’s still going. The joy in hate is only for hatred’s sake, and they make it very clear how miserable it all feels. That is where Jesper comes in. They don’t take shortcuts with how he gets the ball rolling, both accidentally and purposefully, he boots up to get things done, pushes himself to go to Klaus to make things happen. This is all in part by the youth, what really ties the plot together...
Tumblr media
As I mentioned before (again), life in Smeerensburg is noticeably miserable but thanks to Klaus, by extension Jesper, the kids are enticed to do what it takes to get some genuine joy in their lives through the toys they’re able to get. They’ll make them letters, and if they can’t write, they’ll go to Alva for teachings, and if they act naughty, they’ll try to do good which in turn pushes the adults to do good for the sake of their kids. It really would’ve been one thing to sure enough make the kids spoiled because of the toy giving, focusing more on the extrinsic value of Klaus’s kindness but no. The children are very grateful for these gifts enough to feel compelled to do good, and it makes them feel good as much as it soon makes the adults more convinced to stop fighting. It helps that this all takes place in older times cuz I believe this would’ve been far different, possibly worse, if this took place in modern times. That or just kinda rip off Arthur Christmas, it’s my guess. As such, it gradually becomes an amazing Christmas film because it isn’t just the presents, the Santa Claus myth, the festive style of it all that makes this holiday special to me. It’s the warmth... of togetherness.
Tumblr media
My favorite detail about Klaus is how it transitions from cold to warm with its atmosphere. We start out with the emptiest, harshest environment, enough fog to choke your eyes, and then we get to this moment with a brighter, clearer sight of the more united town as the Christmas spirit builds in the film, even when it isn’t even that day yet in-universe, so too does the warmhearted feeling that can come from celebrating it appear more and more. This film fleshes out more of what the Grinch taught me, what A Charlie Brown Christmas taught me, what I’ve come to appreciate about Christmas as I grew up in this materialistic world. I can say everyday can have the Holiday spirit, but Christmas is the time where I feel compelled to be grateful of what I’ve made and got and give back when honestly, I don’t care about getting the most expensive stuff anymore like I used to when I was way younger. This film is so sincere in what it wants to say, and you know this is indeed the same guy that made Minions. Yeah, not kidding and I’ll let you sit with that if you’re reading this as I continue because we have to talk about that moment...
Tumblr media
Yeah, I don’t like being the Nostalgia Critic, but I too don’t take kindly to the ‘liar reveal’ trope myself and this could’ve been a point where the film lost me a little. Though you know what? It still works. See, with that trope, what sucks is that it can tend to unravel the plot to where you know as soon as they break apart, they’ll get back together regardless of the deed done. This is why I don’t like A Bug’s Life, don’t @ me. But I’m not saying it can’t done right, like in Over the Hedge. The breakup between Jesper and the others is painful, but it is necessary to give us a couple great character moments. One is with Jesper and his dad, who came back personally to see that Jesper has indeed built something for himself. We get no dialogue between them but it’s clear that even when Jesper’s unintentionally successful thanks to Yzma and Bubba, he can tell his son wasn’t happy leaving everything behind, so he lets him stay since that was what he truly wanted this whole time. Again, give that man some credit for amazing dad. Another moment comes before the big reveal where not only do we see Jesper come to understand his own guilt surrounding his original intentions, but in the end they never hated him for coming back, especially due to him inadvertently stopping the enemy feud all together. Lastly, without that moment, we probably wouldn’t have got this smile. When Margu, purest character ever that I could make a whole segment about but I don’t wanna keep you too long, started to tear up after calling for Jesper thinking he left for good but she then sees our guy never really left and we get this teary smile:
Tumblr media
I felt that. Almost more than anything else in this film.
Cliched as it can appear, the execution excels in those more memorable emotions for this film. It’s been a year since I watched this again and I remember so much about these characters. And my god, I haven’t even gotten to the animation which... my god.
Tumblr media
Klaus is indeed the most beautiful upon beautiful films I’ve seen, and what makes it better is that it all enhances the story. I mention before of its transitional visual from cold to warm sights, but goddamn, the character designs, the environments, the expressiveness, the textures all amount to style perfect for this alone. I think it would’ve as well received if it had a more flat look, but they seriously went higher for a traditional appealing story that compliments the unique children’s storybook look of it all. This honestly is better than most of modern Disney films that I’ve seen, ironic since it feels like if you took Tangled the Series and made it 3D with more fluid character animation. And if I’m comparing something to the continuous mindblower that’s Tangled the Series, you’ve most certainly got on my best side.
Tumblr media
Sergio Pablos and his team really pulled no punches in making this a great movie. A great Christmas movie, one worth seeing if not at least once but every Holiday season for tradition’s sake. Klaus gave me a good time, made me cry, and above all showed me to never stop having a good heart because doing good can indeed go far, thankless as it can be. Heck, my heart felt more rejuvenated than before in making this critique, that’s a testament to how much good this film means to me personally. What else is there to say?

What I Thought About "Through The Looking Glass Ruins" from The Owl House
Salutations, random people on the internet who most certainly won’t read this! I am an Ordinary Schmuck! I write stories and reviews and draw comics and cartoons!
When Disney announced episode titles/synopsis for the new season (On a day that left my head SPINNING!), there was one episode that I knew deep down that would cause controversy and discourse amongst the fandom. And that episode was "Through the Looking Glass Ruins." Not because it would be bad, far from it. Instead, because the episode was a Gus episode with a Lumity subplot, that meant that discourse would start as fans decide which story they prefer more. A situation that, might I add, would result in no winners.
Do you prefer the Lumity plotline? Well, guess what! You're a racist who chose to talk about an overrated ship rather than a heavily underrated character who just so happens to be a person of color.
Do you prefer Gus' plotline? Well, guess what! You're a homophobe who decided to shine a light on a character who's underrated for a reason instead of praising a ship that just so happens to involve two girls.
Either side you pick is going to result in making people mad. The only way to avoid that is by explaining in heavy detail that you still enjoyed one side despite preferring the other. Even if you loved both, you'll most certainly have to explain to everyone that you mean it and that you're neither racist nor homophobic. And all I have to say is this: F that.
F that S in the A right now.
Because I, or anybody else for that matter, shouldn't have to explain myself when it comes to saying why I prefer one plot line or the other. I shouldn't have to prevent getting ripped apart by some bulls**t, black and white mentality of people who can't accept that others like a show for different reasons than they do.
You wanna know what I think about "Through the Looking Glass Ruins?" Well, continue reading to find out. You'll have to make your way through spoilers, but it's the only way for you to learn why I consider this episode not worth any discourse that I'm already certain is cropping up.
Now, let's review, shall we?
WHAT I LIKED
The Opening Scene: I'm kind of digging how snappy and to the point these opening scenes are getting. In the span of what has to be less than a minute, we're given all the information we need to know: Gus is insecure about his illusion magic because he accidentally got Willow injured. It's a great way of setting up why Gus wants to prove himself to the Glandus students and a great way of showing how much Willow's friendship means to him. Look at how he's reacting a few days after the incident. He's still mopey and guilty about it, and I feel bad for the little guy.
Gus in General: And while we're already talking about him, let's give this episode a round of applause for giving Gus the spotlight without having him screw over his friends...except for Willow.
"Through the Looking Glass Ruins" really fleshes Gus out much more so than past episodes. As I said, it plays heavily into his own insecurities while proving how he's capable as an illusionist. He's also the best possible outlet to explore more about what illusionist magic can really do. It can't hurt anybody or work well in a fight. Instead, its strengths lie in the act of convincingly tricking others into thinking that something that should be fake is actually real. And Gus got to prove he really is a super witch because of his illusions through a jaw-dropping scene that's as dark as it was enthralling. The fact that he did it all by himself, without the help of an illusion elder who was right there, is honestly even more impressive. A lot of people aren't that interested in Gus as a character, but I feel like, after this episode, he certainly won a few more fans over.
Willow Getting Injured and Missing the Episode: This is a smart move, in my opinion. Willow acts as the voice of reason in the friend group, so if she tagged along with Luz and Gus right away, she would have easily talked Gus out of joining the Glandus kids on a dangerous quest. I love Willow, she's a solid character, but writing her out is really the only way the plot could have progressed.
(I also love that she wasn't mad in the slightest over Gus getting her hurt. She has every right to be, but she also understands that it was an accident, and Gus wouldn't do anything to purposefully hurt her. And that's sweet!)
King’s Prerecorded Message for Gus: That's just adorable. We need more cute friendship moments between these two, DAMN IT!
Gus Being Sick of Luz’s S**t: Of all the characters I expected to get sick of the whole Lumity situation, Gus wasn't really one of them. I'd always thought it'd be Willow, primarily because the rest of the fandom latched onto that idea, but for Gus, I'd figured he'd be more supportive rather than annoyed. That being said, seeing him call Luz out for borrowing his library card to see Amity (Not ask her out. Just to see her) is not only a hilarious moment for Gus but also an adorable moment for Luz. It's something I would never have seen coming, but now that I have it, I want more. GIVE ME MORE!
(Sorry if I'm being a little intense)
Luz Trying to Cheer Up Gus: It's moments like this that prove why Luz is my favorite character.
Willow might have the most common sense out of the group, but it's Luz who still has the biggest heart. She knows her friend is down in the dumps, so Luz pulls out all the stops in cheering him up. Whether it's researching the first-ever human (really surprised he wasn't the tiniest bit excited about that, by the way) and lending him glyphs for his mission to help show up Mattholomule. She may be slow in the romantic relationship department, but episodes like this prove that she excels with a platonic friendship.
Bria: I consider Amar adorably optimistic, and I have no strong feelings for Gavin, one or the other. But with Bria? Holy hell, did the writers do everything they should with her!
At first, it seems like she'll be a generic nice girl for Gus to have a crush on. Only for that writing to be a perfect twist into how she's kind of the worst. You see hints of her true personality in the overly sweet way she threatens to force Amar to eat a bug he gets distracted by. A viewer's initial reaction to that would be to think that while she's sweet, she still means business. But no, it's actually a perfect way to reveal her true intentions while hiding them at the same time. Bria may be rotten to the core, but with how perfectly executed this twist was, I can't help but adore her contribution.
Mattholomule: ...I would sooner expect to have gone insane before believing that this little s**t weasel would make his way onto my good side. Despite that, here we are in episode five of the new season, and I like Mattholomule now.
The reveal that Glandus High forces students to believe that the strong survive and the weak are inferior explains so much for Mattholomule's thirst for power in "Something Ventured, Someone Framed." It doesn't excuse his actions, not by a long shot, but it definitely paints a clearer picture. It also explains his treatment of Gus, as well as Mattholomule's reasoning to help him. Because of Glandus High inserting a "the strong survive" mentality into Mattholomule, he belittles Gus due to thinking that illusion magic makes Gus weak. But after seeing how they're both stooges to Bria's mistreatment, he's quick to apologize and willingly helps Gus out. In the process, the two of them create a believable and cute friendship...a friendship that is absolutely going to be interpreted as something else by the fandom...which is something that I'm more than supportive of--HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?! I WENT FROM ONE OF THE BIGGEST GUSTOLOMULE DENIERS TO ONE OF ITS SUPPORTERS IN LESS THAN A DAY! HOW DO THESE WRITERS MANAGE TO TAKE ELEMENTS THAT WERE ONCE ON MY S**T LIST TO THEN MAKING ME MORE THAN OK WITH THEM!
IT'S INSANE!
Mostly impressive.
BUT ALSO INSANE!
Edric and Emira: More so than ever, I am so happy that the writers took their course correction with Edric and Emira. These two work so much better as supporting characters rather than minor antagonists like several fans thought they would be after their treatment of Amity in "Lost in Language." They're quick to pick up on Luz and Amity's mutual affections for one another and do their part to help their friend and baby sister out. It's wholesome to watch, and, you know what, I'm gonna go ahead and say it: Edric and Emira Blight are much better mischievous twin characters than Fred and George Weasley. As much as I adore Fred and George, there is an issue how they're always referred to as Fred and George, not Fred or George. It's because their personalities are as identical as they are, so separating them is pointless. With Edric and Emira, they have enough individuality that you could enjoy them separately as much as you could seeing them together. Emira is more emotionally supportive in how she listens to Amity vent her frustrations about her feelings, while Edric is more of a doofus who can't take a hint to save his life. It creates a great set of characters who can potentially work well on their own. I hope they get explored more at some point, but for now, I'm happy with the cute moments these two offered already.
Lumity Moments: BUUUUUUUUUUUUT, nothing compares to the cuteness of these two.
I don't care if I'll be called a racist for it because these! Moments! These moments are the highlights of "Through the Looking Glass Ruins" for me! Seeing these two interact in this episode, now that the pining is mutual, was everything I could have ever hoped for, and so much more. Seriously, how can you complain about anything about all of this when you get cute bits like:
Luz getting flustered of seeing Amity with her hair down
Amity risking her job to help Luz
Amity being motivated to find the diary due to the possibility of a date with Luz in the human realm
Luz going through hell and back to get Amity her job back
All of the blushing
And that F**KING KISS AT THE END HOLY SH--Don't you dare think I'm not going to further discuss that. DON'T YOU DARE!
Gus' story was entertaining with how it surprised me in all the right ways, don't get me wrong. But seeing Luz and Amity's relationship develop more and more always fills my heart with glee that, believe it or not, I'm always going to remember it more. I love you, Gus, but I love Lumity more.
Philip Whittabeen: So we finally have a name to the alleged human who was here years ago, and we get properly introduced to him through a really visually appealing animation change. I'm personally curious to see where the writers go with him, but it's too early to say if his inclusion will be worth something. But I will say one thing, though. One thing, and then I'm going to move on.
Here it is:
Philip sounds eerily similar to Emperor Belos to me.
That is all I'm going to say about that.
Luz’s Sentences in Spanish: I want to give a personal shout-out to mi buen amigo @l-egionaire for pointing this out because there are some things to analyze in what Luz says in Spanish in this episode. Knowing what she means, it's clear that they are ideals that Camila instilled into Luz. Ideals that possibly show a lot about Camila's personality on top of revealing where Luz got her hopeful optimism and sense of determination. It's the second sentence that Luz says later on that I really want to delve deep into:
"Nada funcionará a menos que lo haga funcionar."
Translated, that means "Nothing will work unless you make it work." Again, this proves the dedication that Luz has filled into her soul, but to me, it says a lot about Luz's dedication to Amity. She wants to make this relationship work but fully understands that it won't unless she puts in the effort. It's a sweet sentiment that says so much about how Luz feels about Amity that some fans might not be able to pick up on if they don't speak Spanish. Or, in my case, have a good friend who finds the translation for you (thanks again @l-egionaire).
The Galderstones: Pretty interesting concept, I'm not going to lie. It's also interesting that of all the types of witches in the Boiling Isles, it was illusionists who were the ones that guard over the Galderstones. Because illusion magic can't really harm anyone, it makes a weird type of sense that they would be the ones to keep the Galderstones out of the wrong hands. And, even better, it showcases Gus' strength as an illusionist when he was able to take down Bria, who was hopped up on Galderstone power, through that same "harmless" magic. It just goes to show that if you have a big enough brain, you don't need to overpower somebody. You need to outthink them.
Malphus Being a Surprisingly Cool Dude: What can I say? I'm a sucker for expectation subversion.
Luz and Amity Crying: First of all, a HUGE round of applause to VAs Sarah-Nicole Robles and Mae Whitman through their vocal performances in this scene! They really sold how upset and broken apart Luz and Amity were due to their feelings for each other messing things up. More so with Sarah-Nicole.
Second, this might be the closest these two have gotten to a confession so far ("so far" being the keyword). I specifically latch onto Amity's expression after hearing Luz agree that she's always weird around Amity. In one way, it looks like Amity is surprised to see she made Luz cry, but in another, it could be that she realizes that perhaps that Luz has feelings for her as well. Or, at least, that's how I interpreted things. The thing about art is that there's no one interpretation to agree on. And that's what this scene is: Art. It's performed, written, and animated well, that no matter how you look at it, it's a masterpiece.
“I’ll call the hounds”: One line. One line was all it took for me to love the Keeper of the Looking Glass Graveyard.
Amity Dyes her Hair: I always assumed that Amity would let her original hair color grow out as defiance to Odalia. But dying it lavender? Thus crafting her own identity without having her be compared to either Odalia or Alador?
...yeah, that's brilliant. Whoever thought of that, you are a genius and deserve all of the credit that comes from it.
ALL of the credit.
Amity Kisses Luz on the Cheek!: I'll save my "Wha-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo" for an actual kiss, but for now, THIS IS AWESOME!
This moment, much like other Lumity moments, was everything I could have ever expected and so much more:
Amity's instant panic after realizing she seriously just did that
Ed and Em looking fondly at their sister taking such a big step
The look on Luz's face, which may or may not hint that she realizes that the feelings are more than mutual
And the fact that Luz's legs give out soon after Amity leaves
It was adorable as all forms of hell, and it was a perfect way to end such a perfect episode...or, at least, an almost perfect episode. I do have some issues.
WHAT I DISLIKED
Mattholomule Helping Gus too Easily: The Glandus kids were right there, in-ear and eye-shot, yet did nothing as Mattholomule effortlessly helped Gus and the Keeper escape...how?
Gavin falling for Gus’ Illusion: I want to laugh at how stupidly easy that was...but it's too stupidly easy for me to forgive.
And that’s about it. Just two nitpicks that don’t really take away that much enjoyment from the episode
IN CONCLUSION
"Through the Looking Glass Ruins" keeps Season Two's winning streak going by being another solid A. It fleshes out characters, develops cute relationships, and keeps the story going despite being so character-driven. It's easily more than worth the time...but it's not worth any discourse that comes from some fans preferring one plot over the other.
I highly doubt that some people are racist for loving the Lumity plotline or homophobic for loving Gus'. Maybe some people are, but also consider that maybe, just maybe, a person loves a ship because it's their favorite, or a person likes a character cause he's their favorite.
Which.
Is.
Fine.
There's no definitive way to like a series, and demanding that people like it for the same reasons you do is not worth anything. Because, believe it or not, even Dana Terrace doesn't care how people love her show. In the AMA she did, when a fan asked if she's upset about fans obsessing over Amity's crush on Luz, this is her word for word reaction:
"Not at all! No, the main focus of the series will never be on any romantic thread but that doesn't mean those threads aren't important. And I'm thrilled that people connect to our characters!"
THERE YOU HAVE IT! The creator herself fully admits that she doesn't care what fans latch onto. She's just glad to have people who like the show in the first place! So don't create discourse just because some people enjoy a part of an episode more than others. The second you get that through your heads, the sooner we can all move on with our lives.
(Also, that's five episodes in a row that are hits. And, man, is that stinker going to hit harder because of it.)

Thank you for the great request @the-desert-shewolf i hope this is what you were looking for.
Tumblr media
“Zuzu, you don’t look so good!”
The last Agni Kai. It was a day that was forever branded into your mind. You could still remember the heat of her flames. How her patient, strategic mind slipped into a rash and impulsive demeanor. She’d fataly wounded her own brother. Ready to do the same to Katara, if she hadn’t stopped her. And that was when you’d found her. Chained to a grid on the floor like an animal, crying in despair and spitting fire like a dragon. Nobody dared to go near her for hours. Nobody but you. “You need to stop, Azula,” You’d cried tears of your own as you forcefully hugged her, body winding against yours. Still trying to free herself. Still trying to fight. Still trying to win. “Please... I’m begging you...” Her whimper broke your heart. You were all that she had left.
There were times when not even a heartfelt “I love you,” could save her. Instead it was interpreted as a further manipulation through her mother. The so called ‘Puppetmaster’. She felt so far out of reach.
But not all days were bad. Sometimes Azula remembered. In the bright hours she recalled your supportive actions and words. You always hoped they would give her some kind of strength. And it wasn’t any easier to face those hardships yourself. To love someone who was hurt so very deeply.
“Being damaged doesn’t give you the right to abuse others,”
A lot of people called her crazy. Called you crazy for feeling affection towards the princess. But what were you supposed to do? You couldn’t just ignore them. Or turn them off. It wasn’t possible. It wasn’t what you wanted. All you were trying to do was to care for a person you’d known since you were a kid. A childhood friend, teenage crush and an adult lover. Where Zuko had been saved by Iroh, Azula had been saved by you. But it wasn’t quite the same. You'd just been a little kid yourself at the time.
“Are you going to see Azula?” You nodded, smiling at Zuko over your shoulder. The robes of the Fire Lord really suited him. “I am. I want to surprise her with a picnic,” He raised a brow, curiously leaning over the little basket on the table before you. You’d spent hours picking out different kinds of tarts and snacks, trying not to get in the way of the cooks.
It was a perfect summer day. The climate was warm and mild. Your timing couldn’t have been better.
Years had passed since Sozin’s Comet occured. Years full of anxiety and anger. But finally you’d arrived in a part of your life, where things were looking up again. The time spend supporting Zuko as the Fire Lord hadn’t been wasted. Both of you worked together on a daily basis. Especially when it came to his sister. Despite everything she had done, he couldn’t deny that he held a soft spot for her. So it was no wonder that she resided in one of the finest suites of the palace. After being monitored and treated for ages, her mental heatlh finally regained stability.
“She’s lucky to have you, (Y/N),” He said, attempting to steal one of the tarts only to earn a slap on the hand. Grumbling he retreated, watching as you checked the contents again, before closing the lid. “Maybe,” You turned around to face your friend. “But i’d like to think we’re equally lucky,”
Your picnic was set up in the gardens, by the fountain, under the old apple tree.
Her whole life Azula only gained approval from two people. Her father and you. The few moments of empathy she experienced were supported by you. If she had a nightmare late at night, you’d crawl into bed with her. When you reduced the choice between you two to physical affection, Ozai couldn’t keep up with you. The mixed messages her parents gave her as a child were what lead her into misery. But her best friend, someone of the same age, stuck by her.
Eventually you’d won her over. Relationships were rekindled. Needs were met.
And right this moment, you were beyond glad that you had. “There you are, sugarplum,” An involuntary grin spread on your face. You’d been so busy with displaying everything perfectly that you hadn’t heard her come up behind you. “I see you haven’t grown tired of the petnames,” That nickname would truly stick with you for life. She’d once used it mockingly, back when you visited Ember Island. And she did ever since. It was always used with an edge of sarcasm, but never empty of love.
“You wouldn’t have it any other way, would you (Y/N)?” You turned around to her, reaching for one of her hands. Her fingers intwined themselves with yours. “Of course not, Azula,” Pulling her towards your little arrangement, you sat down on the blanket, leaning against the strong stem of the tree and patting the spot beside you.
Since her recovery she’d formed a habit of over-sharing her feelings and often apologizing more than nessecary. Those were new sides that you had to grow accustomed to, but that weren’t unwelcome. Nevertheless you were relieved that she also kept some of her wit. She knew she could be free with you. Didn’t need to fear any jugdement. Some days were harder than others. On those Azula would cry a lot. And so would you. You couldn’t stand seeing her so broken.
“Keep it together, (Y/N),” She would say at first, making you laugh through your tears. “It’s okay,” You’d reassure her time and time again. “Healing takes time,”
It was hard to face all those bottled up emotions after such an amout of time. It wasn’t her favorite way to deal with things at first, but she quickly found it helped. And it didn’t take long for her to tell you.
“Sharing your tears doesn’t make you weak,” She’d repeat your words in her darkest times. It brought her comfort. Kept her from going back to her old ways.
The princess moved to sit in the spot next to you, but she never made it that far. Small feet rushed through the grass, running straight into her legs. A tiny, little person curled around them, hugging her as far as she could reach. “Zula!” They squeaked.
The so-called ‘Zula’ raised a brow and crossed her arms, looking down at the little troublemaker. “What do you think you’re doing here?” The girl only lifted her hands in response. You stiffled a smile as Azula picked her up. “Where is your father? Didn’t he want to spend time with you?” Yes he did. And he arrived right on time. “Izumi?” Zuko looked around, searching for her, until he spotted you. The princess was snuggling into her aunt’s chest, a place that always felt warm. You knew it best. “There you are!” His sister raised a brow, tapping her foot on the ground, when he walked up to the three of you. When they stood next to each other, the family-resemblance was undeniable. They shared the same shade of amber eyes, the soft umber strands, and the fair, spotless skin.
It was another person that had helped Azula on her journey. Izumi.
The girl got to experience the childhood the siblings never had. She was proof that princesses didn’t have to be perfect all the time. Nobody did. And she loved her aunt without any doubt or fear.
“You really need to keep better watch on her, Zuzu. This is already the fifth time this has happened,” The Fire Lord nodded, holding his hands out. “Of course. It won’t happen again, i promise,” Azula tried handing her niece over, who whined, clinging to her neck. “But i mean, now that we’re already here, we could also just join you on your picnic,” He argued, pointing to his daughter who held onto Azula’s clothes with all her might. “Izumi seems to like the idea,” You squinted your eyes at him. This was definetely not a coincedence. Accidents don’t repeat themselves that often. “Admit it, Zuko. You’ve purposefully told Izumi that her aunt is here, only so you could get your clutches on our food again!” You’d connected the dots and read the situation. He’d taken a glimpse into your basket every time before you went out the past times. Particular interest always occured when it contained those delicous fruit tarts. With rose pedals on top. He gasped. “No, i didn’t!”
“He’s lying,” Azula said, rolling her eyes. Izumi proceeded to tell her father that “Lying is bad!” which earned her a gentle pat on the head from her aunt.
Nevertheless they swayed you to share some of the ‘goodies’ as Izumi liked to call them. Finally you had Azula were she belonged. Next to you. Her niece sat in her lap, munching happily as your lover ran her hand through her hair. It had taken some time until she’d been allowed to see Izumi at first. Zuko and her mother hadn’t let them meet each other until his sister was completely stabile. Additionally he didn’t want to put Azula through something she couldn’t handle at the time. Their first meeting had been nervewracking for everyone who watched, but an eye-opening event for the two princesses. They seemed comfortable. Content with each other. Sometimes Azula would act as if Izumi bothered her. But she couldn’t deny that she was fond of the girl.
It was also no secret that Azula was clearly the ‘coolest aunt’. At least from Izumi’s perspective. She looked up to her as the strongest female firebender, to be known. Of course she was still too young to fight. But that didn’t stop her from constantly begging the siblings for stories. “Can you tell me a story?” She’d ask, making a pout. “I’ve told you stories countless times,” Her aunt replied, booping her upturned nose. “Another one, pleeease?” Azula sighed. Zuko chimed in, coming to her aid. He started telling the tale of the ‘Dance of Dragons’ in great detail, paying no mind to his sisters sarcastic comments interrupting the tale. Izumi was exstatic about both of them engaging in the narrative. When the story was completed, he beamed at Azula. “Remember when mother used to take us to watch the Ember Island Players perform this play? Afterwards you and i would reenact every scene. I don’t get why i always had to be the dark water spirit, tough,” His sister scoffed, not hiding her gleefull smirk. “Clearly, i made a better dragon emperor,” Her niece laughed at their antics, clapping her little hands. You could comprehend her joy. It was hilarious to have them both participate.
Unfortunatly, Izumi couldn’t escape her duties forever. “Bye, auntie Zula! Bye auntie (Y/N)!” She waved when Zuko carried her back inside. Upon her loopsided smile, Azula couldn’t help but grin, waving back. It wasn’t a sneer or a grimace. It was a genuine expression of so much beauty, that it took your breath away. When she turned back to face you, she furrowed her brows. “Why are you looking at me like that?” There were a ton of reasons. You didn’t even know were to start. So your delight had to be expressed differently. Her lips weren’t far from yours. It took a mere second to connect them. They were soft, as always. She tasted sweet, like the pastries she’d eaten before. “You’re my everything,” you mumbled, her lips still brushing yours. You see her eyes watering as she struggled to speak her next words. They reminded her of all that she’d endured. And yet you’re important enough for her to pull through. “I love you, (Y/N),”
A moment later the tears were replaced by a smile. Her hands came to rest on your cheeks, one of her thumbs running over your bottom lip, removing the lipstick hers had left. You yelped as she abruptly grabbed your shoulders, pulling you to rest your head in her lap.
She worked to untangle your locks, massaging your scalp in the process. Her nails lightly scraped your skin every so often. It felt relaxing. Heavenly. The smell of smoke and leather teased your senses. Something so familiar that it was like home. You allowed yourself to close your eyes for a moment, being at peace with just... feeling her. Being in her presence.
“Agni, you look just as self satisfied as my niece,” She playfully remarked.
The slight breeze made the leaves rustle softly. “Why wouldn’t i?” You chuckled, slowly opening your eyes to look up at her. Her slim fingers hadn’t stopped spoiling you. She looked stunning in the midday sun. Her eyes glowed like molten gold, framed by long, dark lashes, casting shadows on her cheeks. “I’m being pampered by the princess herself. I consider myself to be very lucky,” Her lips pulled into a smile as she caught your gaze.
“You’re right, (Y/N). We are lucky,”
Because everything you did for her, she would return tenfold.
Despite all the hardships, neglect and abuse she’d suffered, Azula had managed to get out on the other side.
Stronger, and better than ever.
Reconnected to the world around her, she remained one of the most powerful fire benders. Her blue flames offering protection wherever you’d go.
When she’d first felt affection towards you, she thought you were her weakness.
Now she knew you were her strength.

Three’s a Crowded Couch - Oikawa & Kageyama

“Come on. You can’t leave on your own. He’s not even here yet.” Huffing, you grabbed the back of the volleyball player’s collar, tugging him back to your side as he tried to walk away.
He choked, “I don’t want to wait for that selfish bastard!”
“What are you gonna do? Run home? No way. Now, just wait a bit longer. He’ll be here any minute.”
The black-haired man slumped next to you, bottom lip jutting out as he kicked the smooth floor with the toe of his shoe.
People began pouring through the glass doors, luggage following them. A few fell into the arms of friends and family that waited while others walked by, covering their mouths as they yawned.
Kageyama pulled your sleeve and dragged you to stand in front of him as the crowd became a bit larger. His arms came to fall over your shoulders, tucking you comfortably into a backwards hug.
He yawned.
"Was practice hard today?"
His thumbs brushed your shoulder. "As hard as it normally is," he said softly.
"Hmm, maybe it's just the nerves. Are you excited to see him again?"
“No way!” Strangers turned their heads at his outburst, chuckling at his scrunched nose and downturned lips.
Lifting your hand, you pinched the bridge of his nose, getting the muscles to relax beneath your fingertips. You snorted, “Liar.”
Just as you spun your head to look forward and lowered your hands with a brush against Kageyama’s shoulder, a loud and proud voice called over the busy chatter of the airport from the glass door exits. “Yahoo! My crowning jewels, royals upon the thrones.” Brown hair bouncing happily, the man jogged over. Behind him were two suitcases, behind him until he threw them forward, letting them roll to a stop on either side of you and Kageyama.
“Tooru!”
“Tobio! (Y/N)!” The man cheered, wrapping his arms around both of your forms and tightening his grip as much as possible. Which effectively squeezed out all the air in your lungs as you were sandwiched between two of some of the broadest chests in volleyball.
Hearing your broken wheezes, both men let their arms fall, yawning at the same time in the process. Watching Kageyama bicker with the older man about mimicking him —which only made Oikawa do it purposefully— you smiled and grabbed the pale blue suitcases, letting the two continue to argue playfully as you led them to your car.
“Hey! You don’t have to carry those, we can handle it.” Oikawa got away from the childish banter, jogging up to your left and taking the suitcase from your hand.
“Give me the other one.” Kageyama didn’t offer to help, instead, taking hold of your wrist and sliding the plastic handle of the other suitcase out of your grip.
You stomped the tiled floor, watching the two continue to walk ahead of you before running to catch up. “You both are very tired, let me do this.”
They both responded negatively, only leaving you to carry Oikawa’s carry-on backpack. You wanted to take at least the literal weight off of Oikawa’s shoulders if you couldn’t drag the rolling ones.
Once at your car, the two placed the suitcases on the back of the trunk. Oikawa paused though, staring at the vehicle before opening the side door. “New car?”  Oikawa took the passenger seat, leaving a Kageyama grumpy, mad over behind dethroned from his usual spot.
Kageyama answered as he and you slid into your seats. “Ya, the last one finally broke down last week. But that’s a perk of company cars.”
While both Kageyama and Oikawa were slotted for the Japan and Argentina national teams, respectively, for the Olympics (only needing to join their teammates every 4 years or so), they usually were with their league teams. Similarly, you worked with the Olympic team during the on-season, but fully —to both Kageyama’s and Oikawa’s distaste (mostly Tobio’s)— spent your time working as, the one and only, Hinata Shoyo’s personal trainer in the V League and Olympic setting.
“I got to carry a lot of equipment for Shoyo alone, added to the fact that Tobio can’t drive.”
Oikawa laughed reaching backwards to ruffle the younger man’s straight hair like he was a child. Kageyama nearly bit his hand off, only making the brunette laugh harder.
Oikawa pointed out new buildings and shops as you drove through the city. You smiled at the almost childlike wonder for seeing a city he hasn’t set foot in for a couple of months. In the rearview mirror, you could see the small ghost of a smile on Kageyama’s lips as he listened and watched Oikawa chatter on.
Once home, Kageyama carried the suitcases away from the main hall. You took the opportunity to turn on the tv as Oikawa fell lax into your lap on the couch, head resting on top of your stomach and hand gently against the fabric over your thigh. He twisted around as Kageyma returned, facing the tv and shifted back on the couch to make room for you to move towards the centre and for Kageyama to sit behind you.
With Kageyama at your back, legs spread out on either side of you, and Oikawa back between your knees, head on your stomach, you switched to the bookmarked channel that played sci-fi, courtesy of Oikawa return home from Argentina (where he would soon return, not that it mattered with the number of trips the three of you managed to plan around busy schedules). Said brunette hummed, nuzzling into your stomach as the opening theme played.
You leaned back against Kageyama, head against his shoulder. His eyes shut as he yawned again, audibly, which made Oikawa follow soon after. You chuckled, nudging your head against the younger man’s chin which he responded to by fully resting his cheek on your hairline. Your fingers tangled with Oikawa’s hair brushing and knotting the strands all at once.
It didn’t take long for you to notice the slow breathing of the two. It was only late evening, but jetlag and exercise can wear people out, even the greatest of athletes. A gentle chuckle escaped you as you departed between carrying, maybe more so dragging, the dead weight of the two to bed, or just enjoying the warmth you had now and falling asleep with them along the length of the couch.
The decision was made for you though, for as you tried to stand, both pairs of hands tightened their holds, followed by a set of gentle rumbling hums as you settled back into place.
“Damn you two,” you whispered, unable to stop the grin and warmth that built in your chest. With no complaints, you got comfortable in their holds and dozed off with the whirring sound of spaceships in the background.

Underwater (Peter Parker x Reader)
T/w: Suicidal thoughts, trauma
Read at your own discretion.
This is my first time and I am still developing my fanfic style...so please do forgive any stupid errors on my part.
********************************
If there was one person you hated in Midtown, it was him. Perfect hair, perfect grades and your academic rival, Peter Parker.
But like, seriously, even Flash didn't annoy you as much as Peter did.
And he just had to interrupt you while you were explaining your interpretation of the poem.
What the hell did he know about literature anyway? Science nerd.
It didn't help that both of you were the chairs of the student council.
"MJ," you yelled out as you ran after her.
"Y/n," MJ acknowledged you as she turned to face you, the wind blowing her hair all out of place.
"Do you have any idea where Peter is?" The exasperation was evident in your voice.
This would be the third meeting he had missed in a row. You didn't understand how the hell he had managed to disappear off to nowhere just before the meeting.
Either the guy knew apparition or he was in serious need of a smack to the head.
"Well, guess I will be alone this time as well," you mumbled to yourself as you walked towards the meeting room.
***
"Ow," Peter groaned as he walked away from the scene of crime.
Falling face first onto a garbage bin wasn't part of his bucket list but sometimes you get stuff you never asked for.
He swung over to the rooftop where he had left his backpack. His phone was buzzing off when he got to it.
16 missed calls from Y/n
"Why is she calling me?" He mumbled as he grabbed his backpack to go back home.
"Oh shit," he said when he realized, quickly changing lanes and swinging towards the school.
***
After school student council meetings are nothing to be excited about. It was pretty evident that Peter didn't like them. You weren't especially crazy about the meetings either.
After all, why would anyone want to sit in a room with some bored ass kids who just wanna go home?
As much as you hated Peter, having him in the meeting did take off some of the burden from you and you would rather he be present. But, no! The guy was apparently continuing his "Let me ditch on the meeting" ritual again.
"Y/n, did you bring the agenda for the segment about lack of sports equipment?" The representative of the football team asked you as you sat at the desk.
"Ah shit, of course Peter had to be in charge of it. Wait, let me go get it from his shelf." You said hurriedly, walking out of the door.
"Thank God Miss Martins asked us to put the files in her staffroom shelf, else I'd be doomed," you thought as you took the shortcut by the swimming pool to reach the staff room.
"Fuck." The tiles beside the swimming pool were slippery and you weren't being careful when it happened.
It was all so sudden.
Water rushed into your mouth and ears as you sank deeper into the pool.
Panic set in and you knew you had to save yourself but a cold yet somewhat warm and tingly numbness settled in your limbs.
Your heart ached and you felt as if someone was squeezing it. The sudden weightlessness mesmerised you.
Your joints felt like lead and your body felt like paper. Your face and chest hurt as you ran out of oxygen...but somehow, it felt good.
You couldn't feel anything but a sense of relief.
You didn't understand where this feeling of satiation was coming from, but it made you feel at ease.
You knew how to swim, but you didn't feel like saving yourself. As your body became oxygen deprived, your struggle increased as you flayed your arms aimlessly in the water.
But somehow you managed to stop yourself from trying to swim to the surface.
An addicting void filled your head as you slowly fell into unconsciousness.
***
Peter ran through the hallway trying to get to the meeting ASAP, cuz no matter how much he hated working with you, he was responsible.
Sure, he did forget about the previous two meetings but being a superhero was hard.
He ran towards the swimming pool corridor to take the shortcut to the meeting room.
He didn't expect his spidey senses to tingle when he passed the deep end of the pool.
He peered into the pool and saw a girl half-floating haphazardly near the floor of the pool.
Without leaving any time for hesitation, he jumped into the pool swimming in to grab the drowning girl.
It was only when he pulled her out of the pool that he saw her face.
"Y/n? Holy shit, Y/n? " He croaked out, rushing to check your breathing.
You weren't breathing.
Peter panicked and checked your pulse only to not feel one. After a moment of confusion and fear, he came back to his senses as he remembered the emergency drill they'd had the previous month.
"Five breaths, then a round of thirty chest compressions, then two breaths and repeat." Peter recited as he laid you on your back He had 911 on call as he started CPR.
He heard a sickening crack but had no other option but to continue. He alternated between thirty compressions and two oral resuscitations like he was taught.
"Wake up, Y/n. Please don't die," he cried as fear, panic and desperation filled his mind.
Her body was cold and her skin was shrivelled up from the water. She didn't look like the prim and proper Y/n he knew.
She looked dead.
Peter was overcome with incomparable relief when she opened her eyes wheezing for air. She wheezed for a while and stared at Peter, looking confused and disoriented.
"Y/n, are you okay? The ambulance is coming, don't worry. You will be fine," he said as he pushed you into the recovery position.
Your consciousness didn't last long. You were in pain and exhaustion.
Peter was on call with his homeroom teacher as you drifted in an out of consciousness.
The ambulance arrived just as Miss Martins reached Peter. She was horrified to see her model student lie unconscious on the wet tiles of the pool, her skin pale and her lips trembling from the cold.
***
You woke up in the hospital with an IV drip and an oxygen mask over your face.
You tried to get up, but the nurse was quick to stop you from doing so.
Soon, people were rushing into your room.
"Mom," you whispered under the mask.
"Baby," she was crying when she sat beside you.
"Wha-," your mom cut you off when you tried to speak.
"Don't strain yourself, you have pneumonia. Take it easy." Your head hurt and your legs ached.
Your throat felt like parchment paper with jelly on it.
"Phlegm and jelly? What a good comparison, Y/n," you thought to yourself.
Slowly, the gravity of the situation weighed in.
You felt like there was a stone in your chest when you remembered how you had let yourself drown.
You didn't try to swim up and save yourself. You had purposefully let yourself drown.
You didn't even know why.
Tears sprung to your eyes as you realised that you had almost killed yourself.
You remembered exactly how you felt underwater. You'd never had these thoughts before.
Why did you do that all of a sudden? Were you suicidal? How could you be? There was nothing wrong with you, you were perfectly fine...Why would you want to die?
The heart-rate monitor went off as you went into a full blown panic attack.
The nurse rushed in, calling for the on-call doctor as she checked your vitals.
Your eyes widened, tears flowing down your face. You wanted to scream but your throat felt like it was clogged shut.
Your hand clamped onto the doctors hand in panic as you fell onto your pillow in exhaustion.
***
"Run, run, run..." You chanted to yourself as you ran through the forest.
You had no idea how you reached there, but somehow you knew that you had to keep running.
You panted as you reached the edge of the forest only to see a huge expanse of rock and a gigantic rock wall in front of you.
You walked over the rocks, your legs shaking from exhaustion. The sun was shining onto you, some of the rays falling onto your eyes giving you a headache.
You fell onto your knees trying to catch your breath.
Suddenly the stone beneath you started rumbling and a loud sound filled the silent atmosphere.
You stood up, afraid and confused. And then it came.
Water rushed from top of the huge rock wall, falling right onto the stone you wear standing.
Your skin hurt, the force of the water bruising it up instantly. Suddenly, you weren't standing on the rock anymore.
The strong current of water swept you off your feet and pushed you along its course.
You tried your best to stay afloat but the current was too strong.
Water rushed around your ears and entered your nose as you struggled to breath.
The water threw your limp body around.
Crack
You woke up screaming, sweat covering your scrubs.
"Y/n, sweetheart, you okay?" Your mother barged in hearing your screams, followed by Peter and MJ.
Seeing Peter, you composed yourself and leant back against the pillow.
"It's nothing. Just a bad dream," You muttered under your breath.
"Honey, I'll wait outside. I have a phone call to make. Meanwhile, you just chat with Peter and Michelle, okay?" Your mom said as she left.
You took a sip out of your water bottle as MJ and Peter made themselves comfortable in the bystander seats.
Your throat still felt clogged up with phlegm, but at least you did not have a fever anymore.
"So, how are you feeling?" Peter spoke awkwardly, avoiding eye contact.
"You scared us, Y/n. One minute you are going out to take a file and the next minute you are being wheeled into an ambo. " MJ said, trying to make her voice monotonous and nonchalant but failing miserably.
"Peter found you." She said, directing her gaze at Peter who was doing his best at avoiding your eye contact.
"I know," you replied, not bothering to look at Peter anymore.
"How did you fall?" Peter asked, still not making eye contact.
"I slipped. " You replied but your gaze was directed towards MJ.
"Thank God you're safe. You are taking swimming classes after this, when you recover, period." MJ says, concern leaking through her usually stone-cold behaviour.
"Anyways, Ned says he will be here soon, I'll go get him," Peter said looking up from his phone. As he stood up to leave, MJ beat him to it and said,
"You stay here with Y/n, I'll go get Ned."
What her intentions behind this were, you didn't know.
You just stared at your arms covered in the hospital bedsheets. A cough racked through your body as you hunched over.
You were surprised when Peter sat beside you and rubbed your back as your body was racked by the violent coughs.
"Here, drink it," Peter said handing you the water bottle. You leant back against your pillow, feeling weak and tired.
"So, how did you find me?" You whispered, straining your throat.
"I was taking a shortcut to the meeting room," He said, finally looking at you as he spoke.
"The whole school is talking," he states out of the blue.
"It's kind of a given with what happened. I don't care," you rasped out.
"Peter-," you began to speak but he cut you off.
"If you are going to say thank you, don't. It's not a big deal. Just don't run beside the pool in those shoes again."
" Well, I wasn't going to say thank you and yeah, of course I need you to tell me not to run beside the pool when all this shit has already happened." You retorted, annoyed at how Peter interrupted you.
"Wow, typical Y/n behaviour," Peter scoffed.
"Well, if this is how you are gonna behave towards me then you might as well have let me die," you weren't gonna give up either.
"Is that what you wanted to do? Die? Did you want to kill yourself?"
Damn, he really hit the nail on the head with that one. But you weren't gonna admit to it. After all, it was an accident in the first place.
"Yeah, sure. You run around searching for a file your partner was supposed to bring but then he is an asshole who ditched three meetings in a row and then when you slip and drown, which you wouldn't have had he came in the first place and then he has the audacity to act all therapist hero-" Your rant was cut off as you went into another coughing fit.
"Fuck, shit, shit, it hurts." You said, clutching your side, your eyes watering from the pain.
"I'll go call a nurse," Peter stood up, panic evident in his eyes.
Saving random people in the streets and saving someone you know, whether you like them or not, are two completely different things.
***
Water in your ears.
Water in your mouth.
Water all around you.

one question i have about jatp fandom is why so many folks seem determined to interpret and portray bobby as full-on evil.
yes, he passed off sunset curve's (luke's) songs as his own and never acknowledged the other guys' existence. that sucks. full stop. but, hear me out. we have zero knowledge of the context of that decision, and a lot of rich room for interpretation in his current-day reaction to things.
bobby was their friend. he was their bandmate. yes, they give him shit in that opening scene but it's not any different than the shit they give each other throughout the series. there's no air of animosity. maybe he's not as close with the other three as they are with each other, maybe, but we really can't tell from what we see. bobby's not in the band despite being a douchebag, at least not according to anything in the text. that's why i don't get the fics that portray him as a total dick who has to be kicked out of the band to make room for julie, sliding him into the role of villain who's then "out to get" the new band.
i see a lot of posts interpreting bobby's transition into trevor and stealing of luke's songs a purposefully vindictive and calculated scheme. hell, i saw a tweet suggesting that bobby was somehow literally behind the poisoning of the guys' hotdogs in a plot to incapacitate them that went too far. and there's nothing in the show that negates these ideas, but there's also nothing that contradicts another interpretation.
picture this: you're seventeen years old, in a band on the brink of superstardom. your bandmates, your best friends, go to get dinner on the biggest night of your lives and they die. they're dead, and suddenly you are all alone. what does that look like? what does that feel like?
you're seventeen, and you're trying to make it in one of the most predatory industries in the world. your bandmates' deaths are a tragedy, a spectacle, and you're the one left to face the fallout. you are all alone. you survived, and you reap the benefits and the guilt that sows. is it so hard to imagine exactly the wrong sort of person stepping up to "help" bobby through all this? so hard to believe that a record exec might show up and be the supportive adult bobby--seventeen years old, just a kid, all alone, grieving, lost--needs in all the wrong ways?
it makes sense, the way this guy says it. of course he can't give up on music. is that really what the guys would want for him? doesn't he owe it to them to finish what they started? they were something special. bobby is something special. the songs are something special, and they deserve to be heard. and it's okay, bobby is convinced, to take all the credit. he's the one that's left. he can't let his image be bogged down in toxic hotdogs and tears. the way to honor sunset curve is through the music. just the music. that's what luke always cared about anyway, right? it makes sense, the way this guy says it.
if you say something enough, hear it enough, you start to believe it. bobby was just a kid. he made mistakes, huge mistakes, but i doubt he made them all on his own. and once you start digging a hole like that, it only gets deeper. it gets to a point where you can't climb out, or you're dead too. and the guys wouldn't want that for him, right? they'd want him to live the dream. for all of them. right?
when we see adult trevor, he really doesn't seem like a douche. yes, he wears sunglasses inside and looks like a substitute teacher and has a mansion, but does he really appear so awful? we see him as a doting father. we hear about him talking music with little julie, proud to see her rocking out in the youtube video. the wtf look he gives carrie when she makes fun of julie at the orpheum speaks volumes about the kind of person he is.
when the guys haunt him, he seems freaked out. he seems guilty. of course he's guilty. what he did was wrong. he knows that. when you're that far deep, you have to learn to cope with the guilt, and it's hard to when it stares you in the face. but something in that scene strikes me as more about his guilt over his friends' deaths than the music, and not in a too-bad-so-sad-i-did-nothing-wrong way. plus, you know, a fair reaction to being, y'know, haunted.
then there's the scene where he sees the youtube video and the scene at the orpheum. bobby's reactions, his expressions in these scenes say so much. he doesn’t seem guilty, really. he doesn't seem afraid to be caught. he seems haunted, terrified, near tears at the sight of his friends, the boys he lost twenty five years ago, the boys he--maybe--was told he had to leave buried for the greater good. or at least decided he had to leave buried for the greater good.
when i see the look on bobby's face when alex poofs onstage at the orpheum, i see a young boy looking at, quite literally, the ghost of his friend. i see bobby realizing that he left them behind when somehow they weren't really gone. realizing that he fucked up. that he failed them and now they're going to know.
but there's no anger there, beneath the surface. if bobby was evil, if trevor was evil, i think we'd see that. he'd have a vibe of out-to-get-them that isn't there.
if trevor was the villain, why wouldn't he confront julie before the show, try to stop the phantoms before they had a chance to get famous and out him as a fraud? he wasn't trying to stop them. he wanted to see them. to see if he was crazy, or if his friends--his ex-friends?--really were back, in some form.
he almost cried watching them. seeing them up there, living (to some extent) their shared dream. i'm sure it felt like some strange, unreal dream to him.
i don't think bobby is a villain. i think he did the wrong thing. but until proven otherwise, i don't think he did it out of maliciousness. i think he tried to make the best of a bad situation and made some wrong calls. but i don't think he's irredeemable, and i don't think the sunshiney sunset curve boys will hold it against him forever.
in fact, i would love a season two where the guys and bobby awkwardly try to hang out and reconnect, try to navigate not only the uncomfortable reality of the choices bobby made but also just the difference in circumstance of three teenage ghosts and one adult lifer with a kid and twenty five more years of worldly experience. do his tastes count, or is he lumped in as a dad? does he have the same speech patterns and opinions and hobbies as he did in the nineties? would the guys make fun of him for always being in bed by ten, or having a bad back?
just. why are we pushing bobby as a villain when we have just as many reasons to cut him a break? isn't there something special in choosing forgiveness and love?

Ok im a little confused are dan ah and yeonghwa together or not? And like I don't get y she needed to break up with him
hi anon!! I believe they are!! Or they are on the way to reuniting at least. We don’t get to see them being together in the final montage when they are together but that last scene in the movie theater was definitely them on a date and more specifically a movie theater date, the one yeonghwa couldn’t get in the past and the one danah didn’t go to because she didn’t know he’d be there! contrary to the other couples they’re on their way back to being together rather than fully established (but that’s also because during the run of the show they were the ones who were less “settled” as a couple since it took them much longer than mijoo and seongyeom to start anything) but you see them smiling and danah looks a little nervous but also happy and mijoo even chuckles at seeing them like this. And even before that movie theater scene she is there with mijoo at the boys’ apartment and yeonghwa says “what’s your happy ending? can we share it? our love will last forever” so I take it that they don’t know yet how this will end, they haven’t made promises to each other but he knows it’s love! He loves her and she loves him! They might not actually live together but also they’re not apart? I mean when they met in front of his painting she not only said “i’ve been inside your heart and it was radiant” (which is HELLO) but also she said that she would make this day, the day she sees him again, her real birthday, that thing he so wanted to celebrate with her and that she couldn’t value because it was a tool in her father’s hands, she made it so that it would be their day
I also saw several people talking about how the opening credits scenes we see between them aren’t featured in the show and aren’t meant to show what happens during the show but rather their future together which I’m definitely on board with !!! It shows them in what seems to be yeonghwa’s workshop but not the one we know now; probably the one he gets once he’s a more well known artist and they’re super at ease with each other and fooling around in a way we haven’t seen them do in the show’s narrative but it’s clearly meant to show that once they are together this is the kind of relationship they would have.
And as for why she had to break up with him, she’s spent most of her life so far being stolen her inheritance by her younger brother because her father declared her birth after his so he could inherit the company and she wanted to fight that and assert herself as the rightful heir to the company and show herself to be the best CEO possible and the best candidate for the shareholders to give her the power over her brother. But to do that as she’s mentioned before to Mijoo she can’t be seen “playing around” with a college student, a “kid”, she needs to strenghten her image and put all her energy into taking back what is rightfully hers (which ties back to how important time always was for them and how time with him was time away from work and from her personal life long battle with power and how she doesn’t have time to waste) and in her world this kind of things come first and she knew that dragging yeonghwa into this wouldn’t work, that it would be a weakness and I think she also felt she couldn’t have it all because she was so used to having everything right from the start not lasting or being taken from her and her control. And yeonghwa understood this which is why he said he’d keep on loving her even if she didn’t have time available for him anymore. There’s also the fact that danah and taewoong seem to have inherited health issues from their father and that her father’s death reminded her that she’s not everlasting and that people who love you are tied to you and all in all she didn’t want to drag yeonghwa into the mess that is her world, a world that wasn’t even welcoming to her! And she wants him to succeed and to live happily away from someone who can’t give him the time he needs. In the past she loved soccer not knowing it would end, but this time she doesn’t want something else she loves to be taken away from her so she puts an end to it herself before it can be jeopardised by what her world requires.
I also think it was important for them to put the painting yeonghwa had to do behind them. To stop using it as an excuse or as a way to evaluate the development of their relationship. It was still a custom order from danah that she first planned to use in a family’s dispute and yeonghwa’s first work as an artist rather than just a painting yeonghwa wanted to make out of love from her or a random order she had placed. It needed to be finished and left in the past so that they could meet on their own terms when he’s not a student anymore, when he’s made his way as an artist and that’s why it’s so important that they meet in front of his painting again, this time hanging in her family’s art gallery (the one she first wanted to put his work in so she could win it over her brother, the one taewoong helped her inherit when she asked him to become her younger brother) but not on her recommendation but of his own merit!! He’s not the student she kept calling him in the past (which was also a way to keep a distance), he’s an artist and now when he calls her Director (although the english subtitles say Mrs.Seo, in korean he says daepyonim which means director, head of the company) it’s not just because she’s her agency’s ceo like when they first met, it’s because she’s her family’s company’s CEO, she’s in charge of her life now, fully!! But also the show willingly leaves things open so that it’s up to them to see if they really do finalise things or not, if they make it last or just keep it short, but no matter what they’ve aknowledge their feelings and what they brough to each other
So this in my interpretation, but I’m sure others have different opinions since it was purposefully left quite open

Modern!Jaskier x Reader Ship Meme
Tumblr media
Prompts taken from this ship meme
Which one texts like a straight white boy?: Of course it would have to be our resident white boy. It isn’t even that he necessarily means to, there’s just an embarrassing amount of overlap between the messages a straight white boy tends to text, and those of your rising star boyfriend. You’d look more into it if it weren’t for the fact that you know there’s no actual malice in it, and because it’s just so sad that it’s funny. If one were to go into the photos saved on your phone, they would’ve surely come upon an entire album of screenshots you’d taken over the years, from when Jaskier would be on tour without you to when he’d just be resting at home while you were out at work. Things like: “Wat r u up to 2nit, cutie? ;)” “I’m probably just gonna play whatever’s on my Watch Later backlog on youtube until I conk out.” “Wild!!! anyway wat would u do if i was there rn~?” Or “Do u miss me? :(” “Of course I do ya dingus!” “Ok....Can we do a quickie over videochat?” “Jas i’m at the store.” “The point still stands.” Or “Watcha thinkin bout? ;)” “About how The Great Gatsby becoming public domain means there’s nothing stopping anyone from making a drag show interpretation called The Gay Dragsby.” “Aaww w/o me? ;)” “...” “WAIT NO I THOUGT YOU’D SAY YOU WERE THINKING ABOUT ME SHIT NO.” “BUT ACTUALLY DO GO ON IM KINDA INTERESTD.” If it were anybody else, you would’ve blocked them. But this wasn’t anybody else. It was your Jaskier: Your foolhardy, constantly horny, but never-short-of-loving Jaskier. And besides, not for nothing, at least they were something you could get a laugh out of.
Which one cried during a fucking Disney movie?: Once again, Jaskier is the guilty party. It’s no secret that he’s the more emotional of the two of you -- he wore his investment in Titanic with pride, after all. But it is a secret that the particular Disney movie to make him cry was Hercules of all things! Not Bambi, not The Lion King, not even Beauty and the Beast, but goddamn Hercules! (On another note, he also cried to Coco. But that barely counts: Literally everyone and their mother has cried during Coco. The only difference here was that Jaskier could relate to being a young man so in love with music while coming from a family that discouraged the pursuit of it.) This isn’t a knock on anyone who enjoys the movie, mind you, but let’s be honest: Out of the Disney animated canon, Hercules isn’t exactly the most . . . emotionally cathartic or heart-string-plucking of the bunch. But just because it didn’t go out of its way to create a crying frenzy doesn’t mean that it’s lacking in some humanity. It is, after all, still a Disney film. The problem is, Jaskier can’t even quite express why it made him cry the night you both decided to watch it. Maybe it had something to do with a young man most people took as a joke trying to achieve greatness? And to be fair, “Go the Distance (Reprise)” and “A Star is Born” differently when you’ve done some growing . . .
Who put a goddamned fork in the microwave?: It only happened once, but you’d never let him live it down. You like to joke that you’d left him to his own devices for just fifteen minutes so that you could take a shower -- of which was completely true -- and that was all he needed for things to go downhill. Nobody wants to think they’d be in the wrong for trusting a 20-something year-old to not be his usually somewhat distractable self. But that particular day, said 20-something year-old decided to occupy that little spot of time to himself with TV and a plate of leftovers. And normally this would’ve been fine and dandy. But normally, Jaskier would’ve just waited for the food to heat before searching for something to watch. It shouldn’t have been too big of an issue that it went the other way around that day, but apparently it was. As much as he wanted to (which honestly wasn’t by much), Jaskier just couldn’t tear his eyes away from the images flashing on the TV. The baby blues were set on the screen the entire while -- up until he heard a faint popping. Followed by a sound he normally only heard in a cheesy sci-fi movie. The problem was, he wasn’t watching anything even remotely science-fiction-y . . . All you were doing when you exited the bathroom was going to grab your lotion. That was literally all you had any expectations for. What you hadn’t expected to come upon was your boyfriend, hollering and diving over the sofa in order to scramble into the kitchen and stop that strange, not-good-sounding sound. Suffice to say, you had to put your shower on hold; it simply had to wait for you to finish fussing, then again for you to finish laughing your ass off. And again because if you entered the shower still laughing, you’d probably slip and break your head open and then Jaskier would have to deal with another possible emergency caused by himself.
Who does the silly hands-over-the-eyes “Guess who?” thing?: You can both be guilty of it, but Jaskier without a doubt does it more. Sometimes he’ll emerge from “his cave” (aka the little nook in the apartment where he likes to mess around and write lyrics or arrangements) on a break and catch an unsuspecting you sitting on the couch or at the dinner table. Other times, it could just be when he comes back from running some errands or doing a quick interview at the local radio station. You don’t mind it much . . . Especially since you can get a rise out of him by purposefully guessing the wrong person. (“Hmmm . . . Could it be . . . my mail-order husband? Boy, that was quick. And all the way from Russia, too . . .” “Uh, no.” “The milkman, finally accepting my invitation to commence a torrid love affair?” “Okay, you know damn well -- ” “Or better yet: My hopes and dreams have manifested, oh, Waluigi, could it really and truly be you!?” “What in the absolute fuck --”)
Who puts their cold hands/feet on their partner?: Because it’s usually himself who presents as being the more mischievous of the two, and because he tends to run the warmest, it always shocks Jaskier when you decide to play dirty and put your cold limbs all over him. Is it childish? Yes. But are his reactions to the sudden feeling of icy flesh hilarious? Also yes. You love to creep up on him when he’s tuning his guitar or scribbling down lyrics, or just minding his own damn business by trying to actually turn in relatively early for once. You love even more to watch him jolt and release the most high-pitched yip a man of his build could ever even joke about making. You’ll still be laughing about it as he scowls at you, cursing your “ghoul hands” and demanding to know if he’s dating a corpse at this point. Of course, no matter how peeved he might be, you can always count on one other thing from his dramatic reactions: Him huffily grabbing your hands into his own and rubbing them warm, or him forcing a park of fuzzy socks on your feet. And just for extra measure, you can be sure that he’ll spend the rest of the night holding you close or cuddling you -- “For exchanging bodily heat purposes,” he will always reason.
Who had that embarrassing reality TV marathon?: You both are guilty of it, actually. The question should really be, who is the least shameful about it. As with most things regarding a lack of shame, it was, of course, our dear Jaskier. Being a musician with a growing following, the little attention whore just can’t miss out on an opportunity to show himself off to his awaiting public. A rising star with relatability and a taste for trash? People eat that shit up! So you’ve learned to be less surprised every time he decides to liveblog himself watching things like Love Island or any of the 90-Day Fiancee spin-offs. In fact, in more recent times, you’ve come to join in with him, adding your own corresponding Tweets and commentary. Though don’t be too shocked once he starts holding polls and letting the public decide what show the two of you should watch next.
Who laughs more during sex?: You do, completely through Jaskier’s own efforts. Jaskier’s always had a pretty lax view of sex. This didn’t change when he met you, of course, but how he specifically portrayed that laxness did undergo some metamorphosis. Before, the entertainer was much more intent on his bedroom experiences being a display of power and an ability to please. Something dramatic and to be taken seriously. He still sees the importance of satisfaction in the bedroom, mind you, but with you, he can’t help but feel more . . . comfortable. With you, it’s a little more okay if he accidentally makes a dumb noise that in no way can be salvaged as sexy. With you, it’s a little more okay if he struggles to get his or your pants off, or if he struggles with removing your bra. And with you, he’s come to find that he’s a lot more okay with sharing a giggle or being a little more loose about things. It’s fine if your fingers tickle him or if he struggles to think of something proper dirty. But it’s even more fine if you think something he says or does makes you laugh, but not in a way that discredits his efforts. When you laugh, it shows that you’re comfortable with him. Comfortable enough to be with him, and be truly vulnerable. So do forgive him if he can’t help but run his fingers up your sides in a tickling fashion, or sloppily string together an innuendo. He simply loves how golden your laughter sounds, even in the throes of passion, intermingled with sweet whimpers and pleas of his name. How the heave of your chest and rippling of your tummy bumpily sync in with the rhythm of his thrusts . . . He just wants to see your smile, your genuine mirth, and bask in it with you. Besides, it serves as excellent song inspiration for him . . .
Who is the little spoon?: It depends on the sway of the day, really. As a whole, you both take turns without much thought simply because you tend to just fall into your positions. Some days, you just happen to lay into him in a way that makes you the little spoon. Other days, he conks out next to you in a manner that most could consider would make you the big spoon (or jet pack). Neither side really fights how it plays out unless one or the other may feel small and vulnerable, or just plain tired and in need of comfort. You often find yourself playing the role of the more dominating position during those first few days after Jaskier returning home from either a quick tour, or after finishing a long week of hours upon hours in the studio, or whatever kind of press-related nonsense his management team told him he needed to do. For as much as your boyfriend loved the spotlight, the truth was he was still quite capable of burning out and needing time to himself. Or, at the very least, just time with you. Even if that means he’s asleep for most of it, with you clinging to his back as he drifts off into a much-needed sleep. He makes sure to return it tenfold when you need just the same. Sure, your occupation may not be of the same nature as his own, but that didn’t mean you were in any less need of his cuddling. In fact, with him being gone as often as he was, Jaskier couldn’t help but feel almost guilty for not always being able to provide you with the basic comforts of being a constantly present boyfriend. Hence why the moment he would see your fatigued body crossing the threshold of your apartment, he would be all over you, ushering you into a quick shower, followed by a quick and simple dinner or snack, and capped off with him cuddling about you from behind. It didn’t matter if you’d come home right in the middle of a writing frenzy, or even if he’d been in the middle of searching for a breakthrough with an arrangement -- for as vain and bullheaded as Jaskier could be, he knew he owed you at least this much. You already put up with so much of his nonsense; this was quite literally the least he could do, both for you and for himself. Besides, he who was he to fight against the feeling of you wiggling closer into his hold, to deny himself the sound of your soft breathing as you lay yourself vulnerable to him? The fact of the matter is that he simply isn’t. He couldn’t be. Maybe in the beginning when things were still so unsteady and uncertain, but never now, when things had become so . . . well, what he could only describe as being “the both of you”. The both of you, molded and entwined, never wanting to let go. Never planning on it, either.

What I think could have made the finale hurt less:
- If they really wanted to kill off Dean (which 100% don’t think should’ve happened), have the actual monster kill him while he’s in the act of saving someone not pushing him into a rebar (that’s so stupid) and don’t give him a drawn out speech. We’ve seen that in season 9. Let him tell Sam he loves him, because that is character growth for Dean to be able to say that.
- having him die in the act of saving someone shows that at his core dean was acting out of love not anger or as a killer. Call back to Cas’ speech giving it more impact.
- Show Dean and Sam miss Cas more than what we got. You can even keep the same message about needing to live to honor his sacrifice. Again character growth - not falling into the same pattern of making deals or risking they’re live to bring someone back but still acknowledging that they miss him.
- don’t have the hunt be an unfinished hint from John. Dean is not his dad blunt little instrument. Have it be a choice completely their own to go on the hunt.
- have people be at deans hunter funeral. Show there were people on earth how cared about him. May have been affected by covid so I can let it slide if that is the case.
- don’t bring back a random character from season 1 no one cares about.
- have Sam grow old. But show that it is Eileen he married and had a life with. Show that he stepped back from hunting but was still involved in the life - kinda like bobby a touch point for the hunter network.
- if covid really was the reason Misha couldn’t be in it (which I don’t buy one bit, why could they Jim beavers and not Misha?) have Bobby greet Dean in heaven. Convo pretty much the same but have Dean aknowldge Cas is alive. Have Dean pray to Cas. Simple quick prayer while he’s driving, intercut with sams montage with his happy years with his family. “Hey Cas, I hope you have your ears on.” And then just let Dean say he loves cas, because Cas deserves to hear one person say that to him. Then have the sound of Cas’ wings and have Dean smile. Bonus points for a ‘hello Dean’. Then finish the episode the same. Dean greets sam on the bridge it ends with just the two of them on screen but still aknowldges the found family.
- better ending with Misha being in the final bc the covid excuse is bull. Have Cas greet Dean when he gets to heaven, you can’t convince me he wouldn’t and frankly I think it’s more poignant than Bobby doing it. Cas explains how Jack saved him and they rebuilt heaven together. Have Dean tell Cas he loves him and have them hug. Still open enough that it can be interpreted as platonic since they’re cowards. Have Cas say everyone is waiting inside. If covid wasn’t a thing have them go in and have the big reunion scene they claim was going to happen interspersed with Sam and happy family years montage. When Sam dies have Dean exit the roadhouse to greet Sam. End with just the two on screen but we know the rest of their family is just inside so they are no longer alone. Covid ending have Dean go on his ride by himself and have Cas say I’ll just wait here then with a fond smile (gotta love call backs). End the show the same way, but we know Dean just needed a minute (heaven time works different right? He doesn’t actually drive around for 40 years in my mind) and his family including Cas are waiting for him and dean. Bonus points if they manage to line up any good found family moments with the lyric ‘now your life’s no longer empty’ bc that’s poetic.
- have Jack appear at some point. He was part of the Winchester family before he became god he deserves to see his family
Note I still don’t like this ending bc it still feeds into the idea dean could only be happy in death which is a bullshit hurtful message and still plays into the bury your gays trope ((they died its bury your gays) and they purposefully left dean open for interpretation so him dying is 100% bury your gays, actually it’s worse than just bury your gays it’s bury your gays and never aknowldge them again them bc if you do you’ll have to address the queerness in some way no matter how small or ‘open for interpretation’ it is and then expect the queer audience to be thankful for crumbs) but it’s better than what we got.

My plot idea is weird and more of an odd friendship based sort of thing. Hopper manages to escape the birds thanks to a lucky gust of wind sending a leaf or something into the mother bird’s face, but not before Hopper tears his wing. He then tries to fly only to get picked up by the wind as well.
Eventually he’s tumbled into a small neighborhood and falls unconscious. A human finds him injured on the driveway, nurses him back to health, mends his wing and lets him free. He then comes back yearly to visit, gang in tow. Afterall, he’s greatful(and the human gives em free food so…).
Aw 🥺 this plot is so sweet!
Hopper would have to go through a lot of inner turmoil for this one, especially to get to a point where he imprints on this human. I most imagine a child (girl preferences for me, but a boy could work too) finding him.
Because of Hopper's outward personality and that fear of being vulnerable, this plot would be really hard to write. All while keeping him in character, anyway. Considering that he and the human can't speak to each other -- although I think Hopper could reasonably understand the child -- it makes mutual understanding difficult between them. And that aspect of communication is what really drives character development.
BUT...this could work. Imagine Hopper waking up in a strange new environment. Everything is bigger. He's clearly disoriented and already trembling from the previous night's events. This little girl (or boy, your choice) comes into the room with a skip in her step. Hopper startles when he realizes she's coming toward him. Pressing himself up against the wall, he scrambles to get away. His wing buzzes and the uneven thrust knocks him off balance.
The girl easily manages to catch him, unintentionally being rough as he's still resisting. Hopper takes this force as a sign of his demise. He fully believes she's about to squish him. Hopper -- in a familiar state of panic -- digs his claws into her fingers as she lifts him to her eye level. His own eyes are squeezed shut and his breathing has become manic.
Ever so gently, the girl using her other hand to brush a small finger over his antennae. Hopper flinches at first but gradually squints his eyes open when he recognizes the action to be similar to petting. When he fully meets her gaze, she smiles warmly and draws her fingers along his antennae. The poor girl doesn't quite realize, though, how sensitive they are.
She's taken aback when he jerks away from her hand, antennae vibrating rapidly from the overstimulation. "Did I hurt you? I'm sorry," she redirects her finger to brush the underside of his jaw, "I'll try to be more careful."
He calms down again and remains tense as she tries to soothe him. This was new. Way out of his comfort zone, to say the least. A strong and fearless leader being subdued and petted like some...some animal. Granted, he is indebted to her now as she did save his life. But no debt could humble him to this point of vulnerability.
It's at this moment he understands the situation better. This girl could easily clench her fist and in a moment his insides would collapse in on themselves. She could, for whatever reason, rip out his other wing with barely any effort.
Now, it isn't so much as feeling vulnerable. He absolutely IS.
But the fact that she's holding back...she's purposefully controlling her natural strength to keep from hurting him more. Hopper finds himself relaxing.
The girl sits down on her bed, fixated on the grasshopper. Hopper swallows some of his panic, "Who...who are you?" He hated the way his voice shook.
She smiled at the chirping noise he made, unaware they formed words in his own language. "Aw, you're so cute!" She refrained from squealing.
Hopper set his jaw, offended by the comment. "Cute? I'd rather you kill me then call me that again," he bared his teeth. The girl moved him closer to her face and his heart dropped again, "I didn't mean that!"
She gently kissed the top of his head and continued petting him, "I'm gonna name you...Hoppy."
Hopper blinked and tried pushing her finger away from his cheek, "Kid, I have a name already. And stop--" He froze when her finger brushed over the left of his chin.
The girl awed at his eyes lidded, "Aw, you like that? I can't wait to show you to Mommy. She likes bugs, too."
Blasted girl. He tried shaking his head to concentrate but that spot she kept rubbing was making it difficult. "No...I don't--" He vainly pushed her finger, "...like it." He would have had half a mind to bite her finger if that half could clear from its haze.
She giggled and watched him chirp again, antennae rattling like little maracas. "We're gonna be best friends, Hoppy." The girl set him on her pillow, him being much too dazed to escape.
He opened his mouth to argue the statement, but she rubbed over that spot again and his words came out as a yawn. Against his will, his eyelids fell heavy. The girl took the opportunity to scrounge up some items in her room for a makeshift home for her little friend. "Hoppy will love it," the ideas were already tangible in her mind.
<><><><><><>
Yeah, at some point I accidentally switch from third person narration to third person past tense 😂 I got a little carried away with the story.
But this is really cute and I'd love to see your interpretation of their friendship!

phf rants
as i’ve made clear im rlly impacted by this book. dont mind my lowkey venting
damn this is long
mista's coldness towards fugo / the stadium scene as a whole
it really really hurt me to see mista treating fugo, his old partner, his old friend like a dangerous enemy. i know he had his valid reasoning, but that very specific kind of angst shatters me. mista had his gun pointed at fugo for the entire stadium scene, not wavering for even a second. the worst part? it seemed like mista was trying to purposefully incite fugo to snap by right out insulting him and his stand, saying he was glad when fugo didn’t get on the boat. it seemed like he was egging fugo on just so he had an excuse to kill him, to get one more thing off his list of concerns. fugo as a person meant nothing at all to mista. when mista said “kill these traitors, or we’ll kill you” i wanted to cry. mista goes on about hoe fugo is a massive threat because purple haze is unhinged and can wipe out the enitre population if he wanted. fugo politely corrects him, as PH only has 6 capsules and can only attack 6 times in a day. did i see myself in that scene and feel fugo’s pain of just wanting to be left alone and not have to think about the past or the future, silent and melancholic during intervention and just feeling like the only way out is to kms right then and there? thats a secret ill never tell.  phf makes me smad.
there were some little details in purple haze feedback that got me thinking as well. in the 6 months between fugo’s leave and his cold reuniting with mista, fugo was playing piano at a bar. Most of the people who bring this up refer to it as just some cool trick he could get because he’s a rich kid. he is not. in flashbacks, it’s shown that bruno only knows how to cope with distress by isolating himself and bottling everything up. god, did i feel that. sheila e’s life goal was to kill illuso (to avenge her sister) and swore her life to giorno after finding out he killed him, it’s ironic though because in reality fugo had killed him, and in the first part of the book, they weren’t exactly friends.
another part that really just made me wanna sob and bash my head into a wall was seeing fugo’s pure self hatred. since he was a child, he had it drilled into his head that if he couldnt produce results, he was worthless. after being disowned and thrown into jail with no future, he was completely hopeless. even after bruno came and took him in, he was never free of his liabilities. no matter what he did, he couldnt help seeing himself as some monster, failure, and burden. (kinnie moment) it worsened when he had to abandon bruno’s gang, his only saving grace was bruno, his light, hope, and acceptance. now he was stripped of that, gripped in fear knowing too well that betraying passione would end horribly. deep in his heart he wanted so badly to join them, to join his found family, but the logic he had drilled into his own head of knowing that betrayal was foolish and futile wouldnt let him have his way. hes back on the streets, just like how he was (or wouldve been after getting out of jail) after being disowned. he got a piano gig at a bar, and let himself wallow in grief and depression for 6 months. throughout the events pf PHF, we still see him clinging to memories and trauma. they say “what you let consume you will define you”, and i couldnt begin to describe it any better. putting all of the guilt and blame on his own shoulders, feeling he deserved it all and more.
either i wasnt paying enough attention (this bitch got some rereading to do) or the purple haze distortion scene was kinda underwhelming. his character arc felt kinda rushed, like most of the book was establishing his bad state and constant flashbacks, and then all of a sudden he has confidence in his abilities and believes in himself. of course, im overjoyed he did get growth, and had a happy ending (depends on how you interpret it). stan fugio
vittorio’s fascination with pain really got me feelin. hgghhhhhhhh hh hnnhhhhh. he describes it well, wanting to feel his life force/energy in the form of pain so that he didnt ‘go extinct’, and the writing of it just saying straight up ‘cutting himself’ ‘hurting himself’ ‘self harming’ made my skin crawl. as someone who suffers with shit like that its both painful and relieving to know a character who has similar habits, whether it’s for the purpose of activating his stand or just to cope.
2 times in phf, fugo does some kind of suicide attack. of course, he survives both. it’s never made clear whether or not he intended to die/didnt mind dying as it was a way of accomplishing his mission, but either way it got me heavy breathing. the last one especially, when he bites a virus capsule to kill volpe. did he know he’d grown and purple haze would miraculously save him with his own genius plan, or was he going out with a bang? luckily for me it wasnt really gone over like ‘hey you couldve died from that are you doing ok mentally’ or else i mightve felt nauseous reading it. im all for angst, but idk how much more i can take when its day 87 of quarantine and im numb as fuck just waiting to break down.
angelica’s stand night bird flying (is probably not that complicated im just fuckin dumb) made fugo and everyone else hallucinate/dream. in fugo’s dream, it was pretty much an ideal au.  he was permitted to see his grandma when she was near death (preventing the professor scene), met bruno (fisher boy with fisher dad) on a boat and they became friends, nara went back to school and was doing good overall, abba remained a cop but didnt do any bad things, the whole group was all just good friends having a fun time. god i would licherally sell my body and soul for them all to be happy like that and all live.
the concept of abandonment also messed me up, just the feeling that everyone say fugo as someone who abandoned the group in their hour of need out of selfishness made me wanna cry angry sad depression tears. hes a good man! let him be ok and happy i will fight all fugo haters no cap
every time i think back to the fugio restaurant scene i just. idk man it hurts me. the pessimistic bitch in me says that it would be unrequited and fugo would only be more sad because even through his efforts, he’s just another pawn working for giorno. on the other hand, it makes me soft n giddy because?? omyfucking god giorno asks fugo to call him giogio when NOBODY ELSE IN THE BOOK had referred to him as that. the fuckin “if grief anchors your feet, let me share it” part makes me wanna jusyt. complete my kin transformation into fugo and be a sobbin g  shaking mess in his arms as he tells me its all gonna be ok. was that a vent? absolutely. anyways, its pretty damn special for the don of the mafia to invite you to breakfast at a fancy restaurant before the place opens and its just the two of you. giorno fixes fugo’s injuries and tells him that he’s proud of his growth, and that he knew fugo could do it. dude?????? if i didnt already know i was a lonely affection/affirmation/attention starved bitch that wouldve done it for me.
holy fuck that was longer than i expected it to be. i do feel better tho
