Digimon Partners for the TWST Cast | Pt. Savanaclaw

( Summary: Basically how they met and more. )

(Warning: This is a LONG post.)

Heartslabyul, Savanaclaw, Octavinelle, Scarabia, Pomefiore, Ignihyde, Diasomnia

(A/N: Sorry if any of these characters seem out of character.)

(Löwemon)

Pronouns: He/Him

They met a few days after Chapter 2

What happened was that Baal!Yuu and Grim were helping the Savanaclaw students clean up the Magift arena from Leona’s overblot

Suddenly a Duskmon appeared and suddenly attacked in blind fury

In the end, it took the combined efforts of Baal!Yuu and the Savnaclaw trio in order to subdue Duskmon

When he was defeated, Duskmon reverted back to Lowemon and was taken into the dorm to help recover

When he came to and heard what happened, he immediately apologized for his actions and explained what happened

Before he came to Twisted Wonderland, Löwemon got into an argument with his brother about whether it was okay for digimon to keep going to the real world as more reports of digimon troubling humans and disappearances kept piling up

Löwemon got so furious at his brother, Lobomon, that he left to calm down in the human world

But something went wrong and he found himself in a dark decrepit world he could barely see through

After which he was infected by a virus that played on his inner rage and jealousy, warping him into Duskmon and unleashing him on Twisted Wonderland

Baal!Yuu theorized this could've been residue of Leona's blot, but they have no further evidence

Löwemon, for a time, decided to stay at Ramshackle before moving to Savanaclaw

Why? He wanted to mostly help Ruggie as he felt bad for him doing most of the work

It was also to get Leona to stop wasting his potential, reminding Löwemon a bit of how he was in the past and still is presently

All in all, Leona's personality did clash with the more diligent and responsible Löwemon, but they ended up forming an odd partnership based on shared experiences

Plus, they do have some qualities shared between them (They’re both terrible at looking after kids)

(Fangmon)

Pronouns: They/Them

Ruggie met Fangmon two weeks before the event of Chapter 2

At first, Ruggie thought that it was just some stray cat, and took pity by leaving some of his lunch

But he quickly caught on that something, or someone, was tricking him

So he set some bait in the botanical garden and when he saw Fangmon he used “Laugh With Me” to trap them in their place

Ruggie was kinda impressed, if not a little ticked, that they managed to trick him for this long

Fangmon had been stuck in Twisted Wonderland for a week and wanted more food than just scraps, but couldn’t due to the number of students watching

When Ruggie gave them some of his lunch the first time, that wasn’t Fangmon tricking them, they thought they could just kept up the act until they got home

Ruggie didn’t know exactly what to do here, on one hand the wolf digimon was tricking him for nearly a week, but on the other hand he kinda relates to the digimon

So, Ruggie made a deal with Fangmon that if they helped Ruggie with anything he needs then he can split his food with him 50/50

After which, Fangmon followed around Ruggie whenever he needed help or just because they could

They’re pretty independent, often only coming to Ruggie for food or to help him out with anything he needs

Fangmon also likes bringing any spare change they “found” to Ruggie, never telling where they got from though

Ruggie is a little suspicious on where his digimon “finds” the money, but they’re good company and a greater partner in crime

Evolution Line

Gazimon > Fangmon > Weregarurumon (Black) > Metal Garurumon (Black)

(Strabimon)

Pronouns: He/Him

Jack met Strabimon a few days after Löwemon moved into the dorm (Also during Riddle’s Labwear vignette)

Jack was staying late for track and field and just as he was going back to the dorm he smelled something off

Following the scent, Jack found an badly injured Strabimon

Thinking on instinct, Jack took the digimon and rushed to the infirmary to try and help him

When Strabimon came to he was weary of Jack, but he let his guard down after he saw other digimon in the infirmary

Strabimon felt a bit comfortable around Jack, but preferred being around other digimon so he stayed in Ramshackle for the first few days

Strabimon had lived a mostly secluded life and never interacted with humans before, therefore was nervous around them

Before he arrived in Twisted Wonderland, he got into a fight with some territorial digimon and passed out in a cave

The two wolves got along slower than the other first years with their digimon, but they eventually were able to bound and form a partnership

Strabimon tends to stay close to those he trusts, mostly Jack or other digimon, but will wander off on his own if it’s to help someone he cares for

He also likes cacti, like Jack, but it comes from more of a sense of curiosity as he never seen plants like them before

He often helps Jack with his cacti if he gets too busy

Evolution Line

Strabimon > Garumon > Beowolfmon > Magna Garurumon

Alright, part two of explaining why I chose which digimon for each character in my twst x digimon AU! Part: Jack

I first started out by deciding on Garurumon. It felt like an obvious choice to represent Jack being a wolf-beastman since in this AU things like beastmen/merfolk/fae don’t exist. Also, Garurumon could be used as a form of land transportation, like how you see in 02, when the kids would ride on the backs of their digimon partners.

After that, I decided on Gaomon because I didn’t want to make Jack’s line be the exact same as Matt’s from adventure. It’s also fun having Gaomon due to how he’s portrayed in Data Squad/Savers, as I feel that the two have a similar personality. (I did make a doodle for this, if you check my twst x digimon tag) and finally, I really like Gaomon because he’s described as being apart of the Gazimon family. Now, this AU focuses mostly on the freshman, however, if I were to give partners to the other twst characters, I would give Ruggie a Gazimon! Not only that, but one of Gazimon’s “main evolutions” (as shown by Wikimon’s bolded text) is Leomon! So, fun for the whole Savannaclaw family!

Moving on to the perfect stage, I wasn’t actually sure which I liked more. I first clicked on Caturamon’s page bc I thought it sounded like “cactus” and Jack really likes cacti and succulents (heh, imagine if I gave him a Togamon lol. I mean, both Togamon and Gaomon have boxing gloves, so who’s to say?) but then I realized who Caturamon was, and I feel like he fits in really well with the rest of the line! Of course, there is the issue of Caturamon being more of a “dog” than a “wolf”, but it’s not unforgivable. Plus, with Caturamon as the perfect level, the line separates itself further from Matt’s.

Though, I don’t really mind if it’s WereGarurumon either. First of all, the only difference between Epel’s Salamon line and Kari’s Gatomon line is that Salamon’s mega is Lovely Angemon and Gatomon’s is Magna/Holydramon and/or Ophanimon: Fall down mode. So clearly I don’t care to much about that as long as I can come up with a good reason for it to be so similar (though I do prefer differences to the (anime) protags), and, I can. Sure, it may not look as nice having Garurumon go from Quadrupedal to bipedal back to quadrupedal, but I don’t really care about that. In fact, I find that digimon evolution is so much fun because it’s so free and not afraid to make a line look bad as long as you can tell how you can get to point A from point B! Plus, I feel that going back to Jack, a werewolf is a very fitting partner for him, as he practically is one himself in canon, just a bit differently than normal. And I like how WereGarurumon is still a wolf, to once again, reference that Jack is a wolf beastman. So idk, I like both options so I just put them both for now. I probably will pick one or the other eventually, but for now, it’s just Caturamon or WereGarurumon.

Finally, the mega is MetalGarurumon. There’s no real “deep reasoning” for it like the previous picks, just, wolf mega that makes sense. That’s all.

Day 2: Sports Day [Relationship]

once Digimon Adventure progressed a little further, Gazimon was introduced. By this time, I'd already had my In-training, Rookie, and Champion mostly fleshed out [a cat-bat, tailypo-bat, and mink dragon], but I remember thinking, "darn, that one's really cute! Why does he have to be bad? And, working for a stupid Digimon?" [I was NOT an Etemon fan, haha]. I'd wished his ears were a little shorter so he'd be more cat-like than bunny-like with the tail, and that thought [and later Culumon] totally inspired Kitsukomon's ear shape [I'd also later use Gazi's arms as inspiration, as, like Gatomon using SaberLeomon's data or Gabumon using Garurumon's, Kitsukomon uses Gazi's arm/claw data for digging/harvesting food strength (Kitsukomon are confident, but weak!)]. Though I'm eager to claim Kitsukomon as my Digimon partner, without a doubt, a canon-only choice means Gazimon ✧

when Gatomon was introduced, I immediately loved her as well, again sad that she was portrayed as a bad guy. When she was partnered with Kari [my immediate favorite Digi-Destined], I felt a little like I would have had my "happy to vicariously live through them" character had she been introduced earlier. I guess that's for the better, since I'm happiest having my own Digimon partner, but I wanted so badly to be like Kari as a kid... I wanted to be gentle and read others better, be well-liked in general with a positive sibling relationship, while feeling cute, and with short hair no less [which I'd always wanted]. Also, just not tall for my age- I've been about five foot my whole life, making kindergarten through fifth grade very awkward for me, haha... She was just exactly how I wanted to be. I thought, "I wouldn't be so self-conscious if I were her, AND she has a cat-Digimon!" I just loved their partnership too, they worked so well with each other ✧

my tamer-self [and RL self for that matter] is actually very different from the personality I've given to Kitsukomon [like Gazimon- mischievous!], but the two still seem to work together well despite their differences. Binx is shy, and... not the most confident, but in the end, knows trying something is better than nothing sometimes, and living in their head can have some advantages [over-thinking/planning means at least there's A plan if desperate, right?], and Kitsukomon likes to push Binx to see their finer traits ["if you can have a partner like /me/ you have to be pretty special! J/k, j/k, know your strengths, Binx!"]. Kitsukomon wants to get Binx a little further from their comfort zone, and fortunately, one trait they now share is being verbal about their feelings. Binx isn't the best at guessing what's on someone's mind [their self-doubt makes them worry they're too bothersome], and greatly appreciates the open dialogue they share with their Digi-friend. Kitsukomon may come off a little too confident, but she means well, and the two have each other's back- you can count on that ✧

Gabumon!!!!!

Gabumon is a Child stage digimon like Agumon, and is kinda the second-most-notable digimon of the Adventure series – and as a result is possibly the second-most-iconic digimon in existence! It’s got a super distinct design concept, too; it’s a reptile digimon that wears a pelt made of the gathered data of a wolf-like mammal digimon, Garurumon. This is rooted in Gabumon’s intense timidness, with Garurumon’s pelt helping it to overcome its shy nature, its personality exhibiting a complete shift when the pelt is worn.

Without the pelt, though, Gabumon’s kinda just a dumpy yellow lizard thing not too unlike Agumon, albeit much less charismatic. This is an OUTSTANDING concept for a design, and it’s not even the sole thing going on here! Gabumon also has its prominent horn with an ornate almost circuitboard-like pattern, in addition to a mysterious marking on its belly. Where Agumon strived for simplicity and straightforwardness in its design, Gabumon commits to aesthetic and conceptual complexity.

Although its usual evolutionary line is associated with ice, and you would likely expect it to use ice to thematically contrast Agumon’s fire, Gabumon actually fights with fire as well! Albeit usually blue fire, so not totally indistinct from Agumon. Also, when I say “usual evolutionary line”, I mean the various digimon related to Garurumon; see, digimon don’t have set evolutionary paths, but they do have paths they tend to go on more often than not as determined by the virtual pets, games, and most influentially, the anime.

Which brings us to anime Gabumon! The Gabumon of Adventure is fiercely loyal to his partner, Yamato (Matt in the dub), exemplifying the digimon ideal of friendship and promoting their mutual growth. Gabumon in particular is willing to defy even allies in his devotion to Yamato. He’s also kind of a dweeb, which provides a neat contrast to Yamato’s stereotypical coolness, and it’s neatly reflective of his design effectively being a dorky lizard pretending to be a cool wolf.

In terms of colour variants, Gabumon has a Black version like Agumon, but we’ve already been over that concept a couple times now so let’s instead focus on the variegated cutie that is Psychemon, pictured. Psychemon is said to have a bright and showy personality that gives way to the shy timidness of Gabumon with the pelt removed, and its abilities all focus on the use of bright colours, such as colourful electric shocks and a dance that apparently spawns a wall of coloured blocks like a Tetris-style puzzle game. I can’t help wonder if that last bit is the result of a translation error or something, since it’s mentioned in the attack description but not the overall Digimon Reference Book description, but I hope it’s legit because that sounds amazing. But yeah, Psychemon’s superb!!!

Gabumon also has an X-Antibody form, with the concept being that it absorbed data from the pelt and transitioned from a Reptile-type to a proper Beast-type digimon. It’s said to favour rough, beastlike fighting styles, and it leaves one hand uncovered by the pelt so it can cloak it in flame for punching attacks. Neat concept overall I guess, like as a progression from base Gabumon, but it kinda ruins part of Gabumon’s whole cosplaying lizard appeal too. Hm.

Anyways, I adore Gabumon, and consider it one of the best-designed Child digimon in the franchise. It’s got such a unique concept and such a great execution of that concept, with a memorable and unique design that fits together seamlessly despite its very premise implying it wouldn’t.

And that pelt’s a premium scene kid hat/10.

Attention Digimon Fans

The Digimon Reference Book has been updated so all Xros Wars Digimon have proper Levels, to celebrate I’m going to give some personal highlights.

Wormmon has some competition for most benign Virus attribute Digimon. Does this mean that Gazimon finally has a Garurumon analogue?

On the flip side, we have another entry in the ‘Vaccines are not always heroes’ category which makes his closeness to the Virus attribute Lilithmon all the more amusing. Good alternative to the Virus attribute BanchoGolemon for Gogmamon.

And this one was completely predictable given that SkullKnightmon and by extension DarkKnightmon’s motives are jealously of his elder brother so Skull being Adult while Dark is Perfect makes perfect sense, if you pardon the phrasing. It’s also now a proper parallel with original Knightmon’s line with Skull as parallel of Gladimon.

Speaking of another one that seems obvious, many people rightly called this one as Perfect Level to bridge Wizardmon with Beelzemon.

On the unexpected side of things though, these two along with Gravimon and Zamielmon are Perfect Level while Dorbickmon, NeoMyotismon and Olegmon are Ultimate/Mega Level.

Damemon and Tuwarmon are a Mode Change/Slide Evolution again! Also they and ChuuChuumon have gone full Sukamon and Chuumon in terms of their Levels, Damemon/Tuwarmon being Adult while ChuuChuumon is Child.

Say hello to Troopmon’s Child Stage, a Digimon that attacks by killing itself. Why do I get the feeling its Digivolution is going to involve dying and having its soul being encased in rubber?

So Shoutmon gets a three stage line with the original as Child, this guy as Adult and OmegaShoutmon as Perfect.

I was honestly unsure if Starmon was going to be Adult to match the original or become the original’s Child stage, turns out it was the latter with Chibickmon and Pickmon predictably as the Infant and Infant II stages respectively. Speaking of...

ShootingStarmon is now an alternate Adult Stage for the Starmon line to bridge Starmon Child with SuperStarmon.
