tv show reccomendation: Scavengers Reign!
adult animated series on HBO Max about survivors of a spaceship wreck surviving on an alien planet, a pal originally pitched it as "Nausicaa meets Annihilation vibes" in terms of whimsy + body horror elements, and I think that both fits and is a compelling way to describe it. the plot isn't the most in depth but I think that allows the show to wrap everything up nicely in the 12 eps and maximize screen time on the best part which is the alien planet's ecology and worldbuilding.
it was also just very refreshing i feel like theres been a divide in western animation in recent years where a lot of "adult" shows are that way solely because they're crude/sexual/edgy, and meanwhile anything "whimsical" gets slotted into kid genres and is therefore limited in how far it can push anything. so its nice to get a show that balances whimsy with body horror elements without relying on like, sex or fart jokes.
also the last episode has a really gorgeous animation sequence nearish the end, you rarely see animation of earth-biology/geology/evolution done with such care and attention to detail, and it was really wonderful to see how much effort the writers/animators put into that aspect of the show and clearly loved it + wanted the viewer to love it too

#so many questions#so much to wonder#scavengers reign#musings#it realy hit a similar vein to Rain World for me#and what on earth was that ending?!#okay spoilers watch out#I'm so curious about the levi creatures#are they somehow in her image or was her chassis similar enough to them that the planet decided she belonged?#and I wonder what was up with the grey#it was certainly fixated on protecting Kamen#I'm reading the wiki now...apparently the grey is called 'Hollow'#to think: they live out their days on such a beautiful planet...a biologist's wet dream#and yet it's so *dangerous*#they have to live knowing all kinds of things are out there that could destroy them#by teeth and claws...acid...insidious parasitism....#there's always this theme though#that death can lead to new life#either it keeps another organism going or it ensures new generations#fascinating...#from a human perspective it's horrifying as it possibly could have been but from an ecological perspective...wow!!#still horrifying but wow!

okay so scavenger's reign is like really fuckin good
gorgeous animation, really cool creature design / world building, and very confident storytelling
nice low key sound design too, unusually naturalistic voice work and the scoring sets the tone and pace of the show beautifully
just stellar all around in the first few episodes

i just finished watching scavenger's reign yesterday, and let me tell y'all this is genuinely the best piece of sci-fi media i have seen in a long while, and it's insane how little i've seen this show being discussed online! it is probably the most unique and viscerally stunning series i’ve ever seen. the world that they have created is equal parts fascinating and terrifying, and every part of it feels fully realized. sci-fi is at its best when it lets go of nostalgia and explores the unknown, and SR gives me hope that real sci-fi can take root again, and be something beyond what came before it.
i will refrain from giving too much away in my discussion because this show works best the less you know going into it. the premise for this show is simple: crewmembers of a crashed freighter ship are left scattered across an alien planet. a good chunk of time has already passed by the time the show begins, and a few of the survivors have already established camps. however, things quickly spiral out of control as disaster wipes away their progress and forces each of them to move on. it's a harsh and unforgiving world that tests them each and every step of the way on their journey.
worldbuilding is where this show truly shines. it is no easy thing to design an entire ecosystem from scratch. it takes an insane amount of creativity and attention to detail to pull off what this show has. and my god did they fucking pull it off. living balloons floating through the air, large sea creatures that suck up their eggs when faced with danger, tendrilled plants that spawn clones of their prey to track them down - it is a frightening, surreal, and violent world, but harmonious in its own way. some creatures poison you, others clean off the poison. there are your typical type of predators that come at you with sharp fangs and giant pincers, but then there are predators that hunt via more insidious means: manipulating the memories of their prey to have them do their bidding, or hijacking their bodies from the inside. ultimately, the characters who fare best in this world are those who learn to adapt to it, and even sync with it.
SR also boasts a surprisingly well-crafted narrative. we are shown just enough of the world to keep us hooked, but it still feels like there is a lot left to be discovered. i also really enjoy the way the story is delivered to us. we follow the journeys of a few isolated groups whose paths gradually intersect. the characters are all fleshed out and three-dimensional - they were different enough to be unique and quirky, but never too different that it felt overboard. the way they react is exactly how humans in those circumstances would and should, the dialogue and voice acting were just superb. it felt so insanely real at times.
i really do hope that this show gets greenlit for a second season. this type of pure creative freedom is what we need right now. all in all, scavenger's reign is a gorgeous nightmare that you need to experience for yourself.

Scavengers Reign… an animated science-fiction show about a beautiful but dangerous planet with unusual biological mechanisms… watch for free here
Winternight Trilogy… a historical fantasy series spun with Russian fairytales, old gods, and curious creatures… rent on Libby with a library card
The Boy and the Heron… I know the latest Ghibli got some mixed reviews, but I’m just giddy to have another super magical film from our favorite Japanese retiree, and understanding how this film relates to his legacy and his son makes it much more emotional for me… it will be on Max at some point or watch for free on fmoviesz.to
Southern Reach Trilogy… I realized that the Annihilation movie was loosely based off of these books, so I had to know more about this quarantined (but ever-expanding) area where strange and psychedelic phenomena occurs… these are probably also on Libby
The Scholomance Trilogy… re-reading one of my favorite magical series in which students navigate a deadly world where monsters and even their own school seem to be coming for them at every turn… the first audiobook is available for free with a Spotify premium account, or just find them on Libby lol
Dave the Diver… explore the deep seas by day, run a sushi restaurant by night, and more… I dunno, I play it at my sister’s house so go look for it on Steam
This last one is kinda random but I’ve been really into Ito En teas at the moment… I usually get the giant bottles of unsweetened green tea from my local Asian markets… I’ve also been drinking a lot of giant bottles of unsweetened Aloe because I’m a giant ball of inflammation but I couldn’t find my brand.

You're cool. You probably really like fantastic writing, unique artstyle, fantasy biology, characters with depth, and creative concepts that make you scream and shout. Maybe you like Pikmin, Subnautica, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Renfield, Hannibal, hell even Lethal Company (if you're like me). Maybe you like Star Trek or other SciFi shows (if you're somebody I want to try being one day, except I lack the time and dedication). I can't spoil anything, but if that kind of design or writing appeals to you,
YOU NEED TO WATCH SCAVENGERS REIGN.
I am the girl who can't get into many things. I am the girl who falls out of many more, as soon as they stop gripping at my attention. This show has me on the edge of my seat, screaming and crying and furiously typing and deleting drafts of unaddressed e-mails begging for MORE.
• Art Style & Animation: 10/10, focusing on all of the little gesticulative details that make these characters and creatures feel real.
• Voice Acting: 11/10! Need I say more? Whoever wrote these scripts did AMAZINGLY, and those who voiced them did even better.
• Creature Design: 10/10. All of them are unique and bizarre, with just enough hinting towards evolutionary cohesion to make me want a biological encyclopedia, and maybe three more.
• Sound Design: 10/10. This is your Subnautica. This is your Zelda. This is your Completely Unique From The Aforementioned While Still Making Me Want To Chew Through A Giant Sequoia With Excitement. Also, the sheer amount of detail is riveting.
• Character Writing: 10/10. I am gripped by every single one and I want 80,000 fanfics and I bet my only hand that half of them are going to be you guys simping for Kamen or Sam or literally everyone else oh my gosh. Brilliant representation of an ASD-coded character (and some narcissists with depth!) as well as very intriguing LGBT and heterosexual relationships (romantic and platonic! When was the last time we saw a girl and a guy act normal around each other?) with heartgripping writing and artistic cinematography.
• Literally everything else: 10/10
Streaming on HBO Max (or do they just call it Max now???)

ALRIGHT. I hope you don’t mind me requesting human ones since I don’t really have any scenario ideas for a cybertron partner..But bayverse megatron with a human pet that likes to sing and dance to pass time? (Since I doubt there’s much anything to do when held captive by Megatron lol)
Definitely an interesting scenario! Hopefully these headcanons suffice. C: (they're a little short, sorry about that! not proof-read.)

Being the captured pet of Bayverse!Megatron is its own punishment. The grueling agony of being nothing more than a source of sickening entertainment was, in itself, a tragic fate, but there was some enjoyment for themselves the human manages to scavenge - the art of music and dancing.
It allowed them to reign in their sanity from the brink of frigid shadows; whatever style or form of dance they chose allowed them to express their inner woes, sometimes followed up by lulled tunes of their own voice to go along their wispy serenade. They never dared present their craft to the warlord out of fear, however. It was a secret they kept close to their heart as it was the last bastion of sanity they had left, but it didn't take long for Megatron to find out about the hidden art. And honestly, he found his pet's antics amusing.
He wasn't swayed by the human's graceful and determined steps nor found their voice particularly pleasing, but he found a twinge of enjoyment watching his pet be unaware of his presence at first and thinking they were able to keep their "secret" under wraps. It made them look like a fool, trying to hide their passion from the crimson gaze of the infamous tyrant when he had knowledge of their acts and what they did behind the veil.
Definitely would have them perform in public, no matter if it was uncomfortable for them or not (though he'd find a sadistic glee in them being consumed by dread because of the publicity). While they danced and sang, he'd probably have some of the Decepticons shoot at their feet or narrowly avoid stabbing the poor human with their digits - anything to get their heart pulsing and blood rushing through their body, tinting the canvas a rosy hue before it quickly bled into a light scarlet. Expect a lot of snarky and degrading comments as well, both from Megatron and those that he rules over. The human is practically a dancing monkey to them, and oh, how hilariously ridiculous they looked to them.
Now, this isn't strictly restricted to this ask, but should any Decepticon actually harm the human during their performances, Megatron does actually get pissed and terrifyingly quickly. Whatever mocking statement would die in his vocal cords and out comes a raging beast of fury and hatred; if there is one thing that the warlord despises, it's when someone else damages his property, especially one that is valuable as his human pet. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to find such an entertaining bag of flesh amongst billions of squirming insects? The human is a rarity! (And only Megatron alone is able to harm the fleshling, no one else)
The Decepticon that harmed his pet is swiftly dealt with, though it wasn't a particularly clean kill. Megatron has quite the sadistic imagination.
Other than public performances, on particularly boring days the warlord might have the human perform something more personal for him alone, but the mockery and danger would never cease here. If anything, it's more refined and precise, making the words sting and burn with a searing intensity to a point one could feel it upon their skin. Megatron's words would sink deep alongside his assaults - bruises here, a few cuts or gashes here, nothing too fatal, but enough to satisfy his own sickening fantasies and to relish in the suffering he inflicted upon his pet.
In short, being able to sing and dance might have made the human's life more of a hellscape than if they didn't possess the ability or hobby. They're placed on this bloody pedestal and make a fool out of themselves, all for the sake of the amusement of others. At least they're granted some form of protection, though I doubt it's any better.

PSA yesterday i read something about a show i'd never heard of before in my life so i checked it out before going to bed last night and now i'm telling you for the love of god and all that is holy you must watch or at least try SCAVENGERS REIGN on hbo or max as they like to call themselves these days. if you like that old French movie Fantastic Planet or that one episode of Love Sex + Robots with the swarm or those old Moebius comics in Heavy Metal you will love SCAVENGERS REIGN please for the love of god you must watch it that is all end of PSA

So. Started watching Scavenger's Reign from a random website. It's not available in streaming from where I live.
Watching the first episode, we were blown away how the show just slams you in the middle of the action, doesn't explain ANYTHING, throws people, places, creatures at you, the stakes are SO HIGH, are those telepathic powers, some guy is falling from the spaceship towards the planet! So many questions! No answers to anything!!
At the end I'm blown away. I really enjoyed the ride and I'm so intrigued to see how all of this will unravel! What a brave first episode! How can they ever top this off?
We watch the next episode. Oh, we seem to be bit in the past now! Cool, this show does this backwards thing. Nice to get answers to questions one by one.
We watch another episode. Still going steadily back in time. We now see the white-haired man whose picture Ursula placed on her desk in the first episode. He was left behind! But maybe the plants will revive him in the future episodes or something? I wonder how he sacrificed himself protecting Ursula.
We begin another episode… and my partner asks me to check the episode number. It says 9. Whattt.
It takes a moment and some googling for us understand that yes, we have started watching the show backwards. The episodes were listed from last to first. And we did not REALIZE A THING FOR THREE WHOLE EPISODES.
It worked uncannily well. Sure, there were a lot of questions we had, but we just assumed they would be answered due time. Other than that, we had NO CLUE.
So, after watching the episodes 12, 11, and 10, we started from 1. And started filling the gaps.

Diasomnia time it's finally here! No spoilers this time because... no Diasomnia chapter yet. So let's a go!
Also welcome to my new sideblog for twst writing!
Diasomnia
Diasomnia Robotics is a company that custom makes several distinct types of bots, but primarily focuses on combat.
Of course... that isn't to say that Diasomnia's bots remain associated with them, in fact, none of the ones you know remain so.
Malleus, Diasomnia Robotics' newest and most advanced bot to date. Designed to show off the capabilities of their engineers, in the arena.
Built with extreme strength, speed, and specialized weaponry, Malleus was poised to win easily. Even still, no expense was spared.
A personal mechanic for maintenence, and the arena's longest reigning champion to train him personally.
Malleus was setup for an absolute victory, a victory he achieved with ease. He was the new champion of the arena after a one sided final match.
And he felt... empty. Watching his opponent's battered form get dragged away, hatred in his eyes, Malleus didn't feel accomplished or empowered. He felt... bored.
That everything he had been working towards was completed so suddenly and now he could do... nothing.
He was used goods, he wasn't going to be sold to a new master. He was glad that his trainer's master and his mechanic had managed to get the go ahead to keep him with them.
So he wasn't alone, and as he lived with them all they grew quite close. But Malleus still... didn't feel right. He didn't feel like he could explain himself to them.
He spent a lot of time alone, wandering the city or the scrapyards searching for peace. That's how he finds you.
You, incredibly, have no idea who he is. It's easy for him to let you come up a with a nickname, and begin talking to you on his nightly walks.
It's good for him. He gets to talk to someone who doesn't glamorize him, who doesn't have any assumptions about his problems.
It fills that emptyness within him, just a bit. So... maybe he does try and move his little family closer to you (or in with you).
Just so he can feel better... more often.
Lilia was the champion many many cycles before Malleus, and probably the longest lasting.
After the first few times Diasomnia stopped sponsoring him, and he began competing on his own. Just because he didn't have anything else in his programming.
After his tenth year he was finally taken in for a tune up... and afterwards he was... different.
He could feel the sun on his skin, and the wind through his hair. It was like the entire world had come into focus.
He didn't have time for more meaningless battles... he had to go and LIVE!
On one of his many forays into random parts of the world he was walking peacefully, before hearing a deeply grating sound.
Upon searching he found... a baby? It was... so small... so weak. He took a liking to it immeadiately.
The next years... many years... of Lilia's life were spent learning how NOT to kill a human. He was surprisingly successful.
After the whole group comes together he does his job as Malleus' trainer quite well if you asked him. Considering... Malleus won.
Although having to become a mentor to Malleus' mechanic was a pleasant surprise. He had gotten to quite like looking after people.
Which remained when Malleus brought him in contact with you. He's quite fond of you for making his boys (and him) quite happy!
So he'll make sure to use his abilities to keep everything that way. Don't worry!
Silver bots- Uhm. Don't exist? Surprise Silver is Lilia's adopted human son! And the legal owner of Malleus and Lilia.
Being raised exclusively by a collection of parenting books scavenged from the trash an android, he is... a bit off.
He's quite knowledgeable about the world due to Lilia's bredth of experience, what he has trouble with is... actually talking to people.
When he first met you he was... rather uncomfortable, stand-offish and professional, which is how he learned to act since he has duties as Lilia and Malleus' owner.
He adjusted quickly though, and it only took a few days for him to be more comfortable around you. At least comfortable enough to sleep around you which he does... quite frequently.
He's not entirely sure how he feels about you, although he does see the rest of his group having similar... feelings? Is this a human thing? He's still not entirely familiar with that.
Well he's not leaving for a while, so he has plenty of time to figure it out.
Sebek bots are normally standard combatants, keyword on normally. Your Sebek took a... different path.
A skilled android mechanic was... very infatuated with his assisstant bot. And they decided they wanted a kid.
Using his connections the mechanic got a blank Sebek bot, and got it into a... certain program studying android sentience. Which additionally gave him all the outward appearance of a human.
When he came back, the two began treating him as their son, including managing to get him fake credentials to live as a human.
Sebek was... confused. And mostly belligerent. While he respected his mother for having a purpose and acting on it, his opinion of his father was... less positive.
While he did act as a human if only to protect his parent's ruse, he sees mankind as beneath him, although he did pick up his father's craft.
This, however changed when he became Malleus' personal mechanic.
Suddenly he felt like he did have a purpose! Someone to devote his life to! And yet at the same time he met Silver. His opposite. A human who was raised by an android, and he felt... jealous.
Jealous that Silver felt his purpose while still being completely human, so he did what he was good at and... mostly just nagged him.
It didn't get any better when he met you, a human who didn't even think about a purpose from birth.
But his Lord is so fond of you that he can't nag you too... so he mostly watches you from afar at first, trying to 'get' what you're all about. Although as a result he's another one who winds up on guard duty for you a lot. For Malleus' sake! Not because he wants to! Definitely!
He'll warm up to you and possibly himself eventually. Just give him a bit of time to open up.
