Reading the Hannibal Lecter Series

If you have stumbled across this with genuine interest, then may God bless your poor misguided soul. However that is only if you believe in God, unlike a certain someone...

After reading the four books comprising Thomas Harris’ series, and watching the NBC TV Show Hannibal, I believe I posses the necessary qualifications to give some relevant advice on how to approach the vast amount of content on Lecter:

1. Read the books and then watch the TV show/movies. The reason is that the books give significantly more context and insight into, specifically, Lecter’s character and allow for a more nuanced and exquisite understanding of the cinematographic works.

2. Read the books in order of publication: Red Dragon (1981), Silence Of The Lambs (1988), Hannibal (1991), and Hannibal Rising (2006). The reason is that this order gives progressive insight into Lecter’s character, and allows the reader to unveil his mystery himself, rather than being handed the entire backstory first (Hannibal Rising). Plus, Red Dragon serves as a fantastic hook into the series, and gives you freedom to decide whether you want to delve deeper, as the ending is relatively complete, and if you decide to drop it, there will be less guilt.

3. Do not read Hannibal, at least not past the end of “II Florence”. If you don’t want to feel disappointed, in relation to character development, and have trouble putting down books, stop at Silence Of The Lambs. If you want maximum personality development, pertaining to Lecter, stop at the end of the second part of Hannibal, “Florence”. Finally, if you want to decide for yourself, whether to be disappointed or not, feel free to read the entire book, but be warned (from my subjective point of view, of course).

I personally found that it is best to follow this pattern, however do not be strayed from your path by my opinion. Do what you feel is necessary, and most importantly, enjoy.

Coming from the author of ‘The Silence of the Lambs’, he has a lot of pull to deliver a gruesome conclusion. The thrill of it is, wondering whether Black Sunday will play as planned, rain or shine. Special Agent Kabakov is in charge of averting disaster, and he has brutal means of doing so… after all, you would beat a terrorist by stooping down to his level. This means drugging the perps, having them secured in maximum security hospital beds, euthanasia.. but Lander and Dahlia are the smiths, Bonnie and Clyde, &tc. If the blimp implodes without a hitch, what is their aim? Maybe they’ll kill the president. The maximum number of casualties possible is the best bet. They just need to get the balloon from South Libya, and they need to retain the plastic as Kabakov sniffs it out. I swear I didn’t mean to do all of these posts today but I needed to keep my mind busy. Valentines Day isn’t the real celebration today, it’s actually the 30th anniversary of The Silence of the Lambs movie being released. Has there ever been a more appropriate Valentines movie? I really feel that SoL captures the essence of the book and especially of Clarice. Kick ass female characters are my thing and Clarice is definitely in my top five. 
Several people have asked me if I’m going to be watching the tv show Clarice when it airs in the U.K. and no I will not be watching for several reasons. As many of you know the show Hannibal is extremely important to me and will forever have a special place in my heart. I was very excited when I heard that there would be a Clarice tv show and had planned to watch right up until I saw an interview where the show runner was very insulting about Hannibal. I then read the reviews and talked with some friends who did watch it and that confirmed my decision. Clarice Starling is one of my favourite characters and i will not be watching a show that disempowers her and is so disrespectful to the source material. Instead I will be watching Silence of the Lambs tonight and reading the book for the millionth time. This will also be my pick for Maryland in the challenge #50states50horrorbooks

It’s time for another round of our NaPoWriMo Spring POEMING challenge! While our October events are structured around the entire catalog of a single author in and around the horror and mystery genres, in the spring we ask our participants to all work with one iconic spooky book. This April we are looking for participants to write and post 30 poems in 30 days using the horror classic THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS by Thomas Harris!  So how is this going to work? Participants will need a copy of the aforementioned novel (you should be able to get a new copy for under $10, and there is an ebook edition in print if you have accessibility needs) and a willingness to sign a blood oath. What we need from you is one poem for each day of the month of April, which you will post on your own tumblr blog to share with our Facebook group. (We know, we are VERY high tech.) You will be expected to write and post 30 poems during the month of April Your poems must be written using found poetry techniques, and the only source text you can use is your copy of THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. Participants need not be experts in found poetry, or even poetry. We love newbies.
