The new Velma show seems to neatly fall into this trend of tv shows (paramount heathers, leaked powerpuff girls script) that want to seem progressive by having a diverse cast, while simultaneously wanting to preserve that same edgy, punch-down comedy style found in 'centrist' or conservative media. They want the praise for having female, queer, and characters of colour while still retaining an audience made up of mainly edgy white men laughing at how ridiculous ‘the minorities’ are behaving. It’s a punch-down comedy wolf in progressive sheep clothing.

The fundamental flaw in this logic is that show runners assume the audience that would enjoy this humour will see past that supposedly progressive façade… and that often doesn’t happen. A lot of these specific edgy types see diversity as a red flag and immediately presume some type of agenda. It’s almost like seeing a minority participate in the joke (even though they’re still very much the punchline) zaps all the humour out of it or they can’t understand that the joke is still for them if it isn’t said by someone that looks exactly like them. And because they (especially, but not only, cishet white men) recognise all the jokes from things they like, but don’t find them funny anymore, the only reasonable explanation they have is that diversity is bad and makes it unfunny, instead of realising their inherent inability to recognise and relate to any character that isn’t a white man.

Meanwhile, an audience that would appreciate a diverse cast does recognise the comedy for what it is: cheap jokes made at their expense. At most there are occasional jabs thrown in at the white and/or male characters which often don’t relate to these identities in any fundamental or even realistic way. So you have this show that constantly uses their minority characters as punchlines and only includes vaguely progressive, but ultimately pretty universally accepted, messaging hoping progressive audiences will be enamoured with the occasional ‘girlboss moment™️’, while not noticing that vast amounts of regressive ideals.

In the end neither audience feels appealed to and the show is a massive failure. While it might be satisfying to see that these conservative audiences are too blinded by, let’s be honest here, identity politics to recognise something that is clearly made for them, ultimately all that is remembered is that ‘the comedy show featuring a lot of diversity’ failed. And it becomes harder for people who actually want to make media with, and especially for, minorities have a harder time getting any funding. Shows like these are a lose lose situation when it comes to furthering diversity in the media landscape and it’s increasingly frustrating to see this happen again and again.

#most of the criticism I’ve seen so far is hinging on the expectation that this show would be progressive because of the representation #but if you see it as just another family guy copycat you can see all the ‘weirdly problematic stuff’ not as flaws but part of the design #meanwhile most of the criticism coming from conservatives is ‘wokeness ruined scooby doo’#we can’t assume just because something features minorities that it is for those minorities #especially with the rise of anti-intellectualism and ‘the curtains are just blue’ mentality this seems to happen more and more #they also often feature the surface acceptance of women queer people and poc while still being very blatantly bigoted towards other groups #many of which are discriminated against as well but their activism efforts are not as widely recognised #so you might not have as much blatant racism and sexism but incredible amounts of ableism and fatphobia #meanwhile the more obvious bigotry is either subtler or deflected by characters pointing it out like that erases the joke #this isn’t even touching on how all of these shows also wildly misconstrue the purpose of the media they are adapting #scooby doo #hbo velma #velma 2023 #paramount heathers

imo the dismissal of Daemon/Laena was caused by two fundamental issues with the writers:

They’re racist, they cannot comprehend the idea of a black woman being desirable, the idea a man would willingly choose her over a white woman is alien to them. Of course Daemon wouldn’t mourn his wife, of course he’s going to fuck his niece at her funeral, of course he’s going to say they were simply “happy” but not in love. Because how can he possibly love a black woman???

They hate Daemon, they don’t want to show him in a loving marriage with daughters he adores because he’s supposed to be evil incarnate. Sarah Hess expressed her disbelief that Daemon’s a fan favourite which mean everything they did to him was with the intention of fans hating him as much as they do. Daemon/Laena destroys their fanon of a power hungry prince obsessed with blood purity, so they screwed them over.

This is all true. And Sarah Hess has some nerve, after what she said of Aegon.

Tbh it's interesting to me that Kendall is somewhat Marcia's favorite and he doesn't even like her

lmfaooo, that's funny af, but i personally think marcia might have had some "boy mom" tendencies from amir and maybe she thought he needed a "gentle touch" from a mother figure in order too function normally or handle logan's abuse.

I also think there is some plain pity mixed in like, she knew about the accident and she knew it was eating ken up on the inside so even even though marcia was in love with logan, she probably thought he was doing too much torturing ken for the entirety of s2 and maybe some basic empathy kicked in when she called him a "good boy".

Lastly it's actually pretty fucking interesting that marcia actually like, shields ken's body when logan lunges at him in austerlitz.

Not only is she the only person in the room who is actually attempting to stop him from attacking ken (i don't think roman counts) but she could have easily be overpowered by that angry old man, but she did it anyway.

I don't even think caroline has attempted to protect the kids in such a way, like ever, and to top it all of marcia doesn't even owe her middle aged stepson anything and that action didn't even benefit her because if logan had hit her instead, then the roys wouldn't even have come to her defense or anything, so that means that she protected him out of pure instinct, because she has a son of her own and because she thought logan was going too far.

That being said ken is very nasty and weird about marcia, i mean never to her face of course (he doesn't have the balls) but it's his racism+misogyny getting mixed up, like he couldn't stand the fact that daddy valued a brown woman's opinion over his.

Anyways - I started watching Warrior on HBO Max and it’s about the Chinese Americans in California after the Civil War and the racism they faced is astounding

Some Thoughts on Dasha Nekrasova (comfrey from succession) and The "Irony-Pilled Micro-Celebrity, to Borderline right winger" Pipeline.

This morning I fell down the Dasha Nekrasova (of HBO's succession) rabbit hole.

I've taken a particular fixation on a pattern I call: "irony-pilled leftists turned borderline right wingers." I've found that it almost exclusively plagues white women online.

If you haven't heard of her, Dasha is an "internet micro-celebrity" who's gone from a full fledged socialist; being featured in a viral info wars clip, advocating for Bernie sanders and universal healthcare, in full sailor moon garb; to hosting a podcast called "the red scare," being vehemently pro anorexia, becoming a catholic "ironically," and shouting slurs with Ivy Wolk for an "avant-garde post modern movie" about 4 Chan and cancel culture.

Neither Ivy Wolk nor Dasha Nekrasova are the fixation of this sub stack piece, but they are mentioned a few times, and the impression they leave is definitely sour. If you're at all interested, it's an insane read that I really recommend. I had nothing better to do and actually bothered reading the entire thing, if you're a normal person you can probably skip the majority of the beginning and still retain it's story and messaging.

On the topic of her acting career, Dasha most notably had a cameo-esque role as, Comfrey, in the hit HBO show, Succession. I'm a huge fan of the show and took notice to her absence in the fourth and final season, as did this twitter user:

Citing her recent pro anorexia twitter ramblings and a controversial podcast interview with the right wing extremist, and conspiracy theorist, Alex Jones, as possible reasons for her absence in most recent installments of HBO's Succession.

In November 2021, she posted pictures on Instagram of her and her Red Scare co-host posing alongside Alex Jones. In the subsequent installment of her podcast, she called him an "incredible entertainer."

The right has seemingly welcomed her with open arms. Dasha has risked allegedly losing her most tangible role in television, for the sole opportunity to grift among figures like Alex. She posits herself as an intellectual, but in an ironic artsy way that you just couldn't understand.

In actuality she's a public figure steeped in post ironic filth, with no self awareness or care for the marginalized communities she's potentially sacrificing.

As a black woman who grew up in North Carolina and has lived all over the United States, I’m very happy that Mr. Blow acknowledges that racism isn't just a problem in the south:

Blow dismissed the northern bias that racism is worse in the south. Its history may be fraught when it comes to anti-Black discrimination, but Black people have experienced racial violence everywhere in the country, not just the south. He made the point that many of the cities where Black men were killed by people were destination cities for many Black individuals in the first great migration out of the south. “Racism is not regional,” Blow said.
