#encanto karma au
Note
In Karma, how long did it take for Alma to realize that she doesn't separate Luisa and Mirabel?
Well, she found it very quickly that her rule of separation hadn’t worked. Luisa came down to breakfast the next morning with Mirabel in her arms. Following that, Luisa refused to talk to her and kept Mirabel to herself in her room.
She does later stand down, having a similar realisation to Pepa; having been encouraged by her daughter. She has a more reflective and sweet talk with Luisa, apologising and praising Luisa’s behaviour because if something similar had happened to one of her triplets when she was younger and able to fight, she would have done the same.

I just thought of an au where Mirabel did get a gift but it isn't so much useful to the Encanto as it is Karma.
Let's say you tsay something bad about Mirabel, whether she hears you or not. Between than and the next day, you might bite your tongue, or get laryngitis suddenly and be unable to speak for the rest of the day.
If you think dangerous or negative thoughts about her you end up with a headache
But if you say something nice to her, you might end up finding something that you've been trying to find all or be given a free extra treats that happens to be your favorite.
Being kind to Mirabel benefits you
They’d better watch what they do then then 😭 like the fact that it don’t even gotta be a physical action?? CRAZY….Mirabel def gets a lot more respect, not that she had many enemies or anyone in town necessarily hates her, she’s actually pretty well liked—but obviously there’s those few that would. Ruin everything. But you know. Karma <33

imagine if Mirabel stole masa's magic kits and replaced them with fakes and masa finds out when he and the other mpreg men are just floating in the water, surrounded by the ruins of their boat which was sunken in by their pregnancy weight 😂

Villain!Bruno AU: Abuela Alma
I’m feeling rather lazy today (thank the Gods for vacation), so I figured I’d talk a bit more about Abuela Alma in the Villain!Bruno AU.
In my last QnA posts, I described how the Madrigal Family reacted to Casita’s destruction and having their magic taken away. The last person I described was Abuela Alma, who ends up becoming so emotionally (and mentally) distressed that she completely shuts down and just spends the majority of the ending sulking in that one river bend.
While everyone else is trying to adjust, Alma is practically inconsolable. Everything that she had and hoped for - gone. What could possibly make her happy when her pride and joy no longer exists? She goes into a mental breakdown, her stress building up along with her age.
Now, it is actually possible to be under so much stress that you can be susceptible to various health problems. If it is severe, it can lead to heart attacks, high blood pressure, diabetes, anxiety, depression, and other mental illnesses. Severe stress can also lead to hallucinations, especially if you are also suffering from hearing and visual loss.
The first few visions frightened Alma immensely. Every time at the corner of her eye, she could swear she saw Bruno. Not him entirely, but his eyes. A pair of glowing green eyes staring at her from afar within the shadows. Eventually, along with his eyes, Alma could see his green hooded poncho as well. Everywhere she looked, there he was, hiding in darkness. All alone in the river bank, mourning the loss of Casita, and now haunted by Bruno. A son whom Alma disowned for his gift, for his imperfections. Is this retribution? Is this for what she had done in the past? Is this a demon from Hell in the form of her son? Whatever it is, Alma cannot stop seeing him. That is, until she begins to lose her vision. Now almost blind, Alma finds herself lost in the Colombian forests, trying to head back to her family. She may be no longer tormented by the sight of Bruno, but now she cannot run away from her audible surroundings.
All around her is the sound of scuttling. Multiple claws and teeth, scratching and biting and squeaking.
Rats.... rats everywhere.

Bc of that one AU on TikTok where they're drawing all of the Encanto characters as spider people What I think the Madrigals families spidersonas would be called
Mirabel: Arachne (the Greek mother of spiders)
Isabela: spider-flor (spider flower)
Luisa: Dynasty (It just fits her)
Julieta: Araña(spider in Spanish) /or Athena (the creator of Arachne)
Pepa: Missulena (a type of spider)/ or Requiem (Requiem means an act of remembrance. It'd be in requiem to her father who died for them)
Bruno: Karma (Just like works considering his power)
Dolores: Echo ( there are types of spiders who use echolocation)
Camilo: Goldenrod (goldenrod crab spiders can change their colors similar to a chameleon)
Antonio: Kid widow (He's a kid. He likes Black widows. Nuff said.)

YES! AU where Luisa throws Camilo out of Encanto calls him out for all the shit he've done to Mirabel! Camilo had to get what he deserves!
Not sure what the full AU would be or what to name it, but here’s a small drabble:
Warning, potentially sensitive topics below.
~~~~~~
“YOU SICK SON OF A BITCH!”
Luisa seemed to come from nowhere, which was ironic considering she was anything but subtle. From the kitchen, she charged her entire body into Camilo’s, sending them both hard against the nearby wall.
Before Camilo can process, he has a fist to his nose. And there’s an audible crack.
Antonio whimpers, curling up into Dolores’ arms. Parce is quick and alert, growling around them protectively. Isabela winces at the familiar sight of a broken nose in the dining room. Dolores herself, for once, looks to be a little behind with what’s happening, completely stuck in shock.
Camilo hisses in pain. He’s shifting before anyone knows it - though his nose doesn’t change - he takes the form of his attacker. Of course, he doesn’t have her strength. But it gives him slightly more power than normal and at least an equal footing.
They tussle and squirm. Then, Luisa’s hand closes around his throat and pins him to the wall.
Pain or nerves, nobody’s sure, but Camilo immediately drops back into his own form, desperately wiggling in his cousin’s grasp.
“LUISA!”
Vines tug at Luisa’s shoulders, causing her to stumble back ever so slightly before she regained her footing. Camilo crumpled to the floor without her holding him in place, Casita’s tiles breaking his fall.
Without missing a beat, Luisa went to lunge at Camilo again, but was dragged back.
It was weird to see Isabela actually acting like the eldest once; Dolores is still frozen in shock. Putting so much effort, she was visibly sweating in order to keep Luisa back.
“Let go of me!” Luisa roared.
“You were going to fucking kill him!” Isabela fired back.
“Good! He fucking deserves it!”
Good thing that Mirabel's alive. But when will we see the cold family beating the shit out of Camilo? And what others were doing? Does Dolores already know with her hearing?
Ha. What do you think everyone’s doing while Luisa does a one-woman retelling of A Christmas Carol?
Warning, potentially sensitive topics below.
~~~~~~
“Don’t talk to me.” Isabela snaps when Camilo opens his mouth. “Same for you,” she added, turning to an equally puzzled Dolores. “I’m trying really hard to keep myself under control.”
“What are you talking about, Isa? Are you okay?” Dolores asked.
“Dolores, I’m serious, if you want your boyfriend’s nose to remain unbroken, shut the fuck up.”
Isabela stalked off, after that.
“What’s up with her?” Bruno questioned.
“No idea. I’ve not been listening,” Dolores responded. “I was trying to keep an ear on Antonio. And our parents. They are on their way back.”
“That’s good. I’m sure they’ll sort this out.” Said Camilo.
“No need, Julieta and Agustín are already here.” Bruno pointed out, standing up.
Dolores and Camilo turned, watching their Tío and Tía slowly make their way into Casita. They both were walking backwards, seemingly guiding in a blood stained and half-dressed Luisa, who was cradling an unconscious Mirabel.
“Careful, Luisa. You don’t want to be too rough with her.” Julieta chided.
“I’m not being rough with her!” Luisa snapped.
She never took well to being accused of forgetting her strength, especially around Mirabel.
“No, but you are holding her quite protectively,” Agustín intervened. “Loosen your grip a bit, mija - gently. Yes. That’ll do.”
“Um,” Bruno announced walking over, he swallowed nervously. “I know this is a really stupid question, but I feel like it has to be asked, so I’ll just get it out of the way: is Mirabel okay?”
Julieta didn’t look amused; Luisa was ready to strangle him.
“No?” Agustín answered, unsurely.
“What happened?” Dolores asked next.
Agustín stepped aside to explain to Bruno and Dolores, while Julieta ushered Luisa along.
“Take Mirabel upstairs, Luisa, and clean yourself up. Your Abuela won’t want blood through the house.”
“You might want to clean the patio then.” Luisa advised before leaving.
Julieta signed, walking off to grab some supplies from the cupboard. She might as well get to cleaning. There’s nothing else she can do until Mirabel wakes up.
~~~~~~
While she’s scrubbing, she hears the sound of awkward footsteps and she assumes it’s Agustín and he’s injured himself. Or maybe Bruno and his rats are peckish.
But when she looks up, she sees her nephew.
She has to assume Isabela got at him. He’s got a severe rash over half his face and he keeps scratching at his arm through his ruana. And there’s a hand print on the other side of his face too; almost bruising his skin.
Maybe it was Isabela too. But she doesn’t think Isabela would have risked getting the rash herself.
Maybe it was Dolores who hit him.
Or maybe it was both of them.
He does look very rough and his clothes are more disbelieved than they usually are.
She doesn’t say anything to him.
It’s not her job to discipline him for his actions. It’ll be more devastating to have his parents do it.
Or better yet, it’ll be more devastating to rob him of the attention he so desperately wants and is so accustomed to. They should just ignore him entirely.
“I’m sorry,” he says, eventually. “It was just a prank.”
Julieta doesn’t have anything to say.
She just looks down at the ground. Soap, white and red mixing into pink, and the yellow tags.
Mirabel’s blood.
“She wasn’t meant to get hurt— I didn’t know about the trap, that wasn't part of it. I’d left by then.” Camilo continued.
“I’m not the one you should be apologising to.”
“I-I know that, but—”
“You want me to heal you?” She guessed. “I’ll leave that decision to Mirabel.”
Camilo choked.
“But she won’t— she won’t help me! She’ll say it’s a ‘waste of resources’ because it’s not a ‘serious’ injury.”
Julieta hummed in acknowledgment.
“Isabela has covered my room - all my clothes, my things - in poison ivy! And, like, a hundred other itchy plants! I can’t live like that.”
That explains why Isabela was keen to get home before them.
Sneak into Camilo’s room before he realises everyone knows and should be on guard, covering it in plants that won’t directly injure him but make him uncomfortable; she’s definitely inherited Pepa’s evil genius.
“Tía? Are you listening to me?”
No.
She doesn’t know how long it takes, but Camilo slowly sulks off.
Keep going! What will Pepa and Felix do to Camilo?
Who knows?
Warning, potentially sensitive topics below.
~~~~~~
“So I couldn’t find Tía Julieta or Tío Agustín, so Parce said I should get you guys,” Antonio explained to his parents.
“That was a good idea.” His mother said.
His father nodded. “We might not have healing powers, but we will have your brother fixed up in no time.”
“Fuc-dge, you guys are back already.” Bruno exclaimed. “I, uh… well, there’s been some news.”
“What news?”
“Don’t worry! I told them, Tío Bruno!” Antonio declared, happily. “They’ve come to help make Camilo feel all better and keep Luisa from getting too angry.”
He winced. “Maybe we should go into the other room, Toñito? There’s some baby rats that need naming.”
Parce followed quickly but Antonio looked a bit unconvinced. “Really? Are you sure? I didn’t hear about that.”
As soon as Antonio was well and truly out of the way, the storm exploded.
“What!?” Pepa cried. She rounded on Agustín, who had been sat peacefully with Bruno. “What has Luisa done to our son this time? I keep telling you and Julieta that you need to sort her out, she’s too overprotective—”
“Mirabel almost died.” He replied.
“What?”
“What!?”
“Camilo and his friends were playing some prank on her. Long story short: she got caught in a hunting trap and hasn’t been in a stable enough position to be healed.”
Félix remained quiet.
Pepa just shook her head. “No… no, no. Our Camilo would never… it must be these friends, he has always been easily influenced. There must be a reason for this.”
“I don’t care what the reason was, my daughter almost died. Being reduced to an animal. They hunted her like a deer.” Agustín retorted.
Pepa broke down in tears, Félix placed a hand on her shoulder and opened an umbrella that Casita passed over.
“How is Mirabel?” Félix questioned, hesitantly.
“Still out of it, I think,” Agustín took a shaky breath. “You know how she squeamish she is - not that she needed that on top of everything else that happened. Julieta has bandaged her up, but.. well, she’ll be too late to be healed.”
Félix nodded in understanding. “Let us know when she’s awake, so we can apologise for Camilo’s behaviour.”
“But he wouldn’t… he’s a good kid,” Pepa whimpered.
“He’s never been great with Mirabel, we know that.”
“He wouldn’t do something like this, Félix.”
“And maybe his friends did influence him, but he was part of it and needs to be punished.”
“He didn’t actually take part in anything,” Agustín admitted.
Pepa took a breath of relief.
“But he was there for when they put the deer tags in. He’d left when they started chasing her.”
And Pepa broke down again.

Pepa and Felix are now in! What would they do first, apologize to Mirabel or discipline Camilo?
Also, I want to see how Dolores smashed Camilo's face
Well…
There isn’t much to say. She just smacked him in the face.
Warning, potentially sensitive topics below.
~~~~~~
The evening settled.
Félix had taken Julieta’s advice, ignoring Camilo entirely for the time being.
While Pepa still was in disbelief and couldn’t make up her mind, so she had retreated to their room to avoid everyone.
Félix had decided to go with Julieta and Agustín when they went to check on Mirabel for a third time since they’d come home. Even though the chances looked she wouldn’t be conscious.
To their surprise, however, she was awake and curled up against Luisa, but not doing great.
Mirabel refused to eat or drink anything, still feeling nauseous. Though Agustín did leave a glass of water for both girls on Luisa’s bedside table.
Julieta had convinced Luisa to step aside for a moment, so that she could have some time with Mirabel.
“She’s been awake for ten minutes. She’s not done much,” Luisa admitted, whispering. “I tried reading to her, but she just cried throughout. She is in a lot of pain.”
“I can imagine,” Agustín said.
“She’s terrified too. She doesn’t want to talk about what happened. I can feel her little heart beating so fast when she’s thinking about it.”
“Rest assured, Camilo will be punished.” Félix replied.
“Good. I refuse to let her go, I’m keeping her with me.”
“Just letting you know now, mija - your sister also wants a day of getting to nurse Mirabel.”
“Isabela!? She can barely keep a stick alive!”
“Luisa, we spoke about this—”
Mirabel made a miserable noise.
“I’m fine. It really isn’t that bad, Mama. In fact, I already feel much improved.” She insisted. She glanced at the book. “Where is Lu? When is she coming back?”
“I’m here,” Luisa called from behind.
Mirabel still found that moving made her very dizzy, hence why she hadn’t moved. But she slowly forced herself to turn her upper body around, facing the other side of the room where Luisa, Agustín and Félix were.
Luisa clambered back onto her bed, adjusting Mirabel more comfortably.
“Sorry. I-I thought you had left.” Mirabel mumbled.
“You don’t need to keep apologising, you haven’t done anything wrong, hermanita.” Luisa said gently. She flickered her gaze among the adults, mouthing, “We can talk later. I’d rather her be comfortable and distracted right now.”
The parents, though tense and unsure, nodded in understanding. They backed away quietly and slowly.
Félix hesitated for a moment before following after them.
Agustín shut the door quietly.
He sighed, “At least she’s awake now.”
“She’s not doing great,” Julieta wrung her hands. “She looks so pale.. I don’t want her going to sleep until she’s drank and eaten something.”
Félix left the couple to it, returning to his and Pepa’s room, where the weather had seemingly calmed a bit since he was last in here.
“I saw Mirabel,” he said.
“What did you say to her? Did you ask about Camilo? What did she say?”
“Very little. I didn’t speak to her. She’s struggling to keep herself from crying out in pain. It was more important to let Julieta speak to her - I didn’t want to stress her.” He took a breath, sitting down on the bed beside his wife, taking her hand. “I know this is a shock, but she’s not okay and Camilo needs to learn what he did was wrong.”
“But he didn’t do anything. I know he didn’t; he wouldn’t. And you heard Agustín.”
“He didn’t put a stop to it either, Pepita.”
Pepa didn’t respond.
The clouds above thundered and darkened.
“I’ll talk to Camilo and give him his punishment. But only after someone does the same to Luisa.” She paused. “Fair is fair.”
I really hope that adult will react normally on this. Or that Luisa will ignore them all and just gatekeep Mirabel to herself
Luisa would love that.
~~~~~~
Luisa doesn’t dignify any of the adults with a response when she appears at breakfast the next morning.
Of course, she gets questions and comments from everyone, she’s carrying Mirabel around like a toy doll in her arms. Just like she did before her gift ceremony, when Mirabel was a tiny baby and somehow smaller than Luisa’s dolls.
She hasn’t been shouted at though.
Maybe it’s because Mirabel is actually there herself, and she is still finding it difficult to do much, so she just looks like she is sleeping.
Luisa isn’t planning to stay either. Just make some breakfast and return to her room.
And she definitely doesn’t want to see Camilo.
“Should we do something today?” Luisa asks. “We could go out somewhere.”
“I’m terrified, I don’t want to go outside.”
“Isabela said you wanted to go out yesterday?”
“To find you. I thought you were overworking and I was concerned.”
She can feel heart swell.
“You are so precious. I don’t know why you put up with me and my stupidity - I’m not gonna overwork myself ever again. I’m not going to work at all. I’m just going to cuddle you.”
Julieta tapped her foot a little impatiently.
Luisa cooking meant she’d been denied access to the kitchen.
“Luisa, in case you haven’t noticed, your Abuela wants to speak with you.”
“And I don’t.”
“Luisa, even Isabela is managing to do as she was told.”
“Good for her.”
“Can you at least let me check on your sister?”
She glanced at Mirabel.
“No.” She decided, firmly. “I can look after her myself. I’m an adult.”

I guess some brats will soon meet karma
Three down.
~~~~~~
Luisa headed straight back to Casita, almost knocking Mirabel’s door off its hinges in her haste and increasing emotions.
“Holy shit, you could have just knocked,” Isabela said.
Luisa didn’t say anything.
Mirabel, tucked up in bed, wasn’t facing the right way to see her.
Isabela took a few seconds to examine Luisa’s state before putting the dots together.
“Sis, I’m gonna go have lunch, okay?” Isabela said, getting to her feet. “I’ll send Mama and Papa up to see you.”
They didn’t really wait to see Mirabel’s response, not that it would have been any kind of objection. Nor did they really stop to explain to their parents.
~~~~~~
“What were you two thinking? You are lucky nobody is dead!”
Isabela and Luisa now found themselves sat at the dining table, at the mercy of all the adults.
Isabela mouthed ‘snitch’ across the table to Dolores, who pretended she was too busy drinking to notice.
“At least we haven’t forced someone to be an animal we can hunt.” Luisa grumbled.
“And we were never going to kill them. We aren’t stupid.” Isabela added.
“You still went after children—”
“Teenagers, Mama.” Isabela corrected. “They are hardly children. That Mateo is at least eighteen now.”
“Eighteen?” Agustín questioned, alarmed.
“In any case, they are all older than Mirabel.”
“Older!?”
“I don’t care how old they were, Isabela. What you did was unacceptable. And they are still younger than you two.” Julieta cut in. “You should have come to us as soon as you got the names, Luisa. And we could have spoken to their parents and organised a proper punishment.”
Abuela cleared her throat, “As your punishment, you two will be confined to your rooms for the time being. And you are not going to be allowed to visit your sister.”
“Bullshit!”
“What the fuck!?”
“Language!” Julieta snapped at the pair, though neither even glanced at her.
“I know we fucked up and sure, maybe we should be punished, but Mirabel’s in a bad place and she’ll want— no, she’ll need Luisa. You’d be screwing her over.”
Alma raised a hand stopping Isabela short.
“I’ll hear no word of this. You two should have thought about the consequences before you hurt those children.”
She left afterwards.
Dolores, Pepa and Bruno took the opportunity to do the same.
Agustín decided to go check on Mirabel.
Julieta just looked disappointedly at her girls.
“What the fuck is wrong with everyone?” Luisa snapped, pushing away from the table. She stopped over Isabela’s chair. “Thank you, for standing up for me. She’d be upset without you as well though.”
Isabela nodded.
Luisa carried on upstairs.
“Mija? …Did they learn their lesson?”
“Yep. We wouldn’t have let them get away with it.”

Mira, wake up, you cannot die. You got your leg into a trap, not lost your head
“Oh. Apologies. That is my fault, everyone.”

Mirabel’s head was still going in circles. That was the first thing she registered.
The second was the searing pain. Mainly in her right leg, but she could feel it in her ears and neck too - albeit not as intensely.
The third was that said leg was propped up on a cushion, over the purple covers. Luisa’s room, her mind supplied after a beat. When did she get in here? The last thing she remembered was…
Mirabel’s idea of getting away was literally cut short as metal clanged and something stabbed deep into her leg, weighing her down. She screamed.
She covered her mouth with a hand to muffle her cries of agony, well aware that nobody wanted to hear them. Dolores especially.
Between the leaves and twigs and fabric, she saw a glimpse of what had happened to her. An animal trap of some kind. Clamped around her right leg.
She instinctively stumbled to get away, but the trap is completely stuck in her. And it’s heavy, making her drag her right leg like dead weight.
When she continued to squirm anyway, she could feel jagged, metal teeth digging deeper into the limb, ripping away fabric, skin and revealing trenches of gore.
Piercing her flesh, scratching bone and exposing nerves. It’s making her see black spots. As if her vision needed any more reason to be ruined without her glasses. She tries to sit down, but twisting her leg subsequently only puts her in more pain.
After a few attempts of trying to yank her leg free, cutting new wounds as she did, she stopped and tried a new strategy.
She jammed her fingers into where she could, slowly separating the metal. The cool air and release of pressure stung like hell, but she kept going. However, she just isn’t strong enough to counter the force long enough to remove her leg fully. It slips from her grasp back together, creating a new wound underneath the last. Unfortunately catching her ankle in the process.
With a desperate wail, she tried removing it again. This time, it snapped back above the previous two injuries, closer to her kneecap.
That’s when she noticed there were dozens of traps surrounding her. Because of her myopia, she hadn’t noticed them until she was directly on them. She tries to remain as still as possible, terrified of setting another one off. Or worse, altering the others to where she is.
Everything is starting to haze together and she can’t make herself think rationally about what she should do and the tears wouldn’t stop.
A donkey brays.
Did she faint?
She must have done.
“Hermanita?” Mirabel opened her eyes and saw Luisa looking over at her in concern. “You awake? How are you feeling?”
“What happened? Why am I— when did I get here?” Mirabel asked.
“I found you while herding the donkeys. Or, well, one of them did. And I took you back home to find Mama, but she was still out. So Isabela tracked her down for us. Mama fixed your leg and we came back here. Mama thought it best to keep an eye on you, so I took you into my room.” Luisa explained, slowly, giving her time to process. “It’s okay, don’t stress about it. You were in and out of it a lot, it’s normal for you to be confused. Do you want to talk about it?”
Mirabel shook her head, instantly regretting it. “No. Not right now, please?”
Luisa wasn’t sure if Mirabel remembered that she had already told her or not, but if she didn’t want to talk about it right now, fair enough.
“Thank you for helping me,” Mirabel goes on to say. “And I’m sorry. I should have been able to handle myself.”
“You don’t need to apologise. You didn’t do anything wrong, Mira. You were hurt.”
Mirabel bit the inside of her cheek.
Luisa sighed, gently. “How are you feeling now?”
She shivered, though she tried and definitely failed to hide it.
Luisa pulled out another blanket from under the bed and draped it over them, before pulling Mirabel close against her. She was so warm, she couldn’t help snuggling into her sister.
“It hurts so much.”
“I know. Do you want me to get Mama?”
“No, thank you. I’m sorry. I feel too sick to eat or drink anything.”
“That’s okay, you don’t have to. I can just distract you from the pain.”
Mirabel raised an eyebrow, unconvinced.
Luisa smirked. She picked up a book from her bedside table. A Christmas Carol.
“I raided one of your many bookshelves, while trying to find your spare pair of glasses—”
“Oh, Pa broke them on accident two weeks ago. I haven’t gone to get a replacement yet.”
“Oh yeah, shit... I forgot about that. Anyways, I raided one of your bookshelves and picked out this. I thought you could read to me, like old times?” Then, she added teasingly, “Or I can read to you. So long as you promise to help me with the tricky words?”
Mirabel closed her eyes, relaxing a little. “Will you read it sensibly, Lu?”
“Pft. No. I picked Charles Dickens, I mean yeah, he’s one of your favourite fiction authors, but also because I need to then do the accent and give each character a different voice.”
“You don’t need to. You can just stick to one—”
“No, I’m doing it.”

So, how things will go next after Isabela managed to hold back Luisa?
Who said she managed?
Warning, potentially sensitive topics below.
~~~~~~
Luisa snarled down at her cousin. “Don’t you ever—”
She paused, interrupted by a wail from outside. Antonio and Isabela turned expectantly but neither could see; Camilo was too busy crying himself; and Dolores still hadn’t really moved, her eyes did shift to the sound.
Instantly, Luisa tore herself from the vines, making Isabela hiss in pain at the action.
However, rather than continue beating the teenager, she stormed out of the room as quickly as she came in.
“Shit,” Isabela muttered under her breath.
She glanced once at Camilo, then her other cousins, and then where Luisa had ran off too.
She ran to Dolores’ side, shaking her shoulder. “Prima? Dolores! Dolores, for fuck’s sake! Get ahold of yourself.” Not getting a quick enough response, she moved on. “Antonio? Go upstairs, please. Go find Tío Bruno.”
Antonio seemed just as shaken as his sister, fortunately Parce took control over the boy, as though he understood the command.
With the boy gone and presumably on his way to an adult, and Dolores finally started to move to help Camilo, Isabela propelled herself as fast as she could after her sister.
She ran through the kitchen and the courtyard with no sign. She’d hoped to have ran into her mother too, it was wishful thinking that she’d be back from town already. Or any of the adults. This was ridiculous. Why were they all gone at once?
“Casita!” She yelled, breathless. “Casita, where’s Luisa?”
The shutters fluttered, opening and pointing to the back door. It was open a bit. Like someone hadn’t cared enough to close it.
Isabela kicked the door open, instantly finding her target.
Luisa was sat just off from the patio with Mirabel sprawled out in her lap.
There is a metal trap clamped around Mirabel’s leg, shredding her dress and skin, coated red that pools around them. There is red dripping down from her earlobes too where two yellow tags are slotted in place of earrings - with big block numbers ‘320’.
Isabela stops short, as Luisa tentatively touches Mirabel’s leg with a shaky hand.
Her fingers come back red. Dark red.
It’s blood.
So much fucking blood.
Luisa goes on to jabbing her fingers into wherever she could on Mirabel’s leg in between the metallic teeth and pulling them apart, strength allowing her to snap and break the metal with ease.
Mirabel wails again in disgust and agony. She doesn’t get to say anything as a ripple of pain sears through her body and she curls up tighter, whimpering.
“You’re going to be okay, hermanita,” Luisa says. “Can you stand?”
Mirabel very clearly didn’t want to move at all, but she hauled herself up as soon as the question came. Luisa, who had probably realised a second too late, scooped the girl up into her arms.
In spite of her condition, Mirabel whined and tried to let herself down. “Luisa, it’s fine. I can walk myself and there is bandages inside.”
“No, you’re going to straight to Mama.”
“I wouldn’t want to bother anyone—”
“Mirabel Teresa Rojas Madrigal, it is not up for debate.” Luisa snapped. Her anger slipping out to the wrong person.
