The way people recommend TGCF as an alternative to shows like Heartstopper or Love Simon is so funny to me. That's like if I told you I wanted to watch a movie with a het relationship in it and my favorite movie is Pretty In Pink and then you told me I should go watch LOTR

i actually really love how samantha shannon is handling trans/nonbinary characters in her roots of chaos world. they blend seamlessly into her world building, so much so that i don't always notice there's something different. non binary noble? they sure as fuck don't want to be called lord or lady! they are styled 'lade'.
someone uses they/them pronouns? cool! we're not going to waste time going through an explaining that. it's just instant, all our characters refer to the person's preferred pronouns without any second thought.
she really keeps saying, yeah? this story has dragons and witches and wyverns. and it's gonna be queernorm too. don't like it? well fuck off.

Source is Red Hood: Outlaw #41, and you won’t find Red Hood: Outlaw #1-25 anywhere, because the series started with #26. Inexplicably, DC decided to keep the numbering from RHatO: Rebirth, despite giving the series a new fucking name. Just in case you’re ever on the DC Infinite app scrolling through comics and wondering how you missed 25 issues of a Red Hood-centric series. Not that I have experience there. I hate everything.

I know it was unexpected for plenty of people but I LOVE the implication that in S3 willow is the one rocking a tough, practical jacket and hunter is the one in the cozy nerd sweater. Especially in the context of how they've always viewed each other?
Willow has always been the "leather jacket-wearing bad-boy with a heart of gold" in hunters eyes when you think about it. She's strong, plays a flashy contact sport that's essentially fantasy-roller derby, stands up to authority and fights for a cause, all the while being sweet and silly and sensitive and secretly insecure but healing from something traumatic that happened to her.
And on the flip side, willow didn't meet Hunter when he was the golden guard, she met him when he was pretending to be a normal kid. He was weird and awkward and overzealous and stand offish. His best friend is a bird and his name is Caleb Jasper Bloodwilliams. BUT as the day goes on he makes friends, acts dorky and encouraging, does something really weird and messed up but (most important to willow) demonstrates that he can mend the mistakes he makes. He's soooo the sheltered "good" girl learning to come out of her shell and willow is the risk taking beefcake who shows him the world. It's disgusting and I love it

Yk, I've been thinking of Eddie's traumas and rather obvious Compulsory Heterosexuality-settings, and how it's influencing his life choices. How it's stopping buddie from happening.
I think where Eddie is at, mentally... Is a sort of in-between place between denial and acceptance. I think he knows he isn't straight. I think he may even have an idea of his feelings for Buck.
I think he also thinks that none of it matters. Cannot matter.
Not necessarily due to internalized homophobia. Don't get me wrong, I think there's also some of that going on - his upbringing was obviously quite traditional. I think he feels like being anything other than straight has never been an option, not for him. There's this expectation to be a catholic macho man, to marry a woman, to bring in the bread instead of really being someone who is solely responsible for parenting.
Even though he has queer friends, I think that he looks at them from the outside thinking "Good for them. I support them. I love them. That can't be my life though. I don't have that option."
This feeling of "not an option", I think, has been sort of... Where Eddie has drifted by no choice, and now he cannot imagine changing course.
It's about Chris and about Eddie's traumas. It started with Chris. He and Shannon were very young and the pregnancy was an accident. Eddie's upbringing was all about "be a man!" so Eddie tried to be a man. Take responsibility. He proposed to Shannon, tried to step into those big man shoes. It was hard. He struggled. Ran.
His desperate attempt to escape was another one that veered him more and more towards those "must be straight" settings.
He enlisted in the army, went to a warzone. That environment... Obviously further enforced these macho man settings. Must fit in.
Then, the traumas. Losing his army friends. Losing Shannon. Grief.
I think these events had a hugely repressive impact on Eddie. He'd loved these people, they were some of the closest human bonds he had. And then they were just... Gone. No warning. All of them young. Dead. Just like that.
I think these repeated sudden losses made him terrified of forming new bonds. You could not trust them to stay.
So it was safer to avoid getting close to anyone like that again. Love terrified him now, getting invested in anyone terrified him.
Obviously, he could not stop himself from loving Chris. In fact, Chris was now his entire focus.
And Eddie was scared. He needed to do this right, to be a good dad. Make sure that Chris had a good, stable childhood and would grow up to be a stable, happy adult.
But there were already so many things that were going against that - Chris thriving.
Chris was born with special needs. Eddie had freaked out and abandoned him. Then he'd returned... And Shannon had abandoned Chris. Then Eddie had uprooted them by moving. Then Christopher's mother died. And the only parent he had left was Eddie, with a job that could kill him any day.
So many earthshakes already in Christopher's life.
So it was essential that nothing else would make his childhood any harder.
Now, how could Eddie make sure that Christopher had a normal life? By finding Christopher a new mother figure. Obviously.
Because what Eddie needed... It wasn't important. All that mattered was Chris. Stepmother would provide stability.
If the idea of a relationship with a man ever entered Eddie's mind? Not an option.
It might make Christopher's life more difficult. It might be hard for Chris. What if people picked on him for having two dads? Unacceptable idea. He couldn't add more hardship to his son's life.
So a relationship with a man... Was not an option for Eddie. Could not be.
And anyway, Eddie did not even want to be with anyone he could love.
Love was terrifying. Love... You couldn't trust it. Love abandoned you. Love meant grief.
So... Even if there was someone in Eddie's life that he was drawn to? Buck.
Must suppress the idea. Ignore it. Not an option.
In so many ways. Buck was a man. Straight. Had a dangerous job. Buck could die any day.
Eddie had already almost seen it happen.
So the idea of getting any more closer to Buck was a terrifying one.
And anyway, not even an option. Buck dated women. Buck was straight.
.....
So. This is what I think Eddie's mind looks like... So far.
This is also why I'm so fucking excited about Buck dating a man and coming out!!!
I think this will be the perfect trigger for eventually turning buddie into a canon couple.
Buck coming out and dating a man will make Eddie see that hey... Christopher would be perfectly capable handling the potential stress of growing up with two dads.
We already know that Chris adores Buck. He's also super impressed with Tommy. They're his heroes, Buck is one of his favorite, closest people.
And Chris has grown up around queer people!! Hen, Karen. Their rainbow family. Which is doing perfectly fine.
I think Eddie needs to see and realise that. He needs to see Chris hanging out with out and proud queer men whom he idolizes.
Eddie also needs to see Buck with a man. And realise that the idea of him and Buck ISN'T an impossible, sad fever dream... Because turns out that there's potential. Buck isn't straight!! Buck dates men. Eddie could date men, too...
And Eddie needs to realise that he cannot avoid pain by trying to keep his distance. Pining for Buck, seeing him with another man, will be torture as well.
Also, Buck won't quit his dangerous job. Eddie won't quit his dangerous job. That won't change no matter what their relationship is like.
So there really is no good reason to not make that leap, and pursue Buck if there is any chance that the feelings might be mutual. If Buck is single again.
And yes. It's scary. He might still lose Buck any day... But life is short. And being just Buck's friend would not halt the grief... How could it? Eddie already loves him.

I know that this discussion has been made countless times at this point, but I might as well make it again.
Anyone who calls Yamato a woman doesn’t understand his character, there, I said it.
I recently stumbled across that side of the one piece fandom. As in, the side that gets violent over Yamato’s gender identity. I recently had the unfortunate privilege of stumbling across an entire YouTube comment section ranting and unanimously agreeing that Yamato is a woman and cussing out all the people who “head-cannon” him as a man.
Whelp. It’s rant time again.
For starters, I accept Yamato as a man. A trans man that doesn’t necessarily pass, but has a respected gender identity by all he associates with (as far as I’ve watched).
I have multiple trans friends and family members in my life, and as an LGBT individual myself any and all representation is a breath of fresh air. Especially in shonen anime, which is the sole form of media that I consume at this point.
I’ve already made my rant about the queer rep in Impel Down, and it’s about time I spun my spiel about the upsetting discourse over Yamato and his gender identity. Because that’s exactly what it is, upsetting.
When Yamato was first introduced he wore a mask and baggy clothing, he didn’t speak and was mysteriously called nothing other than “Kaido’s son.” He was hyped up for episodes on end before he finally joined the plot, and finally spoke. In the distinct voice of a woman.
Clearly, any and all gender norms have been obliterated at this point.
When Yamato finally took his mask off and declared himself Kozuki Oden, Luffy reacted how all of us did:
Tumblr media
It’s exactly what all of us were thinking, right? How can that be Kaido’s son?
Then of course Yamato responds with this:
Tumblr media
And we have our answer. Yamato is a trans man, and the entire Beast Pirates crew respects that. It’s incredible, isn’t it? I was blown away, you should have heard me squealing, it was ridiculous.
Luffy was a dick about it initially, but from the moment Yamato declared himself a man Luffy referred to him by his preferred pronouns for the rest of the arc.
“You can trust him.” “He’s going to help you.”
(Paraphrased. Didn’t dig up a screen shot cause I’m lazy. Took place when Luffy left Yamato with Momo and Shinobu on his way to the roof.)
Conversation over, right?! Wrong!!
Cause some people don’t like that. They see huge tits and refuse to accept this character as anything but a woman.
It doesn’t matter that Yamato is referred to using he/him pronouns by literally everyone, it doesn’t matter that Kaido consistently calls him his son, and it certainly doesn’t matter that Yamato personally declares himself a man.
They say that Yamato is biologically female; “it says it on the vivre card!” “A manga panel calls her Kaido’s daughter!” All things I found in that comment section, repeated again and again. Of course there’s the color spread covered in big boobs and bikinis, and that’s obviously proof that Yamato is a woman like all the rest. Because all of the color spreads happened in the cannon story and must be taken as hard fact.
Tumblr media
I mean clearly.
Tumblr media
Canon, 100%.
Tumblr media
No question.
“Cause Oda literally said it himself…” right? Yeah. Sure. I’ll believe it when I see an SBS or a quote from the man himself.
I understand where they’re coming from, I really do. Yeah, Yamato looks like a woman. Yeah, boobs exist. Yeah, both voice actors are female.
But all of this evidence is strictly surface level, and these people ignore the personality of the character they claim to defend on top of the way they interact with other characters in the series.
They say that Yamato only looks up to Oden, that he’s not really a trans man, he’s just “larping.” Playing pretend.
They claim to be defending Yamato’s identity. They claim that those who call him a man are trying to “steal” the character and “gender her.” Yet… doesn’t their entire argument revolve around gendering that exact character?
By that logic, who gendered the character in the first place? I dunno, maybe the guy who’s wrote the dialogue? I mean maybe???
At the end of the day I can get ticked off all I want, but people will think what that think and all I can do is try not to let it affect me. However…I know transphobia when I see it. I see transphobic discourse within my own family. I know what that shit looks like. Refusal to respect pronouns. “Well you don’t look male.” “You were born female.” “It’s all just a phase, they’re confused.”
Sound familiar?
People can believe what that like, but it doesn’t mean that what they believe is right. It’s upsetting to see this argument so often. It’s all over the fandom, there’s no way to avoid it.
People claim to be defending the gender of this character, they act as if Yamato is being attacked by the evil gays who will stop at nothing to turn everyone trans. I’m not joking, that’s literally how they worded in that battlefield of a comment section.
Yamato’s gender expression is confusing, we know. That’s the point! Oda said fuck gender conformity all the way back in Alabasta, and he isn’t stopping now. What we see in Yamato is trans representation, but not a clean rep like Kiku, we have a man who doesn’t pass. Guess what? Not all trans people pass! That doesn’t make them any less trans, and your black and white perception of their gender doesn’t debunk their identity.
I genuinely don’t understand why there has to be so much discourse over this topic. Like you’re literally arguing with Luffy himself at this point. 😔🙄

Dinluke is such a fascinating and delicious ship because, like, Luke embodies the curly blonde haired idealistic twink darling AND an overpowered eldritch monster of UNSPEAKABLE POWER and ALSO a daddy issues kid who was and is very much underloved. And Din is just a terrifyingly talented warrior with the simple needs of following a code and loving his son plus he’s also so touch starved that feeling could probably power an entire planet.
The threads I always want to pull on are: Luke as both a darling and a terror, straddling both spaces, and getting Din’s goddamn helmet off in the most angsty ways possible.
I THINK THERE IS A FIC IN THERE???
