No. 14. — Toilette d'intérieur, en lainage crème. Corsage de velours noir, plissé en gerbe à la taille sous une petite ceinture de galon crème; empiècement crème, garni de galon. Une petite draperie plissée et ornée de galon part du dessus des épaules et revient former les dessous de bras. Manches drapées à hauts poignets de velours. Jupe fourreau, plissée derrière. Des basques habit en velours noir, retombent derrière sur le plissé de la jupe. Galon crème aau bas en ourlet.

No. 14. — House dress, in cream wool. Black velvet bodice, pleated in a sheaf at the waist under a small belt of cream braid; cream yoke, trimmed with braid. A small pleated drapery decorated with braid starts above the shoulders and returns to form the underarms. Draped sleeves with high velvet cuffs. Sheath skirt, pleated behind. Black velvet basques fall behind on the pleats of the skirt. Cream braid at the bottom hem.

Métrage: 9 mètres lainage grande largeur; 2 mètres velours.

No. 18. — Toilette d'intérieur, en lainage mordoré et lainage rayé blanc et mordoré. Grande jaquette, ornée au corsage par une broderie, fermée sur la poitrine par une agrafe de passementerie. Elle est ouverte sur un plastron rayé fermé derrière, à col drapé montant. Manches très épaulées à poignets rayés. Au bas de la jaquette, châtelaine de perles, tombant devant sur la jupe et en longs glands sur le côté. Jupe rayée, sur laquelle est posée une tunique brodée dans le bas, plate devant et plissée derrière où elle est rejetée en petite traîne.

No. 18. — House dress, in bronze wool and white and bronze striped wool. Large jacket, decorated with embroidery on the bodice, closed on the chest with a trimmings clasp. It opens onto a striped bib closed behind, with a high draped collar. Very shouldered sleeves with striped cuffs. At the bottom of the jacket, chatelaine of pearls, falling in front on the skirt and in long tassels on the side. Striped skirt, on which is placed an embroidered tunic at the bottom, flat in front and pleated behind where it is thrown back into a small train.

Most of a Century of House Dresses

this is a project i've been meaning to get on with for... a while. i'm hoping if i document it and post it i might actually make it.

House Dresses (also known as dusters, apron dresses, porch dresses, etc) are practical, informal dresses made to be worn around the house and out on errands. Though they have only been known as house dresses since the late 19th century/early 20th century, they have existed in one form or another for centuries. in the 19th century they were known as Mother Hubbard dresses or wrappers. for much of the 20th century they were a staple in the housewife's wardrobe, and usually were ordered from mail order catalogues.

and with this project i'd like to make a house dress for each decade they were popular in the west, (Mother Hubbard dresses were introduced to Polynesia by Christian Missionaries to "civilise" those they considered "savages', and although the dress has vanished from most of the world, it's still worn by Pacific women in bright floral prints, particularly as church wear) meaning one from every decade from 1900 to 1970, when the house dress as it was known was replaced by the kaftan.

i cant see myself making these in chronological order as my sewing is wayyy too disorganised for that, but i will post every dress i make, and all posts will be found under the tag #dyl's house dresses

Cette robe, en lainage gris rosé, est faite avec un empiècement en soie blanche plissée, prolongé jusqu'à la taille. Cet empiècement, avec col droit à revers, est encadré d'un grand col découpé, bordé de deux rangs d'étroit ruban de velours noir. Les manches, faites avec de grands parements biaisés bordés de velours, sont complétées par des bouillonnés en soie blanche plissée, serrés au poignet par des rangées de velours et formant manchette. Le grand col se termine devant sous un nœud en velours, prolongé jusqu'à la taille et rattaché à un second nœud dont les pans retombent sur la jupe. Celle-ci est bordée de deux volants très fournis en lainage ornés de ruban de velours; la jonction du volant supérieur est masquée sous deux rangs de velours.

This dress, in pinkish gray wool, is made with a pleated white silk yoke, extending to the waist. This yoke, with a straight lapel collar, is framed by a large cut-out collar, bordered with two rows of narrow black velvet ribbon. The sleeves, made with large bias facings edged with velvet, are completed by pleated white silk bubbles, tightened at the wrist with rows of velvet and forming a cuff. The large collar ends in front under a velvet bow, extended to the waist and attached to a second bow whose sides fall on the skirt. This is bordered by two very rich woolen ruffles decorated with velvet ribbon; the junction of the upper ruffle is hidden under two rows of velvet.
