After completing the NC500 in our Quirky-campers hired camper van we decided that van-life was for us. We loved it, so we purchased our own van to convert into an all singing all dancing camper of our dreams!

Hi there!! So uh, i was wondering (as a baby punk/goth) if you have any suggestions as to how to subtly dress more punk?? I would love to go full out with it, but i couldn’t without getting into an argument, so if you have any tips, let me know :] thank you!!

Ideas for subtly adding alternative elements to outfits:

Safety pins. Add them any and everywhere. I have them on the lapels of almost every jacket I own, and up the back of a pair of converse (possibly being used to keep said pair of converse together). But adding them to bags or as earrings (or hanging from earrings) works just as well!

Band t shirts. You can buy them anywhere and pair them with anything. Simply jeans and a band t shirt are fairly common even for non-alt people

Start adding some black and other dark elements to your outfits. Even if its just a black friendship bracelet. Maybe it has beads on it that spell out a band name?

Learn how to do simple sewing and mending. The more times something is repaired, the cooler it looks in my opinion. AND thats something that is honestly a life skill and everyone should be able to do if they are physically able

Ladder lace your shoes (I have a how to here), its subtle but can tell someone who knows what they are looking for a lot

Ripped jeans are in fashion. Just make your own out of an old pair, it will look more alt and be cheaper. And you can tell your parents that you were just saving money and making ‘cooler jeans than the people who get them pre-ripped’ should work cause a lot of older people seem to have beef with pre-ripped jeans

Go just a *little* heavier on the eye make up (but not so much you get in trouble). And if anyone says anything about it, there are plenty of more mainstream artists you can say you drew inspiration from (Kiss, Mick Jagger, Prince, David Bowie. All musicians that parents are likely to have listened to)

Choose boots, converse, or vans over other options if you have the choice. Other options are fine (and probably cheaper unless you thrift them) but it’s undeniable that those shoes are staples of alt fashion

Simple chain necklace. Get it from a craft store. Its small, its subtle, it can be hidden under your shirt

If you or your family is religious (specifically christian here), get a stylized cross to wear. I have a cool looking metal one made out of nails. You could always claim that it represents something about Jesus’ suffering or something

DIY in general, even if it doesn’t look punk/alt. The fact that it was DIY basically makes it punk/alt

I’m not Goth, nor do I know *much* about Goth fashion, BUT, I think lace is pretty common? And not exclusive to alt spaces, soo you can just say you think its pretty

I have a question concerning those giant rubber / combat boots I see often on alt fashion girlies. Are there cheap alternatives for the nonsense on Dollskill or whatever?

So I’m assuming your talking about platforms and the answer is yes but also no. Brand new platforms are expensive, and while I think shoes are good investment pieces bc you can wear them with anything (I have a pair of demonias I rly love that I was gifted) I understand not everyone has the time or money to save up for stuff.

You can always check online thrift stores (Depop, Mercado, Vinted, eBay, etc) for used platforms bc those will be much cheaper than buying a new pair.

I’ve definitely seen people DIY their own platforms but simply getting thrifted boots (or even vans/converse) and basically glueing flip flops together and making a sort of big platform block out of duck tape and glue and then decorating to your hearts content.

a basic breakdown of emo, punk, and goth— a character resource for writers and artists by someone who is emo :] (under the cut!!)

the most important thing: emo, punk, and goth are all music-based subcultures. you cannot be a part of the subculture without listening to the music.

this is a basic guide and won't be going into subgenres (like screamo, hardcore, etc etc). this is what this guide covers:

the five waves of emo (with a focus on midwestern emo and 2000s emo) and emo fashion

punk rock and punk fashion

gothic rock and traditional goth fashion

i've listened to the majority of bands and songs i mention here!

i'm going based off what i know, so if any info is incorrect, please lmk!! :]

emotional hardcore (emocore or just emo) formed in the mid 1980s from post-hardcore and hardcore punk

there are five waves of emo music (w/ bands):

1st wave (1980s) - rites of spring 2nd wave (1990s) - the get up kids, cap’n jazz, american football 3rd wave (2000s) - my chemical romance, paramore, fall out boy 4th wave (2010s) - the world is a beautiful place & i am no longer afraid to die, the front bottoms, you blew it! 5th wave (2020s) - home is where

specific songs to listen to:

1st wave: for want of by rites of spring

2nd wave: oh messy life by cap'n jazz

3rd wave: thank you for the venom by my chemical romance

4th wave: match & tinder by you blew it!

5th wave: yes! yes! a thousand times yes! by home is where

midwestern emo fashion vs. 2000s emo fashion

midwestern emo: its hard to find any pictures, so i’m going based off of pictures i was able to find, as well as an explanation by madeline pendleton (an alternative content creator who was a part of the subculture during the 90s).

looking at pictures, denim jeans, striped sweaters, and plaid jackets were popular. very classic loser/nerd vibe.

according to madeline pendleton: black dyed spock rock cuts or karen cuts were popular. clothes: low rise flare jeans, small banti shirts, plaid cowboy snap ups, track jackets, and white collared shirts with ties. accessories and shoes: flower clips, white belts buckled to the side, cowboy hats, low top converse, and saucony jazzes. eyeliner was also common. her video with pictures!

2000s emo: 2000s emo often features choppy, jet black or colourful dyed hair, band tees, studded belts, stripes (especially black and white stripes on arm warmers), spikes, checkers, kandi bracelets, black jeans, and shoes like converse, vans, and doc martens. the fashion is similar to scene. however, scene and 2000s emo aren't the same thing, because scene has different music (and emo has a darker aesthetic overall).

punk

punk rock (or just punk) formed in the mid 1970s from garage rock

a counterculture; rebels against the mainstream. punks are non-conformists

very politically-driven subculture— generally left leaning, acab, anti-establishment, anti-capitalism, and value individual freedom

punk has a diy ethic (a lot of punk fashion is made of readily available materials that the wearer customizes with things like patches, studs, spikes, paint, etc etc)

several subgenres (anarcho-punk, horror punk, hardcore punk, queercore, riot grrrl, etc etc)

punk bands: sex pistols, dead kennedys, the clash, the misfits, x-ray spex, green day

london calling by the clash

art-i-ficial by x-ray spex

punk fashion

punk fashion often features safety pins, patches, spikes, studs, and chains as accessories. leather and denim are common materials for jackets. common hairstyles include mohawks and liberty spikes. many punk outfits are made out of readily available clothes that are accessorized or altered by the wearer. (hence punk's diy ethic)

gothic rock (or just goth) formed in the late 1970s from post-punk

several fashion types (trad goth, victorian goth, mall goth, cyber goth, etc etc)

goth bands: the cure, sisters of mercy, switchblade symphony, bauhaus, depeche mode, skeletal family

disintegration by the cure

dominion by sisters of mercy

traditional goth fashion

traditional goth fashion mostly uses black and white in its look. the makeup generally consists of white foundation with thin eyebrows, black lipstick, and heavy black eyeliner. hair is teased and worn up. fishnets, lace, flowy dresses, leather jackets, chains, spikes, studs, crosses, and corsets are common clothing and accessories.

a/n: I have to wait two weeks for my exam results, I am too lazy to do work and I have an unhealthy shoe addiction. Put 'em together and you get this. This is just for fun and my opinion/hcs, so please don't take it seriously. Also, I didn't really look closely at their canon shoes for this, I feel like that must be said. In this post, I will be roasting some shoes. Again, this is just my opinion and it's totally okay if you do like them.

he also has this ancient pair of high-top dress shoes he rarely wears anymore

honestly doesn't own many shoes, but the ones he does own are made of high-quality material so they can last long

Mammon

the closest thing to a formal shoe he owns are combat boots

he owns a pair of fake jordans, but tells everyone they are the real, expensive thing and will argue with whoever claims they are fakes

also for some reason I see him wearing vans, but not the ordinary black ones

gucci slides, he brought the real ones but lost them so he went on akuzon and got dupes but the second the dupes arrived he found the real ones again, so mammon decided to throw the fakes out but he made a mistake and threw one fake and one real one away

Leviathan

I'm so sorry, levi stans

he buys 99% of shoes on akuzon, so when he bought the jordans for 20 grimm, he still thinks they're the real deal

levi owns a pair of those water shoes for some reason, and proudly wears them in a jacuzzi

he also thinks the water shoes count as formal wear

he owns flip flops in multiple colors and wears them when it is hot, with gym shorts.

Satan

look me in the eye and tell me satan doesn't wear converse

he has this pair of old hiking boots but he replaced them with timbs after the sole fell off
