Better dead than Red! This week on the Vintage RPG Podcast, we take a look at the Cold War curiosity The Price of Freedom (1986). Basically Red Dawn (or Red Scare) the RPG, it seems like a serious attempt at creating a game in the mode of similar military-focused, conservatively minded box sets that were coming out at the same time. On the other hand, it’s by Greg Costikyan (Star Wars, Paranoia, Violence, Toon) and because of his work on those games, I feel like it is very much taking the piss. Just look at that gloriously ridiculous cover!

Read Price of Freedom a while back and honestly I fell in love with Esmeralda's character! I wish we got to see more of her outside of just PoF. I need to know what happened to her.

Jack takes her place as pirate lord of the caribbean shortly after the end of PoF, how did this happen? I fear the most likely senerio is for her to have passed, but I hate to fridge a woman for no reason.

A. C. Crispin has stated she had Esmeralda's fate in mind, but Disney never commissioned her to write another novel, as well as while writing PoF she didn't need to maintain continuity with the Brethren Court series

You know what I like? That all Jack Sparrow novels are written by women.

At least then female characters feel like human beings instead of walking meat sacks of dirty thoughts and alive body parts as in men typical writing. Also, men seem less sex oriented but still feel real when a woman writes how he tries to get the attention of the lady he likes. Jack was like a puppy with Esmeralda. He just wanted her to acknowledge his existence, so he tried very hard to make himself presentable and acted all charming to make her smile.
