PKMN — Consolation

Notes: JN117 made me sad, especially since no one comforted Iris when she started crying. In my sadness I was struck with this idea, and so I decided to write a little tag for the episode to make myself feel better. This was written with the idea in mind that the battles don't actually happen one right after the other, but that instead there is time between the matches to reset the arena / give the next opponents time to prepare / etc.

The grass beneath Iris’ knees was as warm as the sun that filtered through the leaves above her head, but as she scrunched the blades of grass between her fingers to feel the dirt under her fingernails, it still wasn’t enough to stop her choking—from tears or the stench of car exhaust in the air, she wasn’t sure.

Wyndon had many little parks like this throughout the city—little patches of greenery interspersed between the paved streets and aging concrete buildings. When she’d first arrived, Iris had thought it nice that they hadn’t completely walled their city off from nature, that they’d allowed some trees to grow and grass to flourish. But now, fresh from her televised first-round defeat, it didn’t feel like enough. She hated the city. She wanted to run, to sprint into Galar’s wild area and not look back. She wanted to climb into the clustered boughs above her, but her Champion dress made it impossible. She swallowed hard against another sob and pressed herself closer to the tree trunk beside her. Ash’s battle was going to start soon. She needed to go cheer for him, just like he’d cheered for her. But going back to the green room would mean seeing everyone again—would mean seeing Diantha and Cynthia, and for them to see her like this, fresh from a loss and eyes red-rimmed because she couldn’t stop herself crying—

Iris sucked in another shaking breath, and pressed her sleeves into her eyes.

No, she couldn’t face them like this. She couldn’t. But she had to. She was Unova’s Champion, and Champions didn’t fall to pieces just because they lost a match. She was Unova’s Champion, and Ash’s friend, and so she had to go back to watch the next match and cheer for him and put her best foot forward—

“Excuse me—can I sit here?”

Iris jumped, the fabric of her dress catching on the rough bark of the tree and her feet tangling in her skirts as she scrambled around to locate the source of the voice. Standing a foot from her and looking down at her with an inscrutable expression and a cylindrical object cradled in his arms was Leon’s opponent from the first round of the tournament—Alan, from the Kalos region. “How—why—what are you doing here?”

Instead of answering her question (though Iris supposed she hadn’t answered his), Alan took a seat opposite her, sitting criss-cross-applesauce with the cylinder held in his lap. He was quiet for a moment, looking down at whatever it was he was holding, before he lifted his eyes to meet hers. “Your battle was incredible. The bond you have with Haxorus is amazing.”

So that was it. He felt bad for her. He wanted to make her feel better. She didn’t know why—they had barely said two words directly to each other in the green room—but Champions didn’t spurn praise even when it came with a reminder of their dreams being crushed on international television. She pressed her lips together so he wouldn’t see them tremble, blinked to stop her tears from falling, and forced a smile. “Thank you. Your battle with Leon was great, too.”

Something of a smile flickered across his face, and he laughed softly. “It didn’t go the way we wanted it to, but that’s all right. It gives Lizardon and I something to work toward. We’ll make it back here someday.”

It was the same kind of PR-speak that Drayden had taught her when she won her title from Alder. Be gracious, be humble, remember that you carry the pride of the region on your shoulders. But Alan wasn’t Kalos’ regional Champion—Diantha was—and they were sitting alone, besides. He didn’t have a reason to put a front up for her . . . so maybe he was just like that.

“But the reason I came out here,” Alan continued after a beat, “is because I wanted to give this to you.”

“What is . . .” Iris’ voice caught in her throat as Alan set the cylinder between them on the grass, her eyes widened as the sunlight finally hit the glass just right. “Is that a pokémon egg?”

It was, and she didn’t need Alan’s nod to confirm it. She hadn’t paid it enough mind before, given that Alan had just about startled her out of her own skin when he approached her, and so her attention was caught between trying to stop her crying and figuring out just what he was doing out there. But now that the cylinder was sat between them, she saw it for what it really was: an incubator, with a pokémon egg nestled inside. The egg was light blue in color with grey and yellow spots, and sat on a dark blue cushion.

“I had Professor Sycamore send it to me after your match,” Alan said. “A friend of mine gave it to me just before the tournament to help my research. But I think you should be the one to hatch and train it.”

Iris blinked, and tore her eyes away from the egg to look back at Alan. “What? But—why? If your friend gave it to you—and you don’t even know me.”

Once again, Alan’s lips quirked upward in a little smile. “Not personally, no. But I saw your battle, and the bond you have with your pokémon. You have a real connection with them. You battled with them, so I know you would raise and train this one with the care it needs. And I’m also sure that . . .” Alan fished something from the travel bag slung around his waist. “. . . you will be able to use these.”

“What—” Once again, Iris’ jaw fell slack as she beheld the two shining stones in Alan’s open palm, one sparkling with rainbow hues and the other white with a red and blue double helix in the middle. “A Key Stone?”

“And Salamencite.”

“So then—this egg is—”

“A bagon, from the Draconid clan in Hoenn.”

Iris felt as if someone had used Twister on her brain. She shook her head to clear it, and once more looked up to meet Alan’s eyes, scrunching her dress in her fists.

“But why?” she asked again, and as he opened his mouth quickly said, “I—It’s not that I’m not thankful for the offer, but I don’t understand—we don’t even know each other, and this is all so . . . it’s so much.”

Alan lowered his hands back to his lap, and rolled the stones between his fingers. He studied them for a moment, quiet, before he finally gave his answer.

“I’ve been studying mega evolution for years now, both in theory and in practice. There is still so much about it that we don’t understand—so much that has been lost to time, but so much to still discover, too. But one thing I’ve learned, that many still don’t understand, is that mega evolution is not about power. It is powerful, yes—but it’s only as strong as the bond between the trainer and their partner pokémon. The stones facilitate the transformation, but they don’t cause it, not really. The trust and belief in each other that the human and pokémon share—when their hearts and souls are one, that’s when true evolution becomes possible. That’s when they are able to surpass their limits. It’s not about power. It never has been. It’s about trust, and love.” Alan looked up, and met her gaze. “And that’s what I saw between you and your pokémon today.”

Iris was sure that the city of Wyndon was still noisy. She was sure that there were still car engines roaring and horns honking, and music blaring from the speakers to keep the audience in the stadium entertained before the next battle started. But for a brief moment, she couldn’t hear any of it. All she could hear was the wind breathing through the leaves above their heads, and her own heart thrumming in her chest.

“So,” Alan said, and he once again extended his hand toward her, Key Stone and Salamencite glittering in his palm, “will you accept the Key Stone and Salamencite?”

Iris reached out, her fingers brushing against the stones in his open palm, but stopped herself just short of taking them. “You’re sure? You’re really sure?”

Alan nodded. “Positive.”

A smile, unbidden and free for the first time since she had left the arena, broke across Iris’ face, and when she nodded, Alan met her grin with one of his own. She cupped her hands and he tipped the jewels into them; they felt as smooth and cool as stones from a riverbed.

“Thank you,” Iris said, and she slipped the stones into a hidden pocket on her dress. “I’ll treasure them, I promise.”

“I don’t doubt it,” Alan said. “But, if it’s not too much to ask . . .”

Iris raised her eyebrows. “What is it?”

Alan nodded toward the bagon egg. “When this little one is all grown up, and you’ve mastered mega evolution . . . would you have a battle with me?”

Iris beamed, and pulled the egg’s incubator onto her lap. “Of course! Definitely! I can’t wait!”

Alan grinned. “Neither can I.”

ive been anxiety avoiding a task for So Long and djslaskjlf;asjfdasf. if i fuck it up like it's the only lead i have for a job rn so who knows how many months itll be before i get another shot. so im so scared of it i keep putting it off but that's making it Worse bc i keep wasting my very limited remaining adhd meds (i have Six Days Left that im going to be stretching for perhaps months). and oh my god i literally just need to DO IT but i keep blanking out for actual days at a time

First, thank you for the ask! And I’m so glad you’ve been enjoying my fics!! 😊 I’m on vacation this week and finally writing again (had a bit of a rough writer’s block patch). So hopefully I’ll be posting more content in the next couple of weeks.

Fic recs - boy do I ever. I will say, I have super varied tastes in fics, I’ll read just about anything Gen that’s Jason-centric, plus a few Jason ships (although I’m pretty picky about what actually makes it into my bookmarks). Lair of Mystery

The House of Mystery is Danny's lair or vacation lair(1) and ever since he outlived his friends and family(2), he's been coming to the House of Mystery whenever he needs a break from his kingly duties. Since it's the Infinite Realms, the HoM exists in every universe, but due to it not always being in the form of a literal house and difficult for outsiders to enter, it's never found. At least until now.

One day when he goes to the lair after (insert amount of time) he finds that the Justice League Dark have set up in his home. Initially, the JLD attack him but Danny puts a stop to that fast. It's his house, he can control anything inside it which includes anyone he deems an intruder. An interrogation more or less takes place, both parties are confused by the others presence, both sides get answers and are shocked by them. Danny because the JLD are a subdivision of a superhero agency that specializes in magic/the occult and the JLD because they've literally been using the house of a very powerful monarch without even knowing it.

Danny isn't angry the JLD are inside his house once he gets over the surprise. In fact, he's rather happy to have company of the non-ghost variety and is curious about their world full of superheroes and aliens. He comes to a decision. He will let the JLD continue to use his house as a base of operations if they are willing to agree to a few terms.

1. No one is to touch or use any artifacts they may find inside the HoM without his explicit permission. Some things are too dangerous for human hands to hold.

2. They seek him out of there is anything of the dead/occult variety threatening their world that they are unable to handle by themselves. (The JLD are shocked to learn of the King's past as a young hero as his explanation for this term. He misses those times and helping the JLD will also be another way to fulfill his obsession besides him being King.)

3. They spend time with him. Being the ruler of an infinitely expanding dimension gets pretty overwhelming and lonely at times. Even he needs a break. On top of missing his hero days, he misses the simpler times of being just a regular guy.

The JLD easily agree to his terms. From then on, they peacefully coexist in the HoM for many years to come. Danny is happier than he's been in a long time and so are the JLD because he's a wonderful host and has actually helped them with a few of their personal issues. Danny, having seen straight through his Captain Marvel form, gave Billy a fully furnished bedroom fit for a growing teenager and hidden from the others in the house. Danny and Billy hang out and play video games whenever they need to unwind with someone their age(3) with no secrets between them.

Danny helps Constantine with his soul contracts, seeing how they are fraying his soul and aging him prematurely. They have an easy camaraderie and sometimes share a bottle of whiskey together(4). Etc.

All is good.

Until some world ending threat of the dead/occult variety really does happen and the JLD call for Danny's help. He goes to them in full regalia with chainmail, breastplate with his hero symbol emblazoned on it, billowing, fur-collared purple cape with the cosmos displayed on the interior, a black crown incased in ice above his head with a sword of ghost ice in the hand that wears the newly dubbed Ring of (Peace?)(5). He doesn't even have to do anything. His presence alone is enough to intimidate the world ending threat into complete submission and is easily sent back into the Infinite Realms to face judgement for attacking the Living Realm.

This is how he's introduced to the rest of the Justice League. It's your choice on how they react and what happens beyond this point if you decide to take it further.

Notes:

(1) Your choice if it's his original lair or a vacation one depending on if you count Pariah's old castle as Danny's lair or not.

(2) Your choice if any of his friends or family members turn into ghosts.

(3) Danny is able to change the age of his form to an extent, an ability he inherited from his mentor, Clockwork. He uses it when he feels it would make it easier for other people to relate to him. He also has an eldritch form that he doesn't like to use in front of others unless he absolutely has to. You can leave any part of this detail out if you want to. I just thought it would be kinda cool and also a more subtle way of showing how powerful he is now.

(4) He is technically an adult (read several hundred years old) so he can partake if he wants to. Refer to note above this one.

(5) Should the function and name of the Ring of Rage change due to Danny being King or not? Your choice!

(*) Also, I read the House of Mystery is in a place called the Dreaming, a realm ruled by Morpheus the god of sleep and dreams. If this is truly the case, would it be plausible to say that Nocturne is just another one of Morpheus' forms? Would that mean the House of Mystery is in Nocturne's territory? If so, are Danny and Nocturne friends now? 👀

Hope it's okay to ask here, I love your blog and how you give clear, concise answers to questions without assuming bad faith so hopefully it's ok to throw my own "warning tag" question in here, TIA for the answer! So, childhood friends-to-lovers is like one of my favourite romance tropes to write in fanfic. I've done a LOT of ships with that, but I've never actually written anything more uh...spicy, shall we say. Until after the ship were both adults. I was raised Extremely Fundie and wasn't very sex positive for a LONG time as a result but now that I'm older & out of that environment I've grown a lot. So because of religious upbringing I just avoided writing smut before both characters were 18 "to be safe". In a recent new fandom I'm in I have a character who I feel like very much WOULD have explored her sexuality before she turned 18. The partner in this context is her childhood friend so they grew up together and are probably at most like 3 years apart, if that. So my question is, would I tag that as Underage because, even tho they're close together in age (ie. both "minors" in that sense) they ARE Underage or is the Underage tag on AO3 solely for Adult/Minor ships? (not judging writers of Adult/Minor pairings either, I'll add. It's just not my scene and I don't want to give people the wrong impression in the tags, either way around, whenever I inevitably write & post their First Time fic, yk?) -�� (hope its okay to tag this so I can maybe find it later? I don't wanna ask this off anon in case I get blasted by That(tm) side of fandom at large who might see my username and then come into my DMs/inbox to scream "P*do!!" at me, but I DO wanna be able to see the answer when it comes up, esp if I am not on tumblr the day that it does haha)

Ah. You're still thinking about that tag in a more cultural sense, but that's not what it's for. If you dig through the FAQs and such, the explanation is in there somewhere, but to summarize, it refers to:

On page depictions of sexual activity including at least one character under 18.

(So if they just kiss or you just say she had sex but you don't show intercourse, oral, etc. on the actual page, it doesn't count.)

AO3's underage tag is actually to protect users who live in jurisdictions where <18 sexytimes are banned from art or banned unless there's ~artistic merit~ or whatever. Around the time AO3 was starting up was when Australia was having a big upheaval over such things, so it was on people's minds in the Anglosphere.

Whether the sex is problematique or age gap or whatever doesn't matter. The actual age of consent or laws around sex in the real world location these characters are in, if any, does not matter. Your 17-year-old UK characters fucking still need the warning or CNTW even though that's laughable in context. 18 tends to be the age most used in international law for... like... porn star ages and such, so 18 is what AO3 went with. Never mind that it's not necessarily the age of majority or that age of consent laws can depend on partner age, etc. etc.

Unlike noncon/graphic violence/character death, this warning isn't there primarily because readers find the topic squicky.

It's a legal ass-covering thing.

READ WHEN THE ANGELS LEFT THE OLD COUNTRY BY SACHA LAMB

i just finished reading it for the third time and it came out in: october 2022

it's written in the tone of a classic yiddish folktale in a way that's really refreshing and fun, especially if you're used to reading books that don't have a ton going on stylistically - it's technically YA, but definitely doing something different from most other YA in terms of sheer style while remaining a very fun coming of age story for both the human and angelic characters. on a craft level it's excellent!

all the characters are super fun and interesting and well imagined - there's a pretty small core group with a larger ensemble cast, and all of the core characters are REALLY well developed - and even the minor ensemble cast each get moments of narrative insight into their lives and emotional landscapes in a really fun way. AS u May Know i am constantly writing fanned fictioneds but i actually don't really feel the need to write any for angels even tho i love it so much, simply bc i mostly just don't have anything to add!

my commentary earlier re: angels containing textual homophobia & antisemitism refers to those as intentional threats in the story, NOT like . "ohh angels is homophobic" JUST TO CLARIFY LOL!!!! it is a deeply queer and jewish book and those elements are there on purpose as part of the story being told

to try to elaborate while not totally spoiling, EYE personally really love the way in which the homophobia is present in the story - i DON'T generally want to read characters being called slurs or being violently assaulted - but i Also don't particularly like or appreciate books where homophobia just like magically isn't part of the world, esp with books like angels where it's set essentially in our universe... like, the idea of someone trying to write abt queer characters navigating the pale of settlement and ellis island and early 20th c nyc Without feeling the threat of homophobia in addition to the antisemitism and ableism and racism that are intrinsic features of those settings... would be repugnant lol

like, there's really only a couple moments where "the idea of homophobia" is specifically invoked, but its reality is BAKED into the ways the characters interact with the world and each other in a really realistic and subtle way. i think lamb does a really good job of like... making it clear what the characters have words for and what they don't. they all know exactly what antisemitism is and how it looks and functions, bc a core part of jewish tradition and celebration is literally just talking about all th times gentiles have tried to destroy jewish people. but the characters DON'T really have words and structures for how they're affected by ableism and homophobia or even really straight up misogyny - the reader is expected to do that work of identification themself in a way i really love

anyway. to anon and to anyone else who has been thinking abt reading when the angels left the old country: you should read when the angels left the old country 🫡

of COURSE I read the locked tomb because i heard taz had written a book. of course. ill consume most any media made by a beloved homestuck bnf. thats also why i played undertale. and read like..snotgirl. and idk... watched the new dub of neon genesis evangelion.

sdlkfhsg its funny you sensed that because that drawing did in fact start kinda more........ well, I'd be lying if I said my hands never wrought a drawing toeing over the pg-13 line LOL...

NOT to say i have a secret stash of porn or anything. in general im more interested in the implication of sexuality or mature themes over any explicit depiction. like everything i draw is so softcore itd almost feel silly to make a nsfw acc for anything.

but im not rly jumping to post anything on main either bc i get the sense i have a lot of kids in my social media following. it varies from site to site and fandom to fandom but the themes in my work often circle around childhood, coming of age etc and in general i like stories about kids so the fandoms i draw for have a lot of kids in them. even stuff like IT (stephen king) which is about kids but isn't necessarily for kids.. there were a lot of kids in that fandom lol.

actually thats why ive been censoring swears in comics lately because the tmnt fandom comes across to me as a little young...IDK I've had MULTIPLE people ask me what "sodomize" means because of the joke in this post and I'm like... I Cannot be the one to explain this to you. you have to look it up on your own klfsdhsdg like i wouldn't be doing this if i were doing a comic for mgs or even homestuck wherein the characters textually swear constantly LOL but sometimes u gotta change tacks depending on the faces u see in the crowd yknow.

i HAVE been thinking abt drawing nsfw of sunspot/richard rider/kobak from x-men red just because that comic seemed to be really asking for it. who knows.. if the need rly arises maybe my separate account policy will change.

its rly more a matter of the fact that i havent read/watched much of any other iterations... im sure id like most lol. I like most things related to my interests regardless of quality. i rly like the marvel ultimate alliance games for instance. sometimes seeing my fave guy is enough he doesnt have to be well written LOL. i dont exactly have a wealth of free time tho thats the real impediment.

i did watch the 2007 movie on new years eve and found it quite charming overall. and i have read about 30-40 issues between the mirage and idw comics. still feels like im barely scratching the surface but i liked em. i rly want to read all the sophie campbell stuff bc i think her work is interesting. jason aaron will be a mixed bag i think lmao. i say as the worlds biggest Wolverine and the X-Men (2011) fan.

hmm this is kinda hard bc i feel like i naturally draw very loose and the hard part for me is tightening it up. maybe some suggestions tho...

1) hand excercises. i think its easy to forget this when many artists sit in front of the computer all day but drawing is a physical activity u do with ur actual...bodys...muscles lol. if u feel urself tightening up it might help to strech (any google search for "artist hand excercises" should yield good results) or do a page of loose practice strokes like..big circles. long lines. scribbles. that kinda thing. whatever feels good for ur hand. this is also just good to do as a general warm up before u sit down for any drawing sesh.

2) draw further away from the canvas. as a general rule...when ur painting traditionally you do the big strokes with your whole arm outstreched and a long handled brush. and when you do the details its smaller wrist movements and a shorter handled brush. so it might help to take a step back or push back from ur chair a little.. or hold ur tablet a little further away. and hold your pen further away from the nib.

3) change mediums / brush types. some brushes and mediums are more suited to loose sketching and some more inclined towards detail work. so changing ur tool could help. also! i personally have this problem where sometimes if im using a brush i feel really familiar with the pressure to make a "good" "finished" "perfect" drawing is greater... if i want to force myself to loosen up ill switch to a tool i dont use as often so it feels like the pressure is off. a lot of times for me this is switching from digital to traditional. but sometimes its switching from a small pen to a big marker. or a smooth pen to a textured one. or a nice brush to a shitty dried up marker.

but also every body is different so i dont think these tips will work for everyone. u should listen to what ur body and mind tell u and how drawing feels to you

bro just sign up and set it up i dont think theres much to it... i dont rly think too much abt my itch.io store because its digital goods so u just upload the file and let it do its thing. no distribution work needed on ur part. youll notice i barely even advertise my itch unless i have smth new on there lol.. its easy. but good luck!!!

well. scott mcclouds understanding comics and making comics are good books on the craft. i think i had to buy them for a class in art school once.

other than that idk just keep at it. comics are really laborious i think for a lot of people the hardest part is sitting down and doing it.

i think a lot of people have a very instinctive understanding of how to read comics and what they look like so whatever you think seems like good way to tell the story you have in mind, its probably right. if u get stuck, study comics that have done something similar. most people in comics are relatively self taught and actually it can be problematic bc you can tell when a lot of comic artists are all copying the same like 5 old white guys LMAO. but on the flip side if you make sure to reference and study broadly your comics will almost assuredly feel unique.

sorry im responding to this anyways. this is just a really nice ask. i like when people reference my older work bc i feel like sometimes theyre subtly implying it wasnt very good LMAOOO. but its true! at least compared to the work i make now ^^ and the fact that im still making art is whats keeping me from being embarassed abt how much of my old art just floats around online lmao im never ashamed to be growing and learning. isnt that a nice thought <3

🏩Personal opinions/reviews on Composite, Synastry and Natal charts aspects/placements I’ve experienced and observed 🏩

[DISCLAIMER: everything I’ve written comes from personal experience and observation. It may not resonate with you and it’s totally fine! tysm and stay safe!]

🫀-Pisces stellium in a composite chart (Sun,Mercury,Venus,Moon) sacrificing relationship, we were always willing to do anything for each other. Strong strong spiritual connection, we were extremely in tune with each other feelings, so much that it became difficult to deal with our own. One downside of this stellium tho, was that a lot of lies were told, not to hurt one another but to prevent the other person from getting hurt. Karmic. Pisces rules the 12th house, and this house other than spirituality also represents karma and past lives, so we had a karmic past life connection. Unconditional love, no matter what I could’ve never and still can resent this person.

🫀-Saturn in the 1st house/conjunct the Asc in a Synastry chart. Better than what I expected actually, I always heard negative reviews on this placement but honestly, it is one of my favourites. The Saturn person is a guide in the Ascendant person’s life. Of course it is important to see how the Saturn person acts in this Saturnian energy. If they’re cold, restricting and controlling the experience is going to be a difficult/bad one for the ascendant person, but if the Saturn person can use this energy for good, than it’s going to be amazing. The Ascendant person learns a lot and grows with the Saturn person. Saturn is a stabilising/safe point for the Ascendant. In this case I was the Saturn person and a male friend of mine was the Ascendant. His rising sign it’s Cancer and both my and his Saturn are in Cancer. My Saturn is conjunct his Ascendant. Unfortunately his mom died at a young age (As I said he has Saturn (restrictions,obstacles) in Cancer (the mother) so Saturn brought him a restriction with his mother=death) after 8 months of his mother’s death he met me. We became close friends super fast and he told me once that I’m like a mother. Because he always reached for my help whenever he felt lost and lonely, like a child does with their mom.

🫀-Vertex conjunct Chiron in Synastry. Fated to meet to heal. Sometimes this aspect can cause pain as well, as Chiron is our wound, but from what I’ve experienced and seen, this aspect is mainly in Synastry charts of people who are meant to meet and heal each other.

🫀- Virgo risings usually tend to get idolised a lot from the people around them. This is because they tend to have this perfect reputation even without trying. (Mercury energy) Plus Pisces is in their 7th house and this sign tends to idolise people a lot. So other people (7th house) in Pisces will make them get idoalised a lot.

🫀-Taurus in the 4th house. Could have a lot of candles in their rooms, might have a music instrument in the living room/house, could own luxurious things in their house, might have a “personal bank” of their own. Money might be inside the wardrobe/hidden behind the clothes. The wardrobe could smell very nice, could have lots of food in the room or snacks or even left overs of the food. Might be lazy when it comes to cleaning the house, always decorate their houses artistically (paintings, flowers, posters, drawings, music…etc..) could be possessive of their house, things inside the house.

while everyone likes to crap on leo/rai (for good reason) and on apritello for being cringe ig

i feel like one thing every 2012 ship has a problem with is pacing

yes i mean every ship

it’s clear that the 2012 writers don’t rlly know how to commit to romantic subplots so they either go the “they are super into each other right off the bat so there’s little build up” angle or the “will they won’t they,, but we’ll never show them actually get together” angle

i’m not saying these are atrociously bad or anything but it can be really annoying in the long run

apritello is the entire reason i got into 2012 when i was 11 lmao so it got stale for me when the show focuses less and less on their development since they didn’t want to commit to an actual subplot after the bigfoot fiasco. they both grow, sure, but it’s pushed to the background and we never see them talk about it. instead we get a kiss in a non-canon music video ://

dw apritello i still love you

with ramona, while it’s incredibly sweet how in love they are, the pacing of their first episode was ,,,, bad lol. the first time i watched it i was so underwhelmed i was like,,, this gets better?? right?? and it did but yeah i think that first episode for sure needed tweaking.

and more mona would’ve been great too. she needed some character exploration outside of her relationship with raph,, like having her talk more with the other characters her age (i would kill for april and mona content). i’m not saying she doesn’t have depth. she does. but a lot of it gets pushed to the background for her dynamic with raph.

they just didn’t even try with mikey and renet i’ll be real. they threw renet in there as a love interest and then kept making her and mikey kinda go in circles with their interest in each other. they’ll be cute and close in some scenes and then renet will act like she’s just humoring him while mikey kinda forgets about her when shini shows up.

i think renetangelo is cute to some extent (tho i do dislike 2012 mikey a bit so that doesn’t help) but time travel romances are automatically rlly hard to write well and since 2012’s romance writing is already messy, they weren’t going to do well. and renet herself is automatically more interesting when she’s not interacting with mikey. like her platonic dynamic with leo?? adorable. my favorite renet is 2003 and she’s not a love interest and she’s so charming!! renet is just a fun quirky friend of the turtles.

y’all know i love a lot of tmnt love interests so the fact that i prefer renet as a friend prolly says a lot about how she should be written gjdkdk

i don’t wanna talk about leo/rai much, but other than the glaringly bad i/ncest issue (both siblings and cousins), they just weren’t very good as a romantic dynamic either?

like yeah i’m biased bc lotus is the only leo love interest i will ever accept (and also leo/rai is gross lol)

but like ,,, with karai, leo saw her as an escape from being a leader so he can explore his rebellious streak. which is interesting! but unlike with lotus, leo was willing to betray her behind her back, and karai was willing to manipulate him to do what she wanted him to. but okay that’s getting off topic. back to the pacing,,

season 1 gets a pass for me since i actually love the pacing of season 1 alone (like honestly, after the cousin reveal, there wasn’t any romance up until season 2 from my memory,, and even before that after karai betrayed leo and the other brothers found out, leo wasn’t into her,, it was his brothers who were making fun of him), but afterwards, season 2 onward,the timing of leo/rai moments were always a slap in the face bc they were always. ALWAYS. right after they acknowledged her as family THRJEKSJDJDKSK

but yeah i think pacing is the worst problem of 2012 ships :p

obviously some other problems too, like sexism lol. but pacing is most glaring for me

It would just be severely easier if his friends weren’t so nosy,,,

Taiju and Yuzuriha pick up on what’s really happening really fast, tho. Okay, Yuzuriha picks up on what’s happening really fast and then points it out to Taiju, but NEWAYS

They both help him out with it (as much as they can understand) and that’s probably the only reason he’s managed to keep making the gift under your nose

Come time for the day, he’s going to play extremely coy about it. Like, anyone asking him about it with be met with the responses of: “Oh, it is? I had no clue. Whoops,” and “That’s today?”

Deep down, he’s really worried about you liking his present and is trying to keep his confidence about handing it over before the day’s over

He’s so coy about it that you’re starting to worry that he actually did forget your birthday and maybe the sticky notes with your birthday everywhere weren’t actually a reminder for your birthday-

That is, until he finally manages to get you alone some later (Thank you, Taiju and Yuzuriha)

After a bit of talking and playful banter, he’s nonchalantly handing the present over, which is his scientific rendition of something you’ve been going on about wanting for ages

He’s definitely using you expecting nothing to his advantage. Of course you’re not going to expect much, you’re in the midst of a race against time to return humanity to what it once was. Who has the time to celebrate-

He was relatively fine planning something for you on his own, but the others catch wind of it being your special day after a passing comment on it from Yuzuriha to you about your birthday and the gang is definitely hounding him about doing something, anything, for your special day

Something, something “courting ritual” in the words of Kohaku and Chrome

His small, sentimental gift is then turned into planning a small party by the friend committee

He’s outwardly complaining about it, but everyone knows that he’s more onboard than he’d like to admit with how take charge he’s been about it. No one is missing how excited you are, Senku, they know what you are-

Unfortunately, your friends are terrible at making sure they don’t seem suspicious when planning your surprise party, practically leaving you alone a little too often for you to feel like there’s gotta be something going on

This gives Senku even less time to work on his little, sentimental gift, since he’s picking up the slack of keeping you distracted while also leading the charge of the party and doing Village Chief Tings

He’s very much appreciating the time alone he gets with you, though. It’s so rare nowadays for it to just be the two of you and he’s happily soaking it in

But, as Senku’s horrible luck would have it, he has to miss out on the first half of the party so he can actually finish his little gift for you and he more than struggles to find you throughout the second half

Just when he’s on the verge of giving up to find you, a certain mentalist manages to get him away from the party goers and sends him out further to a clearing where you’re anxiously waiting for him

“Senku! I was starting to think you wouldn’t come…” “How could I miss it? The festivities can be heard all the way to the other settlement,”

He attempts to pretend he didn’t know about the party, but some of the specifics are a little too on the nose for you to believe he had no say in most of it

“Isn’t it funny I just so happened to finish making you something on your supposed birthday?” That’s very funny, indeed, Senku

Tells you to close your eyes while he puts it on you. Yes, he knows how cliche and cheesy it is, but just do it so you can judge it after he puts it on you-

And lookie, lookie, it’s a near identical version of a chemistry heart necklace you could’ve sworn you’d seen him with a few times before the petrification. How interesting,,,

He happily accepts the hug you give him, holding you close and hoping you pay the affection no mind

“Happy birthday, (Y/n)”

But you take notice and it makes your heart flutter as a fond smile makes its way to your lips
