The Shrine of St. Marcus of Blessed Memory
Volterra
"He is not coming, Aro."
"He will come."
Marcus was already weary of speech. He reached out a withered hand and Aro gratefully seized it.
He is not coming. I told you—he is clearly allied with the Cullens now. Do you doubt my gift at last, Brother?
Aro frowned and scanned the horizon again. The church lay quiet; the hills stood unmoved; the Tuscan countryside at their feet hummed with human comings and goings, oblivious to the fragrant trails left by immortals who had come and gone during the night.
In recent centuries, the flow of pilgrims had slowed to a trickle. Fewer than ten subjects had come to present themselves on St. Marcus's Day last year; the trial held for Edward and his human had been the more interesting attraction by far. But after the upheaval in the United States this past winter, nomads and covens had suddenly remembered to come renew their oaths on the appointed day. At least some had. Some were conspicuous in their absence.
Change was in the air. And how wonderfully delicious was its aroma! Aro closed his eyes and breathed in the cold scents of fading winter, carefully teasing out each one and reveling in it. So rarely now did he venture outside… so ready he was for everything to change, to smell new lands with his own nose. To be free of obligation, free of the greed that had consumed him for so long. To at last surrender himself to love instead of trying to control it. Marcus might not sense it yet, seeing only the outstretched arms of Aro's half of the bond, but Garrett would come. He was sure of it.
"I believe you," he said aloud to Marcus. "I expect no different."
Then why the risk? He may not come alone. I will fight to the death, but Chelsea's gift is not quick enough to—
Aro abruptly pulled his hand away, cutting off Marcus's feed midsentence. "Sometimes, Brother," he said testily, "I think you have lost your sense of adventure." It was a cruel thing to say, and he knew it. At least these cruelties would soon come to an end.
Chelsea glanced at both her masters in turn, undisturbed by the mystery. She had heard only halves of Aro's conversations for three thousand years.
"Try again, Master," she suggested. Marcus closed his eyes for a moment and shook his head.
They did not speak again. The stars began to fade away, each in its turn. When the eastern sky took on the first hint of warmth, Aro's confidence began to falter. Garrett had always come before sunrise on St. Marcus's Day before. What if he had changed after all? What if his yellow-eyed friends had turned not only his head, but also his heart?
For the hundred thousandth time since their return home ten weeks ago, the image of Garrett holding onto Kate for dear life—Kate, of all cursed immortals!—burned hot in Aro's memory. If we live through this, Garrett had told her, I'll follow you anywhere, woman.
Aro had turned the puzzle over in his mind again and again. Garrett had chosen those words with painful precision—they'd clearly been meant for Aro's ears. The very same words had been spoken by Aro himself a mere two centuries ago, the day he'd held Garrett in his arms and sworn to surrender his rule when the time was right. When he'd promised they would be together someday, assuming they both survived the war that was coming. He'd been shocked to discover that he meant it. If we live through it, he had sworn, I'll follow you anywhere.
Had Garrett thrown those words back in his face? A dagger under the ribs to punctuate his seditious speech? Or had it been a promise, bestowed on the only proxy Garrett could afford to use? What if—
"He comes," Marcus said.
"Where?" Aro cried, looking around.
Chelsea strained to sense the closing bond in every direction, but Marcus pointed toward the breaking dawn without hesitation. "Just there," he said.
Aro waited for Garrett to come to him as he always did. He shook out his robes until they settled into perfection and touched Marcus's hand three more times to snatch what insight he could. At last, the bittersweetness of Garrett's scent filled the air. Aro inched forward but held his ground. A moment later, the nomad's loping gait moved in stark relief against the glowing sun. The orange-gold eyes were a disturbing new feature, but everything else was unchanged. The long, sandy hair pulled back, the careless grin, the frayed leather coat, the restless twitch of an adventurous spirit.
Garrett frowned when he saw they were not alone. "What's this?" he asked as he drew close.
Aro took a breath to calm himself, clasping his hands behind his back so they would not betray his eagerness. "These are the two who know of us," he answered. "They insisted on coming to protect me from what is doubtless an attempt at assassination. And I insisted they come to show you—and them—that I am still in earnest."
"Assassination?" The grin was back. "What an interesting idea. Maybe I'll give that a try."
"Or perhaps I have brought them so I can end this threat to… what did you call it? My quest for domination?"
The barbs continued in the old comfortable way, drawing more alarmed looks from Chelsea and Marcus with every threat that was exchanged. They could sense that Aro was safe, but the words did not match the mood. How could they know it was a dance?
"I have information," Garrett said at last. "But for your ears alone. And especially not hers," he added fiercely, glaring at Chelsea. "I've learned enough about that one to ensure I never want to see her face again."
Chelsea waited for Aro's dismissal and promptly withdrew. Marcus followed.
"A kingmaker gift," Garrett scoffed once they were alone. "There can be no free world with that kind of power in it. Why didn't you tell me what she was?"
"I'm very happy to see you, too," Aro sighed.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Garrett said again. He made no move to come closer. "Have you used her on me like you have on all your sycophantic drones?"
"If I had, do you think you would have been able to accuse me in front of such a volatile assembly? You very nearly got us both killed."
"Fair point." Garrett's hand twitched toward Aro, but he stood his ground. "I'll give you my thoughts," he said in a lower voice. "I'll give you everything. But first you must know: I meant every word I said."
"I know of your alliances. The time has come."
"You're ready for this? Truly?"
Aro took one step closer. "Haven't I sworn it? You said you would have me dethroned or you wouldn't have me at all. But perhaps you have sworn other oaths since last we touched."
"They are my friends, Aro."
"I am thinking of one friend in particular."
Garrett laughed freely. "Oh, I see. You're jealous." He reached back and pulled the leather thong from his hair. "Come closer—her scent is still on me. Can you smell it?" He ruffled his hair in Aro's direction.
"You mock me."
"I'm not the one who still keeps a queen, who visits her bed every night when you swore—"
"The time has not yet come!" Aro hissed.
"That's not what you said a moment ago."
"Do you think it is easy, letting my empire run out through my fingers? For one such as you?!"
Garrett took another step closer, fuming. "Such as what? A filthy nomad? Is that all I am again, now that it comes to it?"
"I never said—you know I—come here, you unnaturally tall idiot of an assassin!"
Garrett closed the distance in a flash and his hands gripped Aro's robed shoulders hard enough to easily rend the flesh. For one thrilling second, Aro stared up into the strange yellow eyes and wondered if this was death after all—until Garrett's gentle, scratchy kiss met his lips and the thoughts came pouring in. Everything Garrett had said and done since their last meeting, every rebellious whisper, every adventure, every new alliance. And not once had Aro left his thoughts.
"Oh, my beloved," Aro whispered in relief at last. His eyes darted back and forth, blindly, at an impossible speed. Garrett waited patiently, frozen, until the barrage of thoughts ended and they were caught up.
"There, you see?" he said softly.
"If only I could share with you in this way, "Aro sighed. He finally rested against Garrett's chest, linking fingers so he could experience each thought in real time. "I have traveled every road with you now. I have felt your zeal for the revolution that is coming. I have even shared every kiss," he added with a chuckle.
Garrett smiled against Aro's mussed hair. "I told you, you're jealous."
"Shouldn't I be? You love her."
"I do."
"But not like you love me."
"No. But we both need comfort, and she is making me a better person."
"It sounds horrible."
"Oh, it is."
"And your eyes are hideous."
"Aren't they, though? I wonder what they would look like on you…"
Much of the morning passed in this way, with teasing and accusations and little whispered words of assurance to soothe the mistrust that would plague them until the war's end. They combed together through Garrett's recent travels and experiences. Aro shared all the news from Volterra and the wider vampire world. Garrett went through every detail he had observed as much as he could while staying with the Cullens. They considered nomads and covens and powerful gifts together and plotted the demise of the Volturi.
Never had two enemies rested in each other's arms so happily under their favorite tree, tyrant and traitor, as they guessed who would side with whom in the war to come, who would need to be killed, and in what order, and who might be spared, and who would be vital for the success of several possible battles. Who might fill the vacuum of power and whether it would be a paradise or a disaster. Whenever they ran out of things to say, they drew even closer and shared in love without words.
Night came again, and they spoke of their own plans: adventures that might be had, once it was all over. Places they wished to go, minds for Aro to touch. Then they drifted lazily back into their memories of 18th century Boston, to the night on which they had first met. Garrett had been an unruly newborn with an absent creator, captured and condemned for committing crimes he'd never been taught about. Aro had joined Caius and his cohort on that journey, curious about the new little nation trying to birth itself. He had taken Garrett's hand as a matter of procedure with little interest in his fate… and found himself staring into the soul of a man who pitied him. One glance, and Garrett could see that Aro was a man who ached to be free of intrigue, who was ready to escape the powerful throne he'd chained himself to. One touch, and Aro knew hope for the first time in a thousand years. The familiar banter began.
"You would have thought anything to get the noose off your neck," Aro mused.
"No doubt. And you would have fallen in love with the first foolhardy idiot who came along."
"No doubt."
They paused to watch the sunrise. Aro thought of all the sorrow that was to come and ached for it to already be past. "Can't we just run away right now?" he murmured.
"Aro," Garrett sighed. "A lot of people are already going to die so we can be together—so I can bring about a better world for our kind. I want to destroy as little as possible. Leaving Caius in charge is not the way."
"I will end him myself when the time comes," Aro said. "Poor Caius. I owe him that much."
"And Marcus?"
Aro sighed deeply. Marcus had been his first friend, his true brother. And all of Marcus's suffering was his own doing—just another thread of poison in the web he'd woven to stay in power this long. Another thing he was too afraid to share with Garrett. "I will give Marcus whatever he asks. If he chooses to live, he will not seek power for himself." He tugged thoughtfully on the ends of Garrett's hair, ruminating. "When we faced each other across the snowy field in December, when everyone was so ready to fight, why did you not let it happen? I truly thought you wanted it—that was why I kept pushing."
Garrett shook his head. "Bella's shield is the key I've been looking for all this time. We'll need her to defeat you—and she wasn't ready. I also wanted to meet with you again first, to make sure of our plans."
"To make sure of my cooperation," Aro corrected gently.
"Yes. It's time for the Volturi to fall, regardless. But this way, I will do everything I can to ensure there will be one survivor." He kissed Aro's ear. "Besides," he said with a laugh and a shove as he stood up, "I thought you might like a few more months with your scrolls and your baths."
"The baths especially," Aro sighed, and he rose to his feet too.
"Oh, cheer up. We'll get a dog or something."
"You'd just eat it," Aro grumbled. Then he stilled. "Months? Not years?"
Garrett shrugged. "I need to take advantage of the revolutionary spirit I've stirred up. I'll send word when the force is gathered. The first battle will be centered around one of the Cullens' allies—I'll make sure Bella comes and Alice doesn't."
"Alice," Aro said wistfully.
I'm going to miss that gold digger's glint in your eye," Garrett said. "Really, I am. I can't fathom what it feels like to walk away, after all these years."
"It feels like freedom, I think," Aro said. They drew together one last time and Garrett bent down for a final, lingering kiss. Aro reached up and marveled anew at the stubble on the face he now loved more than power itself. Most male vampires either sculpted their beards to perfection or plucked everything away to be clean-shaven. Just another way Garrett did not fit any of the molds he was accustomed to casting—another way he could not be tamed. Another way to start over.
"We may never meet again," Garrett said when he pulled away. For once, the mischievous glint in his eye was dulled with sadness. "You know I can't promise."
Aro smiled. "I wouldn't have agreed if I wasn't ready to face that chance. And I am ready. My world has grown so stale I can no longer bear it. Something needs to change, and I am glad I have found something worth changing for—so very glad."
Garrett opened his mouth to reply, then closed it again to offer the careless grin Aro loved so much. He backed away, holding onto Aro's fingers as long as he could still reach them. When the link was broken, Aro closed his eyes tightly. He did not open them again until Garrett was gone. Perhaps it had all been a dream after all.
But there, in his hand, lay the crumpled leather thong that Garrett had taken from his hair.

Couldn't find the fic I wanted to read, so I wrote it myself and then realized it hit so close to home I couldn't immediately share it. That being said I'm very proud of it, and I hope it finds the people who need a story like this but have never found it
Aromantic Keith who never told anyone that—at least, not before Lance said "I really like you."
Full summary under the cut
For the record, no one told Keith that Lance was in love with him until Lance said those short words and sent him into a tailspin of sorts. This is not his fault.
On the one hand, Keith would’ve been absolutely fine without their relationship changing dynamics. On the other hand, he wouldn’t have ever known it could unless Lance had confessed, and now that he knows, he wants something other than just friendship.
The third thing is that Keith needs to fix this.

4:00-6:00 AM (Approx.) - The witnesses and wolves gather in the clearing
8:30 AM (Approx.) - Nessie wakes and Bella dresses her, putting the go, bag on her shoulders and warns her that she may have to flee with Jacob
8:33 AM (Approx.) - Bella and Nessie join the others in the clearing, with the witnesses arranged strategically around them

8:35 AM (Approx.) - The Wolf Packs make their presence known, causing the Volturi to take pause; Edward advises Carlisle to make the first diplomatic move, while they hesitate
8:36 AM (Approx.) - Carlisle initiates contact; Aro accuses him of assembling an army; Carlisle assures him that it is an a misunderstanding and that Renesmee is not what she appears to be.
8:37 AM (Approx.) - Caius calls on Irina to confirm her testimony; Irina is unable to do so, as Renesmee has visibly grown since she last saw her; Edward comes forward to explain and Bella, prompted by defensive instincts, gains full control over her shielding ability; Edward communicates the situation to Aro through Aro's mind-reading ability
8:38 AM (Approx.) - Aro is surprised by the information gained from Edward and asks to be introduced to Renesmee; Bella brings her forward with Emmett and Jacob as backup; Aro greets Renesmee and has a brief exchange with her
8:39 AM (Approx.) - Aro confers with the other leaders; Caius is skeptical despite Aro's assurances of the veracity of Renesmee's parentage; he also questions the presence of the "werewolves", and Edward and Aro both point out that the wolves present do not fit the criteria of true "werewolves"

8:42 AM (Approx.) - Caius has Irina summarily executed, ostensibly as a warning against false witness, but in truth to ellicit a violent response from Tanya and Kate, which is successful; Carlisle restrains Tanya easily; Garrett successfully subdues Kate after she repels Rosalie and Emmett, aided by Zafrina who uses her power of illusion to blind the sisters, and Bella who shields Garrett from the shocks of Kate's ability.
8:45 AM (Approx.) - Carlisle reasons with Tanya and Kate, much to Aro and Caius's displeasure; the Volturi witnesses falter, shaken by Irina's sudden and apparently arbitrary execution
8:47 AM (Approx.) - Aro asks to speak with the Cullens' witnesses, interviewing Amun and Siobhan, who both witness to Renesmee's growth and cognition
8:52 AM (Approx.) - Despite the positive testimonials, Aro posits that Renesmee may still pose a threat in the future, as nature after maturation is unknown and unknowable
9:00 AM (Approx.) - Garrett stands up and makes a short speech both in favour of the Cullens, and warning to be wary of the Volturi as an overreaching entity
9:05 AM (Approx.) - Aro interviews his own witnesses; Charles and Makenna make a statement that they see no harm Renesmee or the Cullens and promptly leave
9:08 AM (Approx.) - Aro and the other leaders adjourn to counsel again; the Cullens prepare for a fight;l
9:09 AM (Approx.) - Chelsea uses her ability to try and break the Cullen side's bonds but is being thwarted by a Bella's shield; Jane, likewise attempts to use her ability and is also repelled, as is Alec; Benjamin opens a fissure in the ground between the Cullens and the Volturi
9:11 AM (Approx.) - The Cullen side stake their claims on targets in the anticipated battle
9:12 AM (Approx.) - Pre-ambling their "vote", Aro extends invitations to certain members on the Cullen side who might wish to join the Volturi ranks--all flatly refuse
9:13 AM (Approx.) - Caius votes in favour of eliminating Renesmee, Marcus against, leaving Aro with the deciding vote; Edward interrupts, asking whether, if there was a way to prove incontrovertibly that Renesmee poses no future threat, that would negate any need for a vote: Aro confirms this.
9:15 AM (Approx.) - Alice and Jasper enter the clearing with three others; Kachiri, the third member of the Amazon coven: Huilen, a vampire; and her nephew Nahuel, a fully grown half vampire, half human hybrid
9:17 AM (Approx.) - Huilen gives witness that Nahuel was born to conceived by her sister after nightly visitations from a vampire; she describes her sister's pregnancy, very similar to Bella's experience carrying Renesmee, and relates how her sister died giving birth to Nahuel, who bit Huilen, transforming her into a vampire
9:25 AM (Approx.) - Nahuel testifies that he grew to full maturity in seven years and stopped ageing, and that he is one of several vampire-human hybrids sired by Joham, though all the rest are female, and none of them venomous
9:30 AM (Approx.) - Confronted with a mountain of evidence, Aro votes against eliminating Renesmee and declares their business with the Cullens finished
9:33 AM (Approx.) - Aro and Carlisle exchange parting words, and the Volturi leave
10:00 AM - 3:00 PM (Approx.) - The Cullens' witnesses depart, the Denalis leaving last with Garrett in tow, the latter having formed an attachment with Kate
4:00 PM (Approx.) - The Cullens sit, gathered in the great room being debriefed by Alice and Edward; they are joined by Huilen and Nahuel their only remaining guests; Bella is slightly unnerved by Nahuel's staring at her and Renesmee.
9:00 PM (Approx.) - Edward and Bella bid the family goodnight and take Renesmee home to the cottage; on the way, Bella mentions Nahuel's staring to Edward, who corrects her misconception that Nahuel was staring at Renesmee when, rather he was staring at her, Bella. Edward explains that Nahuel takes comfort in seeing Bella alive and holding her daughter, as he has always felt guilt for causing his own mother's death
9:10 PM (Approx.) - Edward and Bella put Renesmee to bed, then go to their room, where Bella reveals to Edward that she can, with concentration, retract her mental shield and allow him to see her thoughts, showing him all of her memories of their life together from her perspective; Edward is shocked and delighted. They kiss, and then presumably fuck.
The End

What are your thoughts on Garret’s speech in breaking dawn
To those who don't remember, Garrett gives a rousing speech to those gathered where he explains that the Volturi are the bloody English tyrants who hate freedom and the Cullens are hobbits.
Aro, Caius, and Marcus have learned that Renesmee is no immortal child, but they have no guarantee she won't be dangerous in some way later on. No one does.
Garrett steps up to witness for the Cullens, which in itself is an interesting decision this late in the trial. He hasn't observed anything about Renesmee that Aro hasn't, and he can no more guarantee that she won't be dangerous than anybody else in the clearing can.
This of course is no problem for Garrett, because to him the point isn't whether Renesmee is dangerous or not, but that he has a personal vendetta. His speech isn't addressed to the Volturi, but to everyone else, as he explains how the Volturi hate freedom and people who are different, and they want to kill the Cullens because of the diet. The speech quickly descends into American Revolution rhetoric and Garrett threatening the Volturi.
I think this is one of those posts where if I don't pull out the actual text you people will think I'm exaggerating or misrepresent Garrett, and also because I had genuinely forgotten how insane it was .
Feast your eyes on Garrett's slightly abbreviated speech (slightly abbreviated because the guy just kept going):
These ancient ones did not come here for justice as they told you. We suspected as much, and now it has been proved. They came, misled, but with a valid excuse for their action. Witness now as they seek flimsy excuses to continue their true mission. Witness them struggle to find a justification for their true purpose—to destroy this family here.
The Volturi come to erase what they perceive as the competition. Perhaps, like me, you look at this clan’s golden eyes and marvel. They are difficult to understand, it’s true. But the ancient ones look and see something besides their strange choice. They see power. (Breaking Dawn, page 454)
This is just the beginning, but it's not a speech you give if you want to deescalate the situation. This is a call to arms.
Garrett goes on to explain how the Cullens may be weird freaks, but it's okay because their quaint little way of life is actually quite peaceful and noble. And if it sounds like Garrett is describing hobbits then that's because judging by this speech, that's how he views them.
I... did not remember this was the context for his "They love each other more than we can understand" blurb. God, turns out Garrett was just channeling Arthur Weasley. "I've made a little study of them!"
I have witnessed the bonds within this family—I say family and not coven. These strange golden-eyed ones deny their very natures. But in return have they found something worth even more, perhaps, than mere gratification of desire? I’ve made a little study of them in my time here, and it seems to me that intrinsic to this intense family binding—that which makes them possible at all—is the peaceful character of this life of sacrifice. There is no aggression here like we all saw in the large southern clans that grew and diminished so quickly in their wild feuds. There is no thought for domination. And Aro knows this better than I do. (454)
Aro is me in this interaction:
I watched Aro’s face as Garrett’s words condemned him, waiting tensely for some response. But Aro’s face was only politely amused, as if waiting for a tantrum-throwing child to realize that no one was paying attention to his histrionics. (454)
Yes, Bella, that's exactly what he's doing. There are no grand points being made here, there's just Garrett telling everybody that he thinks Carlisle is a hobbit while Carlisle is on trial for having created an immortal child. Garrett was called in to witness saying this wasn't the case, but Garrett doesn't want to do that. Garrett want to incite an insurrection instead.
I can't stress that part enough, Garrett makes a speech that essentially boils down to "We can't tolerate the Volturi ruling over us". Renesmee aside, Garrett just gave the Volturi a very good reason to destroy the Cullens.
He then makes it worse.
Carlisle assured us all, when he told us what was coming, that he did not call us here to fight. These witnesses”—Garrett pointed to Siobhan and Liam—“agreed to give evidence, to slow the Volturi advance with their presence so that Carlisle would get the chance to present his case.
But some of us wondered”—his eyes flashed to Eleazar’s face—“if Carlisle having truth on his side would be enough to stop the so-called justice. Are the Volturi here to protect the safety of our secrecy, or to protect their own power? Did they come to destroy an illegal creation, or a way of life? Could they be satisfied when the danger turned out to be no more than a misunderstanding? Or would they push the issue without the excuse of justice? (454)
"You thought some of us came here to fight, not witness. And you were right!"
I want to know what Carlisle was thinking this entire time.
And I can't stress enough, Garrett is saying the above without any proof. Aro says, "We don't know what hybrids are and have no guarantee Renesmee couldn't become a danger", Garrett says this proves his corruption and ascribes the motive as being the Cullens' diet.
Garrett then wraps up his speech, and... uh:
So now there are more questions, questions that you must answer. Who rules you, nomads? Do you answer to someone’s will besides your own? Are you free to choose your path, or will the Volturi decide how you will live?
I came to witness. I stay to fight. The Volturi care nothing for the death of the child. They seek the death of our free will. (454)
I... uh.
Carlisle, I'm sure is breathing into a paper bag at this point.
And I'm left with the impression that Garrett has spent the past three centuries feeling very revolutionary but not having anyone to revolution against, so now that he's finally got the Volturi he's gonna revolution them so hard.
The Volturi never told anyone how to live. Vampires can do whatever they want, just don't expose the secret. The Volturi never had a problem with the animal diet, their leader has been friends with Carlisle for centuries and was pleased to hear Carlisle had found a coven of like-minded. There are no taxes, no institutions, if you want to live your life never interacting with the Volturi then you can. Garrett is fabricating an oppressor so he'll have someone to fight, which the Cullens never even asked him to do.
Garrett ends his speech on an explicit threat to the Volturi and trying to intimidate their witnesses into joining him, deliberately trying to turn this into a fight even though the Cullens only asked him to stand as a witness and made it clear they wanted a peaceful resolution.
“You might consider joining us. If you think the Volturi will let you live to tell this tale, you are mistaken. We may all be destroyed”—he shrugged—“but then again, maybe not. Perhaps we are on more equal footing than they know. Perhaps the Volturi have finally met their match. I promise you this, though—if we fall, so do you.” (455)
My thoughts on Garrett's speech is that the Cullens never should have invited him.
(Since the guy somehow kept going, feast your eyes on him antagonizing Aro:
He ended his heated speech by stepping back to Kate’s side and then sliding forward in a half-crouch, prepared for the onslaught. Aro smiled. “A very pretty speech, my revolutionary friend.” Garrett remained poised for attack. “Revolutionary?” he growled. “Who am I revolting against, might I ask? Are you my king? Do you wish me to call you master, too, like your sycophantic guard?” “Peace, Garrett,” Aro said tolerantly. “I meant only to refer to your time of birth. Still a patriot, I see.” Garrett glared back furiously. (455)
In which Garrett, having just made a call to revolution, tries to catch Aro on having called him revolutionary. Praise be to Aro for not falling for the bait.
Just........
Rock on, Garrett.)

Hm… thinking about Lance being closeted about being aro because amanormativity was always so present in his life it feels dangerous to admit he might not want that. But then they do something like make cupcakes and Pidge asks Hunk to add some fondant in the aroace and lesbian flags colors on their cake, and Keith asks for mlm and agender and aromantic and Lance just… He can’t believe how easily they’ve asked for this (but they’re in space and they only have each other so it feels easier to come out). He asks for the bi flag, and then, when everyone’s turned around, he adds the aro flag with shaky hands, almost scrapping it off entirely before he catches Keith’s eyes. Keith just looks at where his hands are gripping the spoon, and then he looks back at his face and just smiles, and it changes everything. Because no one says anything but Pidge high five’s him and Hunk looks at him gently like he knew, and the altean ask about the flags but don’t comment on Lance being aromantic.
There’s still awkward congratulations and thanks from Shiro and his heart beating in his ears when they talk about dating (because Lance is Lance and so everyone has always expected him to date). But there’s also a new, strange understanding between Keith and him, and the looks Keith gives him when an alien flirts with it are just hilarious.

MASTERLIST #2
Navigation!
Let me know if there are any characters you’d like added and I’ll look into it! :)
Smut = **
What I will NOT write for under any circumstance: R@pe, incest, anything to do with pee or poo, hardcore bdsm or anything like that type of smut, kidnapping reader for love, anything stalker, abuse unless it’s for angst but I won’t go into detail about the abuse (though I will do like slapping/spanking for smut it cannot have malicious meaning behind it, and there is always consent for that)
Also let me put this by itself, pregnancy is also way off the table. It’s 6 feet underground. I understand it’s part of life and it’s beautiful , and that’s for people to decide but personally I find just the concept of that horrifying and gross. I do breeding kink yes, but no description of pregnancy. (No hate to pregnant people I just can’t stand the concept of pregnancy in any form.)

After a battle, Aro reads the memories of his guards to check who they’ve killed so he knows who to go after or have followed.
The Romanians, for example, must have left some of Aro’s envoys alive so they can convey messages back to him, such as their response to his threat of war. They must have seen the faces of hundreds of humans and vampires in the Romanians’ castles’ walls and the surrounding areas. Therefore Aro knows the face of perhaps most of those who were at least present with the Romanians at the time the war began.
Thus only Vladimir and Stefan remaining alive really does mean, truly, thoroughly, that they are the very last remaining people from their coven and its allies. Aro saw everyone who was loyal to them and killing them was ticking off a to-do list.
Now Aro knows everyone Edward knows, and the thoughts of those around him, which undoubtedly reveal other allies of the Cullens who didn’t turn up to the confrontation.
This is absolutely terrifying. Just like with the Romanian war, Aro could stalk or kill all of these people, having his eye on more people than Edward probably realises. He may have already started, to prevent a repeat of the Cullens being able to amass a force at short notice.
This must be why Vladimir and Stefan do not create another force of their own and opt to join another’s - the risk of all their loved ones’ lives passes on to the leaders of the force they joined, not to them.
It doesn’t seem like Bella understands this. Her quick willingness (and Garrett’s) to decide she may again stand against the Volturi in the future puts everyone’s lives in jeopardy. Not only were those who stood with Vladimir and Stefan slaughtered, but their families and friends too, and those who just happened to be temporarily in their castles when war came.
Bella has sentenced everyone she loves to death with some words
(I also have a post on how tbh Aro has been nothing but kind to her after he’s let her live every time she might have broken the law, notably in NM, so she should like him a lot more than she does. Her inability to understand just how merciful he’s been so far and to just talk badly of him and stand up in arms against him will be a grave mistake (and insult))

Thinking about if pregnancy had not been possible, hybrids didn't exist, and Bella was turned by choice rather than necessity as originally planned.
Also thinking about how we know Aro wants Alice and Edward and is very curious about how Bella's gift is going to turn out.
Thinking about how SM invented the new character, Mele, in Life and Death so Suplicia could steal Aro's power for herself blah blah blah. But how SM has said that Aro would have had Mel(e) quietly destroyed in the Twilight universe because Aro wouldn't want a power-stealing vampire out there in the world.
Would he really want a powerful shield like Bella out there in the world, either? Surely he'd want her either a) on his side or b) dead. Because if she's not on his side, then her shield against psychic powers neutralizes all Aro's best weapons. Not good.
So how would THAT all play out? Is Bella planning to make the Volterra trip and then Alice has a Doom Vision of Aro discovering how powerful her gift actually is and then coming up with charges against the Cullens (does Charlie know too much? Was working with the shifters against the newborns illegal? Is the coven too big? Too conspicuous? etc) so he can acquire her? Does he try to make a deal with Bella that if she stays in Volterra he'll spare the others? Does Alice then run through dozens of scenarios trying to find a future where half the coven isn't wiped out while the other half is conscripted into the Volturi? "No Bella you can't go to Volterra!!" "But we have to let the Volturi know I've been changed." "But they can't meet you in person!"
This would feel like a more natural progression from New Moon and Eclipse and doesn't need the baby at all. Lots of different ways it could play out, too. Do we end up with a 'mental chess' non-fight like in BD? Do they actually fight and win (SM wouldn't let them lose)? Are the Volturi dethroned, or reformed, or what? It was always weird in BD that we have this big speech from Garrett about how corrupt the Volturi are and then everyone is just content with the "live to fight another day" ending rather than taking on the System. Pretty unresolved, although I understand that SM does have some plans for future stories so that explains it. But in a Renesmee-less confrontation, would there be a more permanent resolution for the Volturi conflict because there are no future Renesmee stories to tell?
