unable to stop dwelling on the discworld trouser leg of time where, in the penultimate fight scene in Nightwatch, Carcer manages to kill teenage Sam Vimes.
Which means that the future that Duke Vimes came from can no longer exist, which means he can’t go home. Meanwhile you’ve got a bunch of history monks with stored up temporal energy, a prepared space outside of time, and the need to do some desperate damage control before the Auditors get involved. Death shows up, reality is unweaving, Sam is reading Carcer his discworld miranda rights because what else is he supposed to do.
and finally, with little other option, the monks de-age Sam so he fits the time period and send him back out into the fray.
(they didn't call it deageing of course. His memory is hazy, splintered during that terrible in between moment, They....took the time out of him? Sanded away the edges of his self for a terrible, workable fit? It...wasn't a good feeling.)
Just—damn. Sam Vimes having to live his whole crapsack life over again, but this time as his disillusioned-reillusioned, unwillingly-character-developed, noir-epic, Duke of Ankh, Commander Sir Samuel Vimes self.
Younger (Older? He's never felt so Old, His steps so Childlike, reality twisting in his gut like one of Dibbler's pies) Sam Vimes walking around in a haze after the revolution. Desperate to go home, knowing he can’t. Wanting to drink. Knowing he can’t.
The whole precinct feels pity, he really took Keel’s death hard, hardly speaks except to do his job. Eventually he has to grit his teeth and start being present, because what else is there to do?
Resists the urge to drink until Colon takes the whole watch out to celebrate because -he’s going to be a father!
Come on Sammy, one drink won’t kill you— and after the first drink he’s cracking jokes and after the second hes smiling and after the third hes honestly the life of the party and sometime after that he’s crying about how he was going to be a father and my wife would be ashamed if she saw me drinking like this and—
Oh shit, Did anyone else know he had a wife?? A PREGNANT wife??? What—aren’t you like 12—no you're 17 now aren't you but when did—
You guys n’ver met ’er—oh gods none if you ev’n know ‘er, is jus’ me...
What—when did you lose—
I lost her the same damn day I los’ ev’rythin else, whadya think...bleeding Carcer...the fuckin revolution...
So! That! Sam only vaguely remembers the night, but rumors travel faster than light on the disc, so by the next day the whole damn city knows about poor Sam brung low by the loss of his poor, tragic, pregnant wife, so young to be a widower, and the Seamstresses nod because they already knew, don’t ask them how, somethings you just have to know in that trade.
And his mother—I don’t know, sue me, I’m a time travel fiend but there’s something deeply intriguing about a man meeting his dead parent, who is somewhat younger than him, and stepping into the old relationship like a badly fitting thing that's supposed to fit well. She would know, right? How would she deal with her son’s impossible grief? Maybe she wouldn’t know—he spent most of the time out of the house, running with different street gangs, maybe he avoids her until she dies and lives with the guilt twice over. God, we don’t even know her name. There’s just so much narrative and emotional potential that I don’t even know where to start.
When he’s on duty, which is most time - it’s agonizing because at first he remembers cases, saves lives that would have been lost. But the more time passes, the hazier his memory because in the original timeline he was becoming an alcoholic. Fuck! A kid dies and he could have saved her if he hadn’t been such a drunk, if he had just remembered where the asshole lived, but it’s all a haze, and he wants to drown out his guilt, but that’s what caused this in the first place.
Good young Sammy, who spends his rare off-time in dusty libraries (and yes, the irony that he’s apparently Carrot now is not lost on him) reading gods-only-know.
It’s not like he can ask the wizards for help, cutthroat and vicious as they are now in the not-so-distant-past.
Good young Sam, who...talks to the Broken Drum’s pet Bouncer like he’s a real person and not a dumb rock? That’s a bit weird, but he’s a bit of a funny guy.
Good old Sam, who believed the testimony of the dwarf who said the humans were trying to rob him and let the dwarf go??
the PROBLEMS this man would cause, good grief. Can you imagine a moderately progressive middle aged man with some degree of begrudging diversity and equity training that he did, for all his sins, pay attention to, suddenly going back to like, 1990, going back just 30 years, and going...oh damn this is kind of fucked up, no man you can’t say that, holy shit.
Except Sam’s lived through even more rapidly shifting social moroes! There’s no seamstress guild, there’s no women allowed inside the university, there’s no black ribboner’s society. People hunted trolls for their teeth! But Sam can’t just unlearn everything, and he can’t shut up, and he has no real luck and anyway he would absolutely get himself (temporarily) fired.
FUCK. Sam has no idea what to do with that. None. Zero clue. Wanders around in a haze until that dwarf he saved from police brutality finds him and insists on repaying the debt. No, he insists, do you have any idea what debt means to a dwarf?
“Sort-of?” he replies hesitantly, and that honest admission of incomplete knowledge shows a hell of a lot more respect and understanding than any self proclaimed dwarf-expert ever did.
Gets a job as a surface man, hauling rocks into the city. It’s backbreaking work, but, in true Discworld fashion, it’s also one hell of a workout (again the irony of being Carrot is not lost him. he freezes for a minute while hauling a rock cart, when he remembers he's technically Lost Nobility too, in a strict sense, but someone curses at him in the street and he's comfortingly grounded)
And here is where this au slides into a SPECTACULAR romantic comedy, BEAR WITH ME. Because in his time on the Watch he’s already done noir, action adventure, war story, detective who dunnit, psychological horror, but guards guards only allowed him to be a romance protagonist in an extremely limited context.
Give me righteous, twenty-something-looking, can’t-say-he-doesn’t-have-style, young Sam Vimes, not an alcoholic, being fed three square meals a day by his dwarven forced found family, hauling rocks. He is startled to find him bumping his head on a low hanging bar that he doesn’t think used to be there, eventually realizing that he’s an inch or two taller than he remembers. Huh. Guess all that bearhuggers really did stunt his growth.
Still doesn’t get what some of the looks from women he’s getting are about, sure, he’s dirty but so is everyone else. Fine, he took his shirt off, but it’s hot out, there’s far wrinklier than him hauling heavy loads, get a life.
Happens to glance in the Ankh one day when it’s particularly slow and shiny and is startled to realize that he might be turning heads for a different reason. Oh. Right, not that he was ever a heartbreaker, but he did alright for himself... when he was a younger and his face hadn’t been broken so many times. Which...it isn't now.
Is mildly disturbed by the revelation.
Especially once things blow over at the precinct and what with high mortality rates, he ends up with getting hired again. The boys are delighted to have him back, nevermind that he’s an odd one, noone is ever quite in your corner like Vimsey, absence makes the heart fonder, no one else works that hard, and he’s not even competition for promotion. All around great guy, we should set him up with somebody and just, no.
It just keeps getting worse! He’s literate! He’s a feminist! He believes abuse victims! He’s got a tragic backstory! He’s unreasonably good in a fistfight! He’s kind to animals! Word gets around that there’s a good man on the watch and he’s just waiting for a good woman to come snap him up. The widower excuse doesn’t hold people off completely, and for some it’s its own sort-of appeal.
Things REALLY become stressful after he rescues that carriage full of noblewoman.
What’s he supposed to do? Let them get robbed? Or worse? Chasing down and beating up 10 goons is as easy as beating up one, when they’re that stupid, getting separated like that, drunk and distracted, and he knows these streets better than anyone, really it’s nothing. And oh lord he’s Modest too.
I mean, they were genuinely greatful, as genuine as people like that are capable of being, the skill having grown rusty. And then there is something...magnetic about the man. An air of command.
So, soon enough you get Lady Marigold of Marigrave calling on Treckle Road for that gallant young officer who rescued them, she really needs to thank him. And Viscountess Elanor Thitzferal specifically requesting that he guard her at her next soiree. And Baroness Julieta van Shoeholten insisting that he come to her home while her husband’s away, for... manly protection.
Aaaah just zero sympathy from the guys. None. 'It’s become a competition, they’re just trying to see who can get me into bed first, it’s like I’m a piece of meat, you can’t send me sir, the Marquess greeted me in a nightee last time you made me go to—' and 'small gods Vimes are you even listening to yourself, shut the hell up'.
Simultaneous to this, (again this is several years into the timeline) swamp dragon accessories come into style. Which means abandoned swamp dragons scrounging on the street. Vimes takes one back to his apartment, blows his paycheck on dragon medicine, and eventually, heart in his chest, brings it to the Ramkin estate. The sunshine orphanage doesn’t even exist yet and he’s just standing outside the gates like an idiot, what is he thinking. Turns around, but her carriage is pulling up and—
well. they meet. it's cute. he's never felt so young. he's never felt so old, too old for her, too poor—
and certainly her thoughts linger too long on the awkward, kindly, handsome young commoner, but is it any wonder she doesn't quite connect it to the stern, dangerous, sexy young guard the ladies seem to be in some quiet, cuthroat competition over?
i have this gorgeous, absurd scene in my head in which Vimes is strong armed into standing guard at some high society soiree and one of the pushiest ladies insists he dance with here, or, if he prefers, if he's not confident about his skills, he can dance with her in-private at her home and he’s like [grinding teeth, looking for a way out, seeinf one] “I would be honored to dance with you.”
Steps right into some ultra-complex dance with multiple partner swaps (she never thought he'd pick this one, devilishly intimidating to one not strictly trained, and you barely spend anytime with your first partner).
But he does alright. Better than alright, for a common man, sometimes misstepping but his hands and feet always end up where they need to be. Raises several eyebrows part way into the song because he's throuwing in some slightly scandalous, no innovative, extra lifts and twirls that wouldn't become fashionable for another decade or two. Who even is that guy? Some out of towner? No, no he's in a guards uniform...how very strange.
Gets to Sybll and she's used to embarrassment during these dances, she tries to get out of them when she can... but can't always. Men awkwardly skipping the lifts, or worse, trying and failing. But him — oh it's him, the one who helped little Erold, and looked at her like—like—well like she was someone beautiful. And he's doing it again, and he's strong and there's a quiet moment where she's in the air, they lock eyes, and the rest of the room melts away.
And then the partners change again, the moment ended.
Just...living throught it all again. To the left, a dance he almost knows the steps to, throwing others off balance with erratic moves , honest mistakes, and delibrate stepping on toes. Improvising. Ruining. Improving. Getting far, far too much attention.
Hes almost excited when the first assassains start coming after him. It's like a hobby.
Everyone tells him he should get a hobby.
Interactions with young vetinari...I don't have the energy to write it all down, the slow circling in on each other, both burning with the need to fix the city, save it, their city.
needless to say he ends up fired again, life under real threat after offending some high lord.
Conveniently enough he has an employment opportunity- bodyguard to fucking Vetinari on his 'grand sneer.' The bastard knows vimes isn't what he seems, though sam is pretty sure that he doesnt know the exacts.
Vetinari hypothesis:(the ghost of keel? Keels son, with some hereditary curse? Or a larger spirit of justice possessing a string of unrelated souls? He knows things he shouldn't- mind reader? Fortune teller? Havelock once arranged for a wizard to bump into him on the street, the magical fool gave an odd double look and then muttered something about destiny looping in on itself giving him a headache. Destiny? Lost noble? And hes far too familiar with sybyl, one of the few bearable noblewomen in this city. And his thoughts on guilds, when havelock can trip him into speaking... Most of all, if hes reading him at all correctly (for all the mystery hes not that hard to read, unless thats a very clever cover) then it seems that behind those dark haunted eyes is Respect. Loyalty. For vetinari. What an interesting man. A puzzling asset. An intriguing threat. )
Did I mention the timeline is changing, healing slowly around the place where it was torn? Healing enough around scars to perhaps get some flexibility back, with some painful stretches and...massaging of said scar tissue?
And hes heading to unresting uberwald, a place where a werewolf pack still hunts humans and, truely unrelated but perhaps equally exhausting, an eldritch spirit of vengeance just might be looking to stretch its legs in a hapless vessel?

saw a post yesterday (3 months ago now) that was like finale reactions from not-wincest shippers saying wincest won - but wincest shippers said it wasn't even wincest. which brings me around to my pondering how there's this divide of the ship into wincest / weirdcest / gencest which I'm still not totally sure the difference between the last two. but like, if I'm talking about wincest, I'm not talking about them with fucking required? it's just the dudes in a not-strictly-familial-platonic relationship. which to me, canonically, even in the most literal reading they've got a queerplatonic situation, so that qualifies
i think what i'm boggling over is that (sometimes?) the ship isn't the ship (the key is the key, man) it's like, ship+what they're doing with their dicks.
which led me to reading fanlore's gen and slash and smarm etc articles -> looked for a gencest article, reading the gen sam & dean one and the sam/dean one which is understandably packed with the related shipwar-ish stuff and i'm reminded i just. shouldn't read what anyone has to say about ships and this show. I feel like I'm rarely on the same page as anyone else, which is impressive in a fandom this large. i still don't really understand how the lines between them get drawn. but after all that i read, it sounds like people aren't really in agreement out there on the internet either.
so, this has been in my drafts since december and another post/reply got me to open it back up, someone saying if you want to tag the non-sexual situation it's gencest or weirdcest, not wincest. but I think now my personal understanding/interpretation is that those are just a subset of wincest, not standalone. I think another component of why it gets under my skin too is the inherent devaluation of queerplatonic relationships. a definition borne of the aromatic and asexual communities
and who's to say it isn't romantic? if the lines and beats are romantic, does it stop being so because they're brothers? would we have the same splitting up of the ship if they weren't related? (can guess what my answer would be)
ANYWAY. this was supposed to be how one ship has been split in a way I haven't seen before and find really weird. I can see how say, on tumblr, it's nice to have a tag that's just the qpr relationship, but not to the exclusion of the main ship.
I thought on AO3 it would be more clear cut, but of the 282 tagged with "Gencest | Emotionally Incestuous but Non-Sexual Dean Winchester and Sam Winchester" only 118 are tagged with Dean/Sam. and in the 79 works tagged "Weirdcest | Dean Winchester and Sam Winchester Appear Incestuous to Others Due to Lack of Boundaries", 40 are Dean/Sam.
and while I like the expansion of the tag name to include a definition, what even is emotionally incestuous :p and if there's incest in your definition, how does that not fall under the ship rubric
but being that there's 34,387 works tagged with Dean/Sam, and while there's more things tagged with gencest pre-2020, the majority is 2019+. and weirdcest is nearly exclusively 2021+. so, large consumer of fic that I am, I am sure things that would fall under those labels weren't tagged as such in the main tag.
going back to fanlore, the article about qprs:

and yet, look at me the hypocrite, because I tag stuff with "sam and dean" that are the canonical qpr things, but I wouldn't tag wincest because I know a lot of people would have it filtered. whereas anything remotely shippy in xfiles canon, I tag with msr. *facepalm*
and the advice/explanation I've received about tagging other people's posts, canon gifs, what have you; as wincest - that you might be putting their personal squick right in their notifications. so, don't do that! and I've internalized those rules.
and I guess there's plenty of people that watch the show and think they're just regular brothers ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
spn fandom is a minefield even with my skirting at the edges of it.

Working on Lost in Time - with Endgame!Tony stranded in the past with Loki
It was started in December 2021. I have posted several hundred thousand words since then and written several thousand in other drafts. My writing is different now so going back to it is odd. I love the Tony and Loki in it though. Guess I just have to re-write the 56k word draft to my current standard (sighs in writer)
Otherwise no one else but me will get gems such as these (mostly dialogue below)

“Who are you?”
The person jumped and suddenly metal flowed over his body and he was fully encased in a suit of red and gold armor. He turned around. “Name’s Tony.”
“That doesn’t explain who you are.” Loki studied the man. He seemed afraid of him, encasing himself in a literal suit of armor was a big clue. Loki hadn’t seen anything like that armor though and he was instantly curious.
“Just passing through. You can go back to whatever it was you were doing.”
“No one simply passes through here. It’s hidden from sight and magics. I’ll ask again, who are you?”
“Seriously no one you need to know about, Reindeer Games.”
“You look and speak like you know me, you’re afraid of me, yet I’ve never met you. Answer me.”
“It’s none of your business, green eyes. I’m not staying here long.”
Loki kept up his glare and stayed silent, purposely unsettling this Tony person.
It worked as Tony continued. “I’m just waiting on Granny Weatherwax to come back, she’s helping me with something. So shoo.” He waved his metal encased hand.
Loki laughed openly. “You just shooed me? Me? And you seem to know me? You’re strange.” Loki liked puzzles. He was going to put this Tony one together.
His laugh startled Tony visibly, he jumped again. “You laugh? In a good way?”
“I am the God of Mischief. I like to laugh.”
“What the hell happened to you then?”
“Whatever are you talking about?”

athenaeum
athenaeum is the result of a high school creative writing class. it mostly came together over march - may of 2022, by using escapril prompts and assignments.
it's centered around my coming-to-terms with my stance on catholicism and how the church treats/has treated me. on my relationship with god. it also gave me the space to come into my writing style.
when read through in its entirety, it's meant to mimic a museum walkthrough. i had divided the "painting" poems with the "exhibit" ones for this purpose. of course, being overwhelmed by sharing my work with others, and a vulnerable piece at that, made me neglect to mention that to literally everyone.
(its a museum walkthrough folks. that's why not every poem is religion based)
it opens with "sacraments", which is probably my second favourite of the entire chapbook, and what gave me the idea for the overall theme. the first draft was written fairly quickly after receiving an assignment with the question along the lines of, "what is something you needed answers for as a child? did you receive that answer?"
it closes with "To The Curator", and is actually the first poem that i had written in this collection, chronologically. it was written in december 2021, after a long stint of writers block, and existed in my notes app in its original 3 am version for quite a while. it was unearthed for one of our first assignments for this class, and the feedback that i received made me believe (for one of the first times) that i could be good at this. i'll say more about it when it's posted ♡

I'll Be the One by Lyla Lee | F/M both bisexual!!
This book follows Skye, a Korean-American bisexual girl in high school who wants to be the next K-Pop star. Her dancing is incredible but the biggest barrier to everyone else is her body. As someone is half-Korean and considered plus-size in that culture, this book definitely felt like something I've always wanted. It hurt but I definitely understood every character's intentions and I loved every second of it. (Even the painful parts. Do we all have mommy issues??) I will definitely read this again whenever I'm feeling down after hearing another Ajumma comment on my body.
"There are so many forms of Asian-parent tough love, where parents say and do mean things only because they want the best for us. Is all of that “tough love” abusive? What distinguishes tough-love parenting from abuse? After all, Mom did say she’s afraid of what other people might say about me. Even though she is mostly afraid that people might think she’s a bad parent, isn’t the fact that she’s worried about me a good thing?"

Jaskier was the second most popular whore in all of Oxenfurt because his attention wasn’t an act; Jaskier fell in love easily and with almost everyone around him. He fell out of love just as quickly, which was a blessing because even a bard can only take so much heartbreak, but just a smile, a word, a glance or even a gesture and he was hopelessly in love. He loved almost all his customers earnestly and they always left with a spring in their step, a pleased blush on their cheeks or a small, secretive smile on kiss swollen lips.
He was authentic. Who knew that it would be his personality and not his species that would draw Witchers to him like moths to a flame?

WIPs I hope to finish one day 😭
Africa
When Ian lands himself an internship with famous wildlife photographer Mickey Milkovich he can't believe his luck. Spending one month traveling through South Africa with his big hero is a dream come true. The two are off on a wild adventure but there's something mysterious about Mickey who seems to be holding more to his chest than just the tricks of the trade Ian had hoped to learn from him.
Stolen Goods
From the outside Ian and Mickey seem like two ordinary guys. Ian works at an animal shelter while Mickey runs a garage. At least, that's what they tell anyone who asks. Ian's shelter doubles as a front for his side business, selling the priceless artifacts of the museums he robs blind to the highest bidder or the country they came from.
Meanwhile Mickey fixes up cars that have clearly been stolen, no questions asked. Below the counter he deals in green card marriages and weapons. Both men lead dangerous lives. To blow off steam they meet every Sunday night at Roxy's for a casual hook up, only to find that their lives are far more intertwined than they possibly could've imagined.
You Can't Let Your Guard Down
Ian broke up with Ned weeks ago but to his annoyance he keeps showing up at his doorstep, begging for Ian to give him another chance. Fed up, Ian finds himself a bodyguard in the shape of Mickey Milkovich, hired around the clock to protect him. Neither of them realizes how their lives are forever changed by that one decision.
The Devon Creature
It storms when Ian boards the ship that is supposed to sail him out and away from his hometown in Devon, England in 1852. As the ship sinks to the depths of the ocean, and the crew drowns around him, the Merfolk come out to scavenge for the goods they carried on board. It's then Ian looks into cold blue eyes and pleads for his life.

I might never finish these but boy do I love them! I started writing them a year ago, December 2021, and have rough drafts of all four but actually perfecting and finishing them?! Impossible! If I could just get a few years off from literally every other task ever, I'd be perfectly happy spending every waking hour working on them!

Throwing this out there cuz my brain is too full of weasels to do anything else with it
I was scrolling through my Drafts to set up the next sequence in my Queue and seeing two posts next to each got me thinking:
Imogen and Laudna as Root and Shaw in a Person of Interest AU.
I think it works best with Imogen as Root and Laudna as Shaw, though I did have a moment where I considered it flipped the other way around.
I think then that the rest of the crew works out to be Orym as John, FCG as Bear, Chetney as Harold, Fearne as Elias, and Ashton as Fusco. Though I suppose Eshteross would make a better Harold, but then I don't know what to do with Chetney. Actually... it would kinda be funny to have Chetney as Martine, but I wouldn't want to have him squarely on the opposing team from the rest of Bell's Hells. I know Elias has danced back and forth between ally and antagonist, but I think that kinda works for Fearne, being the chaos muppet that she is. Maybe Otohan would be Martine. Or Control.
Anyhoo, I hadn't really given it a ton of thought beyond Imodna as Shoot, but I figured I'd write this out to see what folks thought.

HI i’m back like after a....year?

everyone always talks about the yellow wallpaper or some other sort of fucked up short story as one they were forced to read in school and vividly remember but for me i literally can’t get this other one out of my head
it was about a young woman who lived with her mom, and her sister was visiting. she talks about the juxtaposition of who her sis was when they were younger, how she was constantly pushing their culture and heritage away and wanting to go live in the city and have nothing to do with them but then when she visits as an adult she’s wearing like. these fancy clothes that DO come from their culture but obviously more Fashion about it, and she’s talking about how much she’s Learned Better about their heritage from ppl in the city
and the thing that stuck out was how she was INSISTENT that this quilt the narrator+mom had shouldn’t have had it. that it shouldn’t have been “mistreated” the way they were (just by fucking using it) and it shoulda been in a museum???
and it didn’t get framed in like a mean way! the narrator wasn’t like a jerk about it to her, but it was so interesting cause when her sis left she was just like “well. that certainly happened.” and then goes right back to Life lol

Writing update
Okay so I literally haven’t posted in a year, but I wrote my first draft in December 2021. I am now working on editing.
I read the first draft when I finished it and I was so happy with the results. I left it to marinate and then came back to it 5 months later and it is shit. Holy fuck it is so awful. That’s the thing about writing, though. It’s supposed to be awful so you can improve. Anyways, I’ve got a set schedule to work on my editing. If anyone has any editing tips, that would be spectacular.
I am also thinking of sending off the first draft to a professional to edit it. I think it will be free as they just need works to put on their resume.
I am filming my editing process and uploading it to tiktok as well.

Fairy Tale of New York?
Fairytale of New York, my beloved! It's this year's holiday fic! A few years back, in 2019 I think, I participated in this event called the Holiday Movie Challenge run by heamarvel (they don't do any more events and this makes me sad) where you created fandom content inspired by generic Hallmark movie prompts (this is also where A King for Christmas came from). And one of the prompts was something like "Character A abruptly becomes the guardian for their niece and nephew right before the holidays. With the help of their Christmas-loving neighbor, Character B, they learn to find love and the Christmas spirit." I really wanted to write the prompt but didn't have the time since I was already working on Once Upon a Wintertime and Brewed Awakening, so I adapted the prompt for a Stuckony storyline, made a moodboard, and set it aside to work on a full fic for 2020. Except then AKFC took off and I was busy working on that for 2020 and then people were really interested in Home for the Holidays, so I worked on that for 2021, and it's only just now that I got back to Fairytale of New York.
It's a Stuckony fic, which makes it the first Stuckony long fic I've written in two years (how I've missed my three boys), and it features celebrity author and talk show host Bucky, Steve and Tony being super affectionate and cuddly literally all the time, Iron Pom my other beloved, plus Kate and Harley as Bucky's niece and nephew. I'm super excited to start posting it in December. I just wrapped up writing Chapter 12 yesterday, which puts me at about halfway written and on track to be finished with the draft in ~September.

15th December
It’s not a big day, really. But, buried deep in the files saved to my cloud storage, there is one document that was created on the 15th December 2020. That document is titled: “HPHM Adaptation - plan.”
All my life, I’ve loved stories. Reading them, daydreaming about them, writing them. And all my life, I’ve struggled to finish them. Around 20 months ago, I (and the rest of the world for that matter) suddenly ended up with a lot more free time, and my forever-overthinking self needed to fill that time. So I got very into cleaning the house, learnt more about Tudor history than I will ever need to know, figured out how to play Taylor Swift tunes on the ukulele, started an online creative writing course, and opened up a mobile game I had played for about two months when it first came out, then got bored.
I was getting back into writing, but wanted to write something other than short scenes, and I was struggling to piece together a plot, and that was when I read an article about aspiring writers developing their skills through fanfiction. I looked at that mobile game and its plot that was intriguing but never seemed to live up to expectations, and decided that this was what I’d do. I’d adapt the plot and write until I felt comfortable in my style and skills, and then I’d move on. So that’s what I set out to do.
But then, along came Artemis Hexley, and she had other ideas.
On the 15th December, I mapped out the four years that I had played in-game, listed the side-quests and started linking them to plot points where they might fit, either without taking away from the plot, or even adding to it. On the 16th December, I planned out the first “book” in the series. A week or two later, I’d finished it. It wasn’t good, but I’d finished it. Two weeks after that, I’d done the same with the second. By the start of March, I’d written first drafts of the first four “books” of what I’d started to call “the saga”.
I had also, in that time, become confident in my skills, my style, and my books. The first two were admittedly a bit crap, but by the middle of the third book, I was starting to actually enjoy reading my writing. Not only that, but Artemis had developed, too. She’d become a character that constantly seemed to niggle at my consciousness, and who I had grown rather fond of.
I read back over the fourth “book” and thought that I was proud of it, and of Artemis. I’d achieved what I wanted to, but neither I wasn’t ready to let go of Artemis or her story. Or, maybe she wasn’t ready to let go of me. So, instead, I decided to not only carry the Saga on, but to share it as well.
By the 31st March 2021, I had almost completely rewritten what is now ‘Artemis Hexley and the Mystery at Hogwarts’. I then did the scariest thing I’ve ever done, and published the entire thing on AO3, set up a tumblr account, and shared a link to it on my blog. It was a shout into the abyss, but - amazingly - people heard. And people read. And I wrote. And wrote. And wrote.
Now, I have over 200,000 words of the Saga published on three platforms with more saved in the documents, a 63-chapter-long collaborative AU novel, a novella about Charlie Weasley, and several short stories, novellas and novels either written or planned. And that’s just about Artemis. I have other characters, too, now.
But, when all is said and done, this isn’t about them. Not today. Today is for Artemis, the one who started it all, who made me realise that I could actually write, and keep on writing, simply by being the tenacious little gremlin-child she is.
Of course, she’s not the only one who has kept me going. I didn’t think in a million years when I posted on this tiny little blog in a small corner of the internet that in just a few months’ time, I’d have met and been encouraged by so many amazing people.
So, to @gaygryffindorgal, the first person ever to follow my blog and comment on my writing, to @hogwartsmysteryho whose fangirling has literally stopped me from giving up on so many bad days, to @ag907 @hphmmatthewluther @amerrymystery @madelineorionswan @toads-in-my-pockets @official-weasley @ridersinpandoria @theguythatdraws @imma-too-many-fandoms and @thatravenpuffwitch who have all taken Artemis into their hearts and followed her story both loudly and quietly, to @kathrynalicemc who invited me to write for her story, to @slytherindisaster @anthamariemayfair and @that-scouse-wizard who became invested in the Rockstar AU, to my newest pal @charlieweasleysimp, and to the Wine Club @kc-and-co @whatwouldvalerydo @samshogwarts and especially my bestie @lifeofkaze (last but anything but least - what would I do without you?!) who act as terrible influences, are true friends, and who keep me semi-sane on a daily basis… Thank you. 2021 Reading Wrap-Up
Now that my spreadsheet is finally caught up through the month of December, Now that we're a month into the new year, I thought I'd summarize some stats from the prior year. I meant to have this done sooner, but I closed on my house right at the end of December and moved in January. And then I felt self-conscious about posting it late until I remembered literally the only person I'm posting this for is myself. So this poor thing has been languishing in my drafts for a month.
This is probably going to be horrific. I'd tell you to brace yourselves, but I was barely able to brace my own self. Let's just approach this on shaky legs together, shall we? 😄
Traditionally Published Books
I only managed to read 18 books this year, and literally all of them were read in Jan/Feb/March. After that, I buried myself in fanfiction.
I'm going to be honest with you, 15 of those books were romance novels in a Victoria Alexander series because 1) Bridgerton reminded me how much fun historical romance novels are, and 2) because it had been a solid decade since I'd read them.
The other three books were Naomi Novik's Spinning Silver (a reread because I just love the story), Kristin Hannah's The Four Winds (definitely the longest book I read this year), and Martha Hall Kelly's Lilac Girls. Truthfully, those last two completely shattered me. Upon reflection, that's probably part of the reason why I read fanfic the rest of the year. My goal for 2022 is to read at least 12 traditionally published books.
Completed Fics
In 2021 I read a whopping total of 616 completed fics, for a total word count of 7,013,068 words.
The longest completed fic I read in 2021 was Part 9 in @deadcatwithaflamethrower's absolutely phenomenal series Of a Linear Circle, titled Serpent in the Grass, clocking in at 448.8k words.
The shortest completed fic I read in 2021 was Bottom from 100 Fantasies From the Charma Sutra by @willhavetheirtrinkets at just 175 words.
PAIRINGS
All of my fics read were in the HP fandom. The vast majority (440 fics, or 71%) were exclusively Draco/Hermione.
Of the remaining fics I read, 105 included Hermione in the main pairing (Hermione paired with one character; Hermione in two separate pairings; Hermione in a threesome/moresome pairing; and one fuck or die fic pairing our girl with all the people).
The final remaining 71 fics included a smattering of drarry, panville, parkweasel, hansy, ronsy, blinny, nottgood, and nottpott. And a sprinkling of canon pairings (Remus/Tonks; Bill/Fleur; Lucius/Narcissa). And last but not least, I read a handful of truly rare pairs such as: Pansy/Sirius; Blaise/Lavender; Ginny/Greg; Narcissa/James; Theo/Oliver; Gabrielle/Ron; Sinistra/Hooch; Blaise/Dean; Charlie/Narcissa; Ginny/Pansy; Fleur/Angelina; and Anthony/Daphne. My goal is to be even more diverse in 2022. Who knows, I might even get crazy and branch into another fandom (probably not, who am I trying to kid?).
WIPs
At the end of the year I was following 14 WIPs. I started all 14 of these during 2021, so I'm including all of them in my total word count for the year. Total word count on WIPs rounds to 822,800 words. Obviously, this number is mostly due to Measure of a Man (which crossed 500k in December). Sorry, not sorry, @inadaze22. This is my :hehe_dog: moment.
And with that said, my total 2021 word count rounds to 7,836,000 words. And that's on escapism, baby. I am excited nervous to see what this year brings. 💛
