TERRIBLE, BUT GREAT - CHAPTER THIRTY
SUMMARY:
“Harry Potter.” The cold burrowed into his flesh, the scent of cloying death and molding earth clogged his senses.
“The Boy Who Lived.”
A strange sense of loss and disappointment rose within him. That brilliant, yet cruel boy could’ve been so much more if he’d not stepped down this bloodied path.
Terrible, but great. He pitied this creature.
“Come to die.”
Harry Potter faced the flash of green light with the bravery of a Gryffindor and the broken heart of a Hufflepuff.
---
When Death gives Harry a third option, one that can save everyone he ever cared about, he takes it unflinchingly. Even when that means doing the impossible: falling in love with the enemy, Tom Riddle.
---
THIRTY EXCERPT:
“And you, Hatchling,” said Nagini, her eyes on Harry now. There was an air of contentment surrounding the two of them, as Tom stroked her scales. Harry’s heart swelled with warmth at the fond gaze Tom held for his familiar. “Have you agreed to learn how to better speak my language, Hatchling?”
“I’ve agreed to lessons, yeah,” said Harry. “It’d be nice to learn how to control it.”
“We’ll practice parseltongue tomorrow while everyone has gone to Hogsmeade.”
Harry sank in disappointment. “What?” he said, looking directly at Tom and not noticing his switch to English. “But I’ve been looking forward to the Hogsmeade trip. Aren’t you going? Don’t you have a plan for it?”
Tom raised an eyebrow. “Plan?”
“Yeah, do you want to get some sweets or check out the bookstore?”
“I’m not going.”
“What?”
“I don’t need anything,” said Tom, shaking his head. “Why would I go?”
Harry was at a loss now. He wasn’t sure why he felt so disappointed about the fact of missing a Hogsmeade trip. It wasn’t like he really needed to go either. But… I’d like to go with Tom. “I dunno,” he said, scrambling for a reason. “Uh, for a change of scenery?”
Tom folded his arms. “Harry, have you seen the grounds?” he asked with a sardonic lilt. “There’s plenty of scenery to take in. If you’re in dire need of the outdoors, we can always take the lessons to the grounds.”
“Not quite what I meant and you know it.”
“You know it’s rude to exclude the other party in the room from your conversation. Are you two fighting again?”
Huh? Wait, I wasn’t speaking in parseltongue?
Tom rolled his eyes. “This is ridiculous. You are not convincing me.”
“Yes, yes, forget I exist again, why don’t you?”
“Nagini, he’s being difficult.”
“Me?” protested Harry, shifting back to parseltongue when his gaze rested on Nagini. “I just would like to go to Hogsmeade.” With you. “And the others are going, too. Come with us. It’ll be fun.”
“A Hogsmeade trip is a waste of time if you’re not buying anything in particular,” said Tom, shaking his head. “I’m not interested.”
Nagini’s eyes were sharp as she eyed them both. She uncurled from Tom’s lap, slithering away silently, until she disappeared from the curtains. Neither Harry nor Tom noted her absence.
“But aren’t there other interesting places to visit? We could get a butterbeer.”
“It’s frivolous spending.”
Oh.
Harry blinked. Oh. That was right. While Harry knew what it’d been like to live without money of his own as a child, that had changed when he’d gotten his Hogwarts letter and discovered the wealth his parents had left him. He hadn’t exactly been ‘frivolous’ with his money, but he hadn’t paid attention to it either, not like Ron had often worried about money.
Even now, with his funds somewhat limited, he hadn’t really thought about it too much or what he’d have to do in the future to earn a living. But Tom, on the other hand, was on an assistance fund here at Hogwarts. The only reason he could attend the school at all was because of that fund. Though Tom had always appeared immaculate in his appearance, Harry couldn’t help but wonder now if his belongings were secondhand.
“Right,” whispered Harry. “I forgot.”
Tom frowned. “Forgot what.”
“Well… you haven’t got any family, so I forgot that also probably means you haven’t got money either.”
A mixture of embarrassment and anger flushed through Tom’s cheeks. His chest puffed up; the light in his eyes grew flinty.

Who's Afraid of Little Old Me? (you should be)
“No post on Sundays” Uncle Vernon announced happily, “No damn letters today-” Something came whizzing down the kitchen chimney as he spoke and caught him sharply on the back of the head. The next moment, thirty or forty letters came pelting out of the fireplace like bullets. “That does it!” he snapped, his beady little eyes focused solely on Harry, “It’s you that they want. And they won’t stop coming after us until you’re… gone”. Harry didn't like the sound of that. “But Vernon, we can’t! You heard what that- that despicable old man told us!” “Don’t worry, pet” Vernon said, his nasty grin triumphant, “I’ll leave him someplace so far away that those freaks will never trace him back to us. There’s an institute up north, for these- these hopeless cases and whatnot - St Brutus Secure Centre for Boys. I’ll leave him there, and then we can get back to our nice, normal life”.
Or, the one where Harry doesn't attend Hogwarts in first year but finds his way to the wizarding world anyway, and this changes everything.

I posted the thing. Just did a search and there are surprisingly few role-reversals. I found three on AO3. Out of all my WIP this was the last one I expected to post but it's the one that's most fun to explore.
Tom's the teenager at school. A Dark Lord murdered his mother when he was born so apparently he's famous. Harry's a wraith trapped in the ethereal plane. Tom's the only one who can see him.
(Harry's also the Dark Lord in question but that's not come up in conversation yet).

Summary:
"Maybe you should kill them," Harry says. He's sitting perched on the stairs, hands clasped together, green eyes watching Tom and his irritating year mates. His form is hazy around the edges, an almost translucent quality to his image.
"I can't just kill people," Tom says.
"Not in public.”

Harry felt tears prick at his eyes as he reached a trembling hand forward to touch the stone of the ring. "And you would give me a second piece of your soul?" Tom laughed; the sound jagged like broken glass. He dropped the locket against his chest and took Harry's hand, pressing it against the center of his chest. "I would give you every piece, Harry."
"Eat Your Heart Out", by evaleon70
Summary:
After the war, Harry just wants to live his life peacefully for once. Of course, fate throws him back in the path of Tom Riddle, who takes a liking to the gorgeous Chef Harry and basically kidnaps him.

Undeniable Marks by nrnyx
Regulus Black/Harry Potter/Tom Riddle - Explicit
Harry Potter is twelve years old when his soulmate's names appear on his wrists, Regulus Black and Tom Riddle, but according to everyone, he’s destined to defeat the Dark Lord Grindelwald. Harry will do anything to keep them safe, so he makes an unbreakable vow never to reveal his soulmate's names to anyone. Now five years after the fall of Grindelwald, watching his soulmates from a distance, Harry realizes maybe he should have asked to put a time limit on that vow. Although maybe it wouldn’t have mattered, considering despite having his name on their wrists, neither Tom nor Regulus seem keen on inviting him into their relationship.

Your new story is awesome, Harry's out there creating his own life. Will Harry recognize Riddle as Voldemort? The theme is brilliant, people changing how the story was suppose to go is my favorite plot.
Harry is just about to pack up for the day when he noticed the man watching him. Well, a man was a bit of an exaggeration. If anything he looked about fourteen or fifteen.
He pretended he didn't notice him, carefully packaging his vases to safely transfer them through the forest's hidden tunnels.
If he checked on the knives hidden on his upper arm while he bent over the boxes well that was no one else business but his own. He doesn't know what the man wanted but if he meant him harm, then Harry wouldn't go down without a fight.
He may be overreacting no matter how intense the man's stare was it could have been just because he was dumbstruck by Harry's looks.
He got used to the stares. Harry never thought of himself as vain, but he wouldn't lie and claim this new body was unattractive. If he had looked like this in his old life, he would have made a killing as a child model.
Harry doesn't doubt that as soon as he finished puberty again he would be breathtaking. Secretly, as someone who always felt like he never quite looked alright, the idea of being that effortlessly beautiful was thrilling.
As it were, he had plenty of customers who were more interested in him than his product but Harry didn't mind. If it was good for business then that was all that mattered. He had the luck that his flowers could bloom whenever he wanted, but he still had to care for them and wait for them to grow. It was a lot of work and he wanted to get every coin he could for every hour spent.
He continued to close for the day, doing his best not to look at the man. He knew he was there because the heavy gaze never left his back. By the time he was ready to set out, the sun was just about to set, and the man had yet to move.
Harry concludes the man is another person who thinks him a non-human and was trying to follow him back. As much as the rumors are annoying as they are amusing Harry can't allow them to rest. He knows that in a world where fact-checking was a lot harder to do, rumors are a good means of misdirecting people's attention.
If he wanted to prepare for war, he needed to make sure that his plans weren't discovered until he was ready for them to be. Right now, Harry didn't even know how to wield a sword and if it came down to it, the emperor would easily have his knights execute him for high treason.
It's why he made the effort of mapping out all the hidden tunnels and clear them out before he even attempted to sell his flowers in the market. The back entrance built for the annex was forgotten because it was an underground labyrinth built right under the forest surrounding the castle and being the border between the commoner section of the capital. Harry theorizes it was originally built as an emergency exit and now it worked as a means for him to disappear when being trailed.
Harry carefully pushed his cart along aware the teenager watching him kept him in eyesight. He flickered his eyes to the windows he passed by, watching the teenager's reflection a few feet behind him.
He was handsome, in an almost perfect way. Something about his beauty set warning bells off in Harry's head. The same way a frog's skin could be colorful in a warning.
He walked faster, smiling at the town people that spotted him, even making a young girl of ten blush as he nodded his head at her.
Harry made it to the forest, and then he ran. Distantly he hears hiss swear but Harry, made a shaper turn over a cliff, sliding down the hidden pathway and placing some well-needed distance between them.
He didn't care that his flowers almost fell out of his cart, that the rope he was tugging them with burned in his hands, or that he really should start to exercise more since his legs were starting to burn.
All that mattered was that he got to the fake tree, where the entrance to the lake tunnel is located, before the teenager following him caught up. Harry barely made it, pushing the right branch down, which tugged the fake tree bark up and he slipped in. He just reset the bark, peaking out through a small crack when the teenager burst into the opening, panting heavily and looking around wildly.
The reflections had not done the other justice. He was handsome, with dark hair, dark eyes, and a wicked smile when he realized he lost track of Harry. He threw his head back and laughed, seemingly so amused that Harry wondered if he was insane.
"He got away!" The teenager said what appeared to be air but much to Harry's shock a snake rose out of his shirt collar to scoff.
"Of course he did! You were barely hunting this time." The snake said.  It sounded like she, maybe a woman of a young age, as she tasted the air. "He got away. I can't find a single trail."
"He knew I was following him. He knew it. And yet he was able to " The teenager said sounding...oldy excited. Harry felt his lips twitch, despite himself he thought the other was...cute. They would be the same age if Harry had been reborn at his correct age which was still hard to adjust to waking as four years younger. "I think I just found someone perfect for the open position of my husband."
"Tom Riddle, you know very well that you are already engaged." The snake scolded and the teenager huffed. Harry smother a snicker, founding the whole scene strange enough it was humorous.
"Only since my fool of a father insisted. But I'm sure that won't be a problem for long." He waved his hand and a vase Harry hadn't realized he had dropped, repaired itself from the shattered remains and then flew into his hands. "I'll find a way to rid myself of the useless fiancé and then I'll court this...florist."
"Court him? Why would you do that?"
"Teleportation magic is very advanced and if he can do it at his age, then he will be a great asset. Besides, he is as pretty as the flowers."
"All roses have thrones, Tom. This one won't hesitate to poison if he thinks he needs to. He has the taste of a predator"
"Even better."
"Tom, you are his prey"
"Nagini that is the reason this will be quite entertaining."
The blood in Harry's veins ran cold, erasing all humor in seconds. There was only one snake named Nagini that Harry knew of in this world.
The snake is familiar with the emperor.
But nowhere in the novel was it mentioned that Nagini could speak nor that the emperor was a boy named Tom Riddle. Maybe...she belong to the boy before Emperor Voldemort murdered him?
He was obvious magic, and the Emperor would eventually go on a crusade as a means to disguise his human experimentation on the magic users.
This Tom Riddle could have been one of the first, if not, the first to fall victim to Voldemort.
He watched the snake and the human bicker between themselves as the teenager left. In his arms was the green glass vase that Harry had secretly wanted to keep to himself due to the snake curling around the lion design that he got from a traveling merchant.
Just as Tom disappeared Harry swore to himself that he would protect him from Voldemort .

---
TWENTY-NINE EXCERPT:
Tonight, the moonlight shone through the rippled window glass of the lake depths, illuminating the darkened shades of green of their Slytherin dormitory. The source of those heart wrenching sounds came from one bed, the one nearest to Harry’s bed.
Tom…
Harry stood up with his wand in hand, double checking for wards or traps that might’ve been set by Tom, but there were none. Frowning at that, Harry pulled back the curtains, stepped towards to the bed, and closed the curtains behind himself. Harry turned back in the darkness, drawn towards Tom’s agitated mumbling in his sleep. Harry cast a silencing charm around them, just in case, and eased himself onto the edge of the bed with his torso twisted towards Tom’s head. Somehow, sitting on the bed didn’t wake Tom up.
That’s not normal. He better not curse me for this…
Harry lit his wand with a gentle lumos, dimming its intensity, and lowered it towards Tom’s face. It revealed a sheen of sweat on Tom’s brow, which was crinkled in pain; pale lips were parted in quiet agony. Seeing the distress on Tom’s sleeping face shattered Harry’s heart into endless pieces. Tentatively and ever so lightly, he placed his left hand on Tom’s shoulder and shook it.
Just as Harry touched him, Tom’s eyes burst wide open; he gasped a stuttering breath, as if drowning for air. He moved. Fast, so fast—Harry couldn’t retaliate: Tom shot out with lightning precision, wand magically in hand, its heated tip digging painfully into the bottom of Harry’s chin and forcing Harry’s head to tilt backwards. Harry froze. Those dark eyes stared at him, dull, yet wild in their light.
“It’s just me,” whispered Harry. His hand was still on Tom’s shoulder, so he chanced a gentle squeeze of reassurance. Tom twitched, eyes barely darting towards the touch, before they snapped back onto Harry, hard and unwavering. “You were having a nightmare.”
Silence.
Tom stared at him. With his torso halfway twisted off the bed, he caught his breath as if he’d been sprinting, his chest heaving up and down a few times. He visibly swallowed, his Adam’s apple bobbing once. His last large exhale was slow and long. “Oh…” he whispered. The tension slowly drained from his body, his shoulders dropping slightly, and the pressure beneath Harry’s chin lessened. “I… my apologies if I disturbed your sleep.”
The wand lowered and Harry let out a breath. “No, it’s okay,” he said softly. “It’s okay.”
Tom dragged a hand through his hair, grimacing. Tom set his wand beside his pillow and made an attempt to wandlessly vanish the sweat from his body. It didn’t work. He gritted his teeth; he closed his eyes, taking a deep breath. On his second try, Tom succeeded, drying the sweat from his skin, hair, and pajamas.
What… what the hell… hang on, has he been struggling with his magic all this time, too?
Fuck.
Did lack of sleep make using magic more difficult? Harry knew Tom had been struggling with his classes a bit, but… had he really spent the last two weeks not in full control of his magic? How the hell had he managed to hide it for so long?
‘My lord, are you all right? Did you let him hit you?’
‘Yes.’
But that’d been a lie, hadn’t it?
With rising horror, Harry realized Tom had not taken that cutting curse from Archibald Nott for Slytherin political bullshit clout. No. He hadn’t been able to defend himself. If Harry had declined Abraxas’ request to search for Tom, who had expressed concern about his whereabouts that night, Tom might’ve been hurt far worse. So much worse. Archibald Nott had been downright lethal.
Fucking hell, I’m pants at noticing shit. I should’ve…
I’ve got to do better. I’ve got to start keeping an eye on Tom and the other Slytherins, like Voldemort said.
Tom met his eyes briefly, before he collapsed backwards onto his pillow and covered his eyes with his right forearm. He exhaled again, low, deep, and exhausted to the deepest of soul depths. Harry marveled at this display from Tom, shocked that he’d been allowed to witness it.
“I didn’t want you to suffer through your nightmare, so I woke you,” said Harry in a low voice. Tom didn’t move; he didn’t acknowledge him. After a beat of silence, Harry shifted to leave to give Tom some peace. “Sorry, I’ll go—”
A hand shot out, clutching Harry by the wrist.
“Stay.”

Hey team, looking for a harry potter/tom riddle fic where harry goes back in time to make tom riddle a better person and they end up falling in love. But it works a little too well and backfires. riddle is so in love he purposely sets out to destroy his own soul and does all the horrible things, and kill Harry's parents anyways because if he doesn't then the harry of the present would not be the harry he fell in love with but a completely different person and riddle cannot have that. So when harry get back to the present nothing has changed and he's like wtf ?! Then voldemort comes clean and says he did it all for loving harry.
Not sure if it was a03 or ffn but for the life of me I cannot find it
