i wanna talk about visions. specifically, kaeya's vision.
this will contain spoilers for the caribert archon quest, as well as spoilers for kaeya's backstory.
(VERY short summary at the bottom btw)
people get visions for different reasons, though it's all based on ambition. there are subcategories for each element, which makes each character of a specific element different.
anemo is for those who have lost someone close to them (like barbatos).
geo is given to people who are strong-willed or hardheaded (like morax).
electro is given to those who are different/cast out [like beelzebul (she was much different than baal)].
I think dendro is given to people who are dedicated to perfecting their skills? I'm not sure on this one but it seems right looking at dendro characters.
hydro is given to people with a strong belief system.
pyro is typically given to people with fiery passion.
and cryo is given to people who have faced conflict. mainly internal conflict (ex. self-hatred, self-deprecation, etc.). it is also given to people who have been isolated or cast out (like ayaka).
but I think that their visions work in different ways for those reasons, too. for example, yoimiya wanted a vision to light fireworks, and her vision gave her the ability to imbue her arrows with pyro energy (allowing her to light them safely from a distance). sucrose was experimenting with anemo energy when she got hers, and she can now freely throw around anemo energy whenever and wherever she wants (she probably uses it most in the lab). beidou got hers after fighting haishan (a deadly sea monster) and she can now parry powerful attacks with ease (something you'd want when fighting huge monsters).
but then there's kaeya. he definitely fits the internal conflict aspect of getting a cryo vision. he (very obviously) hates himself, and he was indeed cast out from his own family. he got his vision when fighting his own brother, and he was literally on the brink of death. if he hadn't gotten his vision in that moment, there would be no kaeya.
let's talk about what his vision does in particular, and why it does those things.
first off, it all seems very, very simple. his skill shoots out a burst of frost, and his burst makes a few icicles.
burst first: they are an obvious reference to the abyss. when cryo abyss mages are reforming their shields, there are icicles flying around them. this is a reference to kaeya's heritage as a descendant of chlotar alberich, the founder of the abyss order.
now, his elemental skill: it shoots out a burst of ice, almost like it's meant to stop an oncoming blast of fire...sound familiar? (*COUGH* DILUC'S BURST *COUGH*) but that's not all it does. his passive, cold-blooded strike, makes his skill heal kaeya. nobody else, just kaeya. hm...i wonder why he'd need to self-heal? (*COUGH* DILUC *COUGH* SELF-HATRED *COUGH*) but wait, there's more! kaeya's c4 (which I recently got) makes him SUMMON A SHIELD when his hp gets below a certain percent...and it only shields him. if you switch characters, the shield disappears until kaeya is back on the field. hm...why would kaeya need a shield when his health gets so low... it's almost like his vision was suited to the EXACT circumstances as when he got it. self-healing and self-shielding. his vision is catered to his fight with diluc.
now that begs the question: why did kaeya, a KHAENRI'AHN, get a vision? the gods hate khaenri'ahns, and celestia eradicated them. and here's the thing: im not sure who exactly gives out visions. it could be celestia, or it could be the archons themselves. so, it's either:
the cryo archon saw potential, or
celestia wants to use him to eradicate the abyss
it's pretty much common knowledge that kaeya's vision is different, and you can't say it's because he's khaenri'ahn. scaramouche was born in inazuma, but has a sumeru vision. this means that the vision case denotes the nation the vision was received in. that's why kaeya has a mond-style case. but why two wings instead of one?
i think it's a marker. so that when celestia decides to finally start yet another war, they know which mond citizen is their little pawn. they know which khaenri'ahn not to kill. they want to use him, to show them that their founder's descendant has learned to live (semi) happily in teyvat.
but hey it's just a theory and this was all done with like. zero research, just my general knowledge on kaeya and his backstory (i love kaeya so general knowledge is. a lot.). i repeat: it's all just theoretical. don't take this as fact I just love kae so so so much and think about him all the time <3
anyways to summarize, kaeya's vision acts the way it does because it's a self-defense mechanism from when diluc almost killed him. and I think it looks different because celestia wants to use him.
ok thanks goodnight

Do you ever wonder if Zhongli gets jealous that he didn't give Childe his Vision first?
Like, we don't really know what the criteria are for who gets what vision, but it's obvious that Hydro suits Childe: fluid and adaptable, just like him. Frankly, he's nothing like the stolid stone that is his lover's domain. In truth, it is only sensible that he hadn't caught the Geo Lord's attention sooner.
But still, it chafes at Zhongli to think of that bond they could have and how much closer they could be. If he had a Geo Vision instead, Childe could draw his power straight from him, like he's holding a part of Zhongli within himself. Well, another part of him, since he already holds Zhongli's heart.
And irrational it may be, but damned if he doesn't have to smother the jealously of that ancient dragon within him every time he sees Childe draw his power from another god

So after the Fontaine archon quest, I believe my theory for the hydro vision qualifications were VERY correct.
Hydro visions are given to people in positions of power who make huge sacrifices of their own to help their people.
Here’s a list of all hydro characters so far and their qualifications:
Furina/Focalors: Focalors split herself in two and decided to kill herself, and Furina put on the world’s most tragic performance for hundreds of years, all to save their people from the flood.
Ayato: Made himself into a clever, somewhat ruthless clan head in order to protect his sister and the rest of the clan
Kokomi: Led a revolution to free her people from Raiden’s tyranny, but also became the head priestess and leader of an entire island just because it needed to be done
Mona: Devotes herself to reading people’s figures despite those people often hating her when they hear it, and refuses to use her power to help herself even when she’s starving
Nilou: Has chosen to be effectively the face of the theatre despite constant harassment from the Academiya, and later risks getting arrested multiple times to protect it
Tartaglia: Genuinely believes in the Tsaritsa’s motivations, and is literally killing himself to achieve both her goals and the happiness of his family. Among more chances for fighting of course.
Yelan: Originally had a team for her espionage work, but after they died, she decided to do everything on her own so that no one else would be hurt
Barbara: A healer and an idol dedicated to helping people, even when her fans are being royal creeps and she’s not happy at all. Her own happiness means nothing against putting on a brave face
Candace: Given her position as Guardian at age 8, and has put her entire life towards the protection of Aaru Village. Anything and everything falls on he head, but she loves her people
Xingqiu: The second son of a very rich guild, but only uses his station to help people under the principles of chivalry. He doesn’t even accept the credit for his good deeds half the time. But he really isn’t supposed to be doing this, and his family doesn’t appreciate it
Neuvillette isn’t really included because he’s a fucking dragon, but he’s also made huge sacrifices through sentencing his closest friends and handing out completely lawful judgements in the face of complicated circumstances.

Seven Prayers for Seven Archons (a Genshin Impact fic)
Let me tell you about this fic! I published it in early 2022 and, despite the fact that it's quite outdated, I still think it's a pretty fun read. (It's definitely a weird read, at least!)
Tumblr media
Here's the pitch:
structural formalism as an evocative device (in hindsight, I'd cite Italo Calvino as a major influence);
style and syntax as character voice (there's a recipe section!, for some reason?);
a comparative character study of the entire Genshin cast circa v2.4.
Just kidding! That was not actually the pitch unless you're one of 3–5 very specific followers who I'm guessing might appreciate that.
Here's the actual pitch:
Genshin characters' Vision stories; every single one (v2.4). Some are simple remixes of canon, others fill in missing scenes.
Includes:
an Ayaka training montage (tragedy);
Yun Jin's greatest performance;
the Kokomi-Orobaxi conversation both of them deserved;
an informal meeting with the Yuheng;
if you've read Barbara's Vision story then you know what you're in for;
Alatus meets Haagentus and Morax;
...and, one of my personal favourites:
“Once upon a time, there was a Hoarfrost Heiress, destined to be a Darkrime Duchess.”

My thoughts on Visions
Every time I hear a new theory about Visions, the first thing I do is apply it to the archons in question. So here’s my take on the vision theory
Anemo: Desire freedom and the ability to overcome loss in their lives. Their ambition in life usually related to breaking free of chains of some kind whether it be literal or metaphorical.
For example: Xiao was freed from the chains of his old master and now works hard to protect Liyue and grant freedom to the people.
Venti helped Mondstat overcome their chains and strives to let them continue their free lifestyles. He overcame the loss of his friend despite still mourning after all these centuries.
Hydro: Those who have high expectations on them from uncontrollable circumstances or those who have dedicated themselves to a craft
For example: Barbra has high expectations from her family name to the point she has seemingly abandoned it and she has dedicated herself to healing and the church
Furina has expectations she tries to live up to as the hydro archon and her craft of choice appears to be acting. Even Focalor had high expectations being Egeria's successor
Dendro: Those who strive to learn and grow beyond socially expectations and to do so through unconventional means.
For Example: Tighnari grew beyond what he would have if he had become a sage
Nahida had societal expectations from the sages and is now growing into new expectations she’s set for herself as an archon.
Pyro: Those who strive to be the best of something or those who have a family legacy to live up to or preserve.
For Example: Amber, strives to be a great outrider despite being the only one and is trying to ensure her grandfathers legacy lives on with her.
As we have not met the Pyro archon, I’m not sure how much of this applies so this one may change
Cyro: Overcoming isolation and a conflict of beliefs. Their ambition in life relates to their desire to find a home or relates to their conflicting belief in a unique way.
For example: Diona is a bartenter who hates alcohol and has a blessing to create amazing drinks. Her ambition is to take down the Mondstat wine industry.
The Tsaritsa, from what we can tell, isolated herself after the destruction of Khanriah and seems to have a belief she needs to take down Celestia despite being a creation of Celestia
Geo: Those who shoulder a metaphorical or literal weight to help those around them and often they take promises or ‘contracts’ seriously.
For example: Noelle seems to take on a lot of the heavy lifting literally for the knights, she carries crates and takes down larger, harder to defeat enemies.
Zhongli ruled and cared for Liyue for Millennia, seemingly putting their safety and lives before his own needs. His retirement is him ending his contract.
Electro: Those who don’t ‘belong’ in the traditional sense, the ones who are outcasted for who they are or the ones who don’t truly fall in line with society
For Example: Fischl is caught in her daydream, her ‘reality’ is different to everyone else's. Even her own parents didn’t accept her
Ei and Makoto were the only twin archons, they shared the title but not the same duties. They were immediate stand outs with the archons and yet they hid that individuality from the rest of the world
this is all just my thoughts I've gather from too much free time and ADHD nonsense
Edit: 9/12/2023 because I forgot Electro-

Lowkey just realized this, but Simon is perfect for literally every vision from Genshin
Like, think about it:
Anemo vision is given to those who, in some way, desire or chase some form of freedom
Starting off strong, Simon fits that description really well for a number of reasons. He wants to feel free from the guilt and pain of losing Betty and the world he lived in so many centuries ago. He wishes to escape from the labyrinth that is his mind (more Ice King but yk). He desires freedom from his past as Ice King and the mistakes and atrocities he did. And lastly, he wishes to find the true freedom that is death (implied)
Geo vision is given to those who work hard to achieve their ambitions
You cannot tell me that does not describe Simon. He worked hard to be where he was in life (pre-Betty), going on expeditions, researching and not stopping even if literally nobody believes or respects him. And even now, he is working hard to be a better person (going to therapy and expanding his social circle)
Electro vision is given to those who see the world differently from others and are genetically considered different or odd
Now let's be honest with ourselves, that's, like, Simon 101. Even before the Mushroom war Simon was considered weird. Nobody was interested in his lectures or saw his research as valuable (except Betty). It's even more true now that he feels isolated and different from everyone around him due to his circumstances. He's supposed to be dead, yet he's still here, surrounded by people so similar yet different from him in a world that feels like as if someone looked at earth through a funky mirror
Dendro vision is given to those who either seek or posses knowledge or skills that are considered either hidden or forbidden or simply value knowledge highly
Again, it describes the poor sad little man perfectly. As a researcher he valued knowledge very highly as he always studied or researched whenever we see his "past" life. Now he also possesses 'forbidden' knowledge, that of the crown and Golb
Hydro vision is given to those who either have a strong dedication towards something, or have a desire to help or protect others
Marceline, Fiona and Cake. Need I say more?
He wishes to protect people he deeply cares for, especially if he sees them as child-figures. He sacrificed his sanity because it was the only way to protect Marceline during the apocalypse and left before things went bad and he was willing to do the same for Fiona and Cake to protect them even if it mean going through the heartache all over again
Pyro vision is given to those who are strongly passionate about something and dedicated their life to it
You could make the case for both his research and love for artifacts and Betty but I think that Betty is the better option for this. At the start of the series, we see that he has dedicated a lot of his time to Betty even she isn't with him anymore. He still wants to see her again, to save her. She was his everything and he loves her more than anything, unable to move on until the finale and even then he still has trouble with it
Cryo vision is given to those who are at a "crossroad" in their life, are torn between responsibilities and desires or hiding something
The irony of the cryo fitting him aside, the vision is literally him in the series. He's torn between wanting to hang on on that thread of sanity that Betty literally sacrificed her life for and helping Fiona and Cake and having a purpose in life once again. He wants to help but by helping he's basically spitting in Betty's face and showing that her final sacrifice means nothing. How can he decide? When he feels like every day is not only meaningless but also taxing and a waste of Betty's gift. He doesn't deserve it but at least he can help someone, fix their world and do something good with his life. After all, no one really needs him, right?
(This is a very random post and it's a habit I developed of thinking "what vision fits the character I'm hyperfixating on the most?" and, honestly, I recommended it to everyone cause it makes you look deeper and understand them better as a character)
(Don't take this too seriously tho, it's just crazy ramblings that plague my mind at night)

My "professional" writeup of this concept is delayed because it takes more brain power to explain things in depth than I have at my disposal right now, but in the interest of giving people something to read, just for now:
Here's my personal, not-canon take on
The Jungian Symbolism of Elemental Visions
ANEMO: Overidentification with a loss → Catalyst for acceptance
GEO: Overidentification with alienation/isolation → Catalyst for compassion/unity within a group
ELECTRO: Overidentification with an ideal/fantasy → Catalyst for driven action
DENDRO: Overidentification with self/personal experience → Catalyst for knowledge-gathering
HYDRO: Overidentification with a legacy/an external locus of control → Catalyst for rebellion
PYRO: Overidentification with parents/father figures → Catalyst for enterprise
CRYO: Overidentification with the Jungian "persona" → Catalyst for self-determination

Dendro Vision Theory
Okay so I saw someone who originally made a post a while ago (I can’t find the post or their blog so they might have deleted?) about how Dendro visions seem to be linked to someone’s ambition being related to stepping into a role that needed to be filled regardless of their limitations which they originally posted when Tighnari and Collei was released
I wanted to expand upon it with my own speculation especially now that we have even more Dendro characters at our disposal!
In context for Tighnari and Collei, it was Tighnari stepping up into a necessary role to correct misinformation despite the hesitance he initially felt about stepping out against a researcher but once he did it fulfilled a needed role that ended up kickstarting civil and engaging academic discussions between all of the scholars in the lecture hall etc.
And then Collei stepping into the role of a Forest Watcher, taking action to save a missing girl because she knew Tighnari wouldn’t be back in time and if weather conditions in the forest got worse the little girl could die despite her own physical limitations
With that stepping into a necessary role, potentially connecting to Nahida in the way that she was not allowed to step up into her proper role as an archon due to the view of her wisdom vs her allogenes getting their visions by stepping into a necessary role via trusting in their own wisdom and ambitions
Now that was the conclusion they originally came to when just Collei and Tighnari were out so I wanted to talk about that theory by seeing how it holds up now that we have more vision stories to read!!
Okay so, Alhaitham’s is e x t r e m e l y vague and is a bit hard to deduce but I think the beginning in which we are shown a portion of a book Alhaitham had been reading relates to one of the Akademiya’s six cardinal sins: “Investigating the origin of words.”
While some of these cardinal seems seem understandable such as the tampering of life and death being a sin, to think Etymology of all things would be a sin on the same level as interfering with the natural cycle of life and mortality, in a place flourishing with scholars of all kinds, is kind of odd when you think about it. The languages are very important as emphasized by the book he read in his vision story and the origin of language arguably is especially so given what it can tell people about the evolution of a place’s history and culture.
So if we were to focus on that aspect, on Alhaitham’s pursuit of that knowledge in regards to language, I think it can be argued he is, in his own way, stepping into a necessary role. Now, unlike with Collei and maybe Tighnari, he’s not actively doing it for anyone’s benefit which is completely fine. He is doing it in pursuit of what knowledge intrigues and interests him, and I think this is where we see the “trusting in his wisdom” aspect come into play as he goes after this knowledge and information despite the Akademiya’s rules regarding cardinal sins. It’s less a split second decision and going with his gut, and more the other traits that characterize wisdom according to the dictionary.
Wisdom is defined generally defined by three main factors whether all together or separately: Good Judgement , Experience, and Knowledge. These factors can all work together in different duos or a trio and they can work on their own and I think some of these aspects do such in Alhaitham’s vs Tighnari’s vs Collei’s. Collei’s characterized by good judgement, an understanding or insight not necessarily based on exact experience or knowledge but good sense. Tighnari’s coming from a place of experience in terms of the misinformation with his specialized field at the very least if not including the other factors too. And lastly Alhaitham’s, which again makes it hard to perfectly pinpoint given its vagueness, but his knowledge of how to pursuit this subject and confidence in such seems to allow him to do as much with ease. Very likely good sense and understanding of what he has to do to pursue it playing into this.
I want to go back to the whole “necessary role” thing. While it isn’t as obvious as Tighnari’s or especially Collei’s, I think Alhaitham’s decision to go after this information regardless of the Akademiya’s rules not for other’s sake still puts him into a similar role. The world of Teyvat needs to be questioned, despite the consequences for those who do it, in order to break away from its cycles of histories that just keep repeating. It needs people who don’t explicitly listen to the rules, who pursue certain knowledge out of genuine desire for that subject. While certain cardinal sins like the tampering of evolution or life and death stands to make sense, the questioning of Teyvat’s history even through the origin of languages, whether modern or ancient, is something necessary.
I know it probably sounds confusing and again, This!! Is my speculation and the conclusion I’ve come to because honestly, a lot of Alhaitham’s vision story really is super vague so it can be so hard to read between the lines and discern what we’re meant to grasp from it. So if you disagree with my interpretation, I 100% understand 😭 I didn’t explain it the best like I wish I could have and we’re working with some pretty open to interpretation stuff here.
I’m very much
Struggling to try and grasp what Yao Yao could have done to gain her vision honestly as her vision story makes it really hard to understand what she did to get it. Something that is evident from it is that it likely wasn’t after some big huge event, wasn’t something that happened as a result of something overtly obvious to her. Something to note though is Yao Yao’s personality and her basic story in general as a disciple of Madame Ping.
Yao Yao is characterized by the fact that she is very generous and sincere and is used to taking care of those around her. Even jokingly referred to as like a “little adult” in things promoting her release and in game due to her sense of responsibility and desire to help others as the disciple of Madame Ping. In fact, such a thing is specifically mentioned in her vision story.
“As a disciple of her master, she would follow her example and protect the people.” Due to this and the theory of why certain people receive dendro visions, it leads me to believe that Yao Yao got her vision from one of the many, many instances of helping people in need. It was a necessary role she had to step into, she stepped into that role with trust in the wisdom she had gained from her master, Madame Ping, and given that it’s something she’s already so accustomed to, it would make sense why she didn’t initially notice or at the very least, can’t explicitly attribute gaining a vision to one event. Because it’s something she often does, a duty that she has accepted as a disciple of the adepti.
Or at least, that is my interpretation based upon what I have seen in game from her character and her character stories!
I wanna once again say, that I am building off of someone else’s theory originally with my own speculation even though I can’t find the original post now, but yeah! I hope this made even the slightest bit of sense because it feels like one huge tangent and I’m so sorry 😭

Okay so hear me out
We know that people with Visions are always the ones with really cool outfits and the rest of the world mostly just wears boring, normal clothes. Easily brushed off as background character disease because we really only care about our vision wielding friends
But! But. When Childe unleashes his delusion in the Golden House fight, his outfit changes. Not like a lot, but enough. I propose that receiving a Vision instantly grants you a magical girl transformation to give you some really cool new clothes. Everyone is just dressed super normally right up until they draw the favor of the gods and then boom, sudden fashion icon. Drawing from a different power (like a delusion)? Boom, different outfit. Electro archon going a bit nuts and steal your vision? Boom, right back to being a boring, normally dressed person (and, you know, other complications)
Clearly the Traveler comes from a world where their fashion sense is not tied to the will of the gods (though I guess the changing colors with the elements thing sort of implies some level of influence on his style)
As for Dainsleif... Idk, I guess after 5 centuries wander Teyvat you kind of pick up a few things about how to look good

Is the placement of the Vision important? Does it effect the body part it’s near? Does Kaeya’s thigh feel cold? Does Albedo’s neck feel heavy…?? Does Diluc’s thigh feel hot? Is it uncomfortable? If a genuine Vision flares up by instinct, does the body part get injured? What are the pain tolerance of Vision holders? Is it comfortable at a certain degree? In some cases, could it possibly be a metaphor for chronic pain or other physical symptoms? (oh that last one is interesting)

elemental vision theory
Anemo: loss/avoidance All the anemo vision holders are dealing with some sort of avoidance and denial of their feelings. They want to escape from something–most of them received their visions when being forced to deal with a situation that they really wanted to escape from. For example, Kazuha had to endure a horrible storm with very little cover, Sayu was escaping from attackers, Scara was facing his past self after trying to forget his past, etc.
Geo: commitment/tradition Geo vision holders know their path in life and are 100% committed to following it. They are extremely dedicated to their craft and consider it to be a vital aspect to who they are. For example, Itto is committed to his gang and pours 100% of himself into holding it together, Navia has dedicated her life to the Spina di Rosula, Noelle has been training to be a knight for 2457893 years, etc.
Electro: solitude/unshakeable ideals Electro vision holders have big ambitions and work diligently towards achieving them regardless of whether others approve or support them. They immerse themselves in the pursuit of these ambitions in solitude, not relying on anyone else for support and always staying true to themselves. For example, Fischl is committed to playing her role and not giving up on her fantasy despite people telling her she's childish, Kujou Sara is dedicated to serving the Raiden Shogun and will never falter in her loyalty, etc.
Dendro: compassion/dedication to learning Dendro vision holders tend to be intellectuals who dedicate themselves to certain areas of study. However, they never lose their strong sense of compassion and humanity and are kind above all else. For example, Collei is dedicated to learning how to be a forest ranger so she can help others, Al Haitham is a dedicated scholar but cares deeply about his friends (even though he might not always show it outwardly), Yaoyao is a compassionate healer who constantly wants to take care of everyone.
Hydro: duality/facade Hydro vision wielders are the definition of "there's more than meets the eye." Every single one of them has an unexpected side to them that you wouldn't really expect. Often, they assume an outward personality that is more socially accepted or more impressive than their inner personality. For example, Barbara is a committed church deaconess but is also a pop idol, Xingqiu is a bookish nerd and an incredible swordsman, Kokomi is a fearless battle healer and also a bookworm, Yelan assumes a different identity with everyone she meets, Ayato is a suave politician but also a weirdo who likes drinking weird plant smoothies.
Pyro: contentment/passion Pyro vision wielders have dealt with adversity to get to where they are, but they're happy with what they do. They've accepted their current circumstances and are passionate about what they do. For example, Bennett loves being an adventurer despite his shit luck and constant setbacks, Xinyan loves her music despite getting ostracized for it, Diluc is content to run the Dawn Winery and protect Mondstadt as the Darknight hero despite it not being what he initially wanted to do, etc.
Cryo: isolation/family trauma Cryo vision wielders tend to feel like outsiders in society and have trouble socializing/being a part of groups. For example, Shenhe isn't viewed as human by other humans, Kaeya is Khaenriahn and feels like he'll never truly be a part of Mondstadt or Diluc's family, Layla is shy and sleep-deprived and has a hard time socializing as a result, Chongyun feels like a black sheep in his own family, etc.
