Why don’t you ship it?

Just make a list of the differences between Ron and Ginny. That's why.

Ok, listen, I love Ron and Harry's friendship but as a romantic relationship, it would be a trainwreck. And this very obvious truth doesn't take anything away from how good of a friendship it is.

One of those things that a person hopefully learns between the age of 14 and 18 is that, for a romantic relationship to work, a friendship (with the addition of sexual attraction) is necessary but it's not sufficient. Because the emotional boundaries and requirements of a friendship are completely different from the ones of a romantic relationship.

There are many behaviours that are completely fine in a friendship that would be very toxic in a romantic relationship.

Ron is a person with crippling insecurity and one of his main sources of insecurity for years is Harry.

It takes Harry seven years and a Horcrux to fully grasp the depth of Ron's insecurities. It's Hermione that needs to explain to Harry Ron's insecurities with his brothers.

Harry starts to feel secure enough in his friendship with Ron to occasionally call him out only in sixth year (after five years of friendship).

Ron doesn't understand fully why Harry broke up with Ginny. Some people try to re-write this as Ron being also protective of Harry but it's not what's written in the book, it's not what you are meant to understand. And it makes perfect sense how it is because Ron and Harry have very different approaches to life (Ron would've never broken up with let's say Hermione in that situation, they would have maybe spread a false rumour).

Ron doesn't have a crumble of the confidence and emotional resilience necessary to be with Harry.

There are seven books of stuff, I could go on for an eternity but really, a relationship between them would end in a month and then Ron would need twenty years of therapy.

What would have made you like it?

Nothing really. I don't even think Harry would be attracted to him. I don't know if you ever noticed but Harry is very picky.

Ron would need to be a male Ginny.

Also, Ron is Harry's helper and that for me is already an issue because it's already an imbalanced dynamic.

Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?

Ron is the best option for Harry after Ginny but he is not in second place. There's Ginny in the first place, then there are fifty empty places and then there's Ron.

I think Ginny and Hermione would be perfect for an experiment with the description: let's lock up two friends in a room and see how long it takes them to murder each other

Hermione is a person with which you need a lot of patience and Ginny is brutally honest and goes straight to the point. See the fight about the potions book where Hermione tries to emotionally manipulate Ginny and how Ginny responds to it.

They don't have the same stystem of values.

Ginny would probably say something that would incredibly offend Hermione and then Hermione would cry and start plotting how to trap Ginny in a jar.

Hermione doesn't appreciate Quidditch nearly enough to be with Ginny and wouldn't be able to keep up with her sense of humour.

They are incredibly different people.

What would have made you like it?

Nothing really. I like their friendship because they are both two people you really don't want against you, like if you piss off both of them, you can consider yourself dead (Fleur in an alternative universe was brutally murdered).

Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?

It's not a death eater ship, or a pedophilic one, or an incestuous one.

Themed Tuesday

Welcome to Themed Tuesday - where I take two stories with a similar theme and compare them to one another.

I don’t know about you, but once in a while, I read a story that makes me fall into a ~mood~, where all I want to read is a certain topic/theme (be it a trope, motif or plot) over and over again until I feel ready to try something different.

This week’s theme:

A short story about Harry Potter stuck in a time-loop

Prelude and Fugue by shes_gone. Post-War fic. Harry x Ron. If this is the only HarryxRon fic I read in my life, I would be just fine. Beautifully written, the entire cast was characterized so well that it felt like an extension of canon without being canon. The romance lived up to its build-up.

(honey) there is no right way by Sincere_Lies. Goblet of Fire fic. Implied Harry x Cedric. Harry relives the day of the third task over and over again. Brief mentions of greek mythology. Cute story, and fun to see a time loop that focuses on a younger protagonist. Enjoyed the depiction of all major characters.

Honestly, these two stories are hard to compare. Both have the time-loop, and a focus on the friendship between Harry, Hermione and Ron but that’s really where the similarities seem to stop. PaF uses the time loop as a plot device for its romance while (honey)’s time loop is more centered around a task. Either way, both are worth the read!
