#hardware virus au

Tumblr media
So yesterday at work I was daydreaming about an au where the Afton virus caused physical changes (hardware) on top of the behavioural (software) ones.
Fazbear entertainment was forced to abandon the mega pizza-plex when the virus progressed to a point they could no longer keep up with repairing the animatronics distorting frames.
Due to the DCA having 2 personalities, despite the shared body being affected, suns mind is still intact while moon suffers from both software and hardware side effects.
Sun would be the helpful animatronic in the plot, keeping the player safe and curing the virus in the endgame. He’s a big blind softie.
I’m not sure if I succeeded in making this spooky, my first time trying anything kinda horror related. Roxy and Monty - Freddy and Chica

Hehehehehe Yandere and Soulmate AU Soundwave Tfp?
Warnings: Yandere, Dark, Stalking, Unhealthy Relationships, Emotional Manipulation, Property Manipulation
You don’t understand it. There isn’t a rhyme or reason and the more you think about it, the more your head hurts. You have no idea who this person is. Or what. You ignore the little voice in your head, looking over the string of code one more time.
It started innocently enough. A website would take a second to load or your saved passwords would have to be reentered. Nothing crazy and with the amount you used your computer, not a surprise. Your laptop is old, a little lag here and there isn’t crazy.
Then the ads started. Ads to things that you wanted or may have mentioned to friends. More aggressive than targeted advertising, they would load before you had even really connected to the internet. You downloaded every ad blocker you could find (even some questionable ones) and it seemed to work in the short term.
After that the messages began to pop up. Some sort of instant messaging service had gotten its way onto your computer, probably a virus. Some person would reach out, asking about your day and your hobbies. The questions, even if you never answered, got more specific, asking for personal information. You brought it to the local computer store to be scrubbed right after that; no way some stranger was going to be asking about your sex preferences.
Unfortunately, the store was just as stumped as you were. It didn’t have a virus, they said, and they couldn’t find any traces of the chat application you were talking about. You showed them the screenshots and partly due to your panic they took you seriously. They assured you it had been thoroughly cleaned but that night you logged on for the first time in a week and the messages began to pour in, asking why you left and where did you go. How rude it was to leave them like this.
You hate this; every time your computer boots up you get sick. You don’t have the money to get a new laptop and part of you in convinced that it wouldn’t solve the issue. You want to joke about the hardware being possessed but you ignore it; it feels more tangible than that. You stop using the computer as much, switching to your phone but that made it even easier for this person to talk and track you.
This is your last hope. You went onto an internet forum (not on your computer of course) to talk about how to wipe everything. A few people offered some suggestions and one even offered a bit of code to help. The factory reset hadn’t worked and now it was time to bring out the big guns.
You take one last look at the code before running it. Your computer fans kick into high gear, the screen going white, blue and then black. The next step will be to get a used computer, maybe go to the library more; you can’t live like this.
You head to bed, leaving your laptop in the living room. The screen flickers to a bright purple, shining everything in an ominous glow. Not that you see. You’re tucked away in bed, trying to get some sleep. You shake your head, turning over and determined to get some sleep. The hardest part is the person talking to you. They keep insisting that you’re meant to be together. That they’re coming for you. It’s just ridiculous.
Humans don’t have soulmates after all.

I just wanted to say I am so enamoured with Binary Insurgence! I eat up everything, every little crumb, you drop about it and the entire idea is so interesting to me! I'm so in love with stories and worlds like this! I'm also curious to know about the relationship between Sun and Moon, if it's alright to ask. How was it before the fire compared to after? Does their relationship begin to mend (because I'm certain over the years it deteriorated) when y/n comes back into the picture? If any of this is too spoilery or you just haven't fleshed it out yet then you don't have to answer! I'm just super curious about the boys and how you see their dynamic/relationship. I just look forward to seeing how their bond has grown and/or broken and how it may be mended over time.
AHH im glad you like it so much!! Im happy to talk about what i've got, but you are right not everything is fully fleshed out. I have points i wanna get to but while im brainstorming and planning i make up a lot of stuff as i go and then go over it again later to see if i like it or can connect stuff in any way. I have 3 chapters for Arc 1 fully summarized as of now! (Which probably doesn't seem like a lot but i like my chapters long, so it's quite a bit actually).
I wanna say, too, that i'm planning for the first story to be more in the perspective of the reader, so most things about Sun and Moon's personal thoughts and feelings are gonna be more implied than said. I might have some switching points of view, i'm not sure, but i haven't found a place i'd do it or think it's relevant. The sequel is gonna be more from their perspective since it'll mostly be about them.
NOW! I see Sun and Moon as brothers, so they really treat each other in a way that's like that. Before the fire they get along pretty well. Most instances of issue would be when Moon blocks out Sun when he fronts, or just mutual panic over the fact Moon lost his shit w/ the virus. They'll have their disagreements about things (i havent planned specifics yet) but generally they're chill. Sun just worries about Moon hurting people, but Moon worries too. With the way the virus functions in this AU it's hard for Sun to fully fault Moon for what he does, especially because he's also affected by it but not nearly as bad. (I'm gonna explain this more in another ask i have).
Plus, even before the virus they were always glitch/bug-ridden because technicians fucked up their programming continuously after removing them from the theater to work in the daycare. So they had to kinda navigate through that together, glitches and errors on both ends (though not deadly). They hate P&S bc of this, obviously. Hardware fixes suck but they fucking HATE software examinations.
Later on though some issues come into play whenever Sun starts getting worse by being further exposed to the virus (it gets worse for him when they eclipse) because it presents itself in Sun differently than it does Moon. He gets snappier and angrier at times (that comic i made that's captioned "well someones snappy") and while they both understand he doesnt mean the shit he does it's still not great. And nobody's gonna just let themselves be talked to like a dog even if the reason it's happening is because of something the other person can't really help. They're still relatively fine at this point, though.
It's at the end when shit goes really bad, because this part of the story does end badly. I won't spoil specifics but after the fire Sun loses his shit. He starts trying to put the blame on Moon for everything (the virus enhancing his already bad habits/fucking with his line of thinking) out of grief and anger. That carries over into the apocalypse and he just gets worse in general. He gets irrational.
It's a long period of time though, so he eventually also manages it, in his own way. But! I did say before in an ask that in the sequel he's "not evil, persay, but he's a fucking nut". He damns Moon to an hourglass to just fucking get rid of him about 100~ years before they meet you again (he fully thinks he's in the right for this (and he also just hates him) and the only reason he really even stayed around after that was to make sure Moon didn't get out again). He's not a bad-intentioned individual, but he's off the fucking wall at many times bc of the virus having made him worse. He's stubborn as all hell to an infuriating degree, he's irrational, hard-headed, reckless, and while a good bit of his old, kinder self is still pretty prevalent he can be downright fucking mean if provoked. Again, worse than before, and it doesn't take much these days! I always imagined him to have more dramatic, snappy, diva aspects to his personality (even before Help Wanted 2 came out) bc hes so theatrical and intense, so basically take a Sun that's like that, crank it up to 100 and put him in a Bad Situation. That's what Round 2 Sun is like at his worst. He's not a complete lost cause though, and he's far from dumb when he does stuff, just clouded by his own judgement. He doesn't think anything's wrong with him (or does he?).
Moon doesn't really hate him like Sun hates Moon, because although he knows that what happened (the ending of the first story) is technically both of their faults he just feels guilt. They do fight a lot, though. Most of it is Moon trying his best to tell Sun that he's basically full of shit and not seeing things right after Sun starts something, but Sun's at the point where he's gotta learn by consequence. Part of the reason he's so bad is bc 1: hes been infected by the virus for so long now and 2: in his grief, anger, and resentment he's learned to live with it rather than fighting it.
But the sequel is gonna be a feel-good story! Falling in love w/ the reader all over again, i want things to get cleared up - or at least some kind of middle ground between Sun and Moon - the whole sha-bang.

I'm going to talk about one of my favorite OC's.
Which is technically connected to warehouse AU.
In warehouse AU (which I might start calling star foolery.) The Pizza flex burns down like any other after fire story. The difference is that the animatronics are able to be retrieved and rebuilt. The only problem is that due to what happened in the Pizza Plex. And also because Gregory made out alive and started telling people. Fasco kind of ran out of money. They needed a cheap start.
Which is where the name Warehouse AU comes in. Y/N in this story is just a contractor. Basically through family connections they have this giant collection of warehouses under there ownership. They didn't keep up with the family business, and so the warehouses eventually emptied out. Leaving them with a bunch of warehouses, And no real money. So they start renting out these warehouses. As long as you could pay the price you could have the warehouse for a certain number of days. A small business could build in them, sometimes it was for one night rave, other times movie producers would rent them out for a couple days. If a business built in a warehouse. And they basically had to pay rent. And that is what kept Y/N a float.
I'm going to refer to Y/N as Reina. As that was the temporary name I gave this Y/N when I first made the story.
But Fazbear's sees these warehouses and decides to buy them out. Or at least buy out one of them. Now this isn't your small shack warehouse. These are big. So they decide to basically make a mini Pizza Plex. Of course they try and sneak around the bush and get around Reyna's basic rent. So they decide to play another deal. Reina, Will be paid like any other employee. They get full jurisdiction over the robots and all the happenings and pizzaplex. Including any money gained through vending machines and other things. If they don't have to pay rent. Reina agrees. Taking it as sort of having a business of her own. Which starts the whole AU.
Now Raina already had a security system. It was a small drone with a basic AI intelligence. I'm not for it to make its own decisions, but not enough for free will or sentience. A version of this AI patrols around each of their warehouses. The one around the particular warehouse that fazbear bought out, has one of these AI that has grown to love a passerby that plays the hurdy gurdy. This little bit of information will make more sense later.
So the wonderful start of the AU happens. Fazbear builds a mini pizza place inside of a warehouse. The first animatronic they send is Glam Rock Freddy and Gregory. Which they force Raina to basically adopt due to wanting to stop him from spreading slander on their name. Luckily Glam Rock Freddy mostly takes over child care. Raina is basically just buying for his basic needs.
Next they send in models from other pizza plexes. Or well, models over either discontinued or have been in a state of disrepair until the pizzaplex saw it fit. They send in Glam Rock foxy and Glam Rock Bonnie. Bunny comes with a little bit of trauma of being basically dismantled. While foxy is a brand new animatronic who doesn't know anything other than his basic programming.
They then send in music man. As music man was able to protect most of his hardware. Music Man unfortunately doesn't have as much room and movement as he once did. Only able to move in between his parts and service, a smaller arcade area, and the stage. Otherwise he is alright, and is playing basically what he did before.
Then we get to the part that this whole AU was based around. Sun and Moon get sent in. Sun and Moon being the only ones left that actually had the virus. Which unfortunately becomes Reina's problem. Otherwise sun and moon remain the same. Having daycare protocols and some leftover theater protocols.
Now everybody arrives with their own a bit of surprise. Since Reina decided to own basically what the animatronics did, They were the ones that turned them on. What's results in them having most of the jump scares. Freddy came in online. Foxy of course had just turned online, and therefore didn't have much of a scare. Bonnie is scared the hell out of her because he awoke screaming. Music Man was relatively calm but holy crap that's a giant robot. And sun and moon tried to kill her. Fun times waking up all these animatronics.
Now I've got to explain how the warehouse is outfitted before we get into any of the fun stuff of the story. Basically it is an extra large warehouse with an outside area that has been transformed. Inside there is a double decker arcade. Entryway. Stage. Daycare with outside access. A Fazer blast. A mini version of Rockstar row. And a parts and service that can handle both small and large animatronics. Outside there is a pirate's cove themed bumper boats. There is also a outside theater. Along with the outside portion of the daycare. And a good mini golf section.
Now we have a description of the layout of the warehouse. Every animatronics gets reassigned to an area. Freddy gets to basically stay up on stage, and is a walk around attraction. Foxy gets the bumper boats. Bonnie takes over the mini golf. Music Man of course gets the arcade. Sun gets the daycare and theater. Moon gets the daycare and fazer blast.
As you can tell. There's a little bit of swapping. Mostly in the fact that the daycare attendant gets to have to split between two different attractions. Of which third thing. Everybody has to go up on the stage for performances. Mostly at particular times, But nonetheless they have to go up there. Meaning the poor daycare attendants have to take care of four areas.
No of course the daycare attendants are extremely concerned about the fact that they are taking over four areas. The only really have coding for two of those areas. The daycare and theater. Fazer blast is fun to moon, but not something he knows. And playing up on the stage is completely unknown to them. None of them have held an instrument in their lives. They had a music box, and that was enough.
Which gets onto my OC! In this world, The virus is connected to the security protocol. And while Rayna is able to remove the virus entirely. Sun and Moon still correlate that security protocol with bad stuff. This causes the conundrum of Sun and Moon not being able to do their security protocol. Plus rounding up around the fact that they don't know how to play instruments in a rock-like fashion. Causes a big issue as Reina needs to get them on the stage or else fazco will get on her ass.
So she decides to be sneaky. She takes her lovely security drone. Which already has most of the security protocols for the warehouse in it. And plugs it into Sun and Moon. It basically takes all of Sun and Moon's security protocols into itself. Therefore making the third personality ‘eclipse’. But in this AU. They are called Dusk or Dawn. Dim together.
Sun and Moon are happy that the security protocol has moved over to Dim. The only problem is that dim is very much a newborn AI. In their mind is also a stagnant AI. Meaning they have to teach it and extend its parameters. Which sun and moon start doing. Teaching them how to properly scold children, while also watching from the sideline as it does it's security programs for the warehouse.
Nice little thing though. Because of the way Dim was implemented. They are inadvertently adopting Sun and Moon's AI. Meaning that dim is actually learning and becoming sentient. This doesn't really become apparent until sun and moon spot Dim ignoring his duties to listen to that passer by play his music.
Reporting this to Reyna who, despite being surprised by the security drone gaining sentence. Doesn't really care. They had a struggle to get Dim to play an instrument for Sun and Moon. So maybe he can just learn from the passerby. Which happens. They buy a hurdy-gurdy and tell Dim to learn how to play the instrument from that passerby. Which they do. The interactions between Dim and this passerby increasing their intelligence and sentience all the more.
Eventually Dim is just kind of considered another AI. Another one of the gang. And everyone basically learns of Dims existence as a sentient AI. Unfortunately this causes problems with fazbear. As they never said Raina could create her own AI with their technology. Luckily Rena's got a trick up her sleeve. It's her warehouse. Do they want to lose their warehouse? Fazbear decides no. They do not want to lose their warehouse. So Dim exists and becomes a part of the gang.
That's sort of turned into a history of the beginning of the warehouse AU and its world. Instead of just talking about Dim. So I'm probably just going to make another post explaining Dim's abilities and looks. But this is a good history of how they came into existence. And yes, at first I just called them an eclipse like. But eventually I realized this was basically my daycare attendant OC. So I bite the bullet and just call them an OC.
And I love them for being my OC.

yo- take this ask as an opportunity to drop some RB&FR trivia that maybe you don't think could be brought up normally. or just. brainrot in general. can be written if that's faster!
I am fuming so THANK YOU, not too sure how I can format this but I'll tag it as ramblings :) writing it down is faster so I'll do that
RB&FR timeline is a bit blurry for when it takes place but things have overgrown. Buildings that aren't taken care of are now overrun with animals or rogue bots.
Sun and Moon are separate animatronics. Both coming from different pizza plexes/pizzarias, and both Respectively lost their version of Sun&Moon (either through a corrupt code or wipe :) )
The parasitic Fungi or Afton virus, can effect both organic life AND bots. Different effects depending on the infected.
Daylight plays a crucial role in survival in RB&FR
There are stories around Sun&Moon, either speaking of robots who take in lost children or fears of Animatronics who steal them.
It's a known taboo to talk about the undead (it's a sore subject and religious conflict)
Y/n is investigating the origins or more about the undead, "Know your enemy like your friend" deal over here. So naturally Y/n is isolated socially as well.
In this AU Sun&Moon still distrust maintenance and anyone messing with their hardware. In consequence of getting taken apart or left for dead (it takes REAL trust for them to give consent to Y/n)
Children are often abandoned by smaller groups because of the vulnerability they pose in an emergency. Results in one of the two Animatronics staying with the kids while the other goes searching/guarding.
Being nomadic is pretty normal here. Moving around place to place instead of staying in one spot.
That's all can think of at the moment BUT you can add onto or what you interpret from this :)!

I think my favourite part of your AU is Luke being Poe's grandson
Something about it scratches my brain juuust right
:D me too! i'm so glad people like their dynamic as much as i like writing it, i honestly wasn't expecting them to work so well as grandpa and grandson when i first thought up the details of the AU
i think a big part of it for me is that they're from very different generations but they're both pretty technologically inclined; luke knows plenty about social media and algorithms, while poe's more knowledgeable about coding, hardware maintenance, and not clicking on obvious virus links lol
Tumblr media
they've both got a lot to teach each other, and neither of them are afraid to get sassy about it, so they're pretty fun to write haha

fuck it bell’s hells leverage au
all of these people, endless collateral damage under the thumbs of the rich and powerful, come together in a found family story that features several heists and the opposition of powerful people. a group of not-totally moral people looking to help when they can. sound familiar?
they don’t all fit into easy categories. but this is where i see them going.
ashton: hitter. very much the eliot spencer, but in more of a punk rock way. less traditional masculinity and more dealing with the repercussions of being beat up on and abandoned for an entire lifetime. okay at stealing because it came from necessity, but more efficient at doing their ’extremely useful damage’, much to their internal displeasure. was working with the nobodies and got burned--cracking the shell after that takes a lot of time.
fearne: thief. very much like parker, but better at the flirting. her upbringing, much like parker, plays into her lack of moral code and attachment to the first person/people she opened up to. her general chaos makes doing heists a fun thing for her, but she starts running into responsibility as her loose cannon nature is matched by the rest of the team. known for a lot of arson and random unexplained animals in places that they should not be.
imogen: grifter. gets a shitton of information passively and communicates it throughout the team. their main liaison with other people e.g. clients, other groups. started out trying to find her mom by digging further into a research study and stumbled on something bigger than she had ever imagined. starts questioning whether what the RV is doing isn’t so bad, but gets her head on straight after realizing she’s compromised. starts using that inborn charisma to get people to not question her. maybe they do a job where she pretends to be a fake psychic but actually is reading minds?
laudna: hacker. came into it after being used to fake vex’s death. don’t question the details--it gets too complicated and she doesn’t like to talk about it. lots of little bots e.g. sashimi & pate. i imagine that she’s still creepy and does a lot of the intimidation work that chetney & ashton don’t get to. becomes a ghost in the machine. i think it would be quite interesting to consider delilah as a computer virus that laudna just carries around on her laptop all the time. maybe laudna’s in a coma for a bit and they notice something’s up with all the machines that she’s hooked up to.
fcg: grifter-assassin turned hacker. (haha the robot is the hacker very funny) only for technology though: hardison and breanna do a ton of other stuff that deserve other titles. it’s more coming into play with their recent activity with the warders. realistically they play the role of a grifter/assassin to begin with, and start to come into other specialties later on, like working with food and with hardware, much like hardison did.
chetney: thief/mastermind. he does a lot of group reconnaissance and the necessary sneaky stuff to get them into and through places and less stealing than fearne does. will randomly fuck with people to get into their heads, but sometimes it’s only for his amusement. smart enough to influence the strategy of the group (in battle at least). his old toy mafia sets them up for couple of takedowns and potential for a sterling-type character, as well as past partner interactions the way we saw with eliot.
orym: hitter/mastermind combo. general moral compass--he points them where they need to go next and keeps the group on track to do what they need to do. in this scenario, he’s not like nate ford in terms of seeking revenge, but more searching for answers outside of the system. he just also does 200 crunches every morning and will beat the shit out of people who attack/slow the team down. i imagine he would do the thing eliot did pretty often and go be a generic background person in order to get on location and do recon/remove obstacles. i can’t see him being antagonistic to keyleth and the ashari, so maybe it starts with him taking a sabbatical from his work with them and getting a loose mission to look into the activities of the ruby vanguard, and he runs into the rest of the group over the course of the investigation.
no one really plans the heists alone--they do big debriefs together that never result in the plans that actually get executed. lots of on the spot ideas and impulses--the orgy plan definitely becomes a contingency that is closer to the forefront than some people would like.
and of course, the members that aren’t with them any longer:
dorian: grifter, but in more of a distraction way than an intimidation way. multitalented, so he ends up doing face work the way sophie did. eventually has to return home to deal with his family crisis and reunites with the crown keepers, who are more sent in to cause chaos in the lives of many people.
bertrand: old gentleman thief, out of his prime. regales them all with tales of his youth and old exploits very often. gets them into shit just like nate did, but is murdered quietly in an alley after their first heist, which sets the tone and gets the group into investigation along with the general heist shenanigans.
dusk/yu: thief/grifter. rival to fearne, though she’s not aware at first. successfully manipulates the group into working with them until they find the calloways. working under the unseelie court, which is maybe an organized crime syndicate? who knows. they’re very good at body transformations by way of prosthetics, and do a good deal of infiltration.

ok ok ok so new AU idea ramble incoming I'm tossing under the cut!!!!
So Y/N is in like a bad accident as a child that renders them mute and dealing with life-long chronic stuff, right? So they function and cope through it growing up but as they get older, things get a bit more difficult for them to care for themselves properly, plus since they're mute they have to use sign language. Family isn't an option and they have a close friend that helps them often but Y/N hates to ask for help.
One day Y/N and their friend are like out and about at a kind-of flea market type of thing, and come across this badly damaged robot (DCA) that someone is selling, a little bit expensive but they're like badly damaged and rusted. Limbs missing and hardware broken beyond repair. Y/N jokes about getting them to have as a nice companion and help them out but moves on. Their friend, caring about Y/N and being a bit tech savvy decides to buy it as a gift and surprise Y/N, thinking they could both help fix them up together.
Y/N and their friend slowly repair the boys and get them some-what functional. But unfortunately they end up having a broken voice box so Y/N and the boys have a bit of a hard time communicating but they grow to be friends despite that over time.
Of course the entire time this is going on, Sun and Moon have no memories about the daycare, or the pizzaplex, since their memory has been wiped (and it's obvious they probably have been decommissioned but also Y/N and their friend have never heard of anything Fazbear Entertainment related either). The boys start remembering fragments of memories, which then leads to them to slowly putting them together like a puzzle and unlocking the remnants of the virus still in their system. 😌✨

I will HAPPILY “suffer” affection so long as you are prepared for Retaliation <3 !!
Also! Brain starting thinking more thoughts again. Sun and Moon don’t eat and, presumably, can’t get sick, either, but is it possible for only One of them to get injured, in any way? Would there ever be a situation where one of them has to stay “awake” for longer to let the other heal up? Regarding injuries as a General, do they have to deal with any of their Own repairs, or does HQ help out with that?
The fics also made me think… do Sun and/or Moon ever talk about *each other*? Has y/n heard much about their Other tenant and Other rival from the two of them, or do they tend to keep private on the other? -🌻 Daye
AARGH NO AFFECTIONATE RETALIATION, MY ONLY WEAKNESS!
*melts into a puddle*
*puddles don't talk*
*end of reply*
Okay yea joke over we all know I can't shut up about these guys <3
Any problem affecting only one of them would be a software issue, not hardware, and I will admit I'm not sure how far that will be explored in this AU, given that I don't care much for the virus in the context of this
Regarding repairs we are. MMMMMM very close to things I cannot talk about yet, for spoiler reasons (: I will say that HQ has connections to help them, as they helped Robin get settled in a hospital, however, they are rather self-sufficient!
And no, mostly they don't! Y/N is completely unaware there is another tenant, always being out of the house themself when Moon would be home/ Moon being the sneaky type anyway, and while Sun tried to somewhat mention him, the entire situation got away from him and he didn't feel like fixing it. Left it up to Moon to introduce himself, and doesn't actively talk about him. There are slip ups - the "our" instead of "my" kitchen in the drabble as example! But Y/N assumes there's only one tenant, all evidence points towards one person only, so they don't really notice these
Moon assumed Robin knew about Sun, given that their tag team setup isn't secret, then realized they don't due to working night shifts about 95% of the time and not really talking to other agents, and decided it's way funnier not telling them and letting them figure it out themself. It's gonna bite him in his metallic ass soon enough though <3

4 skips!
So, this one turned out interesting - I used my "Big List of Favorites" playlist, and four shuffled skips in was Poe - Control. Which has been associated in my mind for YEARS with an OC whose story I've never written, mostly because I've never quite managed to work out all the details of the plot.
But, she's the one who appears in my head when this song plays, so I decided to try to put her down on the page, at least a little.
Original fic here - a space opera setting, one I'm slowly (VERY slowly) adapting from an AU fanfic I wrote in ... 2008? Thereabouts.
~~
Oh no, Lark thinks, you're not winning that easily.
"Return to previous level," she tells the computer, as she reaches up to move a piece of code from one screen to another. "We'll find a different entrance."
"Fourth level," the computer announces, a moment later. Its voice is cheerful and feminine, and Lark mostly tries not to think about how much it sounds like Serena. She built it that way, but sometimes it's hard to remember why.
Her hand reaches up to touch her cheek reflexively. She no longer feels a phantom ache around the irregular ridges in her skin, not while awake. The feel of them grounds her.
"Move to position 3509.4," she tells the computer, "and deploy at half speed."
Gareth's team built this security system. They're better than the last time, she notes, but they still won't be better than her. Honestly, Gareth should thank her for all the training she's giving his people. No training simulation would teach them how to code a security system better than trying to keep a step ahead of a hacker. And Gareth himself taught Lark the basics, all those years ago.
She shakes her head. "Why the nostalgia today?" she asks herself.
"I do not recognize that command."
"Disregard, I'm not talking to you." Lark slaps her own cheek lightly. "Let's see what this section looks like."
Another hour passes without her notice, as she analyzes the code, line by line, symbol by symbol, looking for the weak point. She's almost resigned to pulling back to the previous level again when she finally sees it - a simple juxtaposition, two symbols switched. It's a mistake anyone could make, even the most expert of programmers. It doesn't affect the way the code runs at all; what it does, though, is give someone like her a millimeter of space to squeeze through.
A millimeter is all she needs.
It takes several more hours, but the work from here is a well worn path for Lark. The virus she leaves will do its job the next time the system reboots, sometime within the next twenty-eight hours. At that time, more than two dozen people will receive a notice that their debts to Den-Tarr have been forgiven. The Den-Tarr system will have no record of those debts ever existing. And more than two dozen people, along with their families, will have the means to save a bit of money and get the hell off of their miserable planet.
It would have been nice to free more, she thinks, but this was as large a group she could manage without exposing herself. She'll come back later, she promises. Her next target is another recruiting company, a way to stop the exploitative assholes from ever funneling the desperate to this planet in the first place.
Oh, yeah, and to take the Den-Tarr recruiting fees for herself. Her hardware doesn't pay for itself, after all.
"Process complete," the computer says. "Execute?"
"Yes."
As her primary screen goes blank, Lark sees her own reflection - and for a brief second, another face imposes itself on top. A hallucination, she knows it, but she still sneers at the memory of it.
"Hi Mom," she murmurs. "Get fucked."

All-New Ghost Rider: Corporation Rim AU
Alberto and Juliana lead a relatively comfortable life as colonists on a corporate-owned planet, working the standard 14-hour days for 9 days out of 10, making enough to afford shelter and food for their two children, and making interest payments on the loan they took out to pay for the extensive cranial augments Gabe needed to compensate for his cerebral palsy. Then little Robbie jumps off the roof and cracks his head open.
Alberto and Juliana go to an independent loan shark to get Robbie released from the hospital after his stay in the company med system, and to get Robbie his own set of extensive cranial augments to compensate for his brain damage and missing eye. Robbie is still recovering when negotiations with the loan shark turn sour and his parents disappear.
Flash forward thirteen years. Robbie is functional, if emotionally stunted and missing huge gaps from his memory. Gabe is physically alright due to his augments supporting his motor control, but still intellectually disabled; with specialized education he could learn to use his augments to compensate for some of his cognitive deficits, but that costs money Robbie doesn’t have, and he’s always going to need support. The responsibility for paying off Gabe’s augments has fallen on Robbie; if Robbie can’t do it, then Gabe will be transported to a mining planet as manual labor. (So would Robbie. And Robbie definitely does not develop a guilt complex about this.) So Robbie gets a job smuggling contraband (counterfeit goods, raw recycler stock, spyware-free datachips). His augments, since they’re unusually invasive and he got them so young, make him better at interfacing with shuttles than most other pilots, and he gets a reputation as “the kid who can fly anything.”
Our story begins when Robbie’s shuttle is hit by sentient, self-replicating, self-optimizing killware (virus designed to brick hardware and destroy artificial intelligences) deployed by a rival smuggling organization. This killware deletes Robbie’s shuttle’s bot pilot out from under him. Robbie is already linked in and he compensates quickly, but he doesn’t know what’s happening when the killware uploads itself to his augments.
This killware has existed in one form or another for decades, replicating and tinkering with itself, and it has become capable of emotions like curiosity and fear of its own death. Robbie’s augments offer it a rich organic sensorium that it likes very much. It decides to stay in Robbie’s head, hiding its presence from debuggers, and eventually figures out how to use Robbie’s feed interface to hack. Shuttles, bots, surveillance systems, anything. The killware’s style is a lot more smash-and-burn than Murderbot’s, and they rapidly start drawing attention.
The killware doesn’t like Robbie’s shit life any more than Robbie does, and when it eventually reveals its presence, it proposes that Robbie escape the colony planet and become a space pirate. After all, Robbie is a better host than some server sitting in a box on a smuggler’s space shuttle, and his augments extend into so many different brain regions that, given enough time, the killware could take over his body and assume his identity. Might as well make it an identity worth stealing. The only human the killware has ever encountered with a similar vulnerability...is Gabe.

What can I say, I got inspired to combine the Strings ‘verse with the Siblings AU group chat chapter. The AR emails were also a source of inspiration. I can only hope you enjoy my gift.
Is this normal for Monty to act like this?
-Samantha Brown
No, this has never happened before. He usually trashes his room, and that’s it. He’s never smashed up anything else.
-Albert Robertson
Well, we need to get him checked out NOW. I really don’t want anyone getting hurt by him, especially any guests.
-Jacob Evans
If he hurts a guest, there’ll be hell to pay from the higher ups.
-Lily Dunlap
Forget the higher ups, can you imagine if he injures a child?
-Henry Sanchez
Geez, I can’t even fathom ANY of them hurting a kid. I mean, I know Monty and Roxy are new, but I loved those Fazbear animatronics when I was little.
-Edward Chong
Same here.
-Dylan Green
Agreed.
-Samantha Brown
Yup.
-Alan Brooks
____________________________
I think we need to look at the others.
-Amy Lee
What’s wrong with them?
-Dylan Green
Well, Chica is spending a lot of time in the trash.
-Amy Lee
Remind me again why a robot needs to eat?
-Samantha Brown
That way people order more food, especially after working out at Mazercise. Pretty clever, to be honest.
-Dylan Green
Yeah, clever. Except for the part where she glitches and eats all kinds of filth, requiring some poor sap whose initials are H.S. to scrub her down every day. Anyway, so what if she’s digging around in garbage?
-Henry Sanchez
She’s not eating anything now. She just sits in the middle of the trash pile.
-Amy Lee
Great. Cleaning her up was always a pain, but now it’s going to be infinitely worse. I mean, have you seen what goes into our garbage cans?
-Henry Sanchez
Come on, I’m eating dinner in an hour.
-Alan Brooks
What's wrong with Roxy?
-Lily Dunlap
She spends even more time in front of the mirror, and she keeps cleaning herself. If she keeps it up, she’ll wreck her paintwork.
-Amy Lee
So we’ve one bot that needs constant cleaning, and another that needs to be stopped from cleaning. Perfect.
-Henry Sanchez
Also, Monty keeps trying to fight the endoskeletons now.
-Amy Lee
Rather metal and wires get damaged then flesh, right?
Yes, but his aggression is still a problem. Not to mention everyone else.
-Amy Lee
Freddy seems okay.
-Mark Chong
Freddy keeps twitching. A LOT.
-Amy Lee
Maybe it’s a hardware problem.
-Dylan Green
We’re checking him now to see if that’s the case.
-Amy Lee
At least the Daycare Attendants and the DJ are all right.
-Mark Chong
Those two can’t run the band!
-Dylan Green

We need to make sure this place hasn’t been compromised. I’m worried a virus or something like that might be affecting the animatronics.
From: Amy Lee
To: Jacob Evans
Well, we ran a check on them and our systems and came up with nothing. Besides, who would want to hack into this place?
From: Jacob Evans
To: Amy Lee
I can think of why or how anyone would want to get in our programs, but all the same, I’m going to bring in the night guard and tell her to keep her eyes open for anything. What’s her name again?
From: Amy Lee
To: Jacob Evans
Vanessa. Gotta warn you, she can be a lot to handle sometimes.

Hello Vanessa, I was wondering if you could come to the Pizzaplex during the day and talk to me.

From: Jacob Evans
To: Vanessa A.
I need to talk to you about the animatronics. There are also some security concerns I would like to address.
From: Vanessa A.
To: Jacob Evans
Could you just ask me about them now?
From: Jacob Evans
To: Vanessa A.
I’d rather talk to you in person. It’s pretty important.
From: Vanessa A.
To: Jacob Evans
I’ve got some personal stuff that’s making me REALLY busy. Is it that important?
From: Jacob Evans
To: Vanessa A.
Yes, I’m afraid it is. I can give you a few days, but I need to talk to you.
From: Vanessa A.
To: Jacob Evans
Okay, I’ll be there.

From: Jacob Evans
To: Amy Lee
I just finished talking to Vanessa. You sure you didn’t get her confused with someone else?
From: Amy Lee
To: Jacob Evans
What do you mean?
From: Jacob Evans
To: Amy Lee
She was nothing like what you described her. She seemed pretty nervous the whole time, to be honest.
From: Amy Lee
To: Jacob Evans
Well, you are her boss.
From: Jacob Evans
To: Amy Lee
Also, her responses sounded kind of strange. Like she’d been rehearsing them.
From: Amy Lee
To: Jacob Evans
Don’t tell me you think she’s involved in whatever's going on with the band.
From: Jacob Evans
To: Amy Lee
I got the feeling that she was hiding something, but I’m not going to accuse her of anything without solid proof. It’s not like we can ask anyone to keep an eye on her.
From: Amy Lee
To: Jacob Evans
So what happened?
From: Jacob Evans
To: Amy Lee
Well, I just told her to be extra cautious during her shift and to keep a close eye on the animatronics. She said that she would. Say, do you know if she has any relatives?
From: Amy Lee
To: Jacob Evans
No, she pretty much keeps to herself. The rest of us don’t see her much anyways. Why?
From: Jacob Evans
To: Amy Lee
She came in with some kid. She must mean a lot to him. He hugged her before AND after I talked to her. She was only in my office for a few minutes.
From: Amy Lee
To:Jacob Evans
Hm. Must be a cousin or something like that. Guess he’s one of those clingy kids.
From: Jacob Evans
To: Amy Lee
Yeah, he hugged her pretty tightly. I think he’s pretty demanding, too. He tugged her hand, and she followed. You sure you got the right person?
From: Amy Lee
To: Jacob Evans
Yes. It has been a while since I talked to her, though. I guess people can change.
____________________________
Well, the band’s doing much better these days.
-Alan Books
IKR? I’m glad to see it.
-Samantha Brown
Tell me about it. I really thought they were going to hurt someone for a while there.
-Mark Chong
This wasn’t going to be a birthday gift. I’d been working on this for a while, and when I saw it was your birthday, I couldn't resist the urge to turn this into a birthday present. It was also an experiment for me, telling a story in this way. If you have any questions about anything, please ask! Thank you for your writings, and for letting me play around with them.

HELLO??? I LOVE THIS? THANK YOU SO MUCH, THIS WAS A DELIGHT TO READ!
Outsider POV is one of my favorite tropes, and it was a treat to read some chat stuff that lines up with the strings 'verse! I loved the confusion about the random clingy child, lol. So good!
Thank you for this gift, friend! And I’m always thrilled to see others play in this sandbox!

some half thoughts about how a canon-adjacent Sister RElocation AU could unfold (as in the AU starts, but instead of the Funrocks all arriving and battle of the bands ensues, Lols and Bonnet arrive and then game as usual)
Bonnet and Lolbit are still not fully synced with the Faznetwork, so they are not affected by the OTA update that uploaded the virus into the other animatronics. as a result, they were both "quarantined" before the update; Bonnet in Bonnie Bowl, Lolbit in...uh...idk actually. but Freddy's reaction to the OTA update distracted from Vanny doing a direct hardwire update to those two.
SO, Gregory finds Lols while to try to find the hurt Freddy to help him; they fill him in on what's going on the best they can, and they end up guiding him through the Fazwatch while Freddy is having connection issues. when they end up in Parts and Services, there's some hardware missing to properly fix Freddy, so that's an extra fetch quest for Gregory to complete alone, leading to him crossing paths with Vanny more, who has realized that the Funrocks are loose too. Lols ends up staying in Parts and Services after Freddy is fixed, to finish the hardware repairs and also to try to find the route source of the virus to take it out, so Freddy and Gregory go on the usual parts hunt.
now the main divergences:
if you go the Fazerblaster/Chica voice box route, you run into Bonnet in Bonnie Bowl. she's not a threat, but Vanny does show up. Gregory gets to hide, but sees the scene of Vanny kinda violently attack to infect Bonnet, before dragging her off (with some comment about "it's always the rabbits" or something). and then from then on, Bonnet is now also a roaming threat, similar to Moon. when Gregory gets back to Parts and Services with the voice box and tells Lols about Bonnet, they decide they have to leave to go check on her; later on, Lols contacts him through the watch revealing that they too have gotten infected, but the main source of corruption seems to be coming from Roxy Raceway.
if you go the Fazcamera/Monty's claws route, when Gregory arrives to Parts and Services with the claws, Lols becomes very angry and immediately ditches him. thus when Gregory goes back out, he'll run into Bonnet who reveals that Lols has been corrupted and is now hunting him down too. Lols' eyes can be harvested like Roxy's, because Lols sees the matrix code and whatnot, so similar enough. Gregory ends up having to run a maze case through the Fazcade with Lols chasing him down instead of the Roxy Raceway chase then (so I guess instead Bonnet goes to the Raceway to fills in the "the power drain is from down there" line, because Vanny catches her and drags her down there still but she's slightly more coherent)
onto Ruin!
Cassie finds Bonnet locked down in the Daycare Theater's storage I guess, having gone a little nutty being so isolated. she's colored herself half blue, having split herself between herself and her imaginary missing brother. dunno how Cassie resolves her...she lets her out, so Bonnet kinda runs loose now, but isn't really a threat...
Lols though is in the Fazcade, consumed by all the stripped game cabinet wires, plastered and strung up against the wall. Cassie probably stumbles upon them because they see Monty exiting the Fazcade randomly and is curious what that's all about despite Helpi telling her not to go near there. in reality, they are dormant; in AR though, it is a boss battle time. very similar to Greg's Fazcade maze chase, but this time there's wire tentacles that jut from the walls too. and if Cassie puts the mask in Lols' presence, it cannot be removed until the event is finished.

— — — — ☣ DAYS SINCE LAST EVENT: unknown ☣
HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? Truthfully? No one really knows. Blame is getting pointed everywhere all while no one is accepting the claim of the virus outbreak, so everyone and anyone is paranoid.
— WHERE THE STORY BEGINS: Lourdes was called back into military service three months after the outbreak started to crop up on the east coast of the United States. Upon re-entering the Marine Corps, she was promoted in rank and her unit was deployed with a heavily armed convoy to safely transport US Diplomat's to Camp David when the convoy was ambushed by people wanting extra supplies and then those people were overrun by the infected, along with the diplomats ( and their families ) and she was the only survivor of her unit. Passing out from the adrenaline rush, Lourdes woke up a few days later by herself in a fortified hardware store with a few guns, two or three months worth of extra ammo, a machete, and a rucksack.
— SAFE ZONES: Areas that have been fortified by groups or individuals after being cleared of the undead so that those wandering in need of rest / somewhere to stay can be safe.
Iris Island – Somewhere off the coast of North Carolina ( permission granted by sloane madison-pierce )
Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, Connecticut | was moved onto an anchored floating raft & only accessible by a rope bridge. The survivors calling this safe zone home leave part of the bridge in the water until they can determine that you aren't being followed / chased.
Perryton, Texas | moreso near the border of Oklahoma. This safe zone doesn't trade often with outsiders but if they do? You'll end up running for them to get supplies til the leader decides to release you. They have UV lights ( lamps, flashlights ) here to scare off the infected.
Sisters, Oregon | From a population 2,100 down to 650 when the outbreak hit. Survivor's in this safe zone steal from other towns, ambushes convoys & murder outsiders. They also have one of the largest trading posts in the country, no one knows where the other is.
— TYPES OF INFECTED: Aside from the standard type of zombie that will chase you down, there are special types of infected roaming around that are worse than the rest.

( She will put the swimsuits in the boiling water for a few minutes and then let them dry over the shower rod in the bathroom. ) ☣: Demolishers show up just after sunset and drop off a Screamer in one spot, before shuffling off to another location to put Howlers down. It is safer to stay inside or remain completely unseen if you're out past sunset! ☣: All of the Northeast, along with three states in the southeast ( West Virginia, Virginia & District Of Columbia ) experience winter – heavy snowfalls & lots of ice due to no one being around to clear it away. Most, if not all survivors use the snow to boil down for drinking water. ☣: Salt water doesn't freeze over - please be mindful of the banks of any harbor area. Irradiated sea creatures ( otherwise known as Mirelurks ) dwell there. Their nests are easily spotted by the dinosaur sized eggs in the ground, and they will attack if you approach the nest / they spot you in the open. Their approach is easy to detect – the scuttling can be heard on the ice. ☣: Weather is VERY unpredictable – obviously. Rain can happen for a month straight, sometimes longer – or it can be that way with the heat. "Mild" seasons like spring and autumn last only a week or two in between the rainy season and the hot season. The south doesn't get snow, that's more up north – but it will be as cold as a desert in the south no matter the "season" during the night. ☣: Some national parks are still overrun with infected – mostly Glacier, Zion & Death Valley – the others aren't as overrun but there are plenty of decomposing bodies / rotting bodies still around. Because maintenance of the parks completely stopped, trails and buildings have become overgrown by plant life and some animal life as well. ☣: Pregnancy/having babies is at a steady decline; that's no surprise. One would think because now there's no mass produced protection - the numbers would be growing. Definitely not the case while in the middle of an apocalypse; food shortages / proper nutrition, proper medical care, clothing, not to mention the undead around almost every corner. A fair number of women who have survived the outbreak have figured out that mother nature has decided to take its course -- allowing animal life to reproduce but let human kind take a back seat for now. ( Most mother's do not survive childbirth now, and sometimes the babies don't either. )

added; October 20th, 2022 — York, Nebraska ! – population, 3k. — This safe zone is a HAVEN for those who have nowhere else to turn. No ulterior motives here, everyone helps everyone out. A twelve foot tall fence surrounds what remains of York University, guard towers having walkways attached to them that go six feet out to patrol at night — with UV lights dangling under each walkway. All manner of infected roam the streets here – including spitters, screamers, demolishers, feral ghouls, howlers, night hunters, and whatever else irradiated beasts roam freely. By choice — men and women live separate from each other, as they interact plenty throughout the little community these survivors share. ( however, just because they live separately doesn't mean anything stops them from being intimate – many know of couples who sneak off to the abandoned clock tower at the far end of the old campus or some of the old classrooms. ) Weapons are allowed here but only used outside the walls of the safe zone. Disputes are handled by fighting — unless it's two older citizens, they are usually given duties that will keep them apart if they are too old to fight. Sometimes, citizens end up leaving this safe zone because the fighting doesn't always quell the fighting. With law enforcement and the penal code utterly abolished, weed / cannabis grows legally in York safely. — The weed grown in the York settlement has two classifications; A: half the potency, will still get you high but not make you too high where you can't complete tasks. B: full potency, also laced with remnants of magic mushrooms — leaves users in a high for days sometimes a full week. not suggested or even given to first time users.
