as a mexican i can’t help but laugh at how wrong some americans writing mexican characters get the way our name system works so lemme explain so you can get it right!
so most mexicans (remarking MOST because i do mean 99% of us) have TWO last names that come from our parents. it's basically like this:
name / paternal last name (dad's first last name) / maternal last name (mum's first last name).
the first last name is ALWAYS the paternal last name, it always comes from the dad side of the family. there are some exceptions though. in 3 states of the country it's already legal to put the maternal last name first but it's very rare and usually only in special cases, like when the father is absent for example.
there are also cases where the person has only one last name but this is not only extremely rare but it can cause a lot of hardships with legal documentation like school, banks, etc. this can happen for some reasons:
1- they're the child of a single parent (however, to avoid the difficulties that come with having one single last name some end up being registered with the same last names as the parent, but inverted)
2- they were registered in another country where they only have one last name (for example USA, a friend of mine was registered there and for that reason they only have one last name in their documents)
it's important to mention that unlike american last names, the two last names are not separated by “-” they're only separated by a space.
the last names are not necessarily one word, some have two or three. for example last names like “de la rosa” or “del olmo”
also, there's no such thing as married name here. women don't change their last names nor mix them with their husbands last names.
as i am aware, last names tend to work like this in all latin america but many specific details may be different depending on the country and i am not that well informed.
either way, i hope this helps anyone who’s developing a mexican character!

I just want to talk about how incredible these films have been. The laughter, joy, sadness, and hope. And the thing that really gets to me is the positive representation for so many beautiful cultures. For me, Tobey Maguire was my Spider-Man. I grew up with his films. Those films are like treasures to me. But Miles Morales… African American and Puerto Rican. To see such a great hero with proud ethnic roots… and all these little kids get to see that on the big screen? It truly brings me so much joy. THAT will be their Spider-Man. Someone who looks like them. Who speaks their language. And not just Miles, but all these wonderful characters. The impact of these films. We can’t even begin to imagine. ❤️

This is something that has been bugging me for a while.
Fenton Crackshell-Cabrera served as Latino representation in the reboot series and while I like his character I think not pointing to an specific country for his roots gives the freedom to choose (specially to Latinos who would like to project) but at the same time it feels lazy, like another American production throwing all Latino cultures in the same bag.
The DT Wiki claims he has Cuban roots but I don't think there's a canon source for this, isn't it? Correct me if I'm wrong.
Another popular country is Puerto Rico because of LMM (his VA) ancestry.
Anyway, I'd like to hear your headcanons about him, tell me which country did you pick and why. Was he born there? Does he visit said country? I'd like to hear everything.
Oh, and if you are Latino I'll gladly take drawing request of Fenton doing something related to your culture, for example: Fenton drinking mate, Fenton saying your favorite insult.

Let's criticize Disney and their awful decisions, one of my favorite activities.
Apparently they are working on a new animated show called "Primos" based on a latinoamerican household. However, they had no idea what they are doing and when people call them out, they are playing the "you don't understand" "it isn't that bad card".
One of the main issues is that they are using Spanish phrases that are grammatically incorrect. If this was a person speaking Spanish in the show, then it wouldn't be that bad because you could understand that it is learning the language, but they are using it in the slogan and main intro of the series. If you are going to use a phrase in another language as your slogan, at least be sure that is correct. Someone mentioned this to the main voice actress of the show, it should had been mentioned to the official page instead and the actress could had perfectly ignore it. But no, the actress choose to call that person a grammar n*zi and say that Spanish is a conqueror language. WTF?? And that is the person you choose to voice the main character?
There are more issues like the name of the kids - specially one named as the slang for p*ssy, which I found incredibly weird that they decided to use this word for a children name. The city is named Terremoto (Earthquake), a natural disaster that had caused hundreds of deaths in Latina American countries.
They started promoting the show as a latinoamerican household, and then changed as Mexican household when people told them Latina America was more than Mexico.
And one of my main issues is the awful design of characters with curly hair and brownish skin compared with characters with light skin. I mean, look at this:
Is as if they decided to do everything wrong on purpose.

⚠️Long Post Alert⚠️
Alright I've seen a lot of (negative) buzz around Disney's new show "Primos" so I'm gonna put my 2 cents in
According to the Primos wiki, the show is about "Tater, an eccentric 10-year-old girl with big dreams and, unbeknownst to her, a certain “it factor” that makes her exceptional. When her 12 cousins (“primos” in Spanish) move in for the summer, they help her discover just what it is. Tater’s aspirations and larger-than-life imagination are seen via entries in her super-secret diary, which turn her deepest thoughts into grandiose animation sequences."
FIRST, it's yet ANOTHER piece of children's media about the main character + their large Latin American family.
Upon doing some research apparently this show is about the creator's personal experiences, which okay valid. But when creating media that meant to represent a community it would be better to offer a DIFFERENT perspective rather than give us the same trope that has been done to DEATH.
And I'm gonna be real with yall, I LOVE Coco and Encanto, but both movies also fall under this trope. Not all Latin American families live with their extended family, we don't need ANOTHER piece of media perpetuating the stereotype.
Also, Disney has been putting out a few shows on Disney Channel and Disney Junior that are clear knock offs of Nickelodeon shows. Some examples:
And...hm....lemme think....a kids TV show about a Mexican girl and her quirky large Mexican family getting into some Mexican™️ shenanigans...where have I seen that before...?

Yeah the premises are slightly different, but it's essentially the same trope so already right off the bat Primos feels like a knock off version of The Casagrandes.
SECOND, there are many stereotypes already present in the series just from tbe opening theme. Many of the cousins fall into stereotypes themselves, particularly the names. Some the names of the cousins are Gordita, Big Nacho, Nachito, and Cookita. I've seen people justify the use of these names by saying many Latin Americans are given these names as nicknames, which is true. But then again, having a characters named Nacho and Gordita in a show that's supposed to be about LatAm representation is just in bad taste. It's giving "Marco Diaz from Star vs. the Forces of Evil being half Mexican and being obsessed with nachos for some reason but not representing his Latino heritage in any other way other than him wearing that Day of the Dead themed costume in The Blood Moon Ball ep." It feels lazy, and of course, stereotypical.
On TOP of this, the word "Cookita" in many LatAm countries is slang for pussy and the suffix "-ita" means small. And the character with this name is the BABY. So yeah maybe naming the B A B Y character something that to many Spanish speakers means "little pussy" in a show ABOUT Spanish speaking Latin Americans probably isn't the wisest decision.
Another detail people have been pointing out leans into negative Mexican stereotypes is the use of the "yellow filter".
Now I'm gonna be real and say I'm not 100% convinced about the yellow filter being used here. The show takes place over the summer, so the use of yellow might may be used to give the feeling of how hot it is, but I can totally see why Latin Americans would find this offensive.
Also the name "Terremoto Heights" has been heavily criticized. Terremoto means "earthquake" in Spanish and the earthquakes are common in LatAm countries. Then again, show takes place in LA, where a lot of earthquakes occur too. So Im not 100% convinced that this is flat out racist either, but it's definitely in poor taste.
THIRD, the thing that is being SLAMMED at the most, is the improper Spanish grammar and the creator's response to people pointing it out.
In the theme song, the phrase "¡Oye! Primos" is used a lot, which means "Hey cousins!" The issue with this phrase is that "Oye" means hey but in the singular tense, and "Primos" is plural. If you plug in "¡Oye! Primos" to Google translate you'll get Hey Cousins regardless, but in Spanish the phrase is not grammatically correct. In order for it to be grammatically correct the phrase would either need to be changed to "¡Oigan! Primos", "oigan" being the plural word for Hey, or "¡Oye! Primo" and make primo singular. People have been telling this to the creators of the series and well...they haven't exactly been taking it well.
Here's what the voice actress of the main character Tater, Myrna Garcia Velasco said her on social media (Instagram I think, I could be wrong) in response to the bad Spanish:
(If you can't listen to it I'll just summarize. Velasco says that Spanish is the language of the Spanish conquistadors and the only reason why Latinos are LATIN American and not indigenous is because of the Spanish, and to stay mad if you think her incorrect Spanish is an issue. She also brings up how they're "trying to make a good show" for kids who "don't have a grasp on any language" or something?? Idk that's pretty much what she's saying")
Basically this response doesn't make any fucking sense. "Spanish isn't our original language so it doesn't matter if I speak it correctly or not. I'm a NATIVE Mexican so it doesn't matter if I speak Spanish correctly or not"
???????
Girl what the fuck does this mean??? News flash, but the majority of Latin America has been speaking Spanish for CENTURIES. You go to Mexico or most other Latin American countries and you'll find them speaking SPANISH. Yes it's because of the Spanish but it's part of our culture now whether you like it or not. It's like saying "oh it doesn't matter if I speak English correctly or not cause English isn't the US' ORIGINAL language anyway" ?????
Now, the story IS about a mixed kid. Tater is half white half Mexican, so if Tater is a Latina girl who doesn't know Spanish fluently (otherwise known as a "No-Sabo" kid), then the imperfect Spanish would make sense. If the idea behind Primos is to represent the Latin American kids who don't speak Spanish, then yeah thats fine and it was a directoral choice. But judging by Velasco's response, that doesn't seem like thats the idea?? She immediately got defensive and brought up the Spanish colonizers?? Which is relevant??? HOW???
On top of that, one member of the creative team, (not 100% sure who) called someone a "Grammar N@zi" for pointing out the grammatical errors and, well...
That's def not helping their case.
How the HELL are you gonna make show about a Spanish speaking Latin American family and NOT SPEAK SPANISH PROPERLY??? How the HELL are you gonna start beef with SPANISH SPEAKERS over whether or not it's important to speak Spanish CORRECTLY when portraying SPANISH SPEAKING PEOPLE IN MEDIA??? Yes slang exists, yes different LatAm countries speak Spanish differently, but grammar still exists??
OVERALL: Do I think Primos is this horribly racist dumpster fire? No. Are there MANY choices in this show that are just in poor taste? Absolutely 100%. Are the responses from the creative team outta pocket? Yes of course.
If you ask me, I think the main reason why people are so outraged over Primos is because the stereotypes and tropes are tired and dated, and people KNOW what writers are capable of. The response of this teaser, sandwiched between The Owl House ending and the premier of Across the Spiderverse, which have STELLAR LatAm rep, is proof of that. Luz Noceda, Miles Morales and Miguel O'Hara are SHINING examples of good SPANISH SPEAKING LatAm representation in children's media. We CAN have good LatAm protagonists in mediation, we've SEEN IT. We don't need all the stereotypes and overused tropes, so it makes sense why so many LatAm people feel like Primos is offensive and a step backwards.

every time I hear about the oye primos trailer that came out i actually lose my mind, simply because it was so much easier just not to be stereotypical towards Latinos and latinas but they just had to put the breaking bad yellow filter on it, didn't they. they named two of the characters nacho. the place where they live is called terremoto heights. the name of the show is grammatically incorrect.
regardless of the creator's nationality, disrespecting other groups like this and then arguing that there is no better representation out there reeks of bullshit to me

I want to see Namor in the mcu again but I don't know if I can trust anyone else besides Ryan in handling his character and Talokan in general. As long as there's writers of color involved
Your worry and skepticism is valid, considering the track records of the MCU's directors and writers (or rather, what was taken/allowed of the writers and put into the final product).
Coogler is someone who we see actively cares about the authenticity of perspectives, cultures, good writing, and movie making (hence the lack of a green screen). These are some things that are difficult to do when you don't have said people behind the scenes as well.
Other Marvel works that come to mind are: several on the writing team for the show Luke Cage are Black, the director of the show Cloak and Dagger is an Asian woman and the writing team consisted of many Black writers and female writers, and one of the lead directors of Into The Spider-Verse is a Black male who's returning for the sequel, as well as having a Latino male join.
While I haven't yet seen The Eternals, I know that's the only other MCU work directed by a person of color, aside from the last two Thor films; the Eternals is the only current MCU film not directed by a male. And I, for one, hope to see more women of color in charge in the future
That said, I do hope to have more Latines behind the scenes if Talokan does return (like we had for Wakanda Forever)!
Edit: embarrassingly, I forgot that several writers behind the show Falcon Captain America and the Winter Soldier are Black, and the director is female

Okay but can we just talk about the Hispanic/Latino rep in Across The Spider-verse (MINOR SPOILERS )
As someone who's part Latino , I was shocked with how amazing the rep was. It felt like we were being seen but not in like a stereotypical lense but ACTUALLY seen. The people who worked on the film really did their research and it SHOWS
LIKE THE SCOLDING HIS PARENTS (SPECIFICALLY HIS MOTHER) GIVE HIM
MILES GETTING A B IN SPANISH AND HIS PARENTS CALLING HIM OUT (U KNOW UR PART OF A SPANISH FAMILY WHEN THEY'RE ALL CALLING YOU OUT ON HOW WELL U KNOW THE LANGUAGE)
THE DADS CHIEF CEREMONY AND HOW ALL THOSE PEOPLE THERE ARE PRETTY MUCH FAMILY (LIKE HISPANIC/LATINO FAMILIES JUST BEING REALLY HUGE.)
THE TRADITIONAL FOOD THAT MILES GIVES GWEN AND HER ENJOYING IT

I personally think, as a Latino; You're entitled to feel however you like about Lagoona being latina now. Personally, i dislike the change an her portrayal; Even though I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt. I'm not pro calling a latina minor spicy either.
Now, what i ask for the non Hispanic fandom, personally, is to not take the opinion of one person and assume that's the whole truth; I've seen a lot of people post stuff like "GUYS!!! THIS LATINA SAID LAGOONA'S POTRAYAL IS NOT RACIST, SO IT'S NOT RACIST", because
1-. I did see the video, and though I agreed for the most part, they were still things that made me feel odd
2-. Latinos are a diverse group of different nationalities and opinions; Trying to fit the truth into one girl's opinion is extremely reductive.
Perhaps instead of utilizing the arguments of different Latinos as your our weapon and tool of self validation. Sit down and listen, and try to make the best out of the conversation, because really, it's not the place for non Hispanic people to give their opinion on the matter; or rather, you do not have the authority to speak.
Obviously, i do not hold the truth either, but it's getting really tiring hearing the argument of "My friend is Hispanic and they said it's not racist!". Like, come on; We are not one unit. If someone asks you to tone it down, or that it makes them feel uncomfortable, please do comply.
