Being born and brought up in South Africa by Indian immigrant parents trying to "keep the culture" certainly has its unique ups and downs. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they taught me as much as they could about my heritage; but being exposed to everything SA has to offer, it's hard not to question their beliefs and to stick to traditions that don't make sense. What's even more baffling is how they haven't changed...

Anyhow, as a young woman at age 22 and about to graduate, the conversations with my folks are becoming more and more interesting. I am apparently getting married in about two years' time (because after 25 no one wants to marry you🤷) - don't worry, it hasn't been arranged yet😂 Noo, my parents are more modern, and so they'll start looking around and present options to me, and the decision on which man to buy is totally mine (they'll do the buying, of course). My dad even went the extra mile to say that I can find him on my own, but of course, on the condition that he's Indian, Malayalee, and a Roman Catholic Christian from a good family (🌚). He also actually made me type these specs out on a piece of paper and sign it two years ago, no lie😂😭

Also, being a student of Commerce, apparently if I want to marry a Doctor, I can only do so if they (his family) come to us, rather than us approaching them😂😂😂

And that's one of the major topics of the conversation I have every evening with my parents, now that I'm at home for the holiday. I have a brother who is about to go to university so the other topics include why Medicine would be a great degree🌚😂
