#i bought some storage shelves and then a bookshelf

Feeling some buyers remorse for buying 2 shelves yesterday online. But it's getting eclipsed by the excitement of thinking about where I'm gonna put them and rearranging my apartment a little bit
Is this what it's like to be an adult? Lol
#speculation nation#work sucked today but in brighter moments ive just been buzzing in excitement about furniture#i bought some storage shelves and then a bookshelf#im gonna put the storage shelves at the far side of my living room & put as many of my boxes as i can fit on it#removing Box Island from the center of my living room lol#i wanna also sort thru the boxes to figure out what things would be considered permanent storage (archival things)#which would be priority placed on the storage shelves#and then figure out what boxes i would potentially want to unpack in the coming months. to keep in easier to access locations.#yes ive been living here for 2+ years and yes ive only got like half my shit unpacked. such is life.#for my new bookshelf i wanna do a little more rearranging#the cats' fancy litter box is in the little hallway leading into the bathroom#placed there bc it was the easiest to access outlet for the self cleaning litter box#but it's chunky and gets in the way and with the non clumping litter those things are like fucking legos on the floor#crunch crunch crunch under my slippers. id like the litter box more out of the way.#so im gonna put it in the cat area of the living room. rearranging some stuff over there to make it fit.#and then where it is rn in the hallway. im gonna put my new bookshelf.#i dont know what books im gonna put on it yet. probably my less personal books. probably no manga.#im supposed to get a bookshelf from my dad sometime that's bigger than both my current and my new bookshelf#and im gonna put it in my room. clear the space behind my TV. and Theres where i wanna put out all my manga thats been in storage#idk. shelves!!! potential!!!! its all so exciting.#nothing like new furniture to make me feel like im gonna try to get my life back in order.#and Honestly having the living room suddenly so much cleaner has been... nice.#im gonna work on cleaning my room soon. it is Long overdue.

Galois Room Post!
I made Gale's room in the Sims! It took a ridiculous amount of time for such a tiny room. Overall I'm pretty happy with how it turned out-it's faithful to what I was picturing, and the places it's not can be blamed more on the limitations of the Sims 4. One thing I struggled with was the size. It's supposed to be a pretty small room, most of the living areas in Draxum's house are, but I definitely had trouble placing everything I wanted in there. Sizing it up 1x1 made it feel too big though. (Sims 5, please let us build walls on half or quarter tiles, I'm BEGGING you) In the end I couldn't fit in a real bookshelf, which was my only real gripe, but he still has plenty of space for books. (plus Draxum has so many bookshelves, he can offload some if he gets too cramped)
I wanted to have it mostly Galois but not 100% Galois. He's a teenager and wants to decorate his bedroom to the nines because that's what teenagers do, but I also wanted to keep in mind that this furniture was not bought for him and was mostly left over from its last occupant/bought when Draxum viewed Donnie as his new science slave and not his son.
Without further ado, here we go!
Tumblr media
It's...yeah, it's white. Nothing else really looked good. It was Bella's room first and Draxum didn't bother to repaint. She probably had this place papered with posters and cringey 90's wall hangings when she lived here. In retrospect pale purple walls were a trend in the 90's, but whatever it's done now.
(I also forgot to paint the walls originally so I might have just gotten used to the white)
Also just imagine the ceilings are a little lower, the wall height needed to be on medium for the rest of Draxum's house to work and due to how the Sims 4 works I couldn't give just Gale's room shorter walls. The top of the cabinet should be touching the ceiling.
Tumblr media
Other side! Gave him some nice plants, he's got some hanging ones around his bed and computer area. :) I'm not sure how I feel about the rug but I was feeling a circular rug and the colors worked. Left door is to the bathroom.
Huginn and Muninn 100% made that knitted turtle for him.
Tumblr media
Did I give him one of those fairy light canopies every movie and sitcom character had in the 2000's? Yes. Yes I did. Look, I wasn't planning on it, but I saw it in the lighting section and I had to give it to him. I know I'm terrible to him but he is my baby and I will spoil him.
Tumblr media
Better view of the bed. (the canopy kept fading from existence) Got the salt lamp and the lantern Cass gave him, I'm so happy I found those. I'm probably the least happy here, he needs more stuff on his shelves and more pictures under them. There's so many goddamn pictures in this room but HE IS A TEENAGED BOY and this is how they express themselves.
Also the clutter under the bed. In-fic that platform is actually storage space, so it works. Please enjoy how he's hiding his fashion magazines behind the pillow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His little computer corner! The Draxum family stays pretty unplugged when they're not at work, (Draxum would like them to be anyway) but Gale's allowed to have all the tech he wants in his bedroom as long as it stays in this corner.
Swing back again and-
Tumblr media
Just pretend that the vampire doll is Atomic Lass, okay?
So that bookcase thing. Is NOT a bookcase. It is a thing of evil. It drove me absolutely nuts because I wanted to fill those shelves in with clutter. Those are not snap points. But the bookcase has snap points. So I couldn't alt-move stuff there or use 9-0 keys because they'd just snap to the bottom there. So now they just look empty and stupid while he has books on the floor.
But other than that, I like this corner. He's got some binders for schoolwork in the cubby there, got some artsy stuff for relaxing and his box of vinyl records with no record player. (Draxum probably has a record player somewhere) It looks like how an actual teenager would organize his shit. I'm not sure how I feel about him leaving a stack of books on the floor, but overall Gale is a very good book owner so I'm sure he's careful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He doesn't get a window so I gave him a nice picture with curtains so he can pretend.
On a side note, I absolutely fucking hate the curtains in this game, that was the only set that looked good and didn't cover up the whole damn picture AND THEY DIDN'T COME IN PURPLE. Really, there's such a lack of purple in this room. Blame the color swatches, because I tried. God I miss Create-A-Style.
Again, please use your imagination and imagine the bulletin board filled with pictures of him with Cass or Pax and loving notes from the goyles. There's also a watch on his dresser-before he recreated his tech gauntlet, Draxum gave him a really nice watch to wear. He doesn't wear it anymore because having his gauntlet on hand is a major source of comfort, but he still loves the watch. I also realize this looks more like a girl's bedroom, but to be fair Donnie is very gender and Galois inherited that from him.
(I was SO tempted to put that box of kleenex behind his computer)
Tumblr media
Close-up of the clutter in his corner. I know Donnie's canonically not into geology, but this game really wants you to use rocks as decor. Also purple.
I don't know what that orb thing is supposed to be. Maybe like a mini version of the orb Draxum was looking into during the Goyles episode? That sounds like something a Yokai teenager would have in their room.
I wanted to give him a stereo too but my game glitched out and wouldn't place any, so I put a mixtape there in honor of that. We'll say Cass made it for him.
I did make his bathroom too, but it's not the most interesting because
Tumblr media
Yeah, pretty small.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
God, doors in this game look so silly when they're up against a wall.
It was looking way too white so I gave him the fishies and the plants for a splash of green. That sink is also SO not the style I was going for but everything else was clashing with the other counter. We can say this bathroom was remodeled at some point when vessel sinks were in fashion. I don't know why because no one was living here when they were. (Huginn and Muninn probably did it as a weekend project just for fun) I feel like he needs a rug and a big piece of art on the opposite wall, now that I'm looking at it.
I definitely went overboard with the bathroom clutter. I was just very excited that I was able to squeeze in a whole counter just for decoration. Seriously, I just wanted to add in that eyebrow pencil so he could draw on his eyebrows, then that evolved into the blush palette and the makeup brushes and the lotions and the nail stuff. He doesn't even fucking wear blush.
He did make his electric toothbrush, though Draxum makes him keep a backup because he's skeptical about how that works.
And that's the build! I'm also building the rest of Draxum's house, but it's taking a while due to the absolute utter ridiculousness of the layout. (I mean, it's my own fault, I'm the one that chose this layout)(and also because I need to use the curved wall tool for his mushroom house, and by god curved walls are impossible to work with) Decorating should be quicker though, the only place with this level of detail should be the lab and maybe the greenery. I'll probably revise his room a little, maybe paint his walls an actual color. I also want to do something more with the cactus he has on his counter. Maybe I'll download some more CC so I can give him purple curtains.
I also have no idea if this is actually playable. Probably not, I feel like a Sim wouldn't be able to figure out the platform bed thing. But whatever, I didn't make this to actually play in.

sorry if this is a weird question but what is your bookshelf/book storage set-up?
Omg I wish I could give you a good answer because I love it but like 80% of my collection is in storage rn bc I am in a tiny student accommodation studio. But. I will tell you how I did it at my old place!
Basically I had a big full bookshelf that held all my classics, my fiction, and my nostalgic favourites like the YA series I was obsessed with and stuff. Then I had a smaller bookshelf with all my ancient history and classics (and some other history) books including my uni textbooks, etc. It was pretty full though so I was definitely in need of a new shelf.
I'll attach a picture of it at my old old place because I miss it 🥺 This was just before we moved into my last place. The boxes in the picture were some of my fiction/ya fiction from memory.
Tumblr media
And then I had another shelf (you can see the side of it to the right in the above pic) with all of my poetry, nonfiction, and books I was planning to read soon.
Currently I only have my poetry books, a few favourite novels I like to reread, and whatever books I've bought since I moved into this place. I am counting down until I can move somewhere and take my books and shelves out of storage.

Hmmmm for the ask game, I’m going to assume that you have a personal library, like more than just a bookshelf. You seem like the type of person who loves to read in general.
Yeah you're right. I have three physical bookshelves: two full sized bookcases for my books and a divided shelf for my comics. Unfortunately it's still all packed up right now, but here's what it looked like before I stuck all of my stuff in storage!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you want a close-up of what's on my shelves and a small overview of some of the shelf standouts btw, you can find those pictures here.
And my comic shelf, which I'm going to have to rearrange once I move/unpack since I've bought several new trades since last May:
Tumblr media
And then, of course, the books and comics I have on my Kindle (which looks like a lot more than it is because Amazon folding Comixology into its Kindle platform has royally sucked):
Tumblr media
So....yeah, you could say I have quite a few books, lol. Frankly the only reason I don't have more is because I keep moving every year right now tbh.
anonymously make an assumption about me and i'll confirm/deny it

my room is currently a mess. to quote the ever elusive frank ocean, a tornado flew around my room before you came, excuse the mess it made. i finally bought a new dresser so that some progress can be done in organizing my room and making it look presentable to actual human beings... more than half a year after moving in.
i hoard things. i hoard clothes, i hoard supplies, i hoard little trinkets, i hoard little knick knacks that i think i might need in the far future, i hoard anything and everything with the belief that it's there for some rhyme or reason. logically, i know i don't need all this stuff - and my god, i have so much stuff - but when the moment comes for me to just toss it out years after clutching onto whatever it is, i find an excuse to slip it back into its spot. it also doesn't help that my self-diagnosed adhd-riddled brain needs to see everything out in order for me to remember and know i actually have said item. if it's hidden, it's pretty and neat and peaceful... but it's gone and out of my head. if it's out in the open, it's ugly and messy and chaotic... but at least i know it's there.
i'm hoping the new dresser and bookshelf (to use in place of desk legs) will somehow invigorate a rush of springwinter cleaning in me.
to-do list regarding the desk and dresser:
move unnecessary storage units to the side (or outside my room) in order to have room to make The Furniture™
make the damn Furniture™
undo all cable management under the desk that will get in the way of bookshelf that will act as the support
redo all cable management once the bookshelf is in place
move all clothes from middle shelves of closet into dresser
move the shit from the tall rack i'm going to throw out into the middle shelves of closet
move albums from existing bookcase into top of closet
move stray books into bookcase
be upset that i have to double line my books in the bookcase
organize miscellaneous into new bookshelf
STOP HOARDING IF YOU CAN

Buck's Loft - Part Three
This is the third post in a series of three about Buck's apartment on 9-1-1.
Part one is here and part two is here | Eddie’s house
Before we head upstairs, the downstairs bathroom. Which, despite only being visible in little slivers in the background of various scenes, plus the single shot of Buck putting on his bulletproof vest in 4.14, I am pretty confident in the relative accuracy of this room. The light fixture is close enough, and I guessed a bit on the art over the toilet. I’m pretty sure it’s a black and white architectural photo?
Tumblr media
But otherwise, I found the exact vanity they bought from Lowe’s and used for this set, so I know that’s accurate. And, I found the exact stock images they used for the art hanging above the towel bar. They’re sort of graffiti collage art of men. One riding a penny-farthing bicycle and one in the rain with an umbrella.
Architectural features include the textured glass door, and I left the bit of column poking through to the inside of the bathroom, because I thought it was interesting. Then, later, when I found apartment tours of the Rowan, that is indeed how the bathrooms generally are, so I felt vindicated in my decision. Also, the black steel post right outside the door is, I’m pretty sure, just decorative and doesn’t have any structural function.
Tumblr media
And now, the upstairs. The loft is accessed via the large open riser stairs at the center of the apartment and is supported by steel beams. The floor seems to be concrete and continues into the bathroom.
For the upstairs bathroom, I just made it an exact copy of the downstairs bathroom but flipped to accommodate the door being on the opposite side. And again, the tours of the Rowan confirmed that was the correct choice on my part. Although, in reality, I would bet money that on the set, this bathroom is not actually built out and that door leads to an empty void.
Tumblr media
And now! Buck’s bedroom! It’s a pretty large space. He definitely has room for a king size bed, but his mattress is actually a queen that rests on a low platform style bed frame. He’s got three matching night tables with lamps, two on either side of the bed, and one over in the corner between the closet and bathroom. They’re sort of rustic boxes with storage cubes in them as drawers. His duvet is white with gray pinstripe and gray sheets, and there's a cream and gray striped rug under the bed.
Tumblr media
The bookshelf next to the bed is custom made to match the balcony railing, and all the Rowan apartments I’ve seen have these too. On said shelves are the only two “family photos” in Buck’s apartment. One is a boy in a little league outfit and one is a golden retriever. They’ve both been there since 3.01. I found the actual stock image of the boy they used.
Also on these shelves are more storage cubes, a fancy lidded box thing, some other bits and bobs and several books. Two of which I think are Good Will Hunting and something by Hemingway.
Also of note, the two highest windows, directly behind the head of the bed, are textured privacy glass in the set version. I carried that through the other windows at the same height in the rest of the loft.
Tumblr media
On the other side of the room we have the closet, a seating area, and some art. The closet is two outswing louvered doors. And there’s a chair made of wood slats tucked in the corner with the other side table I mentioned before. Above this are two art prints. I also managed to find the actual stock art that was used for these as well. One is a fifties style businessman slumped over with a briefcase and a windup key sticking out of his back. The other is colorful squares with a television in the center that has a shot from the 50’s television series Lassie on the screen. As far as what the set dressers are trying to imply about Buck’s character with these choices, your guess is as good as mine.
Tumblr media
The other corner between the closet and the balcony door has yet to be seen, so I have no idea what’s over there.
Lastly, it doesn’t appear until season 5, but there’s a console table with a television in the middle of the room, for Buck to watch from bed. I thought Eddie’s careless TV table choices were bad, but this is really asking for a broken flat screen.
I think they only put it there when Buck needs to do TV things in his bed, because it’s not visible any other time ever.
Tumblr media
Last but not least! The balconies! As I said before, there’s one outside the bedroom and obviously the big one outside the main level.
As far as how they’re furnished, the set dressers seem to mostly care that there’s just something visible through the doors in whatever shot they’re doing. So, there’s not a lot of logic to the placement of things.
Tumblr media
For the model, I went with where things are for the 5a balcony scene, which is actually the least sensible way they’ve ever furnished it, but whatever.
Most often, the grill and a set of two chairs and and side table are what’s visible in the background of scenes. For my model, I put those chairs and table up on the bedroom balcony. Which, usually, all that’s visible up there are two palm plants, but in s3 there’s an umbrella up there that's visible behind Eddie in the above picset at top right.
The bright red patio table and umbrella set is usually visible through the kitchen window, but sometimes they just fill that space with plants.
Also, I’m in a fight with the set people for the drab exterior they gave the set. RIP to them, but I’m different and will live my life pretending it has the lovely beaux arts exterior it deserves.
Tumblr media
Now, as promised in Part 1, where is Buck’s loft in relation to the Diaz house? Since they’ve said Eddie’s address on the show, it’s easy to map it. I used the closest corner of the Historic Core and the furthest corner to cover all potential drive times depending on where in that rectangle Buck actually lives. As you can see below, going from Buck’s to Eddie’s is about half the drive time at this time of day, 13-17 minutes vs 25-39 minutes.
The below maps show traffic data for roughly 3:45pm LA time, which is just heading into rush hour. I checked, and in the thick of rush hour, around the 5pm hour, the estimated drive time is 35 minutes to a full 1hr10min. The morning commute flips this, and going from Eddie’s to Buck’s is the faster route then, with nearly identical projected drive times.
Tumblr media
And that’s everything, I guess! Thank you for scrolling this far. I hope at least some of it was interesting or helpful or entertaining, etc. If for whatever reason you want some specific shots of this model (or Eddie’s) that I didn’t include, feel free to ask me. I can put a camera pretty much anywhere in the 3d environment.
Thank you again!
Part one is here and part two is here.
And here is a similar tour of Eddie's house.

Angst/Fluff/Angst: 3,846 words
A/N: Okay, I told you guys that I would be alternating between DTLW and Clearwater Springs, so here’s the proof. Anyway, two more parts after this!
Tumblr media
Your fourth home in five years is what they told you this was. But you couldn’t remember any but this one.
So your heart was aching, and you always wanted to cry, but you never dared to do so. Something, someone’s, words, telling you that crying in front of strangers was dangerous kept echoing in your head. So you blinked away any tears that came, hugged your stuffed animal, and studied the area you would lived in.
It was a little cold, so you hugged your coat tighter to you. You’d been told by the other fairies that your coat was special, because it appeared to be designed exactly for your wings, which was rare. But none of them seemed to have any idea why you would have such a special coat, excepting the fact that maybe in the country you came from it was more normalized to have custom wing-slits.
It was completely normal to come away from a home with a stuffed animal, and clothing and jewelry that could shrink down. People liked dressing up fairies.
You played with your bracelet as you examined the cement floor, and the plain white walls, and the windows that weren’t quiet fully insulated but were full east and full west, respectively, and provided quite a bit of natural lighting. You had your own bathroom and kitchen area, and the laundry room was in the basement. The bed was a bit creaky, but the mattress seemed decent. You had a cute lamp on the side table, and they had a few books for you on a bookshelf that had the bottom shelf broken beside the side table.
There was shoebox bedroom on one of the shelves as well, very simple, with just a bed in it, but it was decorated carefully—though perhaps by their daughter. There was felt covering the floor and back wall, which would provide a little insulation for you. The outside was colored on, but you didn’t have a problem with that.
There was an old rug rolled off to one side that they said you could use, and a bar with some hangers already hanging on it and plastic drawers they said you could used for your clothing.
You looked at your suitcase, which was resting on the bed, then set your dog on top of it while you got the rug, unrolling it and placing it near your bed.
Your job there was to do their laundry and take care of the cat that their daughter wouldn’t let them get rid of, and to entertain their daughter now and then, and when you weren’t delivering the clean laundry or entertaining their daughter you were to stay in the basement bedroom. Simple enough.
The cat was a sweetheart and the laundry was quite simple with only three people to wash for. Laundry was tossed down the shoot daily and every Monday and Thursday you were to deliver their clean laundry before they awoke.
They weren’t cruel, or strict, just very structured and busy.
She was very kind and brought you groceries, even getting you exactly what you requested. You just had to leave a list with her laundry on Mondays, because Mondays were grocery days. She even spontaneously bought you a cake, and when you told her that the basement was a little cold for you, she found a nice heater for you that greatly improved things, and found some more blankets around the house for you. They were generally gone over the weekends, visiting a different set of grandparents each weekend, which left you and Cupcake, the cat, alone in the house to do as you pleased.
Those were the days you ventured down to the fairy market, which was a safe space for fairies and since you did get an allowance for doing the laundry, you could sometimes buy some special treats or things that you needed.
You weren’t a fan of the husband, which was fine, because he only seemed to come downstairs if he needed to check the water-heater (they were having issues with it and he was too stubborn to call whoever it was that professionally dealt with those things), or to ask you to do an emergency clean on a shirt or tie or slacks. It wasn’t that he was mean, or sleazy, or that he gave you bad vibes, he was just very grumpy and brisk. Cold.
And he hated the cat.
Plus you had the distinct feeling that if he found out about your diamond tears it would be a very bad thing. He was a greedy man, raising a greedy daughter.
But you had a CD player now, and you could find CD’s now and then at the fairy market, and the wife said you could use any CD’s you found in the basement.
Which was how you found your current favorite CD. You weren’t certain who the artists were because the disc hadn’t been in it’s proper case, but their songs were so nice. And you loved the one song.
So some days, when you had nothing to do but give the cat all the love it wanted, you just listened to that CD on repeat, singing words as though you’d known them before.
You did different crafts, and solved some of the abandoned puzzles from the storage room.
You improved your shoe-box, replacing the bed (it was a sponge, hard and weird to lay on) with a carefully arranged nest of fabrics and stuffing. Sometimes you stuck your stuffed dog into the shoebox and snuggled into that. The smells on it so familiar and foreign that it made you cry.
Which meant you had to find a place to hide your tears. Normally you just saved them and exchanged them at the fairy market—where the currency exchange fairy, Heidrun, just discretely nodded and added their value to your shopping card balance.
But one day she stopped you before you could leave, holding your hands. “You don’t look well, dear.”
“Fourth home,” You told her simply, shrugging. “It’s more of a job than a home. But I’m not…I’m not suffering. She always makes sure I have what I need and allows me a lot of freedom. I have the whole basement to myself, and I’m allowed in the side-yard at all times. She even encourages me to come here. And I have music to listen to. Actually, I found a CD I really like, but I don’t know what band they are because it doesn’t say on the disc.”
“Try Magnus, he knows everything going on in the music scene,” She told you, squeezing your hands. “And trying to hold onto whatever love you’ve got and are getting. It’s not healthy for our kind to go unloved.”
You nodded. “I’ll do that.”
Magnus did help you, granted, you had to sing a couple of the songs for him to find the right group, but once he did, he sent to you over to Frida with a request for BTS albums.
Frida nodded, pulling out several book-like things. “They’re super popular, but they’re also in a ton a magazines right now. They lost their fairy because of some scandal, and now they’re in a slump, but they’re also going on a world tour, so it can’t be that much of a slump. They’re actually coming to our stadium for a concert, which is cool. They’ve started putting up the posters already.”
You looked at the books, confused. “I thought you said they were albums?”
“They are. The CD’s are accompanied by a booklet of photos and the lyrics, photocards, and usually a poster.”
You blinked then picked up the biggest one, concerned and confused. “It’s…huge…and a box?”
She just snorted. “You want that one? It’s one of their more recent ones. Don’t have their newest yet, but I can see if I can get one for you.”
You nodded. “That’d be nice, but sure, I’ll…take this one for now.”
She nodded and swiped your card. “All yours, sweet-cheeks. Now, tell me how you get your hair that shiny.”
You grabbed your hair and shrugged. “I don’t know. I just wash it.”
“Not even fair,” She muttered, then turned to a new customer.
You went home after hitting a few more stalls, getting more craft things and some stuff for the kitty, hugging the album and wondering what awaited you inside.
Cupcake was waiting for you on your bed, sitting up and meowing loudly, stretching out a paw for you to take (which you did because why else teach him that trick) and then purring and arching into your hand.
“I know, I was gone for forever,” You scooped him up after successfully setting everything else down. “I bought some new music for us. You need a better name. A masculine name. You don’t respond to Cupcake anyway—not that I blame you. It’s a rather poor choice of a name for a cat, much less a tom.”
He just purred, climbing up onto your shoulders and riding there while you put away the few food items you had purchased and hopping onto the fridge while you started cooking your dinner.
You hummed as you tried to think of a different name for him, but after a moment you paused, wondering what song it was you were humming and why it was so familiar and yet so distant. So easy, but you couldn’t remember. You couldn’t remember the moment you stopped singing what the words were or how the song went, despite having reached the chorus. You could only remember the last words you sang.
You shook your head and went over, quickly opening the box to where the disc was in the album without seeing any sign of the pictures (Maybe a poster?) and then popping it into the player.
But it was worse than the first one, because you swore you knew each song. You had vague images in your head of people performing the songs. It hurt. It hurt to hear these songs because they were too familiar. Too familiar and yet so completely foreign that it was unfair.
The first one wasn’t too bad, but the second started really getting to you.
By the third song you were in tears.
By the chorus of the fourth song you were full-on sobbing on the bed.
The fifth song clashed so much with the sentiments of the previous two that it just broke you down further, and you had to turn it off before you started screaming at the empty space where the music should have come from.
You grabbed the photos from the album box after you had calmed down enough. Not bothering to try and remove the sticker, you slide the photos out and started flipping through the pages, horrified at the fact that they looked so achingly familiar and yet you had no idea who they were.
You tossed them back in the box and slammed it shut, eyes filled with tears.
But you must not have woken when someone came into the basement, because three days later the man was demanding to know where you got so many diamonds.
And fairies can’t lie.
Five days later you were staring out the window, a place you couldn’t go until you filled the box on your small counter space with diamonds. It wasn’t too large, but it was large enough that you were worried about whether you would ever fill it.
So you turned on the disc again, and cried. Cried until you were sick, and then collapsed into your bed. Exhaustedly petting the cat until you fell asleep, only to repeat it the next day. And the next.
When you finally filled it, you went straight to the market just to get some time away from the basement.
The shopkeepers from your regular stops came rushing up when they saw you, even Heidrun, all asking where you’d been and if you were okay and before you knew it you were sitting at one of the picnic tables with some soup and some tea and a bunch of worried fairies fussing over you.
Frida sat silently across from you, looking concerned but ultimately staring at the table.
Or so you thought, because she suddenly reached across the table and grabbed your bracelet. “Where did you get this?”
You blinked and tried to recoil, but couldn’t. “I don’t remember. I just figured it was from one of my previous homes.
Magnus frowned, looking at it. “It looks a lot like the one that…”
She nodded. “There’s something etched onto them. Fairy craftsmanship. Come over to my shop. Come on.”
You followed her, curious, and not wanting to let something you had a very strong attachment to out of your sight.
First she tried a jeweler’s eye loupe, then she wrinkled her nose and grabbed a flashlight, shining it through the gems and onto the table.
You stared down at it, confused.
“Something tells me your family didn’t give you up willingly,” Magnus said, voice a little tense.
Frida looked at you, as though she couldn’t believe it. “You’re the fairy that was taken away from BTS?”
You just looked back at her. “Um…is that what all of that means?”
“How did you like that album you bought?” She asked, eyes narrowed to slits.
You shifted uncomfortably, not wanting to think about how much you had used it to make yourself cry, because if you did then you knew she was right. And if she was right, then it would be even sadder.
“Weren’t the one that said that they couldn’t have been too sad about losing their fairy to be going on a world tour? Why would I want to be her?”
“No, they talked about it…it’s because they’re trying to find her. Find you. They didn’t say it explicitly because they could get in trouble for that, but they’ve hinted at it and there are tons of reports and pictures of them visiting every fairy sanctuary they could without compromising their performances. It just took a while for it to hit the news for us. Y/n, they’re looking for you. And if this is any proof, I think they love you and you need love. You look like a skeleton with skin.”
Heidrun gently pulled you into her arms. “What changed? You were doing alright and then you were gone and you come back looking like a ghost.”
“They found my tears,” You whispered.
She inhaled sharply, not quite a gasp, and held you tighter. “You can’t stay there.”
“I can’t leave there either. Where would I go? I would just get arrested and brought back to them.”
Frida folded her arms. “Leave it to me. You go back, lay low. Maybe try to appeal to the lady of the house. I’ll have you out of there as soon as I can. In the meantime….”
“I’ve still got a backlog of your diamonds, come get them just in case he asks again.” Your arm was gently pulled toward the currency exchange station.
You took the bag, and the treats most of them packed up for you. If the love of other fairies was enough to sustain you, you never would have been in this mess. But fairies, while kind and caring, didn’t have enough love for other fairies to keep them alive, especially once exposed to the love of a family. Fairies were good, and kind, and helpful, but also emotionally unstable which made it hard to focus enough love into one another without a consistent source of outside love.
It was a miracle your species had survived as long as it had.
Cupcake greeted you, meowing pathetically and hopping into your arms.
You sat down on your bed with him. “Let’s think of a new name for you.”
Eventually you settled on Keyowo, which was close to his current name but meant friend and was just…it was better.
You then set to deep cleaning over the next week, shrinking your things and tucking them into your suitcase to keep them out of sight.
On Tuesday he beat you to tears because you weren’t producing tears fast enough.
The album caught your eye again on the next Friday.
You picked up, tracing the seven on the cover, and then opening it. You pulled out the poster and unfolded it.
They were in white, with feathers floating down and a hole in the floor. They all looked so good.
You touched the one on the far left, wearing the sweater. Slightly cat-like facial features. You felt like you knew what his hands looked like, even though you couldn’t see much of them in the picture. Slightly calloused, bony, but gentle and careful. Caring for everyone.
“Yoongi,” You whispered, choking up. Tearing up.
Your fingers traced over each of them, names a whisper in your mind. A whisper that turned into shouts, memories flooding your mind of each and every one of them. Your mind screaming for them because your throat was too tight to even whisper.
They were your boys.
They had to let you go.
You weren’t supposed to remember them.
They weren’t supposed to try and find you.
The next day you shoved everything into your bag, tucked the cat into your coat, left a note for the missus and headed straight back to the fairy market.
Frida looked surprised when she saw you. “Whoa, what happened? Is this the kitty your were telling me about?”
“They’re gone for the weekend, that means even if I stay nearby they’ll think I’ve had two days to run out on them. I need you to help me get me back to my family.” You teared up. “I need to find them.”
Frida nodded, glancing around and closing her shop. “Come on. You can stay with me.”
Frida’s family consisted of a pair of siblings.
The sister, Alena, was a fairy rights activist in her spare time, which is why Frida had so much freedom, and a huge music fan. She had a whole wall of CD’s and albums and posters. Stacks of magazines featuring musicians.
The brother, Agnar, was quiet, “just an accountant”, and very kind. And very affectionate toward Frida.
Frida was equally affectionate toward him, bringing a fake gag from Alena.
They helped you find an outfit that hid your fairy-ness, and he got you tickets to the concert, all of you hoping that it would get you close enough for them to see you and recognize that you were there. Also, it would help you health-wise to see them in person and the rush from the concert would be overwhelming, but also might revitalize you.
Then Alena forced you to sit in the bathroom with her while she applied a cloth to your face with epsom salts to try and reduce the bruising and swelling on your face. She told you about the fairy abuse responders, and how she would call them in the morning and tell them about your family.
Agnar totally stole your cat.
Frida let you sleep in her fairy-home (because it definitely wasn’t a dollhouse and it was awesome, of course).
Four days later, you were at the concert venue with Alena, taking a seat and soaking in the atmosphere. People were talking all around and some people were chanting the boys’ names. Another group was starting to sing the songs.
You listened nervously, wondering whether it was true or not that they were looking for you. What if they were just making a fuss to get back at the company a bit? What if the media was making things up? It wouldn’t be the first time a story was fabricated for magazines.
Then the concert started and you and Alena were cheering for your boys, but you wondered why you ever thought they’d be able to see you in this mess.
It wasn’t until the second half of the concert that you had hope.
The boys were in more casual outfits, having more fun.
And they were all wearing the jewelry that Namjoon had made from your diamonds.
Jimin was the one who saw you first, though he looked right over you and then seemed to try and pinpoint you again, but was unable to in the crowd. He stood there with a smile plastered on his face, acting as though he was studying each Army’s face when you knew he was searching for you.
So you stood still in the writhing mass that of the crowd, and studied him.
He had lost weight, and if it hadn’t been for the makeup, you bet he’d look fairly wrung-out.
All of them looked like they’d been sick enough to lose weight.
Taehyung came over and practically dragged him away (making it look playful).
But Jimin said something to Jin and Jungkook.
Jungkook was over there as casually as he could, totally looking at the camera and doing ‘fanservice’. But he obviously didn’t spot you.
Jin didn’t either.
But Yoongi did during the very last song and he stopped, staring, then he was crouched, hand over his mouth, just staring in your direction.
You waved, wondering if he actually was staring at you.
He smiled, but it also looked like he wanted to cry. He waved as well, then cautiously moved off, still keeping an eye on you.
You bit your lip, smiling.
Alena squealed and grabbed onto you, and the two of you did your best to fit in with the rest of the crowd.
Both of you lingered as long as you could afterward, her extremely hyped from the whole concert and talking a mile a minute, while you were feeling…exhausted? All of the emotions around you and finally seeing your boys again….
But you had no idea how you were going to get to them, or how they were going to get to you.
Until you saw Sejin, scanning the crowd.
The likelihood of him being on the side of the boys was pretty good.
You tugged on Alena’s arm, pulling her to a stop.
Sejin locked onto you and started moving, coming your way, waiting until the straggling fans that had been around you were gone before telling security to let you through.
You dipped your head to the security guards, then bowed slightly to Sejin. “Hello.”
Sejin smiled. “Hello, y/n.”
You bit your lip. “I remembered.”
He nodded. “I figured. We all figured. They’re waiting. They’re all waiting.”
You were practically vibrating.
“Come on, let’s get you back to them. Your friend can come but she needs to wait in the hallway for…security purposes.”
You nodded and relayed the information to Alena, then both of you were following back to the waiting room.
Sejin stopped by the waiting room. “Go on in.”
You nodded, putting your hand on the doorknob and then turning it and going in.

Thinking out loud.
Long post, feel free to skip!!
Going to train-of-consciousness to myself about decorating stuff.
I really am drawing a blank with decorating ideas for my study in the new house. I'll have a 3.3m x 3.3m room to work with. It will have a 3.1m wide sliding glass door/window along the front wall, so there are three walls to work with.
I have bookshelves already... Part of me would like to get rid of the ol' flat-pack particleboard "beech" bookshelves and buy some that are better matched, but then again... I have three "beech" bookshelves. Not all the same height, but they more or less match. But then, I have a darker, actual timber bookshelf. And I'll be putting my Gran's darker timber furniture in there (not all actual timber, but still looks good!) I kinda like the idea of having matching dark timber furniture and shelves. I could stain the large pine bookshelf I have. Then I could but the "beech" ones in the spare room for storage in there, since I'm not putting in a BIR. The white melamine bookshelf we'll be able to use in out bedroom, because we'll actually have room for it, and our bedsides are white. We're also going to have some pine timber furniture in there, but the pine bookshelf is huge, so the white one will be better.
As far as wall décor for the study, there are heaps of things to choose from for hanging. Many floral prints that Gran had in her house, and a lot of historical family photographs. A bunch of boats/nautical things as well, although they could blend in quite well with my oddities, which I'm planning to display in the dining area.
Wall colour? I have no freaking idea!! Part of me likes the idea of a traditional English Manor style library/study with deep green or red walls, but I don't especially like green as a decorator colour, and I'm not sure red is really a *me* colour either. Also, given that my study is not going to be on the grand scale of an English Country Home, I'm not convinced that such a deep/dark colour can really be carried off in combination with dark-toned timbers. A burnished golden yellow might work. Yellow is said to be a creative colour, but it would really have to be the right one for me because there are some that I'm really not a fan of. I have had yellow in the kitchen/bathroom/laundry since I bought this place, though, without wanting to eat my own eyeballs, so that's a plus. My favourite colour is purple, but I don't think I want a purple study. I don't think it would fit with the furniture and the other décor I have tentatively planned.
Other décor? I'm planning to use some of my grandmother's old table linen to make curtains and possibly a cushion to put on a small bench seat, which I may try to make a little back for if I can figure it out. Particularly, I want to use the red gingham cloths for the side window and the seat. I'm not sure about the large window/sliding glass door. When I first had the idea of using the linens as curtains, I was set on a different kit, which would have had small windows for the study so I could have used the two ginghams. For larger curtains I could get larger-checked gingham, or make solid-colour curtains with gingham tie-backs.
Mmkay, recap for self...
Furniture: liquor cabinet; linen chest; tapestry seat thingy; wheeled bench seat thingy; timber bookshelf (Coogans); unsealed pine bookshelf (stained dark timber); new bookshelves from somewhere; desk from somewhere, Dad's desk chair.
Wall décor: floral prints; family photographs.
Wall colour: burnished yellow/gold?
Curtains: gingham w/ white tiebacks (small); white w/ gingham tiebacks (large).
Flooring: ?????; black & grey rug.
Flooring I'm still kinda deciding on for the house in general. Our bedroom will have second-hand carpet from Dad and Joss's, the piece from their lounge room will almost perfectly fit our room. It does have a stain on it, but we figure a rug will do to cover that. A 4.25m x 3.35m, 5-year-old carpet in good condition otherwise is a gift horse and I ain't looking in its mouth. 🤷‍♀️
The main living area being an open space, basically 6m x 7.35m, I'm debating the flooring. We could go with vinyl for the kitchen/entry and then laminate timber-look flooring for the lounge/dining area, or just laminate or vinyl the lot. Laminate is more cost effective, but much more labour-intensive. Vinyl sheeting is much quicker to lay, but costs more, albeit still not a huge amount. But also, vinyl flooring doesn't look as nice as laminate. 🤔
Spare room and study also need flooring, of course. Probably room-sized remnants from a carpet place, if the carpet we have isn't enough to Frankenstein together a room's worth. And the bathroom/laundry and powder rooms will by vinyl sheet flooring, I'm just not sure of the design yet.
Okay. After all that rambling, I have more of an idea in mind of what I want to do with my study/writing room. I have an antique inkwell/bottle as well as my nice dark, old furniture and historical photos, so I like the idea of having a traditional-looking room, even if I will be using a 2-in-1 laptop to do my writing on while I'm in there! 😅

My Homelab/Office 2020 - DFW Quarantine Edition
Tumblr media
Moved into our first home almost a year ago (October 2019), I picked out a room that had 2 closets for my media/game/office area. Since the room isn't massive, I decided to build a desk into closet #1 to save on space. Here 1 of 2 shelves was ripped off, the back area was repainted gray. A piece of card board was hung to represent my 49 inch monitor and this setup also gave an idea how high I needed the desk.
Tumblr media
On my top shelf this was the initial drop for all my Cat6 cabling in the house, I did 5 more runs after this (WAN is dropped here as well).
Tumblr media
I measured the closet and then went to Home Depot to grab a countertop. Based on the dimensions, it needed to be cut into an object shape you would see on Tetris.
Tumblr media
Getting to work, cutting the countertop.
Tumblr media
My father-in-law helped me cut it to size in the driveway and then we framed the closet, added in kitchen cabinets to the bottom (used for storage and to hide a UPS). We ran electrical sockets inside the closet. I bought and painted 2 kitchen cabinets which I use for storage under my desk as well.
Tumblr media
The holes allowed me to run cables under my desk much easier, I learned many of these techniques on Battlestations subreddit and Setup Wars on Youtube. My daughter was a good helper when it came to finding studs.
Tumblr media
Some of my cousins are networking engineers, they advised me to go with Unifi devices. Here I mounted my Unifi 16 port switch, my Unifi Security Gateway (I'll try out pfSense sometime down the line), and my HD Homerun (big antenna is in the attic). I have Cat6 drops in each room in the house, so everything runs here. On my USG, I have both a LAN #2 and a LAN #1 line running to the 2nd closet in this room (server room). This shot is before the cable management.
Tumblr media
Cable management completed in closet #1. Added an access point and connected 3 old Raspberry Pi devices I had laying around (1 for PiHole - Adblocker, 1 for Unbound - Recursive DNS server, and 1 for Privoxy - Non Caching web proxy).
Tumblr media
Rats nest of wires under my desk. I mounted an amplifier, optical DVD ROM drive, a USB hub that takes input from up to 4 computers (allows me to switch between servers in closet #2 with my USB mic, camera, keyboard, headset always functioning), and a small pull out drawer.
Tumblr media
Cable management complete, night shot with with Nanoleaf wall lights. Unifi controller is mounted under the bookshelf, allows me to keep tabs on the network. I have a tablet on each side of the door frame (apps run on there that monitor my self hosted web services). I drilled a 3 inch hole on my desk to fit a grommet wireless phone charger. All my smart lights are either running on a schedule or turn on/off via an Alexa command. All of our smart devices across the house and outside, run on its on VLAN for segmentation purposes.
Tumblr media
Quick shot with desk light off. I'm thinking in the future of doing a build that will mount to the wall (where "game over" is shown).
Tumblr media
Wooting One keyboard with custom keycaps and Swiftpoint Z mouse, plus Stream Deck (I'm going to make a gaming comeback one day!).
Tumblr media
Good wallpapers are hard to find with this resolution so pieced together my own.
Tumblr media
Speakers and books at inside corner of desk.
Tumblr media
Speakers and books at inside corner of desk.
Tumblr media
Closet #2, first look (this is in the same room but off to the other side). Ran a few CAT6 cables from closet #1, into the attic and dropped here (one on LAN #1, the other on LAN #2 for USG). Had to add electrical sockets as well.
Tumblr media
I have owned a ton of Thinkpads since my IBM days, I figured I could test hooking them all up and having them all specialize in different functions (yes, I have a Proxmox box but it's a decommissioned HP Microserver on the top shelf which is getting repurposed with TrueNAS_core). If you're wondering what OSes run on these laptops: Windows 10, Ubuntu, CentOS, AntiX. All of these units are hardwired into my managed Netgear 10gigabit switch (only my servers on the floor have 10 gigabit NICs useful to pass data between the two). Power strip is also mounted on the right side, next to another tablet used for monitoring. These laptop screens are usually turned off.
Computing inventory in image:
Lenovo Yoga Y500, Lenovo Thinkpad T420, Lenovo Thinkpad T430s, Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 12, Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 14, Lenovo Thinkpad W541 (used to self host my webservices), Lenovo S10-3T, and HP Microserver N54L
Tumblr media
Left side of closet #2
Tumblr media
**moved these Pis and unmanaged switch to outside part of closet**
Tumblr media
Since I have a bunch of Raspberry Pi 3s, I decided recently to get started with Kubernetes clusters (my time is limited but hoping to have everything going by the holidays 2020) via Rancher, headless. The next image will show the rest of the Pis but in total:
9x Raspberry Pi 3  and 2x Raspberry Pi 4
Tumblr media
2nd shot with cable management. The idea is to get K3s going, there's Blinkt installed on each Pi, lights will indicate how many pods per node. The Pis are hardwired into a switch which is on LAN #2 (USG). I might also try out Docker Swarm simultaneously on my x86/x64 laptops. Here's my compose generic template (have to re-do the configs at a later data) but gives you an idea of the type of web services I am looking to run: https://gist.github.com/antoinesylvia/3af241cbfa1179ed7806d2cc1c67bd31
20 percent of my web services today run on Docker, the other 80 percent are native installs on Linux and or Windows. Looking to get that up to 90 percent by the summer of 2021.
Basic flow to call web services:
User <--> my.domain (Cloudflare 1st level) <--> (NGINX on-prem, using Auth_Request module with 2FA to unlock backend services) <--> App <-->  DB.
If you ever need ideas for what apps to self-host: https://github.com/awesome-selfhosted/awesome-selfhosted
Tumblr media
Homelabs get hot, so I had the HVAC folks to come out and install an exhaust in the ceiling and dampers in the attic.
Tumblr media
I built my servers in the garage this past winter/spring, a little each night when my daughter allowed me to. The SLI build is actually for Parsec (think of it as a self hosted Stadia but authentication servers are still controlled by a 3rd party), I had the GPUs for years and never really used them until now.
Tumblr media
Completed image of my 2 recent builds and old build from 2011.
Retroplex (left machine) - Intel 6850 i7 (6 core, 12 thread), GTX 1080, and 96GB DDR4 RAM. Powers the gaming experience.
Metroplex (middle machine) - AMD Threadripper 1950x (16 core, 32 thread), p2000 GPU, 128GB DDR4 RAM.
HQ 2011 (right machine) - AMD Bulldozer 8150 (8 cores), generic GPU (just so it can boot), 32GB DDR3 RAM.
Tumblr media
I've been working and labbing so much, I haven't even connected my projector or installed a TV since moving in here 11 months ago. I'm also looking to get some VR going, headset and sensors are connected to my gaming server in closet #2. Anyhow, you see all my PS4 and retro consoles I had growing up such as Atari 2600, NES, Sega Genesis/32X, PS1, Dreamcast, PS2, PS3 and Game Gear. The joysticks are for emulation projects, I use a Front End called AttractMode and script out my own themes (building out a digital history gaming museum).
Tumblr media
My longest CAT6 drop, from closet #1 to the opposite side of the room. Had to get in a very tight space in my attic to make this happen, I'm 6'8" for context. This allows me to connect this cord to my Unifi Flex Mini, so I can hardware my consoles (PS4, PS5 soon)
Tumblr media
Homelab area includes a space for my daughter. She loves pressing power buttons on my servers on the floor, so I had to install decoy buttons and move the real buttons to the backside.
Tumblr media
Next project, a bartop with a Raspberry Pi (Retropie project) which will be housed in an iCade shell, swapping out all the buttons. Always have tech projects going on. Small steps each day with limited time.

Facing Fears: Together
@ Anon who sent in the ask about the Caesar getting scared by the spider. I really hope you enjoy 😂 this was pretty fun to write not going to lie and I hope you get a few laughs in or even a few coos at the fluffy goodness that is Golden Bacon. 💙
“Alfonse darling, you really should pick this place up a little more, I mean look at all these textbooks that are strung about.”
“Oh, hey! I forgot about some of those.” Alfonse spoke up excitedly as he grabbed one of the books from Caesar’s hands. “I remember this one. It was one of the first books I had bought myself, right before I traveled with the Ministry caravan.” He gave a soft blow on the cover of the book, sending dust particles flying about.
“Then go and put these up on the shelves where they belong.” Caesar handed the rest of the books over with a soft sigh. “I came here to have lunch with my boyfriend who I haven’t seen much up the last week but it appears I’m your personal maid.”
Alfonse chuckled. “To be fair, you’d be pretty cute in a maid outfit in your little piggy form.”
“I’d rather not.” Caesar replied quickly.
“Don’t worry, I won’t. But I can’t promise that you won’t end up turning into your piggy form at some point.”
“Is that your way of saying you want to kiss me?”
“Maybe.” Alfonse grinned as he gave his boyfriend a quick peck on the cheek before stacking the books neatly on the shelves.
“You’re not going to put them on the bookshelf?”
“Not right now, I might want to skim over one of them in a little bit. Having them closer to me, for now, sounds like the best option for me.”
“If you say so.” Caesar shrugged while walking over to grab a broom but just as he reached to grab it, the broom fell down, sliding down behind a nearby potion rack “Seriously?”
“Everything alright?”
“Yeah, luck just isn’t with me right now.” Caesar muttered while trying to squeeze his arm through the narrow crack.
“What happened?”
“The broom fell behind here.”
“Oh, here, let me grab the potions and stuff off there and help you move the rack.”
Each of them would take two potions at a time, careful not to drop any as they sat them on a nearby table. As the last of them were placed, Caesar began pushing the rack, realizing that it was now light enough to be moved by one person. With the broom in his sigh, he quickly bent down and grabbed hold of it and was about to move the rack back when he caught sight of an oddly placed latch. Upon closer inspection, he realized that there was an old worn down door with chipped wood.
“Did you know this was here, Alfonse?” Caesar asked curiously as he reached his free hand out to touch the latch.
“No...I don’t.” Alfonse answered from behind Caesar as he peered at the latch. “Most of the stuff that was in this clinic has been here for a while, even before I took over. The only thing that’s happened was minor repairs and renovation. Most of these things haven’t been touched.”
“Still, you didn’t notice anything odd while you were stocking the potions in the rack?”
Alfonse crossed his arms. “The minute I entered here, I was swamped with patients with the Black Robe Plague. I didn’t exactly have time to stop and look around.”
“Right, sorry.” Caesar rubbed the back of his head as he averted his eyes. “But hey.” his voice perked up. “Maybe now we can do some of that investigating.”
“Well…” Alfonse’s voice began to trail off.
“We don’t have any patients and it’s almost lunch. We’ll have plenty of time to take a quick peek and then put everything back.”
A smile curved on Alfonse’s lips as he nodded in agreement. Without a moment’s hesitation, Caesar dropped the broom he had in his hand, to the ground as he began to wiggle the latch; moving it little by little until there was a small click. Caesar took a small step back as he pushed the door open with his outstretched hand. An eerie cold began to sweep the area, causing a chill to go down their spines. There was no telling what lied in the dark depths of the room, the only thing that Caesar could even remotely make out looked like a switch of some kind.
He shot a quick glance at Alfonse before turning his attention back to the switch, taking a deep breath as he steeled himself for whatever could be lying inside. Once he stepped in, his eyes began adjusting to the darkness, making his vision a bit blurry. His fingers brushed against the wall until he could feel something as cold as the steel of a sword. He quickly identified it as the switch and flipped it up, a dim flashing of light following after as the light bulb came to life,
Though dim, Caesar could at least make out things better, taking note of the many different jars and bottles filled with mysterious things. Most things were so badly covered in dust and cobwebs that it was hard to really tell what anything was, well apart from books, papers, and the likes.
“Caesar? What’s in there?”
“Well, there’s a lot of dust, dirt, cobwebs, you know, the usual stuff you could find in some haunted building.”
“There’s nothing else?”
“There looks like there are some pretty old grimoires and mysteriously filled jars. This whole room needs a good cleaning and then it can be used as a nice storage area. We could really use the space.”
“I agree. Maybe we can get started on it after I close up the clinic?”
“Or…”
“Or?”
“I could go ahead and start on it now and we can have this finished up soon so we can get it out the way and not have to worry about it later.”
“All by yourself?”
“You can repay me by having lunch with me tomorrow.” Caesar winked before getting right to work. Alfonse, on the other hand, had a small blush on his face as he turned away slightly bashful before smiling. That was definitely something he could do.
Fifteen minutes had to have passed by and only a couple of people had ended up stumbling into the clinic with minor things, each treatable with a simple prescription. During that time, Caesar had done quite a bit, but it still looked like he had barely made a dent. Taking his hand, he wiped at his brow before going to move a large box and place it outside of the doo. Alfonse, whose interest had piqued, called out to him.
“Are there any more boxes like that? I could probably help move some out of the way so you don’t trip on your way out.”
“Yeah there’s a few more like ….!”
All of a sudden, there was a loud crash as objects hit the floor, followed by a high-pitched squeal. His sudden interest turned to worry as he nearly tripped over his own feet to get to Caesar. There was another squeal as Aflonse reached the entrance and Caesar came bolting out in his piggy form, clearly shaken up from whatever it was in there.
“Caesar?! You’re…”
“*Oink, oink! *squeal!*”
“Whatever is in there must have scared you so much that you turned into your piggy form. Is it still in there?”
“*SQUEAL*”
“Alright, alright, I get it. Here, you just stay there, alright? I’ll go take care of it.” Alfonse said while smiling.
After poking his head in from the doorway, he found the culprit behind the whole mess. Hanging off the lightbulb by a thin string of web was a small spider. Not wanting to cause it harm, Alfonse went back to his station, grabbed a small glass jar and a piece of paper before taking it with him back into the little storage area. He took a deep breath, timing his movement carefully as he trapped the spider without shaking it up too much. It sat of the piece of paper, barely moving until Alfonse took it outside, watching as it scurried away.
Standing by the entrance to the clinic was a shaken up piggy who was too embarrassed to even come outside to thank Alfonse. Not that he needed to, Alfonse already knew.
“It’s alright, you know.” Caesar tilted his head at his words. “Lots of people don’t like spiders. So don’t feel embarrassed. There are a lot of things I’m scared of too.” Alfonse turned around to face Caesar, watching as the little piggy’s face grew red.
“*Oink...oink oink. Oink *squeal*.”
“Regardless, I still love you, Caesar. No matter what.”
Alfonse had become good at understanding what Caesar was saying based on the tone of his squeals and his body language. He knew exactly what he needed right now and didn’t hesitate to give it to him. With a loving scoop, Alfonse held the Caesar to his chest and hugged him as he walked over to the sofa by one of the bookshelves in the corner. His lips drew close and rested on his head and with a puff of smoke, Caesar reverted back to normal, his blush still remaining.
“I know you said you wanted to overcome your fear, but even so, we have all the time in the world.” Alfonse brought Caesar’s hand to his face as he placed a soft kiss. “You won’t be going through it alone, I’ll be right here for you every step of the way, got it?”
“I...I get it.”
“You know what we need?”
“What?”
“A distraction.” Suddenly, Alfonse’s stomach growled.”How does a late lunch sound?”
Caesar softly smiled. “Wonderful. But what about the clinic?”
“I’ll put the sign up in the front of the door. Today’s a slow day anyway. So go ahead and head out, I’ll catch up with you shortly.” Caesar nodded and took his leave.
Alfonse kept to his word and the two of them held hands as they walked down the street together. Fears, no matter big or small are difficult to deal with, but today, Caesar learned that no matter what, he didn’t have to be ashamed of his fear, nor would he be alone to deal with it. Alfonse would be there to help him every step of the way.

What do we do now? - Part Seven
Tumblr media
Part 7 - Bertram
A/N: THis chapter introduces a new character! he's only mentioned in the books briefly but it was fun to sort of shape his character into whatever I wanted, and I accidentally made him dumb and lovable so I hope you love him as much as I do!!!
Word Count: 2.9k   Series Masterlist /  Character concept sketch!
-
Bertram Aubrey lived in Hastings. Y/n and Remus had begun their journey technically where Remus’ small home was, which was located in Yorkshire. It was roughly a 2 hour and 30-minute direct drive from one place to the other. Y/n and Remus didn’t start their adventure with this place in mind though, they had gone to small towns and countrysides, spent over a week living in the car in the forest, so once they had an actual destination in mind it didn't take long to get there at all.
Hastings runs along England's southeast coast, it’s a rather nice town with a good mix of muggle and magical places alike. Specifically where Bertram lived was a seaside cottage. The cottage was small but it was probably the most ideal little home Y/n had ever seen, Remus thought it was much better in comparison to his cottage.
This cottage was on its own, a lot of grass and wildflowers surrounding it until it reached the tree line which surrounded the sides of the house. It was like a cottage out of a movie, nothing Y/n had ever pictured Bertram living in.
The front porch was nice too, it had one of those seat swings and it was situated so if you sat on it you could look straight down the empty country road that split the forest in two and led to a large field, it’s exactly what Y/n and Remus were looking at right now as Bertram went inside to grab drinks.
“This place is amazing, really.” Y/n commented to Bertram as he came back outside handing them both bottles of soda.
“Thanks, it was my Grandma’s, I'm the only grandchild so she really had no one else to give it to. Glad she didn't sell it, it’s perfect to run my business out of.” Bertram mentioned his business for the second time since they had gotten there which prompted Remus to finally ask about it.
“What is your business, if you don't mind me asking?”
Y/n and Remus were sat side by side on the porch swing and Bertram sat directly in front of them on a chair he had pulled over. He leaned closer to them on his chair like somebody was nearby and could hear them.
“Okay, it’s ingenious really! I buy things and resell them!” He smiled like he had just said the most inventive thing in the world.
“What kind of things?” Y/n asked in a voice full of worry. She was worried that Bertram was doing something inherently stupid, and she was right.
“Simple things, potions, charmed objects, magical creatures, if it’s magic in any way you name it and I buy it and resell it!” He looked so proud as he spoke about himself.
Y/n felt worry creeping up her spine, she had thought of where this was going but she was almost worried to ask her next question. “Bertram, who do you sell these things to? Wouldn't a normal wizard just go to a store?”
“That’s the beauty of it! Wizards can go to a potions store, they can go to Diagon Alley or any other store to get what they need but Muggles? They can't apparate to Diagon Alley! Muggles can’t use the Floo Network! So I go there myself,” he paused and pointed through the open screen door to the fireplace in the living room, “got a fireplace right there, and I buy things and sell them to the Muggles for a much higher price, it’s ingenious as I said before.”
Remus sat there in silence, staring blankly at the stupid man in front of him. Y/n felt like her heart had stopped, her friend who she had known for years, a kind man with good intent was illegally selling magic items to Muggles. “Bertram, that’s illegal, the Ministry will find out it's you sooner or later, they are gonna find out and you can be sent to prison for this!”
Bertram frowned for a moment before shrugging and waving his hand in the air. “Of course I won’t, don't be so worried, you were never a worrier before! Here let me show you my stock, I just did a big haul!”
Bertram stood up walking into his house and Y/n and Remus shared a look of “what did we just walk into,” before following him.
The cottage appeared small, at the entry was a living room containing a fireplace, a couch, large windows and many different plants. Then a small kitchen, a bedroom and many bookshelves lining any wall that didn't have a window.
Bertram walked up to the one in the living room and pulled out a book that had a bit of a shiny glimmer to the spine. When he took it out the bookshelf disappeared into the ground and a secret room was revealed.
Bertram smiled sweetly, like this was completely normal, and guided the two of them into the room. The room was lined with shelves, like a storage room, and each shelf was filled with various potions and bottles and small objects in cases. There was a brewing station in one corner of the room but it looked like it hadn’t been used in a long time and someone had set it on fire based on the burnt cauldron covered in a thick layer of dust.
He spun around waiting for their reaction. “What do you think?”
“This is a lot of stuff Bertram, like a lot of stock to have, are all these even legal for wizards to own?” Y/n asked as she walked up to a shelf and examined a few labelled potions.
“Of course, if I can buy them they must be legal to own? What kind of question is that?”
“Okay, you can buy Dragon eggs but it’s not legal to own them, especially not a Dragon,” Remus commented trying to exaggerate the example to make it make sense to Bertram but he looked dumbly at Remus as if he was speaking Parseltongue.
“Why not?”
“Bertram don't tell me you have Dragon eggs.” Y/n said as she carefully placed a potion bottle down and began to look around the room for any eggs.
“I have more creature and beast related things in the basement!” He said excitedly and rushed out of the room, almost running to the opposite side of the living room. He went to the bookshelf which had two comfy chairs sitting in front of another large window right beside it, this place was actually quite cozy.
Remus followed Y/n out of the room, he took a second to try to close the bookshelf but decided it was best to not touch anything.
Bertram grabbed a similarly shiny book and the shelf disappeared just like the last one, but this time revealed a set of stairs.
“Follow me!” He exclaimed as he yelled, “Lumos!” and continued down the stairs, his loud voice echoing in their ears. Remus and Y/n both silently lit their wands, Remus was unsure why he yelled the spell in the first place.
“You still yell when you cast spells huh?” Y/n commented and Bertram quickly replied with a nod.
 “Of course!”
When they got to the end of the stairs they were met with a large room filled with various boxes, and a table with six dragon eggs or eggs of some sort just casually atop it.
“Oh, Bertram.” Y/n said, lost for any other words.
“Isn’t it cool! I inherited this place from my grandma right, as I said before, I was her only grandkid so I got all of her money too! After she died I built the attachments, it was sad at first because I know she would be upset if I made any changes to her house, but it worked out pretty well. If she ever came back as a ghost she wouldn't even be able to tell! Then I spent my inheritance on stock and started selling it!”
“How much do you sell Dragon Eggs for?” Remus inquired as he lightly moved one to examine it.
“Those are gold mines! I spent my savings on them, I bought them all for 3 million Galleons, but I can sell them for a million galleons each which triple’s my money!”
“How many have you sold?” Remus asked again, ignoring Bertram’s incorrect math.
“None yet, but when I do I will be rich!” Bertram said with a proud look on his face and Y/n offered him an endearing smile, having no words.
Nothing could have prepared them for this. It almost would have been better if they had found Bertram just to find out he had become a death eater or had turned to be a hermit in the woods or something. They had no idea how to even process their current situation, nevermind try to explain to Bertram why what he is doing is wrong.
-
The small cottage, which wasn’t actually so small if you included the secret room and basement, and the back porch that connected to a dock that stretched all the way from where the cottage was on the grass and across the small beach into the water. There was also a garage that was not attached to the house but there was a stairway that led to it from the basement. Remus and Y/n did not inquire as to what he kept in there.
-
Currently, the two were sat on the back porch, watching as the sun slowly went down, a mirror to yesterday night that made them both act awkwardly once they realized it.
Bertram was in the storage room and had been for over an hour.
“Should we check on him?” Y/n asked as she made no move to get up from the bench they were sat on, her legs lazily hanging over Remus’.
“I think it’s better that we pretend to be blind to the whole thing. I'm sure he’s fine he's a… professional at this.”
“A professional criminal? Bertram is just an idiot.” Y/n talked in a hushed tone, her face right beside Remus’ ear.
“Do you think when Sirius and James hexed him and made his head huge that when they shrunk it back down it caused brain damage?” Remus asked and Y/n choked out a laugh, covering her mouth and trying not to look so delighted by the joke.
“Remus, don't say that.”
“It’s a serious question!”
“No, he has always been that dumb, did you hear him yell that spell earlier, he has always done that, always.”
“Well, at least he’s nice.”
“He is, he has such a kind heart. I'm sure some Muggles he’s selling these things to really need them. The others are probably lying to him to trick him, I feel so bad.”
They sat silently for a minute, thinking separately over the different things Muggles would use magic items for until Remus remembered the dragon eggs. “I like that we are just casually sitting here knowing that there are six dragon eggs downstairs.”
“They are probably just rocks.”
“I hope so, I wonder how long he’s had them.”
Their conversation was interrupted when Bertram came outside, a couple of teacups floated through the air and fell into their hands. “Tea?” He asked as if they would say no to the cups already in their hands.
The two said thank you in unison and casually examined their cups before taking a sip, Bertram didn't notice since he was staring into the forest, which was odd because the sunset, a much more interesting view, was right in front of him.
“I lost a Murtlap in my first year here, it ran into the forest there and never came back! I woke up one morning with a bite but I never saw it, at least I think it was a Murtlap bite.” Bertram spoke whatever came to his mind leaving Remus and Y/n speechless yet again, he had quite a knack for saying or doing such outrageous things that any sane person would only be able to just stand there bewildered.
“So how long are you guys staying? You could stay forever if you wanted! Really it gets lonely out here, that’s why I was hoping the dragons would hatch soon. They are worth even more money once they hatch too.”
“Do you have the equipment or spells to handle them?” Y/n asked hoping he had something to control them but Bertram shook his head.
“Nope, but I had a crup once! Accidentally slammed one of his tails in a door so he ended up looking like a normal dog! I trained him to use a human toilet so I'm sure I could train some dragons to be friendly.”
They both sat there stunned again. Bertram really was harmless, he wasn't doing anything intentionally to put him or anyone in danger. He just didn't think about things and in turn ended up putting himself, and everyone in dragon-flying distance, in danger.
Y/n looked at Remus and smiled before answering for them both.“Sure we might stay a bit! We have nowhere else to be really.”
“Great!” Bertram yelled as he stood up and walked away with no explanation as to where he was going.
Y/n and Remus stayed on the back porch well until the sun had set and only darkness surrounded them aside from a few mismatched lanterns that magically lit themselves when it turned dark.
Y/n had fallen asleep on Remus' shoulder, her legs still laying across his lap and he didn't bother moving, he wasn't entirely sure where they were going to sleep anyways.
When Remus found he could barely keep his eyes open any longer he decided to get up, picking up Y/n as he stood, sliding his arms underneath her knees and arms. He kicked the door open lightly with his foot to find the couch in the living room had been transfigured into a bed, or maybe it was just one of those pull-out couches.
There were a bunch of thick hand-knitted blankets terribly folded at the end of the bed that had probably been made by Bertram's grandma. There was a note and an entire box of cookies on the coffee table that had been pushed to one side of the bed, the fireplace was magically lit providing the room with a glowy warmth. Remus carefully balanced on one foot, using his other to pull a blanket down and place Y/n there. He pulled the blanket up over her and then took an extra one from the end of the bed and layered it on her feet in case she needed it.
He walked over, grabbing a cookie and shoving the entire thing in his mouth before reading the note, which thankfully wasn't a warning not to eat the cookies.
“I set the bed up just like how my grandma used to set it up for me! Don't worry the sheets and blankets are all cleaned. I'll be locked in my room all night and you won't see me until late afternoon, I'm forcing myself to get some work done. I realized I hadn't eaten dinner yet and neither had you two, so I took half of the cookies from the box, you can have the rest and whatever else you need from the kitchen, please don't eat the bananas I'm saving them to make banana bread, have you ever made banana bread?”
Everything about the letter was weird, but Remus gathered that was just because Bertram was weird. He was locked in his own room, which is not normal, he had cookies for dinner, which is also not normal but Mr. “I live on coffee, cigarettes and chocolate” wasn't going to judge him on that part. Also, the way Bertram had asked a question at the end of the letter as if Remus or Y/n would write him back or answer it immediately?
Extra weird.
Remus shoved three more cookies in his mouth as he walked over to the fridge to get a drink, inside the fridge, there were two apples on a shelf instead of inside the fruit drawer. The fruit drawer was instead filled with packages of cheese. The milk was expired and there were a few glass bottles with blue shimmering liquid inside, with no labels. Remus closed the fridge and grabbed a cup, tap water was probably his safest bet even if it had lead or straight up dirt in it.
He got into the bed, pulled Y/n against his chest and kissed her forehead gently as to not wake her. She muttered a fragment of a word in her sleep but was otherwise undisturbed.
The cottage was peaceful, no noise aside from faint animal noises in the woods, no cars or people passing by, just the fear in the back of Remus mind that he was sleeping above six dragon eggs that could hatch at any moment.
Once morning came around, the potential danger of dragons had escaped Remus mind, instead, he was awoken from his dream by someone pounding on the door yelling in panicked anger.
“Bertram! Get your ass out here now! You have to explain yourself! Bertram!”

April 15th-April 21st, 2020 Reader Favorites Archive
The archive for the Reader Favorites chat that occurred from April 15th, 2020 to April 21st, 2020.  The chat focused on the following question:
If all webcomics everywhere suddenly costed money to read, how much would you be willing to pay to read them?
carcarchu
i've currently spent about 10 dollars reading paid webcomics and got about 60 chapters with that much. i'll be buying more webcomics in the future but if it's too pricy i'll be less inclined to buy
chalcara [Nyx+Nyssa]
I buy the print volumes of my favourite webcomics, which is about £10-15 for around 100-200 pages? Depends on the comic. But I do get a book to leaf through, so dunno if that counts.
carcarchu
as an added note the app i use to buy webcomics has an interesting feature where u can purchase "food" to donate to the author directly without / in addition to buying the chapters themsevles(edited)
oh now that chalcara mentioned it i also buy the physical copies of webcomics as well and i've probably spent close to 100ish on that
also also that same app gives u daily login coins and u can also watch up to 5 video ads per day to gain extra coins which u can use to buy more chapters or donate directly to the author
chalcara [Nyx+Nyssa]
I DID try a monthly subscription to a rather specific comic content webpage, but I don‘t like that comittment. Vastly prefer buy-once-keep-something-forever; even if it‘s just pdf.
Yeah, have bought pdf‘s of comics before because of shipping expenses.
So yeah, buy once, get something, yay! Subscription, boo.
carcarchu
i had to buy a monthly subscription thing for a webcomic once too but it was a completed comic and the app has a download button so i just downloaded all the chapters of it all at once. i could see the monthly payment being annoying if u had to keep paying it in perpetuity though
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
i've paid for comics before
I'd probably pay to keep reading the comics I love
but I'd be reluctant to invest money to read a new comic i don't know is good or not
i'd need a good friend, person I follow, or well written review's recomendation first(edited)
Feather J. Fern
I will buy physical copies most of the time. I do like having the print in my hands. If it was like a site sub though, like you can put your comics on a site and everyone gets paid a share, then I wouldn't mind because you get options.
But if it is just one comic though, I would be worried,
For example, if people were paid to upload onto Webtoons, but you have to pay like 5 dollars for reading for 1 month, I wouldn't mind because I still can choose what to read
But if for example, my comic is five dollars to read monthly by itself, I don't htink people want it
Especially new readers
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah i think that I wouldnt want to have to spend money to try a comic. Im really very picky and I wouldnt want to risk basically just losing money because I dont like a comic. To continue reading the ones I like I think I'd spend money, but honestly I'd probably only do that once they're complete, too. A monthly payment/subscription for a service with many comics, though, I could see myself paying for
shadowhood (SunnyxRain)
Depends. I’m fine with paying it at once to read it in one go, but not necessarily per month
Also would pay if I got to see a preview first
Joichi [Hybrid Dolls]
As a reader, I also prefer to know what the comic is about first, before committing to pay to read it, like going in blind. I prefer the subscription option to read any comic but not per comic chapter. I like to support the authors if the story appeals to me or purchase their ebooks(edited)
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
I would likely pay to keep reading the ones I'm already into. But I would be very reluctant to check out new ones if I had to pay to even check them out. The first few pages aren't enough in most cases. I also wouldn't be averse to the subscription idea, assuming the platform isn't like, catering to a genre that I'm not interested in. Physical volumes actually don't interest me in most cases. Storage is a huuuuuge issue for me.
DanitheCarutor
Depends on digital vs. physical, the amount of content and quality. Usually I prefer a physical copy since I like collecting indie comics and am willing to pay 10USD - 30USD, I'll even pay high price for hardcover collector editions if I really, really like the creator's work. Like, I actually have a section of my bookshelf dedicated to printed webcomics, which isn't very full yet but I plan on practically overcumbering it someday. Digital copies and subscriptions, I'm oddly a little more stingy about. I tend to forget about stuff like that very easily, so to save myself from wasting money I would have to be almost a mindless fanatic about the webcomic to buy it digitally or keep up with a weekly/monthly pay subscription. As far as price, if it's a subscription I can't afford a whole lot since I'll probably be trying to take on multiple comics, a digital copy I may pay around the same amount as with a physical book.
I'm not too picky about what I would buy, if it looks really good or interesting I'll maybe subscribe to give it a look through, or buy a chapter/volume if I can afford it. Worst that would happen is I didn't like it after all but supported an indie creator trying to get their work off the ground. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
I actually have in fact read many pay-to-read webcomics, and my experience has been somewhere in the middle. I think the most important thing is that the webcomic in question has the first few chapters as free-to-read so that new readers can get a feel for the story, because I wouldn't pay for something I didn't know I would like. The other things is for comics to be affordable. I'm not very wealthy, so the price of a comic chapter needs to be pretty cheap for me to invest. $1 per chapter is the absolute highest limit, and the chapter has to be at least 10+ pages. I'm way more willing to spend more money on print comics because it is something physical that I can put on my shelf, and because I know printing costs can be expensive.
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
No way I'd pay to read a comic without having at least the first chapter free. Even if people are recommending it to me, I still want to see it for myself first. But even then... I don't know if I would spend money on an online subscription - I'd probably wait to see what people are saying about it, save my money, and shell out a bit extra for a print edition (if that's in the cards for the comic). If a comic is free online, I feel even more like supporting it with a physical purchase. If a webcomic is locked behind a paywall... I get it, but it certainly discourages me as a reader.
Eilidh (Lady Changeling)
Same here really. I much prefer giving money to a Patreon or buying merch for something I love than pay to take a chance on something I might not like
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
I agree. I don't mind subscription if it's someone's work I enjoyed but I'm more inclined to buy physical copies or get my own digital pdf of the same thing tbh
Feather J. Fern
I wouldn't mind an idea of like, you get 1 page free a month (Slow I know) but you can buy the full thing now as an Ebook or something. That system would help the author get money (for people who want to support and love their comic from the slow post rate) and great for people who can't afford comic, and read them free at the library becuase they can't even afford computers at home.
I like the print comics too for libraries, gives comics more free access
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
ah imagine if we could check out print webcomics at the library now
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
there is a few libaries that are doin that
Feather J. Fern
Yes! Actually, a few librarians went to Vancaf as long as it has an ISBN it makes it easier (Well we hope there is a copy catalogue somewhere lol) And I know in the US there are a lot more librarians grabbing comics for their shelves
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
yesss which makes it super good
makes me wish I could go to my local libary but like everything else here, it's currently closed orz
Feather J. Fern
Hell, from a podcast I know there is a large interest in comics for libraries, and I know recently they are using comics to try to bring more literacy to people who don't want to read.
This might be off topic I will move it somewhere else
Eilidh (Lady Changeling)
Maybe when I get mine printed I'll go see if the local library would like a few
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
that is why I'm going to be a teacher. Get more people use comics for education lol
GuildmasterPhill
The tricky thing would be finding new comics to get into... how would you get exposed to them? And there are so many, how would you know which ones are worth whatever pricetag goes with them? It would certainly change the whole landscape of webcomics, to be sure.
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
It would probably increase the demand for webcomic reviews.
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
yeah
And again, the first few chapters being available as a sample would be really important.
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
Put in requests for webcomic print collections at your local library! They probably won't get bought during the lockdown, but at least your interest will be on record when the librarians get back.
Mine stocks some, although it's skewed toward really well-known ones -- Homestuck, Digger, Nimona, Cucumber Quest, Skin Horse, Penny Arcade, Gunnerkrigg Court (there's more, I just can't remember them off the top of my head).(edited)
Capitania do Azar
If I have to pay before I can know if I'll like the contents? I'd probably pass, unless there was some other big incentive for me to read it (like a friend's recommendation). Paywalls can be a big turnoff if you don't know what you're paying for, that's what I'm saying. However, if there were previews or free chapters, and then I had to pay to read the rest? I'd probably invest those €€€.
kayotics
I read Stand Still Stay Silent at the library, actually. That’s how I managed to actually get into it, I felt like it was a better experience. As for paying: I will sometimes buy a physical book of a comic I want to read but haven’t yet, just because reading on paper is easier on my eyes. So, sometimes I’ll pay money if I’m really interested in it. But it usually takes me a while to get to that point. If every webcomic went to a paid platform, I’d probably be less likely to read Webcomics.
Feather J. Fern
A thought occurred to me, if all webcomics are paid to read, how would the newbies, or highschoolers, get an audience at all if no one would buy to read their comic?
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
The under 18 creators does pose an interesting question -- are they allowed to make money at all? Would they have to get their parents to sign a thing for them?
snuffysam (Super Galaxy Knights)
I believe so
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
As for small creators with no existing fans, I imagine they'd have to rely on subscription platforms where readers don't have to pay for their comic specifically.
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
Yeah, or just make no money like now
snuffysam (Super Galaxy Knights)
well, it would just also mean no readers because in this world, there isn't even an option to make no money in this world, the webcomic emperor has decreed that all webcomics must cost money to read, and you shall be thrown into The Pit if you make yours free
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
Exactly
snuffysam (Super Galaxy Knights)
actually i guess you could kinda get around it by making your comic cost a penny
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
But yeah, you'd also not have readers and be unable to build a following
Basically the barrier to entry shifts and becomes more like traditional print publishing
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
Slightly different from trad publishing since anybody CAN still post up their comic -- even if no one would read it X'D
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
TRUE
snuffysam (Super Galaxy Knights)
actually you know what it would kinda be like? steam like basically any game devs from the smallest indie devs to the massive corporations publish their PC games through steam. and to my knowledge, all games on steam cost at least some money so indie creators' only option to get eyes on their comic would be the same as indie devs getting eyes on their game. find someone popular willing to review it, and hope for some word of mouth.
Feather J. Fern
Odd take, hold a seminar or not really that but a group gathering where people pay like, 2 dollars, because money still needs to happen, so a bunch of newbie comic artists and pitch their first chapter or something
Oh wait I know what my brain was thinking
like comixlogy
If you can have like a section like "New comics starting out, you can read the whole first chapter for just 0.99" then I might scroll through and be like "You know what, I wouldn't mind some entertaiment"
I think also defintely reviews are really important with this situation
If someoene was like "This art is good, plot is good, grammar is good" I woudl be like "Yeah I would read the first three chapters"(edited)
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
Steam sounds about accurate
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
I definitely think that in this case, good reviews would be like gold
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
Yeah
chalcara [Nyx+Nyssa]
Even Print comics do freebies to rustle up new audience. And steam has a pretty lenient „don‘t like this game? Get your money back“ policy.
RebelVampire
For me the answer here depends on a lot of factors. If it's a one time "bulk" purchase, I'd probably go from $5-$10 depending on amount of pages, time to read, and just overall quality. I'd of course have to be interested as well, but that's an aside point for me in terms of what I'd be willing to pay. Anything past $10 is just kind of too rich for my blood sort of thing, unless it's like a super volume or something. As a subscription, this would heavily depend on the service. How are they curating content? Do they add more content regularly? How much content do they have? How are they innovating to improve my experience as a reader and to be able to find content? How is the industry as a whole? Are there a few competitors making it an affordable option, or is it becoming like tv cable because everyone wants their slice of the pie? With this many questions, it's hard to put a price on a subscription service. Definitely no more than I pay for Hulu or Netflix. But honestly, with the state of the industry right now, I don't think the price would be justified if they made it even like $10/month. Cause as it stands none of the hosts really do anything to improve my experience as a reader and only make things harder for everyone.
Feather J. Fern
This topic makes me love webcomics more, people are giving it to us for free, and It is amazing the internet can give someone an outlet to do so. Thank you internet
Joichi [Hybrid Dolls]
If you can have like a section like "New comics starting out, you can read the whole first chapter for just 0.99" then I might scroll through and be like "You know what, I wouldn't mind some entertaiment"
@Feather J. Fern dang I would sign up so fast if there was a good subscription service like this. And same time it helps give something back to New creators!

To be honest, if I had the money, and the power, and the programing skills I would. I would love to support creators like this. Becuase it also gives people confidence too.

In other news, I finally got bookshelves for my office for the books that I have that are all Classics-related (these are just the ones I have in my office that aren’t in storage or the abyss of my bedroom) because they began taking over my work-related bookshelf.
Each of those books also has a Library of Congress call number on a post-it inside its cover, and I bought labels for the spines. Now I just need to find one of those protective clear bits to put over them before I label them (some I may use the “rare book bookmark” type method because some of them are really nice and I don’t want to them to get mucked up if I managed to keep them nice thus far.
And it looks like those shelves need more friends, so if you have Classics-related books you’d like to recommend, don’t hesitate to send me an ask or at me with your preferred book on a Classical subject or even fiction relevant to Classics :3
Also, I know the binder looks wonky, but it’s currently acting as a bookend. No other way worked, and it’s driving me bonkers.

Creativity and DOIN’ STUFF
Aww yea. Gettin’ some shit done in here.
I’ve got dark, giant-ass, heavy wooden furniture in my (tiny) apartment. I bought myself a jigsaw last week to cut it apart so I can make most of it into shelving to install on the walls, and make part of the wardrobe into a worktable (I have a rando shelf that I’m chopping the legs off to make that table). Turns out that the bookshelf had screw thread inserts, so I didn’t need to powertool it. Victory!
It’s nearing 10:30pm, so out of neighbourly respect I’m not gonna fire up the drill nor the saw to make that table, but come 9am my place Will be Buzzing with Activity.
Also I’ve got most of the stuff needed (perhaps all?) to make at least one of the hidden-storage wall hangings. The premise is a 2-inch deep, 16″ x 20″ box frame that’s covered by a painting on a hinge. Inside it are hooks attached to an MDF board that I’ll hang my macramé string and beads from, so it’s displayed attractively, albeit hidden from view so I don’t go ScatterTorn! by seeing all the things constantly. Only when I WANT to see it.
I’m pretty excited to get things moving in my place so that it’s ready for creativity instead of living inside a storage unit of Stuff and Things.

A Clusterf*ck Christmas
Hunter Husband Holidays Day 6: shhhhh let’s pretend I didn’t miss another day of this thing I rashly decided to do during one of the busiest months of the year. This was going to be longer (maybe I’ll expand it later) but for now here’s Cas trying to wrap.
___________
The library was an absolute clusterfuck. There were cardboard boxes piled underneath every table and in every corner. Where did they get so many cardboard boxes? Dean’d never even seen one cardboard box in the joint and suddenly the library looked liked the backroom at the post office. There was wrapping paper completely unrolled along the floor, balls of it overflowing from a trash can, squares of it covering every table, and there was even a strip of it hanging precariously off one of the shelves. When Dean looked to Cas, who was hunched over a gift basket already wrapped in cellophane, he could see a piece of wrapping paper stuck with tape to the top of his head.
There was a package of bows tipped over on one of the tables and they’d fallen onto the floor beneath it like a mountain of overly-cheery shine. Several spools of ribbon were laying around and one looked like it’d hit the floor perfectly and unraveled as it rolled underneath the nearest bookshelf. There was no way Dean wasn’t dreaming this; it was ripped straight out of some Home Alone knock off–too chaotically perfect.
Dean cleared his throat but the angel didn’t seem to hear, he was too busy grumbling under his breath and turning his head this way and that as if trying to calculate exactly how to get the job done. As Dean made his way through the piles and piles of Christmas crap, he seriously didn’t know where all this stuff could’ve come from, he smelled something sweet and heavy. When he got close enough to the main table he noticed the glass of eggnog there, untouched.
“The eggnog might help,” he said by way of greeting.
Cas neither flinched nor looked up. He must’ve known as soon as Dean’d come in but had chosen to ignore him. What an ass.
After a few more seconds of squinting at the gift basket Cas asked sincerely, “how would eggnog help to wrap this?”
Dean bit back a sigh and tried not to look at the disaster around him. “The alcohol Cas. It might make you better at this. Or at least it will make you not care if you suck at it, which, clearly you do.”
Now Cas looked up at him and the squint was even more severe. Dean waited for the offended comeback and pout but Cas said, “I didn’t put any alcohol in that eggnog. Are you supposed to put alcohol in it? The article I read on how to wrap presents said to put on Christmas music and pour a glass of eggnog so when I went to the store to buy all the supplies I grabbed eggnog.”
“Did the article tell you how to actually wrap the presents?” Dean decided to ignore the fact that Cas’d gone to the store by himself and had practically bought out the entire Christmas section.
“Yes but it didn’t have anything about wrapping something in this particular shape.”
“Right,” Dean said and eyed the cellophane gift basket. It was thick enough plastic that you couldn’t see what was inside very well anyway but Dean decided to ignore this too and took the glass of eggnog off the table. “Well first you need to set this up properly man I mean, c’mon, I don’t even hear any Christmas music.”
Cas’ shoulders drooped even more. “I couldn’t find anything to play music with.”
“There’s an old record player in storage. I’ll see if I can find any Christmas albums and this,” he said holding up the eggnog, “needs some bourbon.”
“Will you show me how to wrap?”
“They don’t call me the wrap king for nothing!”
The squint was back. “Who calls you that?”
“No one. Never mind, hold tight and I’ll be right back.”
Dean made his way to the kitchen and poured the glass of eggnog into the sink. He’d pour a fresh one when he came back from storage. A glance down at his watch made him pause. Die Hard was going to be on TV in few minutes and he’d planned on watching it in his room. It didn’t matter. He could just download the movie and watch without commercials later. Maybe Cas would want to see it too after they were done wrapping whatever the hell it was he’d bought.

so I’m in the midst of reorganizing my bedroom and my roommate recently bought another tall bookshelf for the living room and uh. I am realizing something: I have an ABUNDANCE of Jewish books. I love having Jewish books, but looking at how much book space vs storage space I have even with extra shelves...I think I maybe need to slim down a bit. Honestly, a lot of what I have are like...multiple books covering the same topics. In that sense, I think I could stand to choose my personal favorites and let the rest go.
Would people be interested if I sold some of my Nice Jewish Books to nice Jewish (or conversion student) homes?
