I always get the urge to read Agatha Christie at this time of year but I normally end up struggling to get motivated in October. Hopefully that’ll be different this year. At the very least, I’ve got one Christie finished.

This isn’t in my Christie top 10 but I do enjoy this story. I think it’s a little too clever for it’s own good but Poirot’s reasoning is on point, as usual. The plot is slick but it does require a certain suspension of disbelief. The murder plot relies too much on conveniences and wouldn’t be quite so easy to pull off. It’s fun though. Plenty of red herrings.

What fascinates me most about this is the references to adultery. Clearly, there were plenty of fresh wounds from her first marriage. The way she dissects the desire to cheat on their spouse is fascinating as is her ultimate assessment of the femme fatale. I think it also goes someway to explain the soppy romantic ending. Allowing the cuckolded Captain Marshall to find a “sensible” spouse is allow him to move on in the way she was able to.
