I spent a lot of time working out what Vetinari is. Vox Populi and Vox Phantasma - now those are easy. But what is Vetinari the voice of? The voice of the city? not really. He's just the voice of Vetinari, really.

i think one of my favourite things about the Ankh-Morpork City Watch books is that "The Crime is not The Crime."
Feet of Clay opens with a murder, but the Crime is the repression of sentient beings.
Jingo opens with an attempted assassination, but the Crime is conspiracy to commit mass murder (also known as war.)
Thud! opens with a conspiracy AND a murder, but the Crime is the the perpetuation of bigotry.
Night Watch opens with a murder, but the Crime is... well at that point the Crime is the injustice of the city.

Some say "Merry Christmas". From the world I come from, we say "Happy Hogswatch"!
. “IT'S THE EXPRESSION ON THEIR LITTLE FACES I LIKE, said the Hogfather. "You mean sort of fear and awe and not knowing whether to laugh or cry or wet their pants?" YES. NOW THAT IS WHAT I CALL BELIEF.” ― Terry Pratchett, Hogfather

No enemies had ever taken Ankh-Morpork. Well, technically they had, quite often; the city welcomed free-spending barbarian invaders, but somehow the puzzled raiders always found, after a few days, that they didn't own their own horses any more, and within a couple of months they were just another minority group with its own graffiti and food shops.

Ankh-Morpork no longer had a fire brigade. The citizens had a rather disturbingly direct way of thinking at times, and it did not take long for people to see the rather obvious flaw in paying a group of people by the number of fires they put out. The penny really dropped after Charcoal Tuesday.

the Watch of Ankh-Morpork is fascinating to me because it's the closest thing ive seen in any fiction to an actually *good* police force
but you know why?
because the thieves' and assassins' guilds and Chrysoprase's gang are the ones who hold the monopoly on violence!
the Watch is just fundamentally a different kind of institution than actual irl police is! and it works!

How early do Discworld stores start selling Hogswatch stuff? Do Ankh-Morporkians walk into the Maul in early-to-mid (2nd) Autumn only to find that Hogswatch goods are available even earlier this year?

Between grad school and commission work, I'm working on a lil' series of animal-ified character sketches from Terry Pratchett's "Guards! Guards!"
I've already finished one for Carrot , and now we have Captain Samuel Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch! The design is based on a Český Fousek (or the 'Bohemian wire-haired pointing griffon').
Please note that I have not yet had the chance to read the books myself (though I intend to!) - I'm basing these depictions mostly off of how myself and the rest of my cast played the roles in our theatrical production, so there are likely inconsistencies when it comes to costumes and such :)

She smiled at him.
And then it arose and struck Vimes that, in her own special category, she was quite beautiful; this was the category of all the women, in his entire life, who has ever thought he was worth smiling at. She couldn't do worse, but then, he couldn't do better. So maybe it balanced out. She wasn't getting any younger but then, who was? And she had style and money and common-sense and self-assurance and all the things that he didn't, and she had opened her heart, and if you let her she could engulf you; the woman was a city.
And eventually, under siege, you did what Ankh-Morpork had always done - unbar the gates, let the conquerors in, and make them your own.
Terry Pratchett / Guards! Guards!
