The eager waiter

Written for @hinnymicrofic, 10 July: Kind

The waiter arrived at their table for the third time since they had arrived at the restaurant. Every time Harry looked back at the menu, he showed up.

“The appetisers are on the house,” he said with a bit of a bow as he put the plate down. “Such an honour to have both of you here.”

“You are too kind,” Ginny told him politely.

“My pleasure, my pleasure,” he said eagerly. “If you need anything, I’ll be right over there.”

“Thanks,” Harry said. “We’ll let you know when we’re ready to order.” He watched the waiter walk away but kept glancing their way every few seconds.

Ginny inhaled sharply and shared a telling look with Harry. “He’s intense.”

“Really?” Harry told her with a grin. “I hadn’t noticed.”

She looked back down at the menu. “Should’ve agreed to go to a muggle restaurant like you suggested.”

Harry finally got a chance to look at the starters. “You should have. He is watching us like a hawk and drawing all the attention to us. I can’t even propose here, your parents would read it in the Evening Prophet before we could make it home.” He flipped the page to look at the main courses.

There was a beat of silence. “Are you planning to propose?” Ginny asked softly.

He looked up to see her smile eagerly at him, her face bright. He shrugged shyly, fiddling with the menu. “Been meaning to but I never seem to find the right time. I don’t think this is it.”

She snorted. “He may faint from excitement,” Ginny said with a nod towards the waiter.

“Ah,” Harry said. “It isn’t a proper proposal unless someone faints.” He smiled at her again.

Ginny shook her head. “George’s proposal was way over the top.”

“Angelina didn’t seem to think so,” he replied.

“That’s why they’re made for each other,” Ginny said.

Harry hummed in agreement. “Indeed...” He locked eyes with her. “Now that I have given you a head’s up, you can think of your response until I find the right moment to do it.”

Ginny tilted her head. “Harry...” She shook her head softly. “What do you think?”

He looked at her warningly. “Don’t tell me! You’re going to take all the fun out of asking.”

She grinned and looked down at her menu. “Alright.”

They exited the restaurant and Ginny looked up in surprise as an owl flew towards them. Harry held out his hand so it could land there.

“Auror stuff?” Ginny asked with concern.

Harry plucked the letter from its leg and looked. “No.” He shook his head with a slight frown. “It’s from your parents. They said they have urgent news but not to worry.”

“That is worrying,” Ginny let out.

Harry nodded. “I know. Let’s go over there and see what’s going on.”

He let her go first as they walked into The Burrow. It was quiet in the house.

Ginny walked into the living room. “Mum? Dad?”

Suddenly several people appeared from behind couches and doors. “Surprise!”

Ginny stalled, confused. “It’s not my birthday, is it?”

Harry got down on his knee just in time for her to turn around.

She gasped and smiled happily. “... You planned this.” She looked around at her family and dearest friends looking on eagerly.

“Did I miss it?” George’s voice came from behind him. Harry looked up to see the waiter enter as he rapidly morphed back into George.

Ginny looked back at him in utter surprise, and he smiled at her. “Will you marry me?”

Ginny nibbled on the end of her pencil, thinking hard.

Harry thought she looked adorable doing that. He didn’t understand her fascination with doing the Daily Prophet crosswords, but he was absolutely fascinated by watching her do them.

“Class C Non-Tradeable whose shoots, bites, spikes and juice are venomous,” She said aloud. “What do you think, Harry?”

“I’m not Neville, Gin,” he said dryly, but then last month’s case of plant smuggling came to mind. “But try ‘Tentacula’.”

She hummed as she counted the boxes and scribbled in them. “You’re right. Thanks, love.” She leaned over to peck his cheek.

He grinned as he sipped his coffee. He loved their lazy mornings before they had to rush to the department or practice. “No problem.”

“Hmm. . .” She frowned at the next hint, seconds later. “Synonym for ‘flawless’. Seven letters.” She made a triumphant. “Oh, I’ve got it! It’s—”

“Ginevra,” he finished, smirking.

Ginny turned to him and raised an eyebrow. “I’d be upset at being called by my full name if you hadn’t just labelled me perfect.” She was grinning, but she turned solemn quickly. “Harry, you know I’m not perfect.”

“I know you aren’t,” he agreed easily. “You’re hot tempered, vicious, stubborn, and. . . Well, you know how I am.”

“Oblivious, guarded, angry, obsessive?” She said with a smirk.

“Yeah, those things,” they both chuckled. Harry, deciding there wasn’t a better time, feeling his body thrum with nerves, went down on one knee. Ginny gaped.

“Ginny, it’s you and me. It’s you and me, now and forever. We may not be perfect individually, but we can try to make our lives as perfect as they can be, together. I vow to choose you, to support you, to argue and make up with you, to love you every day of the rest of our lives, as I already do, if you let me. Want to make it official?”

“Of course I do,” she said softly, smile nearly blinding. Harry stood up and they kissed, long and deep. The sheer amount of happiness he felt made his head spin, dizzy with joy. “What about a ring?” She asked curiously, cocking her head to the side.

“You can get out your own ring,” Harry grinned. “You know, the one you were planning on proposing – I hope to me – with? I found it.”

Ginny slapped his chest gently, pouting. “First of all, damn you for stealing my thunder.”

“Ouch, Gin, that hurts,” he said, mock pained. “I didn’t steal your thunder! I found it last week! How is it my fault you didn’t propose in that time and I decided this was a good time for me to do it?”

He knew perfectly well he could have waited for the time Ginny wanted to do it, and a part of him did regret that he would now never know the experience she had planned, but well. . . For him, this had been the perfect time. He couldn’t wait any longer. He loved Ginny more than anything, and knowing she wanted to spend the rest of her life with him both honoured and thrilled him enough to be impatient about it.

Anyway, she just ignored his protests.

“Secondly, you’re the most socially oblivious person I know. How in Merlin’s name did you find the ring or know I was going to propose?” She asked incredulously.

“Hey, I’m not that bad,” Harry said defensively. She snorted. “Okay, fine, whatever. I found it when I was humouring Hermione’s latest cleanliness fad. You remember she was going on and on about cobwebs and corners. You’d left the ring in the corner of the bookshelf, so while I was dusting there. . .”

He shrugged. It had actually been a really good hiding place, because neither of them was an avid reader, and Ginny, who always used spells in household work, would probably not have imagined that even if Harry got it in his head to clean that space, he would do it the muggle way rather than with magic. But Harry had grown up Muggle, and for cooking and cleaning, he liked to revert to that.

Ginny sighed. “I cannot believe I forgot you like to do stuff like that the Muggle way,” she muttered to herself. “Or that you actually follow Hermione’s obsessions.”

He shrugged, putting his hands in his pockets. “She’s my best friend.”

“Fair,” Ginny grinned. “Let’s go get the ring.”

“How were you going to propose?” He asked as she got out the ring. Harry smiled at that small life-changing box, feeling happiness in that space of his chest instead of sadness or bitterness or grief, like he usually did with Ginny and his friends.

“Honestly, I wasn’t fully decided. I considered making a really huge deal, like after one of my matches, but I wasn’t sure how you’d feel about a public proposal like that—”

“As long as it was you, I would have been fine,” he insisted. He didn’t like the public scrutiny of him or their relationship, but about their engagement, on their own terms, as long as it was Ginny. . . It sounded amazing.

“You’re sweet,” she said, and kissed his cheek. “Otherwise, I thought about going with you when you guest lecture at Hogwarts, and taking you to one of our old haunts in the name of reminiscing and letting you find the ring there.”

“Wow,” he laughed wryly. “You’re a lot better at this thing than I am.”

“I wouldn’t say this was at all bad,” she smiled at him, eyes sparkling. “You did start with saying I’m perfect, after all. Better keep up the compliments, Potter.”

“Oh, not a problem at all, Weasley.” He looked at the ring she’d slipped onto his finger. It glistened in the light. It was gorgeous. Ginny knew his tastes exactly. “Or soon to be Mrs. Potter. Want an engagement ring too? We can go buy one together. I do not know your ring size.”

“Sure,” she said, admiring the ring on his finger too. “And yes, I will be taking your name.”

“Cool.” He felt his smile was far too large for his continued health. They kissed. “The ring is perfect, Gin.”

“Like me?” She teased, and he groaned playfully. Clearly, he was never hearing the end of that. “Mum’s going to go ballistic.”

Harry winced, remembering how insane Mrs. Weasley had gotten in the lead-up to Bill and Fleur’s wedding. He really did not want to go through that again, this time in context of him and Ginny.

“If we wouldn’t want our whole family there, I’d say we ought to elope,” Ginny sighed wistfully. Harry wished they wouldn’t have to make a whole to-do about it too. Then suddenly an idea struck him. “What if we could elope with all our family and friends there?”

Here's a little hint at the first 6 epilogues...

Many of them occur at the same time and time jump lots in each chapter so not everything is in chronological order.

31 - Hinny Epilogue One:

Molly looked slightly put out by this before she turned her gaze on Harry and Ginny. “And what about you two? Two years you’ve just celebrated and what have you to show for it?”

Ginny bit her lip before she exchanged a look with Harry. “Actually, Mum, Harry and I do have some news to share.”

Molly shrieked, jumping up from the table. “Oh my goodness! I knew it! I knew it! I’m so happy! Oh, Ginny!”

Ginny was pulled into her mother’s arms before she could say anything otherwise and squeezed tightly. “Mum!”

“Oh, Ginny, you’re going to be such a good mum! I just know you two are going to have boy! I can feel it!” Molly exclaimed, tightening her grip on her daughter.

Harry cleared his throat. “Erm, Molly, we —”

“—and you!” Molly said, throwing her arms around Harry. “A baby! This calls for a celebration!”

“MUM!” Ginny shouted, making Molly turn to look at her. “I’m not pregnant.”

Molly’s face fell. “Not pregnant? What do you mean by telling me that you are!”

“I didn’t,” Ginny said. “I said that we had some news to share.”

32 - Luna Epilogue...

“I don’t like him,” Harry said again, crossing his arms in front of his chest. “She was bloody starkers when he met her, Gin! This bloke is dodgy, I can feel it! I don’t like him.”

“You do, actually,” Ginny said, her eyes twinkling. “In fact you like him very much.” At Harry’s look, she smiled. “His name is Rolf Scamander.”

“Rolf Sc — bloody hell,” Harry grumbled.

“He’s very nice, Harry,” Luna said. “We’ve been together most of the last two and half months. He makes me laugh and he’s kind. When he kisses me, I feel things that I’ve never felt before and he doesn’t seem to mind that I need a lot of foreplay to make me come. In fact, he rather enjoys spending time between my legs. Ginny, one night I came five times.”

Ginny chuckled. “He’s definitely a keeper.”

“Erm, sure,” Harry said, the back of his neck reddening. “I’ll leave you two to talk more.” He stood up and walked over to kiss Luna’s cheek. “If he hurts you, I’ll kill him.”

Luna gave Harry an amused look. “You know I can take care of myself, right?”

“Just pass it on,” Harry said, kissing her cheek again. “No one messes with you or they answer to me.”

“He gives me the best orgasms, I’m going to keep him for a bit.”

“Er, right,” Harry said.

33 - Theo Epilogue One...

"Theo, will you —”

"YES!"

Sebastian's lips curved. "You didn't even let me ask you.”

"Right, sorry," Theo said. "Try again.”

"Will you —”

“YES!" he squealed, biting his bottom lip. “Sorry. One more time, l'll be quiet, I swear.”

Sebastian beamed at him. "Will you marry —“

"YES!" Theo shouted, falling to his knees in front of Sebastian to kiss him. "A million times yes!!”

Sebastian kissed him back fervently. "You know, I had a plan here. I didn't even get to show you the ring.”

Theo kissed him, speaking in between more kisses. "Don't care. More kissing.”

34 - Romione Epilogue One...

Ron waved his mum off. “Nothing much, Mum, except for one thing — I’m calling for a vote. I think we can all agree that I’m the Weasley who gave the most romantic proposal ever, right?”

Fred snorted. “Pretty sure that’s a lie. No way was ickle Ronnikins the most romantic.”

“Nothing from you,” Ron said. “You haven’t even proposed to your girlfriend.”

Fred stuck his tongue out at his brother. “Git.”

“I don’t know,” Ginny said, smiling at her husband. “Harry set up a romantic picnic before we went for a fly on his broom. Then he wrote me a cheesy poem while he proposed during the sunset. That’s definitely up there for mad romance.”

Ron waved her off. “Yeah, yeah, Harry’s a contender! But I definitely beat out Percy!”

“I thought the ring in the champagne glass was very classy,” Percy said, pushing his glasses up his nose.

“It was,” Audrey said, tapping her husband’s cheek. “He took me out to a romantic dinner and told me how much he loved me. It was perfect.”

“I don’t know,” George said. “I think I win, I mean, I got Ange to propose to me.”

Angelina laughed. “And it worked for us, but I wouldn’t exactly call it romantic, George.”

George gasped. “How dare you! You even gave me this gawdy ring!” he exclaimed, wiggling his hand with the pirate ring on his finger.

Angelina picked up his other hand, the one that held his gold wedding band. “I love this one more.”

He grinned. “I’m a kept man and I like it.”

“Wait,” Ginny said, holding up her hands. “Ron keeps going on about how he had the most romantic proposal, but I don’t think we’ve even heard how he proposed.”

“What’s important, Ginny, is that I win!” Ron declared.

35 - Hinny Epilogue Two...

Harry kissed the top of her head. “Gin, if this is what you want, you know that I’m going to support you. You don’t have to work at all if you don’t want to.”

“I know,” Ginny said, tracing her fingertips into the groove of his abs. “I think maybe I’d like to do something else eventually, but I think that when it gets closer, I’ll think more about it. I just want to spend more time with our children and enjoy them, you know?”

Harry kissed the top of her head. “Whatever you want to do.”

Ginny’s fingers trailed a bit lower to squeeze him. “Then after I retire, maybe we can try for that magical number four?”

“Yeah?” he asked, a little breathlessly. “One more baby?”

“One more,” Ginny agreed. “I think four is the perfect number, don’t you?”

Her thumb brushed under the head of his cock and his breath hitched. “Yeah, that sounds perfect. Let’s try for another girl. Two and two, you know?”

Ginny smiled, slowly kissing her way down his chest. She dragged her tongue over him, sneaking a look at him under her lashes. “After I retire.”

“Deal,” he murmured and then her mouth wrapped around him and Harry watched her in awe, falling more in love with her all over again.

36 - Blaise Epilogue...

“I don’t even want to get married,” Blaise insisted. “I’m working my dream job. I have more money than I even know what to do with. I can buy whatever clothes I want, travel wherever I want, and bloody shag whomever I bloody want… why would I want to settle down? Seems boring.”

Theo sighed. “One of these days, Blaise Zabini, some witch is going to turn her nose up at you and you won’t know what to do about it.”

Blaise laughed. “Please. I’m everyone’s fantasy.”

Sebastian snorted. “His ego’s still working just fine, I see.”

Blaise grinned. “And you two love me for it.”

“Well, instead of your ego, can we talk about our plan for Paris?” Sebastian asked.

Theo pouted. “It’s not fair that you both get to go to Paris and I have to stay here.”

“You have to work,” Sebastian told him.

“And we’ll be working,” Blaise cut in. “You and your team are taking over all of the investigation, am I right?”

“Yes,” Sebastian said. “D, J, and I will keep track of it all and let you know what we find. You’re only defending Lavigne, correct?”

“Yeah, but from what I’ve heard, it’s causing a rift in the Ministry.”

“And then some,” Sebastian agreed. “My team is heading there tomorrow afternoon and as soon as know something, I’ll touch base.”

“Appreciate it,” Blaise told him. “Now, let’s chat about what kind of outrageous gift we can get Draco before I head off to Paris to shag my way around the city.”

Theo turned to look at his husband. “Why do we keep inviting him over?”

“Because you love him, baby.”

Theo wrinkled his nose. “It’s bloody inconvenient that that’s true.”

Blaise laughed and clinked his wine glass with Theo’s. “I’ll drink to that.”

Thank you for this question anon! I was so excited when I saw it pop into my askbox.

I Know Places

I think this one is so post war Hinny. Like after the war and Harry saving the wizarding world (again), he becomes even more famous than he already is and Ginny becomes a famous Quidditch. (I would argue she surpasses Harry's fame.) So, people are always prying into their business and trying to figure out what's going on in their private lives, and I think they get very good and very creative at hiding themselves in plain sight.

Red (Taylor's Version)

This is Ginny in the middle of the war. Because if you thought that Ginny didn't think about Harry while he was gone, you are wrong. I also think it describes Harry's thoughts perfectly. Plus the angst of this song fits so well with Hinny.

Lover

Peak Hinny post war and pre kids. I imagine them slow dancing to this song after a New Year's party. (Don't ask me why; that's just what pops into my head.) I think it's the first time that Harry seriously considers proposing to her. He buys a ring the next day and keeps it hidden for six months.

Everything Has Changed (Taylor's Version)

Very much HPB Harry realizing his feelings for Ginny. It's delicate and sweet, which I don't think is always depicted or thought about. I really think that Harry lets down his walls completely for Ginny, and they share a lot during that short time they're together.

The Great War

I put this one on here purely for the aesthetics. 'knuckles bruised like violets' gets me every time, and I'm thinking about Hinny. Like I feel like this song was written especially for them. And Ginny is in the back of Harry's mind constantly throughout DH (if I'm wrong, don't correct me. I haven't read the books in forever.) and I just think this fits so well. I also like the metaphor of constantly reaching for her hand.

The concept of the farmer's market was something that the whole of the Wizarding World in the United Kingdom had stolen from the Muggle World and everyone quickly fell in love with the idea. The farmer's market currently resided down the high street of Diagon Alley and was the perfect time for all of the families that were shopping for the new year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. However, what Pansy hadn't expected was to find a tall and rugby-built Neville Longbottom running a stall and being the exact image of what Pansy's ideal partner was.

Some modern au headcanons

Mike played Ted and Karen against each other one Christmas and got two iPhones. Purely so he could give one of them to Jane.

Jane loves the spy kids and shrek franchises. Most for Antonio Banderas.

Dustin roped Steve and Max into watching supernatural with him. Dustin watches it for the lore. Steve watched it for the car and the ladies. Max watches it for Jared Padalecki. None of them like the roadkill in the trench coat though

Lucas in the only on in the party who can cook competently if he has to. Max can work a water tap. Dustin can shake down a vending machine. Mike can make waffles. Jane can eat the waffles. Will can burn toast

Will’s most watched film on Netflix and Disneyplus is the Peanuts movie. He sees Charlie Brown as a kindred spirit.

Jim’s a fan of classics. Colombo. MacGyver. Hawaii 5-0. Not the remakes though. Just the originals. He’s also a big fan of the law and order franchise

Joyce is a big fan of old sitcoms like the golden girls and Mary Tyler Moore.

Nancys favourite Disney film is sleeping beauty. And yes. Her and Jonathan have gone as Aurora and Phillip for Halloween. Twice.

Robin and Steve play wingman for each other when they go out and meet girls.

Max is trying to teach Lucas skate boarding. In return. He’s trying to teach her how to cook. Neither endeavour has been very successful. Yet

Will and Jonathan shared a room after Jim and Jane moved in before Jonathan moved in with Nancy. Now Will shares with Max.

It’s an open secret that Karen and Ted are far from just the social drinkers they claim to be.

Erica’s role models growing up were DW Read and Angelica Pickles. But are any of you really surprised?

Max’s dark secret is she has a bureau full of minions merchandise

The Hargrove’s doesn’t exist. Max is a Hopper just like Jane.

It’s an unspoken agreement between Nancy, Mike and Lucas that if both Ted and Karen die before Mike’s 18th then the Sinclair’s can adopt Mike if they so choose.

Dustin in the only one with tumblr. He’s got a enough blocked tags to fill Notre Dame up to Emanuel.

Steve’s a driving instructor. Dustin’s his only successful student.

Joyce and Jim are married with their four kids. Jonathan, Will, Jane and Max.

Mike makes it no secret that his favourite out of Nancy’s peer group is Jonathan. Jane’s is Argyle. Will’s is Robin. Dustin’s is Steve. Lucas and Max’s is Nancy.

Dustin and Will the only two who actively enjoy the muppets. Mike like the Simpsons. Jane likes Futurama. Lucas likes Friends. And Max likes new girl

Lucas is a whovian (the Clara era specifically). Max only watches Star Wars for Finn. Jane got Mike interested in Star Trek. Dustin and Will are Harry Potter fans. They’re both hinny and romione shippers so there’s very little arguments.

The Byers have a dog. The Henderson’s have several cats. The Wheelers have a hamster. The Sinclair’s have a horse.

Jane and Mike are speed dial number one on each other’s phone’s.

There’s no upside down and no Brenner. But Jane still has telekinesis. Except without the nosebleed’s.

Robin’s a big musical fan. But the only way she got Steve to watch them with her is by telling him about what the women look like.

Nancy found herself uncomfortably attracted to Skimbleshanks when she watched Cats 2019

Jane convinced Mike to watch once upon a time. Mike likes Emma. Jane likes Killian. They both hate Regina. And they both think Henry should’ve had more magic than he did.

Jonathan and Nancy are only living together. But Mike still calls Jonathan his brother in law. Half because it makes Ted go puce. Half because he’s already planning their wedding. He’s even gotten Holly in on it.

And last but not least. Lonnie’s dead. Car crash. No-one misses him. Joyce only went to the funeral out of respect for his mother. Jim proposed at the wake.

Christmas Eve Proposal

Ginny sighed. “Harry… you know I don’t like surprises…”

“You will like this one,” he said, stepping away from her. “I mean I sure hope you will.” He paused for a moment. “Close your eyes and no peeking. If you cheat I will know.”

Harry looked at her so softly, so she gave in. She closed her eyes and then put her hands in front of her face for good measure so she definitely wouldn’t be tempted to sneak a glance. She stood, a little impatiently, halfway the living room. She could hear Harry walk around for a moment and some lights went off and others on and she could hear the light tinkling of the Christmas lights, as if he had walked into them.

“Can I open my eyes?” Ginny asked when it was silent for a moment.

“Just a second,” Harry’s voice came.

He walked back up to her. The floor slightly creaked as Harry moved again.

“You can open them.” Harry’s voice came from much lower than she expected.
