People are sleeping on this queer representation + show in general

As a queer Asian American I feel an obligation to get more people to know about Warrior (2019) which is streaming on MAX (HBO), but had originally aired on Cinemax.

This show is based on an original concept and writings of Bruce Lee and is executive-produced by his daughter, Shannon Lee. It is set in 1870 San Francisco and bases a lot of the story and characters on historical figures during/around the Tong Wars. It's a riveting, action packed series that's sure to please anyone who enjoys old school martial arts films, westerns, dramas, and more.

But that's not it. The show has an interracial queer relationship that too many people don't know about. This will now go into spoiler territory. So if this post has already convinced you to go watch it just from the first image, then don't read on.

You first get to see Ah Toy and Nellie Davenport interact at the beginning of season 2. Ah Toy, from season 1 is already canonically bisexual. From the get go it is evident that they are enemies as Ah Toy is an influential madame in Chinatown who runs a brothel. While on the other hand Nellie is a rich widow who has aided the police force in raids throughout Chinatown to shut down crib brothels. In time you'll learn that they're both badass motherfuckers, but I don't want to spoil that for you!

As the season progresses, they find that they aren't as different as they originally thought. Falling straight into the enemies to lovers story path. So here's a still from season 3 of these wonderful bi women to encourage you all to check out Warrior.

The costumes and visuals in Warrior are fucking amazing! Mai Ling and Li Yong in their wedding attire! Ah Toy in PURPLE yesss!

Hoon, “romantic and happy” means nothing to me without Ah Toy/Nellie. If Bill’s wife can miraculously come back last season, Nellie can too damn it. Ah Toy was like “Its safer in Chinatown” but every episode has her getting attacked and stressing about her shoulder. Like babe he’s already won if could make you give up your wife and happiness to go back to Chinatown. OK really looks like Lai is gonna go after Dickland herself next episode. So maybe Ah Toy will fight him in the finale. DON’T KILL LAI

I KNEW this would happen with Father Jun and YJ! At some point, YJ will have to put him out of his misery. Ughh my heart!

Ah Sahm is still cursed in the romance department, huh? Young Jun is out for Yan Mi and the cops are on her trail, too. I hope she won’t die and just leave the city.

Li Yong, the elders are actually being very reasonable here. They’re just asking for better communication and less crazy decisions! He’s such a malewife for Mai Ling. Like I get it, he knows her and her story like nobody else. But come on, dude. You’re gonna regret it.

So not a Red Wedding…but a Red Honeymoon. Warrior is very good at creating fight scenes that matter. They have stakes, they drive the story and the characters forward. Li Yong killing his best friend to protect Mai Ling was so emotional! He even yelled at Mai Ling to get out! That’s how you know he finally broke. How much more is he willing to sacrifice for her and love? Chao was right, love has consequences.

Mai Ling is a complicated bad bitch. She’s ruthless and power-hungry. But her feelings for Li Yong and Ah Sahm are real, deep down. At this rate, she’s gonna push away everyone who could be an ally. Can’t wait to see how this will affect her and Li Yong.

The second biggest fight was Bill vs Chief Atwood. I must say, Bill’s been growing on me this season. He was the only one who gave a shit when Atwood was terrorizing the Chinese. The other cops are just mad that he’s punishing their people, too. Still, 5 years in prison for stealing some food is ludicrous. Atwood is an evil menace for everyone, white or Chinese. I’ve been waiting all season for Bill to beat the shit out of him! Too bad it’s gonna bite him in the ass later.

Wdym there’s only 2 more episodes?? Didn’t season 3 just premiered like yesterday???

This season feels a lot darker or is it just me? Fuckley is mayor and everything is falling apart. Nobody is even remotely ok

IF I've read IMDB correctly, under the upcoming section it shows that Miranda may indeed be in the last 3 episodes (hopefully not as credit only). She was not listed in the credits in episode 6 (and most likely not in episode 7) but this screen shot looks like she may be back in 308/309/310.

I truly hope she's back in the last three episodes as this will give us a chance to maybe see them reconcile & get a glimpse of the kind of rebuilding Ah Toy may allow herself...with Nellie...moving forward.

Loved what Nellie said in 3.05 : "Rich & powerful men like Strickland will always find a way to put a thumb on the scale, but we can rebuild."

P.S. That trailer for 307 got me thinking all kinds of thoughts! I'm a little worried for Lai.

Warrior Season 3 Finale

(Sorry person who sent me an anon message, I accidentally deleted it 😭 but here ya go)

AH TOY AND NELLIE KILLING DICKLAND TOGETHER!!! THE WIVES ARE SO BACK!!!

They had to fit in A LOT this episode, but I’m glad Ah Toy and Nellie had two very solid scenes. I fantasized so much about them getting revenge together, and it actually happened! Sorry Leary but the wives deserve this more! Dickland talking shit and playing stupid mind games with them. His arrogance was his downfall. No asshole YOU should be afraid because Ah Toy is not playing around! She didn’t get a single scratch while slicing and dicing him like a pig! It was so bloody and brutal and violent, I love it! Nellie being backup with her shotgun like “you’re doing great sweetie!”

Then Bill and Leary had to show up at the wrong time! Though I don’t think Bill can recognize her from that distance. Then Nellie began shooting at them and they ran away. So hopefully they’ll be off the hook next season. Burning Dickland’s body in the incinerator was pure poetic Justice!

Back at the brothel, the adrenaline of revenge is replaced by crushing despair. Dickland’s death didn’t bring back Lai and their girls. He’s not the only greedy and evil man out there. Ah Toy’s been in survival mode for so long, she’s TIRED of all this shit! She never let herself show emotion like this, not even with Ah Sahm. Seeing her completely break down with Nellie is a huge deal for their relationship! After everything that happened, they still love each other and became even stronger. Nellie holding Ah Toy close and saying “I’m not going anywhere” 😭🥺💕 So similar to how they ended last season. I predict that Ah Toy will leave the brothel, and they’ll rebuild somewhere next season.

Mai Ling confronting Eliza was so good! After the trauma she endured, Mai Ling can’t help relating to Eliza. What Eliza did was wrong, but her shitty husband is the real problem. Mai Ling giving Eliza a knife…I hope she use it well.

So here for Catherine Archer scamming Buckley for all his money! Rob his slimy racist ass, lady!

The Tongs, Isaac’s crew, and police fighting over the money plates. The ice factory is a homage to Bruce Lee, according to the Internet. Nice. The finale definitely isn’t short on action, I counted 4 in this episode! Isaac almost took the plates but Ah Sahm handled him, and gave them to Lee. That means Yan Mi can be free.

Tbh I’m quite concerned with how they portrayed the black characters this season. Abigail is good, but most of them were antagonistic. I’m aware of how Asians are deemed “the model minority” and often pitted against African Americans. I just wish the show could’ve subverted that somehow.

Back to Yan Mi, she’s released from jail and runs home to her father. It’s a very poignant scene that can resonate with children of immigrant parents. She respects him, but felt stifled by his expectations. Still, she did mess up by getting involved with a gang. I would’ve preferred Ah Sahm to not have romance this season, but it served it a purpose. I like Yan Mi as a character. Too bad she gets so much flack for getting between YJ and Ah Sahm.

After getting disowned, she goes to the train station. Ah Sahm never made it, but Chao does. He convince her to go without him anyway, and she does but it’s hard. She got the money from Chao, but she’s also alone as a Chinese woman. We’ve seen other characters try to get out and it didn’t go well. Still, glad they didn’t kill her and hopefully she’ll be ok. Just a small town girl…living in a lonely world…she took the midnight train going anywhere…

After Kon Pak, Lai, and Father Jun…I draw the line at Chao getting stabbed multiple times! ZING is back and he wants revenge against everyone! Bill and Lee looked so happy, laughing on the porch 😬 They better not kill Chao if they get season 4! So many Asian characters died this season, they better replenish! Hello, Michelle Yeoh??? 🙏🏻 Don’t let the white characters outnumber them!

Finally… the dreaded moment where Ah Sahm has to choose between his sister and the Hop Wei. I figured he would choose Mai Ling. His relationship with Young Jun has been going downhill this season. It’s hard to watch because I understand both of their perspectives. Ah Sahm vs YJ and Hong was equally epic and heartbreaking. None of them took pleasure in that fight, but it was necessary. Ah Sahm knocked both of them out before going to find Mai Ling.

Meanwhile, Mai Ling is defending herself against the Hop Wei. She makes some progress with her gun, but gets overpowered by them. It looked like she might die by drowning, but I didn’t buy it. Ah Sahm and Mai Ling are reunited as they desperately cling to each other. No more Hop Wei and Long Zhii. Li Yong became the leader of his own tong, good for him! Exploring these new dynamics in season 4 will be very interesting. I’ve always understood Mai Ling while not agreeing with all her manipulative schemes. Hitting rock bottom could lead to some sort of redemption for her. Looking forward to it!

Big political changes will definitely endanger Chinatown next season. The Chinese Exclusion Act was passed in 1882, but it might be sooner in the show. Not good when everyone is still divided and fighting each other. Perhaps Ah Sahm, the embodiment of Bruce Lee, will unite them all in the end.

Season 3 had its flaws, but overall it was amazing! I really hope it doesn’t end here, the story and characters have so much potential! Fucking Hollywood studios refusing to pay people fairly 😡😡😡 I saw on Twitter some of the Warrior cast joining the protest too, it’s great! Season 4 of Warrior or we riot!!!

May favorite show is back! So many thoughts and Feelings! Just gonna throw this out into the void!

Warrior S3E1-3

Ah Toy/Nellie/Lai—As always, gotta start with my fave girl and her wife! It’s been only 2 months since season 2 so she hasn’t fully healed yet. She’s been spending a lot more time at Nellie’s vineyard. Those two and Lai make such an adorable little family! After all she’s been through, Ah Toy deserve some love and happiness. Alas, it’s not easy being an interracial gay relationship at this time. The vineyard was their safe space where they could be together freely, until Douglas Dickhead barged in. This guy clearly do not understand the concept of “no”. He’s still salty he got rejected by a lesbian lmao. It was incredibly painful to see the destruction of the vineyard, though the fight was awesome. Shotgun Nellie, let’s gooo! Love the other girls fighting back too! That one motherfucker with the whip! Lai saving her mom! I really hope they can get through this and get revenge on those assholes. I wouldn’t forgive the writers for pulling a bury your gays during Pride Month.

Hop Wei—Young Jun and Ah Sahm are still on thin ice with each other. Poor lovable Hong gets to play the peacemaker in the middle. He also gets some loving this season, good for him! Business is bad because of extra police presence and racist laws being enforced. YJ going off on that old man was not a good look, ouch. This new money printing scheme will only lead to trouble later on. I also think it’s an important metaphor about money and power being the tools of hatred and inequality. Ah Sahm has a new LI named Yan Mi, who doesn’t put up with his bullshit. I like her fire. Ah Sahm is a feminist for dating strong women who drag the shit out of him. He’s also struggling with being a gangster or a hero for his people. Also his relationship with Mai Ling and YJ.

Long Zhii—Mai Ling seems to be the only one who’s winning right now. Her alliance with Buckley has protected her Tong from the police raids. Now she’s absorbing other Tongs and expanding her influence outside of Chinatown. It’s interesting seeing a different side of her while interacting with the rich white ladies. It brings up the idea of assimilation into white society for acceptance, which often isn’t true. Also the eagerness of white people to consume Trauma Porn from POC. Mai Ling is covertly manipulating them, but it’s possible they can turn on her just like that. I think she might have learn a very hard lesson later on. Also why is she so impressed with that fugly pink dress??? Have you SEEN your wardrobe on this show?? Also Li Yong getting more depth and his friendship with new character Kon Pak(?). It kind of remind me of the relationship between YJ and Ah Sahm. He’s already whispering into Li Yongs ear about being leader of the Long Zhii. Their fight scene in episode 2 was dope! Shoutout to the legend Brett Chen, lead stunt coordinator for the show! Coordinating your own death must be fun lol.

Chao being Chao as usual lol. Zing’s gonna be after him tho.

Finally, a lot of new characters to shake things up this season. I love the show but I wish it would have 90% less screen time for the racist white people, as “complex” as they are.

Getting 3 episodes after 3 fucking years is amazing! Now I just have to wait for episode 4 😭

Father Jun AND Lai??? Noooooo 😭😭😭😭😭

THE WRITERS ARE EVIL THIS SEASON

I can’t even be properly happy about Nellie returning after being MIA for three episodes!

The opening scene with Lai going after Dickland alone was nerve wracking! At least she killed the asshole henchman with the whip. We know Dickland was a soldier and trained with the sword. Lai is a badass, but she’s too angry and not strategic enough. I wish it was different, but Dickland is literally the final boss. He won’t be taken down this easily. The way he was taunting her and giving her sword back ughh the arrogance!

Every time I see Ah Toy I’m like “ma’am why aren’t you looking for your daughter??” But I know it’s actually the writers fault. We don’t know Lai’s dead until Nellie brings her body back to Ah Toy. Imagine losing your vineyard, your wife breaking up with you, and suddenly your daughter’s dead body is dumped at your door. Ah Toy knows she can’t blame this one on Nellie. She brought Lai back to Chinatown and now she’s dead. Ah Toy and Nellie cleaning Lai’s body for burial.

Nellie: “She deserves Justice.”

Ah Toy: “Justice come in many ways.”

Nellie: “Yes.”

Ohhhhh hell yeah, they’re really doing this! Nellie doesn’t give a single fuck anymore! The system is rigged, time for Justice their way! Ah Toy and Nellie are ride or die for revenge together! I hope they kill that bastard painfully and avenge their girls!

I knew Father Jun was coming, but damn it didn’t hurt any less. Poor Young Jun! Their relationship wasn’t perfect, but they still loved each other. Even if Father Jun didn’t say it back. In the end, he became like Long Zhii. He didn’t want a slow, agonizing death. He fought for everything he had, and went out on his own terms. RIP to a Warrior legend. Chao gave a very beautiful eulogy at his funeral.

Yan Mi is arrested because Lee recognized her at the wedding. To her credit, she didn’t say anything about the Hop Wei. Instead, it’s Ah Sahm who betrays them to save her. But it was a difficult choice. Love vs Duty is one hell of a battle. Ah Sahm still care about Young Jun, but never belonged in a tong. He was literally bought by them, fresh off the boat. He just want to be a good guy and protect his people. I don’t think he’s getting on that train with Yan Mi, because he still need to complete his hero arc. Watching Ah Sahm and Young Jun’s relationship deteriorate like this is heartbreaking. We got one last scene with them together before all hell breaks loose.

Poor Hong in this episode! He just wanted to have a nice, romantic night with his bf at the gay club! But then he got hit on by a cop. The same cop who put a fucking gun to his head and beat up his people. Of course he would get triggered! NO fucking racist pigs at Pride!!! Then they broke up and it was sad. Ughhhhhhh why must they torture the gays???

Mai Ling and Li Yong going from marriage to divorce real quick. Mai Ling is afraid of him because she knows she made him do terrible shit. But this is literally LI YONG! He always did everything for her, he murdered his best friend/mentor for her! Now she’s treating him like the plague! Though maybe some of it is residual trauma from her first abusive marriage. Li Yong looks like he’s leaving the Long Zhii, so Mai Ling will be extremely vulnerable.
