Hi! First of all, your blog is absolutely wonderful! I wish there were a billion more like it for all pairings and fandoms lol. Do you know of any other good supernatural rec blogs?
As long as there were destiel fics, there were also dedicated fic reccers. Some stayed with fandom longer, some moved on faster, so, now we have a mix of active blogs and archived blogs. i've seen some people express concern that the spn/destiel fandom is dying out. i've had that feeling myself! but SO MANY cool projects have started (or continued), even two years after the finale, and i want to highlight some of them for you!
(sorry for so many links in replies. trying to make sure this post shows up in the tags. stay cool, tumblr.)
@amoreprofoundcon is a fanworks & creators-focused destiel convention (via zoom!) created by fans. the first con was back in march 2022, with a second scheduled for the destiel holiday weekend (nov 5-6)!!
@mixtapebookclub is a podcast focused on destiel fanfiction, featuring a different topic and author each episode!!
the destiel fan favs survey is still going strong (link to the ao3 collection in the replies) and you can find more info at @destielficarchive!! the ao3 collection currently includes 2782 works, submitted by fans over the five years the survey has run.
@destieltropecollection also does a yearly survey where writers can submit their own works that fit a list of various tropes. i love to see writers reccing their own stories!!!
the profound bond discord server (@profoundnet & link to discord in replies) has a gazillion members and is still hoppin'. the tumblr also reblogs members' stories, art, and other creations.
suptober is a fanworks celebration put together by @winchester-reload every october!! you can find this year's contributions in the #suptober22 tag. (suptober is not destiel-specific so you'll find a lot of other great spn art there too.)

I get why the "Sam knows" trope is popular in Destiel fanon, but can we all collectively agree that Sam doesn't know shit? Genuinely. The lights are on, but nobody's home. Every time Cas dies, Sam seems so confused about Dean's reaction to it, or reckons he's upset about something else. Mary's gone and Cas is dead? Well, Sam's upset Mary's gone, so Dean must be upset Mary's gone. It's purely logical. Dean literally has to scream in Sam's face that it's not about anything else other than Cas's death for Sam to actually get it.

1. How many works do you have on ao3?
32, unless you count the book covers. I've got 106 book covers
2. What’s your total ao3 word count?
487,170
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Whatever I get stuck on at any given moment. My most recent ones are 9-1-1, Inception, ATS and Hawkeye, but my repeat fandoms are Spn, X-Men, The Old Guard and Black Sails.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
I'm copying chubs and doing my personal favorites, because my top four kudos'd fic are all for the same fandom (The Old Guard) and written within like three weeks of each other.
The Scroll of Saint Barnabas (9-1-1, Buddie, 15k): recency bias, but I had a lot of fun with this one. I also probably drove my girlfriend*and cousin insane during the writing process. Sorry about that. The basic premise is: we all know how time loop fics go, but what if after the loop is broken the character has PTSD from all the things that nobody else remembers? And also what if you get a knotted dildo hooked onto your permanent retainer?
*though we've now established consent and parameters for whether we can have sex if one of us is stuck in a time loop. It's always important to have these conversations in advance!!!
What The Moon Was Saying (Spn, destiel, 16k.) It's about Dean rescuing Cas from the Empty, technically, but it's also about Dean working through things he refuses to think about directly, and it's also about the perspective of dead characters who aren't all-knowing and have no clue what happened after they died, and it's also about Inanna's Descent into the Underworld and how many jokes about Sumerian mythology I could fit in there that probably nobody else is going to think are funny but I think are funny, and it's also about what issues Orpheus would have had if he'd succeeded. The central thesis statement is that Margaritaville is thee Dean Winchester Mental State song.
The Mixtape, Or: Six Things You Learn in Thursday School (Spn, destiel, 6k.) I always had this idea that I was going to write a fantasy book of some kind, where the first part would be about the founding of a religion and then the following parts would jump ahead a few hundred years and see how that religion and that original story change in the telling. Instead of writing that book I wrote 6,000 words about a post-apocalyptic religion whose foundational text was the Winchester Gospels, except they don't actually have the Winchester Gospels, so they're relying on collected ephemera and thirdhand accounts. It is also about both academic and online discourse.
The House on Graymalkin Lane (X-Men, background cherik, 92k.) My nice little outsider-POV x-men haunted house fic. It started out as "the x-mansion would be a bonkers haunted house" and then it turned into a love letter to the original timeline (we barely knew ye). It's about the mortifying ordeal of being in high school and also about how all my grandparents died at once and I had a lot of complicated feelings about that.
The Ill-Made Knight (X-Men, cherik, 1.5k) OK so you know that trope that's like "if anyone is going to kill me I want it to be you"?? it's that, but instead of being used as a statement of everlasting love and devotion, it's being used as psychological warfare. And also kind of a statement of everlasting love. But in a fucked up sort of way. Because Cherik.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes! I didn't used to but I do now because I always like it when people reply to mine. Sometimes I miss them and respond years later but like... I got there eventually?
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
the whole estate of mortal man. (Black Sails, silverflint, 40k.) Silver is immortal but has a very impermanent self. Flint is mortal and has a very permanent self. There was only one way that was ever going to end and I stand by it.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Of recent ones, I guess The Most Fun A Girl Can Have? (Kate/Yelena, 8k.) They're having a pretty good time for most of it.
8. Do you get hate on fic?
Not since like, high school.
9. Do you write smut?
Nope. Hats off to smut writers, you're doing God's work. It's very difficult.
10. Do you write crossovers?
I haven't, unless you count every Marvel fic being a crossover. And Good Omens show/book. But that seems like a cop-out.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not as far as I know.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! Some very kind people translated The Punishment of Sisyphus (Black Sails crackfic) and Antebellum (Black Sails, Anne & Eleanor fic) into Russian, Stalefish (Old Guard, Nile-centric) into Polish, and Kidnapping for Dummies (Old Guard, Joe shenanigans) into Spanish. I can only read the Spanish one.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yessss. The #ImmortalHusbands Conspiracy (The Old Guard social media fic) with @phoenix-acid. That was very fun.
14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?
Why would you ask me this. This is cruel. I can barely pick a top 5.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but probably won’t?
The Marvel pirate AU, probably. It's almost a complete story on its own as it stands. There's about half a next chapter written and I could probably us that to tie things up, if I cut out a bunch of things, but I'd have to reread all my research. I did way too much research for that.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Character voices? I hope it's character voices. I watch a lot of youtube compilations before writing anyone to try and get a handle on how they talk.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
The actual romance part of a romance. What do you mean they have to get together after I've set everything up so that they get together? Ridiculous.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I've never done it before, but I respect people who can pull it off. I do really hate that trope though where a multilingual character calls their love interest pet names in their mother-tongue, when they are never shown using it that way (or mixing that language and English in a conversation) in canon.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
....percy jackson and the olympians.
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
Since I listed five favorites up there I'm switching this with the kudos question. Fic with the most kudos is Kidnapping for Dummies (The Old Guard, 3.5k)

Wow, thanks so much for your interest in my poetry! That one of them got stuck in your head is a great compliment indeed ^_^ Sadly I do not have poetry published. Maybe someday I’ll get my ducks in a row and start trying again.
As for fic recs....yes? The problem is there are too many! I’ve been in this fandom...well, this summer it will have been ten years. That is a lot of time to read fic. Especially since I don’t know your tastes, I will direct you to two amazing resources--two of many, truth be told, but these are first to come to mind. Truly, we have the most wonderful fandom full of incredibly generous fans who do spectacular things.
One of them is the Destiel Fan Survey. It sadly has stopped (it was a tremendous amount of work, I gather), but for a few years, it was an annual survey run by @unforth soliciting your fav destiel fics you read that year. The AO3 collection has almost 2800 fics in it plus 600 more bookmarked. The beauty of this collection/survey is that each one is the very favorite of someone in the fandom, so no matter your taste you’re going to find something incredible. I know it may seem like a lot, but given that the ship has over 100,000 fics on AO3 alone, this should be a less daunting pool to dive into.
For a more directed route, try The Mixtape Book Club. It’s a podcast run by @malmuses and @ellen-of-oz in which each episode discusses a trope and several awesome fics that use it. They also have an AO3 collection for ease of searching. Peruse their back catalog and pick whichever episode catches your eye! I believe most of them also have transcripts if listening to podcasts is not your thing.
It’d be remiss of me not to mention that all three of the people I called out here are amazing writers in their own right, so don’t forget to look at what they have to offer, too!

@impostoradult answered to my previous comments here. This is a huge discussion and fandom is barely starting it. Emotions run high because there’s sense of dread and helplessness, so, no, not all arguments are very rational but the thing is. The thing is we are talking about fandom space. Hobby space. Place where we are supposed to create and relax, and interact with other fans. Connections are supposed to be between humans. I want to know which blorbo lives rent free in my mutual’s head because I care about my mutual, not which blorbo is being squeezed through AI algorithm.
Fandom is barely coming out of creators/consumers debate debacle. I’d say that lots of fans are still struggling with the idea that monetizing your hobby is bad for you and the hobby (and posting money links on AO3 is against their ToS). And now we are facing possibility where one person’s hobby will have to compete with AI product based on all fanworks combined.
Here’s some points from @impostoradult’s comment I wanted to answer directly.
And so, to address some of your other points in more depth - if someone writing fic doesn't have an original take (and isn't even necessarily trying to have an original take) we still don't consider that a problem in fandom.
The reason why fans have no problem with repetitive fics in fandom is because we value people behind those fics, and because we consider those people integral to our fandom experience. Yes, their fic may be repetitive, amateurish and full of cliches but that is not their only contribution to fandom. A lot of fic writers run excellent fandom blogs, reblog posts and support of other creators, make gifs, mod challenges and discords. Even if they’re just lurkers, they contribute to fandom in many small ways. No AI is gonna do that for us. And it is accepted that every writer has to start somewhere, their first fics may not be the best, but they still will reflect on fandom trends. If we want to read amazing fics some day, we must support beginner writers now. When I see a bunch of similar tropey fics in my fandom, I know that my fandom is thriving. There’s a person behind each fic, there’s dialogue, there’s collective creative ping pong, there’s belonging to a group. (and then there’s Goncharov)
In fact, often times we value stories BECAUSE they so closely imitate things we've consumed before. We JOKE in fandom about the fact that we'll read 500 stories with the exact same premise that all end up the exact same way. We often overtly VALUE the highly imitative nature of storytelling (both in fandom and in wider world).
Yes, we JOKE on tumblr that if there are 500 fake dating fics, we will read them all and ask for more. But we NEVER read them all when we go to AO3. Sure, a popular trope will get an eyeballs on the fic and give it some hits, but it does not guarantee that people will kudos, comment and keep reccing the fic only because it has that popular trope. I speak from my experience as a destiel fic reccer. There’s time when fake dating was very popular and lots of authors wrote fics with this trope for dcbb. Well, not all fics got the same attention and feedback. Sometimes even, fics with great tumblr promo posts and thousands of tumblr notes had very modest stats on AO3. Because at the end of the day, supporting idea on tumblr is easy. Reading the fic, and then engaging with the author, takes effort. And most people spare that effort to fics they really liked. This is fandom dichotomy between “I want to support all my friends” and “I want to read only good fics in the limited time that I have”.
Fic authors are very aware of this unbalanced feedback loop. It will get only harder if AI fics will flood the tags and take away some eyeballs. I think this is the main reason why so many fic writers and readers balk at the idea of untagged artificially produced fic. Such creation goes against the very nature of fandom. Commenting on a fic can lead to fandom friendships or just a positivity boost of “Hell, yea! I made another human happy with my comment!”. I’ve no idea how should I react to a fic that is a product of data filtering and squeezing even if I could admit that the end result is actually decent. Commenting on an AI fic is a dead end, ChatGPT will not write me another fic or discuss my blorbo with me.
A month or two ago, a troll or a spam bot was leaving comments on AO3 fics saying something like “ Work scanned, AI use detected “ which stressed out a lot of folks who didn’t know how to prove that they wrote the fic themselves. AI generated content is already being disruptive and it will impact and change fandom. The thing I’m trying to say here is that, AI fic is not bad because it’d be low quality or “without a soul”. It is bad news because it is disruptive to fandom as we know it in ways we can’t really predict yet. And that is scary.

Thinking about making a Destiel fic recs post or just link to my fanfic collection because I have a detailed collection with every longer fic that I have read including a very detailed tagging system (word count, author, setting, tropes, trigger warnings, tags about Dean and Cas, etc...) and direct links to the collection tags in the collection description and I have read quite some fics at this point but I have no clue if anyone would be ever interested in a link to the collection or a rec list and also I don't want people to be judgemental on me because I also read dark fic and sometimes also Dead Doves (I just read everything basically as long as it has at least 20k words, and the longer, the better)
Hey! First of all i think the world does need more people who make rec lists ESPECIALLY in destiel fandom because it’s so hard to sort through 100k+ fanfics (only counting ao3 even). So thank you for considering that!
As for how you go about it… i haven’t seen anyone really direct people to their bookmark collections on ao3 — though i don’t see a reason why not! You sound very organised.
The way i personally do rec lists is i make a post which contains titles, ratings, word counts, links and short descriptions (own opinion) with maybe 10ish fics to keep it manageable. Often within a certain theme (faves, a certain trope, funny fics, …). That’s also a way you could go about it.
As for reading dark fics i truly cannot say how people would judge that. I’m of the ‘you do you’ variety of fan as long as it’s tagged properly. However i don’t know if there’d be criticism for you? I think — and hope — not. I feel like as a fandom we’ve matured enough.

EEEEK Destiel Trope Collection
So since drawing just isn’t working tonight..... I just submitted 4 of my ramblings to @destieltropecollection
This is big thing for me considering I don’t consider myself a writer, occasionally I write for fun and just to get ideas out of my head.
So I’m throwing those fics that have sat in my AO3, not being noticed, out into the trope world and see what happens.

what are your favorite deancas parallels ?
Ha, well that’s a long list nonny! :P
It also depends on whether you mean in show or in other media? Because whilst there are plenty in show, in other media we see the same romantic tropes time and time again meaning any couple in any film or TV show can be a narrative mirror for Destiel at this point.
One of my all time faves is Aragorn and Arwen:

But if we are talking in show, my favourite Destiel parallel to this day is still the absolute ridiculousness that is David and Violet from Bloodlines, written by Andrew Dabb himself. Link to gifset comparisons to blow your mind.
Here’s another classic meta post to make you want to bang your head against the wall at how on the nose David and Violet are to Dean and Cas. Dabb was NOT subtle with this.
Then of course there was the parallel that had us all screaming into our Cas plushies for months: Cain and Colette. This post is a good summary. I think it was actually confirmed somewhere that Colette was indeed supposed to be a Cas mirror but please don’t ask me to go digging for that source because I will literally drive myself mad looking for it (based on far too much experience of that)
The other favourite parallel of DeanCas that again, I will never quite get over, is DreamHunter. The pairing of Claire and Kaia was purposefully set up in Wayward Sisters using predominantly tropes out of the DeanCas trope book. Literally. The fact that the show later confirmed that DreamHunter was indeed romantic (and Bobo confirmed it too) only further proves that the source of inspiration is most likely also intentionally romantic. Boom.

I hope everyone can fall down the rabbit hole of mirrors and narrative parallels to Dean and Cas with me. It’s been driving me crazy for years. Can’t believe these fuckers still aren’t “canon” yet. Urgh.
