Ting! Ting! Ting!

Your hands carry the hot bowl of food toward the forgery, each step shakier than the last. It's the least you can do, you muse, thinking of the offering in a way that belies repayment.

Before you acknowledge Draken, you notice the other smelters have gone home, leaving him as the only one in the forgery. Despite this, the man stands with soot all over his frame.

"Draken," you call out, and you catch his attention, albeit not without catching him off guard. Draken's hammer falls to the ground, narrowly missing his toes. You yelp, but Draken just side-steps the item and pauses in his smithing.

"What's this?" he wonders, frowning.

"D-dinner." The bowl is uncovered by nimble fingers, and you hold it out, watching the steam of the still-warm food waft into the air. Draken takes a step forward, his eyes glazing over at the sight of chicken and vegetables waiting for him.

"You are too kind," he whispers, still not moving to take the offering. "But I must finish my work here."

"Take a break," you urge him, holding the food out once more. "You need to rest for a moment. Regain your strength." Draken relents, looking at the blade briefly before turning back to you.

"Just for a moment, then. You've brought me a meal." His mouth turns up in a smile. "How could I refuse?"

Strong hands clear a cluttered table, and you sit the food in front of him dutifully. Before he can open his mouth to eat, you take your apron and turn his face toward you.

"Don't sully a good meal with all of this soot," you chastise, wiping his face carefully. Draken closes his dark eyes and lets you work, clearing his skin from the blemishes of the fire in stillness. "There." You let his face go, but he captures your hand, eyes still closed. He kisses your palm with reverence as if you were a saint, then opens his eyes.

"Thank you, y/n." You sit across from him as he consumes the meal, your palm still tingling as it rests in your lap. when he is almost finished, you open your mouth to ask a question you could not seem to find an answer to.

"Why me?" you whisper in the near-quiet. Draken looks up at you, face screwed up in concentration.

"Why not you?" he replies, leaning back in the chair and sighing.

"I'm serious," you begin. "You could have chosen the jarl's own kin as your wife and yet..."

"And yet..." Draken bites his bottom lip, still staring. "I chose you."

"Please do not say you pity me."

"Never."

"Then why?" Draken stands from the chair, clearing his throat and pushing the bowl back to you.

"Why, indeed."

"I am prepared to stay here all night until you give me an answer."

"Eat," Draken encourages you, picking the hammer off the floor. "You gave me your food. I saved you the best for last." You're not sure how he knew, but your hands dip into the food anyways. "And if you stay," he continues. "Once this is all over, I will tell you."

You commit to your word, finding a comfortable seat in some hay while he continues to smith the sword. You watch his muscles move in the dim lighting of the forgery, each sinew of his arms and torso bracing for the clang of metal against metal.

And somehow, you find yourself drifting off to the rhythmic clanging, each blow a bell toll to keep count before you slip into the darkness. You're half-in-half-out of sleep when Draken approaches you, lays a blanket over your tired frame, and touches your cheek thoughtfully. Your last vision is of him walking back to his station, hammer raised to strike the sword once more.

You've never seen a man so angry before.

But the muscles in the jarl's face seem to bulge and ripple with each turn of the sword.

"With your permission, my lord," a thrall whispers. "I have seen the blade myself and inspected it closely. It is as you required it." You straighten your spine. Now, the jarl must give in to Draken's request. He had done what he had asked.

"One last task," the jarl snaps, holding his hand high. "You will challenge me to a duel. The first to draw blood will win." Rage blinds you to decorum.

"He has done all you asked!" you shout, blood rushing to your head. "Impossible tasks, and--" The sharp sting of a slap against your face is earned. You taste blood in your mouth and stumble back, touching your cheek in surprise.

Draken comes to his feet instantly, gripping the table with all his might. His knuckles turn deathly white as he prevents himself from launching across the table and attacking the most powerful man for miles. Don't, you want to beg Draken. Please. Anything but that.

"Agreed," Draken finally chokes out. "I agree to your terms."

But the jarl is still glaring at you, his breathing ragged. "You will regret speaking out like this," he grumbles, turning away from you and leaving you in the hall with the crowd too stunned to speak.

"Are you hurt?" Draken wonders, coming to your side as soon as the jarl has gone. You inhale sharply, holding your cheek in one hand while looking away.

"I deserved that."

"No," Draken breathes, turning your face toward him carefully. "No, you spoke only truth."

"I'm sorry," you rasp, and Draken raises his hand to wipe away a stray tear. "I'm so sorry."

"It's alright," he replies. "This will all be over soon. Just hold on." You nod, sniffing as he presses a gentle kiss to your forehead. People are still watching, though many have left, having their fill of the drama for the evening. "Hold on for me."
