i don’t know why but i mostly don’t feel attracted to any actors/celebrities. i do feel attracted to some characters that actors play but i feel weird and adverse about being attracted to the actors themselves. I have no idea why.

Poison into Positivity: A List of What I Liked in OFMD S2
Hello hello everyone! Things have been a little rough around here. Even away from the more heated takes, I've still seen a few "down in the dumps" murmurs. To which, I'm giving y'all big hugs, but also offering up some little bits of warmth! I wanted to share quite a few bullets of the things I enjoyed about this season. Maybe it'll serve as a reminder, or maybe it'll just serve as a chaotic, silly little read as per usual PFFF.
But I invite you to read along, and even add some of your own points should you feel inclined! Also, this might not even be my full list; these are just the ones that came to me quickly/off the top of my head. Still, let's dive on down like a fantastical, dazzling goldfish, shall we?
All the callbacks/parallels. My goodness. When I tell you I'm a SLUT for metaphors/parallels/callbacks/etc etc. Seeing so many things and being able to just *Leonardo Dicaprio pointing meme.* I know people might not share that same opinion because some might view it to be excessive, but I personally LOVED being able to point at my screen and be like "oH EYYYYYYY!!!" Maybe because it makes for such immaculate gifset/meta material <3 SJKJDLHSK
The costuming and makeup. WHEN THEY TALKED AT ECCC ABOUT EVERYONE GETTING HOTTER, THEY WERE NOT KIDDING LMAO. EVERYONE LOOKED SO, SO GOOD. and listen, i am on my knees begging for them to give ed with his hair up back to us. i need Her back,,,ALSO, SOMETHING SOMETHING COMPLICATED EMOTIONS TOWARDS STEDE'S LATTER HALF LOOK, BUT ALSO...GOD DAMN, MR. DARBY,,,,,,
Speaking of Mr. Darby, the acting in this season. The ACTTTINNNGG. Everyone acted their ASSES off. Everyone put their entire piratussies into this season. Though, I'm PARTICULARLY impressed with Taika and Rhys, because again with their "oh we're comedians lol so idk drama can be Difficult Difficult Lemon Difficult." MMMM I THINK THE FUCK NOT, MY GUYS LMAO??? They both did SO well with all the drama and painful moments. The acting in episodes 2, 3, 6, and 7 in particular like...God. GOD!!!
I loved so many characters in this season, and I'll of course have to give two individual shoutouts to my two favorite new ladies, but man. LET'S GO FRENCHIE!!! ALWAYS A DELIGHT!!! FANG/KEVIN MY ABSOLUTE SWEETHEART. JIM SERVING ABSOLUTE FUCKING GENDER THIS SEASON. OLU OLU DARLING OLU. PETE NEVER MISSING WITH HIS ONELINERS. LUCIUS BEING SO THEATRICAL AHDJKSDK LIKE NATHAN PLEASE YOU KILL ME. ROACH MAKING ME LAUGH OUT LOUD NUMEROUS TIMES AS HE DOES. WEE JOHN AND HIS KNITTING AND DRAG!!! AND THEN OF COURSE MY DEARLY BELOVEDS, ED AND STEDE. I JUST LOVE THEMMMMM!!! But okay okay okay-
Zheng my beloved. I just love this badass pirate queen with her sweet little pigtails and her IMMACULATE LINE DELIVERIES SDHJKSKL. A lot of my favorite deliveries from the entire season came from her quite honestly. Please see: "Girl, how ARE you?" and "Hiiiiiii. I KNOWWW it's been a day" and "I've killed mediocre men. I've killed exceptional men. But you're the worst kind: a mediocre man who thinks he's exceptional."
AND ARCHIE MY BELOVED. She kills me because I remember seeing like, those ~*~audition tape whispers~*~ WAY back in the day, and subsequently thinking she was going to be quite a different character. Only for this silly goofy bubbly energetic darling to pop up and snag my heart. HER deliveries kill me also, like when she goes "Like...STEDE Stede?" and the whole "I was IN the fuckin' snake!" also hhngngngngnershkfhslkds tattooed ladies Hot :(
Speaking of which, the comedy. THE DELIVERIES. THE WAY I LAUGHED OUT LOUD NUMEROUS TIMES THROUGHOUT, EVEN WITH THE DEEP UNDERCURRENT OF DRAMA/ANGST. The whole bit where Stede is in hysterics over his cursed coat is just hsjkdhsklds; it will NEVER not make me wheeze. And then, like I said, almost EVERYTHING Pete says this season kills me; another thing that will never not make me laugh is "a doggie...?" weird little pirate show with weird little humor my beloved
The ROMANCE??? I genuinely was going into the season with the expectation of getting maybe like, one or two Gentlebeard kisses. Imagine my shock and utter delight when we ended up with FOUR, AS WELL AS AN INTIMATE SCENE, THE LETTER SCENES, AND THE LOVE PROFESSIONS. Like, one of them dropping a legitimate "I love you" felt like an unrealistic expectation--the HIGHEST dream tier really. And then wouldn't you know it. And that doesn't even account for all the rest of the couples either! The murder wives having their chaotic little moments of fucked up affection??? LUCIUS AND PETE GETTING ENGAGED AND THEN MARRIED??? HELLO??????
The sets! I know people have pointed out that the world felt a bit simplified this time around, due to budget restraints and what have you. But I still loved what they did with the world even with the various constraints. The market in episode 6 is a PARTICULAR favorite of mine; it's just so lush and colorful. I also love what they did with The Revenge during episode 6 too!
Also, this might be an unpopular opinion, but I really actually liked that they filmed on location. First of all, love that the Kiwis got to be right at home in Aotearoa. Love that they have an even more special connection to the show now. But second of all, I just like when scenery is...actually THERE? It feels way more TANGIBLE. Don't get me wrong; that hugeass wraparound screen that they use to film a lot of sets is a technological marvel. But I'm a sucker for practical.
The deeper and more complex dives into character motivations/trauma. Like, homie lol...When I tell you episodes 6 and 7 utterly set my brain alight in the best way possible. I was CHUGGING through thoughts. You know those gifs where someone is walking around and ranting/passionately talking,,, yeah. Yeah. Maybe because a lot of it "struck a chord" with me indeed, but I love love LOVE getting brain food like that.
Speaking of brain food, in PARTICULAR, the deeper dives into Ed's self-loathing and into Stede's troubles with confidence and masculinity. A lot of Stede's choices were fueled by those two things, and it was SO friggin fun to catch all of them, put them in a jar, and shake them around. I've seen a lot of people fearing his actions in the latter half were out of character, but to me, I don't see it that way. I just see a man who has been so spurned, so left behind, and SO deprived, a man who is stuck thinking he has to be someone else to mean something. And I think that plays a lot into even the EARLIEST developments we saw in season 1, so it was just so intriguing to watch everything messily play out.
THE INNKEEPER. THE INNKEEPER MY BELOVED. SO much about that episode absolutely has my heart. All the different developments, the stakes, the pacing, and the payoff at the end. Not to mention that I had a FEELING that mysterious figure in the trailers was Hornigold, so it was so SO validating to see him pop up PFFF. And also, all those dream/gravy basket sequences were so so good too. I don't know if it's the chemistry between Taika and Mark, or the deeper symbolism, or the lines that have become vocal stims for me SJKDLS (please see: ooOOoooO eddie eddie eddie...you're laying some heavy shit on me, bro), but man. MAN.
And this one gets its own bullet because of course it does: the fucking mermaid scene. Like, are we kidding. ARE WE KIDDING. THE ROMANCE OF IT ALL? THE FANTASTICAL-NESS INDEED?? THE WAY IT WAS ALL FUCKING PRACTICAL AND RHYS SWAM DOWN TO TAIKA AS A BEAUTIFUL LITTLE GOLDFISH AND THEY HAD TO THROW HEART EYES AT EACH OTHER UNDERWATER??? WHAT THE FUCK!!! And don't even get me started on Kate Bush lol. This Woman's Work might easily be one of my favorite songs, if not my FAVORITE song from the season. And man. Man. The whole meaning behind Ed seeing Stede as this beautiful, sparkly being, and not some hypermasculine/extraordinary thing. He fell in love with Stede for who Stede really is. And so I ADORE that acknowledgement.
Speaking of songs, the MUSIC!!! Absolute bangers all throughout. And I loved how there seemed to be even more intermixed within the episodes. Like God... "These are the kids..." 🗣️ HELLO MY LOVE I HEARD A KISS FROM YOU 🦗🦟🦗🦟🦗🦟 . And all the beautiful classic piano pieces and NINA SIMONE AND JUST HSJKDHSFJKLHSKD????
Okay, I've always had and STILL have complicated thoughts and opinions on Izzy, but man, seeing him interact with the Revenge Crew was really something. Seeing Stede's influence come over the lot of them like a warm blanket, extending its welcoming and familial hands...It was just lovely. I love seeing our little sea family care for each other so much. They've probably all hurt so so much in different ways, so to see them all being a collective heart is just so nice.
Speaking of which, the queerness of it all, the queer celebration of it all. The way the whole crew is just...a representation of queer people finding each other, and subsequently finding love and family in each other. Like, when the whole world wants to cast you out, you pull each other in. When no one else wants you, you take refuge in each other. And just...the joy, beauty, and wonder that can be found in that.
And speaking of which x2, the overall care that was put into the entire thing, the effort that was put into the entire thing. I know Max fucked us over with the budget, which subsequently fucked things like the intricacy, the amount of characters, and especially the pacing. But, I don't know; I personally could still tell everyone involved was trying so so hard to deliver for us. Based on the little details, the little callbacks, and the little moments that felt so catered to us, it just seemed so...gifted to us. Not to mention of course, the way they so deliberately chose to end on a hopeful note in case we never get a third season. They care about us. They've always cherished our excitement and passion, so it just...idk; it feels so special to have a bit more of an intimate connection like that. I've never been involved with a piece of media that so avidly SEES its audience, and celebrates along with us. So, despite everything, despite any sort of troubles, despite any sort of lows, that's a big part of what has me clutching all of this so closely to my chest. And I really hope they can still see that love, because I want nothing more than for them to see this beautiful story through.
Also, getting to enjoy this with everyone. Getting to ride the wave from the beginning of filming, all the way through the finale. Getting to see all the excitement, all the theories, all the art, all the fanfiction, all the gif sets, all the meta, and everything in between. It has carried me through some nastiness in my personal life, and has subsequently served as a very welcomed distraction. It's been such a pleasure getting to delight in this new content with you all, and I hope we get to do so into the future. <3

The first thing I should ever have said about Izzy and the last thing I intend to say until at least October 26th.
[Although I am not Her strongest soldier, so who knows if I will stick the landing.]
So to start with, I was a "late" arrival to the show. I knew it existed of course, but I only occasionally saw things that reminded me it existed. The first time I saw a mention of "grumpy/sunshine" it was with a picture of Ed and Stede, so I guess on some level I knew there was shipping going on, but that was literally all I knew. I didn't even know it involved Blackbeard lol.
Which is all to say that I first approached and watched season 1 removed from basically anything anyone had to say about it. I think what actually got me to watch it wasn't anything anyone had to say either, it was from youtube recommendations? Like I think I had watched a couple Taika interviews or something and ofmd stuff started showing up? So after catching a few clips and intentionally spoiling the kiss for myself (life is too short to be queerbaited) I watched it in April/May 2023, and was Changed by it the way so many other people were. It grabbed me so hard I started looking for fics, and when fic grabbed me even harder I became a regular tumblr user for the first time ever in June 2023.
What I didn't do, before the second half of 2023, was care particularly much about Izzy Hands.
I remember describing him as psychologically fascinating to the first IRL friend I talked to about the show, and joking that he just needed a good dom. As much as his decision to call in the navy was a threat to Stede's and Ed's lives, I saw his actions as part of a thing needed for the story, and while I knew he was one of the season's villains there wasn't really any heat behind that assessment.
For me he was there to set things in motion, and to serve the narrative in certain ways, to be a foil, more storytelling tool than man. That doesn't mean I didn't think Con did an excellent job adding layers to him, he absolutely made Izzy take up space and feel more present and textured than he otherwise might have. But when I began to zoom out and consider things on meta level, Izzy existed to do a certain thing or occupy a certain place in relation to the narrative and other characters more than anything else. And that was fine.
Then I started reading meta here, and found myself surrounded by passionate conversations about Izzy from many directions occurring with an intensity that I couldn't wrap my brain around. I saw people tying themselves into knots to justify and excuse the behavior of a textual antagonist, and I was baffled and because I still saw Izzy for what his role in the narrative was, it literally made no sense to see his behavior explained away. In the framework I brought to the fandom when I first arrived, trying to explain away Izzy's behavior would be like looking at a forest fire and trying to explain away processes like combustion and oxidation. Or if you'll allow me to borrow another extended, nature-based metaphor from a fic in an entirely different fandom:
Tumblr media
Again, because from where my head was at, it didn't make sense to look at Izzy's morality as a zero sum game because in this metaphor, he was functionally just a brackish body of water. I'm not saying the morality is brackish, I'm saying the morality was literally not the point because like an estuary, an antagonist "must exist" because antagonists exist for specific reasons directly related to storytelling goals.
So there was no real heat behind my feelings about him or his actions, beyond the natural emotional reactions we have to characters and their behaviors before we zoom out. I was of course upset with his treatment of Lucius, which was targeted compared to other members of the crew. I was annoyed with the way he talked to and about Ed. I laughed when his plans had the equal and opposite results of what he intended, which you could argue happened with every single plan he made for the entirety of season 1. And yes, especially as a Black person living in the US, I felt the fear and betrayal that comes from seeing someone call the cops (which given the show and its writers, it does not feel like a stretch to describe calling the navy that). I wondered if there was any coming back from a choice like that, which is a big overriding question for the series as a whole.
I'm not here to debate any of the points in the previous paragraph. I know how I feel and you feel how you feel and there's already been so much said about the morality of it all by people who have explained themselves well, so let them convince you or not. Instead I've been trying to talk about the two sides of my experience before and after getting into the fandom with Izzy.
Before: Izzy Hands, Narratively Useful Antagonist Portrayed Compellingly And Effectively by Con O'Neill.
After: Izzy Hands, Unfortunate Avatar Of The Sadly Common Tendency For Certain Fans To Hyperfocus On A White Antagonist Or Secondary Character When There Already Exists A Protagonist They're A Foil Of (And Also It Looks Bad TO Do That When The Protagonist Is Someone With A Marginalized Identity).
I'm not here to argue the merits of those assessments either, because that's not the point. The point is the vast gulf between them and how the latter does such an incredible disservice to the Izzy we were given and that so many people claim to love. The latter comes from a place where morality is the focus, which I'm sorry y'all, feels like it originates with people who refuse to countenance Izzy's role in the story as well as his characterization.
Viewers who were willing to see Izzy as an antagonist, who don't view the word "antagonist" as a value judgement in and of itself, who don't think that finding an antagonist charismatic or compelling means anything about their own morality, those people can look at the show we were given and take it for what it was made to be. I'm not saying that it's only the Izzy stans (not enjoyers, not jar people) who start fights or that people who understand that Izzy is an antagonist don't also have deep morality related feelings about him and his actions in the first season. What I am saying is that sanding off Izzy's rough edges and trying to make him into something he isn't poisons even the possibility of having a discussion about him because people enter the conversation with two completely different understandings of reality. If you cannot accept the job that season 1 Izzy was given to do to move the story along, well you might as well have watched a completely different show for how much that fanon Izzy has anything to do with the canon one.
This show deserves better than that. The writers deserve better than that. Con O'Neill deserves better than that. Israel Basilica Hands deserves better than that. We all do.

Every time I see some Taika slander on this app, I block. And I don’t even care about him because I have no clue how he is in real life, but I have enough of the bullshit. Taika is a Zionist? Block. Taika’s fault for whatever-pick-anything? Block. Taika is an evil man? Block. Taika doesn’t do enough to promote ofmd? Block. Taika did this and that in his private life? One, how the fuck would you know, random person who lives in Germany? Keep your nose out of his goddamn business. Second. BLOCK. Let’s celebrate Taika’s shows ending one after the other? You guessed it. Block. Someone literally said Taika’s ancestors are rolling in their grave in shame. Bloooocccckkkkk.
I have no words, this is vile. And this public character assassination has gone on for way too long, from medias and randos on the internet alike.
Those people who gloat and say the most horrendous things need to get off their moral high horse, clean in front of their doorstep and go outside to touch some grass. I don’t know why they’re so spiteful but they need to heal their soul. They’re keyboard activists that are looking for trends to be mad about so they can pretend to care and be morally superior. And then they can harass others. They don’t care and they can’t fool me and they can fuck off. Blockity block block block.
God… I got heated real quick. Sorry about that. But for real, I hope he stays the hell away from social media.
yeah i've blocked literally dozens of people in the last 30ish hours and the vast majority are people who have never watched ofmd who decided to go into the tag and post about how happy they are that the 'racist tv show' that's 'run by zionists' is cancelled and 'the zionists' are now 'unemployed'. or people who are casual fans of ofmd who were like 'meh s2 was bad and you could tell taika was bored of it'
it's just so fucking stupid. i hate this whole mentality that people are either 100% perfect and morally pure or they're evil and every bad thing that happens to them should be celebrated. i hate that people are so desperate to blame taika when the show wouldn't fucking exist without him. i hate that people are so confidently stating shit like 'david should've known taika couldn't commit for 3 seasons' like fuck that parasocial ass shit you don't know any of these people! imagine if it was the other way around and the cast started posting shit on twitter like 'lol lyse jaskierx should lose her job bc i can tell she's bored of spreadsheets'. it's ridiculous

amidst all the discourse I’m seeing over Taika these days I just want to remind the internet that like…real life people are not queerbaiting you??
FIRST of all putting a real life person’s sexuality under a microscope is like…please chill. But also if he jokes about enjoying being a gay icon, if he says he thinks everyone is on a gay spectrum…like, first of all, he has never openly labeled his own sexuality (AND HE DOESNT HAVE TO). so it shouldn’t be automatically assumed that he’s a straight person saying this. But second of all, even if he is straight, it’s not like he’s out here appropriating the gay community or something? Like, this isn’t Misha Collins reverse coming out, this is a guy who’s out here actively CREATING and sincerely engaging with gay content
idk, I just feel like people are frothing at the mouth trying to find a reason to dislike him but can we just, like, let him create his high quality gay/POC rep for us and only jump into this vitriol if he does something actually harmful? or maybe save it for the myriad of other public figures who genuinely deserve it??
(and tangent I see people complaining about the ofmd kiss again and just like…you DO realize that not all kisses look classic Hollywood, right? And even still, you DO realize that that was the first EVER loving kiss either of their characters had ever had, right? And in the first season too?? Like, whyyyy does everything have to look Hollywood fake beautiful lol would you really prefer that)

What makes me really angry about the Loki show is that its not even his show. Its really just about the TVA and the multiverse and Marvel needed to get people to watch it somehow so they just slapped Loki's name on it.
They took a beloved character that many people could relate to and said "nope lol he's just the fucking villain, all of his trauma isn't valid, he's the only one who needs to change" and completely changed his personality and dumbed him down. And then of course they used him being queer as a way to earn brownie points even though if you see the show at a first glance its not even noticeable and if you do look further into it you'll realize its actually misrepresentation. It makes me so fucking angry and sad to see one of my favorite characters being treated like this.
And what's kind of funny and depressing is Marvel is using the TVA to basically say "We should stop forcing people into these boxes of what we think they should be and just let them be who they really are" when that's what they're doing with Loki. Literally forcing this new personality on him and claiming its "character development" because they'd rather bait people for views and money than actually have good and consistent writing.
And also fuck Taika Waititi since he pretty much started this whole Loki character assassination project with Thor Ragnarok.

OFMD episode 7 thoughts
Already know I want that robe Ed has! Dude it’s beautiful and I love the blue
Ed getting the breakfast ready is the cutest thing ever
I’m forever going to be crying that we didn’t see them cuddle! DAVID WHY
Also Ed’s little hum as he’s going down the stairs is precious
Aww Stede being so sweet about the twine on the tray when Ed is so nervous about it (you can hear it in his shudder breath when he says he panicked) (Taika why are you so good at making me feel emotions lol)
“you know that night that I died?” ED. BABY YES HE KNOWS
Still dying about Izzy coming in while they are in dead and his fucking smirk and AGH And Ed is just like, yep saw that coming
AND I AM NEVER GOING TO FORGET THIS LINE “ it’s good to see that it’s not just a ship that’s been good and truly….docked”
Oh yes on second viewing that clock is fucking sus….Zheng Noooo
I actually love Auntie
Also ED IS A CONFIRMED OPEN MOUTH CHEWER lol
Ed’s reaction the the letters “I love that you did that” awww…I hope he finds them! And Stede’s little self deprecating laugh, aw he needed Ed to say that
Dude you can totally tell Ed has never been skipped over…look at the little scoff he does and disbelief
I love love goofy Ed and Stede so much
Also this (Ed’s little speech about drinks tattoos and paps) is something I could totally see Taika saying to a newly famous person??
The revenge boys!!! I love it and Jackie’s little “the Swede will be happy to see ya!” Hehe
Ed’s so nervous for Stede like Stede was for Ed
So Ed’s soft look (outside) was him looking at the fish basket and thinking of a simpler life…so at this point he was already thinking about leaving and Stede and stuff? Expecially after the convo with Izzy? Cause his eyes get really sad.
I still don’t know how to process the fight with Zheng…just that I agree that he was double upset about loosing his found family
I know the little moment of Stede saying “you don’t sound that happy” hurt me cause Ed’s face is like nope and flashbacks to “what makes Ed happy is you” OOF
But, I don’t think it was a full breakup…but it was a discussion that was bound to happen at some point and I’m proud of Ed for explaining he and Stede went over the boundaries he tried to set, for realizing he wasn’t ready for this relationship yet and that he doesn’t know what he is……And that Stede was open to their relationship being “whatever” until Ed is ready
But god I’m still upset about his word choice and it’s been almost 24 hours since this episode dropped “last night was a mistake” still hurts very bad cause like I said…pipeline in Stede’s head to “I was a mistake”
I think it was an alright conversation until Ed said he was leaving (leaving Stede first so he doesn’t get hurt which is what I expected in s1 but figured would happen this season…tho not like this and this close to the season finale…yikes)
And Stede’s reaction about the fish, damn Ed was so proud of that fish…but my two cents, he wasn’t being malicious I think he was just saying one fish does not make one a fisherman
Oh but the “fishermen and pirates are nothing alike like” damn
Steak Knife is lovely
I think laughing at the guy was part drunk Stede and also him covering up the pain of his other kill…idk how to explain
Also we can still hear the ROP screams and stuff during the first part of the credits
Once again, love freaking fang and that roach made mud baths a thing
So yeah, rewatching this episode…it was alright and then got painful toward the middle and definitely second hand embarrassment worthy at the end but I thought it was a decent episode. Of course it had pacing issues but that’s MAX’s fault, not David’s

if ppl are looking for ways to explore Ed's adhd without playing into dicey territory surrounding cleanliness, they can just look at Taika's own list of very obvious adhd symptoms (that he doesn't seem to realize are adhd) like suddenly needing to run around the set, getting easily overwhelmed around other people, and becoming so obsessed with online chess that he can't sleep.
i have worked. VERY hard to keep my parasocial attachment to taika waititi at an appropriate level. so i did not know those things about him and also i personally will not be doing any research into taika waititi’s adhd symptoms. but these are VERY good ed traits and that’s not a bad idea lol
it’s not just cleanliness (and that part was more me talking abt my depression rather than my adhd lol) that becomes dicey with some people’s adhd/neurodivergent headcanons. one of the biggest ones i’ve seen that’s incredibly pervasive in this fandom but also isn’t actually supported by canon is the “ed needs izzy to run the ship, he’s incapable of staying organized on his own” read. and like, i’m saying this as someone who DOES need external support: there is no reason to headcanon ed as needing a white man to keep his life together. ffs, apply taika’s work ethic and how he always has a million projects going on to your ed interpretation. fuck your “ed gets bored of things quickly and leaves things half-finished” headcanons give me “ed picks up new creative outlets all the time and fucking excels at all of them.” that’s more in-line with what we see in canon, anyway.

I started Our Flag Means Death FURIOUS and bitter. I was still high on the Always Sunny train and feeling that no other type of humor would ever compare to sunny’s humor and as I watched the pilot I was seething with anger cause I was already feeling the show wouldn’t live up to what I thought it could be. Nobody was talking about it and there were a few episodes to come out, so I hadn’t even heard of it before (my friend told me it was a Taika pirate show and we should see what was it about). My first impression of Stede was that he was gay, but that the show wouldn’t possibly go there and that I’d eventually be disappointed when it’s not the case. Secondly, Jim. The moment I saw them I thought trans, but then again, how often it is that the trope of “dressing as a guy to blend in” leads to actual trans rep? I saw all the queer allegories, the queer undertones but honestly thought the show wouldn’t deliver. It’s a silly show about pirates, a workplace comedy with a new gimmick. I thought it was fine when I finished the last episode. Maybe a week later (if I recall correctly) I went back to it, giving it another chance. With each subsequent episode, I understood the series more and more. I saw that Jim’s actor was non binary and that gave me hope that the queer undertones was actually intended and thought of.
Then of course, Blackbeard. Episode four was an eye opener. Firstly I thought “people are gonna ship the hell out of these two” (me included) but I was still skeptical. But then… The parallels with Mary and Blackbeard? I thought I was loosing my mind. But it just got gayer and gayer (Taika’s heart eyes like, they’re impossible not to notice). But it was still in my mind that it couldn’t be the case, how can a show be this unapologetically queer without being marketed as such??? I’m always on the lookout for queer stuff so I’d certainly know. Episode 5 went on and we saw Lucious and Black Pete as an item and I took that as confirmation that nothing would happen between Stede and Ed (like, come on, we got a non binary character and a gay couple, if there’s more than it’s officially for the gays) but then!!! The moonlight scene! I legit thought I was going insane thinking to myself this is the most romantic shit I’ve seen I can’t believe this is happening is it really real or am I this delusional??? I was in it now and couldn’t stop my binging the show. With each subsequent episode I got more and more sure it was really a romantic comedy and let me tell you the rush and the serotonin I felt knowing more and more that for the first time I was getting what I hoped for? Scratch that, something better than what I had hoped for.
There were only 8 episodes available and when I got to Calico Jack everything happened again. I looked at him and though “lol ed’s ex” but thought I wouldn’t be so lucky… Well think again! I was still wondering if it was all some sort of next level queerbaiting but Jack went there and said “nope, we used to fuck” (and for that I’ll be forever grateful of Will Arnett). Then obviously the feet touch aka the most romantic thing to have ever happened in fiction. The first thing I did was to look up people here on tumblr to see if everyone was consuming it with the same eyes as I and let me tell you, watching the fandom start was so cool and I’ll remember those simpler times fondly. We were all wondering what would happen, if there would be a kiss (and people still debating if it was bait or not).
The last two episodes released like a week later and I waited as patiently as I could. The kiss and subsequent break up oh I was in heaven. If there’s something I like is drama and it peaked as Mary realized Stede had come back. Ohh and episode ten hm! Delicious. Anyways after the kiss everyone and their mom knew that it was not only canonically queer but an inherently queer show, the fandom grew in unprecedented ways. I lasted like four months before I quietly got away cause big fandoms intimidate me. Too much content for me to process and way too much discourse… But I’ll be here for this season because the brainrot is real and I’m exited to see the show being even more unapologetically queer and more explicitly than ever as a love story.
I’m just really happy to have stumbled upon this show without knowing a thing and finding out in real time that it’s one of the queerest shows in existence.

I wasn’t going to bother bringing this up anywhere but all of the hate Taika keeps getting is making me mad lol. Anyways I was looking through Taika’s old posts and likes on Twitter not too long ago (not in a weird way I was just nostalgic for the days he was active online) and I guess this isn’t common knowledge but… he was liking stuff about Palestine as far back as around 2018. Tweets literally calling for the decolonization of Palestine and condemning the Israeli government for murdering & imprisoning citizens in Gaza. I get that it’s his actions now that matter and I don’t agree with the letter he signed but it’s pretty obvious what his beliefs are.
anon if you happen to have any screenshots of these tweets my messages are open, so i’d really appreciate if you could send them to me if you’re cool with it. i’m not super comfortable going through anyone’s social media to “gather evidence” about this kind of stuff (not implying that you were doing this just that i personally don’t want to lmao) but i’m very curious to see what you’re referring to.

I know its silly but it gets on my tits when people try to act like Taika I'd some ugly old guy with a hot young wife and she is way out of his league in terms of looks, have people looked at the guy and noticed how stupidly beautiful he is? Have they watched the strip or ofmd? Nah they've probably just seen Thor 4 if that.
Riiiiiight? Drives me nuts. He's a gorgeous dude. Those eyes, the hair, the face the everything. That plus humor? gtfoutta here. People get too lost in "age" in this case. It sucks. Also lol he certainly is not a rock man like in thor 4. And mmm we all remember that lovely tush of his in The Strip <3<3<3<3

#HuntForThePirateHome Watch Party
(crossposted from my twitter)
Hunt for the Wilderpeople reflects a common theme in Taika Waititi's work, and in OFMD, about people's perceived worth/capabilities. It's easy to look at someone from the outside and call them a "bad egg" or an idiot/failure.
But with love, affirmation, and understanding, people are so much more than that. It's funny when Paula sums up all of Ricky's delinquency, but it's also so sad that she's pre-decided his kid's entire future, boxing him in before he's even started.
***
I'd forgotten that Oscar Kightley was in this. He was one of my favorite parts of Next Goal Wins!
***
In a weird way, Bella is a bit like Stede after his reunion with Ed. She's thrilled to have Ricky there and eager to lavish him with everything he could want, but she's also cognizant of what he's been through and trying to respect his space.
***
"I'm so happy we found you, buddy. I'm sorry it took so long." 🥹
***
"He's tricky like that, Jesus"--lol, I love it.
***
Taika is so good at setting up little visual things that pay off later in the film, creating a great narrative moment without any dialogue. It's such a gut punch when Ricky pulls back his blankets and the hot water bottle isn't there.
***
I love this movie. Every element is just wonderfully executed. The acting, dialogue, camera work, music choices, even the chapter titles--they all serve to enhance the story the film is telling.
***
"Do you want me to go find help? ...I'd die, wouldn't I?"
Julian Dennison is so great as Ricky. Taika's gift for casting/directing kids is impeccable, he never misses.
***
The most heartbreaking thing about Ricky's story about Amber is that we the audience (and Hec) understand what really happened better than he does. Brilliant scene, gaahhhh!
***
"'Faulkner is Cauc... Caucasian.' Well they got that wrong, 'cause you're obviously white." Love that line!
***
I love Ricky's "he made me do stuff" monologue. It's common to have one character innocently say something that sounds completely wrong to another character, but it's rarely done with such finesse. Nothing Ricky says sounds forced for the sake of the joke.
***
I like Ricky and Hec's conversation about "majestical" vs. "majestic." I relate to that feeling of knowing a word isn't "proper" but using it anyway because it feels closer to what I want to say than the real word.
***
@netflix is a great platform for Hunt for the Wilderpeople. It would pair wonderfully with Our Flag Means Death, another hilarious, heartfelt story with a unique vision whose amazing cast features some talented Polynesian actors! Won't you #AdoptOurCrew?
***
"She wanted to save us poor wretches when no one else wanted us, like rescue dogs"
This is a line that could easily be uncomfortable and patronizing. But we've met Bella, so we know that this is true in the sincerest way possible.
***
Paula is a subtle Miss Trunchbull, change my mind.
***
Oh god, poor Zag--you were a good dog. 😢
***
"I was trying to tell you it was like The Lord of the Rings!"
Ricky Baker has never done a single thing wrong in his life, your honor.
***
"Don't even get me started on the national rugby team! They're not human."
Psycho Sam has entered the chat!
***
Okay, so Frenchie would absolutely believe the same conspiracies as Psycho Sam, but he'd also be like, "Take it easy, man, alright?"
***
It's hard for me to pin down my favorite Taika film, but I think Hunt for the Wilderpeople is his quintessential film. While his onscreen role is small, it's like concentrated Taika Waititi, and it's the one I'd use to introduce people to his work.
***
@netflix, Hunt for the Wilderpeople is about finding a place to belong after you've been rejected
Our Flag Means Death, which is also about belonging, was rejected by its former streamer
You could #AdoptOurCrew and give this diverse, critically-acclaimed show a new home!

i know this isn’t proof or evidence since these are run by different staff than the CEO but this looks bad that tumblr is promoting this:
Tumblr media
(taika waititi is a zionist — no i’m not saying that just because he’s jewish — and theres a ton of issues with this show, i dont watch it. they cancelled our flag means death but hbo max is having so many issues. buncha ppl from the last of us — which i love (and hate a lot of the second game because of this which i didnt know initially lol) — are zionists too but they aren’t cancelling that either.)
i mean tumblr is this the time. especially with all the other suspicions surrounding your staff.
also ofmd fans on here seem so out of touch. i read a post like “WHAT IF IT HAPPENED TO YOUR SHOW”… no i’d be fine if they cancelled the last of us over zionism because surprisingly i care more about Real Genocide than fiction
"what if it happened to your show" ??? as if shows aren't regularly cancelled over much less harmful things all the time? what.

This OFMD vs Black Sails debacle is the best possible proof of "Gay is not a genre" and "You cannot describe a piece of media just by listing what type of 'diverse' characters are in it."
Like, the two shows together prove that just listing out characters and going "It's gay!" isn't enough because they are extremely different in terms of tones, themes, story structure, and... just about everything besides there being gayness and pirates. Like Flint and Stede couldn't exist in the same universe, not only because Flint would gut him immediately but just... tonally, narratively they don't mesh. It'd be like trying to put a Looney Tune character into a prestige drama.
And OFMD alone shows that even if "there's like gay people and people of of color here" was a genre, it's still not enough because... quality of said representation matters. Gay people and people of color aren't getting proper representation watching two people who were part of the slave trade do a frigid, awkward kiss. A show with heavy input from a man with ongoing antiblack racism, even outside said show, isn't... a win for anyone.
So, yeah, this situation kinda proves that when you are trying to entice someone to watch or read or play something, "Lol, it's gay pirates and like... idk I guess people of color exist in it too" (because, let's be honest, it's primarily white fans who do not really care about people of color outside of using them for brownie points who do this, I am a white person and see this happen FREQUENTLY) doesn't tell anyone about what they are consuming.
And, in fact, can leave out the fact that inclusion of a 'diverse' identity doesn't mean that anyone with said identity will enjoy the show. Won't be hurt by the show. Because even if you go "Yeah, OFMD is racist but like... it's still gay! Straight homophobes won't know OFMD is canceled because of racism, they'll just celebrate because gay people lost" (which @pirate-battle is saying... like a racist would), you are ignoring that Black gay people exist.
And are hurt by people shipping and idealizing real slave owners.
Historical whitewashing via "gay shipping is always good!" is in fact... quite heinous.
So... let's all be more responsible when describing media and recognize that hiding a piece of media's atrocities behind "Don't you wanna see if next time, Taika Waititi will kiss another man WITHOUT looking like he's about to be shot in the head" is an awful thing to do.
And will only ever backfire, when you get people to watch it, and they realize how fucking awful the show is and then get pissed at you about it. Like... congrats??? You deserve the vitriol you get.

love how you asked for evidence and they went 'here's my conspiricy theory I made up based on something that was blown out of proportion' lol
Im sick of hearing about that damn letter. Im willing to bet money that 95% of them were told its just about freeing hostages and they said yea ok. Obv thats not good, they should've done actual research. But they live in another reality than us and they're prob not up to date of every single world issue. And they probably got screamed at by their Pr teams lol
None of the people who keep yapping about it give a sh*t about Palestine. They're just giddy at having a morally right reason to shit on certain people. Which considering this is a literal genocide is really gross.
literally people just want to prove they're the most morally pure
posting callouts for taika waititi, a complete stranger i have never met, about something he didn't even fucking do, on my fandom blog, where like 3 people will see the post, is a complete and utter waste of everybody's time. the only purpose it serves is to make it look like i'm doing something, which is obviously way less important than. you know, Actually doing something
i wish they'd channel their energy into contacting their elected officials or going on a protest or doing literally anything else that's going to be more useful than yelling at people on tumblr who haven't done enough performative bullshit for them

It’s been a couple days now and I still can’t believe I put a fake beard on my face that looked that disturbingly real. It was such an weirdly affirming look into my future once my facial hair starts coming in thicker. I absolutely was just dicking around bc friends of mine were hosting a drag show with a costume contest and I was like “lol what if I tried this.” Absolutely did not expect it to work. Wish I had better pictures now 😝
Oh and the eternal gag of “local man related to Taika Waititi still surprised by the fact that he kinda looks like Taika Waititi when purposefully dressed like Taika Waititi.” That’ll never get old.
Anyways prepare to see me looking like this at like every con from now on.
