This is one of Greg Stafford’s Saurintology pamphlets, from 1994. It’s just a single folded, photocopied sheet. As you can see from the cover there, it claims Saurintology is the world’s oldest religion. It seems to be, on some level, a send-up of Scientology, but the energy to me is extremely in line with the Church of the Sub-Genius.
Inside is a survey about favorite dinosaurs, a note that “Trilobites: Deeper Wisdom” is coming soon, exhortations to get in touch with your Dinosaur Self and this doozy of a quote: “Saurintology Teaching Number One: Extinction is forever. Do better than us.”
Fun, then suddenly poignant.

Greg Gillespie, author of Barrowmaze and other OSR titles, has launched a Kickstarter for his Dragonslayer Role-Playing Game.
I've mentioned before that many of us who started with a "Basic" edition of D&D never actually played AD&D as written, but added AD&D's best new rules to Basic's cleaner structure. That's exactly what Dragonslayer is meant to be by design. From his pitch:
Most of us kept using the Basic Engine (elegantly restated by Tom Moldvay in 1981) and grafted the chrome of First Edition onto our existing style of play. We used First Edition spells, character classes, monsters, and all the adventures. We left behind lame rules that bogged down gameplay and made it feel like actuarial science (for example, counting segments for spells or weapon-speed factors, among others). This wasn't Moldvay Basic and it wasn't First Edition. This was the edition we all played. We called it .75 or halfway between BX and 1E. This is the ruleset that I've played for decades. This is how I play medieval fantasy role-playing games. This is the way…I want to play fantasy role-playing games.
(KS runs through September 29, 2023)

Saw you post about Reign's character generation. Could you explain in brief how it works exactly? I've heard lots of praise for it but never bothered to figure out how it actually works and would love to hear it from you.
So Reign's random lifepath chargen is fun at least partly because it's weirdly transparent about how it works.
The default character creation in Reign is point based. Starting level characters get 55 points to build on.
What one roll chargen does is set a point cost for each die- 5 points, so for the default character creation, you roll 11d10, guaranteeing you always have at least one matching set- 2 of a single number.
(Reign's an ORE game so it's all about matching sets of d10s)
Each number has a sort of theme to it- 1s may be about being a thief or beggar king type, for example, and as you get more 1s you get skills and stat increases relevant to that. 2s may be about being a culturally appropriate wizard, and you get spells and attunement to a magic school, etc. 3s, 4s and 5 could be a fighting style- 3 could be archery, 4 about being militia soldier and 5 could be themed around being a axe-wielding berserker.
Etc.
So you roll a a lot of 1s and 3s and you become a stealth archer, manifested by the will of Todd Howard.
but you might ask 'what about the spare dice that don't have matches?'
They're still worth points, and this is often where the weird lifepath events comes in. Stray dice have their own chart, often similarly themed to the matching sets but not necessarily aligned with them, and usually are tied to single event. Maybe you roll a single two, and instead of being a wizard, you were nearly killed by one once, so you've got counterspell, eerie, and relevant advantage.
Since you roll this all at once, you use the pieces to assemble a backstory, picking the order that appeals to you.

I made some Gifs (haven’t figured out how to make them go together into one little clip yet but whatever. Gifs it is for now.
This is Greg, the mimic. Greg is big now and it constantly being a menace to his adoptive Party/Family but this is the start of how they met.
Tumblr media
Baby Greg was hiding in a cave all alone when suddenly. This pretty thing bounced into his little hole.
Tumblr media
Now obviously Greg, being just a Baby Mimic, was enraptured by said shiny thing and promptly ate it! It was Pretty and Shiny and Magic! What do you expect from just a little mimic?!
Only Oh No!
Tumblr media
In reaches something big and scary and alive!
Did his shiny thing belong to the big warm being? What if they want it back? What if they get angry?
Greg Panics!!
….
I haven’t made a gif for the next part yet but basically he’s takes the form of his new Shiny Thing and hitches a ride with the party.
They are so nice! Killing all the big scary things and keeping Greg safe! They even give him more shiny things sometimes!
(The party is very aggravated that their loot keeps disappearing for some reason. And sometimes their Light Orb appears in places they did not leave it?? Did it get cursed when they dropped it in that dungeon?)
Greg is very pleased with this new family of his!

This Month on the Literal Cat Podcast (December '23)
Tumblr media
I'd like to take a moment to thank everyone for a great November, it was our 2nd busiest month on record, and we owe that to all y'all.
Now time to forget about all that because it's December, baby! There's New Episodes In the Month!
On December 13, we're joined by Greg Carrobis, who graciously volunteered to fill in for Austin on the condition we do D. Vincent Baker's Dogs in the Vineyard. We did try to make this character work outside the default system as much as possible, so it should be DOGS-compatible!
Then, on December 27, Julian Kay joins us to discuss his own game, Mutants in the Now, a new take on the classic TMNT RPG! Don't worry, our cat is still pretty literal in this episode, even if it is a mutant!

Behold my little men I made
Greetings. This week (also known as 1 hour ago) I have recorded a little bit of messing around with the NPCs in Greg RPG. I tried to showcase how they work on video. Here is that video.
youtube
This coming week will not be great for making this game, as the dreaded Exams are coming up soon.
Also, happy new year. May it be a peaceful one.

Better dead than Red! This week on the Vintage RPG Podcast, we take a look at the Cold War curiosity The Price of Freedom (1986). Basically Red Dawn (or Red Scare) the RPG, it seems like a serious attempt at creating a game in the mode of similar military-focused, conservatively minded box sets that were coming out at the same time. On the other hand, it’s by Greg Costikyan (Star Wars, Paranoia, Violence, Toon) and because of his work on those games, I feel like it is very much taking the piss. Just look at that gloriously ridiculous cover!

Have you played GLITTER HEARTS ?
By Greg Leatherman
Tumblr media
Glitter Hearts is an action-packed RPG in a fun filled world of everyday people who transform into powerful super heroes that fight off the forces of evil. Your character will try to find the balance between their everyday life needs and heeding the call to save the world. You and your friends will create your own hero, your own team, and even your own special mascot. With over 150 different moves to choose from, you can build your ideal magical hero that is uniquely you!
Glitter Hearts rules are easy to learn and building your own character is a simple process of making choices that fit your vision. When building a character, you will choose:
•Your everyday identity – who you are when you aren’t your heroic alter ego. •Your magical archetype – what type of hero are you? A warrior, witch, idol, defender, or tactician. •Your mystical connection – which element or emotion do you draw your power from?
And then choose your actions from there until you’ve built your hero.
While based off many popular magical girls shows, Glitter Hearts can be set in any time, place, or world that you can imagine. All you need to play is 3-6 players, a pair of six-sided dice, and a few hours to play.
So hop in, transform yourself into the hero of your dreams, and explore the world of Glitter Hearts !

FÄNGELSEHÅLA is the Swedish word for "dungeon."
We are inviting you to play an epic adventure with the elegance of the instructions from everybody's favorite furniture store!
This tabletop role-playing game takes a minimalist approach, offering an immersive experience without the complexity. Forget thick rulebooks and intricate character sheets – FÄNG is as easy to grasp as connecting the dots in an instruction manual.
Designed for new players and one-shots that allow you to embark on quests with mechanics so straightforward that you can be up and running in minutes.
Tumblr media
Make characters within minutes using d66 tables and jump right into the adventure!
Tumblr media
You can choose from character options of Alv, Dvärg, Krigsman, Tomte and Trollkarl. (Elf, Dwarf, Warrior, Gnome & Wizard) Each character option providing some unique benefits in the game.
Each character also receives a heirloom and curse to help round out their back story and make the game play a little more exciting!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Attributes of Will, Tinker, Agile and Tuff ranging from 2-4 that are the base pool of white Action Dice as well as any extra dice added from character benefits
Top two Action Dice are totalled to beat a Difficulty score on a scale of 12
Jinx is a tie, and there is success with a complication
Use Luck Dice to improve failed Action Rolls
Tumblr media
Difficulty Scale
<6 - Don't bother rolling... characters just do it! 6 - Pretty easy, you had better be able to do it 7 - Expected outcome, unless you mess up 8 - Pretty hard task, but not surprising that you did it 9 - Damn hard, but with all your concentration, you can do it 10 - Very difficult, to the point that pulling it off is surprising 11 - Almost Impossible... don’t kill yourself in the process 12 - Impossible... best you can hope for is a Jinx
The "DOOM STACK" for Tactile Game Play
Character damage and trauma is tracked with black Doom Dice which you stack on the table - or track on character sheet if you are on a wobbly table, camping, or just think it's too gimmicky (it's fun though... you should try it!)
Difference between the Action Roll and Monster Difficulty is Doom to the loser
If your Doom Stack tumbles during battle, the character is unconscious, or you trigger a trap if you accidentally knock them over while getting a snack!
Risk using Doom Dice to help Action Rolls but then add them to your Doom Stack
Tumblr media
* Dice are not included as part of the game, but hopefully you have some extra lying around, or can find some at your Friendly Local Game Store. It's not necessary to have different colors of dice (white, black and a third color for luck), but it makes game play a bit more clear! Dice with dots tend to work better than numbers, for quickly determining success.
* The base game mechanics were inspired by the d6 system first developed for Ghostbusters RPG by Sandy Petersen, Lynn Willis & Greg Stafford, which has been foundational for dice pool mechanics across many TTRPGs
Tumblr media
Each adventure is minimal game prep from random d66 tables that provides the dungeon rooms and its contents. It's so easy that you can probably even run it without a Doomsayer (Game Master).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In true ZineQuest fashion, you will receive a 36-page saddle-stitched landscape digest-sized zine (5.5"H x 8.5"W), with black and white interior pages and heavyweight card-stock color cover and inside cover pages.
This format was chosen to lie flat and be accessible while you roll on the d66 tables. It has the bonus of looking like an instruction manual!
