Friendly Fire - Prologue

Ellie Thibodeaux holds arguably the worst job in Bridgehead City. She’s not a cook. She’s not even a cleaner. She’s the resident RDA psychiatrist, and her next assignment is helping the formerly deceased Project Phoenix come to terms with being brought back to life as an entirely different species.

Enter Colonel Miles Quaritch, the most reluctant, and most challenging patient she’s ever had the displeasure of treating.

| Chapter 1

Prologue

Dead man walking!

That was what the RDA soldiers had yelled in her direction as she stepped off the Valkyrie onto Pandoran soil late last year.

She tried to walk proudly into the buildings of Bridgehead City, with her head held high and her back straight. It was easier in the lower gravity. Intimidation might work on greenhorns, but it wasn’t going to work on her.

She’d already been through more in her life than any of them would ever know.

“This better than Earth.” Ellie struggled to convince herself as she got used to breathing with an exopack for the first time. “It has to be.”

A second chance. A second life. Wasn’t that a saying amongst the natives? That you were born twice?

Ellie dug that. She’d take all the chances she could get.

Six years of cryosleep for this. She was guaranteed Paradise, back on Earth when she signed on with the RDA. Instead, all she ever saw of Pandora was infrastructure, concrete and steel.

None of the greenery, impossible colours and bioluminescence her orientation literature had promised. It was too dangerous, apparently. The local tribes were still referred to as hostiles. The RDA had tried, and failed, to tame Pandora.

Her world was brown, grey and that disgusting khaki green she had grown to hate. Same colour as the food she was served in the canteen every damn day.

Bridgehead was plenty hostile as it was.

She didn’t fit with the two main factions in Bridgehead. Not a soldier, neither a scientist.

A goddamn shrink. That was what everyone called her. Intellectuals and hired thugs alike. They didn’t think she was useful, or necessary. She didn’t study the native wildlife or know how to handle a gun. She didn’t speak Na’vi. Practically useless in survival situations.

“Tibbs!”

General Ardmore caught her attention after breakfast. Ellie didn’t like the older woman much, she was a textbook narcissist, but fortunately she wasn’t paid her generous annual salary to like people. That would cost you extra.

“Guess who woke up yesterday?”

Ellie silently stared at the name on the file in Ardmore’s hand. She’d heard the stories, which by now seemed more like legends passed down through the generations of human settlers. This particular soldier, and future patient of hers, was the one member of Project Phoenix she was least looking forward to meeting.

He had quite the reputation. Even from beyond the figurative grave.

“That’s right, sweetheart-“ Ardmore grinned widely at the pained expression on her face. “Colonel Miles Quaritch, back from the dead.”

General bio:

An aspiring artist and musician in hell, Jaiden follows the beat of her own drum. While not quite as bull-headed and daring as her mother, Jaiden is easy company to get along with and can enjoy a good laugh every now and then. She’s actually rather intelligent and crafty, something she shares in common with her dad. This often put a barrier between herself and her mother growing up as Cherri found it hard to bond with her, so Jaiden tends to keep that side of her hidden, the only ones who have truly seen Jaiden’s more dorky, natural side are Blaze and Kai, her two closest friends and band members

Growing up with a single mum who often hopped from place to place, Jaiden is used to travelling and likes to spend her time wandering about Hell, where she eventually picked up spray painting as a hobby to pass the time when she wasn’t practising guitar. Jaiden has learnt to be independent and as such is not greatly social, her friend circle is actually quite small, but Jaiden is fine with that. She’s the type of person who is fine with just chilling with a friend quietly or jamming out with them - often it’s the latter

Outside of art and playing guitar Jaiden enjoys things like fashion and dying her hair, it’s one of the things her and her mother bond the strongest over

Relationships:

Cherri has had many one night stands in Hell, the only thing close to a relationship she had was in her past life before she died, which left her cautious and untrustworthy of others. Pentious had secretly always had a bit of a puppy crush on Cherri, Cherri found this hilarious and endlessly funny - which ultimately led to her becoming pregnant with Jaiden. By this point Cherri had long since gotten bored of playing cat and mouse with Pentious and was totally on her own. Cherri turned to Angel, one of the few people she trusted whole heartedly. Angel helps her out as best she can till Cherri takes up temporary residence at the hotel until Jaiden is born. Cherri tries to go back to her old life of hopping about from place to place, but that’s hard to do with a crying baby that demands your total attention 24/7. After joining the band Resist and staying at the hotel permanently Cherri begins to learn how to be a better mum

It wasn’t until the toddler stages did Cherri begin to have some fun with parenting - Jaiden is a clingy child, having only Cherri as her parent. She and Cherri rough house and mess around a lot as their form of bonding, which sometimes meant Jaiden didn’t get to do some of the more girly or goofy things she enjoyed, Cherri tried to enjoy them though, even if sometimes she wasn’t very good. Now that Jaiden is older and depends on her mum less she’s able to enjoy more of her personal hobbies with close friends, she’s still close to her mum as she is the only biological family she has left, she was cautious of Vaggie at first when her mum said they where dating, but Jaiden is more chill now knowing her mum’s happy

Jaiden is slightly protective of her mum, so she wasn’t all that thrilled when she learnt that her mum and Vaggie were dating, unlike Iridescence. However Jaiden quickly warmed up to her - Vaggie is actually quite a loving parent, while often she is patient and reasonable with rules, Cherri has taught her to loosen up a little and she has become better at showing her appreciation for her family. Riley is a-okay with this attention, since Cherri and her often rough housed as their form of affection Jaiden quite enjoys a pat on the shoulder or a hug every now and then

Tristan and Riley are often dubbed babysitters by their mothers or Angel as both are good with the younger kids in the hotel, they have a lot more in common then people believe. Jaiden feels like she can let down her walls and be her more silly self, just a little, when around Tristan who finds her easier to get along with than Cherri. When Jaiden showed an interest in dark magic Tristan was the one who helped her find some books on the subject, when the two hang out they can often be found enjoying their respective books in silence

Her two closest friends are Blaze and Kai. Jaiden met Blaze when she was 5 when Millie had invited Cherri round for a big party to celebrate the birth of the twins at Millie’s parents house, Crash and Dash, Blaze was also there and was pretty bored since Moxxie said he couldn’t make too much noise since the twins where small and needed quite. Jaiden and Blaze ended up playing in the hog pen with the piglets before they got pulled out by their parents, caked in mud. The two met Kai a few years later at a gathering they had all been invited too. Blaze asked for Jaiden to tag along so they could hang out, the party was mostly for the adults to mingle, the two found Kai hiding off in a corner avoiding the acitivities, where he was persuaded to join Jaiden and Blaze when they tempted him with some vanilla ice cream

Jaiden tries to be a good big sister to Nidra, she worries she isn’t that great or that she could be doing better, but their bond is actually very close. When Jaiden learnt Nidra was into black magic Jaiden could not understand why, but she started reading up on the topic as best she could to try and form a bond with Nidra. Nidra’s relationship with Pentious is strained at best, Nidra felt more like a tool for Pentious to live his life through, even when Pentious becomes better and settles down with Arackniss Nidra still remains at the hotel. Jaiden is determined to be apart of her sisters life in some way, which can sometimes lead to her being a bit overbearing or overly nosy in Nidra’s hobbies. They bicker like normal sisters do, but Jaiden does her best to be patient. Out of everyone, Nidra is the one she is the most patient and understanding with, she truly doesn’t like to get angry at her

Fun facts:

-Jaiden wears a red pendant choker at all times, even when sleeping. All demons have the natural ability to shapeshift into humans, but only powerful demons have the ability to alter their demon forms. Jaiden was born a naga like Pentious and found it hard to get about the hotel when she was little, climbing the stairs was a bit of a challenge. Magic pendants to help demons shapeshift are not uncommon in hell but they are very hard to come by unless you can either enchant one yourself (which takes a great level of skill) or you are of royal blood and have easy access to them. With a bit of help from Vaggie Cherri was able to get her hands on one of these pendants and gave it to Jaiden. Jaiden prefers walking over slithering, she’ll only ever take her pendant off if she’s feeling especially relaxed

-Jaiden has a pet silkie chicken called Mayhem. She’s a big fan of birds, big, giant, fluffy, feathery ones. Mayhem can often be found following Jaiden around, staring into space, attacking Jaiden’s shoe laces, or sitting in a nest of her clothes in her room

-Jaiden and her mother have a lot of differences, one of those being how the two cope with attraction. Cherri can be fairly confident with flirting and isn’t shy to do so either, mostly for kicks and giggles. Jaiden can flirt too and likes to think of herself as fairly charming, but the tides can turn against her quickly. She gets flustered easily, like Sir Pentious, and sometimes does something silly/awkward because she doesn’t know how to respond

-Jaiden helped Brinda come out of the closest as Bisexual. Brinda had been crushing on Jaiden for a few months before she just confronted Jaiden and told her how she felt, and how she also felt very unsure and nervous. Jaiden offers to be Brinda’s girlfriend so that she can test the waters. Brinda is a shy adorable clutz and though they only dated for a few weeks and left on friendly terms, Jaiden still has a soft spot for her
