Hey, to those of you upset by Big Sky completely ignoring the fact that in Montana, 26% of their missing persons cases are Indigenous, while the show has ZERO Indigenous representation, please, PLEASE, check out Alaska Daily!
Now, I hate that the are not solving the problem with the representation on Big Sky, even after the people behind it said they listened and that their "eyes were opened." So very much fuck them for that. But this show is all about the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two Spirits (MMIWG2S) epidemic that has been going on since the colonizers came to the US.
It also has diverse representation with Black, Hispanic, Indigenous, and (accurately casted) Asian representation.
And huge bonus points: Irene Bedard is on the cast. If you don't know that name, you absolutely know her most famous character:
Tumblr media
That's right, Irene Bedard played Pocahontas. All problems with that movie aside, she has played one of the most famous Indigenous people ever on screen. I was thrilled to see her name in the credits! I had no idea she was going to be on this.
Please check out this show! Not only is it important, it's actually very good! Certainly miles better then most of the crap that is getting out nowadays. And I hate mystery/procedural type shows, but I very much enjoyed what they have going on here.
Oh! And for those of you who react to things visually, like the coloring of shows and whatnot, there is something about the setting and architecture and color of this show that just makes you feel like you're breathing fresh air. So, that was wonderful.
Please, PLEASE, check this show out!
It centers around one of the many terrible things that have been happening to Indigenous people, bringing a spotlight to one of the ways the US's quiet genocide is continuing against the Indigenous population.

You know, I read somewhere that Sofia Vergara was encouraged (for lack of a better term) to die her hair dark to "look more Latina" (She is naturally blonde). And I am here wondering if Pedro Pascal is being encouraged to keep facial hair because it makes him "look more Latino," too. When you see the characters before he became famous, the vast majority were anglo-saxon and Pedro was clean shaven. Heck even his Agent Ortega, a Latino character he played before he became famous, had facial hair. Coincidence? No, I am not discrediting the latinidad of either, but this white Latina wonders. (Typewise, I am more the dark haired pale olive skin like Pedro). (I have also seen post about younger Pedro looking like Jacob Elordi. Both Pedro and Jacob have Basque heritage (won't say Spanish out of respect to some -a majority, in fact- of Basques). Basques are white European. Jacob Elordi is playing anglosaxon characters. One would wonder if Jacob with older skin and a moustache would "look more Latino")...
To be fair, Pedro is only a quarter Basque whereas it appears that Jacob is Basque on all sides of his family. One ponders...

My favourite thing about diversity is listening to the opinions of others
My partner (Guatemalan, chubby) has such different opinions about some films. We saw in theaters last night a showing of "Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko" and though I found the representation to be a bit problematic and definitely could have been better, I got to watch as they were almost sobbing at it. They found a good representation, they found a fat person who was allowed to be more than just the comedic relief. They found someone who didn't hate their body and did what they could to be a good mom.
I can sit and complain about the representation in Encanto being performative at best and problematic at worst but they love it. They love being able to see Latinx representation, even if they're not from the same countries. I would go so far as to say it is their favourite film and one that will live with them forever.
This is why representation is important. You cannot see true joy until you find someone in their early 20s finally find some sort of representation. Even if it's not the best and we have such a long way to go, I am so happy it exists. I am so happy that my partner gets to see themselves in films as something other than the joke. I am so happy that my partner is happy

Tumblr media
• — miguel o’hara !
you found out he can dance and never stopped bugging him about it ever since. he’s somewhat rusty but give him a couple seconds and he’s ready to go. he’s really good, same par as you just not so enthusiastic about it. still, miguel loves that dancing is your favorite thing to do.
told you that he’s a romeo santos fan and you busted out laughing. to this day, seeing a romeo santos song in his playlist makes you laugh and he’s like “leave me alone”. you asked him if romeo was better during his aventura era.
yes, this also means he’s the number one bachata lover but keeps it a secret from everyone, especially you.
the first time you two ever danced it was to imitadora in his so called office. miguel had to make sure no one came in. he’s the type to have one hand on your lower back to pull you in and he has your other one in his, up beside of his head. whole time he’s dancing with you he’s telling you how much he loves you and has you like “o—oh okay 😳”
no space in between you guys whatsoever. he wants to have you as close as possible and sometimes rests his chin on the top of your head as you two dance to whatever song is playing.
he’s definitely an arm around your waist type of guy. you took note that it was his first instinct when dancing. whether it be when you are in la rueda together or it’s a dance that needs a pair, his arm instantly goes around your waist. also probably the kind of guy who dances with an arm around your waist while both of yours are around his neck.
you’re also an arm around the waist when it comes to this man. i mean, why else is he gonna have that slutty waist if you can’t have your arm around it? anytime you guys are dancing and his arm is around your shoulders, you take this into your advantage and hold onto his waist. he’s like “stoppp 🙄”
miguel is at the age where he just criticizes every song you guys are dancing to. do not look at him when a song he hates is on. he’s staring at you through the corner of his eye just saying ‘don’t you dare’ cause wym you wanna dance to prince royce with him?
makes compromises especially if you have told him you like that song or artist.
“que canción tan fea. no se quien le dijo a valentin elizalde que podia cantar.” (t: what an ugly song. i don’t know who told valentin elizalde he could sing)
“miguel, ya callate por favor.” (t: miguel, be quiet already please.)
most of the time, he doesn’t go in the center of the circle with you. not in a bad way, miguel just loves seeing you dance and capture everyone’s attention. he never gets tired of seeing that smile on your face when you’re dancing with your tias and putting on a show for everyone.
if you want him to dance with you for the entire night, he will. that’s no issue for him. besides, certain bailes he’s the one that’s glued at your side and takes you to dance.
bonus; miguel likes taking a break from all his screens once in a while and starts dancing with you. whenever this happens though, miguel prefers to play slower songs or anything where you two don’t have to move around as much. as long as he’s holding you, that’s all he wants. and he admits to romeo being better in aventura. last verse in ella y yo is all you need as proof.
his dance skills when you first started dating: nine out of ten
his dance skills presently: ten out of ten
his favorite genre and artist: bachata ; romeo santos
Tumblr media
• — miles morales !
when you two first started dating, he knew how much of a dancer you were. you’d always post some videos of you and your cousins at quinces or bailes. so when you both were hanging out by yourselves in his room, you started playing some music to dance with him. then he just looks you in your face to tell you, “nah yeah i can’t dance sorry.”
you called him a “yo no sabo” kid and he was highly offended. regardless, he was very willing to learn because he doesn’t want you to feel like he doesn’t care.
you have so much stamina when dancing he cannot keep up with you. from the minute everyone is allowed to start dancing, you are the first one there and he’s along with you. miles decided to count how many times you sat down throughout a baile and it was three times. those three times were simply because the hosts asked the guests to sit down.
he doesn’t know how you can transition from one genre to another so quickly. half a second ago you both were zapateando together and now they have corridos playing. you were so fast to put you hand on his shoulder and reach for the other, meanwhile the poor boy is trying to process the new beat which is much slower and he trips on his own feet. he’s also very shy compared to the rest when it comes to dancing.
feel like he enjoys listening to female artists a lot more to the male artists.
miles is surprisingly good at tejano, huapango, and wepa. so much so you had to ask him to teach you and he was like ‘neehee what was that, you yo no sabo kid?’
he’s definitely more of an arm around your shoulder type of guy. it just makes it easier for him to pull you towards him and so you two take your steps together at the same time. likes it when you bring your arm around him too or if you hold his hand.
one time, you invited his parents to come along with him at one of your cousin’s quince. you found out miles’ dad is the exact same as he is. even when his parents were dancing, his dad was doing the same things as him. miles is just a carbon copy.
at that same party, miles left to the bathroom for a couple minutes and when he came back, his dad was sitting by himself at their table. meanwhile, you and his mom was nowhere in sight. he asked where you two where at and his dad just said, “on the dance floor,” and pointed to you and rio getting cheered on by your entire family while being in the middle of the circle.
it made him feel happy and once again, offended, because you were dancing with his mom and because you weren’t dancing with him. you and rio got along super well but the way she was having the time of her life with you made miles know he made the right choice.
offended for a third time because you took her to a birthday party you got invited to instead of him. it’s around ten pm when he gets a video of you and his mom getting cheered on while dancing to some cumbias and pulling dance moves he’d never seen before. his first thought once he’s done watching the video is, “yup. she’s the one.”
bonus; miles is really great at la quebradora. you can really thank his spider—man strength for most of it. it didn’t take you guys long to perfect it and once you guys show it off at a baile, his whole nervous demeanor is gone for the remainder of the night. he’ll constantly ask someone to record you guys when doing la quebradora and posts it whenever he can.
his dance skills when you first started dating: six out of ten
his dance skills presently: nine out of ten
his favorite genre and artist: tejano ; selena
Tumblr media
• — hobie brown !
hobie’s really at bailes to eat. like. nothing else to it 😭 you’ll invite him and he’s already thinking of all the to go plates he’s going to bring back home. yes yes, he dances with you. why wouldn’t he? but that food?
hobie gets you in trouble every time with your tias. they baby him saying “mi pobre hoberto, verda que no te da de comer?” (t: my poor hobart, she doesn’t give you anything to eat right?”) and he’s like “no tia 😖” and they give him two plates he’s smirking at you talking about some, “grassy ass.”
off the bat, he’s already preferring corridos, norteñas, bachatas or anything you have to dance to as a pair because of the height difference. he loves being able to hold you close and just look down at you.
though even with songs you don’t need to be paired up with, he’ll do it regardless. hobie just loves the idea of being close to you even in your most favorite thing to do.
he’s one to stick to the basic dance moves and sometimes he doesn’t put much effort when dancing which makes you mad. he knows it does he’s just doing it on purpose because he’s evil.
hobie understands spanish to a good level thanks to you. he likes singing the lyrics with you as you guys dance together. you’re so passionate about it and sometimes he just stops to admire you, a smile on his face.
prefers a lot of the older artists compared to the newer ones. has a bit of a hate relationship with corridos tumbados. doesn’t really want to dance to those and won’t ask you. if you ask him, then he’ll go but you take note he sits there, judging the song as he eats his fifth plate of rice and barbacoa.
he’s an arm around the shoulders type of guy too. it’s just connecting back to the height difference. this makes it easier for the both of you as well so at least one of you can lead. easier for him to lean down and give you a kiss on the side of your head.
likes it when you tug on his arm, dragging him to go dance with him because a song you both like is on. he thinks it’s really cute how excited you get.
bonus; hobie knows which artists you like and the songs as well. he even made a playlist of it to listen to whenever you’re not around. pretends to be shocked when a song or artist you like comes on even though he requested it so he could ask you to dance.
his dance skills when you first started dating: seven out of ten.
his dance skills presently: eight out of ten.
his favorite genre and artist: corridos ; chalino sanchez
Tumblr media
• — pavitr prabhakar !
off the start pavitr was so good at dancing that you barely had to teach him much. instantly, his favorite genres are cumbia and merengue. you’re both in your own world when they come on. he prefers them the most since he likes that you have to move around more to them.
the main thing you had to teach him was how to zapatear. pavitr had the most trouble with that since there were so many different versions of it. he quickly caught on though by looking at you and your family members dance it from the sidelines. he struggled a bit even after grasping the concept but now it’s in his favorites too.
more of a hand holder when it comes to dancing. he just finds it easier to pull you around and give you a spin. but also it gives him a bit of stability and that you both are moving at the same time together.
surprises you with some dances you didn’t even know he was practicing on. they played la iguana one time and pulled you to the center with him. next thing you know, pavitr’s doing la iguana and you’re just staring at him in shock as everyone’s recording him.
loves, loves, loves it when you tell him that everyone at el recalentado was talking about him turning up and being the life of the party. they had asked you if he was columbian and they began guessing what race off his dance skills. until you told him pavitr’s indian and they were so surprised. he got dubbed as a hispanic by everyone there. he feels so special when you tell him. it has him giggling and kicking his feet, “aw your family likes me :)”
pavitr loves doing el grito with los tios. he just likes feeling included in everything. he heard them do it once and just went along with it. you side eyed him wondering how more of a natural he is than you are. is he secretly hispanic? you’ll never know.
texts you one day saying, “your aunt is celebrating your cousin’s birthday. do you wanna go to the party with me?” and you’re like “babe wym?” yes, you saw that right. he gets invited now before you. pavitr is now immediate family. he’s legit the first one to receive an invitation now.
he’ll surprise you by taking you to some bailes he knew about. please do matching outfits with this boy when you guys go 🙏 he’ll dress in your culture’s traditional clothes. in fact, he even starts wearing them as an every day outfit. you find it cute and can’t help but give him a kiss.
that being said, you guys don’t come back home until after three from a baile. you always apologize to your parents but they know that you and pavitr are having the time of your lives. you both love dancing just as equally and you’re glad you found someone who loves it the same way you do. and you both complain about how your legs hurt the next day together.
i mean it when i say no one can take you guys off the dance floor for anything 🙅🏻‍♂️
menace to society when duranguense plays. society being you because he saw a video of this couple spinning really fast while dancing duranguense and they called it “el tornado”. he started doing it every time the genre comes on. turns out he just thought the video was hilarious and loses his mind over it.
bonus; he was one time blasting la mama de la mama at the max volume with hobie driving an old honda civic, driving at full speed down the streets chasing an anomaly in their spider suits. no reason for them to even be in a car, they just wanted to jam to the song.
his dance skills when you first started dating: nine out of ten.
his dance skills presently: gets snatched up by your tias to dance with instead of you.
his favorite genre and artist: merengue ; k—paz
Tumblr media
• — peter b. parker !
first time he ever went to your family party early stage of you guys dating and everyone was like, “how did you two get together?” he’s like “haha yeah i don’t know myself.” when he literally bagged you like this except he said his name instead.
he’s actually standing with los tios as they all watch their wives get down on the dance floor and they’re stuck recording the entire thing for el facebook live. except unlike los tios he’s over there like 😃🤳🏻. he is your top supporter and then tells one of them, “yeah that’s my wife :)” as if they didn’t already know.
his icloud hasn’t been backed up in six years and finally asks you why it keeps saying it. turns out he has over thirty thousand videos in his phone of you at parties dancing. refuses to delete any of them.
he wasn’t the best at dancing when you guys first started dating. okay he was terrible. there was no saving him. which was such an issue for peter because you were always dragging him to bailes and he would have zero rhythm. of course, you started teaching him whenever you guys had time. he practices on his own sometimes just to save you the trouble.
peter tries his hardest to learn because it always makes you an extra amount of happy when you two are dancing together. just do not take him when merengue comes on. he refuses to go.
for one, he’s too stiff dancing it but his legs? how do you dance this every time it’s on let alone continue after the songs change? he’s in pain and had to sit out for the rest of the party the first time he danced merengue. to this day, peter still feels the burn in his legs.
also an arm around the waist type of guy. he loves it a little too much. he likes having both of his arms around your waist while you guys dance to norteñas. he never takes his eyes off you and he likes to give you kisses during the songs.
dumbass accidentally dedicated a narco corrido to you meanwhile you just had to smile and nod at him.
you don’t leave him with los tíos for a long time anymore because he ends up becoming a whole new person. he got drunk with them and all of a sudden, peter just magically knew how to dance. he was having a whole dance battle with one of your tios and won. he’s like, “ya viste? 😃 dicen que gane!” (t: did you see? they said i won!”) where the hell did you learn spanish from? has no recollection of him speaking it the next day.
in fact, he’s actually a whole new persona when tierra caliente music comes on. you still don’t know why and won’t ever find out. the roles end up getting reversed and now you’re dragged to dance with him instead.
needs about two to three weeks to recuperate. what do you mean you guys are going back again? begs you to let him stay home and sleep so he doesn’t need to go to el recalentado.
bonus; definitely said big booty latinas was his weakness to you thinking you were his favorite tio when he was drunk at one point. cried the entire way home because you “kidnapped him from his big booty latina and she was gonna beat both of you up.”
his dance skills when you guys first dated: zero out of ten.
his dance skills presently: eight out of ten.
his favorite genre and artist: norteñas ; seto vargas

I know that we’re all super busy, and we’re all sick of Star Wars, but it’s really bothering me that so many members of this fandom stayed up till 3 AM to watch Kenobi, and every week #Obi-Wan Kenobi was on the trending page, and now it’s been weeks and a majority of this fandom haven’t even seen Andor.
It’s just a discrepancy in effort, and it bothers me a lot.
I’m not saying people can’t be busy, I’m not saying you HAVE to watch Andor, but so many people went out of their way to watch Kenobi, so many people went out of their way to make Kenobi trend, and now Andor is out and it’s phenomenal and it’s lead by so many people of color and so many people won’t even turn up at all.
Having a Mexican lead in a Star Wars series is a phenomenal milestone. Show up for it.
Having a Star Wars series that discusses racism, colonialism, industrialism in a meaningful way is a phenomenal milestone. Show up for it.
Just. Please show up.

i think i’ve learned a lot when it comes to not applying my own values to the media i consume
for my script analysis class yesterday, we discussed two gentleman from verona, and nearly every classmate of mine was up in arms about how sexist the story is.
and i'm not saying it's not, or that it's not infuriating to read. but i'm also not putting my energy into getting upset about something written 500 or so years ago. and i'm not about to put my own beliefs onto these characters that are not me. i'm going to let their choices speak for themselves, and interpret it in the context of the story.
all that said, this now brings me to the point of alastor in episode 5, and how viscerally people are responding to it. those of you up in arms about the choices he’s making, and the violent threat he gave husk, you’re missing the entire point of his character, of this place they’re in, of the story being told. he’s an overlord, and he became an overlord by killing much bigger overlords and broadcasting their deaths over the radio.
HE IS NOT A GOOD PERSON.
if you started this show with the belief that every character working the hotel is a good person, you’re in the wrong place. watch the good place if you’re looking for a good wholesome story about getting dead sinners into heaven, because that’s not what this show is about.
you’re more than welcome to hate him after seeing the way he exerted power over a being whose soul he owns, but you’re doing the media you’re watching a disservice by writing it off so quickly. if you don’t like to be uncomfortable watching media, watch something else. this is an uncomfortable show, it handles uncomfortable topics, and it’s going to be an uncomfortable ride, and if you’re not up for something like that, then you should take a break from it and pick up something else. you don’t have to get online and defend your own ideals while you watch a show that goes against your ideals.
#hazbin hotel spoilers#that’s not even touching on the fact that husk was an overlord too#he also owned souls that he used as currency to supply his gambling addiction#he’s also not a good person!!#the majority of these characters are in hell for a reason: they’re not good people#i quite frankly love the way this show blurs the lines between good and evil#our heroes are sinners and overlords and demons. while the enemies are angels. but that doesn’t mean our heroes are good people.#you HAAAVE to come to terms with that!! you have to stop seeing the world in black and white or you’re not going to survive this world#if you’re upset because alastor was cruel to husk fine! be upset! but explore why you’re taking yourself out of that world.#in this world sinners own other people. there’s no ifs ands or buts#‘oh alastor is a poc why would he own people’ he was a serial killer when he was alive do you really think you can apply your values to that#(and this is me speaking as a poc. specifically a mixed race poc.)#i cannot speak to who vivzie is as a person. but i’m interested in the message she’s writing and thus far i’m finding it compelling#it’s a similar story as the good place but it’s going the distance to explore even worse people than those in the good place#i don’t think it’s responsible to write something off just because unsavory things happen in it.#and she’s giving us so many different types of representation that don’t involve race (although we’re also getting a lot of hispanic rep)#just like cool your jets and maybe process some of the anger you’re feeling. and maybe nothing will change.#but if you act. instead of react. if you understand why you’re feeling some type of way and then make a choice.#that’s so much stronger and more responsible than reacting and not thinking anything through#hazbin hotel#alastor#husk#hazbin alastor#hazbin husk#anyway let me get off my soapbox#long post

Just wanted to say I appreciate your take on the whole white man/woc imbalanced power plot issue. This is something that I had a big problem with in season 4 and others definitely seemed to pick up on the same when all the storylines were Wesley, Nolan or Tim centric, and Nyla, Angela and Lucy were seemingly left as the 'other'. However I feel like I saw the issue be forgotten in the fandom a little. It seems this show has consistently favoured highlighting the male struggle and treating female storylines as trivial and unworthy, other than that of Bailey, the then newly introduced and now main cast white female character. I thought this would change with Lucy's story now being written consistently in s6 but it's clear that Tim's potentially the more favourable storyline. Now I can't speak from a psychological standpoint on what Tim did to Lucy but from a plot pov it's definitely making the white man vs woc power issue glaringly obvious. He is the one that gets to start or end their relationship. He's the white man with issues that is allowed to feel what he wants and grow his character while the asian woman is left behind despite her own depth and trauma. Let's hope that Lucy is given the same grace of dealing with her issues and growing as Tim, and Lucy gets her power back.
Hi Anon!
Thank you for your kind and thoughtful message. And thanks for patiently waiting for my response. I agree with everything you said. I believe the post you’re referring to is this one and possibly this one too.
It’s clear that the show has favored male storylines, particularly those of Wesley, Nolan, and Tim (and Bailey a non-WOC), while sidelining WOC ones. And even though the focus here is on Lucy and Chenford, I’m equally happy and willing to talk about race through the POVs of Angela/Wopez and Nyla/Jayla too.
I don’t think the actual act of Tim breaking up with Lucy has a racial dynamic to it other than the obvious. Them being of different races is just who they are. But their overall relationship (TO/Rookie, mentor/mentee, sergeant/gofer, friends, couple, etc.) does. And Melissa, bless her heart (affectionate), codes so heavily as Chinese in her mannerisms too and this gets projected onto Lucy. But that’s not talked about very often either. I say all of this to agree with you, Anon, because the “white man vs woc power issue” as you described has existed the whole time.
Let’s look at S5b and S6. A WOC masterminded the career progressions of at least two middle aged white men. One of them derailed her career progression. The other one broke up with her. Both broke her heart in very different ways. We did get some of Lucy’s character development and growth in S6 on the front end of the season. But even within that, her storyline has been about the 5 player trade (made to benefit Tim primarily) and Tim not being comfortable with her in UC. Tim gets demoted but he has a cushion to fall on because Lucy trampolined him into the Metro clouds and now the show’s able to use what Lucy did to benefit Tim again and use that to give him room to fall back on. This is part of the whole ‘using a WOC as a plot device to further a white man’s story’ which I’ve shared about in regards to the breakup (which is different than the act of breaking up) and you've detailed out too. We’ll see what happens to her story in the next few episodes, and I too hope that Lucy is given the same grace and that she does get her power back. But no matter what happens in future episodes, that trope was used so the genie’s already out of the bottle.
You did bring up the fandom, so I am going to talk about it a little more. This next part may be hard to hear, Anon, but … I have received negativity from Chenford fans for talking about Lucy and Melissa O’Neil’s race. This shows me that this topic is so worth talking about because there are people who feel a certain way about seeing race-related discussions about Lucy (they don’t want to be anywhere near it) and I do believe it’s unhealthy for the fandom to have these beliefs about a WOC. Others in the fandom have also encountered negativity and pushback when discussing this topic. Maybe it's even happened to you. People have shared their fandom experiences with me privately, but you’re the first to do it Anonymously which is great because that means you’ve given me the opportunity to respond to you publicly.
Challenging this negatively held belief within our fandom and embracing Lucy/Mel’s racial and cultural identity is a worthy endeavor so let’s move the dial on that. It starts with talking about these topics in the context of The Rookieverse and keeping an open mind if these topics are unfamiliar to us. I mean, Mel wants more of that too.
Thanks again, Anon!

Maybe it's the Mexican in me, but I can't stress enough how good Blue Beatle was. Is it a simple origin? Yes. What makes it different from the others? Again, the Mexican in me speaking, it was pure fun and heart. More than most hero origin stories. I 100% related to the racism in this film, from people refusing to pronounce your name and say your last name instead. And there's still a 50/50 of them mispronouncing that, too. Or the amounts of people at work that walk past me thinking I don't speak English. Which usually ends with them trying to speak to a blond, white or black employee, only for them to not speak English and send the customer back to me. Or when a lady was recording me because she most likely thought I kidnapped my little sisters. Or how I keep getting mistaken as the babysitter for my white passing sisters. It's a good list, really.
And a lot of the sad moments can be cheesy, but dang it, it got me because it's accurate to how my family was treated in America. People like to think racism towards Latinos isn't a big deal anymore, but it is. Especially in the upper class, like the movie portrayed.
And when they showed El Chapulin Colorado, I felt great. He's an original slap stick superhero that was created in Mexico. Created by a well-known and respected man in Mexico City named Roberto Mario Gómez Bolaños or also known as Chespirito. And just the mention of El Chapulin Colorado made me happy because he is the first and original Mexican hero, not Blue Beatle.
In other words, this film has so much respect for Mexican and Latino culture and doesn't treat us like a joke. If you're Latino, Hispanic, or want to be an ally to our community, seeing Blue Beatle is definitely a start. For understanding our struggles and supporting Latinos in the entertainment industry. Pushing for more representation for us and having people understand us more.

I would be lying if I said that I was not disappointed by the canonical home of Jaime Reyes being changed both in the movie and in recent comics. However, I would also be lying if I said that I absolutely detested the movie for whatever reason. I enjoyed the movie for what it was and what it meant to the Hispanic and Latinx communities. It is a huge deal, and I think it was done well. Going back to my original point, it is hard to be disappointed when it feels as though I am not missing out on much when Blue Beetle's relationship with El Paso was never done true justice anyway.
The West Texan Mexican-American experience is hard to fully encapsulate into one solid thought or idea. I can confidently say that the approach DC had in most iterations of the comics, cartoons, recent movie, and other forms of media always toned the experience down and made it a duller aspect of his story. I can not recall even a single time when El Paso was brought up or portrayed in a way that was recognizable to an El Pasoan across any of the aforementioned media. It always felt disconnected and out of touch, but I still held it close to my heart because it was something alluding to home.
In a way, I am happy that Blue Beetle is now from the fictional (emphasis on that) Palmera City, because it reiterates that heroes can only be super in Hollywood when they are superficially placed in a cookie-cutter big and flashy city. All I really have to say to that is, good for them. They did what they needed to in order to reach a wider audience. I am sure that the payoff for the corporate powerhouses at the end was worth it even at the cost of individuality. Come to think of it, my mind cannot really conjure up any mainstream superheroes that operate in any desert long term. Any time spent in the less "glamorous" parts of the Southwest is almost always smaller plot-driving settings that act as a stepping stone for bigger heroes and not as a home.
Anyway, all of this is to say that I understand why they did what they did with the setting. I even still happen to think the entire production team did a great job, but that does not stop me from wondering what could have been at any point in Blue Beetle's recent history if someone had used the beauty, culture, and complexity found uniquely in Sun City far more productively. There was so much more potential than the oftentimes vague and noncommittal nods given to the setting. It just was not utilized to its fullest potential, and if that would have been a continuous theme, then I am glad that they are no longer working with it.
Shifting to something less ranty, I absolutely suck at drawing. I am a STEM person through and through, but that did not stop me from visualizing all of the things I would have loved to have seen portrayed in a Blue Beetle story while experiencing being a teenager in El Paso. He was my absolute favorite superhero because he was one that I saw every single day in my hometown, and there were several things I felt he would have enjoyed doing.
For example, we have a ton of high schools. If I had to narrow down the ones I think Jaime Reyes would have attended, I would probably say my top three picks would be: El Paso High School, Bowie High School, or Austin High School. An interesting custom that schools in El Paso have is placing the first initial of a myriad of our high schools on the mountains. They are huge and visible, as well as a testament to our school spirit and pride. The Top 10 percent of most of our graduating classes wear different colored gowns at graduation than the rest of their peers, which is something I was told was not a common occurrence in most other states.
Homecoming is a huge deal, and people will buy, make, or sell Mums and corsages. It is kind of difficult to explain to people from around the states who may not be entirely familiar with what it is, but it is an old Texan tradition that is typically shared between sweethearts (dates) on the last day of Homecoming spirit week. It is something that a lot of people go all out for, and plenty of pictures exist on the internet of the various ways that they can be customized. I always thought it would be cool to see what Jaime Reyes would do for his Mum.
Prom is pretty much Prom wherever you are in the States for the most part, and ours are held at some great venues in the city, so there is not much more to say about that part of the high school experience. As far as colleges go, some of the most popular for teenagers at El Paso high schools to apply to are UTEP, EPCC, TTU, Texas A&M, and any of the other UTs (UT Austin, UT Dallas, and UT San Antonio to name a few). There are even several private universities like Rice, Baylor, and Trinity to name a few more. Hell, a lot of us even go to schools like NMSU in what is essentially our sister city of Las Cruces, there is also UNM, ASU, U of A, and CU. There are so many different choices for universities that are realistic and in the general area that Jaime absolutely could have chosen to apply to and attend. I think that seeing him initially as a Junior or Senior in an El Paso high school, and subsequently watching his transition into a college student in the city or elsewhere while grappling with his powers and responsibilities as Blue Beetle would have been so fascinating.
As far as places that it would have been nice to see him interact with at some point, it would be easier to just give a general list of my favorites. I wish that the following places could have been incorporated into the Blue Beetle story at some point long past: Chico's Tacos, Franklin Mountains State Park, Transmountain Road, Downtown, The Plaza Theater, Cielo Vista, The Fountains at Farah, Sunland Park, the Outlet Shoppes, Rosa's Cantina, Southwest University Park, Don Haskins Center, Concordia Cemetery, Scenic Drive-Overlook, the El Paso Star, Hueco Tanks, San Jacinto Plaza, St. Patrick Cathedral, any farmer's market or swap meet, any of our museums (Art, History, Archeology, Border Patrol, Science, Chamizal), the Coliseum, Ardovino's, Orange Cow, Burrito House, Bowie Bakery, Lucy's Cafe, any of our dulcerias, as well as literally any of our regional and national recreational chains. Obviously, there is so much more, but all of what I listed could have definitely been used for something whether it be a fight with a villain of the week, or opportunities to flesh out Jaime's character more socially and individually. That, and it tickles my funny bone to imagine the Teen Titans trying something like Chico's Tacos for the first time.
Unrelated, Jaime would totally listen to Khalid.
Naturally, there are so many other locations in surrounding cities and states that easily could have been used as well for any plot points that would have added even more Southwestern charm. I mean, part of New Mexico's tourism schtick is literally aliens (Roswell), and the scarab is in fact an alien now. However, for the purposes of this, I focused on El Paso. That is really all I have to say about all of this, if you stayed for my entire rant I appreciate it. If not, I totally understand, and I really just wanted to put my thoughts out into the world and write this love letter to my home city.
I love that Blue Beetle is now further into the general public's eye, and that his character means something for the entire extended community. He now has room to change, grow, and evolve from what he was before in a way that is far more defined by the expectations for a mainstream hero. Even if the El Pasoan Jaime Reyes can only exist truly in my mind, it is an okay price to pay for a narrative that touches my heart specifically. I am most certainly not a writer, so I hope that the next time we have a hero from El Paso, some of my city's charm can truly be done justice. After all, the only person who can characterize an El Pasoan correctly is an El Pasoan.

Imagine Jack Russell......
Tumblr media
Oh. My. God.
Have ya’ll seen this? Gael Garcia Bernal in Motorcycle Diaries?! He is so hot!
Writers of tumblr please make a Jack Russell short out of this masterpiece of a scene! I was on a Gael Garcia movie spree and when I watched this, it awakened something inside of me. I don’t usually post content- but this was so ethereal and spicy. His acting was so passionate and spot on. Pure cinema. I just couldn’t-- asdfghjkl. Tag mee if you please!
I imagine Jack (wwbn’s beloved goldenwoof boy) would be this passionate and clingy with his S/O.
Tumblr media
Jack’s love language is physical touch. He appreciates being given lots of pats and warm cuddles(partly due to his heritage of having canine traits). So he loves to caress his s/o intently. all.the.time. But his favorite part is when he just stares at his s/o getting lost in their eyes.
Tumblr media
Jack is calm while handling his s/o, and with every kiss he is gentle and slow, savoring the taste of their lips.
Tumblr media
Jack likes lots and lots of intimate playfights. When he can’t get enough, his canine instincts would kick in and he would dive in his s/o’s neck (his favorite spot) to linger in that sweet scent of them.
-and
BONUS
Tumblr media
He fucks-
oh. so. graciously.

Just wanted to clear up some confusion with Asha from Wish, since I’ve been seeing it a lot. She’s not Afro-Latina but Afro Hispanic.
Tumblr media
I’m assuming the media gets it wrong because over in the west (USA, South, and Latin America) a lot of the Hispanic people here are also Latino, so we tend use the terms interchangeably although they are completely different things. But have an overlap in the west due to Spanish colonization.
Here’s a visual if anyone wants it:
Tumblr media
For anyone who don’t know, Spain and Portugal occupy the Iberian Peninsula, which is separated at its southern tip from North Africa by only a narrow strait situated at the juncture of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.
I’m assuming since the name of Asha’s kingdom is Rosas, it’s closer to Spain. Also it wouldn’t make since to be associating her with being Latino( As I’ve already said a lot of people use Latino and Hispanic interchangeably due to the large overlap in the west) if she was assumed to be Portuguese or connected to Portugal in any way.
TLDR; Asha is Afro Hispanic, NOT Afro-Latina.

I really appreciate how realistic this comic portrays Jess' anxiety. Yeah, over time, you learn strategies to help you deal with it, but that doesn't mean it actually ever goes away.

• “What are they gonna do?! If you’re real spirit! Show me a sign!” he said jokingly as he was drinkng your ancestors alcohol..
• he literally saw a book yEET across the room.
• than he saw a shadow figure walk close to him. Lights flickered, and then sanji started screaming “MY BISCUITS!!”
• “okay okay!! I’m sorry.” he mumbled.
• when you gave him a tarot reading that’s how you knew he had feelings for you.
• he didn’t even know until sanji, nami and robin had to explain it to him
• “oh… is there something you’ve been wanting to tell me…??”
• “yeah this.” he just straight up kissed you
• since than he always went to you for your advice. Since you give him readings all the time
• WEEKLY CLEANSES ARE A MUST!
•one time Zoro accidentally drank Florida water (it’s a cologne thats very powerful in brujería)
• if you’re a Santa Muerte Devotee now he’ll give her a glass of alcohol just for you to be safe.
• he always watches you from behind when you do a cleanse or a ritual for the crew. You’re just his sweet wittle bwuja 🥹💗
•he does buy you a pendant of your santo and takes it to the medicine man to get it blessed personally. because he knows you’d appreciate it if he took the time to do something for you
•as you do so much for him.
• “I found you a rock I thought you could use it.”
•” oi, gremlin. can you do that thingy with the smoke and that plant? I hate to say this but my vibes are off.”
• “can you ask your cards if im gonna beat that curlys ass soon?!”
•”what does my dream mean of seeing you naked?”
• “I keep seeing numbers like 111 or 222, and repeating numbers WHAT?! DO THEY MEAN!”
• “I can take the jar back.”
•” NO… I like it…”
•San judas takes his onigiri because you pray for him a lot to be safe AND TO NOT GET LOST 😭
• when you visit every medicine man in every island you go to. He goes with you and you always ask them to check if everyone will be safe. You’re making sure everyone’s safe that’s adorable :)
• yes he’ll do spicy magic with you
• overall he finds you to be very powerful, and hot at the same time. His love for you will only grow stronger
