Patch update: I made a big sunflower patch out of an old potholder
Here's the before, when i took apart the potholder:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There were large holes in two opposite corners. The side with the black and white dots will be a separate piece I'll use in the future. In the bottom image I used a white background so the holes can be seen more clearly
And here's the finished patch:

I hemmed the edges, and I stitched the sunflower fabric to a patch of rusty orange fabric for extra strength and so I could mend the holes easier. I mended them by stitching the frayed edges to the orange fabric in the back. Anything can be a patch
[Image ID: the first four images are of a potholder that I took apart so it's just two large patches of fabric. About the size of a potholder. 7 inches by 8 inches. One side has a large sunflower on a white background with black dots. It's old and stained. The other piece is just covered in green leaves and smaller yellow sunflowers, with two large rips in the top right and bottom left of the patch. In the third image I put two white circles to highlight them because it's on a cardboard background, and the last image they're a bit clearer over the white background.
In the after photos, the second piece of fabric from the other pictures is hemmed and stitched to a slightly desaturated orange fabric with green thread the exact same shade of green as the leaves in the pattern. The second image is of the patch turned around to show the orange side. And with that green thread I stitched down the edges of the holes to the orange piece which is shown closer in the last two images. End ID]

If some of you don’t understand why I’m so passionate about helping people understand the DIY and anti-consumerist themes of alternative fashion it’s because I just read an article about punk fashion that had a section dedicated to “shopping some of our punk favorites” that included a $53 pair of fishnet tights
I get my fishnets from the dollar store, I make jewelry out of safety pins and soda tablets cans, I buy “normal” looking clothing at thrift stores and cut it and sew it and wear it so it fits with my style. That’s what it’s about. When punks, goths, emos, scene kids, etc tell you that dressing this way should be cheap it’s because it IS. Don’t let big corporations tell you otherwise

if you’re looking for a cool new punk band to listen to, i highly recommend looking for local small bands before searching “punk” into spotify.
don’t know how to find them?
what i did is i looked up what some punk bars in my area, i started going on random nights and found bands i liked that way. (if you’re under 21, you can still look up the bars, but go to their instagram, see what bands are playing and see if they are on band camp, spotify, etc.)
this has worked amazing for me, i’ve made so many friends, it’s to the point where certain bands shows feel like monthly family reunions full of so much love and genuine compassion.
hope this helps anyone wanting to be more involved in the subculture
EDIT: if you live in a small town, just search the nearest big city. or honestly any city that you vibe with. every area has a slightly different sound and scene find what you blend with!!

fyi punk should be diy. if any of my followers wanna dress punk but feel like they cant because its expensive, here's the secret: a good punk look can and should be made out of literal junk. old bottle caps, safety pins. i recently asked my sister if she'd give me some spare key rings so i could join them up with mine and make a longer chain (its attached to my favorite pair of pants rn). if something doesnt feel shiny and pointy and punk enough, stab it with some safety pins. make your own patches out of spare fabric scraps. cut the logos and patterns off of shirts and turn them into patches. pick up some cheap basic embroidery stuff (thread, needle, bamboo ring, thats all you need--hell you dont even need the ring its just helpful) to sew your patches on & make some of your own. or just embroider right on your clothes! it doesnt have to look good. most real punk patches are self-made with wonky lettering. you can get a good leather jacket, denim jacket, vest, etc at your local thrift store. you can try chains like savers and you can try non-chain shops. (btw thrift shops arent just for clothes, theyre lifesavers in general. i got my favorite table for $15 at savers. its old and ornate with carved designs and shit. please shop at thrift stores theyre the best thing ever.) also, when i was younger i remember i made my own spiky bracelets out of studded ribbon (cheap, get it at joanns or some other fabric or crafts store) and safety pins to hold it together. dont waste money on fucking hot topic. you can make your own shit. thats what punk is all about. i promise anyone judging you for having handmade punk clothes and accessories is a fucking poser.

DIY Bat Shoe Wings made with duct tape, scissors, white pen, and pen knife.
Make a big sheet of duct tape by laying it out and making sure the creases face different ways so its less flimsy.
Then use white pen to draw out your bat wings template. Use your shoes to mark out the holes. Then cut out the holes with a pen knife and check if they fit. Wipe off pen with a lil acetone and qtip. Lace onto your shoes and ur good to go!

Lance, 22
“I've got some fishnets I cut into sleeves, an old shirt I flipped inside out and painted on, and a jacket my grandpa got me ages ago that I decked out and took the sleeves off of. My pants are from my friend. Originally they were plain black with significantly less holes but when I learnt about patch and crust pants I was like ’I want to do something very Lance with these’ so any old clothes that didn't fit I cut up and made it to patches or I bought some patches. What inspires my style is the punk subculture! Regardless of what's happened to it over the years, at its core it's very individualistic in terms of self expression. With each person that falls in love with punk mindset/ideologies you get a new perspective on what punk can look like. It's a look that's very familiar because you can spot it from a mile away but it's also very eccentric because there's no one specific way to do it. The lot of it is just do it yourself and do it you!”
