"Because Richard (III) usurped the throne, his retinue is inevitably seen as inimical to the crown and therefore in an important sense independent of royal authority. In the context of Edward IV's reign, in which the retinue was created, neither assumption is true. The development of the retinue would have been impossible without royal backing and reflected, rather than negated, the king's authority. Within the north itself, Gloucester's connection subsumed that of the crown. Elsewhere, in East Anglia and in Wales, that focus for royal servants was provided by others, but Gloucester was still part of that royal connection, not remote from it. In the rest of England, as constable and admiral, he had contributed to the enforcement of royal authority. When he seized power in 1483 he did not do it from outside the prevailing political structure but from its heart."
-Rosemary Horrox, "Richard III: A Study of Service"
#r*chard iii#english history#my post#Richard was certainly very powerful in the north but to claim that he 'practically ruled' or was king in all but name is very misleading#his power/success/popularity were not detached from Edward IV's rule but a fundamental part/reflection/extension of Edward IV's rule#even more so that anyone else because he was Edward's own brother#there's also the 1475 clause to consider: Richard & Anne would hold their titles jointly and in descent only as long as George Neville#also had heirs. Otherwise Richard's title would revert to life interest. His power was certainly exceptional but his position wasn't as#absolute or indefinite as is often assumed. It WAS fundamentally tied to his brother's favor just like everyone else#and Richard was evidently aware of that (you could even argue that his actions in 1483 reflected his insecurity in that regard)#once again: when discussing Edward IV's reign & Richard III's subsequent usurpation it's really important to not fall prey to hindsight#for example: A.J Pollard's assumption that Edward IV had no choice but to helplessly give into his overbearing brothers' demands#and had to use all his strength to make Richard to heed to his command which fell apart after he died and Richard was unleashed#(which subsequently forms the basis of Pollard's criticism of Edward IV's reign & character along with his misinterpretation of the actions#of Edward IV's council & its main players after his death who were nowhere near as divided or hostile as Pollard assumes)#is laughably inaccurate. Edward IV was certainly indulgent and was more passive/encouraging where Richard (solely Richard) was concerned#but he was by no means unaware or insert. His backing was necessary to build up Richard's power and he was clearly involved & invested#evidenced by how he systematically depowered George of Clarence (which Clarence explicitly recognized) and empowered Richard#and in any case: to use Richard as an example to generalize assumptions of the power other magnates held during Edward IV's reign#- and to judge Edward's reign with that specific assumption in mind - is extremely misleading and objectively inaccurate#Richard's power was singular and exceptional and undoubtedly tied to the fact that he was Edward's own brother. It wasn't commonplace.#as Horrox says: apart from Richard the power enjoyed by noble associates under Edward IV was fairly analogous to the power enjoyed by#noble associates under Henry VII. and absolutely nobody claims that HE over-powered or was ruled by his nobles or subjects#the idea that Richard's usurpation was 'inevitable' and the direct result of Edward empowering him is laughable#contemporaries unanimously expected Edward V's peaceful succession. Why on earth would anyone - least of all Edward -#expect Richard to usurp his own nephew in a way that went far beyond the political norms of the time?#that was the key reason why the usurpation was possible at all#as David Horspool says: RICHARD was the 'overriding factor' of his own usurpation There's no need to minimize or outright deny his agency#as Charles Ross evidently did

Child! Shanks x Child! Reader ( x platonic! Edward Newgate)
Synopsis: "A confusing encounter with a red-haired child ends up changing his day completely."
Warnings: None

Today would definitely be your day! After weeks of trying to convince your brothers and especially your father, you had managed to get permission to take a tour all alone around the next island the ship stopped. It might seem silly, but living surrounded by men who saw danger in everything made your freedom being compared to one of a bird in a cage. Of course, you were more than grateful for all the effort they put into protecting you, but sometimes you just wanted to run around and play with other kids instead of being followed by famous pirates who scared anyone who came near.
That's why you couldn't hold back the anxiety of finally being able to live a little adventure completely alone! You've prepared very well, choosing fresh clothes that won't get in the way of playing or running, took a purse with a generous amount of money that you collected according to the days and choose the best and most resistant shoes! Everything was perfect, you couldn't even swallow your food during lunch. You were so busy, as soon as the meal was over, you said goodbye to everyone and ran towards the port, excited to explore the place.
Even if walking around and spending money on silly things wasn't exactly the most fun thing in the world, just being able to experience all those new things by yourself and maybe even make a few friends was enough to get you excited. There weren't many young people in Whitebeard's crew, you ended up being the only child and the youngest member which left you a bit alone. Of course no one refused to play with you, Marco and Thatch would spend hours distracting you if that made you happy, the point was that they were adults and eventually needed to take care of their responsibilities, leaving you alone.
Your plan was to buy some candy and maybe find some kids your age to play with, you couldn't wait to get some attention from people who would also like to play. You walked carefree through the big city market, there were countless merchants, mothers, workers, all walking around in their own worlds and duties. You'd eventually stop and look at the fruit, jewelry, or anything else that looked like fun, but you weren't focused on shopping. You were humming absently around, not really caring about your surroundings when you started to hear footsteps approaching.
When you turned around to try to figure out what was going on it was too late, a person collided directly with you but before he could knock you to the ground, he pulled you by the arm away from the main road. You were dragged into an alley and soon a hand covered your mouth, when you regained your senses you could hear more and more footsteps approaching, a crowd running! You frowned in confusion as you listened to what people were saying. "Are you sure you lost them?" You tried to peek down the alley and you could guess they were sailors by their blue and white outfit. "Shit, those little brats! I can't believe they robbed us…" they argued among themselves "Let's keep looking, they can't have gone far".
So when the men walked away you decided to pay attention to the situation you were in. You looked to see who your captors were and came across two… children? The boy holding you had blue hair and a huge red nose, he was holding your mouth while his face had a terrified expression. Next to him was a boy with red hair and a nice hat, he was carrying what looked like a bag of coins and he also looked extremely nervous about being chased. Whoever they were, you knew they'd robbed the sailors, but that didn't mean they weren't a risk to you.
When you were sure the sailors were gone you used all your strength to step on the boy's foot and then bite his hand. You might be small but you weren't harmless, growing up with powerful pirates had taught you a trick or two.
"Ouch! You bit me!" The boy screamed as he held his own hand.
The redhead finally seemed to notice that they'd dragged someone else into the mess and looked at you confused.
"You kidnapped me!" You countered by crossing your arms.
"You kidnapped them?!" The redhead exclaimed looking at his friend in shock.
"They were in the way!" The other tried to defend himself "And you bit me! I was about to let you go!" He was still angry but you didn't care.
"Think before you kidnap me! You're lucky I only bit you, if I told my brothers they would do a lot worse!" You exclaimed proudly of your family.
"Sure, like I'm going to believe a snotty brat" the blue haired one rolled his eyes.
"You called me what?!" You exclaimed with fury as your cheeks burned.
"Snotty brat" he said again with a smirk, looking satisfied with having turned the tables.
The problem was that the boy had underestimated you, one thing you definitely lacked was patience. You learned very early that you shouldn't tolerate offenses against yourself or your family, so you let anger win that fight. You quickly punched the blue-haired boy in the middle of the face, the one who fell on his butt with a scream.
"Buggy!" The red-haired friend screamed and went to help him.
"I'm not snotty!" You said stomping your foot on the floor.
The red-haired boy looked between you and the companion, his gaze showing shock and… fascination? He looked at you like you were a bedtime story hero, someone amazing and you couldn't understand. Shouldn't he be angry? You had just hit his colleague and he seemed fascinated by it?
"Wow…" he exclaimed looking you up and down.
"Humpf! Idiot" you said without patience and then you turned to leave the alley "You're lucky I won't tell my brothers, Marco would finish you off" you said and then left the place ignoring the red haired boy who kept calling you .
You were nervous and frustrated that visit to the city had not gone as you planned, so you decided to go back to the ship earlier. Luckily you would stay a few days in that place, there would be other opportunities to explore and meet kind and fun children, no more children who irritated you. It wasn't long after returning to shore that the crew set up a small camp to store the new supplies while the ship was refueled. There, you found Marco fiddling with some papers and further away you could see his father giving orders to some other members.
You sat with a sulky face while eating a candy you bought in town, Marco looked at you curiously and approached with a characteristic smile.
"What's wrong birdie-yoi?" He smiled and sat down next to you.
"I… I met some annoying kids" you decided it was better to omit what had happened, as much as you wanted revenge, you understood that the confusion had been a misunderstanding and you didn't want your siblings worrying about something so silly.
"Wasn't that fun?" He nodded when he saw you deny it. "Don't worry, you can still meet other kids in the next few days" he smiled trying to calm you down "And if nobody wants to play with you, let's get Visa and Jozu and have a tea party, how about that?" He offered, knowing you were always happiest spending time with your brothers.
"Promise?" You looked at him sullenly.
"On my honor" he smiled as he saw you clearly getting more excited about the idea.
After a little chat, Marco had to get back to work and you decided not to bother him anymore. So to distract yourself until dinner time you decided to walk along the nearby beach and look for some shells to collect, you were still thinking about the boys from before, especially the redhead. He was looking at you with so much emotion that you couldn't help but feel your stomach churning, no one had ever looked at you like that… It was so weird and it made you so confused, what was that? Some noises in the nearby forest caught your attention, being curious that you were, so it didn't take long to approach and look for who was there.
"It 's you!" You said in recognition of seeing the red hair from before.
"Shhhh!" He asked for silence and you covered your mouth, looking around for any threat "Are your brothers here?" he asked quietly.
"They're over there…" you pointed into the distance and he seemed to agree silently "What are you doing here?"
"I wanted to talk to you again" he admitted looking at the floor, his cheeks were slightly pink and you felt your body getting warm.
"Why?" You asked timidly.
"Because your punch was super cool!" His eyes sparkled "You hit Buggy right on!"
"Is he not your friend?" You asked confused.
"He is… But you were just defending yourself! He shouldn't have called you snotty… You're not snotty, you're too cute to be!" He confidently admitted.
"Do you think I'm cute?" Your cheeks were now on fire.
"I do…" he smiled shyly "I'm Shanks, what's your name?" He approached.
"(Y/n)" you smiled.
"Cool, I didn't know Whitebeard had someone in the crew with my age"
"How do you know I’m in the Whitebeard’s crew?”
"You said you had a brother named Marco, I know him! And my captain said Whitebeard was in town, so that had to be it," he said with pride in his little investigation.
"Your captain? Are you a pirate too?" You were curious now.
"Yes! I'm from the Roger Pirates!" he exclaimed with pride.
That's when your face became sad... You had heard about this crew countless times, all your life you grew up hearing that they were your father's main enemies and that you could not, under any circumstances, approach them.
"I shouldn't be talking to you!" You finally realized and tried to run, but Shanks was quick and grabbed you.
"Wait! Please! I don't want to hurt you!" He begged as he held her wrist gently but firmly.
"How can I trust you? You kidnapped me this morning! And we are sworn enemies!" You snorted.
"But I don't want to be your enemy…"
"You don't?" You let your emotions get the best of you.
"No… I… I want to be your boyfriend!" He declared with fire in his eyes.
"Boyfriend!?" You stuttered in shock, your face was hot and probably red, your eyes were wide in shock.
"Yes! You're super strong and cute!" He said without a care and then let go of your hand "Unless you didn't like me…"
"No! I did like you…!" You admitted with embarrassment "But… I never had a boyfriend… What do they do?"
"They… They" he stammered in embarrassment "They hold hands… Kiss on the cheek and go on dates!" He said with embarrassment.
"Oh!" You exclaimed with as much embarrassment as he was. You thought about holding Shanks hands and your stomach started to turn, it would also be really cool to be able to play with him.
"It's cool, isn't it? We can be sweethearts!" He tried to convince you.
"(Y/n)?! Where are you? It's getting dark and we should go back to the ship" You heard your father's voice approaching.
"Shanks?! Where are you?!" Another unknown voice came from the middle of the forest.
Before you could run away the fearsome encounter took place, behind you was your father and behind Shanks must have been the much talked about Roger, his captain. You both widened your eyes in terror when you realized what was happening, but you didn't dare open your mouth to try to explain.
"Roger"
"Newgate"
"Can you explain why your brat is talking to my child?" He quickly put a hand on your shoulder and pulled you back.
"Good question, what's up Shanks? Did you come here to talk to the old man?" The captain chuckled, he didn't seem to be mad at Shanks at all.
"I… Well…" the boy mumbled incoherently with embarrassment.
"Did he do something to you?" Your father asked, looking at you calmly, he didn't seem mad at you at all, which calmed you down a bit.
"No…" you mumbled shyly and grabbed his leg.
"Hm, maybe they just met and had a chat" Roger theorized "Or are they secretly flirting, huh Shanks? You naughty, came for the riskiest one" the man teased.
"Don't talk nonsense Roger, (y/n) can't date you, brat" His father said as if that was nonsense.
"I can't?" You asked with some sadness in your voice.
"They can’t?" It was Shanks's turn to look sadly at his captain.
The two men stared at each other in shock, they seemed to slowly understand what was going on between the two of you.
"Don't tell me… Did you like this piece of junk?" your father asked in shock and nervousness.
"Hey! No need to offend other people's children!" Roger defended "Shanks isn't that bad… He's just… He" the man shrugged.
"Like you understand" Edward rolled his eyes.
"Come on, we were young once!" Roger laughed "Let the kids date and have some fun, nothing bad will come of it"
"No" Edward gave the final verdict, but when he felt you pulling his pants and making your huge lost puppy eyes with tears threatening to fall he started to rethink the idea "(y/n)..."
"Please?" You asked "I promise I'll help more often in the kitchen if you let me..." you tried to bargain, you liked Shanks, you didn't want to be banned from dating him, even if you didn't know exactly what boyfriends did.
"Heavens… Who knew having kids would be like this…" He sighed tiredly "You guys can date" Shanks smiled "With some conditions!"
"Conditions? That's not fair!" He huffed angrily.
"Calm down little one, he's the father, he has the right to decide that, you have to earn trust and permission" Roger said quickly, Shanks seemed more resigned.
"First you need to grow up a bit, I can step on you now and I won't let such a small and young brat date my child!" he said quickly.
"Uhum!" The redhead's eyes sparkled.
"Second, you need to be strong! I will not tolerate a weakling having my child as a partner, you need to be able to face me without fear to have their hand"
"Yes! I'm going to be really strong!" He smiled looking at you and you looked away shyly.
"And finally, when you have those two things, the most important one" Shanks listened attentively "You need their acceptance" your father put his hand on your head "If you have both requirements and my child still loves you then I won't be the one going to stop you" he chuckled.
You smiled happily as you looked at Shanks who also looked confident.
"You'll see old man! I'm going to marry them!" He proclaimed with pride.
Roger just laughed praising his apprentice while your father looked frustrated and stroked your hair. You smiled thinking about how cool it would be to have Shanks as your boyfriend, you really didn't see the time to be able to be with him.

Happy Holidays!! Could you write something for Fullmetal Alchemist please? If not then whatever you would like to continue works! Thanks in advance and I look forward to reading all of the prompts!!
a continuation of 1 2
There is a sea of irritated blonde cadets glaring at the guard in front of the gates, who for some reason seems nervous about them, as if he hasn't had to deal with arrogant new recruits who haven't even broken in their boots before. Havoc gives them all another once over, but their age means they really can't be anything else.
"If you don't get let us past, I'm going to get you demoted," the tallest blonde there says viciously. All of them look so alike that he almost things that they're related, all blonde and blue eyed and irritated.
That's. Quite a threat from some newbie nobody. Except the guard still looks nervous and isn't telling them to fuck off.
"Russel, please," sighs another, who on second glance is the only one of them without blue eyes. He's never seen anyone who had gold eyes before. "Brother should be here soon and he can sort this out."
"Sort what out?" scoffs the lone woman among them. The silver studs all up her ears aren't at all regulation and she's going to want to take them off before her commanding officer yanks them out. "As if our uniform shouldn't be enough to identify us-"
"Because we've never duplicated a uniform before," a boy who looks to be on the younger end of the group mutters.
"Shut up Khayal," they all chorus, except for the golden eyed man who just sighs.
"You should just take the exam so you have a stupid watch of your own to flash around," the woman complains.
The man rolls his golden eyes. "Why, so I can have the same rank I have now and can be mobilized without Brother's permission? He'd kill me. And then whoever was stupid enough to let me take the test."
A watch - same rank - is this guy saying he's a major? That can't be right. He tried to get a clear looks at any of their jackets, but their clustered together and mostly facing away from him.
"I have them!"
They all turn to see a mousy brown haired woman with thick glasses running towards them.
She stumbles as she makes it over and the shortest one steadies her. She flashes him a smile, "Thanks Fletcher," before shoving a bunch of papers at the guard. "Here, here are the authorization papers, although copies really should have been sent ahead of us-"
"What are you guys doing? I though you were going to get a head start on setting up the office."
Havoc was so focused on watching the unfolding drama that he hasn't noticed anyone approaching. He does a double take, not sure what he's seeing at first.
He has gold hair and eyes and a similar enough face structure that he has to related to the other golden eyed man. His hair is up in a long golden ponytail and there's a silver watch at his hip.
Havoc has a clear view of his jacket.
This kid is a colonel.
That means he can only be one person.
"I don't want to hear it, Ed," the woman says irritably. "Show the nice man your watch so we can actually get started. The first thing I'm going to do is call Central and tell them how much they fucked up."
"Nag, nag, nag Winry. If any of you bothered to carry identification, this wouldn't happen," Colonel Edward Elric, the Fullmetal Alchemist says, but dutifully takes the silver state alchemist's watch out of his pocket. The guard seems more relieved than any of them to wave them through.
"I said that I didn't want to hear it, Edward," Winry says sweetly in a way that has Russel and Fletcher hanging back several steps and Khayal grinning.
The sound of their bickering take a while to fade, which he thinks says more about their volume than their speed.
It turns our their new neighbors might not be as boring as they first thought.

Twilight Agere Headcanons #3: Jasper Hale
Jasper is a flip: he didn't regress before he met the Cullens, but they introduced it to him as a coping mechanism and he fell into the family dynamic very easily
he takes care of Alice one-on-one sometimes
Jasper falls more on the caregiver side of the spectrum and only regresses when the Cullen kids are sharing family time
regresses to a baby-age and doesn't like to make any decisions when he's small: mostly just wants cuddles. Esme is the most likely to sit with him, but Edward sometimes takes care of him when Edward is feeling older
likes to be warm when he's small: hot baths, being wrapped in blankets, footie pyjamas: he can get fussy or snap out of regression entirely if he gets too cold
grew up as the eldest brother of the family, used to taking care of the younger siblings, and that informs his identity as a caregiver
probably the best cook in the Cullen family
likes to swing Alice around and make her laugh when she's regressing: he's so connected to her that it's easy to take care of her when she's small
he and Alice are dreaming of a baby of their own, a new person to add to the coven: even though he and Alice are older than Rosalie and Emmett, they're treated like the babies of the family because they joined the Cullens later
Jasper wants to get a better grasp on his thirst before bringing anyone else into the family, but he likes the idea of another baby sibling
the first to notice when people around him are regressing, whether that's a member of the family or a stranger: sometimes lends quiet aid through his gift, calming anxieties and bolstering courage
yes I reused the moodboard from my own earlier work :P

I'm rewatching Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood cause it's been literally a decade since I've watched it.
So cheers, I have a reaction thread (because I'm a sentimental bitch)
Tumblr media
Episode 1:
God, I've forgotten how it immediately just got to the action in the first episode. Like, it set up everything and gave a glimpse of nearly all important character.
Tumblr media
Poor Isaac, was probably manipulated, but ultimately led himself to his own demise. Very bold though.
And god, I think I was too depressed at the time of watching it, but the Eldric brother's backstory was so painful with that small glimpse.
Tumblr media
Episode 2:
I cannot for the life of me understand why this shit didn't affect me as much as it should've as a kid. It might've depression that numbed my emotions, but I guess we'll never know.
Anyway, my point is, this is is traumatizing, and that's me saying this as an adult. The backstory and the short glimpses of the mom, as well as the clear love and dedication they had for her? The way that Ed didn't even hesitate to try and find more truth? The way he dragged himself, bleeding leg and all, to the armor to shove it down, and connect his brothers soul to it???
Tumblr media
And god, the way I just kept whisper-shouting when they came to recruit him, cause I didn't remember shit, going-
Tumblr media
But man, as someone is is now so much older than Ed is in the anime, they make him act a kid. A very smart, powerful and purposeful kid, but a kid nonetheless. He's so young and you can just feel it in the little things he does. He does not have his shit together and is still figuring some shit out.
Tumblr media
Episode 3:
I love the comedy this anime has. It has the funny little pauses and the interuption of what should be serious moments without ruining the actual serious moments.
It is exactly my cup of tea, with a silly joke that just poked fun at a kid or being, well. A kid. He's small, and that joke may remind He's small but I can also remind you that he is so much younger than his peers.
Tumblr media
I am an atheist so I do have the same kinda mindset about God that Edward has. Rose has this sort of annoying mindset of God and his priests being this answer to all suffering and anyone who disagrees will suffer divine Punishment. It is frustrating at the start.
But I can fully understand where she's coming from by the end. She clung onto this hope, this prayer that someone she loved so much will eventually be revived. Rose then meets the brothers who lost someone they loved, and tried to being back as well. She saw the consequences and felt terrified. But she spent so long just clinging onto this hope that she desperately wants it to be true. So she argues, trying to convince herself that Cornella was telling the truth and she didn't waste so long praying for something that didn't exist.
People can find comfort in the idea of God(s). The idea that there is someone looking after everyone and offering guidance is reassuring for some.
That was not Rose's situation.
Rose's situation is more akin to having a loved one suffering from a terminal disease and convincing yourself that prayers and God will be able to do what science could not. You can not pray for the impossible. You can pray for hope, for guidance or for even a fast recovery. But you need to understand that even if you wish for something impossible, you cannot spend your life wasting away on these prayers and refuse to do anything else.
Rose needed to stop clinging in general because she was clinging on to something impossible that compelled her to try and attempt awful things. She needed to learn to stand on her own. Maybe she could one day find hope in God again, but it wouldn't be anytime soon.
Man, I went on a rant there.
Tumblr media
Anyway, I just wanted to type all that put because my mind just felt like analysing for a bit.
I forgot what the philosopher stone even did until now. I remembered that it was powerful but I that was about it. Now I remember, it was shit about defying the rule of absolute equivalence.
I am kinda happy I forgot majority of the lore of this anime, it makes it fun to put all the pieces together again as an adult who can process things and analyse better.
Tumblr media
Episode 4:
This hurts.
This hurts so much. They were so happy, and acting like actual kids. They played all sorts of games with Nina and Alexander. It was so bright. They were so bright.
But Tucker, the motherfucker, only saw what he was bound to lose instead of what he had. He tried to work his way through it, but eventually just gave up.
My heart sank when I heard him ask Nina to play the next day. It broke even more when heard Nina say, in that voice that doesn't belong to a kid, "onii-chan".
Tumblr media
He sacrificed everything just to save his title pf State Alchemist. He gave up his wife and then his daughter and the respect of these kids.
God, I hate him. I understand him and his desperation and I hate him.
Scar is back though. We love scar man. He's weird but core to the story and has every right to hate State Alchemists.
Tumblr media
Again, when I was a kid, I didn't feel much. This episode never hit me as hard as it does now. Back then, I though the Eldric brothers were being dramatic about the whole thing.
Now it just strikes me so hard how fucked up it wad to be willing to experiment on your own kid for a stupid title. To mutate her into an existence that was nothing like her human one.
Brotherhood didn't make it blatantly, but it was mentioned time and again, just how painful it was to be a chimera in the original. Nina was in pain and Tucker knew this.
I fully understand why this hurt the Eldric brothers so much now. That was horrid. And to be able to even see a semblance of yourself in that was painful.

The Engines as Mentors
Okay but I'm eternally salty that TVS in particular—though it was RIGHT to expand the NWR fleet—failed to use the dynamic of the OG characters from the books all functioning as Mentors and Elder Statesmen to the newer and more obscure and younger engines.
It would have been THE way to effectively integrate the newbies (looking especially hard at you, HIT era). Like, some of the best use of the new characters already are when they fall into a mentee dynamic with one of the established characters. But the TVS writers really only ever let this happen with, like, Thomas? To a degree? And Edward? A bit? And then the best and most beloved BWBA episodes (BWBA!) are when Gordon and, again, Edward get more of this sort of material. And then again, in fuckin' AEG, the most popular thing so far seems to be Gordon's whole Grumpy Dad shtick.
But I think canon and fan writers should have done this with all the classic characters. After decades as The Famous Eight—erm, Ten—(but not Eleven—to me Oliver is in that category of newbie that needs looking after. which is what the rest of the Little Western spends most of his one book doing!) they are all  kinda old af and well-qualified and honestly just should be mentoring the diesels and younger steam engines and whatever wide-eyed newcomers are brought to the Island Where Fever Dreams Come True and Culture Shock Is Probably One Hell of a Bitch.
LIKE. Percy. Yes, absolutely Percy! He's inconsistent about standing up for himself or making good decisions in his own working life but honestly his instincts when it comes to others have always been completely on-point. And he never has any hesitation about acting on his instincts so there is a recipe here for big-brother success. He must be so wonderful with uncertain new engines. I think he would have been much better for taking Molly under his wing than Thomas, and he must be a god among many of the newer tank engines. Like the dynamic I tried to paint in my headcanon post about Harvey—Percy gives whiplash as your mentor because he will always support you 100% but sometimes he will suddenly make the most baffling decisions and if you are not, yourself, a natural chaos gremlin, you are just along for the ride and possibly dying of secondhand embarrassment. But again, you also get over it because no one will ever show up for you more consistently than Percy the Caterpillar Engine.
The BWBA era thing where Gordon winds up mentoring Rebecca is... like, fine, I guess. I don't have any complaints about it, but—as I tried to show in my ficlet with him and Derek—I think Gordon's most typical mentorships have two unmistakable characteristics:
it is insanely arbitrary as to whether or not he decides to take you on. if you wind up in his circle of trust you probably weren't trying or even remotely expecting. it is also hard for anyone else to understand why Gordon looked at a new engine and said to himself "Yes. That one." Because the way Gordon makes emotional decisions is utterly impenetrable—this is RWS canon. Why did Gordon one day go from being Pure Unadulterated Jackass Whose Only Thought So Far In His Life Has Been "Me! Me! Meeeee!" to the engine who (evidently? without?? snark???) suggested the Fat Controller let Henry out of the tunnel to take a turn on his train? Honestly we don't know but it remains Gordon's signature style. Why did Gordon do an about-face after James took the express and graciously decide James was his new buddy? Well, to save face of course, but Gordon is also not above a good grudge so it feels like a coin toss. Why did Gordon decide to be super gracious when he rescued Percy and Thomas from their RWS scrapes? No one knows but somehow these moments are so quintessentially him (even though showing up moaning and scolding would have also been quintessentially him). And—most relevantly of all—there is what I regard as his archetypal moment with BoCo. 'My dear engine! You SAVED MY LIFE.' 'I mean, you're welcome for getting rid of them but they were never actually going to kill you.' 'YES THEY WERE. THEY HAD MURDER IN THEIR HEARTS. YOU ARE A GOD AMONG DIESELS, STANDING STRONG AGAINST THE FORCES OF DARKNESS.' '... Sure.' Gordon logic is not the same as earth logic and his reasons for rejecting or accepting others seldom make much sense.
If he does take you on, you may not even notice. Gordon is very stuffy and kind of... emotionally remote. His mentorship style consists of long rambling bouts of relating/boasting about his own experiences and/or advising you, without you able to get much of a word in edgewise—but then, he does this with everyone who is ever stuck with him—and doing extraordinarily nice things for you such as pulling strings to get you the best assignments or upgrades but he'll do it all behind your back, so it might take a while before you realize. (But you'd better, because even though he deliberately decides to do these things in secret, he will also privately feel hurt and hard-done-by if you don't figure it out and thank him. Or at least exclaim happily in his presence and sing the praises of your unknown fairy godfather.)
So yes, mentor!Gordon is a lot like friend!Gordon and worker!Gordon. He is pretty damn high-maintenance but he is also genuinely quite worth it. What his relationships lack in... comprehensibility they make up for in loyalty and generosity. ALTHOUGH. It's worth laughing because I think most of the engines he takes on are decent, polite engines who perhaps have some self-confidence issues. Basically it's like any engine he meets afterwards who is in the Edward mould he is actually magnificent to, which is hysterical considering that one of the keynotes in early canon was Gordon bullying the shit out of Edward. (I still think that wasn't malicious though, and more Gordon did not yet have the remotest understanding of Himself, Theory of Mind, or How to Be a Friend.)
If you have self-confidence issues but you do not win Gordon's capricious favor, never fear! You have James. Who is even more capricious, but that's not to say he's never been the most faaaaaabulous mentor in the world, c'est ne pas? Look. I want to see James as the catalyst for shy newcomers having a glow up. In appearance and attitude. I don't think he does he often but it has definitely happened around twice. I somehow have never actually watched "Rosie is Red" or "The Fastest Red Engine on Sodor" while paying attention but I've been assuming that's exactly how Rosie's Confident Girl Arc went down. Maybe he could be a similar idol for Neville or Flora. Another thing that has happened twice is James just flat-out corrupting a couple of the Good, Buttoned-Down Boys and Girls. I still want to see James take, like, Porter or Arthur and teach 'em anger. Introduce them to the world of (tiny) rebellions. By the time James is done with them, they are starting to Display Behaviors, and Act In Certain Ways.
Henry, I firmly believe (sticking out my tongue at most of the TVS and magazine writing for him), is actually regarded very intimidating. Like Gordon and James are intimidating too, but they are also known jackasses and the universe is known to have slapped them around reliably when they get too far up their own tenders. Also Gordon usually puts on an air of affability—in RWS it's Henry who is the Grumpy One (and meanwhile James, though he has a foul temper, is just too ADHD to be properly intimidating). I suspect Henry's actually always had the reputation for being extremely snobbish. Which is silly because he's only mildly to moderately snobbish, but there you are. He also doesn't put himself out there socially, but of course if you put yourself out there to him he's perfectly friendly. Anyway newcomers and young engines wouldn't know this right away. I think Henry's specialty is mentees in the mold of Bear and my OC Laura and even Rebecca—extroverted, expressive engines who show him respect. In those cases you see his best side, all kindliness and unstinting support. And Henry's support is really valuable, for the usual reasons that all the OGs have a lot of pull on the railway but also because Henry is surprisingly sage and sensible. He doesn't have the reputation for it the way Edward does, due to some of his notoriously poor decision-making in his earlier years and the way he can still sometimes be a bit literal or naive. But even if he's had to learn most things the hard way, he hasn't lied to himself about it and therefore he's developed a very clear-eyed view on things. Refreshingly simple and sound. We see this already in the RWS Super Rescue—he's got Bear and Spamcan pretty well-pegged long before the story ends. He also values engine solidarity in a really consistent, utterly unpretentious way that shows you he doesn't even think about it, it's just become a part of who he is. I love it. And, of course, he's bold as brass. He once hissed steam at his boss and essentially told him to fuck off for no better reason than it was raining and he just wasn't feelin' it. He had the most horrid wreck in the series and after being rebuilt he just got right back on that horse, pulling Flying Kippers again for the next century without the slightest sign of trauma. So if you need him for something, he won't hesitate to move earth and heaven for a friend. He may be a bit of a hypochondriac and likes to predict doom and gloom but he is fundamentally pretty fearless when it comes time for action. (Cut him a break with the elephant thing—he's allowed to have tunnel-related trauma, okay?)
Of course there was one extroverted engine inclined to hero-worship that Henry rejected in canon as a mentee, and that was Philip. Which brings us to Edward, and I fully agree with the fandom consensus that he is the mentor ever, capable of and inclined to look out for, like, everyone. All I'm saying is that I think the others can also step up in this way... Anyway, Edward's specialty of course is engines who are in the mould of Thomas, engines who are excited and eager to work but who talk a lot and might have a streak of mischief and who are definitely considered Too Much by everyone else. Edward likes energetic gremlins. They've always kept him young at heart. And, more importantly, they trust him so completely. Probably because they can tell he's one of the few who genuinely doesn't mind them at what everyone else considers their Most Annoying. He never tells them to hold still or quiet down or make themselves smaller in any way, so they are incredibly receptive to whatever he does tell them.
But what if you're Too Much and you are not eager? If you are not susceptible to admiring Edward's stellar work ethic? I think this is where Thomas shines. Like I think HIT abbreviated and simplified the conflicts with Dennis and Billy too much but it was such a gold mine. Because Thomas, see. You get these little sneaky rotters who don't want to listen to anyone—and at first Thomas seems like the most out-of-touch engine on the rails. Coz Thomas is a tryhard. He also has that whole "corporate positivity" thing going on. Like, the way I resolve the way TVS massacring my boy is by supposing that, after all, Thomas might have really tried to adopt that persona, especially in the '80s when he was inducted into the National Collection and the, well, television series got underway and Thomas becomes damn near the most famous locomotive in the world, certainly he knows he is an icon for children, and he might have figured that, well, this means I have to be a Good Role Model and Teach Children Valuable Lessons. And so he really did try to do this whole pep-talk, moralizing, sugary sweet encouragement thing (and he has a Word of the Day calendar, lol).
And the Dennises and Billies of the world look at that and—understandably, I think—retch a little. But then they double down. And the thing is, when they push Thomas too far, Thomas forgets to be sweetness and light, and just becomes himself. First of all, a foul-mouthed little drill-sergeant wannabe ("Cinders and ashes!!!!" "Who's been late every afternoon this week?!" "You're too fat—you need exercise!" "IF YOU DIE? IF YOU DIE, MOTHERFUCKER? SO WHAT?! I WOULDN'T GIVE A SHIT COZ I'D BE TOO BUSY FINALLY RUNNING MY GODDAMN TRAIN TO TIME." - all direct quotes from Thomas the Tank Engine, ladies and gents) Secondly, an extremely experienced engine who really has done a bit of everything by this point (he even hitched a ride on the Wild Nor'wester that one time, lol) and who is pretty skeptical so he's hard to fool (Percy was the last engine to really ever get one over on him, during the Ghost Train incident, and that's ancient history by this point). If you try to get away with doing a shitty job he's bound to notice and he will be quite acid-tongued if you've pierced his PR Persona. Third, although he can be kinda self-involved and the last to "get" what's going on with newcomers, he is surrounded by his old friends, who are all pretty good about either clocking an engine's whole Deal, getting all the tea like the gossips they are, or both. So while he was still in his amiable-idiot stage of your acquaintance, you, poor rebellious fool, thought you had the run of things but all the while he was getting up to speed on your whole deal. Which means you won't be prepared, should you really commit to ongoing antisocial behavior, for Thomas the Beacon of Children Everywhere to abruptly cast up your entire life story to you and to read it for filth, telling you the merciless truth about yourself in a way that the other engines pieced together but with which they probably never hit you deadass between the eyes.
Of course, this doesn't mean the would-be punks and malcontents who get onto Sodor are instantly cured, lol (though it has gone down that way a few times—my alternate version of Billy's intro story would feature an end where he's just gobsmacked into submission). Sometimes it just means you are going to decide Thomas is your Hated Enemy for Life, but you know what? You will have to step up your game in order to compete with him or even to gain enough clout to try and sabotage him so you're still playing into his hand (if we accept TVS's idea that 'Devious Diesel' did become a part of the Sodor family, I think this is how he was successfully integrated. At some point Thomas unexpectedly read him the riot act and Diesel was like 'who the FUCK are you?? like i know i already had beef with all the main line engines but where the hell did YOU come from???' but then after decades of competition they are essentially frenemies). But mostly the thing is, you are shell-shocked for just long enough, and you'd probably shift to being a bigger asshole than before... but, during that period where you're still burned, you are also looking at all of Sodor and every engine on it with fresh eyes (because if Thomas the Merchandise Engine could ream you out like that, perhaps you underestimated everything about this place). And you are noticing something else. Once Thomas has scalded you with his bitchery, he's also your friend. It's almost his version of sharing his lunch with you on the playground. (Something something salt and vinegar.) For all he rode Henry so hard from some of the earliest days of canon, I bet you he also beat down any 'outsiders' who took shots at him. For all he and Percy squabble, they are the closest of friends (and they weren't! for decades! but the more they squabbled, the closer they got). Getting into a knock-down fistfight is alarmingly close to Thomas's love language, and by the time he's savaged you verbally he is also invested in you. Once he's told you what he really thinks of you, he's also going to start showing up for you genuinely.
And that's when the little shits see the final side of Thomas. The genuine good humor. Obviously it doesn't win over everyone but there is a real groundedness and humility that I am sure Thomas can show (I tried to show this in the fic I made with @shinygoku based off their artwork of Thomas and Daisy) that is hard to resist. He's also fucked up along the way in every way imaginable so even when he side-eyes you, he's not looking down at you. I can just see him showing screw-ups a lot of grace so long as they let down their guard even somewhat because he's been there. Hoo boy, has he been there. That's why kids actually love him (it's not your vocabulary lessons and beaming smile, Thom, though the effort is appreciated), and it's why young engines can wind up loving him too. He doesn't hold what you've done in the past against you; he genuinely believes in second chances (and third, and...). Plus he knows every engine needs some excitement and responsibility in their lives. He has never forgotten the insanity-inducing frustration of being tethered to Vicarstown station.
Basically, once you cut past Thomas's earnest (and bullshit) attempt to be Perfect Kids' Role Model, he's actually always been great at keeping it real. And that's where a genuine respect can often grow.

[IDs: 1) A fanon reference sheet of sorts for a homunculus Alphonse Elric, who represents Wrath in Fullmetal Alchemist 2003, next to Edward Elric. On the left is Al!Wrath, his left arm lifted like in common references for character designs, while Ed is the same only it's his right arm lifted instead. The homunculus still keeps a long, black hair, only that it's stylized like 2003 Sloth's hair, so it mainly covers the left part of his face. This Wrath also shares the same eye color as Sloth's, which is a dark, blueish purple. He hides most of his body in dark blue clothes, except his right human arm that originally belongs to Ed. His left pale arm is covered by a long, fingerless glove, which is also a nod to Sloth. His legs are covered by boots of the same dark purple color as the glove, his left leg also Ed's, yet not seen. Including his hair, Wrath's height reaches Ed's shoulder. As for Edward, he's seen as way less merciful than his canon counterpart. Although his character design remains the same, Ed's face, hair, and hands are all stained with blood that doesn't belong to him or Wrath. Besides this, there are color palettes for each of the characters. This reference sheet was idealized for the ongoing story, What I've Done, especially the first moment of the fic where Ed and Wrath first fight.
2) Colorless sketches of the aftermath to said battle, as Ed is wounded and his clothes are scratched and some parts ripped. Ed bears a heartbroken and mournful expression as he emotively asks, "... Al?". Wrath, on the other hand, is pissed. His hair has been cut short by Ed during their fight, so his face is more exposed than before. Wrath responds, intensely, "WHO THE HELL IS AL." /End IDs]
After writing and posting chapter 3 of What I've Done, I've been thinking a lot about Ed in this AU... because we all know that Al is basically who holds Ed back from doing more impulsive things, especially from outright killing people like Tucker. So, what would happen if Al was never present? What would happen if Ed lost Al and couldn't bring him back that night?
Here in What I've Done, I feel like Ed's self guilt would definitely be much worse in this scenario, and he would probably be even less willing to trust anyone such as Winry or Izumi. Like, he would still help people in need, but I don't think he would want to get too attached - especially since I still see Nina's death happening, which would only remind him of Al being gone as well, and Winry getting kidnapped by Barry the Chopper. If anything, I could say that Ed becomes someone akin to Scar in this AU, but he wouldn't outright kill other people - for instance, he doesn't kill Tucker because Nina snaps him out of it. Again, Ed is less merciful than his canon self, but he would likely still use his own situation to prove Scar that he's wrong for wanting to kill the military; mostly because the military is the only way Ed found to get a chance to bring his brother back, so seeing Scar try to take that away from him makes him even madder (besides all the racist and imperialistic views Ed needs to overcome). To sum up, Ed is more distant from others because he doesn't want them to get killed because of him.
Sloth is still Ed's main sin, but with all of this in mind, Wrath is yet another sin that represents him in this AU. Ed feels anger towards himself for, in his mind, killing his own mother and his brother. When younger Ed is rescued from the human transmutation, he only wants to die, because he lost everything. Ed hates himself for doing what he did, so he works really hard to get to the Philosopher's Stone, not even caring about getting his lost limbs back. He just wants to get Al back, and nothing else.
Wrath himself manifests his rage in a similar way: he's also reserved and focused on his mission. However, Wrath's hatred of himself comes from the abuse and neglect that he suffers at the hands of Dante and the other homunculi. Wrath is made to feel like he doesn't belong with them and he will never be good enough for them. Wrath never gets to know the truth behind his past until his first confrontation with Ed. He is not allowed to defend himself. He's not allowed to be himself, because Wrath is not violent or cruel like Dante labels him to be; in his first nights at Dante's, Wrath stays night after night looking after Sloth, who takes a while to look more human. Wrath is treated horribly for years by Dante, Envy, Sloth, and everyone else, until he learns to be quiet and to not act or speak out of turn. Besides Wrath retaining some of the original Alphonse's passivity, he truly is nothing like canon Wrath (2003), who's mostly impulsive and loud - though that's due to the fact the original Wrath was born out of Izumi's baby, while Al was 10 when he died.
This AU was really just for fun at first. Literally the first thought I had for it was the second doodle, because I really like this sort of trope (presumed dead?). Whenever I look up homunculus Al stuff online, it's always him AND Ed being homunculi, or Al for some reason is depicted as Pride, even though it's probably in the Brotherhood-verse and not 2003. Still, I've seen homunculus Ed content where he's Sloth... so how come I've never seen Al!Wrath before? That, plus the lack of Alphonse Elric angst in this fandom as a whole, created this not-so little AU.
Honestly, I don't think I've ever been so excited about an AU of mine. Most of my ideas are crossovers, and even if they're more elaborate, I haven't had this many ideas for one single AU before. It will be two years by the end of 2023, and it changed a lot of since then... you can check out the #homunculus al tag if you want, hehe
Thanks for reading all this if you have!!

Funny how true colours shine in darkness, and in secrecy
Tumblr media
Written for @flashfictionfridayofficial
Title from Unknown/Nth by Hozier
--
In which Ari and Edward talk about the night's sky, dreams they had as children, and the idealism of falling in love.
Context: This is based during "Out of Sight and Mind" in which the main character (Ari) returns to his home town to help his brother solve their parent's murder, 10 years after he faked his own death. Edward is one of two main love interests, Neptune is Ari's childhood best friend.
--
The night hung above them like a blanket, stars sewn in like sequins to illuminate their distance. Edward had become used to the rhythm of the night times now; once he'd understood that Ari hardly ever slept.
The elder man, illuminated by the click of the lighter and the moonlight, drew his tired eyes to the sky. "They used to have names, you know?" He took a long drag of his cigarette as Edward sat on the edge of the bed, accepting the lighter from him. He'd started to smoke more since the two of them had come to Ari's home town; they both had.
Edward looked at him curiously.
"The stars, I mean, before the wars - they had names, I read it once."
Edward peered through the open window. They looked like they needed names, as if there was something utterly incomplete about something so large being nameless. But there were so many stars, how would anyone remember them?
"I don't remember any of them," Ari finished curtly.
"When I was a kid, I thought stars would come to us, like...you could hold them in your hand."
Ari hummed, "...that's not possible."
"I know, but- we had stories-"
"Wishing stars?"
Edward nodded. Ari offered him a small smile, holding his gaze for the mere moment that he can tolerate before looking back up at the stars.
"We had those stories too," Ari admitted "...I think I believed in them, once."
"What else did you believe in?"
"Idiotic things that cost more than they were worth."
Edward lights his own cigarette, standing to lean against the wall where he could flick ash out of the open window. Ari always looked particularly interesting, as a man could be. But in the lowness of the moonlight, he looked more vivid somehow, more real. The sadness in his frown less concealed, in a way, and the darkness in his exhausted eyes brighter than ever.
"You loved them, though?" To Edward, he couldn't fathom it, his culture and upbringing had been a flourish of beuatiful colour that had done nothing but enrich his adulthood. His own kindness only attested that, against Ari's bitterness.
"I did, those stories were everything, but now I'm not sure I'm capable of love at all."
Edward took a silent drag, his eyes lingering on Ari's face - mapping scars, cuts, bruises, and his unending self-hatred. "Don't be so dramatic," he teased, flicking ash out of the window.
"I'm serious!"
"I'm sure you think you are," he flicks the end of his cigarette "-but you were the one absolutely mooning over that woman-"
"I wasn't mooning-"
"You looked ready to start hyperventilating!"
"I-" Ari's seriousness broke at Edward's teasing laugh, daring a smile himself. "...Neptune was a very old friend, and she is more beautiful now than I could have ever imagined." Even the darkness couldn't hide his blush.
"You love her!"
"I..."
"-am trying to be so serious and broody, I know." Edward lifted a hand to tuck a stray curl behind Ari's ear before he can stop himself. The elder man tilted his head up towards him, face softening at the gentle movement. "But you do love her, don't you? Because in truth, Ari, you love a lot, that's why we're here in the first place."
"It's possible," he conceded quietly. The stars continued to shine as he turned his head to them once more. Edward glanced out at the distant lights, and remembered that childhood version of him that reached out to grab them. Where does all the hope and stubbornness go? He wondered.
"Will you tell her?" Edward wondered, his own heart sinking gently at the realisation.
"Of course not, she deserves better than that."
"You should."
Ari only sighed quietly, and flicked the cigarette ash into the wind, to be carried far away from them both. "If she asks me, I will tell the truth - but I'm not putting her through my bullshit again."
Edward remained silent for a moment as he's offered the faintest glimmer of Ari's true nature. Not one bricked up by the facade he holds so tenderly, but a gentleness that shines in the darkness, in his tiredness. He really does care about some things, some people, perhaps even Edward himself.
"I understand."
Ari holds his gaze with a raised eyebrow, his eyes flickering with gentle amusement over Edward's face. "Could you ever?" No, Edward thinks, he imagines he could not.

Does anyone else have to wrestle with lore in game that doesn't click together perfectly and have to fix it with your own headcanons? I'm doing laundry and thinking about how even though Diamond City says 'No GhOuLs AlLoWeD' l, the guards never really do anything??? Yeah they tell you Hancock can't be there and to get him out of there like hes your off leash pet, but they never interject enough to have actual dialog. And still, they allow Edward Deagan to be in the Dugout Inn as one of his spawn locations to kick off the Cabot quest.
It makes sense that Deagan has the powerful ties with the Cabots that helps him from being kicked out but they don't care enough about Hancocks status of Mayor to not berate him. So I like to think that Sole bribes the guards. Just enough that they still tell him to gtfo but not kicks him out. Before people can complain, the guards will say something loud enough for the citizens to hear so there will be no more conflict. Because the guards are handling it right?
Now imagine Hancock not knowing the guards are getting slipped caps under the table and he feels like he's in the damn twilight zone. He seizes up waiting for them to start pushing with their bats when they about-face and walk the other way leaving him blinking without a word. When Sole finally admits to it, probably pretty quietly incase he's mad about it, he looses his mind and laughs his ass off.
"My brothers convinced he's running the most secure settlement in the commonwealth while his guards are taking chump change to let a ghoul run amuck in the upperstands! Priceless!"
So yeah, I think about this game too much.

Q. How could Rosalie underestimate Edward’s feelings for Bella so badly? What made her think that Edward would just go back to normal once Bella was dead? Especially since he had been already completely miserable when the two were just separated. Is she really that unobservant? Or is there more to it?
A.  Rosalie is an egocentric person.  One of the side effects of being born more beautiful than anyone else.  Though she has her good qualities—loyalty, determination, self-discipline, and a very strong bond to her adoptive family—these qualities are often overshadowed by her self-absorption.  She prefers to see Edward’s fascination with Bella as a strange quirk—and a transitory one at that.  Because to Rosalie, of course, the main love story going on here is hers and Emmett’s.  How could anyone else feel the same?  Especially about some plain-jane human girl who Edward doesn’t even want to make immortal?
Ah, we’re getting deep into Rosalie’s well of denial now!  See, Rosalie wanted Emmett, so she forced an unwilling Carlisle to change him.  It turns into true love, and Rosalie has the staring role in the happily-ever-after-romance.
And then Edward falls for a human, and he insists on keeping her human.  (Of course it’s different, since Emmett was bleeding to death, but, still) Rosalie can take this one of two ways.  One: Edward doesn’t love this girl all that much.  Two: he loves her more than Rosalie ever loved Emmett.  Which way do you think Rosalie would prefer to look at it?
This answer is always so weird to me because Emmett and Bella’s situations are just so vastly different that comparing them is nonsense. Edward’s options are: Turn Bella, Leave Bella, or Stay But Keep Bella human. Rosalie’s options were Turn Emmett or Emmett Dies. If she didn’t bring him to Carlisle it’s not like he’d go on to have a human life. He would be dead. It’s just an apples and oranges situation which SM semi-addresses and then brushes off. It’s just not the same thing at all, so for anyone, let alone Rosalie, to think it means that Edward loves Bella more is indeed weird (because when Bella IS dying guess what Edward does!).
And secondly “Because to Rosalie, of course, the main love story going on here is hers and Emmett’s.” Well . . . yeah? I feel like this is used to support Rosalie’s self-absorption, but that just seems like normal perspective to me? Everyone’s the hero of their own story. If you’re in a relationship and YOUR relationship isn’t the main love story going on from your perspective that’s . . . sad? and weird. Why would she think her brother’s love story is the main love story? I spend like, zero percent of my day wondering about how much my brothers love/d their partners.
I mean are we supposed to believe that Esme and Carlisle think E/B is the main love story in their own lives? That Alice . . . okay, actually, based on canon I guess you could read that during the events of the series, Alice might see E/B as the ‘main love story’ but that’s because she exists to be their best friend and helpful psychic enabler more than her own person. But outside that context, surely she and Jasper would be the main love story in her life.
It’s just weird to use this against Rosalie. She doesn’t know she’s a side character in a teenage vampire romance novel? Of course she assumes she’s the main character in her own life. Of course she would see her own love story as the main one!
Rosalie has her faults but this is a weird one to call out, IMO.

Hey babes! I was wondering if you could write an Ed x Male! Reader FIC? Maybe reader is Izzy’s little brother, and he’s all tatted up and covered in piercings but is like super sweet and Ed absolutely adores him? Maybe reader is out looking at the moon while the crew celebrates a successful raid or something and ed just sneaks up behind reader and wraps his arms around him and like,,,gives the sweetest little neck kisses and whispers about how much he absolutely adores reader? Idk I’m having a rough few weeks and I am in need of a fluffy Ed x male reader…
Thank you so much!! <333
Adoring | Edward Teach/Blackbeard x Male!Reader
Hey there, love! Aw, yesss! Thanks so much for the request, I really hope you like what I've done with it (I changed up some things, but only because it flowed this way, sorry, hope you like it anyway)! And I really hope things will get better for you again. I'm here if you ever need to talk to someone. <3
summary; See above.
notes; Male!Reader; Fluff; Comfort; Embrace; First Kiss; Getting Together.
Izzy and you both started on Blackbeard’s ship at the same time, running away from your former lives together. In a moment of weakness - or rather, drunkenness -, Izzy had confessed to Ed that he’s taken you with him because he couldn’t leave you behind, not knowing what was going to happen to you. Edward thought that was awfully nice of Izzy, who was usually trying so hard to be tough and act like he didn’t care about anyone, but that Blackbeard succeeded.
Ever since, though, Ed has become increasingly infatuated with you. He thought you were an incredibly handsome man, covered in tattoos - one of which even matched with Edward’s - and piercings. You looked tough, to be reckoned with, but you were an absolute sweetheart. And he loved that about you.
He wished he could be more like you sometimes. He did have a soft core, a very soft one, underneath all this Blackbeard-thing he’s got going on. The problem was that he wasn’t really able to let his own softness show. Because who was going to take Blackbeard seriously if they knew that he was actually just some guy with feelings and weaknesses?
You were only able to let your guard down around Izzy and him, too. Maybe he should try that out as well, and see how well that went over. Would you eventually like him back if he was being more himself, rather than Captain Edward Teach alias Blackbeard? Perhaps.
Sighing, Ed let himself fall back into his mattress. It was time for him to sleep and he seriously needed it. He was exhausted. He and the crew had gone and raided a ship and it went really well. The loot was amazing. Only now the exhaustion went bone-deep. But how was he supposed to sleep when you were running circles in his mind?
Having had enough, Edward swung his legs over the edge of his bed and got up. Maybe walking around the ship for a bit and looking over the sea in the moonlight was going to help him get his mind off of you for a bit.
When he walked on deck, though, he could already make out your silhouette, standing at the ship’s railing, leaning on it as you looked up at the moon. The rest of the crew was still celebrating all across the deck. It had been a very successful raid that day, after all. Ed was proud of it and so was everybody else. He liked that they celebrated it so much. They should. They deserved it.
He might have planned on getting his mind off of you - perhaps by drinking himself to sleep - but he could not bring himself to move away from you. Instead, his feet only carried him to you, until he was standing right behind you. The fact that you hadn’t noticed him yet or even tensed up either meant that you knew it was him, or you were still completely oblivious, in which case he’d have to teach you a bit more about what it meant to be a pirate and survive, he realised.
No matter what he might have considered doing, he couldn’t stop himself from wrapping his arms around your middle, pulling you close to his chest. Apparently you really had known it was him the whole time because you didn’t even jump. You simply relaxed into the embrace.
Ed’s heart rate picked up. He hadn’t expected you to melt into it like that. He didn’t know what he had expected. He hadn’t even planned on doing this, after all.
Without thinking about it, Edward started speaking softly into your ear, “You’re so fuckin’ handsome, Y/N. So kind. So wonderful. So beautiful. Inside and out. Do you know that? I think you’re fuckin' amazin’, mate.” You chuckled softly. He guessed his beard must have been tickling you, while he talked. It made him smile to hear your quiet laugh. “I’m serious! You’re fierce. You’re cute. You’re gorgeous. You make my heart do things that I didn’t even know it could do.”
He had no clue why he was suddenly saying all these things that he’s been dreaming about telling you, but thought he never would. It was as though your handsome beauty in the moonlight, which accentuated your features just right, lured him into spilling his heart’s desires.
Then, Ed became even bolder and kissed your neck ever so gently. He planted a couple of soft, feathery kisses along your neck, tightening his hold around you as he did, afraid that you would suddenly vanish. What if this was a dream?
But then you chuckled a little louder and covered your mouth in an attempt to muffle the noise. And at last, you spoke, “Edward, what’s happening? Why are you suddenly doing all of this, saying all those beautiful things?”
“I don’t know,” he answered honestly, “I adore you, Y/N. I’ve become infatuated with you throughout the years. I couldn’t get you out of my head just now and thought I’d walk around a bit and clear up my mind. Instead I find you here, lookin' so… Godly? Angelic? While you looked at the moon. And then it all just spilled out of me.”
You inhaled sharply and put your hands on his arms around your stomach, stroking your thumbs over his tattooed skin.
Turning your head, you looked at Ed; although you two were so close, he could just barely make out your eyes. You closed them and leaned in. He followed you suit.
At first, your forehead simply rested against his, while you breathed each other’s air and enjoyed the warm embrace under the moonlight. But then you moved your head and captured his lips in a kiss. He reciprocated it instantly, kissing you back passionately; although the angle put quite the strain on his neck and he could only guess it wasn’t any better for you. Thus, you parted pretty quickly and you turned around in his arms, wrapping your own around his neck to pull him in for another kiss.
Once you broke it for good this time, both of you just smiled at each other. Ed could only imagine how awe-struck and in love he must have looked. He was feeling it too, after all. And you luckily didn’t look any less like what he felt.
“I adore you, too, Ed,” you whispered eventually, combing your fingers through his long, messy hair.
Edward knew that he wouldn’t get much sleep now, but he didn’t care. This was so much better than any sleep and dreams he could ever have.

Hello! I would absolutely love to hear all of the headcanons that you have for the Let’s Dance universe :) I seriously have not been able to stop thinking about that fic since I read it earlier today! I’m dying to know anything else you have to say that’s related to it! Again, I absolutely loved your writing!
Aww! This is so sweet! You guys are too nice to me for real T-T Okay! Let’s Dance headcanons!
a lot of these are mostly gonna be about reader because you guys know less about what I think about her character and, like, where she stands in this universe so I hope that's okay!
Superficial thing, the dress I imagine her wearing is the dress that Kim wears in Edward Scissorhands, I literally love that dress so much
Eddie and Reader went to the same Snow Ball in 1980, I wonder if you guys caught onto that and what I wanted do was show how each experience led to their personalities in the present; reader is very optimistic and outgoing and she cares to see the best in people while Eddie's pretty cynical about social situations and stuff like that
Another thing I like to imagine is that Eddie had a huge crush on reader when they were in middle school but after Pat Rafferty asked you to the Snow Ball first he kind of just thought that if he asked the most popular girl out that maybe you'd notice and get jealous, very dumb 8th grade plan lol
Small detail, but when Eddie first holds her hand it's cold and the last time he holds her hands they're warm
I wonder if you guys noticed that reader knew more about Eddie than he actually told her, like she knows that he's in a band but he never told her that and she knows that his last name's Munson even though he only introduced himself as Eddie
Reader gravitates to the rejects lmao, she's good friends with Jonathan and they co-created and run the Photography club together, that's also why she has a soft spot for Will, she loves that kid so much! Like, she'd probably beat up anyone that was messing with him if she had to
"How Deep is Your Love" is the same song that played at their Snow Ball when Reader was dancing with Rafferty and Eddie was crying on the bleachers
I feel like after Eddie tells her about his club, she goes home and talks to her younger brother (yes, I headcanon that she has a younger brother lol) about D&D and he has to explain as much as he knows, you better believe the next day she's checking out some books at the library to get to the bottom of it
Also, after they get back to school on Monday, Reader absolutely chews Principal Higgins out for discriminating against students and threatens to resign as VP if he doesn't lay off of Eddie
Okay, that's all the ones I've got so far! Please, if you have any headcanons of your own I would LOVE to read them so please send an ask or something!

In which I claim Edward from Twilight is a more sympathetic love interest than the Bat Boys
I think one of the things that makes the bat boys so unlikeable is that they are unique among the "troubled self-loathing tough male character."
Most brooding male characters who think themselves monsters internalize their self-hatred. They're cold and distant, reluctant to give themselves over to the female love interest for fear that they'll hurt her or infect her with their monstrosity. Their very existence is an affront, and they are loathe to burden others with it. This type of character IS very sympathetic! Even in objectively terrible works, like Twilight, I understand why people are drawn to Edward. He is suffering, but he hurts himself in his suffering. You want to feel sorry for him and help him, show him that he's worthy of love.
The bat boys, by contrast, hurt everybody else in their suffering. Especially women. They loudly announce their trauma to everybody and expect to be excused for how they treat others based on that trauma. They hate themselves, but instead of being withdrawn, they overcompensate by being arrogant and cruel. Anybody who doesn't feel sorry for them and work their own issues around them is an enemy. And again, these people are usually the bat boys' female love interests.
Rhysand, who was sexually assaulted and treated badly by Amarantha for decades, is aggressively flirtatious and hypersexual with Feyre. He sees somebody going through something similar that he did, and instead of treating her with kindness and compassion, he works to make her as uncomfortable as possible.
Azriel has been mooning after Mor for 500 years, refusing to either talk to her about it and get closure, or move on. He sees himself as a bastard child that doesn't deserve love, and the women in his life must suffer for it. Mor has to deal with him following her around like a lovesick puppy knowing that nothing she says or does will appease him. His other potential love interests (Elain and Gwyn) also have to handle his self-loathing that he won't talk about or move on from.
Cassian is, quite frankly, the worst of them all. He only respects those who give him the respect that he thinks he deserves. He'll joke and tease and make declarations about how much he loves feyre, his brothers, and mor, because they coddle him and treat him like the big macho hero with a heart of gold that he thinks he is. Nesta, whose crime is having a personality and not falling at his feet, only gets his cruelty. He's insecure, and when he's challenged on those character flaws, he lashes out. He screams at Nesta in public to "put her in her place." Any time she rejects him, he whines and cries about how it's because he's an "illyrian dog" and she can't SEE PAST THAT and makes all of his issues Nesta's problem.
And I do think this new kind of Man(tm) is the result of an abuse of online language regarding mental health. People have turned the concept of being sympathetic of people suffering from trauma and mental illness into a refusal to take accountability for their actions. If somebody knows about your trauma, it is up to THEM to handle how you act. Your actions are excused because of your trauma. Anyone who does not coddle you and make excuses for you is an enemy and a bigot.
IN CONCLUSION!!! I'm not here to say that brooding self-hating male characters aren't fun and sexy. They absolutely can be! But when they put the burden of handling their self-hatred on everybody else, especially the women they supposedly love, it is NOT fun and sexy.

Edwin Week 2022: Day 6: Secrets
@503week
(Two in one day because they were both half written)
Day 1  Day 2  Day 3  Day 4  Day 5
Characters: Edward Elric, Winry Rockbell, Alphonse Elric
Fanfiction
AO3
Despite what his behavior might indicate, Edward Elric had never been very good at keeping secrets. He was much more likely to just admit to something than try to weave an intricate tale to avoid conversations. He often operated under the assumption that if he knew it, other people must also know it, since it was so obvious to him.
As children, Al and Winry would often be the ones to pinky-promise or hide things from adults, quick to conspire or build elaborate stories to avoid having to spill their own secrets. They were the ones awake at night, whispering and giggling stories or made up tales to each other, while Ed slept like a log, ignorant of whatever conspiracy was developing between his brother and best friend.
So good at keeping to their chest any details or plots, that Winry and Alphonse would never actually tell Ed what they had done even if he was well wrapped up into it and its consequences.
The first time Ed experienced this was when he was left standing in front of a sopping wet Granny, hands on her hips and rage burning in her eyes.
“Don’t give me that crap, Edward. You’re the only one smart enough to have rigged the sink to spray right at my face level.”
Ed’s mouth was agape and he wavered where he stood. He had walked into the kitchen right as the mentioned offense happened, the water pressure being strong enough to knock Granny’s glasses right off of her face and knock her backwards.
Ed squirmed under the stern gaze of the older woman. “I’m serious Granny. I had nothing to do with it.”
A finger whipped up into his face, accusations flying behind it. “So you just happened to walk in when I got hit with a water jet?!”
Ed nodded. “I just wanted a snack. I didn’t know that would happen. It could have happened to me!”
“Which is exactly how I know it was you. You are the same height as me and would have used that to develop the angle for the water.”
“No!”
“Yes, you little shrimp. And don’t you blame this on anyone else. You’re the only genius in this house who could have done something to my faucet. Now fix it!”
Ed continued his griping and whining as he spent the rest of his beautiful summer afternoon fixing a faucet he most definitely didn’t mess with in the first place. He didn’t know much about faucets to begin with, and this one wasn’t a simple band trick around the spout. He had to go get tools to pull out a specialized curved rock that had been shoved up it to achieve the perfect face spray.
He was so caught up in the indignation that he was being blamed for the whole incident that he never once thought to consider who might have done it. That ‘who’ being another alchemist and mechanic duo with little fingers but crafty minds.
At dinner the agreement between Ed and Granny continued, causing the two of them to miss the exchanged sheepish looks shared between the actual pranksters.
The whole faucet occurrence was forgotten soon after, the attempted human transmutation taking forefront in their lives and overshadowing any memory of small spats such as that.
Promise day came and went, bringing with it the aftermath of fixing past mistakes and leaving a future uncertain. Ed and Al moved back in with Granny and Winry, working on rehabilitating their bodies and readjusting their minds to civilian life.
Ed had always been so busy and caught up in his tasks while working as a state alchemist that he had all together lost his ability to just evade answering questions.
Was it a byproduct of being forced to answer to higher ups? Or was it just his unwillingness to put brain power into weaving a lie or vaguely answering when he had better things to think about, like all things alchemy? The world may never know.
“Ed!” Winry had shouted at him in disbelief one day when they were walking back from town with groceries in hand. “The least you could have done is lie!”
“Why?!” Ed was flustered and annoyed at being in trouble. “They asked for my opinion and I gave it!”
“You all but told them their design was garbage. Didn’t you see how dejected they looked after that!”
Ed worked his jaw, trying to come up with a retort. He didn’t have one so he just repeated himself. “They wanted to know what I thought.”
Winry huffed loudly, snapping her head to look straight ahead, so angry at his previous behavior and current response. “They are kids, Ed! They look up to and want to be an alchemist just like you. You could have told them what they did right with the circle thing instead of pointing out the lines weren’t sharp.”
“If they aren’t crisp and clean it doesn’t work. It’ll help them in the long run to know things like that!”
“Not everyone is as good as you are with learning. Sometimes focusing on the good helps people more. Even if it has to be a lie at the moment.”
Ed felt bewildered. Winry had stop shouting at him and was now just annoyed in her tone. The walk home was long with the silence that has fallen between them. Ed stopped at the stoop, wanting to say something to Winry, but she spoke first.
“You know, that is why Al and I never included you in our pranks as kids.”
Ed’s eyes shot up to hers, looking down at him from the door way. “What?”
“You can’t ever tell a fib or keep a secret if asked directly. We knew you would indirectly rat us out to adults, so we just didn’t tell you anything. That way you couldn’t get us in trouble.”
All the times Ed had been scolded by adults for the weird happenings as a kid came flooding back into his mind. The school teacher being upset with him for messing up the composition of her chalk. The farmer down the road mad that the fence’s hinges were too tight and he couldn’t open it. The store clerk chasing him down for the soda fountain rupturing from the excessive pressure on the carbonated water canisters.
Granny making him fix the faucet.
Ed reeled back on his heels. He couldn’t believe what was just revealed to him. All those times he was blamed by adults for the shenanigans going on, and it was the always ‘innocent’ Al and Winry at the center of it.
Winry shot him a look that clearly said, “What’s your problem?”, and he was shot out of his internal reeling to drop the basket of groceries, causing a loud “The hell, shrimp?” from granny, and flew his right hand up to point with rage at the woman in front of him.
“IT WAS ALL YOUR DOING?”
Winry, clearly unaware of what caused the outburst and unamused by his action of dropping the produce, rolled her eyes at him before turning around to enter the house. Ed didn’t pick up the forgotten potatoes, broccoli, apples, and other foods, choosing instead to be hot on Winry’s heels into the house. Granny would later pick it all up while muttering about how useless Ed was. Ed’s focus was elsewhere – getting to the bottom of this apparent life-long secret of keeping him out of the loop.

I think, personally, I prefer Roy Mustang to be a father figure over someone like Maes Hughes or Sig or anyone else is because Mustang was the first person (ie; male figure) to genuinely hold Ed (and Al, by extent) for their actions.
He saw the human transmutation circle. Instead of being gentle with Ed, he immediately scolds him, before calming down and offering him a way to fix his mistake.
He works hard to keep Ed and Al’s secret safe, even stammering a bit when Shou Tucker asks about them. He’s there for them, and he’s the one who pushed them forward, exactly like a father would. This post explains the dynamic better than I could, to be honest.
Sure, Mustang and Ed argue a lot, and it’s 100% valid to see them more as brothers! I thought so too for a while, until I rewatched the 03 anime. There’s a lot of moments where it just screams “wow, Mustang’s a dad”. I personally think this post explains one episode really well.
At the end of the day, everyone has their own opinions, and that’s fine. But to the people bashing on the concept of Mustang being fatherly...don’t.
A direct part from “The Abducted Alchemist” here shows that it’s not impossible for Ed to consider Mustang a father figure:
“Well,” the man was saying with a smile, “maybe you can tell your father to get his act together for us!”
“Yeah, we’re on your side, kiddo.”
“And if he ever comes this way, you tell him to drop in for a drink on the house.”
It looked like this inn, at least, welcomed the military’s business. Edward smiled. All this talk of his father being in the military reminded him of when they ran into Roy on the train, back before they’d heard about the terrorists. For those few moments, when he ran up to Roy, Edward did have a father in the military, and he was surprised to find he wasn’t exactly sure how he felt about that.
So...no more bashing, saying that it’s “impossible” for them to view each other in a familial light. Or, a father/son light.
As for the whole situation with Hughes...he is a good father. Completely the opposite of Hohenheim. However, he isn’t the one to push the boys to do their best, and he isn’t the one who helped put them on the right path. He’s there for the Elric Brothers, and they enjoy his company, but he mostly pops in and out whenever he pleases. Me personally, I feel like he’s more like that one obnoxious (very affectionate) uncle who jokes about taking the father’s place.
But that’s just me.
For Izumi and Sig, they no doubt helped fill holes in the Elrics hearts, and when Izumi is being gentle and kind, she is very motherly. There’s no doubt that, with the knowledge she lost her baby and they lost their mother, they can identify with her. But, like Mustang, she isn’t biologically related to them.
The best they can be is parental figures.
I’m not 100% sure how Sig feels about the boys, but we do know he clearly cares for them.
I like the idea that Ed and Al have two sets of parental figures- his military family, and his non-military family.
That being said, I personally still prefer Roy Mustang being his main parental figure, as he’s the one who sees them off the most. (Also, as many people have pointed out, Ed is a minor, so there will be things he needs a legal guardian for, and that duty would fall on Mustang, since he’s his commanding officer...but, again, that’s just a bonus)
Anyway I’m done ranting I just needed to get this off my chest

Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from all of the media that you loved (can be anime/manga, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them? Thanks....
I'm probably super late to answer, but this is such an interesting question. The following list is in no particular order; I'll also mostly disregard what I think of the franchises in general, any shipping stuff, and whether or not I think the character was done justice in canon. With many series, I kept reading/watching beyond what I truly enjoyed, because I adored the characters. A good story is important, but I won't truly get invested unless there is a person or dynamic I wholeheartedly love. Also, this got way longer and more poetic than I intended.
Levi Ackermann (Attack on Titan): Love him. Love him to bits. Love that he is technically an overpowered character, but so fallible. Always falling short in a lot of way, often unable to save those he loves. Still trying to do what's right, trying to make the world a better place. He is so full of hurt, and love. I love how everything about him is a contradiction; he is tiny but Humanity's Strongest, a literal son of a whore and the commander's right hand man, a thug with a potty mouth and a cleaning fetish. Levi cares and he cares so deeply. He is such an iconic character
2. Edward Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist, particuarly 2003): Another tiny boi. Full of genius and heart and grief and rage. Edward is intriguing because he learned a really hard lesson when he was just a child. The story literally opens with him making the biggest mistake of his life, and then follows him trying to make amends. I love how is a spunky teen, and a major in a corrupt military, and a big brother, and a prodigy. A loud protagonist like him could easily have been a caricature, but instead he has a lot of facets and depths, and seeing him grow was a delight.
3. Ronan Lynch (The Raven Cycle & The Dream Trilogy): Ronan. Ronan, Ronan, Ronan who is capable of the most fanciful dreams and the most garish nightmares. Whose greatest gift is the worst burden anyone can possibly imagine. He is so tough and so vulnerable. Ronan is bruised knuckles and black boots and sprawling tattoos; he is Sunday mess and hand cream and raven chicks hand-reared in his palm. Ronan grows an entire forest out of a dead language, he would die for his family and friends, and kill for them, too. He prays and dreams and does not talk about his feelings. Ronan is barbed wire: he hurts and he protects, and sometimes he gets all tangled up in himself, only few people dare get close enough to try and unravel him again.
4. Dean Winchester (Supernatural): Hurt boi #4 because they are my favorite flavor. I love that he had to grow up way too quickly. From the beginning of the series, he was such an interesting juxtaposition, hyper-masculine but also geeky, a maternal figure to his brother and a failure in his own eyes, chosen by God and hunted by Hell. He went through so much and still always tried to put other people first. Self-destructive to a fault, insanely quotable, stupidly handsome, and beautifully 3-dimensional.
5. Tanaka Ryounosuke (Haikyuu!!): The joker, the idiot, the loudmouth, the perv even. The backbone of Karasuno that never breaks. Tanaka has such beautiful contrasts in him. He could be such a one-note character (if haikuu had any one-note characters), but instead he is what the team desperately needs. Where everyone else has their moments of weakness and despair, Tanaka is so reliable on the court, which makes the one match where he hits a wall feel so daunting. I love that he messes around a lot but, ultimately, he is always there, from the very beginning. I love his posturing and how he is ultimately just a boy from a small town. I love that he gets the girl. I also love that Saeko is his sister, but she didn't quite make it onto this list.
6. Fa Mulan (Disney, animated original, ofc): Mulan was my crush and my rolemodel and my pre-teen bisexual awakening. She embodied genderfluidity in a way that was way ahead of its time. Mulan is soft and feminine and caring, she is tomboyish and klutzy and wicked-smart, she is strong and manly and suited for war. Mulan's decision to join the army was not born out of a need to run away or prove her worth or to kill the Huns. She did it out of love, to protect her father, her family, her country. She knowingly put herself in grave danger, either by dying on the battlefield or by being found out. To me, the moment she is pulls herself up the pole to get the arrow is one of the most iconic in film history; that shit shaped me. She also managed to bag Shang, and boy, was he the other half of my sexual awakening.
7. the Unicorn/Lady Amalthea (The Last Unicorn): The whimsical fairy tale setting allows for such interesting story setting. The idea that she is the last of her kind, that she didn't even know because she was living in her eternal forest, that she left the sanctity of her home to look for the others, with no idea what she would find... I love that she, too, is ultimately a terrible and ancient thing, much like the harpy. I love her arrogance and ignorance, her wisdom and naivety. I love that she is turned into a human and hates it, and hates it more when she falls for Prince Lear. I love that she has to be brave and fight to save the other unicorns, that she succeeds but is forever changed. She is the last unicorn, and the first that learns to love. It's such a bittersweet ending, such a painful parting, and cherishes it nevertheless.
8. Brienne of Tarth (A Song of Ice and Fire): A tall woman. An ugly woman. A woman who is ugly and stays ugly, who grows strong because and in spite of it. The world has been so terrible to Brienne, many times over, but still she chooses to be kind. She devotes herself to Renly because he danced with her once, to Caitlyn because she showed her kindness, to Jaime even because he finally looked and truly saw her. I love how, especially in the books, we get to see a lot of Brienne through Jaime's eyes, how she grows more beautiful and precious the more he gets to know her. Brienne does not have to change for a man to love her; a man is changed because he loves her. Brienne is valor and strength and hard work through and through. She is a knight and she is a woman and neither has been a easily won.
9. Minerva McGonagall (Harry Potter): Do I even need to say anything? McGonagall, especially as portrayed by Dame Maggie Smith, is an icon. She is a badass. She cares for her students, even if she doesn't openly show it. She is easily the best teacher at Hogwarts, for quite a number of reasons. She is loyal and good and true. She does not pull her punches. She's witty and visceral and the kind of grounded mature character that HP needed, without turning into a caricature like some of the others. Many of the most memorably moments from HP canon, imo, involve McGonagall. From her welcoming the first-years over her feud with Umbridge to her stepping up against Snape and finally desperately calling Harry's name when she believes him dead. I was never a true Potterhead, but God, do I adore her.
10. Stiles Stilinski (Teen Wolf): The sidekick that was the protagonist to most. Dylan O'Brien brought so much to the table here. Stiles is the everyman amidst a sea of monsters, and yet he is the true force to be reckoned with. Stiles was the heart of the show and the brain. He was the snark and the ace up their sleeves. I love my quiet, tormented boys, but I also love my loud-mouthed idiots who are actually crucial for the group to succeed. I stopped watching TW a long time ago, but I still often think about Stiles.
Some honorable mentions:
Sokka (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
Keith (Voltron: Legendary Defender)
Sailor Mars/Rei (Sailor Moon)
Madame Adelaide (Aristocats)
Elle Woods (Legally Blonde the Musical)
Thor (MCU)
Spock (Star Trek)
Newt Scamander (Fantastic Beasts)
Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III (How to Train Your Dragon)
