i am revoking the fanfic reading privileges of anyone who went on a racist or islamophobic tirade when ao3 was down, as well as for those who looked the other way as it was happening
and as if engaging in rhetoric that vile wasn’t enough, y’all really did it on the anniversary of a genocide too

It was genuinely surreal to sit here as a person of color and watch people complain about AO3 being down and then instantly watch their complaining turn into blatant xenophobia, Islamophobia, and raging racism, as it has so many times before.
In one breath, people yelled about their fandom space being taken away from them, and they cried about the isolation. Then in the next breath, these same people would isolate an entire community with hateful speech and misinformation.
This trend is not new. This behavior is not new.
I’m so sick of AO3. I’m so sick of the current fandom culture.

I have to spend nearly every second of my online existence defending myself against racism.
I’ll make posts calling out racism in Star Wars or I’ll criticize racist structures in media or society and instantly, I’m met with name calling, slurs, callout posts, anon hate on my side blogs, I’ve had multiple people threaten to doxx me, I’ve had people make burner accounts to argue with me, every other day I wake up and I’m met with new paragraphs and paragraphs of racist essays degrading me and my people.
I have to monitor every second just to exist online, almost all other People of Color have to do the same.
The very least other people can do, is be actively anti-racist, and help create a safe and healthy online environment for People of Color.
Don’t excuse fetishization in your tags. Block that person. Don’t reblog or engage with whitewashed art. Don’t work with creators who excuse racism or refuse to acknowledge it. Listen intently to posts about racism, and adjust accordingly. Don’t ignore difficult conversations, show you’re willing to listen! Be open minded and mindful!
Every “little” bit helps.
You can make a change and you can help create a safe environment on your blog for People of Color.

In summary, fuck ao3, fuck fandom racism, I’m glad Thrawn is ugly because his fans need to be humbled and I hope the oceans rise up and swallow us whole

a big reason why a lot of these fandom “elders” are white is because they pushed all of the people of color out of their circles in their teens and twenties send tweet

I need everyone to know that the rampant racism that taints fandom spaces makes it so difficult to even exist as a person of color.
Constantly mine and others discussions on racism are met with dismissal, refusal, willful ignorance and malice. Constantly. Even months later, I will still get reblogs on posts where people tell me I’m being “dramatic”. They’ll deny that racism exists in their favorite media, they’ll deny that their fandom is racist and the entire time they will talk down to me, degrade me and speak over me and my feelings.
I’ve been called horrid names and I’ve had three separate people make burner blogs just to argue with me on my posts discussing racism. Three.
And worse yet, some people seem to think the opposite of racism is fetishization. If they aren’t being hateful they are boiling down characters of color to stereotypes or hyper-sexualizing them. They’ll only see men of color as aggressive sexual objects, then call it appreciation. This is not appreciation. This is racism.
And don’t get me wrong, I am forever grateful for the support and community I have found. So many of you are insightful, attentive, kind and compassionate. So many of you are willing to grow and listen.
But I am so sick and tired of waking up every morning and blocking racists, I’m so sick and tired of justifying my existence in this fandom. I’m so sick and tired of living in fear of fetishization. Im sick of feeling dehumanized by fetishization in this fandom. I’m so sick and tired of seeing whitewashing.
I’m sick of seeing characters who look like me get hypersexualized. I’m sick of seeing characters who look like me get dehumanized. I’m sick of how this fandom treats characters who look like me. Im so sick of how this fandom treats people who look like me.
I’m so sick of it.
Racism is exhausting.
