why the hugheses wear the numbers they do
a lot of people tend to be curious why the Hughes brothers wear 43 and 86, and I wanted to do a small dive into why.
So where does 43 come from? First we need to start with the number 6. Jack once said, "No. 6 is the family number. Everyone has worn it: uncles, aunts, cousins, brothers" and Luke has said he wore 6 because his brothers and dad wore it. And it seems that before they entered the NHL, it was their preferred number. With that background done with, let's move back to 43.
According to Quinn, the first of the brothers to wear No. 43, he chose it while he was playing for the U17 NTDP team; "Going into my U17 year, I was always had No. 6 so I didn’t really know what to pick (between 30 and 60) and there wasn’t much for me to go with so I just went with 43 and I liked it and just stuck with it." The next year, when he was on the U18 team he went back to 6. Then when he went to UMich a senior had No. 6, and as a frosh he wasn't going to ask him to switch, so he went back to 43, really liked it and feels like "that's [his] number now," and obviously kept it when he signed with the Canucks.
When Jack entered the program Quinn passed 43 onto him. Apparently, the night Jack was drafted by the Devils, he saw a No. 43 Devils jersey with his name on it. But he chose to wear No. 86 because similar to Quinn, 6 was already taken by a senior member of the team. In this case that member was Andy Greene, the then captain of the Devils. Something that a lot of people like to point out is that 86 is a double of 43 and believe that's why Jack chose 86. In this article, Jack says he chose 86 because he previously wore it when he was with the Marlboros.
Luke, like his brothers before did, wore 43 while on the U17 team, 6 while on the U18 team, and 43 while he was at UMich. In his words, "I always wore #6 because my brothers and my dad wore it and then #43 because both my brothers came through the program and wore it."
So there you have it, that's why the Hugheses wear 43 and 86.
Tumblr media
As an aside, contrary to popular belief, the number 43 did not come from their mom, Ellen. As for what number Ellen wore, I could only find that she had No. 5 while she played in the 1992 IIHF Women's World Championships, 21 while she was with UNH and 22 when she played as a kid in Dallas.

TL;DR my homeless friend is in desperate need of help -
I have a post up already about this but I'm trying all my options here so here's a shorter post. My friend Chris is in a dire situation. He's homeless, disabled, sleeping in a car in the woods, barely surviving. I set up a GoFundMe for him with more of his story and have an Amazon wishlist for anyone who wants to help. If you can't donate, sharing this post would mean a lot. It might honestly save a life. Thank you.

2005 GMC Savana Van
I recently purchased a 2005 GMC Savana and I have 2 issues that I'm trying to work out on it.
I turn the key and it does nothing, not even a click. I got a new starter relay- nothing. BUT I wrapped copper wire around the old starter relay and I can jump it off with that and it starts right up.
The alternator went out. I just got the new one in so I will be replacing that this week.
Could these two problems go hand in hand? Also I have a new starter to replace as well, just to cover all bases. Is there anything else I could be looking for? Battery is brand new and I have new spark plugs and plug wires on the way as well.
Please advise!

This Guide Will Help You Select The Ideal Van-Life Vehicle That Is Right For You
Tumblr media
It's known as "van-life", "overlanding" or whatever you prefer. I've been doing this since the days when it was known simply as "living in your car." Over the course of many years and thousands of miles, I've learned what it takes to find a car you love. If you know what you want to search for, vans, SUVs and pickups can all be modified to fit the road-trip lifestyle.
Your daily life as a van driver will be influenced by the vehicle you choose to convert. The comfort, the volume of cargo you can carry, your day-to-day cost of living, even the likelihood of being pulled up by Karens or police officers--all are affected by your choice of vehicle.
If budget isn't a problem purchasing a van that is ready for life is, of course an easy task. Many companies now provide vans designed for endless road-tripping. But they aren't cheap. Even if they are used, for instance the popular Mercedes Sprinter will run you up to $35,000. Buy new and the sky is the limit.
We're not talking about the pre-made overlanders. Instead, I'm writing to the DIYers out there Many of them are probably working with the confines of a budget. If that's you, then let's get rolling.
Size and shape
The first thing you should consider when attempting to construct a home on wheels is how much area you'll be working with. The more room you have, the more space you'll have. On the other hand If you're living too large, you'll end up spending every penny for gas to transport the huge rig around.
It is important to strike the right equilibrium between how much space you can fit in and how little. While you might want the spacious panel van, you won't need to drive 14 miles per gallon for your car. A hatchback could be too small for long trips than weekenders, so you will need something with more elbow room.
Certain models also offer body shapes that are better to be converted. Certain SUVs may appear spacious initially, but as you begin building, you might discover that awkward angles or a small top can make it difficult to design an ergonomic camper arrangement. The more bigger the box, the better.
This is why I went with a Honda Element. While it's theoretically identical to a Honda CRV and Subaru Forester The Element is a large box when the seats are taken off. It is much more adaptable than other mid-sized SUVs. For the same reason, minivans are seeing a surge in sales to aftermarket. There's plenty of room for your family when you eliminate the child-friendly seats.
The gas mileage
youtube
While the cost of gas is always a major factor, it's now vital in the age of the six-buck-gallons. If you're embracing life on the road and paying your rent (or mortgage, if you're over 50) at the pump. A high MPG can make it impossible to live an ordinary life. It is likely that this is the reason you'll see increasing numbers of people choosing smaller SUVs rather than big vans these days.
Handling and capability
In my set-up, traveled more than 40,000 miles across North America last year. This covered all weather conditions and roads. Off-roading in Moab. Blizzards in Oregon, Idaho. Rural Mexico has bedraggled roads. Numerous rainstorms and hairpin mountain passes have been recorded. One tornado could have been in Colorado.
Overlanding isn't unusual for these kinds of driving situations. There are a lot of van conversions bouncing across the hardtop just outside Vegas, inching their way through a Pendleton snowstorm in winter's chilly temperatures, or attempting mucky dirt roads through the backcountry of Northern California.
In essence, you need the vehicle to be capable of handling the most severe road (or off-road) conditions you're likely to throw at it. The all-wheel drive feature in my Honda Element trim made it an ideal vehicle. Other reliable vehicles that you'll frequently encounter in the van-life scene include the Ford Transit, Subaru Forester, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Toyota 4Runner.
Reliability and the condition
The most obvious reason for looking for a car that's in good condition involves the human desire to ensure that you don't get a car that is broken down in the middle of the road, but an efficient conversion could have more ramifications.
Van-life was a new trend prior to the year 2020. It gained popularity because of the pandemic. Many people were looking for other travel options. Van conversions are now observed everywhere, and a lot of people who are not a fan of vans are fed up with the idea. People (or the police) who may not have been a bit irritated by someone parking on their streets for a night's rest a few years back are now much more likely to get up and make you go.
This has led to the growth of "stealth van-lifing" which is the act of parking your vehicle in a suburban or urban area and not attracting the attention of the locals. There are many techniques one can use to accomplish this, however, it all begins with the appearance of the vehicle.

The Purchase Of A Van To Make An Rv Conversion (A Beginner's Guide)
Tumblr media
Find out more about the best car to reside in. If you've got some idea of the van you want to buy, it is time to begin looking! The first step is to start with some general tips, then move on to the process of evaluating the campervan you want to live in.
General Tips When Making the Decision to Buy A Van
Mindset!
The way you think about buying a van is just as crucial as the other aspects of the plan. Each step is important to take a step back and take a look at your overall goals and the big overall picture.
Avoid becoming attached to any particular vehicle. Humans, when we focus all of our attention on a single thing, it can control our thoughts and alter our reality. You may allow "the person" go in the event that you do not act fast enough. However, if you begin your search too quickly you're less likely that you will find the right person.
Be aware that private sellers may not be honest when you are considering used cars.
I'm of the opinion that the majority of people are nice people, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't protect yourself from people trying to sneak up over you.
The biggest thing is to not get frustrated when someone doesn't to a question or meet up with you. If you're getting over 25% of the time this is better than I usually get in the market for used items!
Mileage How many miles are too many?
This issue is too much focus in my opinion! While it is important to have a good mileage, the condition is just as important. A well maintained vehicle at 200K miles will treat you better than 100K miles of driving hard and uncared for. If your car isn't prone to breaking down at a higher mileage then you must follow the regular inspection procedure.
Nevertheless, any vehicle with an annual mileage of 200K or more is an option worth looking at. While older vehicles might require more care, it's uncommon to have fuel pumps, wheel bearings, and other minor repairs. These aren't unforeseen costs and can keep you on the road for a long duration if you budget your money well.
If you're mechanically inclined you can push that number and If you don't want to handle maintenance go for a certified-used option from a dealership.
Budget
When purchasing a used car we aren't usually a fan of the idea of financing. If you don't have a unique situation in which you are able to make a significant amount of money driving but have to move in a hurry, it makes sense to invest your money with an emergency fund prior to making the decision to commit to a lifestyle.
If you're thinking about financing, you're likely setting the bar too high. Leasing is worse as you should not make any major modifications to a vehicle that you don't already own.
Consider an emergency fund when you're looking at vans. Although there are many opinions on the subject it's important to keep an emergency fund available in the event that something unexpected happens while traveling.
Age of the vehicle
There are several aspects to consider when deciding on the age of the van you want to purchase. Modern vehicles are generally safer all around. More crumple zones, better air bags, and safer breaking systems.
Any vehicle in the US manufactured between 1996 and up will have OBD II, which makes diagnosing easier.
Old vehicles are easier to repair, but they also break more often and generally have longer maintenance intervals. It is possible to get a manual if you are adept at ensuring you are maintaining a high quality of preventative maintenance.
In certain cases older vans can have their own issues.
Rust
This headache is so severe that it deserves its own category. When dealing with body rust, it can cause headaches. The process of removing corrosion is never easy and requires more time than you think.
It's also harder to maintain when you have rust. The hope that you won't break a bolt when changing your shocks can be an additional level of hassle that you're not likely to think about when buying a rusty van. Be cautious when buying rusty vans as it is an issue you are unable to reverse the clock.
Specific issues for vehicles
youtube
If you are deciding on an automobile or one that has caught your eye, you ought to conduct some research on the internet to identify specific issues related to that vehicle's model and year. You'll be amazed by how difficult these problems are to solve if you take a look at the comments posted on forums.
For example, the motors in 1996 Ford are amazing, but in 1997 they switched to the Triton motor, which could blast spark plugs.
Re-sale value
Should you think about re-sales cost to finance your construction? We believe that any additional money you intend to make on top of the conversion should not be considered into consideration as part of the construction project.
For those who only want to reside in a van for an entire year or so, we like to consider the van as an affordable extended vacation expense. If you want to stay permanently in a van, it shouldn't be the top item on your priority list.
Vehicle Inspection
It's understandable that this can be intimidating, especially if it's your first time buying from a private vendor. Be aware that at any point of the process, if feel uncomfortable, it's completely acceptable to get out of the way and start again in a new vehicle.

I know there's not many of you following here but for those of you who are, I'm sorry I disappeared for so long, life has been extremely overwhelming lately. I have updates and they're not very good. Still trying to wrap my head around what has happened. This isn't even an emergency anymore, this is genuinely life or death. Chris was attacked by another homeless man and was nearly killed. I don't even know what to say, this still doesn't feel real. He lost all of his front teeth and his nose was broken. I'll make another post when I feel a little more coherent and stable. I'm still reeling over all of this.
