Ōka-sai, Hirano Shrine by Discover Kyoto

When the capital was established in Kyoto in 794, Hirano Shrine has long enjoyed prosperous relationship with the Imperial family, and the two Samurai factions, the Genji and the Heike, that served them.

A sakura festival has occurred at the shrine every single year since 985, for over a thousand years. This makes it the oldest festival in Kyoto that can claim to have continued unbroken for that long.

Heike Festival by Visit Miyazaki

In Shiiba Village, which is known as one of Japan's Three Unexplored Regions, a festival called the Heike Festival is held every November, based on a story that has been passed down for about 840 years.

This festival is based on the tragic love story between Princess Tsurutomi, a descendant of the Heike clan, and Nasu Daihachiro, a military commander of the Minamoto clan – two rival families.

“ Role model? “

Adarna sighed as she cleaned her hair to remove the glue and feathers. Novio had pranked her, and apparently was taking pictures of her misfortune. As she washed herself, she thought of different ways to possibly make him pay.

She sighed, he was a Special Circuit fighter and she was just the first placer of the Major Circuit. What could she possibly do? She couldn’t even reach Champion…

Lost in her thoughts, she started roughly combing her hair, with a blank look staring at herself in the mirror. “You’re weak, You’re weak.” She muttered to herself, her combing became more aggressive, a few strands of hair falling.

“You don’t have the guts to stand up to Novio… What makes you think you’ll be a good role model?” She told herself, the words piercing into her self-esteem. Her eyes welled up with tears. She sighed as she covered her eyes. “Bakit ako ganito…” She muttered, gripping her hair tightly.

Kagero was walking around the WVBA locker rooms, they heard someone shouting and decided to check up on them. They saw Adarna in one of the locker rooms, they looked at her hair which was ruined due to a prank. “Novio…” Heike muttered.

Heike went towards her and tapped her shoulder. “Leo, are you okay?” They asked her. “Ay, Heike.. Sorry you had to see me like this..” She said, smiling weakly. Heike pressed their lips into a thin line.

“Was it Novio?” They asked, helping her out with the feathers. She nodded. “He dropped some glue and feathers on me, and this dumb sign!” She snapped the string of the sign and threw it inside the trash can.

Heike stared at the ‘CHICKEN’ sign with a furrowed brow. They patted her shoulder, and helped with the glue. “Could I vent to you real quick, Kagero?” She asked them.

Heike nodded. “Of course, I’m all ears.” They answered, combing her hair with their fingers. “Thank you, really.” Adarna said, sighing.

“I’m not strong enough.. I couldn’t even stand up to Novio, Mika did it for me..” She smiled at the actions of the Filipina Boxer. “Like, I’m a part of the Woman’s Major Circuit.. Yet I can’t even save my own ass when someone pranks me..” Adarna sniffled.

Heike patted her back. “Well, why didn’t you hit Novio? He surely deserved it!” They asked her. “I was going to, until he got out that damn phone…” She weakly said. “I thought hitting him out of the ring would ruin my reputation, you know?” She continued. “My career would be ruined.. ‘Woman Boxer hits Special Circuit fighter!’ You know the bias of the WVBA…” Adarna growled as she acted out quotation marks.

She recalled the situation to Heike,who listened intently. She was just minding her own business in the WVBA lounge. When suddenly someone called out to her, it was Novio. She paid him no mind until she heard the sloshing of liquid inside a bucket, she turned around and suddenly he went and threw the contents on her with no remorse.

Adarna’s breath hitched as the glue dripped on the floor. Tears were threatening to leave her eyes as she glared at the perpetrator. Novio smirked. “Awwww, such a pretty birdie… You like the new makeover?” He teased, putting a derogatory sign on her which said “CHICKEN”.

Adarna let out short breaths. “ Bakit ka ganito?!” She shouted at him, balling her fists in rage. Novio’s sneer grew wider before pulling up his phone, assaulting her eyes with a bright light. “Awww, cutie! Smile for the camera, dear!” He cackled. “My adoring fans could see this live!” He continued, (Why are you like this?!)

She covered her eyes, and looked at phone. Her eyes widened as she tried to catch her breath. Her heart pounded, she was clinging on her shortening breaths. Her chest and stomach hurt, and she was sweating a storm.

Her fists felt numb and she dropped to her knees. “Ikaw….” She muttered, out of breath. She was making a fool of herself on camera, fat tears falling from her face. (You…)

Luckily, Star Mika came to help her. She sprayed mace on his eyes, causing him to drop his phone. But the damage had already been done. As Novio laid on the floor, trying to get rid of the mace, Mika helped her get up and control her breathing.

“And, yeah. That’s what happened.” Adarna said, tearing up. Heike had a worried face, and hugged her. “That was such an asshole move! I’m so sorry Novio did that to you…” They said to her, Adarna widened her eyes again, and she hugged back. “Thank you…” She said, burying her face in their hair.

“How about I’ll treat you to something, to get that asshole off your mind?” Heike suggested. “I’d love to, bestie!” Adarna said, teasingly. The two laughed as they left the locker room.
