About the chapter 37...

At the moment, I am unable to read the new comments I received, first from Siobhan68, when the story had not been updated for practically a year, and later from Cyberwolf0_replicant on chapter 36.

This is not because of some technical issue, but because I struggle to get back to interacting with readers.

But the approaching date of March 9, Adam's birthday, always makes me think of this story, which I started writing after years and years of not writing. After the death of several relatives from 2010 onward, especially my mother's death from cancer in 2014. Also, on July 14, 2023, my dog Febo passed away, because he was old and because he had cancer as well. He was the dog that my mother had wanted shortly after finding out about her lung cancer (and after the death in 2010 of my mother's sister, that is, my aunt.)

The absurd and embarrassing thing is that I started suffering from panic attacks not after all these griefs, but after realizing that despite the effort put into the creation of Deus Ex War Paint, my fanfiction is enjoyed by very few readers, practically counted on the fingers of one hand.

This is nobody's fault, neither mine nor those who rightly have their own preferences. I just feel sorry for the few readers who are waiting for this fanfiction updates.

I will continue to update the story at least until the chapter completed so far, chapter 44, but after that, I don't know how it will go.

Adam and Selene's story extends to the earthquake that will occur in the saga timeline in 2030.

Selene will make the acquaintance of Megan Reed, Adam's parents and Alex Vega, but also of Bob Page, Gunther Hermann, Madame Photographe, Janus and many other characters such as Dr. Tiffany Kavanagh and Dr. Gary Savage.

Deus Ex War Paint is, to be fair, divided into acts. The first act begins with the first chapter and ends with Adam's mission with TF29 in chapter 16. The second act picks up from chapter 17 until chapter 34, the first kiss between Adam and Selene. The third act continues with chapter 35, Damian's death, and will definitely lead to what I have in mind for the 2030 earthquake. And it will probably all end in the fourth act, which may be the shortest, although broadly speaking I have assumed that Deus Ex War Paint will have approximately 65 chapters.

Maybe part of me is hoping that this post will inspire other readers to start the story or pick up where they left off. Or it is simply a long stream of consciousness in which I in turn make my own mind up about the future events of Deus Ex War Paint.

In any case, my final point in this regard is that I must have underestimated the weight Damian's death had on me, and dealing with Selene's death of a loved one is probably something I was not really prepared for.

Because the path to which Selene has just entered is far from idyllic.

I love the original TFP dub but I also dig the Japanese version! I often enjoy comparing the differences between them!

A lot of popular voice actors in Japan participate in the show. Some of them even did voices in the “BEAST WARS” series, which had a big fanbase in my country.

The biggest difference between the original and the Japanese version is that the latter makes a few adjustments to the characters to make them more distinctive and child-friendly. They even added some comical lines that weren’t in the original to make it more mild and relatable for children. Because the original had some pretty serious moments. So in the Japanese version, Starscream and Airachnid turned out to be the funniest characters…

Similarly, “BEAST WARS” also underwent some comical changes for similar reasons. And because of that, the show was a hit with Japanese kids back in the day. So in TFP, I'd say they also gave a nod to fans who grew up watching it.

But as you can imagine, these changes have divided opinions among fans in Japan. Tbh, I understand how both of them feel about it because I love the original vibes! That being said, the Japanese dub has a lot of adorable moments that don’t exist in the original version! Let me pick up MY BOY BREAKDOWN as an example!!!!

He has a funny childish demeanor and talks more than in the original dub. His favorite phrase is “壊すの大好き!(I love breaking things!)”

In “Deus Ex Machina,” the episode of his first appearance, he says, “あーーーごめーーーーん！！(AAAHHH I’M SOOOORYYYYYY!!!)” to Knock Out when he accidentally hits his partner's face with his hammer!

In the next episode, “Speed Metal,” when Starscream scratches Knock Out’s paint as a punishment, Breakdown breaks the fourth wall and speaks to kids in front of the TV, saying “みんなぁ！ いじめはダメだぞぉ！(HEY YOU GUYS!! BULLYING IS WRONG!!)” AWW IT'S SO ADORABLE!! HES 100% A NICE GUY lmao

And surprisingly, he even sings a song sometimes... If you don't believe me, please check out “T.M.I” and “Operation Bumblebee part 2” 🥺

And Our Knock Out is even more of a narcissist than in the original. He always praises himself for how beautiful he is. He usually uses polite Japanese when talking to others, but sometimes he talks to Breakdown casually! I love how the difference in his behavior signifies that Breakdown is special to him as a friend! ( ꈍᴗꈍ) <3

In addition, the voices of Optimus and Megatron both sound younger than in the original! On the other hand, Bulkhead sounds older than in the English version. That's interesting! Oh, and did you know? Wheeljack speaks just like a samurai! This change is probably due to his two-sword style.

I especially love Japanese Ratchet. The voice actor is Nobuo Tobita, who has played many TF characters until now. His voice is really soft and gentle! Besides, he also voiced Scourge in Rise of the Beasts! Wow, he has a wide range of acting! I’m a long-time fan of his!

Oh, speaking of ROTB, let me mention Japanese Mirage’s voice actor, Shingo Fujimori! He’s a famous comedian, and his comedy style is acting like a player and a party person (or someone like that… it’s difficult to explain). He shouts things like “YOOO! GIRL, YOU’RE SO PURDYYY!” So he really fits the character of Mirage!

Oh! And you listened to “TRANSFORMERZ” by M-flo? I like the song too! The original opening theme of TFP is magnificent, so you all might be surprised at the gap between them, but such an anime style is not bad, right? It's interesting how we find different styles in different countries!Unfortunately, the show was only broadcast in Japan up to seasons 2. I wish I could have seen the entire series dubbed in Japanese...😭

Here it is. One end-to-be-all (heh) redesign for the Endministrator. It'll be 2024 at its earliest when Endfield is released, choosing within the 'gender binary' is outdated. I also tried to make them look more like an actual adult?

Before I break it down, let me get down to my concept a little bit. Now, the description of the Endministrator in the tweet is actually quite Mary-Sueish: mysterious character, no one knows much about them, the only thing people do know about them is their ability to single-handedly turn the tide of battle, and that for certain plot reasons, they have been locked into their cryo-chamber similarly to the Doctor.

Now I was thinking a bit on how to work with such a Mary Sue-ish description and then it happened to me. What if someone who seems so good and OP and pure...has skeletons in the closet? What if they are painted like an angel, but might have inner demons no one knows about? You know, like any other non-Mary Sue... And so I began.

The coat that the masculine and feminine Endministrator wear, isn't white. The one of the masculine Endministrator fades into grey and the feminine Endministrator's coat seems to be an even darker kind of grey. The feminine Endministrator's coat also flares out, much like a dress...and her sweater also lacks the grey part under it so that we can all stare at those legs because she has skin tights that he lacks.

That aside...I was intrigued about how both the Endministrator and the Doctor aren't dressed in white. I mean, Theresa (a figure known as a war-stopping all-pure paeon of light) dresses in all white. I took this bit and worked with it.

The Endministrator's coat starts out as light grey, then ends in black. It would make you think: if they're all good, then why do they seem more like a stereotypical bad guy, hiding their eyes and all? Also, with the stopping war thing - I can imagine that they would suddenly appear, all Deus Ex Machina you know, floating down from the sky like an angel, accompanied with a beam of light...but with such attire. At that point though you'd be happy for whatever came to rescue you, no matter how shady it looks like, knowing this universe's wars.

Their inner coat is actually mostly copied directly from the Doctor's inner coat, and so is their hood. The long sweater was cute, but I wanted some elements to tie back to the Doctor in their design. Their inner coat is also white because despite everything, they still try to do the thing that seems right in their eyes, no matter how Mary Sueish that sounds. But even that white bit is already getting tainted by the light grey at the end. Their gloves however, are already light grey, showing that they may take some morally questionable decisions at some point.

They also wear a grey collar. It may hint at how they, in the end, aren't the sun everything turns around, but merely just a cog in the machine led by others? Whoah! (sarcasm)

Another point of inspiration I took was Ford Pines, specifically the way he was dressed when he emerged from the portal, mostly in the new belt around their inner coat.

Oh and more design-related. I mixed the hairstyles of them both: the side-swept front bang from the masculine Endministrator, and the length of the other bangs from the feminine Endministrator. In my hypothetical, ideal version of Endfield you'd be able to choose your skin and hair color. Just because.

Great Star Trek Rewatch - Enterprise S4

Enterprise Season 4 is up next in my Great Star Trek Rewatch. As in Seasons 1-3, mini-reviews will document my progress.

Storm Front: Nazis in New York, aliens up to no good, a time-ravaged Daniels, and the unforgettable sight of P-51 Mustangs firing on a shuttlepod = a slam-bang season premiere. Alicia Travers is a strong guest character. 9/10

Storm Front, Part II: The Temporal Cold War comes to an end, and so does Silik. The NX-01 shooting down Stukas over Manhattan is a highlight, as well as the final shootout in the temporal conduit complex. 10/10

Home: Archer and Erika Hernandez reconnect and recover, and Trip’s unrequited feelings for T’Pol are thrown in his face by her marriage to Koss, THE most insufferable Vulcan in a series full of them. But it’s Phlox’s encounter with casual racism that hits home. 10/10

Borderland: The Augments trilogy kicks off in style. Brent Spiner is a perfect foil for Archer. Malik makes for a complex proto-Khan, while Persis is almost too clever for her own good. 8/10

Cold Station 12: Malik and Soong start to drift apart here. Too bad we couldn't see more of Udar. Alas. The torture scene with the Symbalene blood burn is insane body horror, right up there with "Conspiracy". The pieces have moved into place for the trilogy's climax. 8/10

The Augments: Interesting debate on nature vs. nurture. Persis deserved better, both from Malik and the arc. I think the ending would have had more impact if we saw Soong write something about positronic brains, rather than have him explicitly mention cybernetics. 8/10

The Forge: RIP Adm. Forrest. Deep, deep Vulcan lore is introduced, things only mentioned off-hand or hinted at in the franchise’s previous forty years (including IDIC). Loved seeing T’Pau and Surak again. 8/10

Awakening: Pieces are moved into place as Archer falls further under Surak’s spell (err, katra). V’Las is veering dangerously close to mustache twirling, but Robert Foxworth is too damn charismatic. The Kir’Shara is found, but it may be too late. 9/10

Kir’Shara: The first steps toward the Federation are taken as V’Las’ assault on Andoria is foiled by Enterprise and Shran. The Vulcans begin a re-evolution here. Meanwhile, a certain raptorial species makes a shocking appearance in the tag. 10/10

Daedalus: This one does nothing for me; ergo, I nothing it. What should be a tragic story in the vein of the vastly superior DS9 “The Visitor” is wasted on a paint-by-numbers “ghost story.” Archer’s relationship with the Erickson’s comes out of nowhere. A rare S4 misfire. 4/10

Observer Effect: Non-corporeal aliens possessing our heroes? Check. Lethal infection? Check. Deus ex machina? Check. But the last-minute reveal that the Organians from the sublime TOS “Errand of Mercy” are the culprits is a great twist that wasn’t telegraphed. 7/10

Babel One: The Tellarites attack and destroy Shran’s ship…or did they? The Andorians attack Enterprise…or did they? Some amazing groundwork is being laid here for not only the rest of S4 but the entire Star Trek universe. The reveal at the end of the episode is 👌. 8/10

United: Pour one out for poor Talas. Tucker and Reed disable the drone, while Archer disables Shran. The reveal at the end of the episode tops the Romulan intrigue from “Babel One”. The Andorians get some great development here, and Jeffrey Combs is sublime per usual. 9/10

The Aenar: The Romulans’ plans are foiled by a rag-tag Vulcan-Human-Andorian-Tellarite alliance, and the ethereal Aenar add much depth to the story. Trip’s feelings for T’Pol lead to a shocking ready room scene. I love these little throughlines connecting distinct stories. 10/10

Affliction: We learn why the Klingons from TOS looked different compared to their later brethren. This was a completely unnecessary “reveal” that IMO has influenced some of the unfair criticism DSC and PIC has endured. But it’s still a mostly thrilling espionage thriller. 6/10

Divergence: The opening sequence is incredible, breathless; something Star Trek rarely indulged in. Phlox’s solution at the end is clever and in character. I’m giving this episode a high score just for that chill-inducing setpiece, but my criticism from “Affliction” stands. 8/10

Bound: I can kinda, sorta see what they were going for in giving the Orion “slave girls” agency…but the execution is still not great. We saw this story already with Duras in S2. 4/10

In a Mirror, Darkly: Star Trek’s first episode set entirely in the Mirror Universe is a doozy: clever reframing of First Contact, a new opening title sequence, and our “heroes” really digging into their Terran Empire selves. The ties to TOS “The Tholian Web” are ingenious. 9/10

In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II: Archer’s mental state unravels as he plots and schemes. But it’s Hoshi (Augustus Iaponius) who gets the last laugh. 9/10

Demons: Another all-too-prescient episode tackling racism through the sci-fi lens of xenophobia. Peter Weller is perfectly cast as the hateful Paxton. Nice to see Mayweather get something to do in this third-to-last episode of the series. 8/10

Terra Prime: ENT’s main story ends on the highest of high notes. It was a great choice to end the Terra Prime story in the third act and give Archer’s speech and Trip & T’Pol’s final scene room to breathe. 10/10

These Are the Voyages…: Didn't like this one 15 years ago, still don't like it today. An absolutely sad way for Star Trek to leave television after 18 consecutive years. This episode gets 1 point for the cameos in the final scene. 1/10

And with that, Season 4 of ENT, and the series itself, comes to an end in my Great Star Trek Rewatch. Final score: 7.86/10. Highest score(s): "Storm Front, Part II," "Home," "Kir'Shara," "The Aenar," "Terra Prime." . Lowest score(s): "These Are the Voyages…"

Excerpt from my War Heroes AU

(Mighty Med/ Lref au where Kaz, Skylar, and Oliver leave the force to fight the war on Caldera)

“I know Oliver had always liked me, but when did you start?” Skylar didn’t look at him as she spoke, but her hand was firmly in his. The encampment was quiet around them and Oliver was the only one asleep, curled into Skylar. She held him like he was the world, because he was.

Kaz didn’t like questions, they made his brain work to hard. He could recite comic books and movies but questions about yesterday stressed him out. However, he did know the answer to this one, for once.

“I never hated you Sky, I was just jealous. And then…you died.”

He would never forget that day, how he and Oliver had torn each other apart verbally and nearly destroyed their friendship because of jealousy. Of how Skylar, even at her most evil, could never truly hurt them. Of how Oliver defeated her, only to have the Annihilator deus ex machina and attack her.

Of how she died.

There had been a moment where it had truly dawned on him that she was dead, that his friend was dead and her last memories would be of him hating her. Sure, she had been saved, but that feeling still haunted him. She was so close. He had dealt with the threat of death every day in the hospital, but Skylar would be the first patient he’s lost. She wasn’t just a patient either! She was funny and awkward! She loved the colours orange and pink! She rolled in the sand at the beach because it felt like home and whined that boiling water was too cold. She was a dork and a total loser sometimes, and an absolute badass gymnast the next! She was a hero, even without her powers, and in a way it was their fault any of this had happened.

He hated Oliver choosing Skylar over him, but to be fair, he’d choose her over him too.

Kaz caused trouble, it was in his nature. Chaos Kaz, as his mother used to say. She would smile down at him, eyes creased and tired and so much dimmer than he remembered, ruffle his hair and tell him he was a little tornado. Kaz broke things, and it was his fault they broke too.

Skylar finally met his eyes in the low light of the tent, eyes filled with tears that threatened to spill down her cheeks. Her war paint was still on her face, making her even more beautiful somehow. She looked like she belonged on a comic book cover, emblazoned across with her spear and armour.

“Ya know, I had to listen to Ollie wax about you for years, I guess it made an impact.” He shrugged, as if it were that simple. In truth he had always known about Skylar Storm, but it was Sky who he fell for. Sky who ate her food like a ravenous beast. Sky who snorted when she laughed too hard. Sky who got the hiccups and cried because she thought she was dying. Sky who watched soap operas and sitcoms and threw popcorn at the tv. He just had a thing about falling for his best friends.

They both looked down at Oliver, their Ollie. The war had put even more muscle on his slim frame from helping haul weapons and shipments. He had really stepped up with the expectations out on them. Where Kaz got homesick and struggled to be a good soldier, Olli fought like a veteran. They worried about him, about who he would be when this war ended.

“Thank you. I know I’ve said it, but Kaz, thank you. Without you…” She wiped at her cheeks, smearing some of her paint.

Without Kaz, there would be no Oliver. Without them, she would have never been able to be the warrior she needed to be for her home. Calderans had become soft in the peace they had been blessed with, they weren’t prepared for this war.

“We’ll always have your back Sky.”

She let go of his hand to throw an arm around his shoulders and pull him close and lay her head on his shoulder. His warmth felt like home even now, even on Caldera, and maybe it wasn’t just the heat anymore.

Oliver shifted, the steam he had been emitting solidifying into condensation on his skin as he stretched and yawned. He was still healing from a small injury and winced as it pulled before shuffling over to lay across both of their laps.

“You guys should sleep. We have a raid tomorrow.” He said softly, as if you not break the moment any more. He reached up to cup Kaz’s face, fingers tracing the scar along his neck and making him shiver. Skylar smiled at them, shaking her head. Those boys of hers.

“Yeah, okay, we should all get some rest.”

Notes: Gotta wash my hands from angst a bit.

Summary: Cold mornings were tough on the big baby and what's a good way to remedy this than to be in his loving spouse arms.

Chilly air kissed him awake, an indication of the cold season peaking at the corner. With groggy hands, Satoru reached the other side of the bed. Wanting to fight this sweater weather in the loving embrace of his wife but instead what greeted him was emptiness. That was strange, where could she go? Today was Sunday. Both of them could sleep in as much as they wanted, so where was she?

Scrunched face, he sat up trying to look for his other half. To no avail, there was only nothing. Groaning on his hand, not wanting to fight Jack Frost's breath alone, the white fluff decided to look for her.

The corridor of his home felt like a maze to his sleepy brain but lucky for him, he didn't have to search for too long. Too blessed by god himself, the click clacks of the mechanical keyboard can be heard from a distance. Giving Satoru divine intervention where his wifey could be.

Opening the door of their shared office, there she sat in front of her computer. Headphones on and back facing him, a wild grin crept on his face. Gotcha!

Pulling her chair, the bean pole climbed on top of her lap, burying himself on the crevice of her neck. Inhaling her familiar scent and suffocating from the feeling of her. Peppered soft kisses trailed over her remaining exposed skin. “Why did you leave?” Voice riddled in deep whisky serenade, she oh so loved. “ I miss you, come back to bed.”

“Can’t. I have to work, Satoru.” she whispered with red fever. Calmly prying her husband’s towering form off, she pleaded to him. “Go back to bed, please ‘toru.” As much as she wanted to scold this big baby, making a scene would be too much for her. Living with this man for years had taught the lovely lady that once he gets in a clingy mood it's going to be difficult to reason out with him. Like a giant koala with a cat brain. Go figure.

Sea of persuasion and compromise poured towards the man child yet none were able to drown him. It was time for plan b, she thought. Small hands reached towards her computer desperate to turn it off but sadly, vertically challenged as she was, not even her fingertips could tap one key. Satoru had pulled her chair a bit farther than it should. How about reaching with her foot? Yeah, no that’s not an option. It’s too embarrassing to put on that kind of show. Well, that was hardly a plan b.

The abundance of grace offered by God had let the door wide open. Their lovingly self made deus ex machina had stumbled upon the whole ordeal. Their child, their lovely little boy with painted features of the Scream, as young as he can be, maturity seemed to be a trait that he luckily got from his mother. Quickly understanding the situation and the trouble it's causing, with childish might he pulled daddy dearest shirt. “Dad! Let mommy go!”

Like her mother, he too was embarrassed by the abominable snowman incarnate. Already contemplating his pedigree. Questions along the lines of ‘Why did God give him a weirdo for a parent?’ to ‘Is it possible to file an official complaint to heaven?’

Satoru on the other hand, only whined as he continued his stupidity, diving deeper into his missus. Tightly holding on to her with dear life. “Don’t want to! Wanna be with wifey! IT'S MY TURN!”

All eyes on him as exaggerated gasp left the lips of his family. Such a strong declaration made the two conclude that whatever maturity he had on his bones had become non-existent. Well there were hardly any to begin with.

It dug to his darling's grave a few more inches than it should. She could feel her soul leave her body as her husband mimicked a siren’s warning and their child? Already revoking his father license, rescinded he was. Goodbye #1 dad mug it's uncle Nanamin’s now.

Desperate tug of war felt like an eternity as whispered begging and refusals bounce back and forth. Having enough of this circus the boy now red and blue shouted at the top of his lungs. Finally someone acknowledging the elephant in the room. “MOMMY IS IN A ZOOM MEETING!”

There it is. Hook, line and sinker. Everything fell silent.

Baffled, his pretty mouth hanging open, Satoru looked at the webcam. It had confirmed the alien behavior of his two favorite people. Now he too felt like a cow hovering towards the mothership. Everyone saw everything. Everything.

Gears turned in his lovely little head, there the newly received information simmered in the pan of his brain waiting for the planets to align perfectly, till it was ready to be served. Ding! ding! ding!. There it is ready to finally be given to tye customer.

Bon Appetit.

Feigning a world ending shriek, large hands covered his body and the other to his mini me. “Honey, I didn’t know you were such an exhibitionist!”

If God had given too much blessing, hell would give back too. It's only natural after all. Satoru may be perfect but oh dear, the rest? Insufferable.

As if to make it worse to the Gojo family, the meeting was uploaded on the internet. It went viral. The culprit? None other than the devil’s advocate, Mr. Getou Suguru.

Last night I had a dream that I demanded somebody write me a fic where right after the final battle Zuko and Katara are yeeted through time back to season 1 (but like as their whole season 3 selves and season 1 Zuko and Katara are still very much there) and they have no choice but to help team avatar without giving away who they are and you know what? Go off dream me because that sounds lit af and I don’t want to write it but I would sure as hell read it

Just think of:

- The utter bafflement of Zuko and Katara as they try to figure out what happened to them and where they are and then the HORROR when they see THEMSELVES—angry S1 Zuko on his ship and S1 Katara who can barely waterbend. They look at each other and there’s just this LOOK that they share of grim realization at what’s happened to them

- They don’t know if Aang was able to defeat Ozai during the comet because they were sent back right after the Azula battle and surmise that Aang must have lost and they were sent back in time to better prepare him for the fight

- They know it would crush Aang’s morale to hear that he was going to lose, so they decide not to reveal who they are. Katara paints her face (painted lady/kyoshi warrior-esque) and Zuko wears a mask (we’ve basically got some painted-blue action going here) so that they can assist the team without being recognized

- Katara helps teach her past self waterbending so that she can master it faster

- Zuko poses as a non-bender but is able to give Aang pointers because he was “raised in a firebending family”. He’s also able to give Sokka sword lessons

- Zuko slips bitlets of wisdom to his S1 self when they encounter each other Uncle Iroh-style which pisses S1 Zuko off but gets him thinking

- HEIGHTENED FORTUNE TELLER EPISODE SHENANIGANS

- When they meet Toph they have to be EXTRA on their toes all the time in order to not give away the game. Toph thinks the two of them are shady as hell and picks up on things about them that the others don’t—like how the mysterious painted waterbender sounds almost identical to Katara (even though she’s trying to disguise her voice) and how they move EXACTLY THE SAME. It’s really hard for S3 Katara and Zuko to keep up their charade with a human lie detector in the group

- Past!Katara noticed that there seems to be a “thing” between the painted waterbender and the masked swordsman because they’re so close and she and S3 Katara have an awkward but very cute conversation about feelings and romance and finding “the one”.

- I don’t know if the Crossroad of Destiny will play out the same or not but THINK OF THE POTENTIAL

- SO MANY S3 shenanigans

- The gig is finally up when Zuko joins them and they just can’t fool Toph anymore. There’s a big reveal full of drama and betrayal and tears but finally acceptance

- Aang realizes that Katara and Zuko share a very special bond and that helps him find peace with letting her go and unlocking his seventh chakra. Now super prepared with all the elements mastered and access to the Avatar state, he’s able to defeat Ozai non-stupidly without the help of deus-ex-lionturtle or that gotdamned sunuvabitch rock

- Does Ozai live? Probably. Zuko will take care of it.

- Not sure if Zuko and Katara are able to get back to their own time or not but they make peace with whatever happens and promise to stay together. Maybe they go on to be vigilantes putting down post-war resistances or maybe they open a shop in Ba Sing Se next to Iroh’s (while still getting up to the occasional mischief). Maybe they sub in for their other selves from time to time so they can go on much needed vacations or bust some crooks or whatever. Regardless of what happens, it’s a good ending full of happiness for everyone

There’s so much I’m leaving out, but that’s what I was able to plot off the top of my head. I want this so terribly now 💔

The ableism in the Acotar series

I was thinking about all the problematic aspects of the Acotar books, and I realized that they are pretty ableist. I don’t know if someone have already talked about it, but just in case I’ll do it. But before I start, I need to say some things:

1. I haven’t read the series for a while, and I don’t remember some stuff. So, I might write something that is wrong.

2. I’m not disabled myself. This post is based on my research about disabilities and how disabled people are represented in the media. I have a lot of interest in the subject, and I also researched about it because I’m writing a story with several disabled characters. I also did a school project about assistive technologies.

3. English is not my mother language and I’m still learning it. There are gonna be spelling and grammar mistakes. I’m sorry about it, but it is life.

4. I haven’t read the acosf book, so maybe SJM changed the story or some character in this book and therefore my post will be incorrect.

5. Besides the fact that I consider Emerie to be disabled, I won’t talk about her in the post. Because as I said I didn’t read acosf and I think that her appearance in the acofas has the same purpose that the other female Illyrians (since Idk how to write Illyrians this will be write wrong in the entire post, I’m sorry).

6. I forget the name of some characters and I don’t want to search it, so I’ll just give them new names.

Now let’s begin.

I’ll analyze the following characters in this post: Papa Acheron, Lucien, Cassian and Ianthe, the woman from the library and the female Illyrians, the female creature from the forest, the Illyrian soldiers that came back from the war and the girl who couldn’t fly. I think I forgot someone, but patience. In the end of the post I’ll talk about disabilities, ableism and worldbuilding.

I also would like to say that almost all her characters got their disability as a punishment, and the problem with this is that it always links disability with something bad.

Papa Acheron:

As I said Papa Acheron got his disability as a punishment, since he didn’t pay his debts, some people went in this house and broke his leg. I might be wrong, but I think that it didn’t healed well and because of that he has chronic pain. So, to better analyze him I’ll compare him to two other characters with chronic pain, Kaz Brekker and Melissa, one of my main characters.

Papa Acheron became useless after he became disabled. He thought he was useless and by extension Feyre thought it too. I’m not saying that internalized ableism doesn’t exist, but the narrative never calls it out. Feyre accepts this excuse, it is kind of implied that if he weren’t disabled, he would be able to help his family and get money. Now let’s look to Kaz (I haven’t read the second book of the duology, please no spoilers). He accepts his disability, not only that but he uses his cane as one of his symbols. He goes against the idea that a disabled person is stuck with a cane or a wheelchair or whatever. He feels free with his cane. Now, this doesn’t mean that every disabled character needs to feel okay with his disability. My character, Melissa, feels a lot of anger because of her chronic pain. It hurts her, it disrupts her plans, it makes her suffer. However, it didn’t stop her to live her life and she also is not seeking anyone’s pity, which is very different from the Papa Acheron situation. Mel has friends, a social life, she studies, she will have a job, she will date, get married and have children. She doesn’t feel mad because she is disabled, she is also autistic, and she loves that part of herself. What bothers her is that her disability makes her feels a lot of pain. Papa Acheron is just someone to you feel bad and angry about. He doesn’t do anything because he is disabled and believes that this makes his useless and the narrative kind of agrees with him.

Lucien:

Lucien doesn’t have one eye, and that’s what makes him disabled. He became disabled as a punishment for falling in love with a lesser fae and not only that, but he is only without his mechanic/magic eye when he is on his worse. He was without his eye when his family was torturing and banishing him. And then when he was UTM. Again, disability being connected with bad things. Now about his mechanic eye. The first time that Feyre describes his eye she says it is creepy. Which is bad. But also, why it had to be magic and give him the ability to see spells or something like that (this was never brought back btw)? Why can’t he have a normal mechanical eye? Why he needs a mechanical eye? Why does his mechanical eye need to compensate the fact he is disabled? He is as much complete with and without his eye.

Cassin and Ianthe:

I put this two together for one reason, their disabilities were cured. I’ll talk about Cassian first. When they invaded Hybrein (I also don’t know how to write the name of the country) they hurt his wings badly. And considering that to Illyrians the wings are as much a limb as an arm or a leg, he was disabled for a while. (I’m aware that to something be considered a disability it needs to be long lasting. But I think that the fact that it was cured is ableist, if I’m not wrong the text said it was a miracle he was healed.)Then we had Cassian in the floor with his wings all damaged, suffering a lot, what a horrible scene. But don’t worry! The next time he’ll appear completely cured, because being disabled is such a horrible thing and SJM never used deus ex machina to save her characters. So, this injured made him disabled for a while, and it could be interesting. The wings are the Illyrian symbol, the symbol of their toxic masculinity and their sexism. Cassian being disabled because of his wings would make him revalue his culture and his own idea of masculinity and it would be so amazing. But he was cured. I think that this makes Cassian falls in the disabled for one day trope. Just like Ianthe. First the way she became disabled was disgusting. Feyre invading her mind was such a horrible thing to do. I’m not denying that Ianthe is a terrible person/fae but that doesn’t change the fact that it was a horrible scene. I really dislike characters with telepathic powers, because for me their powers are crossing a line. They invade and control someone’s mind. They take off the person free will. They basically turn the person in a robot. If I remember correctly when Feyre made Ianthe broke her hand it was with the purpose to make it useless. And when she appeared again in all her glory she was, surprise, surprise, cured.

The woman from the library and the female Illyrians:

I put they together because their disabilities are used for the same two purposes. The first is that they became disabled as a punishment for being female, and the second it to show how FEMINIST Rhysand is. He isn’t feminist, so all these women suffered for nothing. Again, disability being linked with bad things. The symbol of the female Illyrians suffering is they becoming disabled. NOT GOOD AT ALL. About the woman from the library, she was there to also show how good Feyre is. She is there so we can feel pity of her. She didn’t deserve it.

The female creature who couldn’t see:

My problem with her is that it is implied/said that she has better senses because she is blind. And that’s not how it works?? People just pay more attention in what they hear, touch or smell when they are blind/visually impaired.

The girl who couldn’t fly:

I'm gonna call her Anna. First Anna is like the only character who just have a disability. No trauma, no war, no punishment. She just has. Then she is a great disabled character, right? Wrong. She has inspirational porn written all over her story. She is there to make Feyre feel better about herself and make other abled people/fae feel inspired. She is there so we can say: ohhh poor thing, but at least she overcame her disability and now can fly. So ableist. Anna is also only valued after proving herself useful. That is wrong. Disabled people should be valued because they are people. They don’t need to be amazing in anything to be treated with respect.

The Illyrian soldiers:

My problem with them is how their disability is used to reinforce sexism and make Cassian and Rhysand feel bad. But what about the Illyrian soldiers? How are they feeling? It seems this is not important. They also bother me because of worldbuilding questions.

Disabilities, ableism and worldbuilding:

First, why humans and fae feel the same about disabled people? Feyre has the same opinion the IC have. And the humans and fae were separated for 500 years. This doesn’t make sense. Every court think the same thing about disabled fae? Does something change if the disabled fae is a lesser or a higher fae? It should make a difference. A real world example of how social class affects the way disabled people are treated: the first school for deaf people created only taught children of the nobles.

And why the way people look to disabled fae didn’t change after the war? What about the assistive technology? You know what, it is unrealistic the fact that we don’t have any assistive technology in this world. But this happen in the antient times, how could there be any assistive technology? First, assistive technology is everything that helps a disabled person, a cane, a screen reader, a scooter. Everything can be an assistive technology. Second, assistive technologies exist since the antiente times. One of the oldest prothesis were found in a mummy. There is a painting of Hephaestus using a wheelchair. And considering that this series happens in what was supposed to be the Middle ages, it was supposed to have assistive technologies. Wheelchairs during this time were heavy and the user couldn’t use it by himself, but they existed. There are records of a king using a wheelchair during the middle ages. And I mean with the war something was supposed to change. The first place to blind people in the France was created because 300 soldiers came back from the crusades without their eyes. It was in the century 20 that disabled people started to be more included in the society. And one of the reasons were the soldiers that came back from WW1 and WW2 disabled. Not only that but in war times the technology improves, so a lot of new assistive technologies and materials were created during this time. The first record of guide dogs comes from 1819 in school in Vienna, but it didn’t work. Only after WW1 that guide dogs appeared again. And you know with what purpose? Help veterans that were blind due to the war. Braille was a system used for the French army during battles. Louis Braille only made it simpler. The war should change something.

Why is the world ableist?  The excuse that this is an antient society doesn’t work my friend. The Egypt was a very including country. Blind people could be part of any social class. Dwarfs were part of the society since they had a dwarf god. In antient Japan blind people were expected to be independent. They could work with music, religion, telling stories etc. And the work of telling stories was very important since it made the Japanese tradition to continue. The excuse that this is an antient society is just this, an excuse. Now she could have used to say something. Leigh Bardugo used the ableism of her world to criticize the ableism of our world. I’m doing the same thing with my story. SJM made an ableist world just because.

That was my analysis. I’m sorry this was very long. I know this was a little confusing, but it was very difficult to put all the stuff that was in my mind in text. In my mind everythig made sense, but when I was writing it I realized I wasn’t following a logical argument. If that makes sense. Anyway, thank you for reading it.

The first thing I wrote in the song is the hook – take another bow as the spectacle is ending (etc). Even before the streamers acknowledged it, I have been thinking of Dream's character having a god complex. Since it's his server, I thought of him that way. I think Deus ex machina is the phrase, but when I think of a god, I think of it as "working even if you don't see it".

With that came the passage "The eyes of the Lord are everywhere" (Proverbs 15:3).

I was finding Gregorian chants that I could sample, but I don't think there's one with the passage I needed. So I decided to pull up the Latin Vulgate version!

"In omni loco, oculi Domini (contemplantur malos et bonos)"

For me, Scriptural references are the best way that could make me associate my songwriting to supernatural occurrences. This is what I also did with BadBoyHalo's theme; I referenced the Temptation of Jesus in the whispers – the devil bribing the main character with sweet words to corrupt the latter. I made this song like a TV show opening theme. When I wrote I own this world, you should come take a peek, I thought of Dream inviting Puffy and Connor immediately after the Pogtopia War. He was touring new people in his world without letting them know the doom they were preparing for.

What I enjoyed in making this song is the way I painted Dream as an ultimate puppetmaster, which happens to be a common thought among us fanartists. But what makes it different is me thinking about everything that happened in Dream's server – Dream's world, is his plan.
